Friday scent of the day 12/22

Posted by Robin on 22 December 2017 431 Comments

Happy 'Tis The Season Friday! Our community project for today: wear the perfect fragrance to celebrate, share joy and look forward to a new year. Thank you to happy888cat for the suggestion!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm going for a low stress holiday in Diptyque Tam Dao. I will probably spend the weekend back in Fendi Theorema, though.

Reminder: on 12/29 we're doing Best of 2017...wear one of your favorite fragrance releases of 2017.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I will need laser surgery – precancerous cells were found, but caught amazingly early, and chemo will not be required.
All in all, the best I could possibly hope for.
        I am so relieved

I did one drop of Sa Majeste la Rose on one wrist
a drop of Mitsouko on the other
and a drop Ambre Fetiche on my neck.

I couldn’t decide which one..so there you have it!

Crazy morning the CEO and I went back in forth about how much food to make for the holidays, since we are hosting…He accuse me of never making enough when we have guest over. His responsibility was to order a cooked turkey, and he told me he only got 7lbs which in his mind is enough (him and I are vegetarian) and I said..7lbs for 12 people?

      I’m thinking Mitsouko myself today…

Hilarious about the turkey. Where does one even find one that small? Maybe order a second one.

Maybe with plenty of side dishes, it will be enough turkey…?????

Depending on how many dishes you have, the turkey served in small portions might be ok…….

I think you’re definitely going to need a lot of appetizers and side dishes. Is a 7 lb turkey still a baby?

        HA!
Seriously, I am not sure what he is ordering. Maybe the Turkey is already sliced or something like that…Not my problem! That was his only responsibility…he will have to figure it out..

He’s Indian though, right? Indian people think “enough food” is where you have at least twice as much as you need. You should see my mother panicking over whether 20 lb goat curry will be enough for 40 people who will also be served nine other dishes. As I’ve started hosting parties, I’ve made the mistake of asking her how much I should make for x number of people. I’ve ended up with leftovers for the next couple weeks.

I’mr eally bad at figuring how much to make. My husband is an over-is-better, and I tend to go a little under. Agree that it might be fine with enough other dishes. I tend to like sides better anyway. Good luck and you’vegot 3 beautiful scents on to get you through!

I am wearing Donna Karan Black Cashemere. One of my big favorites for the holidays. It puts a smile on my face every time I wear it and makes me feel relaxed, happy and in peace.

We are off today to celebrate an early Christmas with my MIL, so my SOTD will be No. 19. Enough said.????

Yesterday was my first day of 8 days off from work and I made the 250 mile round trip to get the boy from college. I was so happy to see him, and he would never admit it, but I think he was happy to see us too.☺️

The next few days will be a whirlwind of activities, I look forward to the r&r after the holidays are over.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and holiday!

I LOVE Wrappings! The patchouli doesn’t really stand out on me – I’ve always thought of it as primarily a fir/balsam scent with some aldehydes up front. It also has good staying power. Haven’t tried the lotion yet.

Amouage Lyric Woman this morning. But as much as I can appreciate its beauty, it’s not really me – glad I didn’t go for a full bottle.

I will switch later – probably Dzing! Lots of little loose ends to tie up today and some cleaning and baking.

    Happy Friday, all!

It’s a beautiful snowy day, so I will be pairing Dries van Noten with my favorite cashmere sweater and drinking lots of hot beverages. Tonight my brother and I are going to watch Star Wars (episode 4) with my niece, who will be seeing it for the first time ever. I literally grew up watching that movie (my parents would take me to the drive in with them while I was an infant to watch it because it never failed to put me to sleep), and I can’t imagine what it would be like to see it for the first time.

Have a wonderful evening weekend everyone!

Wearing Yosh Ginger Ciao. What better end-of-the-year scent than one whose name means both goodbye and hello?

I wore this a lot last summer after picking it up on a whim at an online sale. Now I wish I’d gotten more. It layers very nicely with all manner of things, extending its seasons of use. Today I’m wearing it over Roger & Gallet Gingembre body lotion for a bit of extra warmth and spice on a cold, gray day.

