Wednesday scent of the day 5/30

Posted by Robin on 30 May 2018 229 Comments

Hump Day! And a quick reminder that our next freebiemeet is coming up on Saturday. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: Burberry Brit Rhythm for Her.

Reminder: on 6/1, wear something milky or creamy in honor of World Milk Day (and the start of Dairy Month).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: image is model Adwoa Aboah for Burberry Spring/Summer 2018.

Robin, the link for Burberry Brit Rhythm for Her takes me here – https://nstperfume.com/2017/05/29/monday-scent-of-the-day-529/

I am wearing Legendary Fragrances Barista. While it does not really smell milky or have a creamy feel, it has a cappuccino note, so I think it still fits the project. :)

OOPS, thanks for letting me know! Should be fixed now.

Is it a fantastic coffee note? I don’t know the brand but do love coffee scents.

The coffee note here is lovely, but it is a sweet coffee, maybe even caramel-flavored, with light floral notes in the dry-down. Despite its sweetness it never gets syrupy or cloying on my skin.

Is that why the model is holding a coffee pot? I thought the ad was making a generic “Brit = tea” point, and was … confused.

No — I also thought the ad was making a generic point about something British. And I picked a Burberry ad because I was wearing a Burberry scent.

You had me frantically googling, and yes, I don’t see the body milk anywhere. I just recently blind bought a manufacturer’s sample of l’eau d’hiver off eBay and it is so lovely and easy to wear. I will definitely need at least a travel size when I’m done.
      You smell wonderful!

SOTD is Opardu. I got a perfume compliment from a friend at work first thing this morning. A great way to start the day.
I heard from Laurie Erickson of SSS yesterday. PSA…She mentioned that she has Incense Pure available if anyone is interested?

    Hi all!

First thing I woke to was a text from my energy provider saying today was likely to be a high usage day. Time to turn up that ac! Hopefully the rest of the city unplugs their devices regularly like I do. :)

For this hot day, I chose L’Air du Samsara. Fills my oriental craving without being too loud.

I’m wearing a tiny bit of CSP Vanille Abricot. This is turning into gourmand week.

Little story for people interested in medical oddities, relevant to this week’s poll: I had some kind of virus (I’ve decided it must have been a virus, because my husband “caught” it too) that made all liquids taste slightly creamy for a few weeks. It wasn’t unpleasant at all; in fact it made everything taste better. Water, seltzer, wine, you name it. But at first I thought I had a brain tumor or something.

P.S. Thank you to Sheri G for coming to my friend’s rescue with some CdB!!

I haven’t chosen a scent yet today. I really enjoyed the Xinu fragrances I tried yesterday, maybe I’ll go back for seconds today…

Unrelated, but what’s everybody’s system for storing and organizing perfume samples? My current system (keeping them in a large ziplock in a dresser drawer) is both ineffectual and inelegant ;)

I like to buy divided plastic containers (can be found at the Container Store) so I can organize them by family (e.g. roses, white florals, vintage samples, etc.)

My regular samples are stored in votive candle holders with my perfumes. My special ones that people have sent me are in plastic bags, housed in a vintage candy jar, on my perfume shelf. I don’t have a ton though.

I have something similar to this – the middle drawers are labeled with alphabet stickers to organize by house, and the outside drawers are for decants and minis. It is not tiny but I love it!

Well, I’ve created a perfume tray to choose from for June:

    AA Pamplelune
    AdV Signature
    AdV Iris Nazarena
    Impossible Iris
    Infusion d’Iris Absolue
    Fat Electrician
    Etro Shaal Nur
    Clementine California
    Vera Bradley Citrus Mimosa
    Amouage Ciel Woman
    Amouage Dia Woman

Many of these are samples or decants from recent meets that I need to try out. It seems like a lot, now that I’ve entered the list! Assembling a monthly perfume tray is one of my New Years resolutions. ????

I probably should do a samples month but I might end up with a scrubber disaster which means it would have to be samples I’ve already tried, liked/loved and may already have bought a FB. I have a plastic Q-tips container with an opening ~ 2.5” diameter that has used atomizer samples. Maybe I’ll just do one day a week…

Only 730 in the morning and already we are bustling around! Finally cooled off a bit during the night and is wonderfully brisk this morning. Not sure how long it will last but so grateful for Right Now!

