Friday scent of the day 5/4

Posted by Robin on 4 May 2018 311 Comments

Happy Friday, and May The Fourth Be With You! Our community project for today: it's Star Wars Day. Do what you like with the theme!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I did pick this project, but I'm not a huge Star Wars fan. I am copying everyone this week who decided to match the desert landscape of Tatooine. I'm in Comme des Garçons Ouarzazate.

Reminder: 5/11 will be Musk Friday...you know what to do!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Today I’m wearing my Star Wars Class off 77 t-shirt and a good old dosing of Bvlgari Black, ’cause it’s the scent of Darth Vader – obvs.

Hey, doesn’t Bvlgari Black have “hot rubber” and tar notes? I’m trying to remember the entry from the Turin & Sanchez guide.

    Estée Lauder Azurée

New York socialites, international jetsetters yachting in Antibes in the South of France…
Not bad for a $53 perfume, terrific leather chypre that still surpasses many expensive niche offerings!

      Vegan Girl,
I’m right there with ya, Azuree is astoundingly gorgeous and if it were in another bottle, could easily pass for niche. You smell fabulous!
If you like Azuree, have you tried Lancome’s Sikkim or Halston Couture?

I know thank you!! I tried Lancome Sikkim a while ago, the reorchestrated version not the original, I heard it wasn’t quite the same. I never tried Halston but always wanted to, I should look for the vintage on eBay, they’re very affordable, that sounds exciting!

Azuree is kind of like Aromatics Elixir to me, one spritz and let it develop for about an hour, the mid-notes are so gorgeous, I get 14 hours of longevity.

SOTD (and not related to anything Star Wars, unfortunately) is Tom Ford’s Moss Breches, allergies be damned.
    Happy Friday all!

Does it actually make your allergies worse?

If I wear anything too potent like MB, or Aromatics Elixir they are more noticeable, my allergies in general have been off the charts, not responding to allergy meds. I normally have symptoms in February/March and then they resolve.
I’ve had an allergy/sinus headache for going on three weeks.

I’ve never watched Star Wars, so I just went with what I felt like. SOTD is Vamp à New York. I can never make up my mind whether Vamp or Carnal Flower is my favourite tuberose, this one is more fun and even easier to wear.

You are smelling fabulous! Do you have the edp or edt?

I have the edt so it doesn’t last all that long on me, but I have 2 bottles of it so I can spray away.

Ulta sounds like a great place to spend some time today. Have fun!

I have the EdP. I used to have the EdT before and there is no much difference between the two. I found the EdP softer, a bit more powdery and more long lasting. Both are beautiful!

They have the Coco Mademoiselle Intense, it’s worth a sniff. I liked it alot at first, but the drydown left me with all ambroxan. Because of my sinus issues though, I can’t really be sure what I’m smelling right now. It’s fun just to browse around in there.

Honestly, I did not find anything interesting. I tried Mugler Aura which I think is nice, but not fb worth for me. All regular mainstream perfumes. My idea was going to the other store that is bigger and is on my way home, but changed my mind at the last minute. I did not spend much time there and ended up at TJ Max and then having some coffee at Starbucks.

SOTD is Un Jardin sur le Nil. I think I can match it with Naboo, with its lush garden-like greenery and waterfalls. I read that they used Italy to portray Naboo’s nature, and the climate is definitely not African, but whatever. It is hot again today, and I am doing the best I can.

Since I didn’t have the time to search, I went with Au Dela. I think of AD as a yellow-green scent and a match for Yoda’s skin tone. ???? Tenuous at best but it’s the best I could come up with on the fly. Happy Friday all and may the force be with you!

It was delicious (I made a trial run a couple of weeks ago). I read thru the comments and followed one that suggested it was a lot of cake per fruit so I made half the cake portion and thought it turned out great. I didn’t have trouble with the juices leaking out of my springform pan either, but I also followed the suggestion to spread a little cake batter around the inner edge, like grout. It’s the recipe by Melissa Clark.

Once again I have dragged out Aromatics Elixer. I have spent half my life trying to like, or at least understand this one. It has become a point of honor not to give up. I’m afraid for me, this perfume only exists in a galaxy far, far away.

I agree with ‘keep trying’.. I had the original many years ago, the small bottle. Used it up. I bought another bottle and also had the shower gel and lotion and stupidly gave it away to my sister when I hadn’t used it in forever as she also loved it. Now I’m wishing I never did that

I have a newer version, not sure exactly how old it is but its a huge frosted bottle. The opening is a bit different, but the dry down is very familiar. This is sooo good in the cooler or cold weather.

I also spent half of my life trying to understand it and at least like it, but I finally gave up. I put the bottle aside a couple of weeks ago and it will be rehomed. I just could not look at it anymore. ????

Ehh. You don’t have to “get” everything. I finally “got” Mitsouko after a couple dozen tries (different weather, different versions), but even after I did develop an understanding and appreciation for it, I didn’t love it.

I admire Aromatics Elixir for being bold and entirely its own non-focus-grouped self, but I really only like it three days after it’s sprayed on paper or fabric. (At the same time, I still like to torture myself by smelling the tester every time I go to the department store.)

SotD = Carnal Flower, just a dab from a sample

Carnal Flower is for Leia, in that gold bikini on Tatooine, waiting for her moment to hightail it out of there.

And a Carrie Fisher story from Sharon Horgan:

‘Remembering Fisher, Horgan says one anecdote always sticks out in her mind. “I remember she was on set one day and we were filming with the actress Frances Tomelty. Frances said when she’s choosing a scent or perfume on set, she has to be careful about it because she doesn’t want to wear anything too overpowering or too cloying.”