    Happy Friday!
Hot,muggy overcast day here in Africa,it is that moment of the promise of rain in the air and then it doesn’t…
I started out in CognoScenti 17,its amber note smelled quit Christmassy.Described as a civet chypre,I don’t get much animalic from it though.
Test day at Lush was fun. When I bought Amelie Mae a while back(love at first sniff!!) I smelled something there that stuck on me,and the drydown was so awesome I needed to go back today to find it.Rentless came home with me.Cardamom Coffee is also really really nice.Twilight Showergel also in the bag, that malt note is awesome.
Happy Looooong weekend alll! And Merry Christmas to those who celebrate!I am spending Christmas alone by choice.Did not accept any invitations and booked Christmas lunch for one at the Country club on the estate where I live.

I think I do. 🙂 It’s a realistic pine + spicy cookies (and maybe something like a church incense). Separately “pine” theme and “cookie” theme would probably be too much for me, but they work together very well, balancing each other. It’s like sitting next to a freshly cut Christmas tree and a plate of freshly baked cookies.

Champagne folks took their trademark seriously – there’s YSL Yvresse/Champagne and this Caron. Too seriously, in my opinion.
        Cool smilies!
I am not such a connoisseur of Caron as you are, Bear, but I notice that Carons tend to have a solemn elegance, even austerity in their dry-down. I think modern Royal Bain has less of it than Sacre and Nuit de Noel, but it still makes a luxurious old-style bath.

In MFK Grand Soir on this frigid day in DC! It really gets cold outside of CA, huh? This scent is just so over-the-top that it makes me joyous and giggly 🙂 so even though I love JadainGA’s philosophy of all perfumes bringing joy, I think I am extra within the parameters of this week’s CP!

I recently skimmed an interview with MFK in which he purportedly spouted such nonsense as “don’t put perfume on your skin because it won’t last as long.” Piffle, that’s what I have to say to that. Just because it’ll last longer on my scarf doesn’t mean I want to miss out on the interaction between the scent and my skin. Harrumph.

    Hi everyone,
    Its been a while!

Remember the story about my mom who ended up being in Intensive Care 1,5 week ago, and almost lost her life due to an inflammation?
Well there was another problem with her liver. That almost took her life as well.
She is now stable and no longer in IC, but still in hospital, also long term perspective is vague/unknown.

So i am tired, and kinda worn out argh. But still wearing scents!
And my mum complimented me twice on Fille en Aiguilles wednesday.

    SotD is Sarrasins

Take care, have a great weekend and hug your mom!

      I am so sorry Jiji
All I can say is that the liver is an amazing organ, and with the right treatment it can heal 🙂
      Sending you healing thoughts…

        Thank you!
Unfortunately the liver damage has been developing for a long time and seems irreversible 🙁

But our first concern is to see her grow strong and fit enough to be able to leave the hospital (something we probably will not see before xmas).

      Best wishes for your mum.
Abdominal problems take a while to heal, but I think it’s great that she is out of ICU, and isn’t it also great that she is able to take an interest in what perfume you are wearing?

    Goooood morning! I have heat!!!

    Beautiful heat.

    Furnace is very good.

The Lolita Lempika I applied last night is still going strong–sorry not sorry to my fellow gym folks. Post shower I think I will go for something celebratory and glamorous– Chamade parfum.

In other perfume news… so on Thursday I was in Walnut Creek (a wealthy suburb about 25 miles east of SF) with my mum who wanted support while shopping for make-up. (Despite her declarations of “knowing nothing about make-up” –clerk complimented her on her eye shadow that she arrived in and then my mom spent $500+ at the Chanel counter–yes I felt like I was 16 again, but THAT is another story!) Anyway, we were at Nordstrom’s, which even out in the hinterlands of Walnut Creek is now stocking Le Labo, Frederick Malle, Creed, all the Tom Fords…. you get the picture. While the truly fancy Neiman Marcus, where sometimes I don’t even have the nerve to enter, has stopped carrying all Guerlain’s except Shalimar, had only a handful of Chanels, stopped carrying MFK except for Baccarat and A la Rose, and on and on… Neiman Marcus was the one place you could find really high end French perfume east of SF…not anymore. Perfume department looked like a large empty closet.

