Wednesday scent of the day 11/22

Posted by Robin on 22 November 2017 260 Comments

Happy Hump Day! And RIP, David Cassidy. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm smelling lovely in Hermès Eau de Néroli Doré. (Hide my credit card from the matching body balm.)

Reminder: 11/24 will be Hide My Credit Card Friday...in honor of Black Friday / Buy Nothing Day, wear a fragrance (presumably from a sample) that you're itching to buy but don't own yet. Suggested by Lovestosmellgood.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Promenade au Faubourg change tray is $630 at Hermès.

I’m wearing delicious, delicious Tabac Aurea — no money saved here, I’m on my second bottle.

I love TA so much. But even on my scent-eating skin it lasts very well, so despite buying it in. . . 2010? 2011? not sure… I still have half a bottle.

That change tray is a LOT of change!

SOTD is just a bit of Tauer Amber Flush Body Oil in my frizzy mop.

I’m upright and headed into work! Thanks to all who sent me toothsome wishes yesterday. My gum is a little bit sore but other than that the bone grafting has been easier than I anticipated. Hoping it continues that way.

Happy Almost Almost Friday Day. Just realizing Black Friday is almost upon us. Egads!

RIP David Cassidy, I am definitely old enough to remember The Partridge Family.
Sotd is Dame New Musk Man, which to me is perfectly unisex and reads as mostly citrus on my skin.
My oldest is on his way home from college today for the first time this fall. I am so excited to have my whole “brood” under one roof for a few days!

Safe travels to everyone on the road or in airports this weekend. People can be frenzied!

Day 5 of Prada Infusion d’Iris absolue. I put away the edp for the winter and pulled out this baby last week. Can’t get enough of that dry iris and subtly sweet benzoin.

Fahrenheit is absolutely the smell of 1990. Good memories.

Coincidentally I watched an episode of detectorists (s2e3) last night in which Fahrenheit was jokingly mentioned. “Can you smell the early 90’s?” Though the actor was spritzing from a bottle that was most certainly not Fahrenheit, lol.

I stopped Twilight after 10 minutes. I am too old for that stuff. Haha.
I only saw Kristen in Adventureland and Snow White and the Huntsman, and have no strong opinion of her. Though I think she is not bad (i am glad not to see a Kardashian or a Hadid for a change).

Karl Lagerfeld picked Cat Power/Chan marshall as one of his muses a decade ago. Now that was a good choice imo! :)

House cousins with Robin in 24, Faubourg. I woke up wondering why I haven’t been wearing this lately, and discovered it’s because I had put the little bottle behind a large, dark bottle of Gucci EDP. Problem solved – 24F now has a place of greater prominence on the perfume shelf.

Big thank you to NSTer Carolyn for Scotland shopping tips! In Glasgow, I found that Fraser’s carries the Dior exclusives in SMALL bottles, so I got a 40(? It’s not actually marked) ml bottle of Feve Delicieuse. They were out of that size in Ambre Nuit, unfortunately, so the SA gave me samples of that, Gris Montaigne and Grand Bal. They also had five new (to me, anyway) that she said were made for the Asian market that were pretty but very light. I have much to discuss with Donatella this quarter, so I have decided I need to up the number of sprays I use at a time in order to justify the sheer volume of perfume in my collection.

Katrina, you’re very welcome – am so glad you managed to find something in Frasers. I wouldn’t have had a clue about the Diors you mention – I haven’t worn Dior since the original Diorissimo – end of a bottle left after a trip back to Scotland by my late aunt way back when, with which I fell totally in love! I’ve just confirmed a visit to my brother near Tampa for March, so am looking forward to popping into Uncommon Finds, & hopefully will also get to the upmarket shopping centre too for a quick look around fragrance departments in Saks/NM/Nordstrom. Off to London next Thursday, but carry-on luggage only, so if I can’t blag samples I won’t be able to purchase anything significant, although I am hoping to introduce my friend to Perfumer H, who were pretty generous with samples last year for me! I hope you enjoyed Glasgow as much as I do every time I visit.

