Thursday scent of the day 11/30

Posted by Robin on 30 November 2017 166 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday (and Almost-December)! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Le Labo Bergamote 22, by Daphné Bugey. I smell fantastic.

Reminder: on 12/1, wear something by Annie Buzantian, Honorine Blanc or Daphné Bugey.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I showered with some new spicy sandalwood soap that I bought from Ten Thousand Villages, the Mennonite Relief Agency’s store, and topped off the spice with Red Carnation from Comme des Garcons.

I didn’t realize that was a Mennonite ministry thing! I first came across it maybe ten years ago when we were going to a Presbyterian church. They have some really nice gifts. I still have some ornaments and a wood serving piece I bought several years ago.

Yes, started out of the trunk of Edna Ruth Bylar’s car (an MCC worker) in 1946. The Canadian headquarters are in the little town where I work (New Hamburg) and the MCC has an incredible quilt auction here every May that earns thousands of dollars for Mennonite Central Committee. I think my soap was 6 or 7 dollars and it smells awesome.

You do smell good, Robin!! I am in four sprays of Chanel 31 Rue Cambon. I have to go to funeral mass for a friend’s mother and thought this would be beautiful, classic yet comforting.

That’s a nutmeg? It’s beautiful! SOTD is Iris Prima from a new FB. It seems different than the fragrance in my little mini – fainter, and with a coconut note that I don’t remember being in the mini version. Still nice, but not quite what I was expecting. Might layer some Tam Dao over the top before I leave the house.

Right, so if you grind that lacy outer covering, that is mace. If you grind the seed underneath, that is nutmeg. And that whole thing is found inside a fruit (it’s the stone). Good pictures here:

Wow, thank you! Mace sounds absolutely lovely, and I’m going to invest some time exploring it in cookery. Assuming Mr. G ever lets me into “his” kitchen. I’m lucky to be married to a former chef, but … :)

No Tam Dao was necessary – it just turns out Iris Prima is a bit shy at first. It took maybe an hour for it to bloom a bit on skin, and now (lunchtime) it’s quite a nice and very office-friendly iris.

        Thanks.
Also thanks for responding to my lipstick question yesterday. I think the smell/taste of MAC for instance is a bit too strong (and lots of their formulas are a bit drying on me). And I bought a cheap brand a few months ago (Nyx?), Texture was okay, but the taste was just gross, I threw it away.
Yeah I am picky when it comes to lipsticks hahaha

Try the Guerlain kiss kiss or the fancy one with the mirror.
The lipsticks that look like LPRN bottles, the smell is a bit strong but there is not much taste.
I really like the Liquid Matte, it has no smell or taste to me but it may be too drying for you.

Beware of the lipsticks shaped like LPRN bottles, there is so much perfume in them they burned my lips.

          • Lovestosmellgood says:
            30 November 2017 at 12:40 pm

I have 2 LPRN lippys and they are heavy on the fragrance but it didn’t burn me at all.

Second Ede’s comment below on Lipstick Queen. I have medevil, great texture and finish but will not last on my lips after drinking a cup of tea.

Didn’t see your question yesterday but lemme join here! :) I like Bobbi Brown’s lipsticks and yes to Guerlain too – The Kiss Kiss and Rouge G (the one with the mirror) range. Haven’t tried the LPRN shaped ones so can’t comment on them.

I also will chime in with some favorites here even though I was not asked. HAHAHAHA. don’t know your budget, but some favorites of mine are Hourglass girl lip stylos, and their new confession lipstick. Also, Marc Jacobs does nice lipsticks. As far as I remember, neither have a discernible scent.

Also, the Rouge Dior lipsticks were reformulated last year and really lovely–however, they do have the classic makeup violet scent.

Chanel is always great, I pretty much like all their formulations, the lip gloss, lip stylo, lipstick, and lip crayons.

Bite beauty does some really nice lipsticks (not to mention the agave lip balm and scrub) and a good multiple.

Finally, Nars Audacious are great. again, no scent, and the pigment payoff is amazing. Plus, the packaging is great–a satisfying magnetic closure.

(and for the outrageous end of the pricing spectrum, Tom Ford (lip and boys and lips and girls are smaller and less expensive than the full size) and Serge Lutens)

On the drugstore end, Rimmel did a nice collab with Kate Moss. and Milani does nice liquid lipsticks.

