Hey, it's Hump Day! What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm wearing Jean Paul Gaultier Ma Dame for Graham Parker covering the Jackson 5's I Want You Back.
Reminder: 11/10 will Playlist Friday...name a favorite song, and wear a perfume that fits the song. (Yes, I loved this project so much, we're doing it again. If you want to see the first one, it's here.)
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Dragonfly out in the sun you know what I mean, don’t you know
Butterflies all havin’ fun you know what I mean
Sleep in peace when day is done
That’s what I mean..
Nina Simone
SOTD MON PRÉCIEUX NECTAR! Smell’n Good!
Tea: Nocturne Oriental
second day of sampling DrH foundation and so far no irritation. Have a blessed day everyone.
Love that song!!! Nina simone’s version is still my favourite version.
Not familiar with the fragrance you are wearing, but I looked up the notes and seems like a perfect match!
Do you like orange blossom? Next time you pass by a Guerlain counter give it a whiff if you do. But its more than that and a perfect fragrance to lift the mood and help you feel good!
Netflix put out a documentary on Nina, well done and she lead a sad but eventful life. To Love Somebody is also up there as my favorite. The version of Sinner Man from the movie the Thomas Crown affair is a really good one also. I can go on and on but will stop here.
One more, the live version of Just in Time.
Yes I like orange blossom!
‘Be my husband’ is also a favourite here. And I also like this version (by the brilliant Shara Nova, formerly known as Shara worden)
https://youtu.be/7ZZzta8YsLo
Love this! Thank you for sharing
you smell wonderful. my Guerlain SA says this is his best-seller.
I think I will join you, I love MPN. Just bought a backup bottle, in case of reformulation. Got burned on Gourmand Coquin so now I’m wary.
I know its not swap season, but I have an non-perfume related swap. I have two brand new face products from the Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension Spheres and Azelaic Acid (no box but sealed) that have never been opened or used. I had to stop using The Ordinary line because it aggravated my PD. If anyone wants these or to swap for a small sample let me know. Cheers.
ok..claimed.
Well a sale scent- Bucoliques de Provence by l’artisan today. Tea is Peets chai and weather is cool, which I love because I can wear a cashmere and silk scarf I love but seldom wear because it is so warm. No song comes to mind as Peets sound system is playing.
You smell great!
Scent of the day is Fracas! For the joyful cacophony of Beyoncé’s Countdown.
I accidentally overapplied immediately before I put on my down coat, so I guess it will also be my scent of the entire winter.
Heh. I once put on a dab of Portrait of a Lady immediately before I grabbed my wool coat, and that sucker lasted a MONTH. Just on the cuffs of my coat.
Maybe it will provide extra protection from the cold.
Fracas, yay.
CdG Avignon. I saw it yesterday in the comments. My pairing is Mozart’s Requiem.
Oh, I haven’t sung that in years. So gorgeous.
You sung it?! In chorus or solo? Cool either way.
Chorus.
Best part of the requiem to sing!!
great pairing!
Perfect pairing!
Its cold! Temperatures are moving towards freezing point all of a sudden. Brrrr.
So Black Orchid it is, by Tom Ford this smells best to/on me when its cold outside. One spray is enough for daytime wear.
And the song?
Something cool, vibrant, colourful, upbeat and uplifting, with a very small dash of weird…
Goldfrapp – Number 1
https://youtu.be/gzfaJRDfveo
And afternoon tea = st petersbourg (kusmi)
Perfect for colder autumn and winter days!
My favourite Kusmi!
you smell wonderful! and I like your tea too.
putting that tea on my to try list!
I am wearing the last drop of vintage Bois des Iles and the song is Una Notte a Napoli by Pink Martini.
I just snagged a small decant of Bois des Iles edp and am wearing it today.
Time for more Pink Martini. Thanks!
Great song!!! Love it!
I love Pink Martini!
It’s nice to see them mentioned by others.
Very, very busy so far this week. Wearing ELDO Jasmin et Cigarette and drinking tons of coffee. Nice combination that it is working as needed!
Very good luck to you — hope you get it all done!
Thank you, Robin!
JeC + tons of coffee is a winner in my book. It’s almost Friday…
It works for sure!
I’m no schoolboy but I know what I like
Ambre Fetiche Annick Goutal

Bear, you smell great! Ambre Fetiche is so so beautiful and perfect for this time of year
Thank you, Lovestosmellgood!
I agree ????% !!
????
I just got a decant of L’Ombre Dans L’Eau and I’m wearing it for the first time. I think I’m in LOVE!
It’s wonderful, isn’t it? You smell great!
YUM. Are you trying EdT or EdP?
