Friday scent of the day 6/1

Posted by Robin on 1 June 2018 271 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! Welcome to June. And it's Friday, and it's World Milk Day. Our community project for today: in honor of World Milk Day (and the start of Dairy Month), wear something milky or creamy.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Me: Demeter Egg Nog. Out of season, but still delicious.

Reminder: on 6/8, wear one of your "top 10 of summer" fragrances (unless it's winter where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of winter" scents).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: you can find White Rabbit Creamy Candy at Amazon, about $18 for six packages.

        YUP 🙂

I have had a lot of success with this brand. Greylocke is one of the few vetiver fragrances that I actually really, really like and every time I wear it I get loads of compliments.

    Rabbit, rabbit,rabbit!
Wearing Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess. I could not find anything creamier for the CP that fits the rainy, warm, muggy, uncomfortable day we are having here. Love BG and it is a big summer favorite.
    Be well everyone!

I will probably be busy during the Freebiemeet tomorrow, so I wanted to offer one pre-freebiemeet-freebie (US-only):

One unboxed 7ml rollerball of Elizabeth and James Nirvana White, used only once.

If you’re interested, email me at shelp216 in the land of gmail. If anyone has any samples/minis they’d like to swap for this, that could be fun too!

SOTD is L’Artisan Poivre Piquant. L’Artisan website just mentions ‘creamy notes’, but some sources (like Fragrantica) list milk, and the opening is quite milky to me. A very cosy, comforting scent and surprisingly light and gentle for a perfume built on pepper. A scent for relaxing and recharging.

I love the first hour of Poivre Piquant – it’s both milky and peppery at the same time, which sounds awful, but is quite the opposite. At some point there is a note that comes to the fore (I’m not sure what it is) – and stays for quite some time – that starts to disagree with me. Thus, I’ve never gotten completely through my little 15 ml coffret bottle. Of the spice trio (PP, Safran Troublant and Piment Brulant) I like Safran Troublant the best, but I appreciate some qualities of all three. Seems like these have the intriguing nature of many LAP perfumes I tried early on in my sniffing journey.

Yes, milk and pepper go surprisingly well together in PP. Never thought I could like this combo.
I have only recently tried the whole trio and have worn each once so far. This means that my impressions may change, but so far I liked Safran Troublant and Poivre Piquant, while Piment Brulant disappointed me. What pleasantly surprised me in ST and PP was how soft and creamy they are. I expected super spicy and dry orientals, and they turned out to be something very different.

Milk of Flowers for me today and just waiting for my best friend and her daughter to show up soon so we can bake my wedding cake. We made this recipe for a friend’s wedding about 20 years ago–3 tiers, with each tier being 3layers of chocolate flecked cake, filled with chocolate raspberry mousse buttercream, covered in white chocolate ganache and white chocolate buttercream. Contains over 5lbs of chocolate all told

Gucci “Guilty Absolute” – not remotely creamy. Sprayed it on for another cool cloudy day and instead it’s turned into a sunny scorcher.

For reasons I won’t go into here (else Robin will tar and feather me), I recommend US NST folk either:
    (i) stock up on European perfumes before they become unaffordable, or
(ii) stop buying perfumes altogether and keep your money for when other luxuries like food and shelter become unaffordable.

What fun it all is! Still no new contract, so I will go outside and enjoy the sun. Another month off work and things will be serious.

With our rubbish exchange rate (Nz$1 is 59 cents euro, US 69 cents) plus crazy shipping ( usually $50) perfume from most countries is unaffordable but we have learned to be stoic and battle on. I hope your job situation perks up soon. I’m sure it will.

Happy Friday everyone! I’m off to get my overdue haircut in a few hours; just can’t wait. I almost took the scissors to it, so I know it’s time.

I may just go with something simple like YR Noix de Coco edt and Exotic Coconut lotion or a few sprays of Bronze Goddess. I know this sounds counterintuitive, but my hair stylist doesn’t like a lot of perfume on people. Maybe all the chemicals did some damage to her olfactory system or something. I will try and keep it light today for her as she is AMAZING and knows exactly how to cut my unruly hair.

I’ve trimmed my hair before a cut in the past, and somehow they always know! Since I’ve found her, I try to be strong as she understands thick, crazy hair like mine.

I will be curious to know what you think of it. The bottle that appeared at my house for mother’s day was confiscated by my husband (who NEVER EVER EVER wears fragrance). It smells beyond amazing on him. In his youth he worked for a farmer bailing hay and he says it reminds him of that time period. He doesn’t like chemical smells and synthetic perfumes and says that First Cut smells “natural” to him. And it lasts FOREVER on him.

I looked through my collection of samples and as far as I have, the only thing I have on hand that anyone would describe as “creamy/milky” is Philosykos, so I went with that. It really is a great fig scent, and it fits the summery weather today quite well.

