Friday scent of the day 3/2

Posted by Robin on 2 March 2018 404 Comments

Datura Stramonium

Happy Uncle Serge Day! Our community project for today: wear something by Serge Lutens (a repeat from 2014).

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I surprised myself by picking Serge Lutens Datura Noir. My decant has seen better days, though.

Reminder: on 3/9, we're doing Is it real, or is it Memorex?... wear a fragrance that photorealistically duplicates the smell of something else. Suggested by Jalapeno.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I planned to wear Fleurs d’Oranger today, but went with Bois et Fruits. Such a true old-style SL – plum, spices, woods, sweet resins. Delicious!

Some day I’m going to hunt down a bottle of vintage Bois et Fruits: I had a decant once and it was just fantastic, but I never got around to buying a full bottle. So obviously you smell great today.

Miel de Bois, possibly the most hated of the entire Lutens line, definitely the most polarizing, because to some people it smells like pee, which it never has to me. I get the entire history of honey — the flowers and their powdery pollen, the wood the hive is built from, the beeswax, the smoke that pacifies the bees, and most all the honey itself, sweet and golden. It’s just incredibly beautiful.

I would really like to try MdB again now that I’ve developed my nose a lot more and my tastes have changed. I was very early into exploring niche when I sampled it and got the dreaded pee note. Now I’m actually drawn to sulfuric notes and those that are almost pee-like (thinking of black currant). And I love your description!

I’m a Miel de Bois fan, I don’t get a pee note, but I can see how someone might. I think it would have gjven me a fright if I’d tried it early in my perfume explorations!

Wearing SL Iris Silver Mist, and indulging further by applying some FM Iris hand cream. It was interesting to compare the hand cream to the ISM and notice how the former is much more floral.

    Wearing La Myrrhe.
The bell jar of this wonderful scent was my 50th birthday gift to myself, and I revel in it at least once a week in cold weather.

The best thing was choosing a sweater that had traces of Encens et Lavande on it. The 2 scent meld to make a delicious, resinous swirl.

Definitely a perfect choice for the weather! To be honest, GC is a disaster on my skin, which is a bummer. But I’m guessing that what I get by just sniffing the juice is what it smells when it’s actually ‘right’, so: You smell great!????

    SotD is A la Nuit.
I can still smell it after 6 hours but I suspect its because some of it got absorbed by my sweater.
    Such a gorgeous scent!

My local dept store is selling Amouage nowadays so I tried a few…I like them, but I am kinda puzzled why they ask 200 to 300 euro for a bottle.
Most of them don’t smell that ‘rich’ to my nose.

Maybe this brand is also suffering from the reformulation virus? A lot of reviewers are raving about them and it also gets lots of love here…what am I missing?

Journey Man, Dia woman, the one that Putin supposedly wears (forgot the name, but the SA thought it was a good sales pitch…argh i hate that guy), Bracken Man, Fate woman (okay that one was quite lovely) and erhm a gold one from the Woman line.

Jiji, I’d say my favorites from Amouage are Beloved, Gold, Lyric, and Dia, pretty much in that order. I think I paid full price for one or two of them and got the others on a discount site. I recently bought a backup bottle of Beloved for less than $150!

Many love the Jubilations, but that depends on how you feel about cumin.

I assume they have grown less deep and complex over time with reformulation, as everything else has, but I haven’t tested different the current versions.

I also think we are becoming inured to more and more powerful and blunt woody notes, musks, synthetic “oud” accords, etc., so Amouage may now strike us rather differently than it did when we discovered it following the era of L’Eau d’Issey, Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, EL Pleasures, etc.

I am also in A la nuit — and I have to chime in on the Amouages. If you have only sampled in-store then you may be missing the full experience. I wrote off Beloved initially. It’s the drydown that makes the Amouages so special to me. I am now a complete convert. I love Memoir, Epic, Lyric, Jubilation, and Memoir (all the Woman versions, never tried the Men). I did not care as much for Bracken or Lyric Love but am going to give them another go. The Library Collection also hasn’t wow’ed me. I also originally had trouble keeping names apart (Lyric and Epic always get confused) but these are scents that I have invested time in and they have paid off.

