Tuesday scent of the day 4/10

Posted by Robin on 10 April 2018 280 Comments

It's Tuesday, and it's Siblings Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Bruno Fazzolari Feu Secret. I am on my second cup of Earl Grey, from my tin where I throw all the Earl Greys I don't love and mix in some Lapsang Souchong.

Reminder: 4/13 will be Monopoly Friday. You Inherit $100....wear the fragrance (presumably from a sample or decant, but it could be from a bottle if you're planning to replace or stockpile) that you'll buy with your windfall. It has to be something you can actually buy for $100 or less! (If you never played the board game Monopoly, this is based on one of the "Community Chest" cards.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Nina tea set ("Tea and socialising go hand-in-hand for you. Your idyllic companion is not a single mug or a infuser made for one, it’s a complete set made to be shared. Beautifully organic and easy to use is this Nina tea set. Admire its beauty as you chat and laugh away.") is €60 at Viva Scandinavia.

I’m wearing Monserrat and hoping the grapefruit wakes me up as I am extremely underslept with lots to do today!

I wish the inheritance was $110 because I think my next purchase is a bottle of Idyllwild.

I heart Monserrat. Zippy. I hope you get the $100 because Idyllwild is well worth it.

Wow – that’s super exciting. Congratulations! Also – love your SOTD. I’m becoming a big BF fan – I also like Unsettled and Ummagumma (which I thought I wouldn’t). I only have sampes currently and haven’t tried his others yet. Unfortunately, he doesn’t work for this week’s scent project, but I may spring for his Portfolio Discovery set for $30.

I love that tea set! It looks so touchable.
This morning, I *would* have worn Putain de Palaces ($90/50ml) for the community challenge except that I don’t have any. It’s a contender for spending my $100 inheritance on anyway. In the meantime, I’m faaaaaaaar from the challenge in Tsarina, which I received in my OJ Travel Lab. It’s fine. Not really moving me the way I wanted it to.

Shout out to my brothers ( who will never read this) for Siblings Day.

Lizbee, I have a sample of Putain de Palaces which I just tried, and which does not work for me. It claims to be LOTV, but all I get is straight up lily, which I do not like. It smells very generic and kind of like one of the Juicy couture perfumes on me. Want it? missionista at yahoooooooo

Huh. Are you sure it’s Putain that smells like lily? It’s all cosmetic powder and leather(and a hint of sweat) to me.

Yeah, I get face powder and suede out of Putain as well, and the faint wisp of a powdery rose. No lily or LOTV.

Yeah, my recollection was Don’t Get Me Wrong was the white floral thing… and maybe I need to retry it now that I think about it, since I didn’t like flowers much at all when I tried it.

          • missionista says:
            10 April 2018 at 2:33 pm

ACK, you’re both correct! I was testing Putain and Baby, Yes I Do at the same time…Yes I Do was the lillies/Juicy Couture, and Putain started off really well, with a nice hint of pure sex and some flowers but then turned into something that made me want to sneeze…I vowed to get rid of Yes I Do immediately, and think about Putain and whether it was worth it. Thanks for your sharp eyes.

I woke up to ginger and spicy chai as my father in law is here visiting with crazy monkey and my baby Buddha.

I am embarking on my first solo trip since have the two kiddos, so he is here to help out. I will be going on a much needed meditation retreat so I may disappear for a short time and at meditation retreat centers there is a strict no fragrance policy.

I am in Beyond Love by Killian, from a sample. I don’t think I could find this for 100 bucks..maybe the travel spray..not sure!

Good morning. Finally a bit of sun here in Ohio.

I’m into my second day of Bruno Fazzolari Fontevraud. The initial back rust and dry down are good on me but there is a middle burst of rise that throws me off. Need to try this out on some warmer days.

Oddly I’m fascinated by the progress on an event space next door to my building. The restaurant and pub are the current “its spots and the restaurant has decided to put in a nice event space to round out the building. There is something very exciting watching and old building become some thing new and hip again.

Sorry. I am giving up coffee and I can’t seem to think.

The initial blast (not back rust) and dry down are beautiful. There is a moment with the rose (not rise) that gives me pause but it passes quickly into a lovely scent.

            My apologies for the confusion.

