Monday scent of the day 9/17

Posted by Robin on 17 September 2018 263 Comments

It's Monday, and it's the first day of Constitution Week. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm running late, in Cartier Baiser Volé Essence de Parfum.

Reminder: 9/21 is the International Day of Peace *and* World Gratitude Day. Wear a fragrance that fits.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from Cartier's Precious Garage, an installation designed by artist Desi Santiago.

Gonna be hot today (such a weird summer we’ve been having) but this morning is relatively cool so I feel at home in Molinard Habanita: it’s the most recent iteration but it still feels old-fashioned in the best way, almost vintage — complicated and deep, nothing boring or done-to-death about it. And it reads as a unisex, borderline-masculine floral oriental. It’s so great.

You smell great. Same here, have never tried the vintage but the modern one is so good, I don’t feel the need to. It’s quite powdery on me.

You smell great! I’m envious: I can’t wear this one to the office. It was one of a few perfumes about which my sensitive co-worker had complaints – and by agreement I avoid wearing those that, as he thinks, aggravate his headache (most likely, I just happen to wear those when he already had that headache, and I’m not sure he would even recognize those several that he “banned” but I don’t want to experiment with that :) ).

gosh, I love this stuff. It perks me right up. Will likely add something else later today. Possibly Jardins de Bagatelle as I crave white flowers lately.

Took the day off to attend to some personal business.Gaultier Le Male…ah yessssss,my old friend. After all these years,it just still smells so.damn.good.It my first fragrance purchase with “my” money(first paycheque back in 1997),and I thought it smelled like nothing else out there.Being in the outback of perfumeland(South Africa, lol),nobody else was wearing it at the time, and everyone said it smelled beautiful. After looting my Mom’s Madame Rochas and Anais Anais, and a bottle of Calvin Klein Escape for Men,this was my signature fragrance for about ten years or so.It is still love.
    Happy Monday All!!

I was going to say exactly this (also new or used, boxed or unboxed bottles.) Fragrancenet has it as well; I was just there looking for a different VCA. The Extraordinaires tend to be very affordable despite their high price tags when they launch (and the steep price of decants.)

I am testing out the sample pack of Essential Parfum I got off of lucky scent.
I am testing two one is The Musc and the other is Nice Bergamote

Musc notes are Ginger, beeswax, lavender, sandalwood, musks
Nice Bergamote are bergamot, Jasmine Grandiflora extract, natural cedarwood extract, ylang ylang, tonka bean

Bergamote is very “sunny” perfume and I don’t get a lot of cedar which is great because cedar equals hamster cage on me. This one would smell refreshing on a man and I would want to come a little closer for a nice inhale..IMHO
The Musc is very faint and close to the skin and doesn’t have as much projection at the Bergamote.

Tomorrow I will test another two.

Hello everyone! Hope you had restful weekends.

Yesterday I went to one of my local antique malls and found a bottle of Tendre Poison, only mostly used. Then in the very next booth I found a full bottle of Byzance EdT at a great price, which I just discovered a few weeks ago. I already know what Byzance smells like so I picked the Poison today. I don’t have any definite opinions yet, other than in is BIG.

I’ve never smelled Tendre Poison. I thought it was one that was ubiquitous at my high school until I finally looked it up and realized it was released long after my graduation date. I have spent some time looking for bottles, though, and it’s crazy $$$.

      Enjoy and congrats!

I’ve always been curious about Tendre Poison. I never saw it in the malls as I was growing up, nor is it mentioned often. I’m glad to finally smell it! I can make a sample for you if you’re in the US. It’ll just be a little vial but I’m happy to let you try it if you’re curious! My email is out of grasp at live dot com.

I’m giving my sample of Putain des Palaces another go, hoping it doesn’t veer too much towards my childhood daycare (or, if it does, that the daycare stage doesn’t last long). I’ve been resistant to so many of EldO’s fragrances, but I bought them just as I was getting into niche – I feel like I owe them all another chance.

Lol. I know! It’s so wrong, but the powderiness of it skews very baby wipe on my skin. I think we have gotten past that stage, though, thankfully.

My favorites right now? Ooh, I am all over the place. I have been loving Mitsouko, Tobacco Vanille, Gallivant’s London, and Bat. I am honestly just loving being able to explore after a few decades of not being able to – I had terrible allergies that are just now under control thanks to shots.

Am also thinking that it could be worse than one’s childhood daycare smelling of baby wipes. Then again, if that’s not an association you want, there are a lot of perfumes that’ll get crossed off the list.

I’m still up in Michigan where the weather has been glorious but quite warm; already 80 and forecast to get to 86 later! (=30C). But at least it’s low humidity and it cools off at night, unlike back home in Houston. I’m wearing Azemour les Orangers. I’ve enjoyed watching the hummingbirds come to the feeder in my brother’s back yard, but I want to tell them, “This warm weather won’t last much longer–you’d better start to fly south soon!”