Have you checked out Colourpop? They’re super affordable.

Yes love/have NARS Audacious (yes love the magnetic cap), Tom Ford and Chanel (Allure Ink).

Never tried anything Dior, dont know why…wow they offer a lot of different formulas….

Bite Beauty is not available here in The Netherlands as far as i know, but if they ever start distribution here I will surely check them out. :)

      Late to the lipstick question:

      1) What is the finish you are looking for? 2) What colors do you like?

I am kinda over the whole matte lipstick bit and am liking more sheer, satiny finishes. So for that, I am a convert to Urban Decay Sheer/Sheer Shimmer lipsticks and Lipstick Queen.

      • Jiji says:

        1.
I like velvet (if that makes sense, or semi-matte) to satin finishes.
I dont mind a little bit of shine or sheer, but def dont want to go full glitter gloss.

        2.
        Shades of reds and plums.
Not too orang-y, or too pink.

Brands I use right now: NARS, Urban Decay, Chanel and Tom Ford, but I am always on the lookout for other brands/better formulas. :)

I’m wearing What woukd love do? Which is a sweet lavender with a tad of orange zest and vanilla. I went into Lush yesterday and came out with that one, Amelie Mae and Cardamon Coffee….the new label design and the fact the shop was empty of customers had a dizzying effect on my brain. Also I had just tried Scandal in the neighbouring chemist…homework for today’s Friday project ( rabbit x 3 here) . Scandal …say what!!?? Reminded me of LL Sweet with a spoonful of sugar on top…in other words Unbearable. The best thing about being in the chemist was helping an elderly woman reach Anais Anais from the bottom shelf …. The first time in my life I have had a conversation about perfume with a shopper in Dunedin. She took six or so decent sprays from the tester and then asked me to put it back…she was smiling.

It smells like a rough floral with a large dollop of raspberry jam…ylang ylang and raspberry jam, with a bit of dishwashing liquid. Definitely a Lush scent.
I like the old labels too. They were slightly hippy, individual…had personality and character.
The ‘what would love do’ gets a slight chocolate covered licorice as it develops.
I tried Relentless (?) too …I wonder if that was the death and decay one?

Good morning Y’all….Can’t wait to say goodbye to November! It was a long, busy month of too much to do and keep up with! :)

Smelling FABULOUS in Aquolina Steel Sugar. Gingerbread and tobacco goodness. Kind of masculine, but altogether good stuff!

Wearing the dregs of a sample of LL Rose 31-the little pump and spring of the atomizer came off in my bag and it must have leaked. No wonder my Ricola taste so bad! So, points for the community project-probably will go light in the AM tomorrow as we have a 7:30 flight to Sacramento.
Also have a spritz of an Atelier Poivre Electrique sample found in my bag on my hand. Not bad but not wow-smells like Jo Malone Oud and Bergamot sprinkled with pepper.

    Hi all!

    1) Recovery continues apace! I sleep A LOT- I have energy to work, to walk during breaks and ride my bike during the day on weekends. But coming into the party season of the year, I find that I need to sleep at night for a good 9+ hours. Party Not so Hearty!

    2) Am in Infusion de Prada Amande, which is perfect.

    3) I can barely squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze back into my 28/27 jeans WITHOUT DISCOMFORT which is nice! Very little exercise (am cleared for mid December) but it is evidence that the fibroids are shrinking off and dying off and that thyroid is back to normal.

Good morning. I have been stupid, given how bad my sleep patterns are. I stayed awake till after 1 last night reading the third in Catherine Fox’s Lindchester series and now I am tired, and it’s self-inflicted. I think the book was worth it, but how daft could I be?

Today’s perfume is Oeillet Bengale. Oh, gorgeous! It’s a scent of childhood summers to me, walking bare footed up a hot concrete path and having to step around the carnations growing all leggy and tall, falling over one another and tangled up, spilling their spicey scent into the shimmering air. I bought some carnations at a florist shop the other day. They had winsome faces, very disciplined stalks and a pleasing but overly polite perfume. I think I prefer the slightly ramshackle, sprawling flowers of my childhood, casting their scent prodigiously all around and about.