I’m a fan of the older Amouages, the last one I loved was Fate. Since then, lots of them have been nice, but nothjng I’ve really fallen for. I think my favourites are Jubilation 25 and Beloved. I can also recommend Ubar, Lyric and Memoir.

My favorites are Ubar, Gold, Dia, Lyric and Memoir. From the later crop I probably like Beloved but with this one I haven’t gone beyond the decant. Everything else… I remember that one of the newer ones was kind of OK for me – but I can’t even remember which one. I really dislike their direction in the last 5 years.

I had to chime in here. I’ve tried most of the Amouage fragrances except for the most recent ones, and I think they’re quite wonderful and complex, for the most part. I own three fb’s: Jubilation 25, Fate, and Honour. The last one is not mentioned often but I think it’s a really pretty and unusual white floral, combined with a fruit note (It often strikes me as apple, but it’s actually rhubarb). I also am a huge fan of Library Opus VIII, and I’ve tried most of that series too. It’s the one that stood out way above the others. I’m hoping to find it in a less expensive version sometime and buy that. If you look it up on Fragrantica you will find other reviewers who love it, as did Kafkaesque in this epic, lengthy review: http://www.kafkaesqueblog.com/2014/03/16/amouage-opus-viii-optical-illusions/.

I have two Serge Lutens, one a manufacturer’s sample of Laine de Verre and the other a decant of Fille en Aiguilles. I read the reviews of both on NST, and opted for Fille en Aiguilles. I’m probably going to sound like a philistine, but to me Holy Smoke from Demeter smells much the same and boy, is it cheaper. That being said, I like the incense in this, and it was cool enough this morning that it works. I will probably try to reserve it for winter, or as we say in Texas not-Summer.

Never saw Demeter here in Europe, so I cant compare 🙁 (why are so many American indie/niche brands avoiding Europe? ????)

Sarrasins for this dreary, rainy/sleety day. I’m wowed every time I wear this one. Dragging a bit today. Saw Hello, Dolly last night with Bernadette Peters as Dolly. Fun time! The trip home, not as much with subway closures. Had to wait 20 minutes for a shuttle bus in the pouring rain and I was cold and soaked by the time I got home! I slept like a rock, though.

I had never seen Hello, Dolly until just a few years ago and it’s become one of my favorite movie musicals ever. It’s got some of the best musical numbers – the grand finale in the restaurant is epic. I’d love to see the stage version!

I’d seen the movie many moons ago so Babs and Walter Mathau may have set the bar. This was a fun production and I liked Bernadette Peters. I missed out on Bette Midler-think I would have preferred her. Yes! The restaurant scene was my favorite part.

I have never even tried Sarrasins and always wanted to. I almost splurged on a bell jar when I saw that Neiman’s carries it but I’ve moved away from SL into other lines recently and worried it would go neglected. I’m wondering if there would be interest enough in a split sometime? It would be a blind buy for me but given my love of other SL florals I think it would be safe. I would love to hear more opinions on it, especially in comparison to A la nuit.

It’s darker and sweeter than AlN. Starts out potent, indolic jasmine and calms into a dark, gorgeous honey/jasmine, almost verging on syrupy. AlN is fresher and greener in comparison. And less sweet. If you’re a jasmine lover, you’d probably love it. I’m still working through a decant as I dab very sparingly and don’t wear it that often. I’m sure you’d find split takers.

Not interested in the split of this one, but if you decide to go for it, do not buy from NM – ask hajusuuri or me for the e-mail of the “personal shopper” who brings it back from Paris regularly for much cheaper than NM price + tax (I’m not affiliated – just a customer).

I had a rollerball of it for awhile. I wanted to love it, but just didn’t. For me, it’s a watery pretty floral. I would say it’s not more than 20 dollars pretty, maybe a little more because of the gorgeous bottle.