My brother has lived in Lithia near Tampa for a few years now. When I knew I was visiting him earlier this year one of the first things I did was search for ‘independent fragrance stores’ online. Jovoy is indeed on my London ‘to do’ list, if we have time – we do have a lot to cram into the few days we are there, however. My travel buddy is a fairly recent convert to being interested in perfume, having been worn down by many years of sitting having a cuppa or a glass of fizz whilst I discuss the subject in detail – she really got into it a couple of London December trips ago when a lovely lady in Penhaligon’s Regent Street shop bombarded her with samples & she also thoroughly enjoyed our stop-off at Shay & Blue,

You don’t want to say “douche” instead of “shower” in North America. Just thought you might want to know people will be thinking you were sniffing what she used to clean the interior of her lady parts.

Dunno about the Brits, but we use “douche” in NZ in its correct meaning as above, and in the vernacular to mean “idiot”, “creep”, “idiotic creep”, “idiotic, really really really ANNOYING creep”….

I have a minor medical procedure today, so wearing Passage d’Enfer to strike that balance between soothing me and not overwhelming the staff. Several years ago I went in to donate blood while wearing Montale’s Black Oud. I’ll never do THAT again.

Better than the ceiling over the bed-that would be having it really bad! I was more of a Danny Bonaduce fan, maybe because he was close-er to my age.

Oh, good grief. I asked my dad if I could tack it to the ceiling, and he said h**l no. Too hard to patch and repaint a ceiling. I’m sure he was a little grossed out as well.
I had totally forgotten this! Thanks for shining a light onto that memory. ????
I was never a fan of Bonaduce. He had red hair, and with lots of redheads in the fam, there was no fascination. But he sure did get all the wisecracking dialogue.

No scent yet this morning; I’m wallowing in the wafts of lemon blossom drifting around my house. In my ongoing attempts to develop a green thumb (only partially successful), I bought a couple of dwarf Meyer lemon trees a few months back, and set them out on the front stoop. This past week got a bit nippy at night, though, so I’ve brought them inside, and the scent of the blossoms are nothing short of narcotic.

RIP David Cassidy indeed. I was a 14 year old schoolgirl in Surrey when he was huge here in the UK & desperately wanted to go to one of his London gigs at White City, but of course there was no way my parents were going to let me do that! I saw him not that many years ago (feels like it anyway!) in Glasgow & he was just wonderful – most people there were ‘ladies of a certain age’ & he didn’t disappoint at all. My late aunt, who moved to upstate New York from Aberdeen, Scotland in the early 1960s (very brave back then) sent me a full length black & white poster of David in concert wearing his fringed white outfit – it was on my wall for many a long year!

I’m partially following the theme: inspired by the latest Tara’s (A Bottled Rose) review of vintage Miss Dior, I’m wearing it from the rescued for a song bottle of vintage parfum: I hid my card well while I still could buy pre-“originale” version at a store, which I shouldn’t probably regret while I can find a good vintage version – and cheaper.
Has anyone tried it recently? How is it?

I smelled L’Originale in a duty-free shop in July and found it very very dull. I mean, missing all the pointy bits and all the glamor.

I did not like vintage Miss Dior the first three times I tried it; it was extremely sharp and actually tried to stab me ;). It’s still not me, but I came around to finding it quite original and bold and lovely.

I did manage to hop on over to Ulta’s website a few days ago and spend some of that bonus on the Skyn Iceland line. That stuff was on sale and it rarely is so it sealed the deal for me. It does look like Ulta will have some pretty good Black Friday deals.

Going across town tomorrow with hubster and stepson to eat at Luby’s with my dad. My sisters will be in other parts of TX, and I’ll try hard to put on a smile and not miss them too much.

Hubby is helping me bake (always fun) a spice cake for dessert. It will be the start of the first holiday season after losing my mom in March, so I’m just leaning into all the feelings as they come.

We’ve much to be grateful for: houses are being fixed, we have new pups to love, my arm is mending and hearts are slowly healing. Things are looking up!

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

Wearing Prada Candy from that decant I couldn’t resist last week (OOPS guess I am opposite the theme).

Just made cranberry sauce and sweet potato casserole. Ham goes in the oven later today; turkey breast tomorrow morning. My mom is making the pies, so I don’t have to do that. My doesn’t-like-to-cook MIL* is bringing deviled eggs and her 7-layer lettuce salad.

*(MIL is the sweetest lady in the world, but not its best cook. She once made barbecue chicken by putting a whole chicken, cut up, in her slow cooker with a jar of BBQ sauce. There was a solid inch of grease on top of the dish at dinner. ???? I am thankful for her presence AND for the fact that she is not making her asparagus/hard-boiled egg/mayo and velveeta casserole tomorrow.)

