Friday scent of the day 2/16

Posted by Robin on 16 February 2018 249 Comments

Happy Friday, and Gong Xi Fa Cai! Our community project for today: we're celebrating the Lunar New Year...wear an auspicious fragrance to ring in the Year of the (Earth) Dog.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

My tenuous link to the holiday: Madonna (yes, that Madonna), is an Earth Dog (she was born in 1958, the last Earth Dog year.) Before Madonna did her own fragrance, she wore Robert Piguet Fracas. I know where my Fracas is, which is more than I can say for my sample of Truth or Dare, if I even still have it. So, Fracas it is.

Reminder: 2/23 will be Library Friday...honor National Library Month with any sort of fragrance association you can think of.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Pure Gold One Kilogram Lunar Lotus Coin - Year of the Dog from the Royal Canadian Mint is $75,000 CAD.

Happy New Year! Xin nian kuai le!

Today I did some layering again: ELDO You or someone like you and Guerlain AA Herba Fresca. Both are green and herbal, plus ELDO has some rose, so I hope it is a good combo for the Earth Dog. :)

    Happy Lunar New Year!

Wearing CdG Kyoto. Relaxing, meditative, peaceful and beautiful! Exactly what I need to have a good year. Drinking green tea and some chinese pastries brought by a co-worker.
    Have a great Friday everyone!

    Happy New Year!

Wearing Nahema Extrait, which has little to do with dogs (though the puppy didn’t mind being belly rubbed with my Nahema-ladden wrist next to his nose) but seems like a good choice. Opulent and feminine but also vibrant and happy, is just how I would like to spend the new year :-)

I was going to wear Cartier’s Le Baiser du Dragon for its Chinoiserie but that seem kind of stereotyped, so, figuring that gold was a particularly auspicious colour in China, I went for the goldest thing I own: vintage Montana Parfum d’Elle, a golden liquid in a chrome-yellow box with an effulgently golden smell — bright and gingery up top, an armload of yellow flowers underneath, and one of the most beautiful bases any scent ever had. (I have sent decants to a few people saying, “Even if you don’t like the fragrance itself, you HAVE TO smell the drydown.”)

Happy Friday and Happy Lunar New Year.

I chose Anima Vinci’s Wood of Life because it is said to help in calming and illuminating the mind, enhancing sensuality and awakening self love. Not bad goals for the Year.

I told Reilly (my cat) it was the Year of the (Earth) Dog and she went in the Big Pink Fish and refuses to come out.

Have a calm and illuminating weekend!!

    Happy Friday!

I just bought some parafilm and want to know the best practices for using it please. I think I should be wrapping it around where the spray atomizer and bottle meet after they atomizer has already been screwed in vs. using it around the glass threads of the bottle before I screw in the atomizer as you can w/ plumber’s tape. Please weigh as you see fit to school me. ;) People seem to like parafilm based on my googling.

The first purchases of 2018 have happened! I bought an older bottle of Note Vanille on Ebay…not cheaper than current bottle but hopefully as strong and fragrant as the sample shared w/ me from a lovely NSTer.

And I finally caved on the Maison de la Vanille sampler from Luckyscent which has been in my cart forever…mostly b/c kpaint asked if I had ever tried this house and I figured the Gods were talking through her and it must be the sign to buy it! :) Ye clever Gods!

Ooh, hadn’t thought of using parafilm but I bet it works well! The only times I’ve seen it fail were cases of direct contact with really strong organic solvents. It’s not intended to be used like plumber’s tape, but it still might work – have you tried testing it w/ a little sprayer filled with rubbing alcohol?

I love parafilm, but I would think it would have too much “grab” to work well wrapped around the threads. It’s also thicker than plumber’s tape (which is intended for threads) and you might not be able to fit the sprayer over it. Worth a try though! (With an inexpensive bottle, just in case.)

I wrap it where the cap and the bottle meet, after the sprayer is screwed in and the cap is put in place. Also work wells with vials.

This is what I do too. Plumber’s tape around the threads, then parafilm around the outside of the atomizer where the cap meets the vial.

I think several older Micallefs feature this same design as shown on Fragrantica…

        https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/M-Micallef/Note-Vanillee-4334.html

To my knowledge, NV came out in 2007 then was discontinued and brought back. Luckyscent has the current bottle design.