A decent Lapsang Souchong can cover up many deficiencies, although I suppose you could argue it’s a waste of a decent Lapsang Souchong :-)

Good fragrance pick — I was glad to see it made the cut into the new packaging. Still bummed about Mandragore, though.

Mandragore is the “better” scent of the two. I need to get me some edp of that. I “only” have a bottle of EDT.

I don’t drink as much Lapsang as I used to. I’ve started drinking my favourite MF green teas. You turned me onto those actually.

That tea set is very appealing. I’m not sure if it’s the color or the shape, but I really like it.

I’m wearing Bois des Iles (EDT) from a sample. Every time I try it, I like it in theory. However, I don’t like it on my skin – it feels like I’m playing dress-up for some reason. This sample is going to find a new home, because I’m giving up on it. Life is too short to feel uncomfortable in a fancy perfume.

I was thinking the same thing about that tea set and I think it’s both the shape and the color- it has a very zen like vibe.
Many of the Chanel’s certainly have that fancy dress-up feel for me too. I was also going to suggest Samsara, but get your hands on the vintage. It is sooo lovely and smooth and without the Chanel aldehydes feels more wearable for me. Or there’s Tam Dao for straight up sandalwood.

Good luck with surgery. I can’t remember what it is, but having just been in the hospital myself, I want to advise you to be straightforward in asking for pain or nausea medication if you need it. They will usually respond and there’s no reason to try to be a super stoic.

      Good luck with the surgery!
If you’re staying overnight, bring ear plugs, suite mates (and tv’s) can be loud, don’t be afraid to ask for pain meds, getting ahead of the pain is important.
If you have issues with nausea, ask for a Scopolamine patch; once applied, it gives up to 72 hours of relief and it can bridge the gap between doses of Zofran.

    Good morning Y’all!

I pulled out a forgotten sample of Jo Malone Tobacco Mandarin….KAPOW!!! This is just soooooo good!! Wish I had snapped up a bottle last summer, but there always the chance that they’ll re-release it.

I can barely keep up with the Jo Malone releases on NST, much less drive into Atlanta to go sniff ’em! :)

Good morning, dear friends! We woke up at 5am to take our new flight to Paris (after those six agonizing hours on the phone with Air France/Delta). These flights are much worse than our original direct flights, but at least we will get to Paris!

Wearing Venenum today, which once again fails the CP completely. I do have a backup sample in my purse of Kulfi (to get more of that spiced cream flavor!), which IS well under $100, and if I were to get an unexpected $100, I’d happily buy a bottle of that.

    Paris, here we come!…in like 16 h.

I’m in Hermes EdM yesterday and today; the plan is to wear it all week. I could definitely find a bottle of this for under $100. I find this one so comforting and familiar, and I think if I were to have just one perfume it would be this one.

So, today I’m in Philosykos. While it is the only fig fragrance of the few that I’ve tried that I actually like, I’m not sure that I would commit to a full bottle yet. I finished my manufacturer’s sample, but rather than a full bottle, I think I will spring for a decant.

To celebrate this dubious day, I’m once again wearing SL Vetiver Oriental. Good stuff!

Now, to get serious. Why, why, why am I asked if I want to give a tip to a restaurant when there is no server?? I’m placing my order at the counter, and picking up my order at the counter! Why is there even a question of a tip?! I don’t get it…

Woke up with a wicked headache, but being so conscious of healthy habits in the last year, I’m eating a chocolate chip bagel so I’m sure I’ll be right as rain in a New York minute????

I suppose because low paid staff are serving you and possibly cleaning up after you, but yeah, I don’t mind a tip jar at all, but don’t care for systems where you have to say yes or no — it’s like when they ask at Whole Foods if you want to “keep or donate” your bag refund.

Subtle forms of shaming are not the best way to please your customers.

      Hope your headache improves!

The shame game winner is the employers, who don’t pay staff a livable wage. I pay for my bagel and coffee, pick it up from the counter myself, and clean up after myself. And I won’t even go into having to repeat my order 10 times because the cashiers don’t listen the first 9 times I tell them “Bagel, toasted, cream cheese, small coffee.”

I’m not bitter, really! And my headache is gone. I just hate the continual dumbing down of everything on this planet, and the way every company spins the “We’re doing you a favor by doing taking your money,” sporting a big BS grin.

In a previous life I was an ascetic, and a hermit, I’m pretty certain. ????