I am still in a seriously grumpy mood after dealing with my younger son’s teacher yesterday. Long, boring, TMI story (he has an IEP), but the upshot is that to deal with her I must 1. flatter her excessively, 2. abase myself, but especially my “excessive worry,” 3. apologize for how I communicate over and over again, 4. Very very slyly through the back door introduce the problem to her, but in such a way as that she thinks she has discovered it herself and therefor it is worthy of being solved. Gahhhhhhhhhhhhh~!

I’m in the most un-SL fragrance ever, Miu Miu L’eau Bleue. Later after my shower I will join the fray in Chergui.

In Maryland, an “Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a written statement and a legal document of the educational program designed to meet a student’s individual needs.” It’s ironic as well as unfortunate that a teacher trained to meet special education needs should be so difficult to deal with, so I particularly feel for Oakland Fresca.

SoTD is SL Encens et Lavande! My FAVORITE S Lutens, I cant help myslef, it is magnetic and irresistible and I surrender!! . Between the smoldering cinders and the lavender it is always comfortable and appropriate changing just emough to hold my interest. It matches the color of thistle in your photo Robin, a more periwinkle grayed blue than the actual color in the bell jar. I wil own this in 2018!!

Happy Uncle Serge day to everyone – I discovered, on Monday, in my desk at work a sample of Feminite du Bois that I got 6 years ago at Barney’s in San Francisco. FdB was also one of the first perfumes I owned (the Shiseido one) way back when….and I think I threw it away when I moved out my university dorm, at which point the bottle was already several years old and I thought likely had gone off. Oh boy.
Sample is still going strong. In fact, it’s hovering right on the edge of headache for me. Just a tad too rich, too woody, too heady, and totally not office friendly. Now I know why I didn’t wear it much when I owned it, even though it is beautiful, too. Happy Friday!!

I chose Fille en Aiguilles because I haven’t worn this one all winter, and I recently pulled out my decant. Ugh, so good! Piney, sweet incense. I hope I didn’t spray too much for my coworker’s liking. I’m using an Annick Goutal Encens Flamboyant shower gel right now, and if I was thinking properly in the early morning hours, I would have used it today. I bet it pairs beautifully with FeA. The shower gel really lingers on skin afterwards.

Today my “wear the perfumes in the order I bought them” and the community project overlap – I’m in Gris Clair, which was the last bottle I purchased in 2015. I took a long perfume hiatus from 2006 to 2014, so only started my collection 4 years ago.

By the end of 2015 I had a nice collection of 6 bottles. I did not have any sweet, iris-forward or truly woody scents – this was taken care of in 2016 and 2017. I find it really interesting to see how my buying/ tastes proceeded, and what my priorities were.

Stay safe and comfortable if you are facing storms, either weather or personal!

    Happy Friday, Guys!

    1) Reminder: Oscars are this weekend!

    2) I do not have a Serge Lutens in rotation.

    3) BUT! I am wearing Molinard Jasmine layered over The Body Shop Almond Milk body cream. The almond and jasmine/rose together is VERY lovely indeed, without being overly sweet. I highly reccomend the The Body shop Almond Milk collection- VERY smoothing, very hydrating BUT not overly heavy nor clogging on the skin. And the fragrance on it’s own is simply lovely and subtle.

    4) I have a huge zit that looks like Mt. Vesuvius.

After a couple of very welcomed rainy days, I’m enjoying this sunny Friday in Boxeuses. For a long while it was my “spine strengthening” scent but since I changed jobs, I had less and less reasons to wear it. So I’m taking this community project as an opportunity to visit an old friend. I still like it.

    SOTD = Chergui !!!

Just right for a blustery wet day! Musky honeyed amber with chocolate (chocolate is nit listed but I think the combination of honey and tobacco is making me think that).

I haven’t yet read any comments but I predict a good showing of Chergui.

