Monday scent of the day 5/29

Posted by Robin on 29 May 2017 172 Comments

Comme des Garçons Beatles T-shirts

It's Monday, again, but also Memorial Day, and World Digestive Health Day to boot. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Comme des Garçons + Pharrell Williams Girl, by perfumer Antoine Lie.

Reminder: 6/2 will be Antoine Friday...wear a fragrance by perfumer Antoine Lie or Antoine Maisondieu, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Comme des Garçons Beatles T-shirts are available at the Dover Street Market in London.

Hi all! Hot Monday here with 28*C here today. I felt like wearing some lavender on this hot day, so I’m wearing Rania J. Lavande 44. It bloomed beautifully in this warmth.

It’s 30C here in Berlin today and I am wearing ‘Vert d’Encens’ by Tom Ford (for the first time as I just got it) – and the scent is just unfolding in the most stunning way possible. So beautiful – it brings me pure joy. Could very well turn into a favourite of mine.

Happy Memorial day!. In Dior J’Adore. So happy that I just finished this FB that was refusing to go no matter how much I sprayed on it. I am going again thru full bottles that have no much left. At home today resting and resting after the crazy but fun Saturday and Sunday I had with a friend visiting New York. She went into the wildest perfume shopping I have ever seen in such a short period of time. She ended up with a total of 14 FB from Hermes, Jo Malone, Bottega Veneta, Penhaligon, The Different Company and Chanel. It was not easy to resist the temptation of not buying anything for myself, but thanks God I survived. Now Bear’s triple strenght coffee, reading, and watching some TV for a full recovery. So greatful she is gone, I told her :D and that the week is going to be short!

Yes, full price….I told her about discounters and ebay, but I think it is the excitement to go out, trying on different things and deciding on the spot what she likes that gives her lots of enjoyment. She sometimes does that when she goes on vacation to big cities.

She came with her husband and son, so I guess they distributed those bottles in their lugages. Her husband and son spent time with my husband, not shopping, but visiting some places of interest and sharing with friends in common.

She considers perfumes as a therapy. She is a heart surgeon and never wears perfume in her office or the hospital, but as soon as she gets home, after a busy, stressful day, the first thing she does is taking a shower and spraying perfume with real abandonment. According to her perfumes help her relax and feel peaceful. It is a daily routine. However, when she goes out on her free time, she does not wear more than 2 sprays. She likes to feel comfortable and not to disturb people around her.

14 bottles in one weekend? Wow, respect.

Most purchases I make are based on weeks (sometimes months) of ‘research’: sample ordering, trying/(re)sampling and comparing et cetera.
Once in a while a love at first sight pops up and an immediate buy follows. But 14 in a row?

Like you, I also buy after trying. I am careful about it. However I have gone on blind buys many times. Most of her purchases were perfumes she regularly wears like Chanel, Hermes and Bottega Veneta. The TDC and Jo Malone were kind of blind buys after she tried them in the stores. For me it is not enough to decide if I would like a perfume or not. As I said before perfumes for her are a therapy…

      2. Awe my God. At my worst for a full weekend, I didn’t even come close
      3. I’m with floragal – I hope you and she were either plied with samples and/or you got all the samples you asked for

She is very careful with other type of shopping like clothes, shoes, bags, make up, beauty products, home items, etc. However, in terms of perfumes, oils, candles, aromatherapy products, she never limits herself at all.

I had lined up 5 ELdO scents for a week of The Antoines, but my flight cancellation last night has left me slightly disjointed. SOTD is a different Antoine Lie, “Night Flower” from Eris.

    Top: lime, birch and cardamom;
    Mid: suede, tunerose and cinnamon;
    Base: patchouli, tonka and musk.

As good on a rainy day as it was a week ago in the sun.

I was struggling to read the T-shirt slogans above, and then realised that I was wasting moments of my life that I shall never have again on the ruddy Beatles. So I uttered a few unprintable slogans of my own that are unlikely to delight the target demographic, and went back to work.

