Monday scent of the day 6/25

Posted by Robin on 25 June 2018 245 Comments

Boom, it's Monday again. It’s also Global Beatles Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in a quick spritz of Aedes de Venustas Copal Azur, which made Erin's Top 10 of Summer this year.

Reminder: 6/29 will be Opposite Day...wear the opposite of what would be expected. Suggested by Pyramus, who provided a bunch of examples: La Nuit on a bright sunshiny day, Matin Calin in the afternoon, Voile d’Ete in the depth of winter or Winter Delice in the middle of July, Aromatics In White when you’re dressed all in black.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I have not smelled it – I do not think it is available in the US yet. Monsegnior Guerlain did a review – it does not sound like something very unique.

Good morning! I’m going to try to opposite all week… spent last night with my hair gunked up with Lush henna mud in hopes of turning it black, so I’m wearing White Shoulders. I feel I deserve extra points because I’m pretty sure my shoulders turned greenish as part of the process.

I did! It is not that deeply colorizing so I wanted to get the most out of it. Also that’s the only way I can be patient enough to leave it on the whole 4 hours

    World Beatles Day!
My sister and I saw the lads from Liverpool August 1964 @ the convention center in Atlantic City.
Still have my ticket stub and programme. They are framed and hung in my home office.
Today a sample of Chanel Paris Biarritz post shower. Mmmmmmmmm

Robin, we were pretty close up and amazingly we could hear them. The speakers were so tiny!
And Dusty Springfield opened for them.
They had on their collarless suits.
It was my dads 40th birthday. That means it’s been 54 years this summer since that day.

In Masque Milano Romanza for a gorgeous sunny, breezy day. Such a beautiful animalic narcissus. I just finished my large decant and have no intention to replace it anytime soon, even though I enjoyed it greatly.

Every scent I’ve tried with narcissus has made me pause and “double-take.” I think the only one I’ve acquired was SSS Nostalgie, which in the first formulation it added jolie-laide quality to the top notes (sharp narcissus with luscious roses hot on its tails).

It’s a fascinating note, in any case, and I’m sure you smell lovely! (And +1 point for draining a decant.)

I really like narcissus and so far I have enjoyed most of the perfumes I have tried with that note. The opening of Romanza might make you pause for sure. It is so weird that at the beginning I did not know what to think about. But it is a beautiful perfume.
I am so glad the decant is over. It is a relief to get rid of samples and decants. I will take this week to finish at least 5 of them.

Btw, I was not prepared for this weeks community project….

So I think I am doing it wrong
Its sunny and this earthy, green and slightly herbal scent is perfect for warmer days.
And I am wearing an almost all black outfit…a match for the colour of liquorice sweets….cant think of something opposite.

But but…I also wear a black blouse with red polkadots, v-neck and puffed sleeves…this calls for a more dramatic scent right? 😉

I started out with Paloma Picasso on my right wrist, and Sugandhco Musk Amber, an attar from India that was recently reviewed by Persolaise, on my left for comparison. Scrubbed those off. I guess I’m participating in the sense that I wore something opposite from what I enjoy 😉

Now I’m wearing Yves Rocher Voile d’Ambre, and it’s lovely, for whatever reason Amber scents remind me of make-up too, which I really like.

I appreciate it. It reminds me of burning rubber & motor oil, with a feminine twist. When I smelled Musk Amber, it kind of reminded me of PP, so I wanted to compare them. BTW, if you love PP, but find it too subtle, let me know I can get you Musk Amber 🙂

Paloma Picasso is very hard to wear imo. The original formulation was gorgeous and very intriguing but still, one spray was enough. I always felt it wore me, rather than I was wearing it.

It did pretty well, even through a weight circuit at the gym. Oddly, though, it gets cuddly in the heat.

Post shower, I went with Ubar, a sample of which one of you fabulous people sent me (though I can”t remember who). Whoa. That’s a powerhouse.