BTW, if you did not like Chergui on first or second try, consider spraying more the next time. I know it’s counter-intuitive but in some cases, overspraying is the key to enjoying a perfume.

If you thought that NJ Transit has a plan to deal with transit issues that are known to happen, you would be wrong. Newark Penn was just a sea of people pushing and shoving. And some have come to fisticuffs and shouting matches. Unbelievable!

Definitely unisex but not sure I’d blind buy it. I’d go for a samole or decant first. I was sure I’d love it but didn’t, though I may be in the minority.

As much as I’m usually against blind buys and agree with Elisa P that it is not a universally loved perfume (I do happen to love it), I think that unless you can test it for free (in a store or getting it in a friendly swap), it almost makes sense to buy the old package bottle (50 ml) if you find it on a good sale: Chergui is one of the perfumes that you should be able to swap easily if you end up not liking it.

I have been in a funk this February, I’m sure many of us have. My genius solution for today: take a shower, get fully dressed.

I think I have smelled 4 Serge Lutens so far:
    Ambre Sultan – love
Sa Majeste La Rose – love
A la Nuit – mixed opinion
    Jeux de Peau – ew!

at first spray A la Nuit smells like so many commercial bathroom cleaners I don’t have great associations with – like gas station bathrooms. Does anyone have great associations with gas station bathrooms? 🙂 Intellectually I know it is beautiful, and it is my own issue having spent more time around industrial cleaners than tropical flowers.

Today, I’m trying Jeux de Peau. At first it smelled like a sugary nut flavored candle, I thought oh that’s funny. When it dried down a few minutes I asked my husband, he said “gourmand with a sort of burnt smell, woody, cedar”. So, is my husband turning into a perfume genius? So annoying.

Now, sadly, it’s kind of nauseating me – I get a little of the bakery vibe – but more “back of the bakery” to me – maybe dough got caught in a greasy gear, near a dusty fan. Smells sort of industrial, or maybe like burnt dirt.

Obviously Serge Lutens grew up in a different time and place, and smelled things I have never smelled. I live in a pretty sanitary world. So I appreciate this scent, but it’s not enjoyable for me today.

Amazing what a shower and getting dressed might do! Sorry about the funk ????
      1) I totally get it about gas station bathroom. Some jasmine (and almond) perfumes smell like that to me (a few Guerlains fall in to that). A la Nuit just missed it for me since it has enough green to my nose.
      2) Jeaux de Peau was overwhelmingly movie theater artificial popcorn butter to me, but the smell at the concession so a bit of that burnt grease thing to me, too.

I’m a ‘no’ on the Jeux de peau too — just like Elisa said, it’s buttered popcorn on top for me which I do not want in a perfume! The drydown is nice enough but I am unwilling to sit through the ‘ew’ part!

Yes, i’m smelling the dry down now – and it is pretty nice. I had an older woman, in her 70s smell it, and she said it smelled ultra Femme like chantilly lace

Sort of reminds me of alaia now, but no – not willing to suffer through either

I can only attest to experiencing it lightly dabbed, but I’d second Jessica’s classification of it as a chypre rose.
        https://nstperfume.com/2012/12/21/25-rose-fragrances-every-perfumista-should-try/
Victoria of BdJ mentions chypre elements, too, and her review seems to match my experience with it.
        https://boisdejasmin.com/2006/01/fragrance_revie_14.html

It’s a dry, dark rose. If you took POAL and swapped the patchouli and incense for musk, beeswax, and a bit of apricot…

Slowdive is the most true-to-life honey scent that I’ve ever experienced. To me, it’s not sorta like honey or reminiscent of honey – it IS honey. It’s apparently no match for the A la nuit though! So you’re wise to be sitting at a distance. 🙂

Monotone is a good word for the Slowdive! I don’t know why I was so surprised that it was so HONEY! That’s what all the reviews said but I guess I expected something more stylized. That’s why I tried this layering thing. You see things like “a honeyed jasmine” in scent descriptions all the time so I was like, why not? Verdict is that it’s nice but I probably would’ve enjoyed just one or two sprays of the A la nuit on its own. I’ve turned it into a competition now. I also am apologetic in advance to any unsuspecting strangers I will encounter when I leave the house later.

