Friday scent of the day 4/14

Posted by Robin on 14 April 2017 376 Comments

45, Leonard Cohen Suzanne

Happy Playlist Friday! Our community project for today: name a favorite song, and wear a perfume that fits the song.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I had it in mind to do something for Van Morrison's joyful Did Ye Get Healed today, and then a very kind Easter Bunny sent me a decant of the lovely L'Artisan Séville à l’Aube. With the backstory and all, that might go just perfectly with something like Sweet Thing or Into The Mystic? But then as soon as I sprayed it on this morning I thought of Suzanne, by the late, great Leonard Cohen. So, Suzanne it is.* We will have do another Playlist project next year or something.

Reminder: on 4/21 we're doing Enchanted April (inspired loosely by the novel and movie of the same name) — wear your favorite Italian fragrance.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

No playlist pick for me today, but I’m continuing my floral overdose with Lys 41. Someone almost always comments (in a good way!) when I wear this, so we’ll see what happens today! Happy Friday everyone.

I was feeling nostalgic, so Indigo Girls with Closer to Fine and a good spritz of Anais Anais today. Reminds me of getting ready for high school dances with this song on and my friends and i all taking hits from the communal perfume bottle on my friend’said dresser.

Omg, I had so many good ideas for today. Is it sad that I’ve been thinking about this project for weeks?
Ultimately it came down to the fact that I had to go with my favorite band of all time: The Smiths. ‘Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’ for the beautiful but discontinued Lea by Calypso St.Barth. The perfume that I searched high and low for, for over a year and finally found!

But for anyone else who does not know your song:

Pairing this with Tibetan Mountain Temple….

my yoga teacher (whom I have known for almost 10 years) always plays the most inspiring and uplifting music in class…love the melody and harmony to this one but most especially the lyrics. Picked TMT as I wear it often to class and I also gifted a bottle to my yoga teacher after numerous compliments from her.

Last night while my partner was snoring in bed I spent two hours watching youtube clips of the Moody Blues. This has been, by far, my most favorite community project and I hope we will do it again somewhere down the line….not only did it resurrect my interest in exploring much beloved bands from my past but it introduced me to new genres and new artists….because of all you wonderful NSTers with great taste in music I have new roads to explore :) Many many thanks to all of you….

Happy Friday all……make your place your home :)

peace, love, light….(as my yoga teacher always says!)

The Moody Blues! I have vague memories of my parents listening to Every Good Boy Deserves Favour on vinyl way back in the day when I was a wee one.

Tam Dao with a little spritz of Escentric 01 (for the peppery lime open) to go with Don Henley’s Boys of Summer- one of my all time favorite songs. Tam Dao reminds me of warm summer days and sunshine and camping.

    Nobody on the road,
    Nobody on the beach.
I feel it in the air,
    The summer’s out of reach.
    Empty lake, empty streets,
    The sun goes down alone.
    I’m driving by your house
    Don’t know you’re not home.
    But I can see you,
Your brown skin shining in the sun.
You got your hair combed back
    And your sunglasses on, baby.
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone.

It makes me laugh to think of my kitty named Don Henley when I was in college- my roommate and I were constantly saying things like, “No, Don Henley, get off the counter!” We always called him by his full name lol.

Being very literal today, plus need to use my evaporating little bottle: 1000 Flowers Narcotic Flowers + I Wanna Be Sedated (actually serve as more of a wake-up tonic, thank goodness).

Were I able to wear any Duchaufour creations, would go with Swamp (Talking Heads).

The other day hajusuuri said she couldn’t think of pairings, and I’ve a suggestion for our intrepid commuter: Living in the City, by wait for it…Hurray for the Riff Raff (great song, btw). She’ll have to come up with a cityish scent she likes to go along with it.

For all the spice freaks, suggest you peruse the oeuvres of Ha Ha Tonka!

For today I wanted a fragrance to go with Kanye West’s All of the Lights. It must be sparkly (for the title) but also have richness and complexity for the horns and the Minaj and the Rihanna. So I went with Magie Noire. It is definitely my favorite combination of the week and I listened to the whole album on the way to work today and found that actually Magie Noire pairs pretty well with every song on there, especially when the sky fills with herons. Looking forward to reading everyone else’s choices!