I’m in Cleveland where the weather has been just beautiful for the last couple of weeks (save a few days of cool rain.) I saw a monarch butterfly (I think? Or a butterfly with similar coloring) and thought it must be awfully far away from its winter home!

I just learned recently that the Cleveland area (especially the lakefront, I think) is a regular stop on monarch butterflies’ migration journey. I’ve been seeing them all over! I was in mid-Michigan over the weekend and they were showing up there too.

Summer nights in Michigan are the best. Calypso, I hope you’re in a place where you can see the fireflies at night!

SOTD is Issey Miyake Le Feu d’Issey Light. I had a bottle of it 10-15 years ago. An unusual mix of peppery, citrus and creamy woody notes. So glad I got a decant of this one.
This review on Fragrantica made me smile: “Warm milk spilled on a table?! Yuck! Bad advertising”. I remember finding this part of the scent’s description especially appealing. Yum, not yuck for me. :)

Not sure if this fits this week’s theme, but it would have been perfect for last week’s. I’m in VCA Bois Doré (thanks to a swap pal!) and it is so gorgeous it almost makes me excited for winter (okay – not really) but definitely makes me excited for fall.

Lately more and more perfumes with woody notes go sour on me, and sometimes not until deep in the drydown. If this one doesn’t go south on me, it just might end up on my FB list *fingers crossed*

On a warm and sunny september day.

Wow! Canada-Europe mail is fast :) (i ordered them last wednesday)

Tyrannosaurus rex is very Gardoni, very nice, already a contender for the buy-list

Breaking into musk samples from Sylvaine Delacourte today.

Trying out Dovana and Florentina. Dovana is coconut musk to my nose and Florentina is iris musk. Both are nice but not that exciting…will see how they wear.

Monday, once more. A co-worker was supposed to complete something I’m waiting on over the weekend, but didn’t so… a thumb twiddler Monday, so far. To be followed later this week by full-on panic, of course, when the stuff I’m waiting on finally arrives. Can’t wait for that to start.

Lovely weather here recently, cooler temps. Like! I started on winter-is-coming chores: stacked firewood yesterday.

Over the weekend we went to the symphony in SF. It was a struggle getting husband’s bum arm into a suit jacket but he insisted so… struggle we did. The headline number was Copland’s Appalachian Spring which was indeed lovely, but the hit for us was Yuja Wang playing Ravel’s concerto for the left hand. Impressive, and my husband particularly enjoyed it, seeing as he is a piano player and his right arm is currently out of order. Fortuitously appropriate :)

Perfume! I knew I forgot to mention something! Today I’m sampling… Hermes Myrrh Eglantine at the moment. Rose myrrh. Pleasant but not for me.

Husband is improving… impatiently (sigh). He started physical therapy last week and is having a big snit that he’s not all better yet. I want one of those inflatable baseball bats so I can gently whack him over the head.

I also found Myrrh Eglantine to be meh on me. I really want Cedre Sambac and Agar Ebene.

Had a bit of laugh filling out Arielle Shoshana’s perfume matching quiz. What it lacked in percipience it made up in entertainment! (Of the nine it identified for me, 4 I have tried and felt “meh” about. 1 I did not like at all. And 1 I cannot remember but I did try it once. The remaining three are Coze, Flashback in New York, and Burning Leaves.)

Drained my sample of Beloved today. I have enjoyed it so much, but am feeling I need a break from major perfume purchases for a while (helping my son figure out where he wants to apply to college has had a curious impact on my spending proclivities…)

Fun/weird fact: This morning my beloved husband (speaking of beloved) watching me tie my shoes, says, “Ah, yer wearin’ brothel creepers. Ay, didna know you had ’em.” Brothel creepers!?!?! Who knew! Can’t tell if I secretly am enjoying the seedy British description of my shoes or not. It was definitely a first for me.

So what are brothel creepers, in American terms?

I had fun playing with the quiz too. And was duly entertained that its selections for me were 100% off target. I’d tried them all before, and disliked them all. But it was entertaining :) While I’m twiddling my thumbs here at work, maybe I’ll play with the quiz some more and see if I can figure out which answers actually get to scents I like :)

That was a fun way to put off doing more work by a few minutes! The quiz wasn’t precisely wrong for me. I’ve tried five of the suggestions, and while none of them are my favorites, I like all five of them well enough :)

We use the term Brothel Creepers down here. Also, different shoe but ‘ co- respondent shoes’ for the two-tone lace up. In Germany my friend used to call my shoes ” schnell f*#%^*+” which was a term I’d never heard for slip -ons.
I fear I haven’t started my pile of non fiction yet ( getting back to your weekend post) but I really enjoyed There, there by Tommy Orange which is set in Oakland in the lead up to a pow-wow.

Ahh. There’s dignity in co-respondent (says she creeping around goodness knows where on her fat, crepe soles)!

There, There is on my list!!! Supposed to discuss Sing, Unburied Sing at our book group this weekend and I have been procrastinating on starting it–apparently it is shatteringly (made up that word!) depressing. Been sticking to political mirth as an alternative, but better get started on the novel soon !

