Wednesday scent of the day 2/28

Posted by Robin on 28 February 2018 332 Comments

Hump Day, and the last day of February, plus, Pink Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Serge Lutens Sa Majesté la Rose. I do smell awfully pretty.

Reminder: 3/2 will be Uncle Serge Day...wear something by Serge Lutens (a repeat from 2014).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    St. Clair Scents First Cut

Marzipan’s wonky nose smells this: a burst of bright sunny lemon citrus (bergamot?) with something sweet (vanilla?) coupled with a smooth herbaceous quality (my guess is lavender absolute which is sweeter, richer and more refined than regular lavender essential oil…it is what is used in Voyage to give it that suede quality) which segues into a soft honeyed hay on the very fringe of animalic with a sweet drydown. It is a diaphanous and internal scent which sits close on my scent eating skin but I can still smell it hours later. I am wondering how this would present if sprayed versus dabbed on from a dabber (which is what I did this morning). I think it would bloom gorgeously in very hot weather.

This is such a beautiful scent….well crafted and so natural smelling. I am certain the perfumer uses a high percentage of naturals which is why it does not have that synthetic quality that exists in many other perfumes.

Dang. I expect I’m going to have to try these. Does it really smell like fresh-cut hay? I adore that smell.

Mals, my nose is notorious for smelling phantom notes…but I am pretty certain this has hay absolute in it…the perfumer is actually a farmer in Vermont who makes artisanal butter from her own cows milk (you and she have something in common!)…most of her perfumes are inspired by farm scents….I have thus far sampled the two of her three offerings and they remind me of Sonoma Scent Studio fragrances which makes me very happy…plus she sells 13ml bottles!!! Once I get through my samples I might bite the bullet and break my no buy for a full bottle.

SL Un Bois Vanille, the most accessible and work-friendly of his entire output. The illusion of soft sweetness, in reality a sandalwood box full of black licorice and bitter almond, all the edges and angles smoothed over with vanilla and its cousins tonka and benzoin. Actual genius in the guise of simplicity.

When would you go to Paris? Coin-op and I are both going to Paris in April (though a week apart from each other!). I guess this spring will be the spring of NSTers in Paris. Or maybe that’s every spring?

I think there is a difference between making something a tribute to protesters and monetizing others’ struggles. That said, I haven’t seen or heard anything about this. (I guess I don’t have many friends who watch fashion shows?) I think I’ll have to go check it out and see if I get angry!

          • Robin says:
            28 February 2018 at 10:38 pm

I am trying to decide if it’s a political issue to be for or against luxury brands using protest to sell products? Maybe it is, I don’t know. It seems to me it’s more of a consumer issue? And we can talk about it so long as nobody talks about their partisan leanings?

Well, anyway, even I’m confused, but nobody has EVER gotten in trouble here for anything. The worst that happens is that I edit your comment. Or tell you to hush.

Wearing Guerlain Baiser de Russie from the sliptmeet (thanks KPaint!). It is pretty. I like the citrusy opening and the plum note. The drydown is creamy and I saw the sandalwood coming to ruin everything for me, but it never crossed the limits and is staying there very soft and enjoyable. I like it but I do not need more than this small decant.

February went fast, probably because I have been very busy. But I appreciate greatly that is gone and we are slowly getting closer to spring time.

I washed my hair and used a sample of Lush Happy Happy Joy Joy conditioner and WHOA! What a burst of scent! Woke me right up. Green neroli and orange blossom and my hair smells pretty strongly of orange blossom even after drying it. It’s a light, watery conditioner so good for thinner or oiler hair, like mine.
So that’s my unexpected SOTD. May add a spritz of some sample floating in my bag. Iris Rebelle maybe.

I wonder if its the same scent as HHJJ, because I do smell lots of orange blossom.

HHJJ and R&B are very different to me, though I like both scents. HHJJ is fresher and more citrussy (more like neroli cologne), while R&B is sweeter. But, unlike you, I do not get orange blossom from R&B. I consider it a tropical floral (with jasmine, maybe).

I don’t remember how R&B smells, but this smells similar to the Seanik shampoo bar though the smell in that one is a faint, clean OB. In the bottle HHJJ smells like a very bright green salad with orange.

I like it except for the occasional bits of seaweed I find in my hair later. I know it’s visually pleasing, but I really wish they’d just leave the undigestibles out of their products.

