Tuesday scent of the day 2/27

Posted by Robin on 27 February 2018 250 Comments

Tuesday, plus World NGO Day, International Polar Bear Day and Anosmia Awareness Day. Oh, and Pokémon Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with my old friend Serge Lutens Chêne. Tea at the moment is cold brew coffee.

Reminder: 3/2 will be Uncle Serge Day...wear something by Serge Lutens (a repeat from 2014).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Wood Grain Teapot Polyurethane bag from Akori is $98, and can be worn as a crossbody or clutch. It is also available in leather, or basketball rubber.

SOTD- St. Clair Scents Gardener’s Gloves

My nose picks up greens, tomato leaf and sueded leather…gorgeous stuff!

I am also happy to report that I have found a replacement for Sonoma Scent Studios. The aesthetics, quality and style of St. Clair Scents are extraordinarily similar to SSS. In sniffing Frost from the vial, SSS Winter Woods immediately came to mind. All three of the fragrances from this indie house are full bottle worthy to me. And the perfumer has an interesting background-

      lemming alert!

gardeners gloves sounds so good….very tempted to get the sample pack, but I am on a no buy until I get back from our Paris trip, which will probably result in further “no buying”, but dirt, tomatoes and leather :) :) :)

have you tried Rahat Loukhoum? Kanuka mentioned it yesterday as a cherry almond scent. Wondering how the Jergens quest is going?

Gardener’s Glove is gorgeous…I happen to love tomato leaf and it is really hitting the spot. In fact all three fragrances (and I really DO appreciate that only three fragrances were released versus 10 or more that many new perfume companies do) are gorgeous. Also, very long lasting on my scent eating skin. Definitely a line worth exploring.

I haven;t tried Rahat because that bell jar is beyond my budget and I am afraid to try anything I might fall in love with-LOL! Right now I am satisfying the almond itch with the body lotion that cauzabon recommended and some inexpensive South of France Marzipan soap that sits in my drawer scenting my clothes.

$140 on strawberry net for Rahat Loukoum for the nice black atomiser duo.

It’s cute that you think $190 for 60 mL makes it count as affordable :)

Ok, that said, if I WERE to fall in love with multiple SLs available in that format, I might consider keeping one of the two travel sprays and selling the other. $95 for 30 mL almost doesn’t feel ludicrous.

I would love that teapot if it were an actual pot and not a bag..

In Dior’s Mitzah. Something about this one is similar to Alahiiiine..maybe an incense note? So I sprayed Alahiiiine on the other wrist and comparing the two…

Someone on here recommended maybelline 24 hour lip colors and I am wearing one today that I adore. Thanks..

its not as good as tom tomato..haha
It lasts but a bit drying so make sure your lips are moisturized. I picked a raspberry color and it lasted through my many cups of tea this morning…

ok, that’s a pretty good recommendation…the eternal drying vs. long lasting battle….I’d like to try the pat McGrath lip stick at Sephora, but I never get there! 45 minutes on a highway I rarely travel, and if I do, my companions won’t want to stop for 2 hrs. Actually, my companions are usually my kids, so really it’s me not wanting to go in with them.

A good compromise: those balm-stain crayon things. I don’t find them to be drying but they’re not as fussy as a regular liquid stain.

Not many Lutens scents that I would consider work-friendly but Rahät Loukoum comes close: soft, sweet, almondy, with a smidge of rosewater. I don’t wear it often but I love it when I do.

No perfumes today. I had a 90 minute massage from a very good local massage therapist who uses Indian techniques as well as regular swedish and is an expert in ayurveda. He did use a nice herbal/menthol oil that I liked very much. In any case, I think he did too good a job of loosening up my super stiff neck and spine and it triggered a migraine. So I’ve been laying low all day, slept a lot through the afternoon and felt like I could barely move when I got up. I think this is a bit of a detox/healing reaction and I will be better than new tomorrow.

It sometimes means you haven’t had enough water to drink. The massage eases a lot of not-great-for-you stuff from your muscles and into your blood. You should always drink a ton of water immediately after a massage to dilute those things and to get you to pee them out quickly! (I oftenfeel hot-head-y-queasy after massages.)

Light and bright. The initial spray turned me off a bit as I got a Play-Doh vibe from it. Then it turns into a Citrus and Amber scent. Close to the skin but longevity is good. I will be wearing this quite a bit in summer nights.

Doesn’t scream but taps you on the shoulder and invites you closer.