Yeah, agree that it’s the employers who should should pick up the shame ticket. Depends what I’m buying, but I don’t tip when I buy a drip coffee. It’s already like $3 bucks in these parts and $4 is really excessive for a plain ol’ drip.

My lower back is still bothering me. Since posting about it last week, it started improving, so I stopped taking the naproxen. This past Sunday, while watching TV from the living room sofa, I dozed off. When I woke up the back pain was back with a vengeance. Now I am back to naproxen, epsom salt baths (thank you for that tip, Ede97005) and bio freeze. I have an appointment for my annual physical/checkup on Friday and hopefully the doctor can give me some insight. Hopefully :)

630 this morning, waiting for the school bus, I heard birds singing! I was so excited I threw open the window like scrooge on Christmas day, it was only 24 degrees, but still birds! Spring! I decided to play sample roulette and am wearing I miss Violet. I have no idea how much this costs, but I can tell you that it is very similar to Agent Provocateur Maitress. A little dirtier, but similar. For anyone who likes the lipstick, make-up vibe, Maitress is perfume math free.

Retrying this 1990 vintage bottle of Parfum d’Hermes that Kafka made me buy (kidding, but I’m going to blame her anyway). Bought it on ebay, still in box, bottle almost full — an unloved gift put away for years?

Reminds me very much of Chamade. Which is fine, I guess, but I already owned some Chamade. Worse, I don’t get the basenotes in any strength at all. It just fades on me. Is it me? Is it this particular bottle? Was it never Meant to Be?

Participating today and wearing CdG Rhubarb. A whopping $55 on Luckyscent right now – sure, it doesn’t last forever, but at that price, re-spraying is not an issue. It’s a fun one.

I’m wearing a strong dose of Infusion d’Iris from a decant I’ve had since MUA days. I’ve almost finished it off (15ml). It’s become darker in color, richer, and stronger so of course I’m worried I’ll be disappointed by a less rich current version if I end up buying it. I don’t even know if what I have is EDT or EDP, though I’m guessing EDP.

If it’s old it’s probably the EDP. The EDT was released more recently.

Thanks for all of your good thoughts, the minor surgery seems to be correcting the issue and hopefully I will be back to center in a few more days. Meanwhile, it looks like spring will spring into summer on this coast–not looking forward to 80 degrees, but I do love seeing the sun finally.

I think my $100 inheritance would go towards the new Aedes Musc Incens when it comes out. Then I just have to come up with the remaining $145. And really $145 is pretty reasonable for a 100 ml Aedes, so since I’m saving so much money, I will have some extra money to spend on Bruma…

Good morning NST – I love reading this week’s challenge entries – good to hear about all the bargains out there. I’m commando, because I have too many new samples at once and can’t decide quite yet – many lovely choices. My Jayne Ormonde sample set arrived yesterday and they didn’t quite get it right, so the one I really wanted to try (woman) is not here (yet). I sprayed on all the other ones yesterday and none of them comes close to the fun and beauty of Champaca (I got Tiare, Osmanthus, Taif, and Sampaquita because they were out of Frangipani). Oh well. Maybe more careful sampling will reveal a winner.

I’m in Kenzo UFO (which I did buy for 100$/or less) but would be a perfect windfall scent if I hadn’t and could find it; subtle and persistent metallic skin + vanilla, and doesn’t smell like a certain time or place, to me anyway.

It took 4 hours of claustrophobic cramped waiting, the first hour standing in the hallway before being allowed into the waiting room to get a number, with kids bouncing off the walls and babies wailing. The health service is like immigration, you are treated as though you are trying to defraud the system and must prove your innocence. I was served by a humourless clerk who gave me the evil eye and interrogated me on my absences from the country before being approved to have my card renewed. I hope they give me at least a five year renewal as I can’t face that again any time soon.

Warm cloudy day with a promise of rain. Mille et Une Roses by Lancôme from their La Collection re-issue.

I wonder how different it is from what they currently have: I’ve never seen those newer bottles for it or other Maison Lancôme perfumes at a store and having them already makes it strange to pursue paid samples from the decanters. Has anyone tried them?

I have not tried them on skin but they were also at the La Jolla UTC Nordstrom. I was mighty impressed with the lavender one (Lavande Trianon, didn’t smell much like lavender to me but smelled just really good), as well as the Jasmine Marzipane (this did have that marzipan note). They all smelled good, in fact (they also had one of the oud ones). But felt I so clearly don’t look the part, there wasn’t a point in asking for a sample (plus, I had already 4 Byredo samples and the citron noir sample so felt a bit greedy).