Oh, Beige it is. Any excuse to wear Beige is a good one. However, I did get a little distracted during my YouTube wanderings, and found Gordon Lightfoot singing Pussywillows Cattails. “Pussywillows, cattails, soft winds and roses… warm breath of spring.” If ever there were a song made for fragrance, it’s that one.

Pussywillows, cat-tails, soft winds and roses
Rainbows in the woodland, water to my knees
Shivering, quivering, the warm breath of spring
Pussywillows, cat-tails, soft winds and roses

          Catbirds and cornfields, daydreams together
Riding on the roadside the dust gets in your eyes
Reveling, disheveling, the summer nights can bring
Pussywillows, cat-tails, soft winds and roses

Slanted rays and colored days, stark blue horizons
Naked limbs and wheat bins, hazy afternoons
Voicing, rejoicing, the wine cups do bring
Pussywillows, cat-tails, soft winds and roses

Harsh nights and candlelights, woodfires a-blazin’
Soft lips and fingertips resting in my soul
Treasuring, remembering, the promise of spring
Pussywillows, cat-tails, soft winds and roses

Hmmm … it mentions tea, bees, and honey. Thinking about my collection, Jacomo 08 has tea and honey; Golden Cattleya (by Olympic Orchids) features honey and pollen; and Fox by Sweet Anthem has beeswax and black tea.

I don’t own Tea for Two by L`Artisan Parfumeur, but per Fragrantica, it features tea and honey.

“The Big Rock Candy Mountain”. No explicit honey, but “the buzzing of the bees in the cigarette trees”, and bees imply honey. It would go with anything with a tobacco note too.

This is such a great theme and I have enjoyed reading everyone’s creative choices this week. On this dreary, rainy Friday I’m wearing Gris Clair, which doesn’t trigger a specific song but is very much like listening to Pink Floyd all day. I’m starting with Dark Side of the Moon.

Someone was talking about Cabochard and clubs yesterday. I spent way too many weekends in the mid-late 70s in a club in Provincetown, The Back Room, wearing Cabochard and platform shoes. The song that stays with me from that time is Bowie’s Young Americans. When I hear it, it takes me back and makes me happy, every time. Provincetown is a very different place now, on the other hand, which makes me sad. Other songs on the Back Room playlist: Shirley & Company’s Shame Shame Shame; BeeGees Stayin’ Alive; Donna Summer Love to love You Baby.

I’m in Vetiver Tonka again which I paired with this:

Mark Lanegan, one of my favorite contemporary singer/song writers who does a starkly beautiful cover of Chelsea Wolfe’s Flatlands. This fits me right now and I’m already thinking of ways I can pare down stuff I’m hauling in the van.

If I had a sample or bottle of Eau de lierre (Diptyque), I’d wear it in honour of Under the Ivy, that beautiful piano ballad by Kate Bush.
But I do not have that scent.

I was too tired this morning to think of another fav song and then a perfume to go with it.

But I’m wearing Ormonde Woman, and it reminds me of bands like My Brightest Diamond and Goldfrapp. Bands with beautiful frontwomen, who have voices that are both angelic/dreamlike and powerful.

My husband is always annoyed that I like Guns N Roses. The summer that ‘Sweet Child of Mine’ was so big, the juvenile delinquents who lived next door would blast it on their car stereo every morning when they drove off to school (or wherever. not likely that it was actually school most days.) I know they did it to annoy the neighborhood, but I loved it. It would have really ruined their day to know I was enjoying it.

It sounds like my weekend project will be to catch up on the week of posts- I’ve completely missed checking in and I’m looking forward to learning some new music and being reminded of really good songs.

I’m wearing FM Carnal Flower. It’s so beautiful, romantic, and what a tuberose perfume should be. I dredged up Roberta Flack’s The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
    https://youtu.be/r9jmusgMgro
You don’t hear it much, but it’s simple and timeless.

Woke up with an ear-worm: Love is Alive (Gary Wright, 1975).

Sprayed on Ineke’s Angel’s Trumpet this morning, as it was the first vaguely lilyish thing that came to hand.