Thanks! I sniffed the new Nest Wisteria and that was meh. Those bottles are so pretty though! I was impressed that our store had the new Tom Ford. I had the SA make me a sample of it. I tried that on one wrist and Replica’s Beach Walk on the other. The sun was out here today too and the heatwave of mid 50 temps was making me feel like I need something beachy in my lineup.
Anywho, after a few hours I was ready for them both to be gone, so I definitely don’t need a bottle of either. I’d have to be in a certain mood to reach for it and at that price I can scratch my beachy itch with Olivine Atelier’s Amongst the Waves perfume oil.

I think I have a few SL options but wasn’t in the mood for any of them today. Ended up with SHL Rose de Petra. Haven’t worn this in quite a while. Still as pretty as I remembered it but it does still have a bittersweet association. I bought it when I spent a month in LA during my mother’s illness, and it still brings me back to that era.

They are. Mostly it’s reminding me of the walk breaks I would take and it was sunny, hot, and all the lawns were brown. I didn’t have much other perfume with me so wore this almost every day. Not sure it will be reclaimed as such, but that’s ok, too. I enjoyed smelling it today, though.

In Iris Silver Mist, my favorite SL.
Question: One of my friends puts her perfume bottles in small Ziploc bags and then inside their boxes to preserve them from evaporating. However, she told me yesterday that since she started doing that around 1 year ago, she has noticed the opposite: her perfumes are evaporating very fast. She always keeps them in a cold room and in a dark cabinet. She does not have so many bottles like all of us, but a decent amount to be worried about. I usually keep samples and some decants in small Ziploc bags, but I have never experienced faster evaporation or at least I have not noticed it. Any ideas?

I’m not a scientist, but I doubt the ziploc bag is either preventing or contributing to the evaporation.

I agree. I usually place some of my decants together in bags and also many samples just to keep them more organized. I never thought that they could be preserved from evaporation that way, as you said. However, I wanted to hear other opinions just in case what I told her was wrong.

maybe the zip lock is keeping them too hot so they evaporate. maybe its better just to keep them in a cool dry spot but not air tight.

Good observation! I do not see the need of the ziplock bag for that specific purpose. I guess.

I have a question about “cool, dark place”….how cool is ideal? I mean, room temp? I keep mine in a dark place, just hoping it’s cool enough…

      • kpaint says:
        27 February 2018 at 4:04 pm

Room temp is 76F and my recollection is that the “ideal” temp is a good 10 degrees below that.

My recollection as well is that it’s severe changes in temperature that is damaging? And that direct light does more harm than any of the above…

But I have no idea where I got those ideas and may have just developed my own theories ;)

Room temp is fine. There are plenty of people who don’t have aircon and I don’t think their perfumes are turning at a rapid rate. I think sitting on a sunny windowsill probably isn’t a good idea.

Layering Jai Ose under Coco Mlle. I have a quarter inch left in each of these bottles and I’m determined to use them up!

I’m looking forward to replacing the Jai Ose with a fresh bottle (I got my current one on ebay and I think it’s turned)… but if I never smell Mlle again that will be ok with me. After 3 bottles I’ve had enough!

    SotD Fille en aiguilles.

I estimate three in my top 20 of ‘most worn fragrances’ are from uncle Serge, but there are also lots of SL’s that dont work for me.

The much admired/praised Chergui and De profundis for instance. Maybe its because of reformulations?

I really love the visual work SL did for Shiseido by the way. I remember browsing my mother’s lifestyle magazines when I was a young girl and being impressed by those arty ads! It was so different from the soft focus pink/white or glitter and gold stuff out there in those days.

Chergui turned kinda sour on my skin ????
But if it works on your skin, I can see why people love it.

I adored the opening phase of De profundis, wow, wow, wow, but it turned into a generic clean musk. Booo skin chemistry, or maybe a bad reformulation (my sample was from 2016)
But I may need a small decant one day just to experience that first glorious phase again….

This did not encourage me to explore the line any further with urgency, but I am still curious about African Leather. Have you tried that one by any chance?

Spent the morning wearing the reissued Derby and didn’t really care for it but my mother loved it. So the decant went to her. So I am commando right now and probably end up in Theorema. It’s too warm for the heavy hitters but too cold for ISM or De Profundis. So Theorema fits the bill.

SOTD is zip, zero, nada. Sorry Uncle Serge, I cant play today. l want to shut off my nose. Maybe forever. No perfume news in this post, so you can skip to the next if you like.

