Thursday scent of the day 12/28

Posted by Robin on 28 December 2017 205 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday, and happy birthday to Nichelle Nichols. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Bruno Fazzolari Feu Secret. It was one of my favorite new fragrances last year, plus, it's a perfect scent for the freezing temperatures we're having at the moment.

Reminder: on 12/29 we're doing Best of 2017...wear one of your favorite fragrance releases of 2017.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

On my way to a meeting and the trains are running very slow. Patience! Wearing 2 sprays of Caron Parfume Sacre for beauty and comfort on a terrifying cold and super windy day. Stay warm everyone!

SORD is another 2017 release by ELDO – You or Someone Like You. Minty, green, aromatic, floral. Very fresh. Did anyone else get blackcurrant from this scent? I can distinctly smell black currant.

Much of the ELDO is massively on sale now at Sephora- 1.6 oz is $58 BUT there is also a 20% sale on sale items with a code that is listed on the website (might be SALEONSALE) which bring the bottle to somewhere in the 46 dollar range. The Histoire de Parfums are also on sale and 20 percent off with code. And a few of the Philosophy fragrances (Pure Grace 2oz with 8 oz body lotion and shower gel and the Sweet Cream mini is half price)

Stay warm Robin! We had those freezing temperatures yesterday, today we will warm up into the teens. Lol.
I am trying Twilly again today. It is definitely more wearable for me than Gabrielle was, but I probably don’t need to own it. Even with that uber cute bottle.

Has anyone tried any of the perfumes from Art Meets Art? I read about the line recently on the Byrdie website. Their perfumes are named after songs and I am particular curious about Like a Virgin and Sexual Healing. I ordered a sample set and got word that they shipped yesterday. 6 samples for 9 bucks plus free shipping caused me to break my no-buy samples rule.

Currently 84F here with a chance to getting all the way up to 90 later on.
Clear skies and low humidity (which is very rare for Buenos Aires)

I will be wearing my mix of La Pausa with an extra couple of sprays of Aveda Pure-formance.
The aveda works wonders in high temperatures even though it is a spicy thing… I guess it is because it lacks vanilla, tonka or any similar thing.

With this heat lately these have been two-showers a day days… so maybe something different at night? Perhaps my Brin de Reglisse which is so soothing and calm.
    Cheers!!

Feu Secret= I must try, especially because Lucky Scent said it was similar to VCA Bois d’Iris.

It’s too cold to get off the couch so the couch is my new staging area for life. ( I should stop the drama, It’s only 41 degrees, barely cold to Northerners). SOTD is Grand Soir.

41 is practically balmy! It’s currently 15F here.

I can’t understand it as well.
I’m not saying it because I personally like it but rather because it seemed like a very good mass-appeal perfume. If it was for me, I’d have disappointed many other perfumes before this one.

Really good question. Seems like anything that could become a new classic gets discontinued these days. Or badly reformulated, as I’ve heard rumors of with Alahine … which would be supremely sad. I suppose I prefer discontinuance over bad refo, but it’s a tough call.

Quite chilly here atm, but supposed to warm up to 28F later today. I am at the tire place getting the slow leak of my rear passenger tire looked at, and wearing PG Un Crime Exotique from an old sample.

Really nice stuff, but I notice that hardly anyone mentions PG these days. Out of fashion? Or we’re all just overwhelmed by the sheer number of perfume houses and perfumista interest is less concentrated now?

I’ve owned lots of PG fragrances over the years, but sadly, they seem to be discontinuing many of the best ones – Un Crime Exotique, Bois de Copaiba, Bois Blond – and I haven’t enjoyed their ‘updates’ to some of their older scents as I’d hoped. I wish they’d have just kept around the good ones instead of doing updates to some of the others! I’ve swapped away a few from the original line that I wasn’t wearing much anymore – Aomassai, Cadjmere, Musc Maori, L’Eau de Circe – but I still have, enjoy, and occasionally wear, Bois Naufrage, Iris Taizo, Indochine, and Djhenne.

Pierre Guillaume has multiple lines in play, in addition to PG, and I wonder sometimes if diversifying to that extent has undermined the PG line.