Chanel No 19 EDT for my first day in a new office and location (same job, we just moved our HQ). Need something reliable and grounding in the face of change and possible chaos, and No 19 fits the bill perfectly. We’re going to a very open office environment and are occupying a floor and a half where we’ll be spread out over a lot of square footage. This after coming from 3.5 very compact and poorly designed office floor plan. Excited but a little nervous for the change!

Wearing Ellie Saab Essence No 1 Rose as it was the only one I have yet unpacked that appealed at all.
Spent the weekend unpacking and hanging art as I couldn’t deal with the industrial taupe walls for one more minute. The apartment is coming together, but my Galgo is having difficulty in dealing with the increased foot traffic. He alternates between being scared and barking. Extra cookies will help.

There was a story arc on ER involving one of the doctors trying to adopt her sister’s baby, who had been abandoned. Blackbird played a role in it, and when the episode ended and it played again, both my mom and I were sobbing inconsolably.

Great song, great show. It made me cry so many times. Why did I keep watching?

My only scent right now is carryover from last night’s lovely combination–Bronze Goddess body butter with several spritzes of Le Labo Lys 41. I smelled amazing as I got ready for bed!

Today is scheduled to be a gym day, but I’m tempted to delay it. I have a flat of berries in the fridge that I’d like to play with–blueberry walnut conserve, raspberry sauce, and strawberry syrup calling my name. . .

My boss is back from a 3 week vacation so that means she’s going to want to change EVERYTHING tonight. Ugh… sotd is Mugler Aura. This really is one of those ” the more I wear it the more I like it” perfumes. I saw that they are coming out with an edt version. I love the bottle, but the scent smells more magenta to me, than green.

We’re now situated at the company apartment (with my husband’s supervisor and another guy I’ve yet to meet) until our apartment is ready to move into (which won’t be until the weekend.) My perfumes will be sitting in our moving truck until then.

So, not sure I’ll be able to participate this week. Today is Bois des Iles edt. And I realize that I’d forgotten to share my story of triumph:

I’ve had BdI edt as an ebay saved search for about a year, waiting for a reasonably priced bottle to come up. I’ve actually only seen a handful of bottles come up in that time (I guess people are hanging on to what they have…) and when they did, people were asking (a lot) more than I wanted to pay. Until about 2 months ago. Someone put a 60% full 6.8 oz bottle up for auction. No one was bidding on it, as the seller had virtually no feedback, but I figured I’d take my chances. I was the only bidder and won the bottle for $99. Yup, $99.

Sotd is Noa thanks to the very kind ElisaP. I could swear I get a bit of nutty-ness in the opening, but there aren’t any nuts listed in the notes, so it must be the coffee bean.

I went out kayaking yesterday afternoon and spotted two- what I would call young adult- otters. Omg they are so cute. I could have gotten right up next to them, but I stayed a safe distance away. I know that looks can be deceiving!

Noa…what a beautiful scent…I think I have drained upwards of five full bottles in my perfume wearing lifetime…I always found it to be a very versatile and office friendly scent but not dull and somewhat different from mainstream….you smell really good…plus the bottle is so adorable with the “pearl” floating in the juice.

Aw, I think everyone can and should go to the opera. I was really excited to see Porgy and Bess in Seattle this August. Most performing arts organizations really want to bring new patrons in and offer discounts – especially for those under 30 or 40.

        That was said tongue-in-cheek.
My brother is an opera singer.
My mother used to be on the board for a musical theater company.
I am very familiar with the inner workings of such communities. And while I agree that there are efforts to bring in new blood, I think they have a long way to go before they have significantly changed thier audience. And honestly, I’m not sure I’m entirely in favor of some of those changes. I could go without ever seeing another performance with a video monitor on the stage.

SotD = Eau des Merveilles Lait Parfumé pour le Corps

A while back I tidied up a few cupboards and realized I have more scented lotion than I know what to do with. I don’t intend to collect them, they seem to follow me home.

On my hands I use my favorite Lavender hand & body lotion from Trader Joe’s. I carry a small bottle in my purse. When I use it out and about I am often asked what smells so good. It’s subtle and fades quickly, which I appreciate as I don’t like strongly scented products on my hands.