Poor T-Rex woke up with the left side of her nose and lip all swollen and when I took a good look, I saw a few foxtails. It must have been from when she did a chin/nose plant the other day zooming after the ball. I saw 3 and got them out, but not sure if there are others already imbedded. Poor pooch was so good when I took the tweezers to her! I think I plucked a couple of hairs too????

SOTD is just a single spritz of SSS Bee’s Bliss which is perfect in every way! So happy I have what I do have from Laurie! Also, while be-bopping around yesterday I came across a cute shop and the owner makes her own perfumes. She has at least 12-18, categorized as Woody, Floral, and Citrus. I sampled Teakwood Cardamom and Tropical Teakwood, which were quite nice. She has about 8 citrus based scents and I will give those a whirl next time I’m there. Predicting I may pick up a bottle because they are sensibly priced and sized. It would be a good momento, so I tell myself! Happy Humpday to all!

Deva, I spent a decade at Disney ABC, and they neverrrrrrrr moved that quickly despite too many bad behaviors to recall.

I was there during a writers strike and the impact to everthing and everone supporting a production ripples out to drycleaners, caterers, drivers.

It is considered political — not because racism is being called out, because we do have some things we can take for granted even here, like ‘racism is bad’ for instance, but because of all the rest of the stuff surrounding what is going on with Roseanne Barr and the intersection with party politics in this country.

Otherwise we end up splitting hairs: it would be saying you can mention Sanofi’s response but not the president’s response. That just doesn’t work, too much micro-policing of speech.

So no biggie but let’s just not talk about it anymore!

And I wrote this long response to clarify, for everyone, not to call you out for anything Deva.

Keep an eye on those fox tails – many of my dog park friends have had fox tail encounters (not at the park itself), and they are costly. Our dog required 2 surgeries because they couldn’t find it the first time. Now we try to be more vigilant (note to self: check dog today!) and keep him in a shorter coat.

I have heard horror stories. When I first got here I saw a woman with 6 (!) dogs, all of them with mesh hoods on, so I asked her about it. She really educated me! I just got back from the vet, who said it looks more like a secondary infection, so that’s a relief. (The vet did tell me she’s had multiple dogs requiring surgical intervention this week, including a poor pup with one in his EYE!!). We’ll see how things go over the next couple of days. One of those hoods may be in our future.

She goes to Italy and France for the clothing and bags, and makes the jewelry and perfume herself. I’ll try to get more info next time I go. The name of the shopis Muguette René. Currently scentless right now since Zagorsk wore off. It’s been quite a morning. Even though my dog has a really good flea and tick collar, we had to pull a tick off of him. Ten minutes ago, I found a tick on my armpit that hadn’t embedded itself on me. I think I might go with LADDM today.

Is it a Saresto collar? I have one on my dog and it’s very effective. It doesn’t prevent attachment, but soon after attachment the tick falls off and will die. I try to check her before I get back in the van, but I still found one in its death throes drunkenly weaving around the van seat. The attachment time is quite limited so transmission of disease is unlikely. I would prefer a method that prevents attachment, but I have her on Trifexis (heartworm, flea, gi worm preventative) and I really don’t want to switch that up, which I would have to do if I put her on an oral or topical tick med. The Saresto collars are expensive but last 8 months, are “waterproof,” and don’t bother the dog at all. Highly recommend if you are not using one.

Best blind buy and bang for buck in a long time. I have D&G Light Blue, which this one’s always compared, but I’m enjoying this more. Life with teenagers: there can never be enough cookies in this house. Yesterday I found a box of coconut macaroons, lost for a few months in a kitchen cupboard. A little stale, but guess what? A dab of Nutella covers the stale just fine. :D

Day 2 of painting the powder room. Lost a few brain cells yesterday, and am going to design a painting set up with a little more ventilation today. However, even the primer looks better than the high gloss camo green. I would have gotten a first paint coat on yesterday, but the primer made visible some areas that I needed to go over again with some joint compound (where I removed a medicine cabinet and patched the drywall). That is now fully dry, so I’m hoping that today will go a little more smoothly, and I can get two coats of paint on. If I’m really lucky, all I will need is one.

I’m wearing a tiny spritz of By Kilian Gold Knight.

Up & out early. Just in & applied Box of Eels. I think creamy or milky perfumes, may be the hardest category for me. To me, only sandalwood makes a scent creamy. To someone else, it could be a different note. I think that’s one of the reasons scent is so personal. Others choices make you smell a perfume in a new way. Thanks for new ideas.