I kind of thought that myself about him and his multiple lines. I get a sense of restlessness from the way he expands, reworks, and releases his perfumes. Nothing has quite spoken to me from his vast array of choices.

You might be right on his multiplied lines. Especially since some of the newer ones seem to be takes on the older ones. I dunno. Sigh.

I think his line is too big and my favourites were the earlier releases. Plus, there are just too mant releases to keep up with in the perfume world in general.

In addition to other explanations provided, I want to mention that this line isn’t well represented in the U.S. While in older times most of niche perfumes got sampled through buying samples online or exchanging them with other perfume lovers, nowadays with so many niche and high-end mainstream perfumes available in different stores, those that are not easily available have to be hyped up significantly by others to persuade people to seek them out. PG isn’t new or interesting any longer – they are just harder to get, which isn’t enough any more.

I have PG Cuir d’Iris and love it, but admit I haven’t tried others from that house. A lot of their fragrances are extraits – I wonder if that holds people back from trying (or liking) them.

Agree with all of the above. One bother is that few places in the US carry the smallest sizes. But mainly I have found that the new releases are very short lived on me, so even when I like them, I am not tempted to buy. I don’t like things to last forever and ever, but more than an half hour!

I spritzed some Byredo Rose Noir on the back of my neck (my go-to spot with a nursing 3-month old) from a swap decant. Something about it reminds me of Coco Mademoiselle, for some reason. Maybe there’s sweet patchouli? Anyway, it’s pretty but not a scent that would rise to the top of my Rose collection.

I really liked the early part of that one but I didn’t like the drydown. I got patchouli, but the dry, dusty type.

2017’s Velvet Haze. When I sniff the wrist where I applied it, I can’t smell it at all but I keep getting the occasional whiff at random moments. It’s unspectacular but nice. It would be good for situations where you don’t want to make a big scent statement.

I’m continuing my unofficial ‘Week of DSH’ and wearing Mata Hari, which I finally purchased last weekend; it’s been on my wish list since I first sampled it a few years ago. Dawn originally created this one as her entry in the Natural Perfumers’ Guild’s ‘Outlaw Perfume Project,’ a poke in the eye to IFRA that challenged indie perfumers to create fragrances containing natural oils that have been declared hazardous and either barred or severely restricted in their use. Originally this was an extremely limited edition fragrance, but it proved popular enough that Dawn added it to her regular lineup. Because it contains all botanical essences, it is slightly more expensive, but the availability of her new 10 ml roller ball pens, and the holiday discount, made me decide that it would finally be mine :-)

Dawn asked me when I last tried Mata Hari, and then told me that her latest batch smelled a bit different from my last sampling, because the osmanthus absolute she sourced for this latest batch was exceptionally potent. She then let me sample the latest batch, and wowza, the osmanthus really did leap to the front of the line in a way I’d never experienced the note before: very much darker-fruitier and sweeter. Within a few minutes, however, the osmanthus settled down into a softer, chewier apricot interwoven with all the fruity chypre goodness of oakmoss, labdanum, and light patch, touches of myrrh and immortelle, and lightly animalic notes of styrax. There are tons of other naturals in here as well, but those are the notes that play up on my skin. Perhaps because I purchased this in the roller ball pen instead of a spray, this fierce little number stays surprisingly close to my skin, and I’m wearing it right now at work without any worries that it is too strong. It is a really glorious piece of art.

Oh, and note to IFRA: I’m not anywhere near death from wearing it (this 100% botanical outlaw has caused me exactly zero sensitivity or reactions, thank you very much).

SOTD is Zoologist Elephant. I got this and Camel samples at the same time and was so excited I tried both at once. They are far too different and it was a hot mess. This has the dryness of Rhinoceros (which I love) with a sharp floral. Interesting.

So, yesterday, arrived at work and the first thing out of the night nurse’s mouth was: “I’m not trying to be creepy but you smell REALLY good!”

When did a compliment become creepy? I have no clue, but I told him “Thank You! Never creepy to say something nice.”

On the other hand, I walked into a patient’s room who I thought was sleeping, snoring to beat the band, and I quietly walked up to the computers station in the room, and he says without opening his eyes, very Hannibal Lecter like, “I can SMELL you” in a very sing-songy voice. Now that’s creepy. ????