I didn’t wear a milky scent as it’s suddenly so warm in Vancouver. My plans have been dashed. I might go get ice cream later 😀

I’ve used up all my Goldfield and Banks samples as room scents this morning (Wood Infusion, Blue Cypress, White Sandalwood, Desertwood Rose) and what molecules that landed on me is my SOTD. There should be a bit of milkiness in Australian sandalwood used in their scents although it’s hard to detect as most of the perfume notes are being suffocated and drowned by obnoxious loud woody amber aromachemicals. Is this the trend moving forward?

Yes, I’m afraid it is. With all the IFRA ingredient restrictions, it seems they are loading things up with loud woody amber aromachemicals. Not a positive trend.

Hmm… There are a lot of perfumes I can’t wear because they have a massively huge and overwhelming fresh-cut wood note that smothers everything else out. I wonder if we are experiencing the same thing?

Like nearly everyone here I don’t have anything super-creamy (CSP Matin Calin would do the job but it’s long discontinued, I think, and I don’t have any anyway), so I wore Bulgari Omnia, which has a sort of creamy voluptuousness about it. Must be that white-chocolate note they say is in there, along with the plush sandalwood.

I just got back from the gym, and on the walk there and the walk back I buried my nose repeatedly in big handfuls of lilacs, which right here right now are in full bloom: the smell is intoxicating. It is just one of the most beautiful scents on Earth, right up there with kittens and freshly baked bread.

I’ve been doing that for the past two weeks, I looove lilacs. Ours are nearly finished here in Montreal, but I’ve been obsessively smelling every bush I’ve passed by.

I live in Moncton, which is a bit cooler so things bloom a bit later: a few years ago I was in Montréal just as the lilacs were erupting, and then got back home in time to have them bloom all over again, which was bliss. I can’t walk past a lilac bush without grabbing a bunch and inhaling deeply. It’s one of life’s purest pleasures.

    SotD is Vetiver Blanc
A has a bit of a tropical vibe that matches our almost tropical weather.

It was so warm and very humid last night, I slept uncomfortably. But its raining now and its slowly cooling down to 19/20 degrees Celsius (68F).
I hate to see the sunshine and warm temps go, but its okay if the rain chases away some of the humidity.

If the day had started out cooler Id have worn Under my skin to match this week’s theme, it is slightly milky/creamy but its not foody. Its a very interesting scent as well!

And yay, its almost weekend here…4:20 PM…let the countdown begin 😀

But instead I am in Guerlain Charnel Elixir Floral Romantique, which despite being roundly panned for being overpriced for a boring floral, I love. I’m not sorry.

Tioga Pass just opened up about 10 days ago; we were waiting for that, since that’s our preferred part of the park.

We hiked to Wapama Falls & back at Hetch Hetchy on a pretty hot day (low 80s); that’s about 5 miles, a flat-ish but rocky path. We made lots of stops for photos. The falls are rockin! And the paths were covered in butterflies, amazing.

The next day we hiked from Tioga Pass out to North Dome and back, which was about 9 miles. Significantly harder in spots than the trail guides claim. Excellent views of Half Dome and Yosemite Valley.

The third day we just walked around Yosemite Valley in our sandals, we were toast by then 🙂

I should have given you the times… Wapama Falls hike was about 3 hours with lots of photo stops. The trail continues on past the falls so you can lengthen it as you like.

North Dome was 6 hours, kinda pushing the whole way since thunderstorms were threatening. Most of the trail is not hard — wooded pathways — but the sections across the granite domes were something in spots!

That Eggnog sounds yummy! I just realized I had the perfect scent for this week, but it is at the office and I am working at home today – Roca Nuvol Llimona (Lemon Cloud). It is a sweet creamy lemon. Guess I’ll just wear CSP Matin Calin again!

    1) SOTD: Almond Milk& Honey Body butter and Fresh Cream. I smell very, very cosy indeed- which is welcomed, as I woke up feeling chilled from the rain we had last night. I smell like the very best warm milk drink.

    2) Thanks to youse guys for the bank v CU advice! I really do appreciated hearing from people who have a range of experiences. What I have decided to do is to with one of largest of the CUs, OnPoint. They have really good financial products, are sound AND are open on Saturday(!) Plus you don’t need to be a Daddy Warbucks to have a money market/mmIRA, which is nice. I open my new account tomorrow, and should switch over completely by the middle of the month.,

I know I said I wouldn’t be participating in today’s CP because I would be busy drowning in SSS, buuuuut I also ordered a bottle of l’Aromatica Kulfi from Tigerlily at their 15 % off Memorial Day sale, because I am a dreadful and acquisitive person, and because the sample I got from Tigerlily last year AND the sample a nice NSTer sent me just kept tempting me instead of sating my desire for it. So. Now I smell like creamy, creamy Indian dessert. Talk about a cardamom bomb! It’s even cardamomier than Cardamom Coffee. And so much saffron. And cream. Mmmmmmmmm.

