Wednesday scent of the day 11/15

Posted by Robin on 15 November 2017 207 Comments

Hump Day, plus Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Comme des Garçons Andy Warhol's You're In.

Reminder: 11/17 will be Dealer's Choice: propose a theme for a Friday community project, and wear a fragrance that fits your theme. (Another repeat — we did this in 2015.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Cruel Gardenia
Lots of Guerlains for my dealers choice so far this week!

Tea is St Petersburg by Kusmi from a very generous NSTer. Tea always warms my heart

This is one of the few Guerlains I have not tried. Would you agree that it is cruel – what is your opinion on this one?

I think you should take a sniff and I am not sure what your definition of “cruel” is.

The one thing I will say, and I am sure many of you will not agree, but my real problem with the L’Art et la Matiere collection from Guerlain is that they don’t last on my skin. I have a full bottle of Angelique Noire, samples of a few from this collection (the only one I have not tried is Joyeuse Tubereuse) and hours into the development they fade into a skin scent on me. Bois d”Armenie I can hardly detect, and I know that some have gone through reformulations but still, at 260 a pop, that is a lot of money for a skin scent. I put Cruel Gardenia on at 8am this morning and when I sat down to answer your question and put my nose to my wrist I can tell you that it has completely faded. On the other hand, this could make this collection really great for some who likes to apply and apply all day long ( I am looking at you CM8 who finished a bottle of Sisley in less than a month) and that is really great for finishing bottles. My AN bottle is less than half way gone because of this reason. sorry for the long response!!!

and right now I am laughing hysterically in my office…yup, I am the re-apply monster but I doubt I would be doing that with a fragrance that is 260 a pop-LOL!

Cruel Gardenia doesn’t last on me either. I have older bottles of Cuir Beluga and Angelique Noire that last all day on me, so I think it could be partly a reformulation problem. But another friend bought Cuir Beluga when it first came out and it didn’t last on her either, so it could also be skin chemistry. I agree I would not spend that much on something that didn’t last all day.

Cruel Gardenia never did last, even when it was new. AN and CB, on the other hand, last like plutonium (in a good way).

Continuing my week of wearing neglected beauties ( not worn to date in 2017)
I have Mohur EDP on one side, and extrait on the other.
Unfortunately, I can only catch the occasional whiff as my cold has blossomed overnight.

How funny, I put on a dab of You’re In last night and was thinking how competent it was. Lemony without evoking cleaners, a whiff of metallic sheen…. Not nearly cool enough for the packaging though!

Today I’m wearing vintage Bellodgia EdT, which is absolutely gorgeous. I just bought another bottle of vintage on eBay (I’m sorry if any of you were bidding on it!). Creamy and spicy, floral and musky. One day I’ll have to pony up for vintage parfum to try it.

Yes, exactly — competent, maybe a little tiny nod to the pun. It’s fine, but can see no reason to buy it other than wanting the bottle.

You smell way better than I do!

I didn’t like You’re In at all – got lots of metallic bitter something or other. But I didn’t need it anyway!

But it ought to be bitter & metallic, right? It would be sort of sad if it was just a “plain” citrus cologne given the backstory? I did find it wearable though.

I haven’t really been paying attention to the theme. On Sunday, I pull out several decants, samples, minis etc. and put them in a net bag in a box where I keep things away from the cats. Then I choose from those. Up today is my mini of Knot.

What are those models wearing on the picture? Looks like they are walking around in some kind of sleeping bag dresses….mmm warm and cosy 🙂

My sotd is Poison, the esprit de parfum variant.
Its rounder, milder / less harsh than how I remember the version my mother wore in the 80s, also less loud than the current edt.

So this version is kinda cosy actually, but at the same time it also made me wear a long dark grey skirt and dark red lipstick. Haha. You dont wear Poison, Poison wears you. 😉

The model on the left looks like she’s wearing the couch from my college dorm suite, ca. 1987.