Another pt who was encephalopathic said to me (mind you, he had been my or for 8 hours prior to this comment): “Hey, you finally got yourself together! You get your hair did? It looks real good!”

Good thing my self esteem is not based on others. Life is funny and terrifying, by turns.

Smell Well, all and Happy Almost Friday Day.

I just realised that 2017 is almost over and my last year’s resolution to wear a dress has only a couple more days to be made a reality. I last wore a dress in July 2012 ( a spectacularly awful and memorable day) so it’s one of my annual resolutions that I always miss. Epidor is a definite ‘dress’ kind of perfume.

SotD = Caron Bellodgia from a sample vial.

The carnation note is breathtaking. I came across Bellodgia while looking for a community project scent. Found Bruma, La Sillage Blanc, and Grand Soir as tomorrow’s possibilities.

In a few hours I will smell like a bakery. Today we bake cinnamon rolls at my mum’s house with all her grandchildren. Each child makes their own tray of cinnamon rolls in whatever design they want. Wreath and snowman shapes are favorites. The kids decorate what they’ve baked with icing and candies. Fun stuff.

Morning. YAWN. uh…let me start again. Good morning. I’m late, because yesterday we decided quite suddenly to drive home a day early. The weather changed in Whanganui to the point that painting was impossible, and we thought about traffic leading up to the long weekend, and started packing the car. I’m not sure we even formally discussed and decided—we just seemed to know each other’s minds. Got home about 8.30, which isn’t even late, but we were still tired. This time the kits made us pay for the dreadful thing we had inflicted on them. Eric wouldn’t purr: he was merely polite if I picked him up. The other two just avoided us with high-speed take offs.

We seem to have been forgiven this morning. Alexander and I are enjoying a cuddle, coffee and Coromandel, an alliterative serendipity for this slow start to Friday. He bestowed his presence on me very gravely, as though presenting me with a bouquet after I opened a Fete, or something…where did that very 1950s thought come from? I must be channelling my mother in some long-forgotten way. Eric has a very long blue bootlace that is fighting back when he tries to subdue it. He has had to be disentangled twice already. Titus is sitting on the top shelf of the hot water cupboard in a den he has made. I have news for him later, and it’s all bad….life is normal here, then.

My time away has taught me to really appreciate my perfumes. Taking the wrong selection and not wanting to wear them makes me pleased with my deeper, warmer choice today. Ah, Chanel. I drift faithlessly through the perfume world, but in my heart, I love you best…be well, all.

Yes, the apartment and Auckland are home still, but only for a while. I spoke to a tradesman in Whanganui about putting a new roof on the house, so that we can get rid of the old, worry-in-an-earthquake tiles. Hmmm….I might have to work for a couple of months longer for that little indulgence. No, the truth is, I can settle anywhere, but at the moment, with the house still full of my m-I-l’s furniture and STUFF, and nothing of mine, plus her disapproval of anything I re-arrange, Whanganui feels more like camping than being at home. This will change, and I will love the house and my new life when we get to that stage. In the meantime, I have a busy life here, and that’s fine too. For a bit.

Chanel. Yes. I don’t love all their perfumes to FB point, not even in the Exclusifs range, but even the ones I don’t want to wear say something coherent to me about life. Chanel really is my point of balance down here in the rabbit hole. However, inspired by all the mention of Ummagumma, and in line with my habit of sleeping around in the perfume world, I have found that Bruno Fazzolari will post to NZ, so I’ve ordered a set of samples. Something to share when you come up to Ak, which I hope will be soon. Dare you to wear a dress…

Our unseasonably cold weather continues – we had such lovely weather leading up to the summer holidays, but it’s a distant memory now. I’ve had a week off, with another week still to go, which is quite a blissful thought. I’m sitting on the couch contemplating the day and testing a tiny drop of Guerlain’s Cuir Beluga. It’s still too sweet and vanilla, but at least I knew what to expect this second try.

I hope everyone in the cold parts of the US is keeping warm, we’ve been looking at footage of the snow in disbelief.

You’re telling me the weather in unseasonable! It was only 11 in Whanganui yesterday, and windy with it. We’d call that the bottom end of a nice winter’s day normally.

We drove home to 19, but the wind is high here too.

