Friday scent of the day 8/31

Posted by Robin on 31 August 2018 295 Comments

That's it for August, so don't forget your rabbits tomorrow! And happy Fabric Friday. Our community project for today: wear a perfume named for some type of clothing or fabric, OR wear a scent you associate with a certain kind of clothing or fabric, OR wear a perfume with a fabric-related note (suede, cotton, etc). Thanks to Glannys for the suggestion!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Zero points for me this week! I'm packing to go home, and when I get there late afternoon I might find something that fits and put it on and report back. Meantime, I'm in Hermès Un Jardin Sur Le Nil body lotion, again.

Reminder: on 9/7, Wear a fragrance with cedar, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Honestly, I don’t smell much leather. What I like about it, is how smooth it is. It’s seamless, if that makes sense. It’s also has a depth that the original doesn’t have. I think this one and the taste of fragrance one are my favorites.

Add me to those enjoying White Linen today. I savor the little bit left in my vintage bottle and usually only wear it on the Fourth of July but I brought it out for today’s community project. So many memories! Although I don’t always wear linen when I wear this scent, I do always wear all white. A perfect scent to say goodbye to summer!

Much lighter! Though the sandalwood base is obvious, but the whole thing is freshened with a dose of herbs, citrus, and a bit of narcissus. It’s honestly a bit more Guerlain-ish than Samsara. Though ironically I think it almost smells like a Sophia Grojsman scent.

Serge Noire- I don’t spray it on myself, it’s too intense and weird. But I spray it on a handkerchief and keep it in my pocket. Love to take a huff every now and then! I have the newer version (from 5 years ago), not the newest, don’t know how it’s changed, but mine isn’t the original original. So confusing! Anyway, mine’s a little softer and lighter than the original ‘fume. I think….

I tried Serge Noire back when it was relatively new, in 2010, and I did not like it one little bit (well, the drydown was pretty good, but too little too late). A few years ago I tried it again because I am stubborn like that and I liked it enough to buy it — as far as I can tell it was reformulated into a very different scent, the incense tamped down and missing the weird burning-rubber note but with a leather note which I am sure wasn’t there before. It’s not a great work of art, but it’s lovely.

I bought a bottle after testing with a small decant. At some point during the testing period, the dry-down (and it was a long one) left me surrounded by a gorgeous cloud of incense. I haven’t experienced the same gorgeousness after buying the bottle, unfortunately. I’ll have to give this one a few more chances during winter.

The original was horrendous, smelled like a camel-driver’s armpit. I’ve been too afraid to retest it. It’s the only sample I’ve ever sealed up and immediately walked outside to the trash bin.

Well, there are a lot of ‘Cuir’ and ‘Leather’, scents, but here are some other examples (including names of garments):

      Tweed
      White Linen
      Organza
      La Petite Robe Noire
      Serge Noire
      Bas de Soie
      Eau de Fleur de Soie
All Cashmere scents (too many to list, and I include PG Cadjmere)
      Daim Blond
      White Suede
      Clean’s Cotton scents
      Jersey
Lots of Velours scents (Lavande Velours, for example)…

I was reading my favorite weather blog this morning, and even guys were talking about Serena’s recent outfits — that is a sponsorship deal that has really paid off for Nike! I thought that White Linen was one of the best fits for this project but since this perfume doesn’t work for me, the only thing I have is a turned mini that I use on a decorative display with other “just for the ornamental use” bottles, so wearing it was out of question.

It’s a perfume from a small artisanal line in Brooklyn New York and it’s based on an ancient Roman chypre recipe (according the website) made with notes of fig, rose, calamus root, styrax and labdanum.

No SOTD yet, but I opened a new tube of JM Pomegranate Noir exfoliating body wash this morning and am enjoying a thin veil of spiciness around me. When it wears off (if it wears off), I’ll dig out my Bottega Veneta for some points. It’s so soft and really reminds me of the scent of suede.