Speaking of 1987… Poison! It haunted every girls’ dorm that year and even the university buses.

Ha, you dont need a couch with a dress like that 🙂

1987… I was still in elementary/primary school, so not wearing perfume myself yet (though I always wanted to sniff the bottles on my mothers vanity).
But my teachers wore all the big and loud scents in those days, (and blue eyeshadow and shoulderpads of course!)

That’s true and I have not been inside The Dover Street Market! Those places tend to intimidate me since I am not going to buy anything, or even pretend I can, though they do carry perfume… Will have to check it out one of these days. Though I don’t think I’ll have the good fortune to meet and try on above attire even there. That type of runway fare is not usually meant to be sold in stores or actually worn anyway.

Are they dresses? Or are they coats? I tried to look up the prices, but couldn’t find them.

can’t imagine anyone actually wearing those items. It has to be an artistic exercise that highlights trends – like maybe thicker tulip style coats will become fashionable

And the SOS scouring pad oompah-loompa hair?

      So many questions…

Still wandering in the woods. Today I’m in the Pacific Northwest – SOTD is House of Matriarch “Future’s Past” from the Twin Peaks collection: “sandarac, tamarack, balsam, evergreens (mainly Douglas Fir)”. Yep. I’ve enjoyed all the scents in this collection. They’re a bit milder than her usual, easier to wear.

I am guessing that you enjoy HoM offerings? I looked into them when I was very interested in naturals but their prices are quite high..there is enough out there for me to explore so I let that one go…what else have you sampled? Coco Blanc seems to have a cult following.

Yes, the list prices are high but she has frequent sales, and purchases earn points quickly which go toward discounts on your next purchases. Which still doesn’t make the scents inexpensive, just closer to bearable…

I have one FB (Devotion: incense/oud) and several mini’s (Sex Magic [stupid name] : cedar/sandalwood/oud, Epiphany : lavender/champaca/lily, the Twin Peaks set, and Bittersweet Symphony : chocolate/woods/spices/oud [you’re welcome for the earworm]).

I was surprised to like all of them. I’d describe them as:

        Future’s Past: forest-y
The Red Room: woodsy, mild spicy
World of Blue: strong iris (orris), woody and spicy

All are more mild and more easily wearable (without scaring civilians) than many of her other bombshell scents.

Very rainy today. And I have that new patient MD appt (I cancelled the one on Monday as he had quite a few poor reviews) – found someone better suited I think. Also, cooking turkeys for DH’s company potluck at noon today.

Went with 1000 Flowers Reglisse Noire, an old favorite for comfort and fun.

I came very late to the LL party (probably 2010), but I do enjoy it!

Memoir baffled me so much I had to try it again. And again. And WTH-IS-it? again. By the ninth try, it was love.

My 2 theme options for my SOTD which is Goest Perfume Smoke & Violets : ” The Urge to Splurge”- wear a perfume whose price ticked you off but you caved anyway. It was $35 for the 5ml splash (the only available size).
“Lonesome Dove”- wear a perfume that no one on NST has tried. I love this one but it’s a lonely experience not being able to compare notes with others ???? Someone here should try it and make a girl happy!

          • Elisa P says:
            15 November 2017 at 1:57 pm

The smoke smells smokey, like the very last whiffs of a dying fire-but not bbq smokey. It actually has more prominent (black) leather to me. The violet isn’t sweet but not green. More heliotrope-powdery with only a hint of sweetness and a hint of soap. It maybe sounds more harsh than it is, but there’s something comforting about this one to me.
Come out to Bklyn and I’ll let you sniff it ????????

I’m in TF Grey Vetiver today. It’s from a sample my guy got at Sephora this past weekend but he doesn’t care for it. He loves Sycomore and wanted to try other vetiver but said this one smelled like soap. I’m guessing it’s the orris. For me, it’s wearable but nothing special.

