Friday scent of the day 2/2

Posted by Robin on 2 February 2018 319 Comments

Happy Groundhog Day! Our community project for today: assemble some winter- and spring-appropriate samples in a bowl, pick one at random, then tell us if spring will be early or late this year.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I did this project with a bowl of Hermès travel sprays. I wasn't sure if I would cheat if I got the wrong answer, but I picked Muguet Porcelaine so I didn't have to. Punxsutawney Phil says six more weeks of winter, but what does he know?

Reminder: 2/9 will be Broadened Horizons Friday...wear a fragrance you initially thought was too [insert adjective] for you to wear. Suggested by Geordie.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Winter is here, too late as usual so I celebrate/mourn in Nuit de Noël. Eau de Toilette, but I’d say its as rich as any parfum.

I am wearing Robert Piguet Blossom, paw-picked by my cat, Kora. Kora (Kore, Cora) is one of the names of Persephone, who, as you all probably know, is a goddess associated with springtime and change of seasons. It seemed rude not to ask for her help in today’s project. (I know – very geeky and catladyish).
I prepared eight samples – four winter scents and four spring ones) and put treats next to them. Not only she picked one of the spring ones (Blossom) first, she then chose the other three spring samples, and only then ate the treats next to four winter scents. Maybe it’s because cats have sensitive noses and she preferred lighter scents, but I would like to think that she definitely promised us an early spring. ????

No, she is indifferent to them. Her thoughts on what happened today were probably: “Humans are weird. But as long as I get treats…”

She looks like a gorgeous little mini-panther!

Auto correct wanted to change that to “high-quality” panther, and I’m sure she’s that, too. :-)

Six more weeks?! Ugh. We are at a solid 1F right now.
Every winter my dh asks me why we live here. Well…because we grew up here, our families are here, we work here, the kids go to school here…you get the idea. Five months from now we will be canoeing some glorious evening and remind ourselves how lucky we are to live here.
I’m intentionally cheating today (sorrynotsorry) and going with the eternally spring-y Bergamote 22.

    Happy Friday!

Wiarton Willie says six more weeks of snow, but what do whistlepigs know, anyway?

I randomly ended up with SL Gris Clair…., which one on the one hand is a cool ashy lavender but on the other hand is warmed with smoke and tonka, so it could be either winter or spring. The upside is that I smell great. I don’t know why I don’t own a full bottle.

I ended up in Caron Tubereuse Parum. Which could go either way, I guess, but it smells “warmer” to me than not; no cold mentholated note as in Tubéreuse Criminelle, at any rate.

Nearly fainted yesterday when I opened my natural gas bill for January. Six more weeks of winter might just kill me.

We have electric heat. The plant is no more than 30 miles from my house, so electricity is relatively cheap here compared to the rest of the country. Nevertheless, the January bill was $481, about 70% higher than average. :(

Our winter utilities are a beast too, but we have a hybrid system with some electric and a “wall” furnace (Rinnai) that runs on LP, and that saves our bacon. Electricity is very expensive in the part of PA where I live. There are months the rest of the year where our transmission costs are higher than our usage fees.

Calling in spring from Staten Island–sampling After the Rain from Solstice Scents which is a pretty floral with some dirt. Of course, waiting outside in Manhattan for my bus to Boston in cold windy weather with boots, hat, fleece tights and a down coat, it’s hard to believe. Also, I kind of wish that I was wearing a more weather appropriate perfume

It’s 5° here. According to Accuweather the “real feel” is -10. I am not happy. The house has a permanent chill. Mr. Lucy and I have been having a back and forth of “We have to go somewhere, I can’t take it anymore”…”We can’t afford to go on vacation”…”Screw it, let’s just head south.” We take turns on each side of the argument. Unfortunately, he had ankle surgery just before Christmas. He graduates from his cast to a walking boot on Monday…until he can walk, we’re not going anywhere.

I threw all of my samples in the bowl. SOTD is Prada Candy, which I consider a winter scent. I’m wearing it with a scowl on my face. :)

It’s blowing snow here, with a wind chill temp of 13F. School was canceled in our county and the ones surrounding us.

