Friday scent of the day 7/13

Posted by Robin on 13 July 2018 309 Comments

Happy Friday the 13th, happy birthday to Harrison Ford and Patrick Stewart, and happy Aquatic Friday! Our community project for today: wear an aquatic fragrance, or something meant to evoke the sea.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

My pick, although I won't put it on until later today: 4160Tuesday What I Did On My Holidays.

Reminder: on 7/20 we're having a Cocktail Party...tell us about your favorite cocktail (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), provide a recipe if you like, and wear a perfume that would complement your choice. It doesn't have to be a boozy fragrance!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Italians think Friday the 13th is a lucky day. I was born on the 13th of August but it was on a Monday instead of a Friday. I probably would have been luckier had I been born on a Friday.

I stole someone’s idea today and am wearing Wood sage and sea salt. I layered it with BBW At the Beach body lotion. Beaches aren’t really for me, I prefer rivers and streams. Hope everyone has a great day!

A beach on a river is still a beach, no? A good swimming hole in a river is about as good as it gets IMO.

Robin, sounds like a perfect choice for both the community project and your vacation!

    I did some crazy layering:
    Heeley Sel Marin
Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt
a dab of Molinard Vanille Marine

    So much fun!

It worked pretty well. Lots of sea air smell. I was afraid that Wood Sage & Sea Sale would disappear immediately, but it performed better than average Malone and blended well with Sel Marin. Molinard kept quiet, which was another surprise. I enjoyed this combination.

Mostly sea air and caramel, but it is more complex than that. Sea notes are quite realistic (think seaweed, iodine) but tend to disappear soon, though saltiness remains. Caramel note is very noticeable, but sometimes it becomes more mature – sort of vanilla/amber/benzoin accord. Overall, it is a sweet and salty aquatic but with some traits of oriental gourmand. I like it.

I’m wearing Sel Marin today. The last time I tried it I wasn’t moved, so I gave the sample to my husband. Today I’m loving it, and I may just steal the sample back.

I am at home again after our German adventure. I don’t know how long it will take for our cat to leave my side – she was extremely happy to see us. I don’t think I can take her to yoga with me, so she’ll have to get off my lap in the not-too-distant future.

    Have a happy Friday!

Hello! I am wearing Roudnitska’s Ocean Rain, which I love in part for the hilarious contrast on Basenotes of glowing reviews (“Roudnitska’s swan song is every bit a masterpiece as anything else he ever made”) and terrible ones (“It smells somewhere between BO and a Toxic waste plant. Ocean Rain? Maybe in 500 years when we have completely destroyed the planet will Ocean Rain smell like this.”) To me it’s a weird but calm and wearable herbal thing, like if you took the melon and flowers out of Diorella and replaced them with kitchen herbs and pine resin. While I don’t really think it smells like rain near the ocean, I do think it conjurs that smell mood in a more abstract, associative way.

I’m in Agua de Colonia Concentrada…because it has Agua in the name. That’s the best I could do with the CP this week 😀

I’m wearing a very watery (although not strictly speaking aquatic in the calone way) scent in Un jardin après la mousson, which autocorrect keeps wanting to change into garden and mutton. Anyway, it’s my favourite Jardin and my favourite green melon, for overripe melon I prefer Emotionnelle.
I started the day in MDCI Une nuit andalouse, which is kind of nice but rather undetermined and nowhere near the best of what MDCI has to offer.
Hope you are having a great holiday!

Hahaha Garden Mutton is the avantgarde version of Mary’s little lamb. I love that perfume, it’s my favorite Jardin too – but it doesn’t seem to be as popular with anyone else I know.
My second favorite “wet garden” smell is Annick Goutal Un Matin D’Orage but it is less herbal so it’s not quite as fresh .

Wearing Annick Goutal Vetiver (1985), a salty vetiver that smells of ocean spray. I regret not buying it before it was discontinued. My decant is getting dangerously low. There’s a newer cologne version that I’ve never tried. If you’ve smelled it, please weigh in!