My decant is the edt. Is the edp better?
Opinions vary, and I always get mixed up — I *think* I liked the EdT better because the EdP was not as sharp in the opening and I like the sharp opening. Hope I have that right!
I agree that the EDT has a sharper opening!
Good then. So Priscilla, if you want a softer green opening, try the EdP.
Gorgeous, one of my absolute favourites!
I LOVE that one! You smell great.
I adore that one, I have the EDT and really love that razor sharp opening!
A slightly softer and less pricey version is Clarins Eau des Jardins.
“She walked up to me and she asked me to dance, I asked her name and in a dark brown voice, she said Lola, L O L
A Lola”. The Kinks. One of the best rock songs ever. I matched it with IMO, one of the best perfumes, Noir de Noir. My very last spray:(.

I have a 4ml of noir de noir for you.
Email me at vivienneell in the land of aol and I will send to you.
Oh wow, cool. Will do so after work tonight. Thanks!
Just reading the lyric makes me smile
I owed you at least a smile for the great laugh you gave me yesterday!
Ha, consider the debt repaid!
My all time favorite Kinks song is “Better Things”
thank you for your song suggestion yesterday…I happened to have loved the Stray Cats…saw them in concert in a very small dive in the early 80s…I will admit I had a huge crush on Brian Setzer!
Oh good, I was hoping you would see it. I thought it would match with Hepcat pretty well.
Wonderful! Big love for the kinks!
Awesome, I feel like sometimes they get lost in the sea of big bands from the same time.
A big yes to both!!
Glad you agree!
Oh this song brings back some memories
We sang this in music class in school! Also ‘Proud Mary’
Our music teacher playing this on his honky tonk piano
Wow, in school! I remember singing The Rose in choir, but not much else in popular music.
Lola is brilliant on so many levels. You sound and smell great!
It really is. Right from the intro.
SOTD is Lostmarc’h Iroaz, and the musical pairing that comes to mind is Sunshine on Leith by The Proclaimers.
Did not know the song or the film — have you seen it, should I add it to my watch list?
I didn’t know there was a film so can’t make a rec on that one way or the other. But their music is one of my favorite things to listen to while on long car trips (or short ones). It’s mostly very happy, and somewhat … muscular, if that makes any sense. Nothing at all like Enya, for example.
Fall finally decided to arrive today so it’s Maison Margiela Replica Jazz Club underneath a dab of Bvlgari Jasmin Noir L’essence. Song: Smashing Pumpkins 1979. It’s going to be a good day.
A good day indeed!

Scent to Match – Uncle Serge’s Encens et Lavande
Such a beautiful voice.
and what a loss
Another day, another sample. New Sibet.
I kind of like the iris-goat fur in that. What do you think of it?
I like it too! Pretty much all of these in-store samples I enjoy wearing because they’re ones that I either (by now) own bottles of, or they’re on my full bottle list, with a few exceptions.
This one really reminds me of Musc Tonkin, which I already own, so this one might be an exception in that I don’t feel I need it. The opening of New Sibet is different than the MT, but within like ten minutes on my skin the two are very similar.
I also feel it’s similar in style to Maai, which I also own.
Never tried Maai but I can see the Musc Tonkin connection-the horse stable earthiness. Though I was never quite comfortable wearing MT. Have you ever tried Charenton Macerations Eye Hatshepsut? I put thst in the same “dirty musk” category.
hmm no, I haven’t. I’ll check it out, thanks!
AFter reading the descriptions I was afraid to try it. How is it?
Just saw your reply. Musc Tonkin was too skanky for me, so this will be a pass for me too.
Yeah, definite pass then. Steer clear!
Nice one!
Only tried it once and quite liked it! I need to dig out ny sample, this one could work even better in cold weather.
I really like New Sibet. It makes me feel like the chicest of hippies.
I’m wearing Eau des Merveilles and pairing it with Portishead’s Dummy album, especially the song “Sour Times”.
Happy Wednesday!
Perfect!
The drydown is sour on my skin.
YMMV
????
I haven’t listened to the album in many many moons..
“Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning, and the first thing that I knew
There was milk and toast and honey and a bowl of oranges, too
And the sun poured in like butterscotch and stuck to all my senses”
The sun is pouring in. Tea for two post shower, me thinks.
love Joni Mitchell.
Love Tea for Two!
I am listening to Reckless Daughter, new book about Joni Mitchell right now. Her songs are rolling over me like a tide of boundless memories.
Oh how is the book?
the book is a very honest portrayal of her. Some fans might say not flattering, but I don’t think she cares.
