Thursday scent of the day 3/8

Posted by Robin on 8 March 2018 278 Comments

Happy International Women’s Day! #PressforProgress. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am wearing the jasmine rice accord used in Providence Perfume Co Vientiane. It's lovely and I'd love to have a bottle of it.

Reminder: on 3/9, we're doing Is it real, or is it Memorex?... wear a fragrance that photorealistically duplicates the smell of something else. Suggested by Jalapeno.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Demeter (of course it’s Demeter — photorealism is their brand) Brownie, completely convincing and note-perfect, right down to the salted butter. I don’t know why I don’t wear this more often: it’s perfect for winter, especially on a snowbound day like today.

Robin, are you wearing the fragrance or just the accord?

Right now just the accord. I have also worn the fragrance, and the fragrance layered with more of the accord. (And I will review it, I meant to ages ago but am late as usual)

No. I think she should. Then again, it might be that it’s very expensive to make, how would I know.

I’m considering experimenting with an infusion of Jasmine rice and a carrier oil as I have had success with marinations of vanilla beans, cardamom pods and anise seeds.

Eau de Fleuriste! Among the many things I love about it, every time I smell my wrist I get a different aspect of a florist shop. Right now it’s daffodil stems.

Wearing Queen by Queen Latifah. I received a gift set with a fb, a mini and body lotion for the holidays last year from one of our cleaning women at work. I appreciated it greatly considering that I know how bad she struggles financially. Last week, she asked me if I had worn it already and if I had like it. She told me she had purchased it at Walmart. Since, thee mini and lotion had gone to the freebiemeet, last night I made a big decant for her and took some samples of other perfumes, wrapped them and gave them to her early this morning. She cannot afford perfume. It was my way to tell her Happy International Women’s Day. She was so happy, teary and thankful. That was enough to brighten my day.

I’m trying out two things this morning. On my left hand is Jardin Apres le Mousson (spell check wants that to be “Mutton”, a scent I don’t want to sample!). I have a generous-sized decant and never wear it because in fact I do not like this, not at all. Don’t know if it’s photo-realistic or not since I’ve never been anywhere after a monsoon. The cucumber-melon ends up unbearable, just as I’d remembered. On my right hand is TF Jonquille de Nuit from a tiny sample. Wow, that is some potent stuff! It’s not really any one flower and certainly goes way beyond any simple jonquil I’ve ever smelled, but it’s rather gorgeous. Maybe a bit too sexy for me to go to my lecture in today?

I’ve read in Jean-Claude Ellena’s book that he was always puzzled by why Jardin apres la Mousson wasn’t really appreciated because he was particularly proud of this scent. This has made me want to re-try – I’ve only spritzed it on once and wasn’t all that impressed. Does it have a calone, aquatic note? I really don’t like those.

Did you have to go through a lot of doll head sense to find this one?

I heard Rochas Poupee might smell like plastic doll head – I’ve been toying with putting it in and out of my cart at fragrancenet. Now that I’m thinking about it, and saying the name out loud, maybe I will buy it and keep it in my powder room ????

We are probably suffocating everyone else. In other news, after seeing the doctor yesterday, will be wearing a heart monitor for 2 weeks, ugh… not to happy about it. Hope everyone here is doing ok weatherwise and otherwise!

I watch a YouTuber by the name of Super Dacob – he seems like such a neat person, and loves everything Chanel – bags, scents…that’s where I heard of the new No 5 hand creme.

Revisiting my Le Jardin Retrouve samples and finding Eau de Delices
to be quite realistic lemon. However, citrus just ain’t my most favorite thing, and 20 minutes later it seems to be gone. Their Tubereuse is nice but alas that too, fleeting. For anyone with preferences for subtle and light, this house should be explored. I think I’m in need of a 2am-close-the-bar scent instead today though and so will now go and dig something else up.

I believe it is some other company…they are limited edition dups and the bottles look very similar to the Jo Malones…the large EDT..but they are also selling body creams and body wash and candles as well according to the article..will see if I can find it and attach it here…

Good morning! SOTD is Alahine. Smelling good if I do say so myself. Such a beautiful scent, and love that it really has presence but is not overpowering.