I tried whatever version Nordstrom had on their shelves a couple of years ago. I wasn’t crazy about it. My recollection is that it smelled like seaweed, but according to my notes it got sweet and floral. At the time I wrote, “very odd progression.”

I’ll add the caveat that marine frags are not my fave, and I find vetiver challenging, so feel free to ignore my input here 😉

CM8, what does it make you choose a specific bottle? Do you take the ones you like less, or the ones that you use less? or any other concept? I am trying to figure out how to keep finishing things.

That’s an interesting question pl67! Last night I made a list of all the bottles that I consider “done” (either through usage or confiscation) and there does not seem to be a pattern that I can see….I made a decision that I wasn’t going to hoard any more fragrances so I am just kinda going with the flow…I picked Melograno because I was completely unfamiliar with it (I received it as a gift …partially used vintage bottle) and it was love at first sniff. I thought it would make a great non citrus summer scent and I wanted to wear it on a daily basis to really get to know it. Right now I think I can officially consider it “done” because my son took the remains of the splash decant I made of it…I think there is something like maybe 8 -10 ml left of it. Not sure what I will move on to next….I thought perhaps Montale’s Soleil di Capri because the bottle feels nearly empty (but I can’t see the juice) so it would probably be done in a few days. I also brought up two of the Berdoues that were in the basement….each about 1/3 full….my goal is twofold….stop hoarding and use the juice lovingly and lavishly until I get down to maybe 4-5 bottles….after that, not sure….

Interesting! After I finished all summer decants next week, I will jump to the samples, finish what is left and then focus on bottles than do not have much juice on them. I will probably use the same pattern for all the seasons.

Before you know it your collection will be down a good size….I don’t like having partial samples lying around the house and I tend to use up the decants one at a time (with a few exceptions like Tempo which I am saving to wear in the cooler weather but will then finish). I think for me I would rather have a few bottles that I truly truly love and very few samples or decants lying all over the place. At least this is where I am at in this moment 😉

you can count on me to support you in the use it up campaign and also to talk you out of buying new stuff if you want me too 🙂

I am more that happy that you give me your support in “the use it up campaign and also to talk me out of buying new stuff”. I need to get serious and responsible about my collection. There are many wasted perfumes that are waiting for me to give all the love they deserve. 🙂

Chocolatemarzipan8, the Non Blonde has a glorious review of it. It wears close to the skin but has excellent staying power. I would call it a bitter green chypre (I detect real oakmoss) with salty notes and driftwood.
It really smells like the beach in N. California to me. There’s a trail along the Sea Cliff/Land’s End neighborhood in San Francisco that smells precisely like it.

Nice!!!! I bet that real oakmoss smells divine…have you ever smelled real oakmoss? I bought some from Eden Botanicals many years ago and it really was a perfume unto itself…problem is it was incredibly sticky and stained the skin.

I smelled the real thing at an open house Mandy Aftel hosted in Berkeley a few years back.
The oak moss and her ambergris tincture made me swoon. 🙂

Taking a break today from the “Use it Up” project to participate in the CP.

Wearing Profumum Roma Acqua di Sale, which I love and I am taking advantage that my boss finally stopped wearing it. In fact she has not worn any perfumes in a long time. What a relief!
Busy, crazy Friday here at work and looking forward to a quiet weekend. Be well all!

Ha!!! I am glad that you can enjoy that one again 🙂

My weekend might not be so quiet…the mini marzipans are making a third and final pilgrimage to Koreatown before the two eldest head to college next month. I ‘might’ tag along on the train ride into the city but then go my own separate way (who wants to hang out with their middle aged mom? LOL)…..I am debating between taking a long walk up to my old childhood haunt , Lincoln Center, where I performed as a child or to visit the new SAKS second floor beauty and finally sample so many of the fragrances everyone has been talking about…..I am a bit scared of the temptations that await, though…. 😉

I am so glad you and the mini marzipans are going to be in town again. At least it is not going to be too hot. Enjoy the food! I would suggest go to SACKS. It is a new 2nd floor and worth the visit. The time I went there I was very determined that I was not going to buy anything and I stick to it. I really had a nice time without the pressure of wanting something.