Gory details aside, I spent the night in the van with a very sick dog, after spending three hours at the emergency vet. Suffice it to say, I did without my sleeping bag and favorite blanket because…well, T-Rex was S I C K. The “I can’t help it mom!” kind of sick. Even the vet remarked on how ashamed she looked when she “couldn’t help it.”

So, first attempt at feeding her just now so we will wait a bit to make sure the 2 tablespoons stay down and/or don’t make a fast exit. She has a huge buffalo hump from the SQ fluids, but is looking less deformed as it slowly gets absorbed. Even while being actively sick last night, she was wagging her tail.

It was two bottles of Onda VdE to pay off T-Rex, but worth more than any perfume to see my BFF 75% better this morning. I might try some perfume tomorrow. Today, I’m going to not smell everything I possibly can????

I’m all stuffed up and can’t smell, so I’m not going to waste perfume. But, I’m enjoying learning a little about Serge Lutens. I was not familiar with him at all before FDTRH (falling down the rabbit hole)

I guess my gross connection would be that the art deco revival that I’m familiar with from the 70’s/80’s is greatly due to his influence. did any of you children of the 80’s have a Pierrot doll on your dresser? my sister did. Now I know why: Serge Lutens

i don’t know, I’m sure ebay has them :) but I think they were pretty ubiquitous on the 80’s – the kind I remember weren’t good to play with – more stiff with porcelain faces, hands and feet.

I remember Pierrots! They were definitely a thing in Germany in the mid 80ies. I have not thought about them for a long time, but I remember really wanting one (or probably many, if my own children are any reference to my former child self), and other friends having them, and their shiny silver and black suits and porcelain heads…ties in nicely with another perfume related flashback – Perfumes de Nicolai Juste une Reve reminds me of a body spray / perfume / deodorant I really wanted in the late 80ies or early 90ies. I’m not 100% sure, but I’m thinking Impulse body spray.
And whenever I hear “Pierrot”, I immediately hear this song:

SOTD: Jo Malone’s Honey & Crocus.. because I caved yesterday and bought it. Requires a minimum of 7-8 sprays, but very happy with it.
I’m actually thinking of also getting the Primrose & Rye as I like that one a lot too and I don’t have anything like it.

Finally tried Mugler’s Aura which was.. different. Its initial stages smell very much like a type of cleaner, not pleasant, but eventually, it becomes an interesting sweet floral with a tartness to it. I thought the lotion version of this was quite nice and would prefer it to the perfume. I also tried Valentino Donna Acqua (odd name as it gave no water association at all) which was very sweet but with a nice, strong almond note and lately, I’m all for almond. Need to try this on skin yet.

Loving the blue sky (finally!) out there today.

Congrats on your new bottle. Almonds, which I immediately detected in that perfume, do not work for me but Primrose one was pleasant on paper – so I might try it on skin the next time I’m at a store – if they still have it.

It’s the first time I hear anybody referring to a bell jar as “little” :)
I have a couple in my collection but at the speed I use any perfume I’m afraid to use the stopper not to deposit additional particles into the bottle. So I’m decanting those perfumes into small spray bottles. I think it defeats the purpose of owning a nice bottle but…

You can always wipe the stopper with a tissue or cloth after you use it and befire you replace it. That’s the tip the Chanel sale’s assistant gave me when I bought my Cuir de Russie Parfum.

I’m actually agree wirh Jewel that the bell jars are little. I equate the size to The Mona Lisa. With so much hype, I was expecting it to be a larger canvas but it turned out to be quite small, perfect but small.

Oh! P.S. for anosmia day. I have a coworker who once lost her sense of smell for about year after a head injury. She was a marvel to her doctors! That’s when she learned that we really don’t understand how the sense of smell works at all!

Similiar coworker story. He hit his head and lost his smell and still hasn’t gotten it back, and it’s been at least 8 years. This affects the taste too so unless it’s a very strong taste he doesn’t taste much. I can’t imagine.

Decided to save my last Lutens rose for tomorrow, so today I’m wearing Un Bois Vanille from a generous swapper. This briefly edged out Eau Duelle and Vanilla Insensee as my favorite vanilla, but was itself edged out by Vanilla Flash. No shame in being the runner-up, though.