Kitten breakfast calls. Eric is supposed to be on an elimination diet — rabbit only. He just won’t eat it. WON’T. Our wonderful vet prescribed an appetite stimulant that was supposed to make rabbit appealing, but he has had a dreadful reaction to the drug, and it didn’t make him eat rabbit. Poor little guy. We’ll get his poor tummy sorted out yet, but it’s a project of some considerable longevity.

    Be well, all.

I wish you could meet them. They are the sweetest things in nature, but naughty. Well, not naughty, just kitten-esque, but the outcome is the same. The house is strewn from one end to the other with toys and blankies and oddities that have caught a passing fancy, and the sitting room furniture has taken on a decidedly angora look. I live in a constant clean mess now, but I wouldn’t change a thing, except to get Eric well.

I bet you’d like Violaceum. The only other I’ve tried from the series was Tenebre, and it was very meh on me. Honestly the only reason I bought a decent is because it shares a name with one of my favorite Dario Argento movies. Which is really a terrible reason.

Still craving cozy scents so I am in Terveer’s Incense. It is a dense, animalic incense, and I love it. If you only like your incense/orientals sheer, or powdery, this is not for you!

But it does give me an idea for a community project. Perfume unicorns. Wear your most obscure scents– scents you believe few have ever tried, let alone own.

PSA: I was searching in vain for Annick Goutal Noël candles on the web last night, and I eventually realized that the limited edition Une Foret d’Ôr in black and gold packaging is probably the classic Noël scent. At least, it has the same notes.

If anyone has sniffed it, please advise. Saks Fifth Avenue has it, and also a festive boxed set of three mixed votives: one Foret d’Or, one Ambre, and one Eau d’Hadrien.

I also found the AG Noël candle in the original packaging on the Celeste Parfums (Netherlands) site. They always have a great AG selection. When I ordered from them a few years ago, they included really nice free samples that compensated for the shipping costs, I felt.

Still using my Scent Bar samples although I might have been through them for now if I hadn’t been sick. It took me a while to get back into even being interested in perfume/candles after I was sick.

Wearing non-perfumes so far this week. Totally White yesterday and Milky Musk today. I actually am really enjoying Milky Musk–fig, musk, and sandalwood. Totally White was a nice clean lilac as well, but I don’t feel a need to own it.

Deva and I went sniffing yesterday at The Perfume House and Fumerie. I smelled Eris Mx (nice) and Fazzolari Ummagumma (too prominent a chocolate note for me) Tauer Attar (too smoky) and Papillon Angelique (too much angelique, I was hoping the name didn’t refer to the plant.) I didn’t buy anything but I’m thinking about the Mx. Today I’m wearing Carnal Flower. Hope I don’t gas out the chorus at rehearsal tonight.

SOTD is Ottoman Empire (2017) by Areej le Doré, from the end of a split that I got in on here recently. This stuff is POTENT. It goes on with tremendous musk, civet, and honey. For awhile it’s all about the rose. Then there’s some white florals, on the skanky side. And subtle out and sandalwood. It’s reminiscent of Amoureuese and one of the Roja Doves (Scandal? Enslaved?), but I’d say even more potent. Whew. You can knock ’em dead with this. But I forgot to say, it’s beautiful! I’m up in the cold north now getting my mom helped with her packing to fly back to Texas with me on Sunday for Christmas and the winter. Our Houston weather has been too warm to try to flaunt this perfume but I’m loving it up in the cold. Please send warm thoughts and crossed paws for my dear cat Xena at home who is over 15 and just not doing very well. A friend and neighbour are stopping in to look out for her and treat her with fluids. It’s not good though. I feel guilty leaving her but I do have obligations to my mother.

I felt a small earthquake in my locale a few minutes ago. They are NOT a common occurrence on the Eastern Seaboard! Philly-area news is confirming that a 5.1 tremor was measured near Dover AFB in Delaware.

SOTD = back to Boucheron Jaipur, to check my reality. Today, it is a lovely and elegant floral with some aldehydes, but nothing like yesterday’s soapfest.

I was in San Francisco for the big quake of 1989, it was 7.3 or something like that. 4.1 is nothing next to that, but probably noticeable to those not raised with earthquakes.