I ain’t gonna lie, I completely blew off the challenge today and went with Amouage Memoir Woman. Six more weeks of winter.

The only reason we didn’t have a snow day today is because there have already been so many the school decided to brave it out. The weather here today is miserable! Amouage Memoir Woman is definitely a good choice – there’s tuberose in there, right? That’s “summer” wrapped up in a thick leathery coat!

I feel guilty but it’s going to be a very pleasant 70 degrees here today — just like yesterday — and I know we need lots and lots of precipitation. It already feels like Spring. I went with Yatagan but not for any seasonal reasons.

That said, everything is very green around where I am (South and East Bays), so I am surprised we still need some rain! I guess we always need some rain, huh?

The best place for anyone to live is the local public library.

As an aside: after having lived in the PA boonies for many years now, the real prediction for spring to arrive is when the skunks come out of their dens. When you start smelling skunks, spring is on the way. God only knows why they ever picked a groundhog, but I’m all for Phil since he is a PA kind of institution.

I find it really addictive and fun. It’s tart, sweet, salty, and a little creamy all at the same time. I smell mostly strawberry and tart cherry and it smells pretty natural. Longevity has varied but it’s on the shorter side. Might be better if I could apply more than a small sample spritz. I’ll probably order a travel spray-too inexpensive to pass up. I’m really impressed with everything I’ve tried from his line! The new Bourbon EDC is also nice-warmer weather weight version of the extrait.

I put 5 samples for each season in a drawstring bag this morning, and drew Meditterosa’s Architepo, so it’s Winter for the Win! Seriously, though, we are in desperate need of some snow here along the Front Range of Colorado, or we are going to be facing a potentially serious fire season this summer ????.

Architepo is one I’ve looked forward to sampling, and it’s rather striking. It’s a bone-dry, resinous, lightly smoky, woody-fir scent, with an amber warmth in the background. I will definitely be draining this sample dry!

    SotD = Hiris

The pictured groundhog reminds me of a rather grumpy someone who wants the world to go their way no matter what. ;)

Wanted to play along today, so I put two identically-packaged Parfums DelRae samples in a teacup — Wit for spring and Mythique for winter.

I jostled them about, reached in without peeking, and pulled out Wit. I look forward to wearing it soon.

    Go Team Spring!

Bad news from this groundhog. I assembled:

    Winter:
    Lampblack
    Dead of WInter
    Norne
    Zibeline
    Thundra
    Casmir

    Spring:
    Siovohle Lemon Rain Flower
    Dasein Spring
    PdE Yuzu Fou
    Moss Gown
    Blue hope
    Parfum de Therese

And I drew Thundra. I haaaate the opening of this – which I would describe as “bloody mushrooms” – but the drydown is a nice, comfortable patchouli with a little galbanum.

But, if we’re going to talk seasonal signs, here’s a good one! In November I ordered a mini of Theorema from Azerbaijan, and gave up hope on it sometime in December. It finally arrived last night! I’m taking that as an omen that while winter will last a while longer, it will be rich and good.

This was a stressful project for me, because If you didn’t know, I hate winter. Also, I’m superstitious and sometimes I think I’m magic???? so, basically I had to cheat. Sotd is Bond no. 9 Central park West. Suffering the cheating consequence sitting in a snow shower. 13 degrees.

I pulled Dzongka from my sample bowl, which I consider a winter scent. Sorry!

I really like this scent, but I can’t imagine using up a full 100 ml bottle. I wish those 15 ml sprays that existed before I started collecting perfume were still around – that would be just perfect.

Yes — I have not used up enough of my Dzongkha! 15 ml would have been about right. That said, back when they made the 15 ml bottles, I did drain & have to replace a couple.

Yay, I pulled spring! My iris choices were Feu Secret for winter and No. 19 parfum for spring. I was really more in the mood for No. 19 so I’m glad that’s what I selected. Really, anytime I wear any concentration of No. 19, I wonder why I don’t just wear it all the time. I always want to have some in my collection.