I’ll have to check it out. I am a huge fan of her music, but also think there’s a lot of craziness – maybe goes with the territory – that I also find fascinating. Thanks!
Oh how is the book?
Smelling fine in VCA Bois d’Iris today.
Robin, I think you said you don’t wear this one too often and might vote it off the island…unless I mixed up comments. Why don’t you reach for this one do you think? Let me know if you’d like to rehome your bottle and I will make you a semi-princely offer… ???? But really let me know.
I’m wondering too – is it too weak? Some of the VCAs are too quiet and lack oomph on me.
This one has quite a bit of oomph imho and lasts a long while too.
I really don’t know why — I think maybe it’s a tad sweeter than I like? But also, just so many iris fragrances I like better. Do send me an email and let’s talk about it!
It is on the sweeter side.
I know you’ve done posts on iris perfumes before but independent of season, etc. what would you say are your absolute top 3 iris fragrances please?
Will email shortly…
Ack, too late at night to pick 3, I am tired! I will try to remember to come back tomorrow and answer. Or remind me…
I got a decant of that in the splitmeet and am in love. You smell amazing.
Random decant grab resulted in me wearing Phaedon Tabac Rouge.
Music for this one is Tom Waits – Little Drop of Poison.
One drop of nicotine can kill a horse, eh?

You could say so. Tabac Rouge is a nuclear scent.
hi sweetie
SOTD is Mohur. No song.
No song needed!
SOTD Dior Gris Montaigne just cuz it’s easy and pretty. Too lazy this morning to think of a song pairing.
It is a very pretty scent. I don’t find it very easy to wear, though, I feel underdressed when I wear it.
Really? I think of it as mature but not fancy- I mentally have it in the same category as BV. Though I’ll wear anything with anything so there’s that..
Yeah, I need to spend more time with it. I find it just beautiful, though, I’d like to wear it more.
You smell great, love GM.
Thanks! And someone complimented me on it today ????
It’s buried under a couple of layers and a tutleneck and I couldn’t really smell myself so was surprised anyone noticed.
Wow, perfume compliments are like unicorns.
Gris is so effortlessly pretty. Your repose to lillyjo made me think of my hay days back in the eighties. Regan was president and I wore rhinestone costume jewelry to work. Not a tiara, of course, but I did have one for formal occasions. Shoulder pads, big hair and BIG PERFUME! We dressed up to walk to the mailbox. ????????
What I meant to say was after that, nothing seemed over the top. I’d wear my strand of pearls with jeans and no worries about wearing a pc scent. This was the late 80s, for me.
No song pairing today, but wearing Volutes edt on a cold morning and it’s good.
You smell great!
Oh thank you, I need to wear that this week.
SSS Lieu de Rêves today. What else to pair it with except California Dreamin’….
Lovely. that is one of my favorite’s from Laurie.
Great pairing!
Wearing the last drops of my decant of ElDO’s Like This. I need a strange but beautiful, atmospheric soundtrack in the background, to go along with my perception of Tilda Swinton.
Got it!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gH7dMBcg-gE
That’s perfect. I never consciously realized how similar a look Tilda and David shared.
Thanks Robin!
Forgot all about that latter day Bowie song/video.
He is one of my favorite artists.
⭐
????
SotD = Bvlgari Black
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
I rarely wear Black because it dampens my sense of smell for the rest of the day. I like it a lot though, at least partially because my son uses hair products that smell similar.
My son is caregiver to a parrot, so the hyacinth macaw up top made me smile. Our family has loving, wonderful, memorable, and happy experiences with birds — though it is worth mentioning that parrots are a lifelong commitment. Also they are naturally loud/messy/destructive, and any bird with a beak will bite, sometimes quite badly.
But back to the music & fragrance notes — I see Bvlgari Black’s round bottle and it’s smooth scent as centered, complete, calming. Likewise there is a gentle precision and polish in Blackbird that is soothing. And I like the idea that McCartney’s lyrics hint at each person’s potential to find transcendence.
Fab song. Depending on my mood I can get a bit weepy when I here this song and In my Life.
I get teary at both of those songs sometimes too.
You smell great. And so true on parrots. I have one that I semi-rescued (someone was selling it on Craigslist and when I went to see her the conditions were horrible). She is a handful and is loud and messy BUT we love her so….
Your Eclectus is beautiful. She is lucky to have you.
The parrot at our house lost his favorite person and was in a sad situation. He was supposed to be a temporary foster bird here but he bonded immediately with my son. We’re glad he found his way to us.
Chugging my way through the sample stash without a song…Phlur Hanami paired with Olmstead & Vaux on another chilly morning…I am not used to this!
a lillyjo inspired pairing-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcQ-tNFQleI
Hope tomorrow finds better things for us all
Yay????