Maybe a theme of a perfume your significant other or a friend doesn’t like that you wear anyway?

My husband said the same…”its too soapy”.
I tried it a few times as well and i like it, especially in summer when weather is hot and I need something office friendly. But i dont need a bottle of it, there are more exciting vetivers out there!

I dont think there is a single bottle in my collection my husband does not like. My friends hardly comment on my perfumes. When they do its positive. Maybe they dont have the guts to tell me if they dislike it 🙁

I mentioned vanilla scents in the weekend poll, and several people suggested VCA Orchidee Vanille to me. I realized today that I actually have a sample of it (in a VCA sample pack I eBay-ed in order to have a little more Muguet Blanc) so I’m wearing it for day 3 of Vanilla Week. This goes on like bubblegum, but it’s actually kind of nice once it calms down, though still a bit sweet and girly for me.

Started listening to Christmas music today. Too early? I don’t care, the season goes so quickly anyway.
Met a new perfume friend here at work yesterday. We walked to the subway together and shopping came up including fragrance. He sure knows his stuff, and talked a lot about layering.

Speaking of, now that the perfume trading sites, to my knowledge, are done, where is the best place to recycle the ones I just don’t use anymore? Can I donate them to the local church, like I do clothes, or are there restrictions on this kind of thing, even though perfume spray bottles are pretty untamperable…
    Thoughts, anyone?

SOTD is People of the Labyrinths “Luctor et Emergo”.

Notes are green grass, white flowers, vanilla, almond, sour cherry and precious wood.

My personal theme this week is “try something that has been intriguing me” and POTL-L&M has caught my attention though people talking about it here. Anyway, on me it’s pleasant but not compelling.

It sounds good from the notes. A lot of your perfume choices would go on my intriguing list…the Beauforts, Hylnd, Arso etc. I was reading about a gallery that specialises in video art in Dusseldorf and thought of you. Have you finished there now?

Still in Dusseldorf, to my surprise. The programme continues to teeter on the edge of complete collapse and there’s a lot of churn in the team. But I’m ok to stay with it until the New Year.

I’m limited by tax laws in how much time I can spend in Germany this year (that is, I can stay as long as I like if I do’t mind becoming a German taxpayer!). So I’ve not really had the chance to go to any museums or take time off in the city.

If you like video art check out Nastio Mosquito from Angola http://nastiomosquito.com/#

I used to be ambivalent about video as art but his stuff made me laugh and made me think. Come to think of it, there are often good video installations in the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham. https://ikon-gallery.org/

Wearing Glamour Yeti . It starts in a rather fearsome manner, the ambergris pretty similar to their smoked ambergris. For a while the ambergris stomps over the scent but then a little bit of cinnamon raises its head. I need to wear it more often before reaching a final opinion but at this point I would say that it is slightly off-balance: the ambergris is too heavy and the ginger is too thin, and the cinnamon is too weak. It almost seems like it is a mixture of already existing scents ( in a literal sense). If you like smoked ambergris you will like this probably, but not need it. I have a sample of the other neon creature and I will try that later. I like smell bent a lot but sometimes feel they need to pay more attention to detail and just go a little bit further in ‘finishing’ their scents, just to take out the roughness which can seem like ‘rough enough is good enough’. But that’s also their charm. Anyway, I like Yeti because I love ambergris.

My theme is “love at first sniff”. Yesterday’s choice: Gris Clair. I first opened my sample during a time of great personal turmoil and I felt like the universe had just reached out, taken my hand and said “it’s going to be OK”. Ordered within 30 minutes of opening the vial.

Today’s choice: Lonesome Rider. I ordered a sample when Andy Tauer was trying his “name your sample price” experiment, spritzed twice and had ordered a bottle within an hour. Love love love.

Maybe this theme should be “poor impulse control” instead of “love at first sniff”? Oh well, I still adore all of my quick buys.