I’m starting my Saturday in Chypre Rouge, after a hectic week where I didn’t manage to participate in the project, despite having enough SLs to do a fortnight. I was away for a few days looking after my elderly mother who had gallbaldder surgery, I’m getting the kitchen renovated and I had a job interview yesterday – I’m very glad it’s Saturday and I’m feeling relaxed, even though the kitchen is in ruins!

It’s the first time I’ve done any renovations, I was very anxious, but now that it’s underway, I’m quite OK that there’s been a complication with the benchtop, and that it might be a couple of weeks without a kitchen.

So windy here too!! Scary! They let us go home early today. No snow yet, just slushy rain so far. Glad you got your power back!

I am. They did it mostly for my coworkers who live in the burbs and drive. I’m the only city dweller in my dept. But happy to have a shorter day ????

Still a miserable walk to public transportation. The rain is horizontal. An umbrella is useless.

Like many others, in Chergui today. Had to spray lightly this morning before reaching but now I’m going to go up and spray lavishly – thanks for the tip, Hajusuuri!!

Nothing by Lutens in my stash right now, so I’m in Roses de Chloe. It is trying so hard to be spring here, I thought I’d help it along.

A little late today. Mr. Jalapeno bugged out of work early this afternoon due to the nasty weather, and a brief loss of power at work. Also the possibility of hitting debris on the roads…lots of downed trees in the area.

SOTD = SL Sarrasins. I wore one of his jasmines yesterday, and decided to wear the other one today. Looks like Sarrasins doesn’t last as long on me as Al A Nuit does.

Hope all the NSTers affected by this horrid weather today find themselves safe, warm and dry tonight! And not lose power! ????

Not wearing SL today because I am testing samples of various Areej le Doré fragrances that Kafkaesque has reviewed:

    http://www.kafkaesqueblog.com/2018/01/31/new-releases-areej-le-dore-russian-musk-russian-oud-indolis-walimah-attar-mini-reviews/

My nose often picks up different notes than hers, but I consider that her reviews give a good idea of the complexity, depth, and varied evolution of these natural perfumes.

Nozknoz thank you for sharing that review. I have been out of power since the power pole hit my holly trees @ 7am and have thoroughly enjoyed my full day ( and now night) of perfume reading. ( thanks to backlit iPads!) The Russian Oud sounds amazing and I am very curious about Indolis. Please let us know what you think!!!

Day 2 , and it’s losing it’s shine. Off to the gym for a hot shower I fear!!! I need to wear something pretty today.

I enjoy sampling all of them. None of them are stinky ouds. My favorite so far is Walimah in the attar version (I haven’t tried the parfum). It starts with a burst of tropical flowers — like walking into the green house of the US Botanic Garden when the ylang ylang tree and tons of orchids are blooming. Gradually the flowers tone down and suddenly merge into a leather accord. It stays leather with some modulation for quite a while, and then gets softer in the dry down.

I don’t know what they would be like if I had spray bottles, but there is not much projection when you are dabbing. Not sure I would recommend one of the $300 to $400 bottles, but they are great to sample. Luckyscent and Surrender to Chance are sources.

I’m curious about Indolis, too! Will report back.

Thanks for posting this – it’s so helpful to get another take on these! I was attracted to the floral angles of this latest batch of releases from AlD but am nervous since I got almost zero floral out of the previous ones I’d tried, despite others reporting jasmine et al in them. This Walimah sounds promising for me!!

Yesterday I was all wrapped up in my Rania J exploration (I’ve worn T. Habanero, very strong and very appropriate for the snowy climate we’re having in Europe) and I forgot that it was Serge Lutens day! So, today I’m wearing my favoutite: Chergui, in all its warm, dry, amber-ish glory