I got my first jar from my aunt and it created massive sillage in her hair. Every time I saw her I’d start sniffing out the source of the divine white florals. I don’t notice it in my own hair, though – either because it’s too short or because I’ve developed nose-blindness as I use it every time I wash my hair.

You are right — I pulled it out of my hairstyling drawer a short time ago, and I do smell white florals also.

Normally I use unscented hair products, but I once got a sample of that conditioner and it was heavenly! The scent was so strong that I ended up mixing it with some unscented conditioner to stretch it a little farther.

That’s a really good idea, though I like that it’s a very light conditioner since my hair gets oily after a day or 2. Which unscented do you use?

I use the Whole Foods store brand or Nature’s Gate Tea Tree (not technically unscented, but very low-scent)

Today I’m wearing SL Rousse. I chose it because it’s PINK (well, sort of). For Pink Day. This one goes on way too sweet and too much like a cinnamon hard candy, but after awhile it softens and it’s softer, more woody. I was debating between this and Jeux de Peau, and it now occurs to me they might be nice layered together. Kind of a cinnamon bun sort of thing. Ha ha, now it must be time for breakfast!

Wearing Fleurs de Citronnier – a Lutens scent that does not seem popular. I love it. Lemon blossom provides freshness and ‘clean’ feel, but this scent is still a lush white floral. I have a decant from an old rectangular bottle and have no idea whether the modern version is different.

No Uncle Serge fragrances for me this week, as I am away from my normal cooler, dry habitat, and in already warm, definitely swampy west Florida this week for work. Just walking the mile from my hotel in the mornings, I’m a sticky mess. AdV Pelargonium was one of the things I packed for this trip, and it is light, fresh, slightly green-spicy, and delightful in the heat.

Don’t know how you Floridians manage being outdoors in July and August!

My brother and SIL moved to FL some years ago, after living in Virginia until their mid-30s. I think they do a lot of scooting from house to car, from car to office.

You know, I’ve been to Kauai in the hottest time of the year (end of July), and while it is VERY humid there and I sweated a lot, the ocean breezes reach pretty much everywhere on the lower elevations, and it is not oppressive. Florida, on the other hand — I’ve spent vacations there in July and August and was miserable the whole time.

I’m sure some people love it.

This early spring weather means I’m bringing out ALL the irises and violets. Today I’m in Apres L’Ondee, of which my decant is running dangerously low.

Checked out Frangrancenet a few days ago as suggested by some of you helpful folks. They had a tester for super-cheap… but I’m wary of a tester. Am I being too cautious?

No need to be wary of a tester (sometimes retailers will exclude a cap, though they’ll spell it out if that’s the case). Sometimes it also says “tester” on the label, but the juice is fine.

My only objection to testers is aesthetic (not having a cap.) If that doesn’t bother you, go for it. It really is a great price.

Pink Day! Who knew? I love pink, it was my trademark color in the ‘80’s.
SotD is SL Feminite Du Bois. The juice is a beautiful color, but I guess really more of a dusty pale lavender.

Yesterday my daughter bought a pair of Mom Jeans (seriously) at American Eagle. Apparently this is a thing now????? That old SNL skit was enough to make me never want to own anything that could be construed as “mom jeans.” Lol.

btw, I read yesterday you are from Wisconsin? in the early 80s I studied with Milwaukee Ballet Company and was in your state for the entire summer! sadly did not make it out of Milwaukee but wish I had…I am sure Wisconsin is a gorgeous state :)

madtownteen is a peanut, probably 95 lbs soaking wet. She started with a 2 but I had to go back out and grab her a 0. I am taller (5-9) and what some would probably consider thin (125) but on my frame it feels just right.

What part of Milwaukee were you in?! We lived in a north shore suburb for many years and moved here 12 years ago. Wisconsin is gorgeous, although I’m biased. I grew up in the northern part of the state which is heavily wooded with many, many lakes. Chicagoans flock there in the summer.

All of the ballet dancers stayed at the Y which I later found out was the seedier part of town. Honestly it was so long ago I don’t even remember the exact location! In my mind Wisconsin IS indeed gorgeous and I could kick myself for not having ventured off the beaten path when I was there.

I am eight inches shorter than you so you are as slim as I am! I have been this way my whole life…the only time I was “fat” was through three pregnancies and I had rather large babies- 7.5 lbs, 8 lbs and the last one was 9.5 lbs. After pregnancy I bounced back due to a super high metabolism.

