Wednesday scent of the day 9/5

Posted by Robin on 5 September 2018 309 Comments

It's Hump Day. Also, International Day of Charity and Freddie Mercury's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm waking up (late, again) with Terre d'Hermès, the original.

Reminder: on 9/7, wear a fragrance with cedar, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Yeah, and not sure it is worth big bucks. Part of the joy of it, originally, was how cheap it was. Plus, no idea how a decant of something so old will hold up. I wouldn’t do it.

The original Gucci Pour Homme was somewhat similar, but it’s axed too.

I used to have a bottle of that, moons ago. I think I gave it away, but I recall it being a straightforward, satisfying cedar. Dirt cheap then; I guess that’s changed.

I’m in Tam Dao. While sandalwood is the main note here, cedar is also present. I may pick it for the peace CP too – it smells so serene.

Guerlain Vetiver, for serene green on a pointlessly stressful day (endless admin battles, and a trip to Glasgow to sort out a refund of my season ticket).

PSA for the UK people… All sorts of interesting things seem to be popping up in store at tk maxx: jicky and heritage! Terre d’Hermes gift sets, lots of alien flankers, Miller Harris, AE, Stella… and I saw a 200ml bottle of no.5.

You smell great Robin! I’m not on theme today but enjoying the morning in Myrhhe Eglantine – this along with VT and Osmanthus Yunnan are my favorites from the Hermessence line. This is my first week back at work after my maternity leave and I needed an upbeat scent. I had a much longer leave then most women get in this country but still not long enough for me!

Thanks Koyel and all! It’s one supercute baby – the other “baby” is now in fourth grade ????

That still counts as a baby in my book :)

What about Ambre Narguile?? That’s the most perfect warm oriental in the world to me. If I could only have one, that would be it. Hot, ambery apple turnover.

    OJ woman today..

    Summer is not over here…

I received a gift of a manual espresso maker. I am a bit lost since I have been using the french press for a long time. I tried to make a cappuccino this morning but it tasted so so. I don’t like bitter. I think I may have to use it more to make the taste come out good me thinks.

It may taste bitter due to the water being too hot. Did you use boiling water? I use medium/low heat and watch it carefully. If the coffee is sputtering & hissing out out (vs. a slow gentle drizzle), the heat/gas is too high.
I love a good Cuban espresso, my favorite coffee ever. It takes a few tries but it’s well worth it. My grandmother’s method below.
      Choose your coffee beans.
Fill a moka pot with coffee (do not tamp down, it prevents the steam going through the grounds) and water.
      Heat over medium-low flame.
Measure sugar (I use brown sugar) into a deep cup (not metal, preferably use glass).
Pour the first drops of coffee onto your sugar to make a paste.
Whip the sugar, a tiny pinch of salt and coffee together vigorously until it lightens in color.
Pour the rest of the coffee over your mixture. Done well, it will have a cream layer.

Rest in peace, Freddie – you are missed.

SOTD is Chanel 19. I wore the EDP over the weekend and am in the EDT today. I love them equally, but today I wanted the ever-so-slight leathery note in the EDT.

I have gotten into a bad cycle of staying up very late reading and really have to stop it! I have to drag myself out of bed in the morning, and then I’m not really tired when it ought to be bedtime. I probably need to get one of those apps that bricks my kindle at midnight.

Can’t say I’ve read either of the two mentioned! It is a fun read, perfect for a hot, hazy late summer. (Be ready for a heavy dose of teenage angst, though)

But don’t you love the NYPL e book system? So easy to just click “reserve”…

Headed over to the city by the lake today to take in a Neko Case concert tonight with my bff. She will be wafting Angel, I’m sure. I plan to stop at Nordie’s on the way and sniff the new Chanels.

Which is distinct from Black Cube, Pink Cube, and the new Red Cube. And those are distinct from Black Rectangle and Pink Rectangle.

I really love a lot of the Narciso stuff, and his dresses, but his perfume naming conventions… Was there really no one to step in and say, “sir, this is going to cause nothing but confusion.” I mean, come on.

Have a great time! Downtown Chicago is a fabulous place for an outdoor show of any kind, but especially music. Back in the 80’s, Springsteen was playing at Soldiers Field (is it still called that?). I was with a bunch of friends hanging out on a boat on the lake listening on the cheap and enjoying life. Yes, alcohol was involved. ????

The travel size is perfect for this scent, because I really need to re-apply every 4-5 hours. So longevity is not that great, but I dont mind. I just leave it in my bag and always carry it with me.

Its beautiful, its like roaming around in a fairytale. And I bet T-Rex would love it there as well!

Endless pine forests on hills and mountains, small towns with half timbered houses, lovely meadows, lots of apple trees everywhere, and in almost valley there is a castle or castle ruin to enhance the fairytale mood. ????