Seems like International Women’s Day has gotten more and more momentum, which is fantastic.

If I can add a note of annoyance, I am tired of the way so many brands cash in on the action — if that many brands took steps towards gender parity instead of just posting pictures of their female employees on FB, we would not need International Women’s Day to begin with.

      *rant over*

Yes, I agree. I do some work in gender parity and it’s downright depressing at times. Good to see some of the top banks recently become more transparent on salary gap between men & women due to a woman activist investor. Much more to be done.

I have never smelled Joy! It might be hard to say how it smells, I believe mine is one of those minis from the holiday gift sets they had in the 90s, so the top notes are mostly broken/syrupy. After that it settles down to vanilla/powder incense.

SOTD is Amouage Ciel. Pretty, but could easily be on someone’s list of frags for folks who do not really like perfume. Last night I applied it heavily for bed. It didn’t really work–there were some heavy, steel wool on wood notes that I don’t smell at all with just a spritz on each wrist.

My older son was born on International Women’s Day, and he is definitely a feminist. He’s all jazzed up about eco-feminism at the moment. Nothing like this old human rights hand hearing her son explain, slowly so I could understand, that eco-feminism is “an important lens.” I am still laughing (but on the inside!) this morning. 17 bounded out the door this AM with a spring in his step—he is young enough to be amazed and enlightened by lenses!!! I remember those days.

I have not smelled Datura Noir, so can’t really say. However, I did not find this one over the top. It is certainly floral, and very slightly reminiscent of an 80’s everything-but-the-kitchen-sink perfume, but it is a lot mellower than, say, Poison. I liked the sample a lot–enough to use it up pretty quickly, but probably not enough to buy a large bottle.

Amazing how so much snow seemed to fall yesterday, yet the streets and sidewalks in my neighborhood are clear.

I have to say, I found Phantom Thread really intriguing. In terms of acting, I found it rather amazing that the actress who played Alma was able to grab my focus away from DDL. That is quite a feat.

SotM = Maria McElroy’s Geisha Vanilla Hinoki perfume oil from a sample

Such a great vanilla, it’s like a precious jewel, glinting in sunlight filtered through a grove of cypress.

Today I’ll read to the end of Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness. For me it reads as an anthropological fantasy set in a science fiction-y future. Le Guin won a best novel Hugo award for it way back in 1970. Perhaps I’ll next read Orlando, another literary meditation on gender.

I can’t afford a FB, but I love Coromandel and am wondering if anyone here has any suggestions for finding smaller bottles, etc. is this perfume still made? It sure isn’t showing up on eBay, big dept stores. Thanks for any info.

Les Exclusifs came in 3 sizes- 1 0z, 2.5 and the big honking 6.8 ounces. There was a sell off on Zulliy, so I would suggest sigbning up on there and patiently waiting- there are sometimes sales of Chanel perfumes on there. Caution: You NEED TO MOVE QUICK.

          Boise des Iles
          #5
          Cristalle
          Beige

The thing with Zulilly is that they will list things AFTER midnight PST, so you have to MOVE QUICK.

Originally, there was an EDT of Coromandel. Around October 2016, Chanel discontinued the EDTs and relaunched reformulations as EDPs. I can’t talk about Coromandel, but I found Sycomore and La Pausa to be RADICALLY different in EDP and disappointing (plus they hiked prices). The EDT and EDP just come in 2.5oz and 6.8oz I believe. There’s also a pure parfum of those of them (smaller size).

I would check out whether or not your sample says EDT or EDP. If it doesn’t say, it is likely an older EDT.

I purchased a bottle of Sycomore EDT on ebay after they discontinued it. So it IS possible to get an old edt bottle if that’s what you’re looking for. I just checked and there are bottles of Coromandel in EDP and EDT on there.

Good luck! I love Chanel Exclusifs.

I recently purchased some original Givenchy Le De parfum. Based on some internet research, I made a 50/50-ish concoction with vodka and having marinating it in the refrigerator for a few weeks. Last night, I sprayed it on my left arm, and it was so much more diffusive and readable then just dabbing the perfume. Sort of smelled like a clean mossy floral. While the sillage was low, the scent is still going strong this morning.