Happy Friday everyone! Have a great lllooooonnnnggggg weekend!

I like PN perfume, so I imagine that all other products in that line would smell great also.
BV was my back-up plan though I thought that leather/suede, while being better than not participating, was a little like cheating :) But it’s a beautiful perfume – CP-compliant or not.

It smells just like the perfume in the shower, but is so faint afterward that it has moments of smelling like a different fragrance…then I’ll get the occasional full blown whiff of it hours later. That’s what I love about JM bath products. They linger all day!

BV was cheating a little, but I love it!

I was going to go with NV Niral for CP compliance. I didn’t like it that much the 1st time I tested it, but it’s cooler today so thought maybe that might change things, which it didn’t. I applied a goodly amount on the back of my hand and the overall smell (lipstick-y) is fine but meh to me, but there’s one of those woody ambers in the base that is a deal breaker, so I washed it off.
I’m now in LL Iris 39, which I generally only wear in winter for some reason- I first wore it with a purple-y blue polar fleece shirt because that was my perfect match for it at the time. So iris colored polar fleece it is today!

You smell great! I wore Iris 39 recently and thoroughly enjoyed it. For some reason only gourmand-leaning or somehow “warm” otherwise (e.g., with amber dry down) iris perfumes feel like colder weather perfumes for me. The rest are spring or fall.

Just by chance – I’d forgotten the CP – I am wearing Niral today. I don’t get the ambery base and like it a lot. It’s a rosey iris on me what that particular NVC thing I can’t name. A certain powdery slightly milky something.

Cleaned and culled my perfume collection again. I have 3 bottles going in the swap meet, I’ve unboxed some others, and today I will hunt for a better box to keep all my bottles in while traveling. It’s possible I may end up with a bigger box. You know, for breathing room. ????

SOTD is a long lasting spritz of SL Chergui which I wore to bed last night in an effort to seduce some cooler weather to come my way. It will last until I take a shower and change for work, then I’ll wear something a bit lighter.

To all those who have a long weekend, I hope you thoroughly and completely enjoy it! ✌????

I understand your concern. It was a worry for me when I started traveling too. But, when I have been in the van 24/7 (October ‘17 through July ‘18) I have been in either cold weather )Oregon and Napa) or have been able to maintain the temp at a reasonable level by parking in the shade. If it was too hot, like now, I was either in a hotel or renting an apartment and my perfumes came in with me. Last summer I was in an efficiency. I do have a freezer/fridge combo which will run full time after solar is installed, but it will have food in it???????? So, if that is a concern for swappers, I totally understand. I did find a nice sturdy box with a lid at Home Goods. ????

I didn’t participate in the CP today; instead, I chose Boys by Kilian. To me, it smells like the big brother of A Lab on Fire’s Paris/L.A. It skews a bit too masculine for my personal tastes, but I like it and will happily use the purse spray until it’s gone.

(And the cola accord is VERY pronounced in this, which is doing nothing for my resolve to cut seriously back on soda! Coke Zero is my weakness, and I suppose there are worse habits to have, but I was drinking far too many in a day and it was starting to affect my sleep.)

P.S. HoM scents are among the very few I wear an awful lot: I love Forbidden, Woo and L‘Arrivee and am on my second full-sized bottle of the first two (that‘s a first). I tend not to mention them much because of the advertised prices (I pay half price thanks to joint orders with other fans on parfumo, which keeps the loyalty discount points topped up. Btw: several scents are currently on sale at just under half price because of damaged packaging: they‘re on the HoM website under “scratch & dent”).

You smell amazing…I remember several years ago wanting to revisit that one and the SA almost refusing to get me the tester behind the counter saying I would not like it…the bottle said “cologne” so I must have given myself 10 sprays all over including my jacket…I had forgotten that older ELs were powerhouses and I reeked! But my jacket smelled insanely good for weeks….I would occasionally sneak into the coat closet to sniff the sleeve.

Enjoy your french food tonight !