Hey Robin , I’ll join you with Graham Parker: Watch the Moon Come Down paired with All Good Things. Yesterday we had snow on the hills, today my son’s school year is finished for summer ( until February though he still has exams). I would have been listening to Graham Parker when I was his age and I can still sing many of the songs. I think I read in some science article (as in a science article that might be in Vogue ) that the songs we heard as teenagers are the ones that stick in our memories…true in my case.
A friend of mine says that the reason we have trouble remembering things as we get older is that we filled our brains with song lyrics when we were younger
que sera sera!
Nice picks!
And Pixel, yes, that must be it.
Nuit de tuberose, mango, ylang ylang, benzoin, styrax, pepper, orange blossom and sandlewood.. weird and pretty like Ezra Furman, a bit of a bad tuberose, so I’m pairing it with his fantastic new single, “I love you so bad”, which I’ve just been dancing around the kitchen to with my four year old.
I am going to come back tomorrow and listen to the rest of these songs I don’t know..have not even heard of Ezra Furman.
For another grey day, SOTD is a dab of L’Heure Bleue parfum to go with the song that was in my head last night and remains there – « I Remember it Well » from the musical Gigi.
Great combo! I love that movie!!
????
SJP Lovely, to the tune of the Cardigans 90’s hit “Lovefool”
????
SOTD is Amouage Library Collection Opus VIII, which is pretty marvellous stuff. The combination of the white florals with ginger (a very spicy note here) is just beautiful and intoxicating. It develops a lot as you wear it and so I’m waiting for the softer benzoin note to come into its own. I guess I might just connect this one up with the song “I feel pretty!”
I’m wearing SL Cedre today. I didn’t really have a song to go with it. I mean, I sort of do, but the more I think about it the more I’m second-guessing it. Whatever.
FWIW I have Spotify on right now and I’m listening to Hrafntinna by Sigur Ros. This song is gorgeous. Here is a really cool video of the band performing the song in some sort of cavern or something beneath Paris:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AuJdkZkgCw
Love Cedre. One of my favorite SL’s.
It’s good stuff. I had been neglecting it so I decided it needed some attention.
Sigur Ros! Thanks for sharing the video – don’t think I’ve heard that one before.
I’m glad you liked it! It’s one of my favorite songs of theirs.
Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes yesterday! I had a nice day
Gray and chilly here today. Re-trying No 5 Eau Premiere, and really liking it today. Maybe it works better for me in cool weather??
I think you smell great in Eau Premiere!
I’m wearing Mazzolari Lui today and so is Lola–lo lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola
Thanks to The Kinks!
Sunny morning, orange dress, so I need an orange perfume – Alien Eau Luminescente from around 2008. Mandarin, in an orange bottle.
Kenzo’s Jungle L’Elephant. I’m smelling spicy and good. Being literal and pairing it with Guns N’ Roses Welcome to the Jungle. I think it fits thought, beause they’re both powerhouses from my earlier years.
I love that macaw, made me smile. I have an Eclectus parrot and she is a handful, but she’s my baby girl nonetheless!
I was hoping to see this pairing. Good one!
Wearing Bruma today for travel day appropriateness. Far too mature for most of my musical choices. Perhaps something suave and lovely from Dinah Washington.
Love DW
My Box of Eels has already shrunk down to the skin, so that I have to snurfle my wrist to smell anything.
What’s there is so very good, though.
I am thrilled to report that our school bond referendum passed, at a ratio of 2 to 1! It’ll be 2020 before the new middle school (grades 6-8) will open (and all my kids will have graduated high school by then), but what a forward-looking win for this county!
Yay
Chant d’Arômes Guerlain, thinking of Spiegel im Spiegel bij Arvo Pärt.
not bij, by of course.
I was playing that yesterday while I worked, wondering what scent would match. I hope you do a Winterreise pairing too.
Oh, I love Winterreise, I have at least 6 versions.
Wearing Arbole Arbole and pairing it with Mazzy Star’s version of Wild Horses. It was just the first song to get stuck in my head after picking out my perfume. ????
Woke up with a headache, which in sure is mostly due to neck and shoulder stiffness I’ve had for a couple days. I need a new mattress but have very little drive to shop for one.
Added comments…
A small enabler pin to Jiji for the Hinoki shower gel comment on Monday. I was in Williamsburg and had to go in to the Le Labo store. Small travel size gel purchased. (Followed by a quick stop in Muji to buy another pen…I’m obsessed with the ones that have brown ink.