The event last night was fun, for those who wanted to know. It was held in this small, beautiful cathedral at Greenwood Cemetery. It was a female variety show centered around women’s stories and voice. Kaki King was the musical performance and was incredible. Actress Amber Tamlyn did a spoken word piece, Lorris Davis (married to Damien Schols, who was a death row inmate for over like 18 years) told a story, and there was a comedienne, and a writer. We took a little walk around the cemetery after. Very peaceful at night.
SOTD is Idylle Love Blossom since I wasn’t craving anything in particular and this one’s light and easy.

In Dior Dune today, which I blind bought for a super price when I bought my decant of Ciel d’Opale. I like it, but I don’t know why – in fact, when I sniff my wrists, I don’t even find it that pleasing – but something keeps drawing me to it. It’s very definitely not creamy in any way.
I’ve been having fun trying some Estee Lauder scents at our local Dillards, where they will make up samples of any fragrance for you (they just don’t carry that many that interest me). I think a Beyond paradise shower gel would be very nice. Off to check if that exists…

Meh on the Burberry Soring/Summer collection. It looks like she dressed for spring in Alaska and summer in San Francisco.

SOTD = LM Parfums Sensual Orchid

I initially got a sample of this from OsswaldNYC and it languished in the sample sea. Then I went sniffing with Asali (thesoundsofscent.com) when I was in Copenhagen pre-cruise several years ago and she tried it on skin. When we sat down for a cup of coffee, I kept smelling this lush creamy fragrance. Almost 2 years later, I saw that Osswald had this on sale and I decided to take the plunge, bought the bottle with intention to split it and I did!

And speaking of splits, I have 2 pending that I had been too busy to follow through on — Mugler Aura and Tauer les annes 25. I will email those who had expressed interest. I am also gathering interest in potentially splitting one or both of the new Hermes perfume oils (Cardamusc and Musc Pallida) – they’re $375 for a 20mL bottle and I would like to split out 10-12mLs each if possible; these would be “large samples” ???? for me.

I’m having a hard time figuring out what makes a scent creamy or milky. In fact I don’t think I know of one I’d describe that way, but I must have one or have tried one.
SOTD is Rahele which I applied lightly because I had an appointment to see my orthopedist. As expected he recommended surgery so now I’ll be spending this week getting pre-op tests done. Until I get cleared through those I won’t know my surgery date. It’s nerve-racking.
The other day when I mentioned only wanting to eat sweets like strawberries, somebody mentioned the idea of strawberry shortcake. Thanks! I made some last night, very decadent with butter and cream. There’s a photo of it here in case anyone wants to look: https://www.flickr.com/photos/94283635@N00/42457628861/in/dateposted/.

I LOVE strawberry shortcake. The strawberries here aren’t good enough for making desserts – also plan on a strawberry rhubarb pie soon.

As for creamy scents, there are a few with milk or cream in the name: Jo Malone Sweet Milk, Philosophy Fresh Cream, CSP Matin Calin, I even saw one at Old Navy recently called Sweet Cream & Honey. I don’t think I have any I would call creamy either. Someone mentioned yesterday that La Danza Delle Libellule smells exactly like strawberries and whipped cream – based on your dessert choice, sounds like it would be right up your alley!

      http://perfumeshrine.blogspot.com/2011/10/definition-creamy-milky-lactonic.html
      https://www.fragrantica.com/notes/Milk-199.html
Lots of sandalwood scents are creamy. For example, Indochine, which is very popular here, is quite creamy in my opinion.

Good luck with your preparation to surgery.

Hey, does anybody who is here in the US have access to Les Senteurs Gourmandes perfumes? I am specifically looking for Tendre Madeleine and Cafe Tonka. I see this line very occasionally at online discounters (but not the scents I want) and the company website doesn’t appear to ship to the states. I’m trying to avoid paying as much for int’l shipping as the bottles themselves cost.

I have fine hair and really like Kelp & Mint shampoo and conditioner by 100% Pure. It’s difficult for me to find a product that is moisturizing without weighing down my hair. They have quite a few other products for people who have other issues, like dry hair, etc. I also really like that their products are not full of chemicals.

I also have fine hair, but it has a tendency to get oily. I alternate between 2 shampoos from Bumble & Bumble: the Thickening Volume Shampoo, and the Surf Foam Wash Shampoo. I usually don’t use conditioner unless my hair reaches a certain length. Then I use it only on the very ends.

They carry the perfumes at Ulta and Sprouts Farmers Market as well. And Pacifica itself has the associated body butter, etc. (and a loyalty program).