It is the first Micallef I’ve sniffed…makes me want to try Note Ambree and Note Poudree too.

For today’s theme I chose to wear the very last dregs of my little decant of De Profundis. I’m not sure exactly why this feels “auspicious” – maybe because De Profundis evokes springtime, maybe because finishing something makes room for the new … dunno. All I know for sure is that I need more now! :)

Twins! I’m getting a distinct powdered milk chocolate note from this one – must be the patchouli? It’s sweet and pleasant, though perhaps not as assertive as I’d expect a she-wolf to be. :)

Hi twin! I agree it’s got a kind of a hot cocoa quality. Vanilla is a listed note so I wonder if that’s part of it? There’s another one called Siberian She-Wolf that I now really want to try!

It’s fun seeing everyone’s choices today! Robin, I like your reasoning and how you ended up in Fracas – you smell great!

I went with Micallef Lucky Charm — the scent itself is a bit light for my taste but the bottle may be the prettiest ever!

We received some surprise snow last night – not enough for a snow day off work, grumble grumble – but I went with something cozy, Ummagumma.
My SO has started referring to this as Hubbahubba ????.

I just realized that I can make a tenuous connection to today’s theme: Ummagumma is the title of an early album from Pink Floyd, who later released another album, Animals, that contains a track called “Dogs.” This mental gymnastics calls for another cup of tea.

Happy New Year and Happy Friday! I’m in a few drops of Miss Dior from a dabber bottle (thanks, eBay), and I smell pretty good!

Trying to stay positive, as my physical therapist thinks I could possibly have a muscle tear in my rotator cuff, from the fall I took last October. He recommended an MRI, and I might need surgery to reattach the muscle. Along with that comes sleeping in ye olde easy chair during the recovery period, and starting PT allll over again. I’m really not happy, but it is what it is, and I’ll get through it.

I hope y’all and your rotator cuffs have a great Friday! ????

Dot is a great name for a pup. I like the perfume but wish it had more osmanthus and less of a metallic edge. I haven’t found any osmanthus perfumes where I live so had hopes for Dot.

I agree, the perfume could have been more floral and less metallic, but I was so excited to have a perfume named after my sweetie (I have the Marc Jacobs one too) I bought it anyway. She is named Dot because she has 4 big black dots on her back, so the bottle design of the CdG was perfect too. :-)

Speaking of Scentbird….Yesterday, I won a 6 month Scentbird subscription and some Drybar hair products from them! I entered their Valentine’s Instagram contest and got lucky. Enter those contests y’all! Somebody’s gotta win, and it might as well be YOU! Free Scentbird until Sept 2018 is AWESOMENESS! :) Drybar is good stuff as well….

My SOTD is MH Geranium Bourbon from the last swapmeet :) This choice was partly driven by the fact that the GB box is red. I smelled pretty fabulous, but now I’m wearing a sweater and thick socks/lined boots at work, so I’m TOO HOT, and now the scent is choking me a bit. Sigh.

    Happy Lunar New Year!

It is freakishly warm here, 65F, and raining, with petrichor gloriously wafting about, and I just got done with parent-teacher conferences with Taz’s teachers at the high school. (He’s doing well.) In any case, I chose scent for the event and not for the project: Henry Dunay Sabi, gorgeous (discontinued :( ) green floral, with narcissus, tuberose and vetiver, my small decant courtesy of Haunani who used to comment here frequently. So beautiful.

Thru a little research, I found that plum blossoms and daffodils are associated with the Chinese New Year. I had to dig around to find the only fragrance I have with plum blossom- La Pairie Midnight Rain. It’s awfully sweet, which is probably why it was stored away with old former loves. ???? In a perfect perfume world, I’d be wearing (and owning) Plum Japonis. It features plum blossom and is gorgeous!

Happy new year to everyone! I am lame and back in Santal 33, which I gushed about yesterday as being the perfect office scent. Well….either I’m going crazy or I sprayed on a different Le Labo the other day (Rose 31 maybe?) – but this morning, I feel trapped in a dense cloud of perfume. Even the admin here, who often gets to share my fragrance (“here – smell this!”) doesn’t like it today but praised it the other day. Where is the head scratch emoji when you need it?