Wow, that’s too bad about Neiman Marcus. Our local store also got rid of its Gueralin and Van Cleef and Arpel sections, but increased the Creed and House of Silliage sections significantly. At least your Nordstrom has an exciting selection now!

Hooray for heat! Our furnace was broken for a week last year, and it was dreadful. I love our new furnace so much.

The furnace dude said we will have to replace our furnace very soon. I am not looking forward to that bill, but gosh I love heat!!

Amazing how suddenly Creed and House of Sillage are everywhere now, well everywhere being extremely relative that is! Both selections seem to frequently have a dedicated salesperson as well. Maybe it is a new marketing thrust, or maybe it just t’is the season.

Oh ya. Bing Crosby’s! Never managed to eat there. But I remember it. The restaurant closed about 5 years ago. With the economic upswing, lots of new shops are moving in again and the streets and parking lots have been spiffed up. But it is almost all chain and name brand stores now.

Yesss!!! to working heater. Only after you live through not having it you realize how unpleasant it gets even in our mild CA winter.
Where I live it’s the opposite: Nordstrom’s perfume department is pitiful but the closest NM (Palo Alto) has improved significantly in the recent years (though, it’s not even close to the SF one).
Did you try anything new this time?

Naw, I was with my mum and she is not into trying perfume. I did check out new to me Chanel Gabriella and the latest J’Adore flanker as I was standing next to the testers. Nothing to write home about. Also sniffed some Pradas. If a bottle of Infusion d’Oeillet fell into my lap, I’d happily wear it–soapiness and all.

It is also interesting to see which counters have dedicated salesclerks. Tom Ford perfumes had two at Nordstrom’s! (No one was dedicated at the Le Labo and Frederic Malle counters.) I was told I could not make my own sample of Neroli Portofino (that Nordstrom’s has little, empty spray sample vials near many of the testers for customers to fill if they choose). But the clerk made me a sample in a TF glass sample sprayer that looks over 2 mls, which has a pretty gold top and a pre-printed gold label with the name of the perfume on it. They handed me the whole thing in a Tom Ford box. Labor and product together it was all very extravagant–and lovely!

Huh. So the Tom Ford is like its own little franchise, probably staffed by its own employees. (I am nosy, I often ask who people work for when I am shopping fragrance. Or, you can figure it out anyway by asking them questions about other brands.)

Yay for heat! They spiffed up the La Jolla Nordstroms, it now has Le Labo, Byredo and Atelier Cologne, although sadly no Malle. Still have to go to South Coast Plaza for that. And they added Le Labo to Fashion Valley, along with Tom Ford. The FV Neiman Marcus is very small and not much perfume of interest there. I noticed last week they had removed Jo Malone, Guerlain has been gone for a while.

Removed Jo Malone? Gosh, I would think that juice makes money hand over fist. I am sad about the Guerlains! I make it into the city for perfume sniffing once a year if I am very lucky. My go-to Guerlain fix has been that Neiman Marcus in Walnut Creek.

Yes — my local NM gave over a quarter of its fragrance space to Creed and Jo Malone. Now I am very curious! But even last year, Guerlain had lost most of its space, and expanded in Nordstrom.

The renovated plaza and main street area look terrific, if a little too name brand-y. I wish they kept a few places with low rents for innovative new shops that aren’t chains. There used to be a sort of funky frozen yogurt place (Yogurt Park) where I’d grab something midday—and that is gone. In its place (well near the old spot) is a very pretty Godiva Chocolate shop, however. I mention it because you wouldn’t know it from the outside, but that place sell Godiva soft serve chocolate ice cream… a new destination for moi!