Oh, wow! What kind of performances did you do at Lincoln Center? I recently watched an episode of Great Performances about the process of building the facility in the 50s. One of the people interviewed had been a child performer at the old theater, and was still performing there. Maybe he’s someone you worked with!

I performed with American Ballet Theatre and also with London Festival Ballet (for those of you old enough to remember I met Nureyev and he was kind enough to pose for a picture with me…he was so kind and gracious…now Barishnikov on the other hand…..) as a young ballet dancer and I sang opera with the Metropolitan Opera and the NYC Opera as a child. I will tell you that the experiences were surreal…you could not even imagine the size of those stages!!!!

It was interesting but also not as glamourous as one might think….lots of hard work, sacrificing and a bit of a loss of childhood….nonetheless, a very unique set of experiences that have shaped me into who I am today 🙂

My sister and I saw Nureyev dance Giselle one year on my birthday.
Lincoln Center despite all the drama, still is a magical place.
My mom went to high school with Gerald Arpino, he introduced us to the Jofrrey dancers.

EdM Bleue for aquatic Friday. It is drizzly this morning, but hopefully it will clear for an afternoon at the beach. Rain before 7, done by 11 as my dad says.????
So, I am at my parents house and yesterday I spotted a perfume mini inside the bathroom medicine cabinet on the level of the house I stay in. I asked my mom where it came from and she said she thought it was mine. It is now, lol. I thought it was Noa and dabbed some on at bedtime. Definitely not Noa, so I did some internet searching and it is Lancome Attraction. Very similar bottle, but I haven’t even heard of this perfume!? Have any of you ever worn it?

I was rooting around in my “some day I have to give these bottles away” box to try and locate the Lancome Attraction madtowngirl referenced above, and I found a mini of Jean Patou Sublime. As happens quite a bit when I’m rummaging through a perfume stash, I dabbled (I tend to forget what stuff smells like if I haven’t worn it in a while). It’s definitely got that chypre thing going, and is quite potent.

I’ll try to participate in the CP post-shower. Happy Friday, everybody!

I’m in Estee Lauder Sensuous Nude. The opening is a bit challenging for me (I have kind of a hard time with “beach” notes) but I love the drydown. It smells like sun-warmed skin after a day at the beach.

Today has already been far more productive than yesterday, which I spent glued to the tv watching that congressional hearing. Sheesh. Now I’ve got a slew of phone calls to make that I’ve been putting off (does everyone hate making phone calls or is it just me?)

At least one will be fun – I’ll be calling the Cleveland Orchestra for our subscription. Interestingly, they’re doing 2 performances we recently saw that I’m thrilled to be able to see again. One is John Adams conducting his piece, Scheherazade 2. The other is Kirill Gerstein playing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No 3. We saw him play it last year and when it was over, I turned to my husband and said, “Why did we only get tickets to one performance of this? I want to go all 3 nights in a row.” Now we can! 😀

I was testing out some samples today – one was By Kilian, though I couldn’t read the name (I didn’t have my glasses on). Whatever it was, it smelled great on me. I later found my glasses, and checked the label. It was Woman in Gold. So, you were right – although Gold Knight was my first choice of the two, I have come around to the second!

Reporting back from the trip to Zonda Nellis: GOOD GRIEF – they had a sign up saying “call to make an appointment”! And this was despite posting their hours just like a regular-joe shop. Are they just a little up themselves and la-di-dah? These are after all the people who for years had “As seen on Dynasty” sign in the window. At least there were many other places to visit on Granville Street.

    Happy Friday!

Here in Arrakis water is precious!

Am wearing Lavinila’s Water deo + Florida Water. It will be 97F FOR THE WEEKEND, and I think refreshment is called for! This duos is perfect for that!

The Lavanila deos are my favorite out of the many (MANY) natural/non-antiperspirant deodorant brands I’ve tried.

Have any other deodorant recommendations for this especially hot summer??

I am really impressed with the Lavinila deos and they are surprising effective. TMI time: I glide it not only under the arms, but also down the thighs so I don’t have any thigh rub.