Santal is deceptive but my personsl experience with ot is that it quietly expands and can take over a large room. Which os why I bought the candle because I loke ot as an ambient scent (even the unlit candle is potent!).

I’m not sure if I have a good grasp on this weeks project. Today, I chose No. 22. My reasoning is this: the first time I smelled it, decades ago. I was bound and determined to buy a Chanel. I fell in love with it. This was when I was not quite 20 years old. 22 smelled like a grown up, with a good career, and confidence. As much as I loved it, I felt totally unworthy of it. I ended up buying Coco, which I also love, and I felt more comfortable in. I never stopped thinking about 22, but by time I decided to go for it, it was gone. ( I had no idea it became a exclusif until I came to Nst). Anyway, a famously generous Nster sent me some one Christmas, and I literally burst into tears. I’m wearing it as an auspicious scent because I hope this is the year I become the lady that is deserving of this gorgeous perfume. I might go for the new EDP version, if anyone can tell me if it’s still as wonderful.

I’m wearing No 19 EDT again today but this time vintage. I found my amazing smelling large bottle at Goodwill for $30 last year. I think that was quite auspicious. I’ve also come to realize that No 19 is a perfume that I feel most like myself when I wear. That’s a really great revelation to have.

On a side note I’m proud of myself for making more thoughtful perfume buying choices. I had two opportunities to purchase perfumes that in the past I thought I needed bottles of. I tried on both perfumes again and decided I don’t like them as much as I used to. I used to quickly snatch up any deal right away and sometimes regretted it later.

Yes, I know I never want to be without No 19. And it helps me with the age old dilemma “if the world is ending and you’re evacuating your home, what do you grab on your way out?” ????

Huge congrats on the perfume buying restraint. I go in phases; sometimes I can be very disciplined and then there are these waves that come over me where I’m in buy-everything mode. I’m not sure what causes which but I would like to figure it out. You have every right to be proud of deciding to pass on those two bottles!

    1) Am in Tam Dao, which is so fresh and grounded, piney sandalwood goodness.

    2) This means DONUTS and LONG NOODLES- Blue Star donuts in fact, and long noodles at Frank’s Noodle house. The noodles are HAND PULLED, yo, fresh before your eyes!

Good morning, all. I’m here! I’m glad! Yesterday, I tried to tell you How Titus Nearly Caught a Bird, and I kneecapped myself on the corner of the coffee table, but the site wouldn’t let me post. No matter. The story wasn’t really very funny, though the lump on my knee still hurts. Anyhow…my choice for today is the earth-green-and-water scent of L’Ombre dans L’ Eau. Maybe this isn’t quite earthy enough for the project, but I find it very grounding, and though the perfumes aren’t alike, I find it evokes the same reaction in me as Bel Respiro. It’s the sensation of being in a quiet, damp garden where man6 gentle smells blend easily into a single impression. For some reason, they both feel like dawn to me.

Today is V-Day. The purrs visit our wonderful vet for their vaccination boosts and Eric’s checkup. I hope she feels they’re all bonny and we’re doing well by them!

    Be well, all.

I feel confident that the Fursome Balls of Doom and Destruction are getting the best of care in your hands. I saw an advert for a tote bag the other day that I think you (and I) might need: “I work hard so my cats can have a better life.”

Oh, yes, perecty! I’m anxious at the moment because they aren’t eating much— they toy idly with a plate of beef and bunny, topped with EVSB (Eric’s Very Special Biscuits). When they let it sit and seems a little spoiled, I talk to them severely about the many purrs in the world who would be very pleased indeed to see a plate of high-grade protein tasting of prey, but they just look down their long noses and wander off. The proof of all my fretting will be on the scales: the question of the day is,”Has Eric tipped over 3.75kg yet?” The stripes are no real concern at all.

Fille en Aiguilles is my SOTD as I clean up the mess of things that accumulate around my favorite chair. Books, magazines, clipped coupons, glasses (3 pair), glasses case, earrings, a necklace, lens cleaner, a dog brush, dental floss, emery board….Okay, I am stopping now as I realize I am embarrassing myself. Perhaps my Chinese New Year resolution is to put things back when I am finished with them, rather than putting them on the side table or on the floor next to the chair.