Last week, the boyfriend and I drove south past what he says is around where your house must be! (We were going down to LA.) So I thought of you. Also thought of you when we were down in Santa Barbara and we saw the terrifying fires in the mountains, then saw firetruck after firetruck zooming down the streets.

It was 17 degrees when I was getting dressed this morning, so that made my choice easy: Burberry Brit Red, a go-to holiday fragrance for me at the holiday season when it’s cold. The House of Burberry and I have been of frosty terms since it committed the unforgivable sin of discontinuing this spicy rhubarb custard masterpiece (and also the folly of releasing mostly mediocre fragrances since).. I have carefully hoarded my last few bottles in a dark closet, and live in fear of them going off, which would devastate me! I’m off work today – too much use-or-lose leave that must be burned up before the end of the month – so Brit Red is the perfect companion for today’s cookie baking, candy making madness (7 different cookies, 3 different candies….why do I make things so complicated every year…ack).

Looking very much forward to a trip up the road to Boulder tomorrow to visit DSH at her studio, and trying her newer scents (Habibi, Tsukimi, Chataignes du Bois, L’Etole de Vison, and Arabesque), finally getting myself a bottle of the delightful Foxy, and buying a big ole refill of the perfectly named Divine Gardens, my HG of 2017 that I completely drained over the course of the last 10 months.

Safe journeys to all traveling over the next two weeks, and best wishes for a peaceful holiday season. May all of your fragrant desires come true! ☃️❄️????✌️☮️

Gold is fantastic! I had a mini that I nursed for several years, but it’s long gone. I’m almost afraid to see what it’s going for on eBay ????. Why oh why did Burberry d/c these??? ????

Gold is better than anything Burberry has made recently. They should give it another name and bring it back.

Jo Malone French Lime Blossom has become my easy summer scent of the past ten days or so. we have so many lime/ lindens around here in full bloom at the moment and yesterday I snuck off for a walk in the park to take in the scents. I have also been won over by Gabrielle which surprises me as I was so luke warm about it. It’s just very wearable, a bit Jour d’Hermes like ( I’ve never worn Coco Mademoiselle so can’t compare with that) and it is pleasant and relaxed and good in the heat. Also, life is a bit hard on Alex at the moment and he’s not feeling too good so it’s a tolerated perfume. Also been wearing Gris Clair in the evenings…nice. Happy solstice!

I love linden smell both from the trees and in perfume. I envy you a little: linden in full bloom is probably one of my most favorite nature smells (and we do not get it where I live now, so it’s not just a question of the season). French Lime Blossom is my all-times favorite perfume – you smell wonderful!

I wish you could come and sit in the park with me…there’s a small lawn encircled by huge lindens and it’s amazing. I would like to come back as a linden or oak in my next life (and spend my days sniffing my branches and leaves)

I thought of you last night as I was testing the new Grandiflora Boronia scent. Lovely scent, although never having smelled an actual boronia flower I can’t say how true to nature it is.

Sorry to hear Alex is feeling bad, please tell him your perfume friends around the world are wishing him well and sending healing thoughts!

How lovely – I must go and see if the boronia is in flower in the gardens. We have the red flowering one – so jammy.
Thanks for your kind thoughts re. Alex. It’s been a cycle of pain/lack of sleep . It should start getting better soon, I hope.

Today, for my last shift at the bookstore before Christmas, I used an entire sample of MFK Absolue Pour Le Soir. Rich, animalic and smoky and probably too bold but one customer said “you smell so soft and pretty.” Some days, perfume eating skin is a blessing and I think this fragrance is beautiful.

SotD = Cologne du 68, a celebration of the cologne style, and it gives me great joy. Hope that satisfies today’s project well enough. Really enjoying the citrus goodness in this fragrance as I peel and eat a delicious clementine.

Woke up craving Cd68 because I planned to wear it last night before bedtime, but was tired and forgot about it until I was under the covers. Then I fell asleep. At 9:30 pm. And that’s how I roll on winter solstice, lol.