That’s the long explanation for the EdM body lotion on my arms today. It smells very true to the spray perfume. I don’t often reach for lotions, but I should make a habit of using them for the fragrance.

That’s my contrariwise contribution for today. Have a marvelous Monday, NST.

Wasn’t sure what to think about a few Tauers I have. But at least she is playing around and trying things. I sent her home with lots of samples and decants lol. SOTD = Prada Infusion de Mandarine

Nice! I have a Nordstrom sample. The SA filled it 1/3 full and I used half of that. The Mandarine hung on for about 2 hours and then it’s now the opoponax taking center stage. IIRC, opoponax smells like iris so I am a happy camper. A FB will be joining my collection in July.

Speaking of FB, I was swayed by all the discount codes and It ended up being an expensive weekend ????. And I will keep you in suspense. Mwahahahaha!

I may have mentioned that the Mugler rep at Nordstrom did not come through with the Aura mini I was supposed to get. Well, she did come through and I now have the mini! I will swap it for a donation to a suicide prevention / mental health not-for-profit organization. It’s for a good cause so I have a number in mind for what it’s worth (and it’s higher than what it’s going for on the auction site). If you would like to be in the running for this, please send me an email.

There IS something about the Infusions de Prada line. Since the mandarins didn’t last too long, I think layering it with a wee bit of Azemour or Orange Sanguine may be in order.

Prada No.8 Opopanax was the one that got away. I was already at the Prada boutique with Daisy Bow and I demurred from buying, thinking I can always go back and buy it. Too late!

I have never tried Memo Manoa! I looked at the notes and it sounds really good. One of the commenters mentioned it is kind of skanky. True?

I’m thinking of offering a split of the Hermessences. It really is the easiest one to split!

I went to the mixing bar last year and had the same reaction. They would not give me a little bit of the cream (unscented) to try to see if it agrees with my skin…well, a pox of them because my $$$s went to the Diana Vreeland body cream instead (so luxurious!)

Robin, you smell amazing!!! I have a travel spray of that one from the ever kind flopper and I can never decide whether to spray it with abandon because it’s so great or whether to hoard it because I am not interested in paying AdV prices for a FB. (I know what the average NSTer’s advice would be.)

My scent is nothing at all unexpected–I’m in AG Vetiver, which is totally what one might expect for a summer’s day. I considered putting on 5 O’Clock au Gingembre because it was 7am and because it’s a much heavier scent than I might expect for the summer, but the Vetiver just kind of floated up into my hand.

Meant to add that I tried les Annees 25 from Tauer over the weekend–YEESH. It didn’t smell very strong at first, so I gave myself three sprays, and then it went nuclear and I immediately felt very sick. It’s possible I’d like it in smaller quantities, but it’s equally possible that it just has too much powder for me.

I’m wearing le labo’s musc 25 today, as part of my le labo week. It’s not an opposite at all – it fits me perfectly, which is why I shelled out the city exclusive price for a bottle. But I don’t use it as often as I would like because of the cost, so maybe using it today was opposite my normal “save it for later” behavior?

Through the dark I can see snow outside , the hills are white but my garden is just wet. I am in the woods with Tacit and Bracken for the moment but will head towards mitsouko or shalimar later. I have been reading an interesting book about Zola’s exile to England following the Dreyfus case, eating pea soup, and watching Atlanta in the evenings.

I’m wearing Bulgari au Thé Rouge today.

So I was killing time before an eye doctor appointment in an adjacent Marshall’s the other day, and they had a few of the Tea series (Red, Blue and Black). I am curious about the Thé Noir but haven’t smelled it, and it doesn’t seem to be as widely available in stores as the others.

Has anyone tried it? If so, what was your impression of it?

I spotted Thé Rouge at my local Marshall’s over the weekend. I’ve been curious about it for a long time (I’ve only tried Thé Vert), but couldn’t bring myself to blind buy a FB. What do you think about it?

