Wednesday scent of the day 12/6

Posted by Robin on 6 December 2017 205 Comments

It's Hump Day! Plus, happy Saint Nicholas Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Tom Ford White Patchouli.

Reminder: 12/8 will be Patchouli Friday...what it says!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

In Pacifica Tibetan Mountain Temple, a favorite with a good amount of patchouli. Nice for a grey, cold, windy day.

I hope any NSTers in California near the fire area are sound and safe. Take care everyone!

More patch in HdP’s Noir Patchouli. Reminds me of the scent of Caswell-Massey’s sadly discontinued Aura of Patchouli soap. It’s very nice, especially since the weather here in AZ has finally cooled off.

I still spring for an Elixir of Love soap once in a while, and my dad likes the Presidential soap collection (which is an easy gift), but Aura of Patchouli was my true Caswell-Massey love. I tried the Atelier Mistral Patchouli soap (which I think is also discontinued?) and didn’t enjoy it nearly as much.

Coffee not quite as strong as Bear’s. Espresso mixed with quite a bit of milk…necessarily lukewarm but does the job.

I don’t think I own many in the patch world…may have to dig around in samples. But…am fine to wear my own little comfort blanket of Angel Muse. This could just carry me through the week.

I sometimes microwave the milk for 15 or 20 seconds before adding the espresso – it’s still lukewarm that way, but less so.

I do that, too. It also sweetens the milk a bit when it’s heated, which I like.

I sat next to a woman the other night who had a copious amount of Angel, the original, and I was totally nauseous the whole time. I kept leaning away from her and figured it was too rude to get up and move to another table. The TM scents need light application, always.

I happily won the Tigerlilly sample box so I pulled out Parfums Quartan Wolfsbane. The website says patchouli is one of the notes init but I don’t notice it. That is fine as it is not a favorite of mine. This seems nice. I will see how it goes today.

SOTD is Lush/Gorilla Rentless, the solid version. Earthy, dirty and sweet (but not cloyingly sweet) patchouli scent.

Unless you count Rentless washcard, no. A lot of people find Rentless very similar to Lush Lord of Misrule shower cream and bath bomb, though. Lord of Misrule combines the notes of patchouli, pepper and vanilla. While both scents are sweet, earthy and spicy patchouli scents, I find them distinctly different (but both are worthy of attention).
I must say that Rentless is a shape-shifter on my skin. Sometimes it’s a lovely sweet patchouli with spices. Sometimes it smells like an ashtray sprinkled with wet soil. I still do not know what to think of it. :)

Lush UK currently sells Lord of Misrule in the solid perfume and body spray versions on their website. Unfortunately they do not ship body sprays outside the UK, but they do ship solids internationally.

Today’s SOTD is Halston Couture by Halston – I do adore this Chypre (very heavy on the woods). It’s Patchouli, jasmine, rose, amber, oakmoss and probably more patchouli in the base. My bottle is from the early 1990’s.

        Hi Robin,
It may be, it’s the same original Elsa Peretti bottle design (tear drop shaped) but the top is polished silver.. It’s gorgeous stuff, if I were to describe the scent, it’s sits perfectly between Paloma Picasso and Knowing with some of the dryness of Aromatics Elixir without the intensity of the herbal notes.

Not a Patchouli day. Wearing the DSH Chataignes du Bois rollerball that I won in a draw on cafleurebon. Opens with an interesting chestnut note (not one I have smelled in perfume before) and then some light maple syrup sweetness. A hint of smokiness in my skin and finally a nice woodsy blend of all of it for the drydown. A nice choice for the holidays. From the rollerball it is a skin scent but it is nice for work where I don’t want too much projection. A winner in my book. Will enjoy throughout the holidays.

Ooops, jumped the patchouli gun yesterday. I thought I had a sample of Coromandel around for today, but I used it up! So now I have to think about what I’ll wear on Friday, and if I actually have any patch scents beyond Rose Anonyme.