    Fisher’s response? “I f—— love being cloying.”’

Happy Star Wars Day, I feel the fragrant force.

PSA for eBay. 15% off $50 or more with code PMAY4TH some restrictions. Expires 4 pm PT today.

I am wearing Montale Vanille Absolu and Sweet Vanilla. I am 95% sure that a hand decanted sample from Osswald’s that a lovely NSTer gave to me is really Vanille Absolu and not Sweet Vanilla compared to some manufacturers’ samples. Some great perfume sleuthing on my part. ????

I love the decanted sample and just ordered a FB of the VA from a discounter site so I will let you know next week if I was right!

In OJ Frangipani….finally warm and sultry enough to wear it.

As far as SW goes with this scent, I got nothin’ except maybe it’s a scent Padme would have worn, given the lushness of Naboo…

That being said, as much as I’m a Star Wars person, I’m really a Star Wars original 2.5 movies person….(only first half of Return of the Jedi). I fondly remember dragging my sister out of bed on a Saturday to drive 20 minutes to a 10:30 am show of the original. I saw it again the following Tuesday and then again a week later. And I remember playing cards waiting in line for Empire. Good times.

May the Fourth be with you!

    1) I knew a lot of you would be repping Leia (rest in power, Carrie) so I decided to rep Lando Calrissian in Colonia Intensa. This is the Lando from Empire Strikes Back, all brown curls and blue cape, trying to think- and stay- 3 steps ahead, all the while looking and smelling sexy- and dangerous.

    2) A child on the bus said I smelled ‘very pretty’ and that my hair was ‘fluffy’, so my ego is now impossible for the next few days!

    3) We have a Mexican themed potluck, so I made incredible amounts of home made guacamole. As per usual, I doubt there will be any leftovers.

    SOTD = SSS Bees’ Bliss

I am participating in the Star Wars theme. Really, I am! Let me explain:

This past late December / early January, I was in Barcelona for some R&R and to continue my tradition of ringing in the new year from a place other rah from home. During this trip, I wore Bees’ Bliss quite a bit. My wearing of Bees’ Bliss was made more memorable because I came home to news of radical change at SSS.

Back to Star Wars! Rumor has it that George Lucas took as inspiration the art and architecture of Barcelona, particularly the rooftop vents at Casa Mila and other buildings and spaces designed by Antoni Gaudi. Read this article and judge for yourself!

    https://curiousrambler.com/2016/05/26/gaudi-architecture-in-barcelona/

Do you now see why Bees’ Bliss = Star Wars? ✅

SOY (Scent of Yesterday) was Etro Sandalo… sand for Tattoine? Sorta on theme. SOTD is Couteau de Poche Fumabat, dense chewy smoky green leather, mmmmm. Dunno how this connects to Star Wars, but Fumabat is a pretty sci-fi name, huh? It’s fun to say, anyway. Fumabat!

Serge Lutens Boxeuses: I wore this perfume many times in the past when I needed extra force to be with me. I didn’t know that I would need it today when I applied it in the morning but it proved to be a good choice (though I would have preferred to wear it just for nostalgic reasons). Some days seem just attract annoying situations, unreasonable people and general unpleasantness (not the end of the world but just too much for a single day). The fact that it is Friday makes today a little more tolerable but I want it to be over.

I hope the day for most of NTS readers is better than mine :)

All those clever connections – unbelievable. I can still not come up with anything. It’s like when I look at the New Yorker cartoons that need a caption and I think “Come on, there must be something you can think of….” Nope. Nothing. SOTD is Perle de Mousse by Ann Gerard, another little vial used up, unfortunately, the horrendous dry shampoo I tried this morning is overpowering everything with it’s cheap cologne smell. Maybe this is what Han Solo would use in the Millennium Falcon to cover up the stench of some gooey green alien.

As much as I’ve loved the original Star Wars movie since I saw it when in it came out in 1977, I’ve completely lacked inspiration for perfume connections. I’ve been impressed by the clever things people have come up with during the week, and am looking forward to reading today’s comments.

Meanwhile, I’m planning to do the supermarket shopping in a drop of Neela Vermeire’s Niral. I quite like it, but it’s the least appealing of her releases for me. Discovering that I’m not so keen on Niral does mean that my dithering over Ashoka is leaning further towards a FB.

Stretching, but for some reason Feu d’Issey called out to me today, when I opened my perfume drawer and thought “May the Fourth be with you.” Anakin burns at the end of Revenge of the Sith to become Darth Vader, right? I’m sure I should have gone desert-y, but I did Tauer yesterday and I don’t have much else that says desert. (If I’d had something Irish…as we were trying to schedule a visit to Skellig Michael, or what my kid calls “Luke’s Island” this summer but they were all sold out…but nothing came to mind.) So I let the force choose for me!

I kept meaning to wear Bracken Woman but have not. What a beautiful bottle!

Thanks for all your comments about aromatics elixir. I’m passing it onto my sis , for her to give her friend, who loves it. Now I wonder what my new scent challenge will be?!

I’m a big ol’ science fiction fan but I can’t remember what I wore on May the Fourth (Be With You). I _do_ remember purposely wearing Jean Nate the next day so as not to put off my friend while we went out to see “Avengers: Infinity War” and hit Free Comic Book Day. He could smell me a room away, but opined I smelled like “1970s high school girls”. This tickled me most to death.

I wonder what 1977 smelled like?