And yes I deeply regretted it after I sprayed but when I saw the word cologne I assumed it would be lighter than EDT. Honestly even with my scent devouring skin it was as strong as a modern extrait.

Hi All. My son who is almost 16 is interested in wearing fragrance (yay). He is most interested in a store brand called Surf, it’s as you would imagine, clean, aquatic and a little boring (boo). I totally recognize that boring for me might be exhilarating for him, and I want him to start with something non-threatening and that he feels good wearing. There’s plenty of time for him to become more adventurous. Any suggestions out there for a teen friendly fragrance that doesn’t break the bank? I’m really just so glad he doesn’t want to wear Axe! Thanks in advance! ????

I’ll second Terre d’Hermes. Also, Voyage d’Hermes. Both are great mainstream offerings.
Slightly more “niche” (though not really since they’ve been acquired) – Atelier Cologne Bois Blonds, Trefle Pur and a couple more from the original line-up.

I third this suggestion- Terre d’Hermes smells fresh, earthy and lovely and is easy to wear. A 1.7 ounce bottle can be had for $40- which is really rather nice and will last a long time!

Some of the Jo Malones are great for a teenager as well as some from Phlur brand which also has a nice sampler set. Oh, and Dame Perfumery which sells inexpensive travel sizes and is always generous with free samples. These are the most represented in my teenage son,s collection

I drag my 14 year old son into Sephora and make him smell things. So far he has gone pretty mainstream with Invictus Intense and Armani Code Profumo. I found a botle of the Invictus Intense at Marshalls and got a mini of the Armani for him. If you can get him to go into the store, it’s an easy way to find what appeals (besides aquatics).

SOTD is Iris Nazarena. It would pair perfectly with a pair of black trousers and a black turtleneck, in my opinion.

Burning my first Atelier Cologne candle… very disappointed. It literally smells like melted wax and has ZERO scent (even if I leave the room and come back, or hold it up to my face). Disappointed because I love their soaps.

Most recent candle love? Shockingly, this Target Black Pepper Moss, which is a nice green mossy floral thing with great throw.

I had to think hard on this one. While I have a few leathers/cuirs, it’s been way too hot for that kind of thing. I did consider Hanae Mori Haute Couture, but decided against it. Then I remembered I have a teeny tiny vintage splash of Crepe de Chine! I must say that in the heat wave we’ve been having, gauzy silk IS the way to go fabric-wise as well!

Am in Fresh Cream Warm Cashmere, which is chemically (in a good way) and lovely and has NOTHING to do with cashmere or wool in general- this feels ‘silky’ and subtly smooth. Beautiful sillage that makes people smile.

I couldn’t bring myself to attempt to wear White Linen to work, but I am participating in Armani Prive Amber Soie (silk). If I was to give it a two word summary like The Guide does, it would be anise amber. It’s lovely and of course, discontinued.

I’m hoping to get it together and post my thoughts on the Essential Parfums line in the weekend poll. I have also tried two of the five in the new vanilla line from Sylvaine Delacourte and was impressed with both. I want to make time to try the others this weekend, and I’ll post thoughts as I try them.

The longed-for and promised cooler weather has arrived! Whoo hoo! Alas, I can’t quite take full advantage of it… seem to have picked up a scratchy throat in the past 24 hours. I’m not sure if it is allergies acting up, or an annoying little virus. So, lots of hot tea and all the extra snoozing I can put into my schedule. ☕

SOTD = Etro Paisley EdP, from the sample stash. This is a close cousin to Shaal Nur, according to my nose. I can pick out citrus, cardamom, ylang, and maybe some faint vanilla. No matching paisley clothes, though… a grey T shirt will have to do.

That thought did cross my mind… all it takes is someone sneezing or coughing and then opening a door. However, I was also dealing with allergy symptoms earlier this week. At least I have stopped sneezing today! ????

Oh no! Hope you nip this in the bud. I’ve been taking Echinacea everyday as a preventive. You’re supposed to take it as soon as you feel something coming on and it will lessen the symptoms. Fight! Fight! Fight!