In “things may be looking up” news: I was wandering online at Beauty Encounter and noticed a bottle of Roger & Gallet Lavande Royale for under $25. The picture shows the old bottle, so I hope it is the pre-reform version I love so much and have longed for over the years. After I placed my order I noticed it is a 6.8 oz ml bottle! 200 mls! Perfumath free, yes indeed.

Best wishes to all for a fabulously fragrant Friday!

Yesterday I ran a few errands and stuck my nose into a TJ Maxx. I never find anything good there perfumewise, but yesterday there was a Stash gift set from last season with no price tag. I took it to the register, fully expecting to pay $25-30, but the clerk says, “Oh, these were $9.99.” Now I have a backup!
I’m in one of my favorite scents for any time of year, Slumberhouse’s Norne, but it seems fitting today to smell like a forest of fir trees.

I have GOT to give Stash a good try. I sniffed a friend’s perfume oil once and found it lovely but meh, but I feel like I need to find myself a sample (or a $10 full-bottle-sized sample) to see if I actually like it. You all sound like you adore it! And it worked out when you all raved over Pharrell Girl and I ended up liking it.

Posting again to ask for book recommendations for an eighth grader? I know very, very little about her except that she likes to read. I’ve never met her. So far, my list (with help from someone who actually sometimes sees children) is:

Anne of Green Gables (L M Montgomery)
    Redwall (Brian Jacques)
Percy Jackson & the Olympians series (Rick Riordan)
    Jane Eyre (Charlotte Brontë)
    Dracula (Bram Stoker)
    The Time Garden (Edward Eager)
    The Martian (Andy Weir)
A Wrinkle in Time (Madeleine l’Engle)
    The Secret Garden(Frances Hodgson Burnett)
    Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen)

    I’d appreciate any other contributions!

Based on limited data (my son & my niece at that age) I would say kids today are more sophisticated readers at a younger age. So Anne, for instance, and Wrinkle in Time, etc, I would gear towards a 4th or 5th grader, and at 8th grade I’d be looking for teen lit fiction.

Sometimes anthologies can be good for dipping into…could be fantasy, science fiction, nature writing, travel writing, and lots of poetry (of course).
      Also… (she’s around 12-13 years old?)
      The Mare by Mary Gaitsill
Women and Power by Mary Beard
Caitlin Moran How to Build a Girl, or How to Be a Woman
Arundhati Roy , God of Small Things
      One Hundred years of Solitude

I’m in Lonesome Rider today. One of my favs this time of year. We have two holiday parties this evening, one a tacky Christmas sweater party. I don’t have a tacky sweater, but got crafty with a tulle skirt, some Christmas tree balls, a bag of bows, and a hot glue gun. To say I’m excited about this little festive creation I’ll be wearing is an understatement. 😀

Also good news, we bought a house! We’ve been renting a townhouse since we moved here in September. It’s sufficient, but in a very busy/noisy area. Anyway, we found a wonderful house and we close on January 19th!

I’m wearing FM Une ROSE today (and may have overapplied). Rose is used in Ayurveda to create balance and a sense of inner well-being and joy, though my dosing of this one may scare some people away, lol. UR is so velvety and lush and exuberant! Wishing everyone inner-peace, well- being, and joy in the upcoming year.

I’m smelling spicy in Geisha Rouge and have gotten 2 compliments on it this morning. When I pulled up to the drive-thru window to pay for my coffee this morning, the cashier informed me that the person in front of me had already paid for mine. Great start to the day! The family that owns the NoFrills Grocery Store in the town where I work donated all the food for our Christmas dinner so we had turkey, stuffing, potatoes, corn, gravy and buns for the entire school, about 400 people. There is much good in the world.

I went all out and am wearing Memoir Woman since I have the day off work. So far I’ve slept in and have been watching Outlander (I’m pretty far behind on this season.) Soon I’ll go out for lunch with my book and/or podcast depending on how loud it is in the restaurant. Then some Goodwill shopping. My perfect day spent on my own.

I had a wonderful albeit cold time. I ate a lunch of collard greens and a biscuit sandwich and sat at a table in between two other single diners. Got to read a little and listen to music.