Perfume came naturally from Paris (naturally)

I am taking a “day off” today to catch up on grading. I would guess I have about 6 hours of work to do, and it wasn’t getting done at work. Ah well, at least I can do it in my jammies, and the only interuptions are my own wiggly desire to get up and do something else fun, like laundry.

I have sprayed myself with Ninfeo Mio to help me feel like it’s sunny and warm, even if it is illusory on this blustery spring day (although a little sunshine peeks through the popcorn clouds from time to time).

Agreed! It will be a relief to have my grades updated. I am required to give (and grade in a very specific way) these big lab reports each year. It is always a huge undertaking to get them all done. And if I do it today, kids will have enough time to make corrections before midterms, which would be nice.

Ninfeo Mio makes me happy. It is such a cheery, easy scent!

    SOTD: By Kilian Single Malt

    Song Pairing: Smooth Operator
    Album: Diamond Life 1984
    Artist: Sade (band)

From Wikipedia: “Smooth Operator” is about a fashionable, devious man who lives a jet-set lifestyle. He is popular with women and breaks many hearts. The lyrics “Coast to Coast/LA to Chicago/Western Male/Across the North and South to Key Largo/Love for sale” imply that he uses women to obtain his income.

Just like the title, Single Malt is one smooth boozy perfume, one of the best By Kilian, IMHO. It is the London exclusive but all the exclusives somehow find their way to the boutiques elsewhere. Ah, and Sade is a U.K. band so it matches in “origin” as well!

How did I do? Did I pass? ;-)

I seem to be stuck in a Le Temps d’une Fete rut (not that I’m complaining) and can only find songs that resonate with that scent rather than the other way round:

My favorite Beatles song, “Here Comes the Sun.”
    Crowded House, “Weather With You.”

A fortnight ago I managed to contact Nicolai Parfums about Le Temps d’une Fete (I fell for it badly when finding and wearing a long lost sample) with help of a kind perfumista. ‘There is some juice left in the factory’ the helpful SA mailed me. There was also some left in a sho, I bought the lot and I received confirmation of shipment today. “I am walking on sunshine” I suppose, although I love “Here Comes the Sun” much better. And as Van steals the show today I add in “Brand New Day”:

When all the dark clouds roll away
And the sun begins to shine
I see my freedom from across the way
And it comes right in on time
Well it shines so bright and it gives so much light
And it comes from the sky above
Make me feel so free make me feel like me
And it lights my life with love

And it seems like (seems like) and it feels like (feels like)
And it seems like (seems like), yes it feels like (feels like)
      A brand new day
A brand new day, yeah, yeah

Soon joining you in the rut!

    Good Friday!

    1) Song of the day: Blue Sky Action – Above and Beyond featuring Alex Vargas. Electronica song, but it’s really wonderful:
    I get tired of life,
What a world I’m living in,
    Now I’ve got it all,
I’ve had enough, I’m giving in
    The sun is shining
    Melting the clouds away
Got me some Blue Sky Action!
    I’m breathing today
    I know I’m burning
    This is my final day
I’m gonna to go out smiling
    A king for a day!

    2) SOTD to go along: Black Jade by Lubin. Fresh, sheer incense/rose, incredibly pretty and grounded for a chilly sunny spring day!

    3) And yes, meetings on Good Friday. Ugh, why?

    OMG
This thread makes me feel old…
But in a good way. When I think of growing up in NY and spending every weekend at the Fillmore East and concerts at Madison Square Garden
And actually making it to Woodstock where the crowd was a half a million strong…
visiting electric lady land studios with a guitar playing boyfriend. All of this is the soundtrack to my life.
At my moms funeral last month we requested Beatles music be played.
So I will wrap it all up and spray on Christopher Street where my sister and I spent so many hours.

though I collect and love both, my brain doesn’t process the intersection of music and perfume very well.
Perhaps because songs are even more fleeting than scent?

What I learned from this challenge is that my taste in music is a lot darker/janglier/less digestible than my taste in perfume, so it was hard to make things line up!

Doing another test run of April Aromatics’ Calling All Angels, just so I can have an excuse to listen again to the song of the same name. Written by Jane Siberry, and performed in a duet with k.d. lang.

