Wednesday scent of the day 11/8

Posted by Robin on 8 November 2017 199 Comments

Hey, it's Hump Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Jean Paul Gaultier Ma Dame for Graham Parker covering the Jackson 5's I Want You Back.

Reminder: 11/10 will Playlist Friday...name a favorite song, and wear a perfume that fits the song. (Yes, I loved this project so much, we're doing it again. If you want to see the first one, it's here.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Love that song!!! Nina simone’s version is still my favourite version.

Not familiar with the fragrance you are wearing, but I looked up the notes and seems like a perfect match!

Do you like orange blossom? Next time you pass by a Guerlain counter give it a whiff if you do. But its more than that and a perfect fragrance to lift the mood and help you feel good!

Netflix put out a documentary on Nina, well done and she lead a sad but eventful life. To Love Somebody is also up there as my favorite. The version of Sinner Man from the movie the Thomas Crown affair is a really good one also. I can go on and on but will stop here.
One more, the live version of Just in Time.

          Yes I like orange blossom!

‘Be my husband’ is also a favourite here. And I also like this version (by the brilliant Shara Nova, formerly known as Shara worden)

I know its not swap season, but I have an non-perfume related swap. I have two brand new face products from the Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension Spheres and Azelaic Acid (no box but sealed) that have never been opened or used. I had to stop using The Ordinary line because it aggravated my PD. If anyone wants these or to swap for a small sample let me know. Cheers.

Well a sale scent- Bucoliques de Provence by l’artisan today. Tea is Peets chai and weather is cool, which I love because I can wear a cashmere and silk scarf I love but seldom wear because it is so warm. No song comes to mind as Peets sound system is playing.

Scent of the day is Fracas! For the joyful cacophony of Beyoncé’s Countdown.

I accidentally overapplied immediately before I put on my down coat, so I guess it will also be my scent of the entire winter.

Its cold! Temperatures are moving towards freezing point all of a sudden. Brrrr.
So Black Orchid it is, by Tom Ford this smells best to/on me when its cold outside. One spray is enough for daytime wear.

    And the song?

Something cool, vibrant, colourful, upbeat and uplifting, with a very small dash of weird…

Opinions vary, and I always get mixed up — I *think* I liked the EdT better because the EdP was not as sharp in the opening and I like the sharp opening. Hope I have that right!

I didn’t know there was a film so can’t make a rec on that one way or the other. But their music is one of my favorite things to listen to while on long car trips (or short ones). It’s mostly very happy, and somewhat … muscular, if that makes any sense. Nothing at all like Enya, for example.

I like it too! Pretty much all of these in-store samples I enjoy wearing because they’re ones that I either (by now) own bottles of, or they’re on my full bottle list, with a few exceptions.

This one really reminds me of Musc Tonkin, which I already own, so this one might be an exception in that I don’t feel I need it. The opening of New Sibet is different than the MT, but within like ten minutes on my skin the two are very similar.

I also feel it’s similar in style to Maai, which I also own.

Never tried Maai but I can see the Musc Tonkin connection-the horse stable earthiness. Though I was never quite comfortable wearing MT. Have you ever tried Charenton Macerations Eye Hatshepsut? I put thst in the same “dirty musk” category.

“Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning, and the first thing that I knew
There was milk and toast and honey and a bowl of oranges, too
And the sun poured in like butterscotch and stuck to all my senses”

The sun is pouring in. Tea for two post shower, me thinks.

Robin, I think you said you don’t wear this one too often and might vote it off the island…unless I mixed up comments. Why don’t you reach for this one do you think? Let me know if you’d like to rehome your bottle and I will make you a semi-princely offer… ???? But really let me know.

Gris is so effortlessly pretty. Your repose to lillyjo made me think of my hay days back in the eighties. Regan was president and I wore rhinestone costume jewelry to work. SotD = Bvlgari Black

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
    All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

I rarely wear Black because it dampens my sense of smell for the rest of the day. I like it a lot though, at least partially because my son uses hair products that smell similar.

My son is caregiver to a parrot, so the hyacinth macaw up top made me smile. Our family has loving, wonderful, memorable, and happy experiences with birds — though it is worth mentioning that parrots are a lifelong commitment. Also they are naturally loud/messy/destructive, and any bird with a beak will bite, sometimes quite badly.

But back to the music & fragrance notes — I see Bvlgari Black’s round bottle and it’s smooth scent as centered, complete, calming. Likewise there is a gentle precision and polish in Blackbird that is soothing. And I like the idea that McCartney’s lyrics hint at each person’s potential to find transcendence.