I went by car (I live in The Netherlands), but if you want to go there by plane my best guesses for nearest airports are Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Strasbourg (france), Zürich (switzerland), maybe even Frankfurt.
It also depends on the places you want to stay/visit and if you are planning to hire a car. The Black Forest stretches over an area of 6,009.2 km2 (2,320.2 sq mi) – according to wikipedia :), and touches French and Swiss borders.

Have you noticed your perfumes smelling different as you travel from place to place? Having moved to a climate that’s pretty much the polar opposite from the one I left, I sure have.

Terracotta is not a favorite of mine either, but I did enjoy wearing it recently, smelling totally different facets than I had picked up on previously.

Good question! I wouldn’t say I’ve come across any that smell “different” but I do think temperature and humidity affect longevity and performance. I have pretty good luck with most perfumes lasting on my skin.

One perfume specifically seems to last longer in humid climates. I wore Corsica Furiosa (❤️❣️????????????!) for the first time in a while the other day, and the beautiful drydown that I’m used to seemed a little weak here in the desert.

The perfume or the series? I recommend both???? The series is about the rise and fall of the Rajneeshi religious cult in the 80s. It was interesting to watch the whole story now as I remember seeing snippets of news items about it in the 80s and we made jokes about it in high school but I really had no idea what it was all about then.

Again not following the CP in PdN Odalisque. It smells vintage in a bad way, and looking at the notes (oakmoss, jasmine, LOTV, etc), I totally see why. I may or may not give it a couple more tries–I still have a couple wears left in the sample–but I doubt it’ll grow much on me.

Only two folks were wearing Giorgio when I was in high school- a classmate who was a professional model and me (cause I asked her what she was wearing and then rushed out to get it at the one dept store that carried it exclusively)….this was before it was ubiquitous and oversprayed…it really was a beautiful scent if worn judiciously/

Not sure exactly what you mean by “vintage in a bad way” but in my sampling of PdN fragrances, I found most of them to carry a signature accord that I’m not at all fond of. Kind of a fruity chypre thing?

I’ve thus stopped trying them, though I do love her Patchouli Intense on my H (and didn’t particularly like it on myself.)

SOTD is the lingering traces of PHI and French Toast. Made some again this morning with sourdough bread and the tang next to the syrup-sweetness is a nice contrast.

I’ve been in a big fat slump the past week and don’t know why. Other than I hate this apartment and the heat. Not keen on the area either. So I did what any other anyway 13 year old would do- I binge watched the Twilight series! Can’t say that it helped much but other than the stunted dialogue, teen drama, and bad acting, it was wonderful! I’m still Team Edward all the way.

Oy! I need to find a good pick-me-up perfume today.

RIP Freddie! We all miss you✌????

Yes, lots of sage, which is nice to pick and crush for a quick sniff when hiking. Sadly, it’s still in the 90’s so I only stick my head outside if I have to. T-Rex is fed up. She’s an outdoor gal. She does make use of the balcony in the morning, but after that, it’s full on sunshine, which makea the decking blister worthy.

I think as soon as the weather turns (if it ever does!), it will help a whole lot. I have cabin fever and there is nothing I’m interested in doing in the outdoors in this heat. Plus, I’m just exhausted from working nights. No problem sleeping, the problem is sleeping all the time. I think I have a summer version of SAD, no joke. Happens almost every summer. Yesh…I’m taking deep breathing some Safran Troublant to untrouble my summer sick soul.

Cedar perfume failure today with Jo Malone Sweet Lime & Cedar. Blah don’t care for it at all and hoping it completely fades away soon as happens with many JMs. I even sprayed a little Wood Sage & Sea Salt on top to try to improve it, but that didn’t seem to help. This sample is thunking its way to the give-away pile. I almost wore Terre d’Hermes today and should have. There’s always tomorrow!

I saw your question about Vanilla Hinoki late last night, but to answer your question: when they were available to sniff in person at TL I was able to try both versions and almost always preferred the oils. Not sure why, but I think the top notes in the edps smelled more jarring and medicinal to me and seemed more toned down in the oils-highlighting the mid/base notes more. I also like oils, too. I know some people don’t like wearing oil. And, they’re smaller amounts and less $ paid which is a win for me, especially because I liked and now own a few of them.
And yes to a Satori split! I’ll think about it…

In an early-morning application of Atelier Vanille Insensee. It’s smelling decidedly beachy – briny and salty – with wafts of caramel. (Like a sea-salted caramel, perhaps?) I’ve had a sample of this kicking around for years, and have never picked up on any of these facets, but it’s entirely possible that I’ve worn it in the past without ever having given it much thought…

It’s also making me feel like I’m describing LL Fleur de Corail as that’s often described using the same terms. I’ve not really picked up on those notes with the LL, though, except the caramel. I could compare the 2, but lazy.

I sure have plenty of scents with cedar (looking at you, Serge Lutens), but the weather’s not right for them. I’m in 8 !!! sprays of Moschino Funny. EIGHT, PEOPLE! Yes, me, Miss 1-2 sprays is wearing 8 sprays today. But it’s basically gone after a couple of hours, sigh.