In other news, my right thumb stopped working last night. Is this what it means to be in your 30s? That vital body parts just arbitrarily stop working? How long will my thumb continue to not work? Has this ever happened to any of you?

Your SOTD sounds wonderful! And it’s going to be a bummer to hear this, but body parts shouldn’t just up and quit working in one’s 30’s. You might be dealing with something like carpal tunnel.

My right thumb stopped working when I was 26 – I was in grad school, and running so many PCR reactions each day that the motion of depressing the plunger of the pipette eventually made my thumb sieze up. I imagine your injury is similar.

It took about 4 days of resting my right hand to get it to revive – in that time, I took 1 day off and then spent 3 days doing everything left-handed. Once I was able to use my right thumb again, I very consciously switched back and forth.

(I’m now 42 and my thumbs are perfectly fine. My ankles? Another story. But my thumbs are fine.)

White Rabbit Candy! A blast from the past!

SOTD = Mugler Angel Muse + Philosophy Fresh Cream

I smell fragrantly delicious without gassing anyone out. Nutty fragrances tend to smell creamy to me.

Looking forward to reading everyone’s picks!

    Commuting Woes No. 431:

    hajusuuri’s pet peeves:
    – people so addicted to their phones that they cannot stop using while exiting a train, walking up/down stairs and/or ramps. If you bump into someone while doing so, it’s your fault so you have no right to be annoyed.

    – drivers who do not use turn signals

    – Where I park, 2 left turn lanes turn into 1 left turn lane and 2 right turn lanes. Quite often, cars would go to the right turn only lanes to either make a left or cut off a car on the left turn only lane to make a left. They think that gesturing with their arm gives them the excuse for behaving badly

I’ve swopped the freezing south for the wet north ( Tauranga ) for an arts festival where I am on a panel this weekend with a New Zealand perfumer and we are talking about our shared creative process ( writing and perfume making ) , getting inspiration from landscape/ nature …so I’m a bit nervous but as long as my brian doesn’t freeze ( or get a migraine and lose the power of speech ) it will be ok. Today I’m running a writing workshop trying to encourage participants to think beyond the ‘visual’ in their fiction…e.g thinking about how sound, smell, touch etc. can add depth, texture, atmosphere blah blah . The main thing is really just to encourage and motivate emerging writers to keep creating. Thinking about the state of publishing here is such a downer I won’t mention that part of the process! Wearing Coromadel as I am not too far from the Coromandel Peninsula.

I’m fascinated by this double-barrelled panel and look forward to hearing how it went. Also I’m going to look up those places on the map. I was teaching environmental aesthetics last semester and an early assignment was for the students to describe an aesthetic experience of nature, and then we went back over them and re-described them after reading articles, some of which also emphasised the other sensory dimensions beyond sight. It was a great experience and I was impressed by the range of responses I got. (I don’t teach writing, so it would’ve been good to have an actual writer there with us!)

I would love to learn more about environmental aesthetics and the idea of nature being appreciated on its own terms. This is where the idea of scent mapping my neighbourhood really originated. The panel is tomorrow and I hope the chair ‘gets’ it…will make a big difference.

SOTD is Havanna Vanille and it’s awfully pleasant. I went very light because it can be overwhelming and I had a lengthy appointment for a bone scan (the kind where they inject dye into a vein then you have to wait two hours–I was able to go and eat lunch there). It didn’t hurt at all and was not like a big MRI scanner (for which I need Valium) and so I’m happy. Haven’t read others’ posts yet but will now. Clever Robin to find something featuring both a rabbit and something milky!

I’m also feeling grateful, NST is a wonderful place. 😀

Popping back in for a PSA…. zullily has alot of niche right now, including TF Fleure de Chine. Only mentioning because it seems alot of people were disappointed in it being discontinued, I’ve not smelled it myself. Also no affiliation.

Late to this…started a comment this morning and then never finished. But then, I’m not participating in the CP anyway, though it sounds lovely for a cool day like today here in Vancouver. I got my small bottle of Tauer Les Annees 25 yesterday, so that was a no-brainer, though not really milky or creamy, but still lovely.

In another ZOMG Smells sample today: Cheesecake Hunting Saddle. Very nice!☺️Soft sweet and creamy. It’s the first leather scent that actually smells like leather to me. Iv samples quite a few Cuirs trying to understand this note ???? and all others just smell like straight up smoke to me. Campfire, bbq pit, etc. even cuir de Ange just smelled like faint smoke. And to my nose leather has a very smooth cool faintly sweet/vegetal vibe. Maybe my sniffer is slightly off. Or my brain. Lol that’s a definite possibility. ☺️The longevity on this was amazing and the silage very understated. Might just have to get his one. Happy weekend all!

I love White Rabbit candy. Brings me back to my elementary school days when I was first introduced to this brand by my friend Susan, and Asian American, who’s dad would bring them home from Chinatown in nyc. Good memories. Great job, Robin, in connecting both rabbit and milky. 🙂