Hey Robin , I’ll join you with Graham Parker: Watch the Moon Come Down paired with All Good Things. Yesterday we had snow on the hills, today my son’s school year is finished for summer ( until February though he still has exams). I would have been listening to Graham Parker when I was his age and I can still sing many of the songs. I think I read in some science article (as in a science article that might be in Vogue ) that the songs we heard as teenagers are the ones that stick in our memories…true in my case.

SOTD is Amouage Library Collection Opus VIII, which is pretty marvellous stuff. The combination of the white florals with ginger (a very spicy note here) is just beautiful and intoxicating. It develops a lot as you wear it and so I’m waiting for the softer benzoin note to come into its own. I guess I might just connect this one up with the song “I feel pretty!”

A small enabler pin to Jiji for the Hinoki shower gel comment on Monday. I was in Williamsburg and had to go in to the Le Labo store. Small travel size gel purchased. (Followed by a quick stop in Muji to buy another pen…I’m obsessed with the ones that have brown ink.

Crazy busy at the moment, so here are my first three SOTDs for this week.

    Monday:
“I saw him dancin’ there by the record machine
I knew he must a been about seventeen
    The beat was goin’ strong
    Playin’ my favorite song
An’ I could tell it wouldn’t be long”

Parfums de Marly “Hamdani” – the leather thug. I loved this song when 17 was an age to aspire to (the lyrics would be very creepy if I sang them now!).

    Tuesday:
    “In the jungle,
    the mighty jungle,
    the lion sleeps tonight”

Parfumerie Générale Collection Croisière “Jangala” – a floral fresh coconutty thing that wold be better if it lasted longer. I detest the song but it started playing in my head as soon as I saw the sample label.

    Wednesday:
“I’m a fool to want you,
I’m a fool to want you,
    to want a love that can’t be true;
a love that’s there for others too.”

Maria Candida Gentile “Lady Day” – supposedly a bitter green floral; I thought it rather mild and a little skanky. I wore the perfume for the name (Billie Holiday’s nickname) rather than because I love her music which, like the perfume, seems like something someone else would enjoy better.

It would be creepy, since no one would know what a record machine is anymore, lol

Late today! I’m testing something from the sample stash today, so no song to do along with my SOTD.

SOTD = J’Adore L’Or essence de parfum. This flanker surpasses its parent in my book. Many thanks to the NSTer who sent me this little gem… I don’t think that I would have ever tried it on my own.

That sounds nice! I have the edt, does it have better staying power?
I tried the Gardenia but it got quite sweet on me, not my cuppa tea.

Well, the original J’Adore lasts forever and a day on me, and projects like nobody’s business. It’s like a modern day Giorgio. The J’Adore L’Or is much quieter to me, but has lasted a solid 9 – 10 hours on me. I’m still getting gentle whiffs of it. I do have scent glue skin, so YMMV.

Really late to the party, my SOTD is Sikkim by Lancome, dry, spicy leather/chypre. Perfect for today’s cooler weather!

lilyjo, it’s really gorgeous and elegant. Along the same feel as Magie Noire but without the dry white floral notes that MN has.
Feel free to pm me at l detrich at yahoooooo dot com with your address if you’d like a sample.

Late today, because this week has been so PACKED. Sigh. Not just with work things–my rehearsal schedules are ramping up as my shows are coming closer. Extracurriculars are harder when a commute is involved.

The flawless Iris Ukiyoe is my sotd. This will seem like an odd pairing to most, I think–it seems odd to me–but (and this is a reverse pick, where I wore IU and then thought of what song it reminds me of) its accompanying song is Brandy’s “Full Moon,” from waaaay back in my childhood, in 2002! For those of you who have forgotten it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgZz4L1UmxE It’s a pretty great song, especially when you’re a 14-year-old whose parents don’t like her listening to pop music. Or dating.

It’s late and I am too tired and lazy to think of a song for my SOTD, Five O’Clock Au Gingembre. Although, I’m sure there is a good pairing out there.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

I probably have 5-6 wears left before the bottle goes kaput and this makes me so happy. I already have BUB 1 waiting in the wings.

I needed spine strengthening today and No.19 worked it’s charm!

I have to report in for jury duty tomorrow. I wonder what fragrance to wear. I don’t think there’s a policy on not wearing perfumes mwahahahaha.

Good luck with jury duty tomorrow. The one time I did it, the experience wasn’t bad at all.

No music pairing but I’ve got Prada Infusions d’Iris EDP. It seems a bit lighter than the Absolue, but the EDP is from a small dab on bottle.

Long week so far, isn’t it Friday yet?