I just went to research and apparently there were several Ys built in Milwaukee in the late 90s and early 2000s…wonder if the one we stayed at was torn down…it was old without air conditioning and we used to sleep with the windows open…depending on how the wind blew we either got whiffs from the chocolate factory or whiffs from the meat processing factory that were both nearby….the new Ys have gorgeous pools and much better amenities :)

          • madtowngirl says:
            28 February 2018 at 3:27 pm

I have a feeling you stayed at the one on North Avenue which would have indeed been in a not-so-safe part of town and proximal to the chocolate factory- where Jeffrey Dahmer worked!

          • chocolatemarzipan8 says:
            28 February 2018 at 4:54 pm

What!!!!! jeffrey Dahmer worked in that chocolate factory???? We used to take a bus that crossed over a river that passed by that factory in order to get to the Milwaukee Ballet Co. headquarters/school. And now that I think about it the horrific meat odors might have been coming from a tannery….I recollect that there were a lot of factories in the area.

          • madtowngirl says:
            28 February 2018 at 6:02 pm

Yes, he did. Disgusting, I know. I don’t think the factory is there anymore but when we lived there leaving or coming into downtown from the west, we would always get a huge aroma of chocolate and it made me sick to my stomach every time just knowing he had worked there.

Also, I’m a big fan of the current high-waisted jean trend! I just bought a pair and I am in love. So it’s not just me who thinks this is the most ridiculous trend I’ve seen in years. Here in Toronto where it’s been pretty damn cold for the past two months, you see them walking around with a $1,000+ sub-zero goose down parka, a hat, one of those monstrous blanket scarves, and a pair of blindingly white sneakers with two to three inches of exposed ankle. In the snow. Oh yeah… and no gloves so they can text. Ever heard of frostbite?

I’m having a 70’s flashback. I remember wearing pink/purple/green plaid bell bottoms with cuffs on the first day of school. Oh, and a pleather David Cassidy purse. Sixth grade, methinks? I was stylin’.

My favorite pair of bell bottoms had red and blue vertical stripes with white stars. I think I was in 2nd grade, and didn’t know any better, LOL.

Ditto to all this! Bass penny loafers! I had almost forgot about those. I insisted on needing a pair the fall I started college and I wore them all over campus with pennies tucked into them.

    HumpDay!

    1) Am in Prada Infusion D’Iris. It’s kinda perfect for today, with the rain and gray but with daffodils blooming up.

    2) Scored like 5 pairs of Supergas at Anthropologie for $100- clearance sale! All in my size (40) and all perfect for the upcoming spring and summer. Will traveling quite a bit, and these sneakers are perfect for walking about in.

    3) I made a number of sketches for the Matchbox Backyard project, and they all seem to look like it’s doable within budget. I am so excited to picking out fencing!

Wearing Aedes de Venustas from the splitmeet today. This one is a definite scrubber for me. I love all the notes listed (tomato leaf, rhubarb, etc.) but it turns into bitter lemongrass on my skin.

Anyone want 10mL with just a few sprays gone? Perhaps someone who missed the split?

I’m not sure how I feel about that one yet. It actually smells like weed to me initially, which makes me a little uncomfortable as a personal scent. My husband said that real tomato leaf smells like that to him.

I thought about getting in on that split, but hesitated a bit too long. Do you get any cumin in it? I love the notes, but have been traumatized by too much cumin in the past.

I don’t get cumin but there is a bitterness to it early on- a marijuana kind of bitter. It then morphs on me into what smells like that floral accord Duchaufour uses in Ostara and some other perfumes. It’s not really bitter at that stage to me anymore. The base has a bit of vanillic sweetness. I find it very complex and different for sure.

I’m still smelling last night’s Penhaligon’s Night Scented Stock from the anthology range update of the original by Betrand Duchaufour. It’s not especially spicy or loud but does for stocks what his Boronia does for boronia, almost as if the flowers are veiled with dust.
In the last lines of Kate Chopin’s The Awakening Edna recalls the smell of pinks.
I will switch to A la Nuit after my morning walk.

I’m wearing one of my favorite comfort scents, Safran Troublant.

The only SL I have a decant of is Chergui. I’d like to add more to my collection but I still haven’t really spent time with many of these and when I do go to the store to try them I’ve yet to find any loves.

I’m so glad we are over Feb.! The days are already getting longer and if we keep up these mild temps we very well might be able to believe the worst is behind us.

Sotd is Queen of the night, from my first splitmeet ever!
This sweet, lush, slightly tropical foral is the perfect antidote for the freezing cold!!!