Anyway, wearing Devil’s Nightcap today. Like patch, it is also strong, and neither entirely pleasing nor entirely displeasing to the nose.

PSA–LUSH has brought back a bunch of scents on their website that were previously discontinued. I will almost certainly pick up Smell of Weather Turning (once I verify in person that it smells the same and there are no weird reformulations).

Need to pull out my patch scents and get ’em on!

I’m trying Glossier’s new You which is completely underwhelming and in fact, gone! It’s not bad going on, light iris, not much root, but then a lot of musk. Did a heavy spraying of this and still totally gone 3 hrs later. I’m a fan of a number of her products but this one is a fail in my opinion. Bottle is in that too cool category that it’s just weird.

Wanted easy and cozy today, so wearing SL Clair de Musc. I think this one gets a bad rap, but I actually am finding it to be a perfect musk for me. Not too clean or too powdery. Not “too” anything, which maybe makes it boring to some, especially for a SL.

Turns out I’ve been inadvertently participating in patchouli week by showering with a sample of patchouli-mint soap. I’m not a fan of patchouli normally, but it’s actually quite nice!

SOTD is Kuumba Made Oriental Musk with a few dabs of Zen incense body powder on top.

I tried the L’eau No.5 yesterday and really liked it…perhaps because it was such a hot day. Was very tempted. Had a nice picnic in the Invercargill botanic gardens. Every rose was in full bloom, and the lime (lindens) in blossom…what a combination. Next to the hospital and a long wait. There was a fascimile of the Treaty of Waitangi ( between the Crown and Maori) on the wall in the entrance…written in Maori. It had Richard Taylor’s signature on it…the missionary who described the grand Maori perfume. So Alex is on for his hip replacement next week. His knackered femur will be ground down into pellets and used for the bone graft packing out the ceramic and plastic replacement…there’s something a bit thrilling about grinding down bones ( fi fie fo fum etc.)

31 Rue Cambon for me today, to give me backbone during a minor operation/procedure, I really enjoy the Patchouli in it. I was very nervous, but Rue Cambon + lovely NHS dr and nurses did the trick.
Back home in bed, with a cup of Twinings China rose tea, and a cinnamon bun now. So relieved it’s over!

Good morning, all. I’m drifting towards a long day, trying to pretend it’s not really going to happen: work, work, work, MEETING (tricky, likely to be full of difficult conversations), two hours to kill, then a kind-of-compulsory dinner with the Dean. He’s a really nice guy, and I totally respect him, but it won’t be a politics-free situation. Ordinarily, I’d be all on my mettle, and happy to play political games, but today I’ve woken tired from poor sleep and anxious dreams, and I’d rather come straight home, have a poached egg on toast, and fall into bed.

The scent for this long day exercised me, but in the end, I settled on Cristalle. Our weather has settled into cloudless heat, and nothing cuts through heat the way Cristalle does. It lasts well on my skin, it’s sophisticated enough for dinner, it won’t (especially by this evening) be impolitely assertive at the dinner table. I’m teaming it with a little blue silk shift dress. I can fling on a necklace and some black stockings and high heels, and voila ( or as a hapless student once wrote, “viola!” ), I have moved sartorially from work to the different game.

Thank you for all your well-wishing about Eric’s Incident yesterday. I was so busy yesterday that I didn’t get back to NST until very late in our day, by which time, I hope that most of you were sleeping the sleep of the just and wise. We haven’t sorted out how The Incident occurred, but we are Taking Steps to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Be well, all.

Wearing Ile Pourpre by Liquides Imaginaires today. St. Nicholas Day is one of my favorite days. Growing up, the night before it meant going to the basement and getting out our Christmas stockings for St. Nicholas to leave us presents. I know traditionally it’s leaving out shoes, but for whatever reason my father grew up with setting out stockings, so we do the same. And as a kid it also signaled that Christmas was coming soon (in addition to our Advent Wreath).