I have tried both. For the original price, Missions is a good substitute. However, I do not feel it comes close to SDV. They both are boozy – Missions is a vanilla with a slight touch of booze. SDV to me is rum soaked vanilla.

Thought I already commented, but I don’t see it. Apologies if this ends up being a dupe.

My theme is meh then love. Today is Poudre de Riz. I still find the immediate top notes to be harsh, but then it becomes a snuggly skin scent that I quite love. That’s pretty common for me. I seem to be overly sensitive to anything I perceive as harsh or sharp right at the beginning.

That’s a great theme idea! Felt that way about Naja. First 5 minutes after application was “What? Nothing special…” and then it came to life like a 3D movie and had me all gaga-googly-eyed. It was definitely Love. Now if I could win the lottery…????

Day 3 of tea & spices week.

I’m in Agua de Colonia Concentrada. The geranium in this reads as peppery/spicy to me. The longevity is better than I would expect from a cologne. I think this one may replace 4711 as the classic eau de cologne-style scent in my collection.

The dresses in the pic are interesting but definitely something only a skinny person could/would wear. I don’t need any help being lumpy, thank you.

    SOTD is Bottega Veneta.

Today’s SOTD is Chanel’s vintage No 22 eau de cologne for a full day of HR and committee meetings.
Looking forward to my afternoon meeting, we are celebrating three birthdays. My contribution is a gluten-free almond torte and mixed berries with mint leaves and creme fraiche.
The recipe is Chez Panisse’s almond torte, to make it GF, I substituted GF flour mix from King Arthur.

I also make a gluten (and grain) free banana nut bread. Awesome and healthy with very little sugar, and you can’t tell that it’s good for you.

The less sugar the best. I am not so crazy about sweets. Once in a while I indulge myself in some. I am sure your banana nut bread is woderful!

My trick is I freeze the bananas, it raises the sugar content and when they are thawed, the liquid also goes into the bread, making it more moist.
I use a mixture of almond flour, ground flax seed and psillium husk.

My theme ended up being twofold today. The main objective was to pick a perfume from a box I haven’t gone into in a while, and then I landed on one that matched my outfit. I’m wearing Serge Lutens L’eau Froide from a sample. I actually really like it! I have only sampled it once before.

L’Eau Froide is the only one of the Serge Eaux that I liked. I call it my summer incense.

I’m so late today! Wearing an old Yves Rocher perfume, Miel. A very pretty sort of Orange Blossom Honey. Discontinued long ago, but I found it (and another bottle, who knew?) as I’ve been clearing out decants and bottles I never seem to wear. I did the same several months ago, but somehow forgot about another drawer that turns out to be filled with stuff. Huh.

Dealer’s choice theme for today: “Smells like someone I know”. SOTD = the original Black Opium EdP, from the sample stash. I think of lillyjo every time I see it mentioned.

I forgot to mention that I sniffed the new Tiffany scent @ Macy’s over the weekend. Did not care for it at all. It was artificial fruit and too sweet to my nose.

Oy! At least I made it today. I had to unexpectedly work on a super-confidential project until late and of course today, I had to make up for what I did not do yesterday – it’s a vicious cycle.

SOTD = 31 Rue Cambon EDT

Wear a perfume with a number or wear a perfume named after a street address

    SOTD yesterday = Bvlgari Black

    Wear:
    – a discontinued perfume
    – something you bought at a discount
    – a perfume for which you have at least one backup bottle and do tell how many BUB you have of that perfume
    – the Rainbow Connection (wear a fragrance with the name of a color on the rainbow spectrum, black or white)

Long day, just got home and of course, checked in to see what everybody was wearing today. I wore Penhaligon’s Elixir. Sorta spicy, sorta flowery, sorta incense-y. I like it, it smells good on me, but it doesn’t wow me. I would describe it as solidly wearable and really pleasant. It’s much like my luck with the entire line – which has been good, but not great.