Schmidts Deo is very nice, but I find that you will need to re- apply.

Only second time posting, but wanted to share my new found love for Kenzo Acqua and participate in this community project!

I picked this up on a whim in the duty free; to me, it smell exactly like salted pineapple. It’s a very happy, summery scent, although rather linear. I have been enjoying wearing it on hot days.

Forgive me, Donnatella for I have sinned. I had found an unopened bottle of vintage Jicky and got it for $100. It might be late 80’s or early 90’s but hey that’s vintage. Wearing Diorling today.

Trying out Myrrhe Egilantine hermessence this morning. Not on theme but had to try it. Stopped by Hermes to see my favorite SA and had a wonderful time though I can’t afford 99% of what is in the store. Besides getting a hug and buying some shower gel, he sent me off with samples of the Myrrhe and Cedre Sambac, Eau de Citron Noir, a cute little Eau des Merveilles mini/pendant, lotion and a smile on my face. If shopping was always such a delight, I’d need a second job!

The ME is nice, though not quite ringing my bells. It reminds me a bit of Rose ikebana in being a fruity bright & watery rose, but without the tartness of RI.

Today at the duty free shop in LAX i sampled some Bronze Goddess- seems to fit the theme . It is light & lovely and would have made a great layering combo with the body creme I purchased…… thinking now that I should have purchased it before boarding!! SOTD for the CP is Au Lac by Eau d’Italie, which I found after a serious search through two sample boxes. I can’t say I love it, but I don’t hate it either. I read up on the love story that supposedly inspired it and must say, this somewhat wimpy watery scent doesn’t pack the romantic wallop that it should! –Between romantic floral and Futurist avant-garde. Huh? Where’s the Futurism here? I’m another person who’s not really on board with aquatic scents, I’m afraid.

It often feels there’s more time spent on the backstory and presentation as opposed to creating the perfiume itself. I am now madly curious as to what notes might make a perfume futuristic. Anyone have candidates?

Wearing Antonia’s Flowers Sogni del Mare – easily the only perfume (sample, not even a decant!) in my collection that fits today’s CP. Actually, I wouldn’t mind wearing this perfume but unfortunately two samples I got from the brand directly smell completely different (much better) than what I tried at Barneys, so I’m hesitant to buy it at either place.

I’ve been MIA here for a few days because I had a friend visiting. And what a goof, I didn’t take Friday off work like I should have! I came in on Monday and now today. My friend left late last night. I’m so sleepy and not ready to work much yet.

While my friend visited I wore Calvin Klein Reveal (thanks madtowngirl!), Hermes Neroli Dore, and Tom Ford Soleil Blanc.

My chosen scent to evoke the sea is Oriza L. Legrand Villa Lympia. I quite enjoy it and its seaweed, driftwood, and salt notes. I wore it the whole weekend we spent on a nearby island last spring, and it fit well. Jessica reviewed it on NST too. I’m happy to have bought a decant in a split but probably won’t replace it when it’s gone.

Happy Friday everyone! I just put on some Missoni Acqua and feeling very ’90s. It reminds me of Byblos. I had a lot of aquatics in the ’90s – CK Escape, New West, Byblos, Sunflowers (least appropriate name ever), all the B&BW aquatic ones (juniper something and other one I can’t remember). Anyway, nice trip down memory lane and I’m already kinda tired of it.

    SotA = Eau des Merveilles
    SotE = L’eau de L’Artisan

St. Monans Pier, wow, I would love to walk there someday.

Still enjoying Terracotta. The top notes are dazzling. It evokes a delicious tropical scene, water sparkles in the distance.

Couldn’t resist EdM today. It makes me think of a long, quiet walk along the seashore.

L’eau de L’Artisan, a cologne with a hint of saltwater to refresh at the end of a long day.

SOTD = Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt

I’m on theme today! WS&SS is linear but very good!

Clients rule, enough to derail a very significant project, which, at the proverbial end of the day, stood no chance given the significance of the client. I was hoping to be done with my portion of this project and now it will drag on.