I really like Thé Rouge. It extends the original idea with fig and walnut, and while I don’t know that I make out the fig distinctly, it does have a little bit of a nutty note. I haven’t smelled Thé Vert in a long time, but Rouge is sweeter than I remember Vert being, though I wouldn’t say it’s overly sweet.

I will also say that Rouge is the only one of the Tea series that I’ve liked enough to buy (so far.. unless I decide to buy Thé Noir)

I revisted Thé Bleu since Marshall’s had it in 40ml, but I still don’t like it enough to feel like I need to own any.

It is a very pretty scent. A candy violet that gets saved from being too lavender tarlatan tutu by the leather. And it has definite powder. It is warm out, and I applied with a bit too heavy a hand this morning. 5 hours later it is going strong but has settled down to a good projection.

Marilyn Monroe and Caron Nuit de Noel: scroll down to the two color photos of Marilyn reading, and look for the classic Caron Nuit de Noël etui on the right side of the top shelf of her credenza.

    http://amandaatkins.blogspot.com/2011/03/marilyn-reading-in-bedrooms-and.html

(I am not affiliated with the linked blog; I found it when I was searching for a linkable version of the photo. I originally noticed the Nuit de Noël in a larger Getty photo in Vanity Fair.)

BTW, I’ve always assumed the box was modeled after an Art Deco era accessory, but its roots are apparently deeper than that, as seen in this Regency etui:

Hi, Kanuka! With respect to oud oils, let’s just say I am still trying to understand them.

Japanese kyara incense is quite a different experience, and much easier to like. Old sandalwood is easy to fall in love with. In particular, Ensar Oud’s Santal Sultan is amazing.

We’re continuing the renovations. With the the kitchen mostly done, we’ve started on the bathroom. It took only a few hours yesterday for the room to be completely stripped down to the wall frames, and this morning’s usual shower was replaced by a bowl of water and a flannel! In the middle of winter!!

I’ll wear 24 Faubourg to reintroduce some glamour – the perfume and the ruins of the bathroom are nice opposites 🙂 Also the weather, I think of 24 Faubourg as more a warm weather perfume, and it’s certainly not warm here today.

SOTD is Guerlain Cologne du Parfumeur.

The night-blooming cereus in my yard bloomed last night! It was a day later than the group at the local botanical gardens this year. There were 3 buds on it, and it appears that the one that didn’t open last night will bloom tonight. So fingers crossed, I’ll get another chance to sniff a lovely blossom. Here’s what they look like:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peniocereus_greggii

A story for you on Global Beatles Day: Once upon a time, baby Creosote lived in a part of Tucson where a Beatle also had a home. On a couple of occasions, Creosote was out with her parent at the grocery store, and this Beatle happened to be there too. One time he even had *his* young daughter with him. Creosote’s parent, despite being a big fan, decided to let him go about his business—even when some other people approached him for autographs. And so, Creosote was *thiiiis* close to having the opportunity to learn to play guitar left-handed and the chance to be friends with a famous fashion designer. But didn’t. The End.

And how unlucky to miss your chance at greatness! ????

(TBH, I would have reacted the same way as your parent — but a kid’s perspective is different and what an amazing thing it would have been for you to meet said Beatle and daughter…)

Wearing just some Bain de Soleil, inspired by yesterdays comments. I showered right after work as I will have my usual early morning tomorrow. I don’t normally shower at night since my hair takes forever to dry and if it’s even slightly wet it can be crazy in the morning after sleeping on it. Last night we had pretty good thunderstorm blow through with alot of trees and branches down all around the city. So, not much sleep yesterday.

All that to say tomorrow is my Mother-in-law’s birthday tomorrow (a big one). So I have to be all packed for after work so we can bolt up to the party location about 45 minutes away. We will be the last to arrive due to work commitments, and my hubby has been asked to do the bbqing. The party was thrown together at the last minute due to a few of her sisters flying in from another province (and expecting said party). The birthday girl didn’t even want any festivities. It should be interesting!