Ready to get back home but hard to leave my dad. We really have to figure out next steps for him. None of us (except him) is comfortable with him being by himself. I think in-home visits may make the most sense. But, it’s a process….

    Top: myrrh, tonka and benzoin;

    Base: beeswax.

A comforting scent for a grey and murky day.

Anybody know anything about the Hermessence scents “Myrrh Eglantine”, “Agar Ebene” or “Cedre Sambac”? I remember a lot of noise when Muguet Porcelaine was introduced, but these seem to have sneaked past while my back was turned. :^)

A*Men Kryptomint. Oof. I bought a decant of this last fall because I love a good mint note. I didn’t get much from it in the cool weather and put it aside for warmer days. Well, I’m getting more today and it’s not good. On me, it smells like the minty patchouli note from Angel merged with a strange roasted nut note topped off with cheap barbershop cologne. I also spritzed about eight times (because I somehow remembered that it was subtle) and thus will be “enjoying” it for a while. Hope everyone else’s Tuesday perfume adventure is more successful!

Morning, all. Storms and cold weather here —one day of it, at least, then the temperatures climb back into the 20s again. I’m wearing a jacket that makes me look a bit like pilot, but for fun, I’m wearing very un-piloty, blindingly gold-gold-GOLD brogues. I wanted a perfume that is also light-hearted and a lot of fun, but the perfumes that dance and sing also tend towards warmer weather. In the end, I reached for Black Cashmere, and finished with Ambre Narguile….how did that happen? My hand had its own will. Creepy, but it made a good choice. I’m happy in my ambience of spiced apple crumble.

Must away. Have to be at work early to finish a memo that I had forgotten. Be well , all.

Yesterday’s sun didn’t last. The haar was in this morning. I rather like the surreal effects of that thick white cloud that descends over the city, when huge landmarks like the castle (and castle rock) just disappear. It makes the things that remain in view look like a stage set: the gothic spike of the Scott Monument in front of blank, solid white.

The sideways rain through in Glasgow, however, was less appealing.

Mito voile today. And another conference paper proposal to write tonight now I’m home from work.

Lots of shady photographs – (is it that hard to make 4 clear photos of the front and bottom of the bottle AND of the front and bottom / back of packaging OR at least add one pic that has the batch code and the manufacturers info on it??) – very high prices for reformulated versions, reasonable prices but outrageous shipping costs…yeah you can easily spend evening after evening on this website…

I’m feeling myself in a bit of a spring slump, perfume-wise. It’s much like the conundrum I face with my wardrobe every spring. Dressing for weather that’s cool but not cold always takes a long time of adjustment before I figure it out. Somehow fall is easy but spring confounds me every year.

It’s not warm enough for spring florals but too warm for winter warmers. I stare at my perfume collection like it’s a foreign language I’m trying to translate but nothing makes sense.

Ended up in EdM Eau Claire, which is working well enough.

The change of seasons can be rough. I also find it challenging to find appropriate clothes and perfume. I tend to wear my mid-weight scents this time of year. I feel like I have some good options in this category but I do enjoy wearing florals in the spring. Now if the weather would cooperate! I hope things perk up for you soon!

SOTD: Diptyque’s Vetyverio EdP for a hot Wednesday morning. Apparently a change will come in tonight returning us to our usual autumn program but I’ll believe it when I see it…

Running late today. At least the sun is shining. ????

SOTD = Rose de Siwa, from the decant/sample stash and Petunia. Such a pretty, pretty rose. It has been playing hide & seek with my nose for the better part of this afternoon. ????

It is pretty and wearable. I can usually smell it for several hours so maybe an additional spritz if you wear it again?

I think maybe my nose was getting “surprised” by the perfume every so often. So far Rose de Siwa wears rather soft and close on me. Next time I will try another spray and see what happens.

Monopoly money SOTD is Calypso by Robert Piguet. I can’t remember if I paid $45 or $65 for my 50 ml bottle? Props to ElisaP for turning me on to it. It’s a great scent for the price.

Yeah, I think I paid 40 something and agree, it’s a quite the bargain. And you smell lovely, of course!