I’m in Richard James Savile Row, which in the notes list printed on the back of the box officially includes what they call “Clean Starched Shirt Accord”.

I was thinking about spraying Bas de Soie for today CP, but went with Mito edp instead- such a gorgeous fragrance!!!! I fell in love with it from the first sniff- beautiful and unique green composition, that changes from the top notes to the base and lasts forever. What more could I wish for?
To my horror, I developed a bad reaction to it- the skin behind the ears became red, irritated and itchy. What a let down!!! I still have 2 small decants and will try to spray on my arms.Sadly, NO FB for me…
Matching fabric- olive green silk taffeta.

I had no reaction to Mito sample from Luckyscent couple years ago and I am pretty sure it was VdP, not edp. Last year I got 3 decants from a very sweet and generous NSTer and had a reaction toward the end of the first decant, but for some reason I thought things will be different with the second decant. I feel like an idiot, but I rarely fall for a fragrance, I can test hundred perfumes and find one or two FBworthy ones.
        Bummer! Bummer! Bummer!
Mito literally blew my socks off :(

That is a total bummer. Do you think you’d retry the VdP, or is it all just too risky?

Oh, dear! You are taking the words out of my mouth! Honestly,I am willing to take a small risk and retry; after all I don’t have any respitory problems and the juice is beyond anything I have tried!!!

I am affraid Mito will stain them- the liquid is deep amber color and leaves brown stains on my arms.

Way off theme in La Danza delle Libullele by Nobile 1942. After several weeks wearing the same 3 scents because…
    – all my perfumes are packed away for moving
    – I am too busy to sort anything new
    – I haven’t been enjoying perfumes so much for a while now
…I was suddenly in the mood for something new and remembered I have a bunch of Nobile 1942 samples.

Well, I like the burst of fresh apple up front but Oh My God it is so SWEEEEEEET. Tooth-rottingly. It reminds me of Keiko Mecheri “Ume” which also has that zingy-fruit-with-intense-sweetness thing going on. I shall leave this to its fan club.

Next week is my last week on my London contract and the week after I start in The Hague. I’ve never been.

Half our stuff has now moved to Malaga and *most* of it arrived unsmashed. :^S

Tomorrow we are meeting an old friend who has helped us with building and design work, to arrange a week of fixing up and freshening the UK house so we can sell it more quickly. And then it goes on the market and hopefully by the end of the year there will be nothing tying us to that part of our old life that we’ve outgrown. :^)

SOTD = L’AP Tea for Two

I associate this with black lace. I should wear this more often!

In the continuing bank saga, I opened a new account for myself to leverage a good bonus offer. The banker was nice but sloppy … so sloppy that besides the two pieces of ID I showed her plus slowly mentioning my SSN, when I got the signature “card” to sign, I saw that she misspelled my last name and my SSN was wrong. Oy vey.

    Pets and their idiotic owners:
    – a woman carrying groceries and holding a longish leash for her greyhound walking on the sidewalk of a very busy state highway. She was walking on the inside while the dog loped besides her INCHES away from the road.

    – couple jogging with a poodle between them

The great purge of 2018 is coming along. I still have A LOT of work to do!

Well, I probably described the highway incorrectly…it is a major highway where you’re allowed to go 40 mph in these here parts that’s not the Garden State Parkway or NJ Turnpike. There are 2 lanes going each direction and businesses on both sides. One wrong move by that dog would have meant a bloody end for it.

I have decided that going forward, I need to institute a “one in two out” rule and the in and out do not need to be of the same type of thing…just more out than in!

Wearing a plain cotton t-shirt and Levi’s, decided to wear Green by Byredo to go with. I’ve grown to appreciate this discontinued gem. It starts almost too much green but the effect is so invigorating and the green almond and musk dry down is sophisticated yet carefree. A crisp white shirt would also be a perfect match with this scent.