SOTD is the naked bee lotion in orange blossom honey, which I found in one of the hospital tower gift shops. Orange blossom is not my favorite but I really like this one- light, sparkly, and it’s whispering in my ear “SPRING!”

Such a long week. Got a call Monday that my love’s grandma was in ICU with the flu and pneumonia and was very critical so we booked plane tickets at 11:00 and was at the airport by 1:00. Spent the week in WV at the hospital. She’s still in ICU but more stable than she was at the beginning of the week so we flew back yesterday. I’m back at work today and exhausted.

I DID manage to both remember AND participate in the project today. I just closed my eyes and grabbed a sample out of my sample/decant box and ended up with DS & Durga Italian Citrus. I think it’s very nice (though not so nice I’d buy a bottle) and obviously more suitable to spring or summer- so take that Phil! TGIF!

Many wishes for her continued improvement. Very scary. We just got urgent emails from work re: the rampant flu this year. Mostly threatening workers who refuse to get vaccinated and aren’t wearing the mask they have to wear at work instead, with suspension. It’s serious this year. We’re also not allowed to show up to work if we have flu-like symptoms, which alleviates guilt some people have with calling in sick and feeling like they have to push through it. I think all work places should share this policy.

Agreed. I get vaccinated every year, regardless of what the naysayers say. We wore masks the whole time at the hospital in WV (it’s bad, so it was their policy- in addition to no children under 12 visiting at the hospital) and I have never washed my hands so much in my life. When we got to the airport yesterday I actually wished I’d grabbed some masks at the airport to wear on the plane. She is 91 and it has taken her down so quickly…

I’m all for people staying home when they’re sick, regardless of the field they’re in, though I know it’s not always an option. But I’ve worked with far too many people who make it a point of pride and pat themselves on the head for showing up feeling like hell and back.

On me, however, it’s turned out to be burning meat and rubber – leaving me concerned that we may be headed for neither Winter nor Spring, but possibly for the Apocalypse. Whoops!

Oops! Forgot about the CP. Where I live spring is indistinguishable from winter and fall, but even more miserable as it just prolongs the interminable dreary weather until some sun arrives (usually in July.) So read nothing into the fact that I was reminded of Chanel No 19 edp this morning, and is what I’m wearing now.

Is there a word for smelling something without olfactory input? You know how you can smell something in your head purely from memory, or some other brain activity, not because you are actually, physically smelling it? Anyway, that’s what happened this morning. I got an internal whiff of something entirely imaginary, realized it was Chanel No 19, and that’s why I’m wearing it. :)

Oh, and on a different note – we went to the symphony last night (I was luxuriating in Misia as usual) and two couples – to the left and front of us – were grumbling about perfume and how the symphony hall is supposed to be a “perfume-free zone.” When the performance ended and the standing ovation and applause were just dying down, the couple to our left both started screaming at us to get a move on and out of the way. Like at the top of their lungs yelling. Apparently an evening of Elgar and Rachmaninoff is not for relaxation and rejuvenation for some people, but more like being stuck in traffic. 0_0

Sorry to hear about your fussy neighbors at the concert!

And yes, there is a word for that olfactory hallucination: phantosmia. I loooove when that happens, though I often have a hard time placing the scent.

Strangely, it’s also common in migraine auras and seizures to smell smoke.

I would have told them they should have left at intermission so as not to be inconvenienced by other paying symphony goers who like to show appreciation for a great performance and then just continue to stand there and clap. Or yell back with WHAT? I CAN’T HEAR YOU and keep clapping.

If that’s a normal-sized groundhog, I don’t ever want to meet one in the wild. It looks like it could take me down.

I had every intention of participating in today’s project but I was sidetracked by Box of Eels, and I could not refuse the siren’s song. I wear it all year so it’s not winter or summer to me, and the weather here is no help, either. It’s brightly overcast and in the fifties. Could be spring, but no, the calendar says winter.