We might finally, finally have some good news from worker’s comp… fingers crossed… it appears they approved physical therapy already for my husband’s broken elbow. AND at the PT place associated with his surgeon! Doesn’t that sound sensible? So the surgeon can check on him at every PT visit? So of course last week it wasn’t looking possible. First, because the surgeon is on their ‘approved provider’ list, but his PT folks aren’t. Well they are, for wound care, but not for PT. [Do Not Get Me Started] And second, because the Process Must Be Followed, and the Process is: recover enough to be ready for PT; THEN the surgeon submits that report; THEN the insurance company transfers you to *another* insurance company for PT; THEN you get the list of approved PT providers; THEN you get to find one who is actually able to take you on. If you are detecting a more than slight time lag there between ‘ready for PT’ and ‘actually getting PT’ you are spot-on. But if we really do have approval now he can start as soon as he’s ready….! Fingers, toes and everything crossed!

Happy to see Fiori di Capri has a cedar base note, so I’m spraying away. I’m so ready for Fall weather….

Have been using the Dyson I got on Prime Day to keep up with cat residue…at least in our living room. Soooo much easier. I just wish it could declutter for me….

You got a robotic one, right? Mine has been a game changer. And when the robovac cleans, I do a little cleaning, too, which I can’t say I was much in the habit of previously. And I also take credit for the work the robot does, so I’ve really upped my game ;)

No, not quite that easy. It’s a cordless stick. But powerful. So easy to just do a quick pass and stay ahead of the game. Where I will really need to use it is on the new couch to keep it decent….

It’s still really hot in northeastern Ohio and I am sitting in my air conditioned house. Just sprayed the littlest bit of SDV. I had forgotten that it was Freddie Mercury’s birthday today. In November there is supposed to be a Queen movie called Bohemian Rhapsody.

Oh, I didn’t know we were neighbors! It sure is – 91 in the shade at my house. I just moved here this summer and am curious what to expect for fall, if you don’t mind sharing.

Weather in Cleveland is goofy. It’s either really hot or really cold. When they say to expect 3 inches of snow, expect to have 6 or more. Fall is hot or cool but can be really pretty, hoping it won’t be a wet fall like it was a wet spring. Go out to orchards and pick Apple’s or get apple cider.

Another day of beastly heat and humidity. Tested some samples this morning because I had errands to do out in the heat. Now that I’m home under the AC I am going to take a shower and put on some Baccarat Rouge 540.

I’d heard about it being Freddie Mercury’s birthday on the radio this morning. I’ve been trying to visualize him at the age of 72.

Hoping that everyone in Gordon’s path stays safe & dry! ☔????

More heat & humidity today. On the plus side, it means that the cats were able to take advantage of all the sunbeams in their favorite napping spots this afternoon. I guess they are charging up for this weekend’s wet and cloudy forecast. ????????

SOTD = back in Quartz pour Femme. So nice, I had to wear it twice! ????

We get a lot of afternoon sun on my side of the floor. Soon, we’ll have to adjust the blinds towards the ends of the day.

I love hearing about your cats napping on sunbeams!

At one point in the afternoon, all 3 cats were lined up in the bay window, all stretched out. Like cat baguettes.

I like to think Freddie at 72 would be writing songs, working for social change, and behaving like a general nuisance, an all-around bad-a$$ and still performing.

Just touching 80 today. Pulled out Papillon Salomé and it feels like the wrong choice. A man accosted me in the park; he seemed probably harmless but my lizard brain was freaking out. I think I need a change of direction with a shower and some White Linen.

Thanks everybody! I am okay. Fortunately it was bright daylight on a busy street. I was walking my dog. The irony is this guy following me trying to start a conversation said he didn’t want to scare me ???? From his demeanor, I would guess mental illness/drugs. I can sympathize with those issues, but they made the situation unpredictable.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

Because. Nice to wear an old friend.

The results of the great purge yielded 7 bags / boxes. It would have been 8 if my mom had not decided to curate my donations for herself. In any case, I will count the overall effort a success and have earned my $100 for the Splitmeet. I have quite a bit more to go and it will take more temporary shifting. Although I have yet to find the ones missing in action, I unearthed a bag of perfumes I forgot about (hello Oeillet Bengale, among others). And, an old wallet that contained $160 and change, almost enough for that bottle of Zoologist T-Rex.

Tomorrow’s another day. I better get busy with cedar perfumes. I plan to participate on Friday.

My mom ended up with a net 15 more pieces of clothing after giving up 6.

As to the wallet, it was actually from 2013 and I know that because there were several different receipts from late 2013. At least there were no lottery tickets!

A long, perfume-free day today. I was at the animal shelter this morning and have to get there so early I basically stagger out of the house half-asleep, so I forgot to wear anything. Then this afternoon I had a medical appt. Now I am home and wearing Onda edp.

    Freddie, RIP. What a voice.