    Commuting Woes No. 440
    – why anyone would deliberately lean on my hand (that is holding on to a train pole) is beyond me – it was not even that crowded! I am looking for some type of ring or brass knuckle-like jewelry that will make it painful for people to lean against my hand (with any part of their body) with the only caveat being that it can’t look like a weapon. Any suggestions?

Wearing LADDM this morning, and feeling very smug because my pet idea looks like it might be solving a problem on a project that’s been going on for longer than I’ve been at the company! I’m so thrilled I pushed this idea so hard (seriously, I brought it up like six times before my manager said, “Fine, let’s try it out,” likely as much to shut me up as out of genuine enthusiasm).

The boyfriend and I are making canneles! I haven’t found a satisfactory one in California so far, so a close friend gave me four gorgeous copper cannele molds for my birthday last year. Since my new birthday is just weeks away, I thought it high time to actually use those molds. We made vanilla-steeped milk on Wednesday and the most fabulous-smelling strained batter yesterday. Scraping those vanilla beans filled the kitchen with the most glorious boozy vanilla smells! The canneles may end in disaster, or they may be fabulous! I’ll let you know next week (the batter needs to rest for 48 h).

It’ll only last a short while anyway… I sprayed it on my shirt to keep it going…. just a sharp, herbal citrus.

I’m with LizzieB today… I got nuthin’ for Aquatic/Ocean Day. I once had a sample of Matin d’Orage that I liked, but I used it up. I do still have a sample of DSH Beach Roses, but that’s only faintly salty anyway.

So I’m testing PdE Le Cri de la Lumiere today. Which is nice. I was expecting the “rose iris” described in the newest P:TG, but I was surprised. A liqueur-like rose, a bit of powdery musk (no, it’s pleasant, fear not the laundromat), some iris, and a metric ton of patchouli. Maybe a tad of oud (or fake oud, not sure I can tell the difference, but there’s that hint of band-aid stuff so I think some type of oud material). Reminds me a little bit of MFK Lumiere Noire pf with iris in place of narcissus, so I’d probably wear this if I had some.

I’m still *sensitive* to patchouli, so I tend to notice it more than other people seem to, but as it turns out, I like it paired with rose.

I liked Matin d’Orage too despite the sneaky aquatic note. This is not my favourite type of perfume either, and in fact the adjective “calonic” will make me put the bottle down even before spritzing. Wearing Elixer des Merveilles today thinking some of its siblings were in the right category at least…

I’ve been testing the new PdE too especially now that LT has given it high praise. There’s something in it I can’t smell. The first time I wore it it disappeared: I forgot all about it! The next time I practically poured it on (from the sample vial). It’s definitely luminous. I get the rose. Again, I can tell I’m missing something though. I have to admit the third time I wore it I became very irritated by it after a few hours.

Having said that, PdE is a brand I admire. If the perfumes came in travel sizes and a package of them appeared at my house I would wear almost all of them.

Yesterday’s SOTD was Malibu Lemon Blossom, following Chocolate Marzipan’s suggestion.

Today’s is a cheap and cheerful from Old Navy called Sea Salt and Fig.

Went with Eau de Rochas this morning. (Eau is aquatic, right?)

Dear Rochas: Please make this in a convenient half-gallon refrigerator size with Windex-type sprayer.

    And bring back (unadulterated) Byzance!

    TGIF!

I’ve been *this close* to buying Eau de Rochas so many times. Brief description? And does it have spices or oakmoss?

Okay, I’ll try — with caveats that I only have a dabber sample of the current formulation and no memory of what the scent was like in its early years — I smell lime, bergamot, verbena and coriander up top, and as it dries down a light, chypre-ish element comes out, which must be the moss and patchouli, along with vetiver. To me, it hints at spicy without being overtly so, and the florals are only barely present to my nose. It is light and refreshing but more interesting than a straight citrus because of the chypre aspect. Spraying lavishly would be fun – hence my request for a half gallon size!