I also tried Nomade today. The bottle is so cute irl! (I love Chloe clothing and bags, by the way, wish I could afford those haha)

The fragrance is a fruity floral. The fruit (plum and peach) is dominant on my skin, and two hours in I get more and more of a generic clean musk note, drowing the nice floral notes. Meh. I wish they stopped using this white (?) musk.
I think I need to try it again in warmer weather, but my guess is this is not going to work for me…ever. Too bad…bottle is lovely.

Btw I just read a review of Nomade, and I cant believe she just described it as being ‘almost masculine’, adventurous, not something she’d wear to work, and as a scent you wear when you need ‘a bit more oomph’.
Oops, maybe I need to reconsider my ‘safe for work’ and my ‘more oomph’ choices? ????

Most current Chloe scents dont work for me. Though I must say I havent tried them all. But I suspect none of them share DNA with the Chloe i used to wear in the 90s: Narcisse, a spicy flower bomb with huge sillage. My then bfriend described it as ‘very sexy’. ????

I didn’t love Nomade. Too sweet for me. I did smell the “oakmoss” in the far drydown after washing my hands. I love the bottle. I wonder if it’s suposed to be a hobo bag?

Yeah its quite sweet, almost candy-like. I also get a hint of ‘oakmoss’, but this whole ‘semi-chypre’ experience only makes me long for the real deal that is Mitsouko. ????

I think the bottle is inspired by Chloe bags? Lots of them have a similar shape, like the Nile and Drew model.

I tested Roja Dove Karenina last night, and the carnation is still around this morning, so thats the SOTD so far.

While carnation seems to be the longest lasting note, it blends in at the beginning with violet and the symphonic, vintage-like richness one expects from Roja.

To me it’s not old-fashioned; more like the young woman who adds vintage clothes to her wardrobe because she’s a bit of a romantic and they suit her.

I couldn’t find the kind of image I wanted to illustrate this perfume — but how amazing are these 19th century photos of traditional Russian costumes?

Wearing Diptyque Rose de Mai and a spritz of Philosykos EDT.

Also trying out a tiny spritz of Escentric Molecule Molecule 2 and Escentric 2 one on each hand. I wanted to compare them to Another 13, since the main note is ambroxan. I have found that I like neither of the EMs as much as the Le Labo, I think the ambrette seed really cozies Another 13 up.

Fracas today for the snow, it really sings in the cold.
I have 3 serge’s, all lovely for cold weather.
I sold lots of clothes on eBay so that I could buy an apc blouse I saw and loved last month, it’s a cross between cowgirl and victoriana, a lovely light weight Japanese denim, with a high frilled neck, and big frills on the front and back, the collar looks so nice peeping out of warm jumper’s, and I’m looking forward to wearing it on its own in the spring too.

QUESTION: does anyone know of an online source for Francis Kurkdjian Ciel De Gum? I haven’t bought a FB in ages, and am in perpetual sticker shock about it, but at the same time worry that this one might disappear. I can order it from the label itself, but am wondering if anyone here has gotten even a slight deal elsewhere? I can ship to US or Canada…

In Rose Pivoine from Parfums de Nicolai, which is, I suppose, a pink fragrance. Testing it because I’m trying to figure out if the trio set will work for me. Rose Pivoine is pretty, but I find most rose scents kind of “narrow” – not fluffy, but dense and to a point instead. Rose Royale much more so – deep and dark and green but also narrow and loud. Yikes!

SOTD = Byredo Seven Veils, from the sample stash. I, um, probably over-applied this one. MISTAKE!!! It went full out auto shop on me, right down to the smell of used motor oil, hydraulic fluid, and metal shavings. I couldn’t stand that and ran for the rubbing alcohol. I will re-test this with a much more sensible amount of perfume, since I kind of liked what was left after the sponge bath.

SOTD = DSH Scent of Hope

I am going to make up a T-shirt that says I survived Month of Irises with a picture of a fangy Rusty.

Scent of Hope is not for the faint of heart. It is the Yin to the Yang of ISM. Scent of Hope is aldehylic peachy and vegetal earthy va. carrotty.

Survey of the day – Episode 1:

A sign above a tray of food in the cafeteria – “Buffalo Meatloaf”. Is it:
    a. meatloaf made with ground buffalo meat?
    b. regular meatloaf with buffalo sauce / dressing?
    c. whatever it is, I don’t care and I don’t want to eat it?

… the answer is – I will tell you tomorrow

Would you believe she had to call the chef to ask him?!? I ended up getting the pork loin which was recognizable as such and was very good!