Thought of Hajusuuri today and her commute adventures. Could anyone move more slowly than a hipster exiting the subway? You can’t wait to stare at your phone until the top of the stairs???
Ooh I didn’t realize the Le Labo stores carry travel sizes of the shower gels. What are they charging for those?
Nevermind, just found on their website that they’re $10.
I don’t recall the travel sized prices but I got a 4 piece trial size for I think $12? You get to choose which products you want with that one.
Tell me about it. I hate the L train. I only recently discovered that Le Labo/coffee bar. It’s a cozy shop.
Ha! On the commuting woes. It could have been worse — she could have been driving!
Not she. Two young men, who were moving slower than my 90 year old dad… and, yes, driving would be far worse!
Is it weird to crave a fig perfume when it’s chilly? Philosykos today. I don’t have a song – I need my husband who is a music encyclopedia to help me come up with something. My headspace is full of preschool music on a daily basis!
Hey, it’s music, it works!
Crazy busy at the moment, so here are my first three SOTDs for this week.
Monday:
“I saw him dancin’ there by the record machine
I knew he must a been about seventeen
The beat was goin’ strong
Playin’ my favorite song
An’ I could tell it wouldn’t be long”
Parfums de Marly “Hamdani” – the leather thug. I loved this song when 17 was an age to aspire to (the lyrics would be very creepy if I sang them now!).
Tuesday:
“In the jungle,
the mighty jungle,
the lion sleeps tonight”
Parfumerie Générale Collection Croisière “Jangala” – a floral fresh coconutty thing that wold be better if it lasted longer. I detest the song but it started playing in my head as soon as I saw the sample label.
Wednesday:
“I’m a fool to want you,
I’m a fool to want you,
to want a love that can’t be true;
a love that’s there for others too.”
Maria Candida Gentile “Lady Day” – supposedly a bitter green floral; I thought it rather mild and a little skanky. I wore the perfume for the name (Billie Holiday’s nickname) rather than because I love her music which, like the perfume, seems like something someone else would enjoy better.
It would be creepy, since no one would know what a record machine is anymore, lol
Late today! I’m testing something from the sample stash today, so no song to do along with my SOTD.
SOTD = J’Adore L’Or essence de parfum. This flanker surpasses its parent in my book. Many thanks to the NSTer who sent me this little gem… I don’t think that I would have ever tried it on my own.
That sounds nice! I have the edt, does it have better staying power?
I tried the Gardenia but it got quite sweet on me, not my cuppa tea.
Well, the original J’Adore lasts forever and a day on me, and projects like nobody’s business. It’s like a modern day Giorgio. The J’Adore L’Or is much quieter to me, but has lasted a solid 9 – 10 hours on me. I’m still getting gentle whiffs of it. I do have scent glue skin, so YMMV.
Really late to the party, my SOTD is Sikkim by Lancome, dry, spicy leather/chypre. Perfect for today’s cooler weather!
I don’t know this perfume but it sounds perfect, for sure.
lilyjo, it’s really gorgeous and elegant. Along the same feel as Magie Noire but without the dry white floral notes that MN has.
Feel free to pm me at l detrich at yahoooooo dot com with your address if you’d like a sample.
Late today, because this week has been so PACKED. Sigh. Not just with work things–my rehearsal schedules are ramping up as my shows are coming closer. Extracurriculars are harder when a commute is involved.
The flawless Iris Ukiyoe is my sotd. This will seem like an odd pairing to most, I think–it seems odd to me–but (and this is a reverse pick, where I wore IU and then thought of what song it reminds me of) its accompanying song is Brandy’s “Full Moon,” from waaaay back in my childhood, in 2002! For those of you who have forgotten it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgZz4L1UmxE It’s a pretty great song, especially when you’re a 14-year-old whose parents don’t like her listening to pop music. Or dating.
It’s late and I am too tired and lazy to think of a song for my SOTD, Five O’Clock Au Gingembre. Although, I’m sure there is a good pairing out there.
How about “It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere”?
Perfect! ????
SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP
I probably have 5-6 wears left before the bottle goes kaput and this makes me so happy. I already have BUB 1 waiting in the wings.
I needed spine strengthening today and No.19 worked it’s charm!
I have to report in for jury duty tomorrow. I wonder what fragrance to wear. I don’t think there’s a policy on not wearing perfumes mwahahahaha.
Good luck with jury duty tomorrow. The one time I did it, the experience wasn’t bad at all.
No music pairing but I’ve got Prada Infusions d’Iris EDP. It seems a bit lighter than the Absolue, but the EDP is from a small dab on bottle.
Long week so far, isn’t it Friday yet?
And LONG day, whew, my brain is dead.