I wasn’t really in the mood for ANY perfume today and I have no outright aquatics-thought about Dune or Eau de Magnolia for its salt spray note or something with a heavy ambergris presence. Dabbed some Durga on my thumb since the melon note smells like calone (autocorrect wants “calzone” ????) and it’s still there and is a bit nauseating.
Settled on a small spritz of Derek Lam Silent St which has a watery, cool cucumber note amidst the white musk and is more indoor pool party than ocean.

I’ve been on a run of Aliage, one of my favorite summer scents, to suit a current heat wave. (Might have picked Ecume de Rose if I’d checked the day’s theme first – but maybe not, as Aliage’s galbanum really cools me in spirit).

I never had problems with aquatics back in the day when people were wearing them, so I am fine with them, unlike quite a few people. Today I am wearing Shay & Blue Almond Cucumber. It does have a good amount of cucumber, but does not have that melon and cucumber kind of air about it.

I did not have a problem with them then either! I took on a dislike to melon much later. Now I’ve circled around again — I like *some* of them.

Nice photo Robin. La pluie for a frosty Saturday morning. This is the only Miller Harris I have tried (blind buy) and I like it a lot as it evokes a sense of ‘stillness’ , so it is a good scent when quiet focus is required. Reading Annie Ernaux’s The Years and enjoying it.

My sample pack for SP Parfums came in today so I am not participating. Instead, I am wearing Sunmilkflowers which I quite like. I will have to test further.
I was planning to wear Aqua di Parma, Aqua Iris Noble. It was an accidental purchase from evil bay. I thought I was buying the EDT. I don’t hate it but normally only wear it as a sleep scent.

        Sunmilk Flowers
        Violet Moss
        Lignum Vitae Forte
        Pink Patchouli
        Fund air
        Suntanglam
        Civitte Intense
Unfortunately, it does not include Poweder & Dust. I may just blind buy it in the travel size.

I already did a quick dab of the entire coffret. They are all nice with the exception of Civette Intense. That one smells like a barn yard and is not my thing at all. I had to scrub it fast! My favorite so far is Sunmilkflowers Flowers, a pretty sappy green yet lightly sweet floral. Not sure if I need it though. I haven’t found P & D in the US.

I might briefly join the use-it-up brigade, and use the last of my sample of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, it’s definitely on my buy list.

That picture is lovely. The colors are gorgeous. …Does it strike anyone else as freezing cold, though, or is it just me?

Friday the 13 and Han Solo’s and Captain Picard’s birthdays!? That makes for an interesting day, no?

I’m in Pacifica Malibu Lemon Blossom for today’s project. I really lucked out with the “or something meant to evoke the sea” portion of the challenge, since I pretty much hate aquatic scents.???????? I remember an early description of MLB by Brooke was that it was meant to capture the scent of surfacing from the waves while surfing in Malibu. (Now the website just says, “This fresh scent captures the free spirit of the Pacific Ocean with lemon blossom, litsea cubeba, flowering angel’s trumpet, fresh herbs and salty sea breezes.”)

Looking forward to reading what everyone else is wafting today….

    Have a great weekend, all!

The temperature here is the exact opposite. It’s my day off so we went to run errands; it was about 85 degrees (30 ish celcius) when we left this morning. I splashed on loads of Florida Water before heading out.

The closest to the water I will be is on my deck with the misters going full blast. Stay cool everyone!

Ironically for Aquatic Friday I’m under a boil-water advisory due to a pump failure. Sigh. Probably going to switch to beer soon! 🙂

I’m wearing a sample of Bel Respiro EDP. I used up an 8 ml decant of the EDT in one spring a few years ago and I’ve been missing it. The EDP is not quite the same, but close. Very nice.

THIS is my category. I recently learned the difference between aquatic and marine. Aquatic is watery and marine is oceany. Ozonic is airy. Now I Know! Here’s my list with the first being the ultimate:
    Bulgari Aqua
    Michael Kors Island
    Biotherm Eau Oceane
Gwen Stefani G of the Sea
    Giorgio Beverly Hills Ocean Dream
    Rochas Fleur D’Eau
    Cacharel Eau d’Eden
    Lancôme O Oui!
    DSquared Ocean Wet Wood