Happy Memorial Day to all here in the US, and a heartfelt Thank You to all who have served our country.

SOTD is SHL Taklamaken from a dabbler that basically poured all over. Instant love! This has zoomed to the top of my “Fragrances I Will Never Own in a Full Bottle.” But OMG! Gorgeous stuff. I feel exactly like a cat getting a whiff of catnip: I must rub it all over, roll in it, and become completely insensible to anything else. My full attention must be focused on the gorgeousness I’m wafting…

After 8 days of vacation, I am back in the office, suffering from sleep deprivation plus a 4 hour time difference. My body thought it was 2 AM when my alarm went off, and it was so mot happy with me.

I got to meet the wonderful Naz at the Canadian location of The Perfume Shoppe while I was away, and spent a full 4 hours spritzing and having a blast with 2 fragrance friends.

Wearing Mancera Sicily today – a happy citrus scent that reminds me of Ananas Fizz.

        Alphabetical or random order :)

I live in a very small town in Nova Scotia, so this was a grand opportunity to sniff some new and new to me.

I splurged on Amouage Bracken – such a lovely, deep fougere. It smells so much like the deeply forested areas in my areas. I also bought the Mancera Sicily. The Mancera Pearl was wonderful, but I settled for a sample.
I bought 5 ml of 3 MDCI – Cio Cio San, Chypre Palatin and Promesse de l`Aube

I sniffed Clive Christian for the 1st time, and what fantastic quality. I want them all – can afford precisely none.

Montale Blue Amber was a hit for me, but similar to the Amber D’Or by Il Profvmo that I already own.

Sampled Mito EDP and am in LOVE

So many lemmings, so little time.

    Good morning and happy Monday,
I have very few perfumes where I am staying now, and because of the two elderly Siamese cats with respiratory problems who live here, have only been wearing them lightly. The up side is that I’m really appreciating the beauty of the two essential oils I brought with me (sandalwood and jasmine). Sandalwood is often thought of as a single note deal, but the actual substance has so many different notes within it and it changes over time on the skin.
SOTD: sandalwood oil layered with just a tiny drop of Trayee

Yes! It is it’s own perfume. Different Sandalwoods have different notes. I have Indian which I got before it became so scarce. And it smells buttery with a kind of blooming flower quality as it dries down. Australian sandalwood is a bit greener and fruitier, quite floral and really beautiful.

Mysore is no 1 in my book….second runner up would be New Caledonia absolute which is sweeter, milkier and less dry than typical Australian sandalwood.

I’m trying Sotto La Luna Tuberose today. It’s not the instant hit that the gardenia one was, but there’s something in it that’s keeping me very intellectually engaged in its development (if that makes any sense!). I spritzed about 20 minutes ago and am very curious about the dry down.

There’s something about Tauer scents that makes me invest emotionally in them – I don’t think there’s been one that I’ve tried that I could ever ignore or be indifferent to. However, this means that there are a lot of days when they’re just not easygoing enough to wear!

My thoughts go out to everyone who is missing a loved one on this Memorial Day.

        Rose Velours!!!

and I took a trip to the mall today as younger family member needed some essentials at Target. I went to Sephora and picked up three samples for him for the summer (the SA was stingy and also not very pleasant)…I did eight sprays on the right wrist of Eau des Mervielles and eight sprays on the left wrist of L’Ambre des Mervielles because gosh darn it I am going to love these one of these days…..(and if truth be told the amber one is starting to grow on me)

Now that I am home I am doing some experimental blending…on the top of my right hand is vintage Amazone with a spritz of Orange Sanguine on top and on the top of my left hand is Black Flower Mexican Vanilla with a spritz of Orange Sanguine over it…I am truly loving both combos!!!

