Monday scent of the day 4/30

Posted by Robin on 30 April 2018 200 Comments

Monday, and the last day of April, and International Jazz Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Stella McCartney L.I.L.Y.

Reminder: on 5/4, May The Fourth Be With You...it's Star Wars Day. Do what you like with the theme!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

PSA-PSA-PSA. Looks like TK Maxx (UK) have got more L’Artisans in (old packaging). Just been in during my lunch break and spotted (amongst others) Bois Farine, Voleurs de Roses, Drole de Rose, Traversee du Bosphore, Safran Troublant, L’Eau d’Ambre, Timbuktu, The Pour Un Ete, Nuit de Tubereuse and Batacuda. Anyway today I’m in Rose Privée by (cue twilight zone music) L’Artisan Parfumeur.

Ah, TK Maxx. Always tantalizingly close to TJ Maxx, always having better perfume, always just out of reach…

I know. All I ever see at our TJ Maxx is low-end department store stuff and celebuscents.

I saw Angel Muse for $29.99 yesterday at my TJ Maxx. Other than that, all the usual celeb stuff. Years ago TJs used to sell great stuff. I wonder if the discounters dried up their sources?

Yeah, most of what I saw at the TJ Maxx near me was Juicy Couture. There was one lone bottle of something from Burberry.

        100mls – £49.99
        50mls – £39.99-£49.99
There were 30ml bottles of Mon Numero 10 and L’Eau d’Ambre Extreme but I didn’t notice how much they were.

I am in Mugler Cologne. Connection to Star Wars theme? The color of the juice is very similar to the color of the lightsaber Luke Skywalker made completing his jedi training. Plus, fro some reason, this scent gives me a space travel vibe.

I’m wearing Orange Star from Tauer. I should have read the review first. Although I spritzed lightly (for me) I think I spritzed too much. At this point I smell like the deodorant spray in public bathrooms.

Ooof – hopefully it will mellow soon. I have a sample of a skincare product that smells EXACTLY like the disinfectant they used in rest stop bathrooms when I was a kid in the Midwest. It’s actually amazing how well they replicated it.

It’s a scrubber on me too. Unfortunately, when I tried soap and water, it didn’t work. I can still smell it. Time for a hot shower.

I dropped by Belk last week to pick up my mom’s Mother’s Day gift (No. 5 body creme, at 15% off!) and stopped by the EL counter to sniff things. Tortured myself a little bit with Youth Dew, just to make sure I still hate it (yes) and and was sniffing the tester for Private Collection with pleasure when the SA came over and told me I was doing it all wrong, and the best way to smell something was to spray it in the air and wave the tester paper through the spray and then sniff *that.* Oy.

Ha! This is exactly the kind of SA interaction that tests the bounds of my already somewhat combustible manners. I guess it’s a good the SA was there, though— he/she was probably just trying to avoid having to reset the “Days Since Catastrophic Olfactory Accident” sign back to zero. Who KNOWS what could have happened if you’d persisted in sniffing your way! ;)

Yeah, I might have ruined her day (eye roll) by yanking out the Aromatics Elixir tester on the other side of the aisle and spritzing it around.

I’m surprised there’s not a photo of me behind the counter of my local Ulta, I’m probably the worst offender of AE spritzing in there! Oddly I just realized I’ve never actually tried it on my skin- I always just spritz a blotter and stick it in my purse for later huffing! I’ll have to remedy that (and ruin someone’s day in the process, as you say)!

      • KellyC says:
        30 April 2018 at 11:21 am

Sniffing at a counter drives me crazy for this very reason. These kinds of encounters annoy the heck out of me.

Went to Sniffapalooza this weekend and it was a quite fun. My take home haul was about 50 samples, a bar of soap, and a bottle of liquid soap. I did a lot of sniffing and got a bit headachy Sat night, so I was a bit less intense with sniffing on Sun. Woke up this morning to a gorgeous drydown but I’m not sure if it was one scent or a mishmash. Showered and put on something familiar and easy so my SOTD is Sideris

SOTD is Frederic Malle Monsieur.I do sniff the DNA it supposedly shares with Portrait of a Lady, but that being said,I prefer the latter.Monsieur is a big perfume, but also kinda soft and mellowy. If PoaL is an almost-black red rose,Monsieur is a dusky pink one.Still,a pretty damn good perfume!