I’ve been out of the loop this week so chose to sample Zoologist Elephant for the second time today. Marvelously green but might be too fleeting, thanks to their generous samples I’m going to try really pouring it on next time.

I love Elephant – what I find is that the green is super strong for a few minutes. After that it fades to a quiet woody aura but the green is still there for a long time (maybe 8 hours on me) if I put my nose close to my skin. Hope you get better mileage next time!

31 Rue Cambon today for a potentially-difficult doctor visit today. I am SOOO TIRED of having my doctor dismiss all my symptoms that aren’t the usual cold/fever sickness. I’m utterly done, y’all. Da**it.

Was due for a physical, but I was determined not to see the same guy who’s been blowing off my “please check my thyroid level” and “my feet hurt. like, a LOT” and “what is this weird rash on my arms?” requests for several years. I put my foot down with the office manager, and saw a different doctor in the same practice. While I didn’t get *everything* I wanted, I got most of it: a referral to an allergist to test for nickel allergy, a referral to an endocrinologist to test for thyroid disorder (runs on both sides of my family, and in all four cases was not diagnosible with just a TSH check), an order for an x-ray for the finger I banged on the coffee table two months ago, which still hurts, and a recommendation for lots of ibuprofen (about four times what I’d take on my own) to deal with my tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, and plantar fasciitis.

Sorry for the venting. I smell great.

Yesterday, I wore No. 19 for the funeral of the husband of a childhood friend. My heart’s broken for her.

I too am dealing with a lot of doctor and medical stuff and it makes me want to hide my head under a pillow and wish it would all just go away. Good for you to insist on answers. I’m also very sad for your friend. Keep up the good efforts and the good smells.

I’m sorry to hear about your doctor problems. I completely empathize. The common phenomena in medicine of neglecting women’s health issues (and ignoring women patients) and underdiagnosing thyroid conditions in women really make my blood boil. Thyroid conditions run in my family, and I have one relative who spent 20+ years(!) telling her doctors she felt constantly rundown and just not right before one of them listened and knew what to test her for. I’ve got my own experiences, too… Anyway, many hugs to you, and hang in there and don’t stop advocating for yourself!

Hello NST! I have good news and bad news about my clothes washer. The very nice tech determined that it could be fixed, that it wasn’t complicated, and that it would NOT cost an arm and a leg! The bad news is that the parts needed have to be ordered. So I have a repair appointment next week. It’s a big relief to know what is wrong.

SOTD = back in Carnal Flower today for more muggy weather. Hey, if it ain’t broke, why fix it?

Hi NST! Long time no see. I’ve been settling into the new job I started earlier this month and I’m thrilled to say that almost exactly 2 years after I graduated from library school, I have officially become a librarian! Very excited to join the community of librarians here at NST :)

SOTD is from a sample of Tom Ford Mandarino di Amalfi Acqua. My feeling about it is: meh. Perhaps the original Mandarino di Amalfi is better.

Burning perfume question: Has anyone tried Tauer Les Annees 25? If I like LADDM, but haven’t tried many other Tauer scents, is it worth getting a sample?

Hey congratulations! Librarians are like many of the professions dominated by women; underpaid, under valued, and simply amazing.

I think the sample is a steal for the price. If you don’t like it, you can swap it out for something else during the formal swap meet or just create an informal one yourself. I’m dying to try it!!

      Congratulations!

My BIL got a Masters in Library Science and managed to get a few months’ worth of subbing at an elementary school. This was 15 years ago and he has not worked a day since those gigs for no other reason than he believes he is overqualified (hmmmph) for the positions that offered him interviews. Basically, he’s just a lazy bum living off of my sister.

Libraries are a tough field to break into, but an attitude like that would make it nearly impossible! After graduating, I submitted dozens and dozens of job applications and still ended up in a job that I was technically overqualified for – but I’m happy it worked out that way because that job ended up being one of the most useful and instructive work experiences I’ve ever had. Plus I was internally promoted to my current position. I doubt I would have gotten this job if I hadn’t already known and worked with everyone on the search committee.

Wearing a few drops of Shalimar extrait tonight. I felt like celebrating a bit because I had a much better day today than yesterday.

So many things went wrong on Tuesday. I’ve been at my job 15 years, and yesterday was one of the worst days ever. I started to question and second guess everything I did.

Then someone said there was a full moon out; I felt a tiny bit better but still didn’t sleep well last night.