SOTD is fear! Was hearing water for my morning coffee when my entire butane stove went up in flames! There must have been a leak in the line or something, but it totally woke me up in a way coffee never could!

Luckily, the stove was right by he side door, so I was able to reach over (almost set my fleece on fire!), open the door and flip the entire mess out the door. A huge crash ensued as the stove, teapot, and butane canister hit the pavement. Fun times! Geez. Now I really need some coffee.

The left over scent from last night was a hit of Chypre Mousse (thanks Foxbins!). I am of two minds with this one…????

But this is not that???? The only other one I could think of was Chypre Mousse…I remember liking the brandy fig thing but this is not that either, I don’t think… I’m old, and apparently not to be trusted with stoves and other flammable materials…it’s a mystery.

I don’t smell patchouli in PHI, mostly rose, tobacco and apricot, but it is a fantastic scent!

So good! Thanks for the info on the notes. I do have my sample with me here in Orlando; the weather is going to cool down in the next 2 days so it will be awesome on Friday.

Currently I’m wearing vintage Krizia for bedtime from a mini I bought here on my last trip.

SOTD yesterday was Parfumeri Generale “Intrigant Patchouli”.

Notes are ginger, sandalwood, amber, patchouli, musk and benzoin.

About as intriguing as brown bread, but hey ho.

SOTD today is Jovoy “Private Label”

    Top: papyrus, vetiver, leather;
    Mid: patchouli, sandalwood;
    Base: labdanum

Well, 3 patchoulis into patchouli week and it’s not doing a lot for me. :^)

Intrigant Patchouli smelled like wintergreen pain relief patches to me.

SOTD is Sballo a lovely rough and resinous salty rose/geranium/hay/chypre . I’ve never smelled anything similar. The listed notes do not include patchouli but it does smell like it’s in there.

I’m so curious about Sballo and your description just amplified my curiosity! Must get my mitts on a sample.

That is so sweet of you to offer, but I’m up in Canada and postage would be too silly to bother you to do that. ❤️

I’m hoping that any NSTers in southern California are OK. I saw the update on the fires in that area earlier today. Scary stuff.

SOTD = Soivohle’s Patchou Minimal, from the sample stash. This is one of the new-ish scents, and it is a polished patchouli.

The images online look like they are straight out of hell. Such an incredible loss for all. Will take years to recover, I’m sure.

Hey ho, NST, it’s so late in the day I almost didn’t make it here, but I decided I didn’t want to miss today’s loveliness. You all smell(ed) marvelous.

Hope everyone is tucked in for the night. Catch you on the flip side!

Hello all, I’ve been AWOL for a few days while helping my mother move to Texas for the winter and working out arrangements at her (rented) condo in Galveston. Lots to take care of including Internet, many groceries and supplies, and (thank goodness) a helpful care-giver for days I am not able to be around. It was all rather stressful and that wasn’t helped by a sudden weather front and horrendous weather. (On our flight down we circled Houston awhile and then had to go to Dallas to refuel and wait for the airport to re-open, making for an especially long tough day). I am happy about the current week’s project, as a patchouli lover, and joined in (finally) tonight by many sprays of Perris Monte Carlo Patchouli Nosy Be. It’s striking me as rather sour tonight, so that the supposedly strong notes of cocoa and vanilla are not standing out. I think it’s the strong patchouli and labdanum taking center stage. I am going to drink wine, watch TV, and relax with a pile of cats on me (and the sad Persian, Armani, my recent rescue, scolding me from upstairs with his scratchy meow–he’s a very needy old boy). It’s gotten surprisingly cold here (down to 40!) and it’s rather nice to have all these furry bodies close by. I helped my mom set up some Christmas decorations and a little tree but now I’m so pooped I don’t have any energy for my own seasonal decorating. Maybe it’ll come back soon.

Wine and a lap full of cats will restore you! Oh, and a good nights sleep will help????