My SIL complained that her spice cake didn’t taste like my spice cake, even though she used my recipe. She said there were really hard things in it. Apparently I had written “allspice” and “cloves” and she didn’t know that she should use the ground kind.

I’m propped up on a mattress under sleeping bags on the living room floor ( my mother is visiting ) looking at a mist shrouded garden, bright red rata tree and two glossy tuis . I have a sample of bracken and would love a bottle …I’m matching the perfume to adventurer/ explorer Raureka. Raureka ( Ngati Wairangi ) was the first person to cross the NZ alps . She travelled alone up a bush clad west coast river, over a high snowy mountain pass, and down to the east coast. This happened around 1650-1700. She carried pounamu ( greenstone ) with her and the members of the east coast tribes (ngai Tahu) saw it, realised how great it was as an adze, and made her show them where it came from…thus opening up the Greenstone Trails ( and a very bad time for the Ngati Wairangi ). Anyway, bracken is perfect.

Morning, all. It’s Exam Board day. Three hours of tense tedium, followed by a massive curriculum review meeting. Ah well, I chose to stay… I’m attempting to make the day go better by wearing a pink-and-grey checked dress and 31 Rue Cambon. The dear man looked at me with a quizzical expression and asked if school uniforms were back in fashion. He’s right: this dress does have something of a school uniform vibe going on,, though no school I’ve ever heard of dressed its pupils in pale pink, added and let them wear a shaped, dipped hem. I wonder if this dress was A Mistake? Oh well. I’ll work it out.

What definitely is NOT a mistake is 31. As ever, it is warm without being overwhelming, assertive without being overbearing, and elegant without being even a little bit overwrought. Some perfumes are gifts to the human race: surely 31 RC is one such?

OK. Now to face forward into my day. It is so nice to write a post and have confidence that it won’t disappear. It’s not that I think my posts are deathless prose or anything, but it was frustrating to chat away about a perfume and find that my enthusiasm melted away into some darl cupboard guarded by the technology demons. Becwell, all

Hello peoples. Very busy at the moment.

SOTD is Nobilis 1942 “Rudis” and on Monday was Amouage “Interlude Man”, both very much on theme for this week. Yesterday was Huitieme Art “Fareb”, never tried before and won’t look for it again.

TOMK and I have made an offer for a place in Malaga; survey turned up a water leak issue so that is holding things up as we negotiate with the vendors.

Work is crazy; half my colleagues are resigning this month so stress levels will be high for the next few weeks. My own role will change to something I am more used to so I’m okay personally with the changes. (Well, in theory anyway.) In any case, I only have another 4 weeks to go until breaking for Christmas, and then it’s a 2 month sprint to the finish line.

Unscented again today. I’ve thoroughly misplaced my fragrance mojo while feeling particularly gutted by a bit of family ruckus a few weeks ago. Tempest in a teapot and all that, but sometimes it is the drama from familiar quarters which we expect least and suffer most.

In any case it is a relief to look up from the mire, to wish a happy Thanksgiving to those who will observe the day tomorrow, and to send a hug to every NSTer. You make the world more beautiful.

Sadly, the news for my baby Lucy is not good. She has a severe infection in her leg. No way to know what caused it, although we speculate it may have been from her leg band (that the breeder puts on) rubbing or scraping her and it got infected. The worst of it was high up under her feathers, which is why we didn’t notice until the rest of the foot/leg started swelling. Regardless, 3/4 of her leg is covered in infection. The doctor opened it, cleaned out the infection and dead tissue, stitched it and wrapped it up, and put a collar on her to keep her from picking at it. His exact words were, “I don’t have a lot of hope that she will use that leg again, and I do not have much hope in general for her long term.” We are giving her antibiotics and pain meds and will take her back Friday to get the dressing changed and see if the sutures are holding. I am devastated. Truly sick and have cried and cried. Thank you all so much for your kinds words yesterday, they gave me comfort.

Sorry for diatribe on a topic other than perfume. I am in D600 today (hide my wallet). I have hajusurri to thank for introducing me to this one. It will be mine one day!

My credit card suffered a triple-strength, extra-long workout this week (home repairs) and is lying, spent, at the bottom of my handbag, vowing to never let itself be so roughly used again. No way it’ll even rear its little head on Black Friday…

But no matter; I have plenty of perfume to wear so need to stop sniveling and just get on with it.