Another dark, cold, rainy day. I’ve been offline and off perfume since Thursday with a very sick dog (congestive heart failure crisis, two days in the emergency hospital). She is better but won’t eat, so back to the vet today for an appetite stimulant. I was way too stressed to wear perfume, but today I was able to put a spritz of Profumum Meringa on.

Thank you everyone for the kind words, I am feeling rather desperate. Brought her back to the vet because she wasn’t eating and found out she is also having back pain due to a disc problem at the base of her spine. Doctor prescribed five days of steroids. I gave her the first dose and she promptly started vomiting. Sigh. This dog is going to kill us with anxiety.

Wearing Cuir de Russie today (the Exclusifs edt from around 2014 or so)— I was inspired to pull it out after seeing Lizbee post about it on the weekend thread, even though I wouldn’t generally have thought of it as a scent to wear in spring. My history with it is complicated- I fell in love with it and impulse-bought a bottle but then never really felt I successfully wore it again. But last night and today I’m really enjoying it again! It smells very very different on my skin than on any fabric it gets on, and much better. On fabric I’ve felt it to be very very leathery, almost beefy even, and austere, dry and more masculine. On my skin it’s not extremely leathery at all, but very sweet and rounded and floral. Part of this may be that I’ve only really tried it in much colder weather— I always find that temperature can have a huge impact on my experience with a scent. Anyway, it’s undeniably lush, but today it feels wearable by me, whereas before I thought it was too fancy, too posh, too austere for someone as resolutely casual as me.

Ooh, that’s rough. It’s been a while since I’ve had that, fortunately, but I remember one particularly bad episode and I couldn’t eat cheesecake for years since it was the last thing I remember eating (though it likely wasn’t the culprit). Glad you’re feeling better, though!

I’m wearing Arizona today. I’d like to pretend it was because I was clever and thought of the desert/ Tatooine connection, but really I just thought “Haven’t worn this in a while. Time to spray!”

It’s much more jasmine-y than it was the last time I tried it. And this time I can actually smell the “special minerals” really well. It’s starting to really grow on me.

I don’t believe in the jury system, after having been involved in a case and seen up close that the general public is not capable of rational impartial judgement, so I refuse to serve. I filled out the form on the back saying I no longer live in San Diego County.

The one case where I ended up sitting on a jury — child abuse — yeah, same. The other folks literally did not care what the judge’s specific instructions were, or how the law was explained to them, they just cared about how they felt about the situation and what they thought should be done about it.

I smell fabulous today, in VCA Bois d’Iris from the swapmeet. I just love this more and more every time I wear it. I thought I just liked it a lot, but now that I’ve worn it a number of times since the swapmeet, I’m pretty sure I love it.

It doesn’t quite relate to Star Wars, but I am currently reading Carrie Fisher’s The Princess Diarist. So I’m kind of on topic in life, if not in perfume?

Nice (but odd) of your asthma doctor to buy you perfume! Ha! I definitely didn’t get big spray. The first whiff I got when I sprayed smelled like… LOTV. Green and a bit peppery. And then I lost track until the clean, soapy drydown. I may not have missed anything in the middle.

Histoires de Parfum 1926 (Turandot) today. The daffs are still out, and the cherry blossom is fighting through, and the trees have the light frill of the palest greens. Leaving the house this morning it was cold enough to create dragon breath, but by lunchtime there was some warmth in the sunshine. The combination of the slightly spicy narcissus & carnation layers, with juicy pear (fruit! on me?!) sitting on the soft ambery-incense made me awfully glad I succumbed to the wee 15ml bottle of this in Paris.