Wearing Knightsbridge on this chilly morning. I’m really enjoying my little decant of it, but I’m not convinced I will need any more of it once I’m done with it. It’s easy and delightful, but not particularly special.

Super excited to have mailed out all my swaps! And even more excited to be getting swaps back!!! I am doing one swap with Canada (I’m in the US) and it really isn’t scary at all. A 15-oz package costs ~$15 to ship if you get the packing slip via PayPal. That’s not so bad for the right swap.

Ahaha. I’m pretty sure you’re the reason I got Knightsbridge! Didn’t you say it smelled like happiness flying with angel wings or something similarly enthusiastic? I expect part of why I find it less exciting is that I remember the disappointment of expecting the perfume to be magical and finding it only to be great.

…What’s your opinion of the Royal Mail?

I think I did trigger the Knightsbridge frenzy :)

Royal Mail is completely unreasonable about perfume shipping. I fail to see how 1 oz of high quality perfume is more of a Dangerous Goods risk than an airplane full of jet fuel !!
That they steal a perfectly harmless bottle of Knightsbridge without any notification and do who knows what with it, frosts my biscuits.

I’m wearing the drydown of Stephane Humbert Lucas’s Blackgemstone on my collar bone. the perfume is still going strong (maybe because of the fabric at the t- shirt collar area). I now realised my nose has become quite sensitive to the smoky aromachemicals that he use. Thankfully my nose recovered after 1/2 hour. The drydown is really like lovely lemon incense sweet resin, Stephane does drydown well. I wore it to watch the new Predator, not sure why I did that. I thought I needed something smoky and dark to complement the movie experience but the Predator movie was so cheesy…urghh.

I am also wearing the drydown of Areej Le Dore’s Oud Zen on my wrist. I wasn’t that crazy about the skanky opening. It the drydown is where the magic happens. It’s still going strong on my wrist after 8 hours. I described the dry down as a strong balsamic sandalwood with hints of umami and dark tobacco.

I usually save my rose scents for winter, but I found a sample of Diptyque’s Eau Rose in the back of my cabinet this morning and went with that. I remember not loving this back in February but I’m really enjoying it on this hot fall day.

I remember thinking it was a little too sweet in cooler weather, but today it smells more like a classic rose with a bit of citrus to it – very nice! That said, I have a small Eau Rose candle (it was a GWP) and find it to be rather weakly scented for such an expensive line.

Wearing Vanilla Hinoki, but the weather might be a little too warm for it. Ordered a bottle of Oyedo to give to my husband for our 30th anniversary in a few weeks. Didn’t get anything for myself except for some Fazzolari samples – Ummagumma, Unsettled, and Fontevraud. Oh, and that Tauer 25 Annee scent. I was jarred awake by a call at 4:30 this morning by something work-related. Got on a call and then another one 30 minutes later. In between, I got ready for work and sent out emails. I’ve already pretty much worked a full day!

Anyway – I almost went commando but was saved at the last minute by my almost to be thunked sample if Kilian Woman in Gold. 3 spritzes and still going strong. Strangely, I detected an apple note – I need to investigate further.

I still have plenty of Zoologist T-Rex (3 or 5 mL increments) to swap for a donation to Florence relief or mental health advocacy. The super cute Twilly mini is still available – brand new in box – quite rare I think. You donate directly so not only do you get perfume, you also get a tax deduction AND a charitable organizations receives monetary support. Triple win! U.S. only.

It’s conservation week here and one of the bushes I have been enjoying looking at recently is the kaka beak. A kaka is a NZ forest parrot ( it has a strange swoopy doopy call ) and the plant has kaka beak shaped flowers. It’s under threat in the wild but popular in garden centres and is spectacular. It doesn’t really smell . I wonder if people still hug trees?
I’m wearing Fiele Viola , beautiful.
Snow returned to Otago yesterday but we escaped with just a cold day.

It’s supposed to be fantastic in savory cooked dishes – I heard tell of it when perusing some food blog or other, and it sounded intriguing. It’s got a distinct fennel aroma (which is why I thought it might make a nice addition to my tea), and is reputed to take a dish to another level. I caved.

Cuir de Lancome is absolutely gorgeous! What a pity that Lancome axed it. ????☹

It is strange. Especially when considering some of the scents they’ve kept in their stable.

It’s been a Manic Monday (cue the Bangles!)???? , so I am posting crazy late. I had a dentist appointment today, plus yet another one of the smoke detectors was complaining about a low battery. Ugh. And the grey clouds and rain returned today. It feels like Sunday’s gorgeous weather was just a mirage. ☔????

SOTD = back in my sample of Cristalle EdT. Calling in a bit of perfumed emotional support with this one. I also suspect that it flies under the radar in the dentist’s office, so I am not gassing anyone out.

We had a party cloudy day with high humidity. It will be raining here tomorrow. I know what you mean about the mirage. So tired of this weather. At least you smell great!

Thanks for the perfume compliment! I totally hear you on the weather. I hope it’s not a sign of what this winter is going to be like… that would be horrible!