Also, I love reading about everyone’s different SL scents! Uncle Serge was my favorite for many years (my first niche bottles were Ambre Sultan and A la Nuit) – I haven’t loved many of the newer ones, but so many of the 90s-00s releases are still just gorgeous to me.

I decided to do Thierry Mugler week. Last night was Alien essence absolue, and today is Alien sublime. It’s not really sunny enough for the Sublime today. I have two questions, 1. Why is Serge Lutens sometimes referred as Uncle Serge, and 2. Anyone have any thoughts on Guerlain Terracotta? I’m still thinking about beachy scents.

Good question about uncle serge! As to the terracotta, if you like white flowers I think it will be a hit. I did a blind buy since I was convinced it would be “the” floral for me, but no go. I swapped it away even though I loved the bottle and presentation. Disclaimer: wise peeps sample first. ????

We need a deep dive of the internet to find the first mention of Mr. Lutens as Uncle Serge. I would guess Uncle is an affectionate honorific given to him as one of the first modern niche perfumers. Somebody correct me if I’m out on the wrong limb here.

For me Terracotta is more floral, less coconut, slightly musky, very pretty vanilla. I love it.

To me, Terracotta smells like an outdoor pool in summer: tanned skin, coconut-scented suntan oil, and chlorine. Like most beachy scents I find it quite overwhelming, but I’ll wear a little dot a couple of times a year.

Oh, trying to remember if people called him Uncle Serge on MakeupAlley years ago, because I would think that would have been where I picked it up? But can’t be sure. I will say that back then, when there were FAR fewer niche lines, he was more of an object of personal adoration, perhaps, than he is now?

The first mention that I can find is on The Non-Blonde blog from August 2008 http://www.thenonblonde.com/2008/08/what-i-didnt-buy-today.html?m=0#.WpY5ynCIaEc. Gaia has blogged a couple of years by the time she started regularly referring to SL as Uncle Serge, so I’m not sure if she has coined that nickname herself or picked it up from somebody else.

Hello all. I am wearing L’Orpheline which I think of as one of the cleaner, cooler SL scents. It’s also one of the most recent ones I’ve bought. I think of this as a kind of shiny silver or chrome coloured scent and today I’m wearing a black/white geometric top with silver jewellery, so this just seemed right. I’m very much off of sweet or floral fragrances these days, not sure why. That means a lot of the SL line is on the “no” list right now. I confess though that I do own at least a dozen of them.

    (1) I would be very curious to see someone wearing that bag.

    (2) I am wearing the exquisite, but imo inappropriately named, De Profundis. (I know WHY it’s called that, and I love the name on its own, but that’s just not the association I have.) Thanks, Uncle Serge. I’m wearing it from a decant from the generous flopper, but here is the problem: is 5 mL enough De Profundis? Or am I in need of a FB? I’m not, right? Do I need a bell jar of chrysanthemum? I might. Ugh.

    (3) My brain is just not capable of chilling out this week. February has been so hectic. I need things to CALM DOWN. Perhaps I should meditate on the beauty of the perfume currently gracing my skin.

I get that beautiful inside the florist shop smell from De Profundis. It’s earthy and cool at the same time. I love that smell. I don’t have any associations with the name beyond the back story. SL seems like a dramatic character to me. I just chalk it up to the quirkiness of the perfumer.

Thanks a lot, potential enabler >.< Maybe I should just spend a lot of quality time with my decant between now and when I go to France in April, where the bell jar will cost just a fraction of what it costs here, in order to decide if you're right when you say that I need more.

    Yesterday’s SOTD = L’Heure Bleue Extract
Today’s SOTD = Atelier des Ors Iris Fauve

Oakland Fresca gave me samples of modern LHB EDT and EDP and both smelled very similar and pretty good. Emboldened by this experiment, I went ahead and bought the Extract (“Parfum” on the box). The SA included a sample of it, just in case, and it was from this sample that I wore yesterday’s SOTD. I am happy to report that LHB largely escaped disfiguring reformulation and is quite good! To my untrained nose, the modern Extract vs my 1930s LHB (not sure which formulation but too lazy to go look) have more similarities than differences and overall, I am happy with my purchase!

Iris Fauve with REAL.GOLD.FLAKES! is nice and office-friendly. I have a decant and I am glad I have it.

I have a few Commiting Woes to relate but they have to wait for another day.

Tomorrow caps off Month of Irises and I have a perfect perfume for it! For the next two weeks, I may have to wear No.19 EDP except Friday, when I plan to participate in the Community Project.