It’s warming up here so I am doing end-of-year chores like cleaning the compost bin and corralling tax papers. I’m wearing Un Bois Vanille.

I was looking at the Basenotes list of 2017 releases and saw that Star Trek had released “Uhura” this year. Too bad I don’t have any. Also, I noticed that FragranceNet has both Angel Muse and Twilly…I am thinking about getting both, but might not. I think both are nice, but with the amount of perfume I already have, purchases should probably be confined to things that blow my socks off.

SOTD was Maria Candida Gentile “Cinabre”.

    Top: ginger, pepper and pink pepper;
    Mid: rose;
    Base: opoponax, benzoin and vanilla.

I like this one – a kind of spicy powdery rose – although its lasting powers are mediocre. If I ever make up my parcel of MCG small sizes, this one might be in it.

Meeting today with the design company we want to remodel the apartment. Looks like it can’t start until late Feb and could take 3 months. Well, we shall see what the cost estimate is first. We have a fixed budget and will have to trim our ideas accordingly.

I caught a glance of Nichelle Nichols in the Dealer’s Room at GenCon back in either 2012 or 2013. She looked gorgeous!

An update on my mom and her cataract surgery: she is doing just fine. Her follow-up exam went really well, and she said that she could read “even the little letters at the bottom of the chart”.

SOTD = Byredo Reine de Nuit, from the sample stash. This nasty cold weather is calling some something that is rich, indulgent, and a little sweet. I’ve pulled out my heavy alpaca/wool blend socks, and may break out the ski socks if needed.

Late checking in….look forward to going back and reading what everyone is wearing and how your days are going today. I am in my Shalimar EdP. I’ll find something for tomorrow to fit the theme but I’ve just been giving my FBs love this week. I ignore them a lot for sampling haha.

To update everyone on my Lucy bird who was injured for weeks- she is making a full recovery I believe! The doctors have been shocked! The bandage has come off of her leg, stitches out, and even got to take the collar off from around her neck a few days ago. Her little leg still looks pink and the skin needs to scale up and heal but no swelling, no infection etc. It is honestly the best Christmas present ever. I was devastated when I thought I’d lose her (or that she’d lose her leg)!

SOTD is Caron Nocturnes which I only have in edt. I came across it last week when I was looking for my bottle of Nuit de Noel. This one is all about the aldehydes, with floral and sandalwood, and a gorgeous dry-down. There’s a very nice article about it on Fragrantica, as the forgotten aldehyde, with many gorgeous pictures. It makes me wish I could get hold of some older versions. On another topic, I was asked by someone to report back on how I liked the movie “Call Me by Your Name.” My verdict: yes, it’s over-hyped. It is so sloooow! There is some very good acting, but the special friendship/love relationship never rang true for me. I have friends who adore the book, so maybe I’ll try it, but I guess I’m out of sympathy with male coming-of-age dramas.

I’m days behind in reading comments; hope to catch up soon.

I (finally!) snagged a bottle of Clinique Wrappings yesterday, and am wearing it today. I would have bought it before Christmas but Lord and Taylor (only place it was available locally) did not have a tester out and refused to open a gift set to let me try it. So I walked away. Yesterday when I wandered back by, lo and behold a tester was on the counter! I sprayed, took one sniff, and the credit card leaped into my hand. Funny thing is, Wrappings is now 25% off after Christmas, plus I had another discount to go with it, so L&T lost money by not making that tester available earlier!

    Be well, all.

I briefly started the day in Ummagumma, but it was a 100% disaster. (It smells amazing on my husband.). I then switched to Amsterdam by Gallivant – it’s lovely. Smells like L’Eau by Andy Tauer with pink pepper. I would choose L’Eau first, but would never turn down a bottle of Amsterdam if someone offered.

I do find the disconnect between description and scent very strong in this case, however. Amsterdam in fall? Try Riverside, CA in March.

So late today. I wore Harem Rose by Fort & Manle because it was released in 2017. I bought a sample pack a while ago. Harem is a very nice powdery, musky, incensey rose. Very pretty. It reminds of Calypso by Piguet. F & M is a great house and their bottles are some of the nicest that I’ve seen. My favorite of the line is Fatih Sultan Mehemed, a lovely green floral.