No perfume for me yet, I’ve lacked the imagination for this week’s theme, and am most impressed with the ideas you have come up with. We’re going to a first birthday party for a great-nephew this afternoon, so I’m trying to think of something festive. Possibly my recent acquisition of Fate.

I’m also eagerly awaiting the discovery set from Fort and Manle. The brand had slipped my notice till recently, when I tried a sample from Luckyscent. Suleyman le Magnifique is very nice and, when I discovered it’s an Australian company, I thought I should investigate further – it’s good to support one’s neighbours :)

Yes, because there’s that not-quite-suburban perfume shop (Purple? Paisley? Peony?) that carries quite interesting stock, but in which I always feel I am only doubtfully fit to breathe the air (it’s metred, I think) and Hermes, and your new discovery, Gaynor, and gazillions of goodies. And the art centre, and often good ballet, and that arcade where they sell bow ties and matching handkerchiefs (I don’t want either, actually, so I don’t know why I mentioned it, except that the colours are soooooooo pretty).

Trying Wicked Love today, thanks to Sephora for sample. Love the green bell pepper in this one. Very green and I’d say in the same vain as L’Ombre Dans L’Eau but rose is softer as it also adds jasmine and hyacinth.
Took a mental health day today and just now enjoying a coffee & butter cookies via a local bakery. Popped in J.Crew and so uninspired by their latest looks. Blah. I miss Jenna Lyons already.

Hello NST! To those of you celebrating the Lunar New Year, may you have a prosperous and healthy new year! Happy Friday, too.

I wanted to wear my dankest, earthiest, funkiest patchouli scent today (for Earth Dogs, of course) but decided not to. Someone was coming over to the house to measure the bathrooms for the tub renovations, and I figured I’d be nice and not fume them out.

SOTD = Tauer Une Rose Chypree, from the sample stash, and a lovely NSTer. This blooms wonderfully in cool rainy weather. No ands, ifs, or buts, URC is definitely a cool to cold weather fragrance. Or at least, that is what it is telling me.

SOTD has been Carthusia “Numero Uno”.

    Top: orange, eucalyptus and bergamot;
    Mid: patchouli, violet, ylang-ylang, artemisia, thyme and cubeb pepper;
Base: musk, vetiver, myrrh, labdanum and woody notes.

The sprayer leaked a tiny amount during travel, enough to dissolve the ink on the label I’d written. I’ve eventually worked out what it at was by remembering my actions when packing. And not, for example, because it is in any way memorable or distinctive. :^D

Started the week in Jesus del Pozo “Noble Nights Musk”, which is a nice cozy evening scent but didn’t work as a SOTD. Then Tue-Thu was a blast through Timothy Han, “Decay of the Angel”, “She Came to Stay” and “On the Road”. I liked the last of the three, probably because it smells like one of my BeauFort London scents, and by the same token I don’t need it. The other two were too ‘dirty-smelling’ for me (and I don’t think I mean skanky).

Sad to say SAC Perfumes of Malaga is no more. Although they wouldn’t have made their fortunes on my perfume spending this year TBH. TOMK and I are over just for the weekend to see if we can negotiate an acceptable price for renovating our apartment with the initial people we have spoken to. I don’t really want to go looking for another team, but need to push on the cost a bit.

    SOTD = Papillon Angelique

I’m continuing Month of Irises with Undina and friends.

I am going for a two-fer connection with dogs ????

✅ Papillon is a type of dog

And now you need to indulge me on the 2nd connection —

My dad and one of my uncles decided to get 2 dogs from the same litter. They had a German Shepherd dad and a Chow-Chow mom, resulting in dogs that look like GSDs shape-wise from the body on up, with 4 stubby legs supporting each. We got the one with black and brown markings while my uncle got a white one with black splotches. Now, we have cousins from another uncle (oldest out of 10) who were much older and closer in age to the youngest uncle. Anyway, one of these older cousins married this prissy woman whom none of the cousins liked. The white dog had a similar personality and we (yes, we got a vote even though the white one was not ours) named her after this prissy woman (we changed a vowel and shortened it by 1 syllable). Fast forward several years and cousin and prissy wife had kids, one of whom they named Angelique! I told you there was a dog connection ????????????

    Do I get ????✅✅ ?