Goodwill was fruitful. I brought home a bunch of books, a few gifts for a co-worker, and found a little Estee Lauder solid perfume in a gold seashell compact. I think it might be Knowing. Will do some research.

Christmas present to myself arrived early a couple days ago and has been on my skin ever since, Narciso Rodriguez for Her Amber Musc. When I tried a sample a few months ago, I was put off by it, too oud-y for an oud newbie like me. Then it morphed on skin into this gorgeous, sexy, warming, calming, confidence-building scent. Had me craving it after day 1. It’ll now & forever be linked to the holidays for me. ❤️

Rose Jam! RoseJamRoseJamRoseJamRose JamRoseJam! ROOOOOSE JAAAAAM!

I finally got my hands on a bottle of the body spray earlier this week, and I’m still overjoyed. I have all the other RJ-scented products Lush makes, but there’s something about the perfume/spray that just seems so much better….

Well, 2017 is all over bar the shouting. Hurrah!

I have not been fit for much this week, exhausted by doing (or failing to do) the work of 3 people when the other 2 quit. I am not disheartened, merely worn out and unable to function properly, so the Christmas break comes in the nick of time.

I was pretty much on theme all week:
Mon: Annick Goutal “Encens Flamboyant” for sproce and incense
Tue: BeauFort London “Lignum Vitae” for ginger spices
Wed: Serge Lutens “Arabie” for dried fruits and spices
Thu: Rundholz “whatever.whatever.1968” for more incense
Today: 4160 Tuesdays “A Kiss by the Fireside” for cozy smoke.

Take care all! Next week we fly out to Malaga to sign the paperwork and buy our new apartment. It will likely be February before work starts to make it habitable.

I put on Nuit de Noel today even though it’s early because I was packing to come down to Galveston for Christmas at my Mom’s, and the bottle would be too fragile to pack. All the Carons tend to smell alike to me. I wear this one because, tradition. Traffic was abominable and my mom’s memory issues have tried my patience. I do not feel much in the Christmas spirit. I’m sad and resentful to have to leave behind my own house, cats, and decorated tree. The. I feel shame at being resentful. I will try to put a better face on things.

Being a caregiver is not easy by any stretch of the imagination. Many of us have been in your shoes, dear. We’ve all felt frustrated and sad at one time or another, and I think the holidays exacerbate the situation since we remember the way things were “before”.
It’s okay to vent a little, and as others have said, this is a safe place!

Thank you, thank you to everyone who responded in such empathetic and kind ways. It means a lot to me. I need to find a support group of some kind. But thanks for letting me lean on people here. My mom did used to wear perfume, Youth Dew because my dad liked it, and L’Air du Temps and Tresor, which I detest. When I mentioned some of these to her, she says, “Oh no, I’ve never liked fragrances.” I never contradict her, but wow it’s tough. I will now just try to relax into the season with some nice cookie baking and so on. Neighbors in her condo building are hosting a big barbecue tomorrow and I think it’ll be fun.

    SOTD = Chanel No. 19

Today is the start of my vacation and I spent the day doing Saturday’s activities (shopping with Mom – Costco and Target today because tomorrow would be a MADHOUSE).

I didn’t I was going to get scented gifts (not counting the from me to me gifts) but lo and behold, my niece and sister-in-law decided to make stuff. My mom and I each received a beautifully packaged set of soap, lip balms and candle. The soap is Charcoal Rose Clay that is gray on top and pink on the bottom; the ingredients are goat milk soap base, rose clay, fragrance oils (orange blossom, oak moss & Amber and rose) and activated charcoal. The lip balms were made with beeswax, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil, sweet flavor oil and mica; the Sugar Cookie has buttercream flavor oil while the Candy Cane has peppermint essential oil. The First Snow candle is mad with snowflake❄️ magic ????✨ and fresh air ???????? ????.

Still lots to do preparing gifts!

Looking forward to reading everyone’s picks!

I’m wearing Sensual Orchid today and it’s very soft on me. Thanks again!

Happy Holidays to you and your family.