    And the winner is …

Wow, what this is telling me is that I need to try Volutes EDT. (The EDP gives me a bit of a headache, but if they’re THAT different….)

I may wear the EDP tomorrow but I definitely prefer the EDT.

Yikes! I’m guessing the driver was unfamiliar with the area. I’ve nearly done similar things in strange places.

I also prefer EdT but do not mind EdP as well.

Yesterday on my way to work a big truck that was behind me changed lanes and cut me off because the driver was in a hurry/angry (for a while we were both stuck behind a car that just didn’t want to turn right on red – even though it was allowed). Anyway, the truck was really rude to me without a good reason but I couldn’t help laughing when right after it passed me, it had to stop on the red signal and after that drive REALLY slowly behind some machinery for the road work that turned from the side road in front of it. I hope he saw me laughing in his rare view mirror.

What a fuzzy groundhog in that picture! He must be all fluffed out because he’s cold.

I grabbed My Own Private Teahupo’o by A Lab of Fire. Actually I have more than a sample of this, but I still have the sample that I got a little while back, so thought I could include that in my random samples. I’m not counting on spring-like weather arriving any time soon where I live, but at least for today I can have a little hope!

I am not a fan of groundhogs. We have many who live nearby, and they love to sharpen their enormous teeth by gnawing on the wood frames of our garage. No way to trap them all. They just keep coming back.???? Not to mention they are HUGE! Much bigger than our small dog. End of rant.

Whoa, that groundhog looks like he’s having a bad day! I wonder what he saw…

I’m happy in Organza Indecence today, from a 15ml partial bottle from the bay. I bought it as backup, and luckily it smells just as great as my original bottle, a blind buy, also from eBay.

I’m *ducking* as I say this, but I could do with a little more winter weather. The temp has been hovering around 70 degrees all week, and it’s not looking like we’re getting any more frigid weather this season. Waaaaah! I still have winter perfumes to wear! ????

Yeah, it’s about the same here. I hardly get to wear some of my winter perfumes because we get so little cold weather. I wouldn’t mind the mild winters so much if it weren’t for the brutally hot, long, hot, humid, hot, enervating, hot summers that we get. Did I mention that our summers are hot?

Ha! So your summers are hot, huh?

I ordered some vanilla-centric samples a couple of weeks ago, thinking I had time to test them. I guess I’d better get on the stick.

I totally agree. I am loving the great weather in San Diego but would need a two week cold snap to wear my deep winter favourites. But I am biding my time, because I have to go back to Montreal on April 7th and it will be plenty cold there for many weeks, my opportunities will come.

I picked Copal Azur today, which is kind of a confusing scent for this CP! It’s got oodles of incense and cardamom, which makes it wintery (yuck). On the other hand, it’s got notes of salt and ozone (neither of which I can actually smell, but whatever, fragrantica is never wrong), which make it summery. Also, “azure” is just such a summery word. Well, (winter + summer)/2 = spring, right? So I guess my perfume is leaning springward!

Hello, NST! I picked 4 perfumes for Spring and Winter and wrote their names down on little pieces of neon green paper. Then I put the pieces of paper into a small box, shook the box, and drew today’s SOTD.

    Team Winter:
    Angel Muse EdP
    Womanity Les Parfums de Cuir
    Youth Dew Amber Nude
    Mitsouko EdP

    Team Spring:
    vintage Diorissimo
    Seville a la Aube
    Apres l’Ondee
    Soivohle Lilacs & Heliotrope

Alas, I am agreeing with Punxsutawney Phil. 6 more weeks of winter with Angel Muse. At least I smell good.

I have two small bottles of vintage perfume that I bought recently from eBay–Jovan Frankincense and Myrrh and Jovan Modern Flowers, which I decided would be good representations of winter and spring. They are the exact same size and shape, so I put them in a bag, shook it around, reached in, and pulled out the first one my hand touched. It was Frankincense and Myrrh. I am not overly thrilled with either of my purchases. The F&M in particular smells “incomplete” to me, as if perhaps it has lost all its top notes. Consequently, I wore SSS Winter Woods today.