However, I have no idea what the original Le De would’ve – could’ve should’ve – smelled like. If anyone is familiar with original Le De – Could I send you some of my concoction to get your opinion?

Wearing Bal d’Afrique. This is one of those perfumes that every time I wear it I’m reminded how wonderful it is–I don’t know why I never think of it in between times. But it really is a stunner.

    Happy Thursday guys!

    1) So I went to a wine tasting with a friend, which THEN turned into drinks with NEW friends at Clyde Common, which THEN turned into going into the Above and Beyond concert at the Roseland . Incredible time – 5 + hours of straight up dancing! I tapped out at the afterparty though- I had to work today!

    2) Went to bed at 1:45; got up at 5;45 AND still made to work on time.

    3) SOTD: Blue Skies (Lush) and Ren Morocco Rose Body Oil. Massaging in the body oil helped wake me up but be relaxed and ready at the same time.

    4) A very large coffee. And a bagel with avocado. And A/B testing.

CM8, Russkaya is supposed to be benzoin, Russian leather and something else.. can’t remember exactly but I think cardamom. Mostly what I got was the benzoin, with a hint of the leather.

Yup yup, spicy cardamom leather! I guess the spiciness I smell must be benzoin. I don’t actually know what benzoin smells like, so I guess it must be what’s left when you subtract the leather and cardamom from RK. It is really good!

Okay, so I bought that Amouage sample set right?
I showed it to my husband and i told him how Amouage always releases a Man AND a Woman version.
Then he said “you have to buy the Man set as well, then we can do a fun project together.” (He supports the idea that perfume is unisex by the way, but hey we can always treat this like a black and white comparison – the colours of those boxes)

See, you guys are pretty good enablers but who knew I had the 2nd best enabler sitting right next to me???!!! (Yes, probably needless to say but I bought the man set as well, and now my wallet is kinda empty)

SotD was Indolis, by areej le dore.
Beautiful white flowers, greens and i think there was a load of really good sandalwood in the base. From a sample.

Home sick w/ my daughter. I am getting over a cold which I believe I got from her. She has had a lingering cough from said cold for over a week but doc listened to her lungs two days ago and they sounded good. Last night she developed a fever…so maybe a new virus? Le sigh. At least it is not the flu.

I am trying some Omnia Madera and Annunziata Vaniglia del Madagascar…

The Madera is too buttery for my tastes. The VdM is quite nice.

After all the snow was done yesterday, my area had almost 8 inches! Heavy wet snow, too. However, there has been a LOT of melting in the last 24 hours… I’d say maybe half of the snow is gone already. So I’m counting that as a definite sign of early spring.

SOTD = back in Gucci Bloom. It smelled so nice I thought I’d wear it twice.

    Hello again, all, two questions:

    1) Someone (I’ve already forgotten who!) said that Vetyverio reminds them of Sycomore. Is that the EDP or the EDT of Vetyverio that is Sycomoreish?

    2) Would people be interested in splitting one or the other, if I got a FB? I know the splitmeet just ended, so I don’t want to wait until the next one to make a decision. Looks like a 50-mL bottle is $90 for the EDT and a 75-mL bottle is $165 for the EDP, for an idea of what split prices would roughly be.

It’s been a while since I smelled sycomore so I can’t answer your question, but I definitely like the vetyverio EDP better than the EDT. And I found a travel spray of the vetyverio EDP on Amazon for a reasonable price.

Koyel – finally, tomorrow is Friday!

I had a little run in with ice this morning. Thank goodness I had one hand on the hood of my car when I lost my balance and the fall was not as abrupt. I cushioned my fall with my right side so my head did not hit the ground (thank God). I will be sore tomorrow and my elbow will turn all sorts of colors over the next week or so. I will pop a Tylenol, my first for today, before going to bed.

When we were in a a car accident I had a massive hematoma/bruise on my elbow. In addition to the Tylenol, I took some homeopathic arnica tablets and used a creme called TraumaCare. Ice can help with the swelling too.