          Hermes D’Orange Vert
          Dior Sauvage
          YSL J’Homme Ginembre

I have been shamelessly watching youtube perfume review videos on TV (much to the chagrin of Mr. CM8 as the perfume videos are now bumping out his “recommended for you” sci-fi movies) and this morning I watched several summer 2017 recommendations and these three were mentioned.

I’m trying La Femme Prada this morning thanks to an overly generous SA (she couldn’t find the cosmetics samples she wanted to give me, so she went and ransacked the perfume counter for their samples), and I’m quite enjoying it. Looked up Robin’s review, and discovered the perfumer was Daniela Andrier. Well, no wonder I like it! Robin’s assessment seems to be pretty spot-on, too, and luckily I like my jasmine mostly declawed. :) Happy Memorial Day, NSTers!

Gaze is in DC with the high school marching band, performing in the National Memorial Day parade this afternoon. I’m not celebrating Digestive Health Day very successfully. Biscuits and gravy for breakfast and I plan on eating cake for lunch. Was doing a bit of research over the weekend and discovered that the Osmothèque website is now way more extensive in English than I recalled. However, it is difficult to find things because it seems to lack a search function. (!) Is this just a problem with my browser, or what is available in English translation? I did, nonetheless, find this interesting post on vetiver:

And thanks for sharing the car wash sign, it made me laugh!

Dunno if you’ll check back again so late, but the brand I am using is called Skinerals, I got it off Amazon. The color is good on my super pale skin :)

I’m spending the next three days at a residential leadership course, the second part of a year long course run through work. Last time I took just two perfumes, this time I thought “Why travel light – I could fill the car if I wanted to!”, so I’ve packed a few. I’ll be starting in 24 Faubourg, I think.

SOTD = back to the sample stash and testing Derek Lam 10 Crosby’s Looking Glass. Meh.

Memorial Day is always melancholy for me. Part of that is remembering my father, who is buried in a National Cemetery. He passed long after his military service ended, but the memories of hearing “Taps” after the funeral are still sad ones. I take today to remember him, and others in uniform, such as police officers, firemen, and EMTs, who also serve our communities. Thank you, for all that you have done.

Taps is such a powerful bugle call; I know what you mean having also experienced this for family loved ones. Can never hear it and not be moved to tears.. grateful for your father and his service to our country.

Thank you, floragal. It’s nice to know that others have the same emotional reaction to Taps.

Wearing Raw Spirit – Desert Blush. As someone on Fragrantica said, it smells like dry heat in a good way :D

SOTD = Byredo Reine de Nuit

Very light application due to scent-phobe family members. This was an instant love for me…rose, berry, patch…very PoaLish but with less projection.

I just found out that Twin Peaks is back on the air. I guess I would call it Twin Peaks 2.0. Nice cinematography and the familiar haunting theme music, but the text typography feels all wrong. Nevertheless, the episodes are just as weird and somehow, more violent and graphic than I remembered. In any case, from the first episode, I have a new expression to use whenever someone is being unreasonable and stupid. Picture this scene: Cops showed up at the house of this couple where the husband was just told he was under arrest for an undisclosed crime. The wife turned to the husband and the cops and said “But we’re having the Morgan’s over for dinner tonight.”

Loved Twin Peaks when it was first aired back in the early 1990s. Rewatched it earlier this year, and a lot of it was axiety-inducing to my old 50+ year old self, which is weird since the show didn’t affect me the same way when I was younger. If it makes its way to a streaming service, I can fast forward the graphic scenes. ????

SOTD: Eris Night Flower. I might have some Puredistance White or Black samples to participate this week.

These are 3 of mine under consideration!

Re: Twin Peaks. I’ve been paying for ShowTime for years and don’t recall ever watching anything on this channel. It’s about time!

Didn’t sleep well last night. Too much going on right now *sigh. Another cold and damp morning and I have a class tonight after work. Wearing Juliette has a Gun Gentlewoman to get me through today because petitgrain counts as perfume vitamins right?