And I have finally taken the step of applying to drop one day a week of work to have more time on my dissertation–taking a couple of hours each morning to get an extra small slice of productive time, rather than trying to cram it all in to late evenings and weekends. Feels like a very sensible step. Fingers crossed it will be approved! (of course, I doubt my workload at work will actually shrink…)

Not on theme (I think – I’m no good with Star Wars references at all and can barely remember how to spell “wookie”) in Tiare by OJ. There is a note in there that bugs me – on a sensitive day, it would be headache trigger. It’s this woody note. Is this ISO-E super or am I just imagining things? I found some of the other OJ fragrances had that woody note that I don’t love. Which is kind of annoying, since I bought all those samples based on the lovely Champaca – but only “woman” has turned out be something that I like so far. Grrmph.

However, I have finally filled my Fragrancenet cart and didn’t go with any Guerlain at all – I got a bottle of Seville a l’aube, and I found one more 10ml atomizer last night I could decant into – we’re looking at about $10 including shipping to CONUS. elke dot schmeling AHHt geemail…

IIRC, yes, iso e super and lots of it. Geza Schoen is fond of iso e super, I think. So am I, which I think is partly why I liked lots of the early OJs.

I took plenty of photos of my kids when they weren’t looking at the camera or weren’t cooperating with the photographer, lol. Some of their sullen-faced photos are among my favorites, and I even framed a couple.

Ok, I find those clothes stunningly hideous, but THOSE PUPPIES OMG.

Yeah, the puppies are the stars of the show. The look on that one little boy’s face as he hugs a puppy is beyond precious.

And now, for something completely different… has anyone here purchased from FragranceX? If so, was it a good experience, a bad one, or indifferent? I have seen a few interesting things on their site, but am a little wary of an unfamiliar vendor.

I’ve bought a couple things from them, no problems. I hate the cheap look of their website, though.

I’ve also bought from them and no issues to report.

I’m wearing The Body Shop Bowhanti, which I picked up at Marshall’s yesterday for the princely sum of $8.99. I like it. There just happened to be one open on the shelf so I could sneak a sniff. On Fragrantica, under “reminds me of”, it’s compared to Feminite du Bois, and while it is lighter than that, I can definitely smell a family resemblance.

Blustery day here,????went with old spice cologne, since I had to use the aftershave, brand new blade and I sill managed to nick my legs.hmmm????may the 4th, Star Wars, I might go with Penhaligons Tra la la, it definitely comes across as a drink served at a setting cantina, and the slight dusty note fits Tatooine well I think. ????happy day all!

    SOTD = Lubin Idole EDT

I scored a partial bottle from a Basenotes splitter. It is my second wearing and I am loving the spicy woody not so rummy rum. I wore 3 sprays so as not to gas out myself.

This week, to participate in the Community project, I am wearing Out if this World perfumes. It could be the bottle, the fragrance, the name (lots to choose from in this category!), may tick more than one of these OR whatever the h-ll I want ????.

Mid-Atlantic folks, enjoy the cool while you can; we are in for scorching temps later this week. Waaah, I want it to be a coolish Fall all day everyday!

Checking in on the late side–I’ve been down in Galveston and someone just brought me back home. (I still can’t drive.) I went to get my mail and found my neighbor’s gardenia bush is COVERED in blooms now!! Here’s a picture. Wow!

Huh, those gardenias look totally different from the ones we have. I didn’t know gardenias like the ones in your picture existed!

Second posting to ask: Has anyone tried the Different Company’s After Midnight? I want it exclusively because it is such a stunningly beautiful color. Does it smell as nice as it looks? Does it stain clothing? (They say it doesn’t, but I’m curious.)

When I went to my mailbox, I also discovered I had a package from Zoologist with two samples I’d ordered: Hyrax and Moth. Very naively, I sat down to my laptop to do some browsing and sprayed Hyrax all over my wrists and hands and neck. OH NO. This stuff is very potent and animal-odorific. Like when my big dog had gone out and rolled in something dead. That dog would surely love Hyrax. I’ve found a perfume that smells like Chewbacca.

Busy day today, training with my co-worker friend on a few of her accounts to lighten her load. I’m pretty tired from listening and watching.

I grabbed my rollerball of Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black; it’s pretty quiet and non-intrusive, just what i needed.