I was introduced to it on the soundtrack of Wim Wenders’ film Until the End of the World. Great soundtrack and movie! It still amazes me how prescient Wenders was in showing a vision of how our society would come to be. A lot of it already has. (From 1991)

Lush Rose Jam and vintage YSL Champagne to go with one of the greatest sambas of all time: As rosas não falam, by Cartola. For those of you who speak Spanish, you’ll get the Portuguese:

    “Volto ao jardim
Com a certeza que devo chorar
Pois bem sei que não queres voltar
    Para mim
    Queixo-me às rosas
    Que bobagem
    As rosas não falam
    Simplesmete as rosas exalam
O perfume que roubam de ti…”

My sense of smell is still impaired, so I postponed my planned perfume. Instead:

    – Started the day in a few drops of Dior “Oud Ispahan”, and thereby proved to myself that wearing a decent sample would be a waste of time;
    – switched to Waters+Wild “Cedarwood +Cognac” during the first part of the day. Tried out a new vegan restaurant with TOMK and bought a pair of plum-coloured jeans. :^)
    – now home again and in Annick Goutal “Encens Flamboyant” – my mini bottle is almost drained.

Probably my favourite song of all time is Joy Division “Decades”. Never in a million years will there be a perfume to equal it.

Such a fun project this week! I’ll have to go back and listen to all the songs I don’t know after work.
I’m wearing CdG Ourzazate and the only Arabian theme I could think of was Frank Zappa’s Sheik Yetbouti Tango-and picturing his image on the album cover made me laugh.

    https://youtu.be/a2_K-kKSCr4

I popped into the FM Superstitious launch event at FM in the village featuring FM, himself, last night. I think I like Superstitious more after a second testing than I did the first time around-thpugh not enough to want it. Didn’t strike me as that animalic this time-more bitter/soapy, and lasted through this am’s shower! Mr Malle seems nice enough but he was swarmed with people so didn’t chat.

I don’t really associate specific perfumes and songs, but I do associate both scents and songs with times/places. One instance where the two happen to overlap is from my time living in the UK: the just-released perfume I bought at first sniff and the songs on heavy rotation on Radio 1 at the time. So, for Playlist Friday, my SOTD is Stella McCartney Stella, and I’m pairing it with a whole playlist.

Imma help you get your weekend started, people! Let’s go!

    Hole in the Head -Sugababes
Take Me Out – Franz Ferdinand
Let Your Head Go – Victoria Beckham
    Hey Ya! – Outkast
    Twist – Goldfrapp
    Hysteria – Muse
    Milkshake- Kelis
    Slow – Kylie Minogue
Are You Gonna Be My Girl – Jet
Sweet Dreams My LA Ex – Rachel Stevens
I Believe in a Thing Called Love – The Darkness
    Superstar – Jamelia
It’s My Life – No Doubt
    Laura – Scissor Sisters
Seven Nation Army – The White Stripes

Then I decided that it would be a more interesting challenge to go with the tune for the Irish set dance I’m working on, “The Job of Journeywork”, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9LgbFfJT5I I picked Y because I’d wear it to a temp office job.

Ahh the song and perfume pairing is so fun and challenging! I made myself late for work this morning being indecisive about it. I had lots of ideas, but I landed on Aedes Copal Azur paired with Madonna’s Like a Prayer. Madonna up through the mid 90s is a huge guilty pleasure for me. Like a Prayer is one of my favorite songs to song along to, which is quite strange because I’m not religious or spiritual in the least.

    https://g.co/kgs/DYQwWR

    Backup ideas were:
D.S. & Durga Debaser (yes, I’m Captain Obvious)
Ostara for Al Green-Love and Happiness
D.S. & Durga Sir for gender bending to pair with the entire Ziggy Stardust album
Maison Anonyme Pale Fire for Japandroids-The House that Heaven Built because I wore that perfume to their concert last month

Somehow song pairing and perfume are themes I can actually do. Perfumes can evoke a time, a mood, a place, a person…there are just so many options. If I had any Poison I’d pair it with Matchbox Twenty “Unwell” but this morning I woke up with a desire for a light, pretty floral. SOTD is California Reverie and the song is the Oh-So-Literal California Dreaming, the Mama & Papa’s version, now an earworm I’ll probably have the rest of the day.

I like this theme. When I was trying to make my own stuff, I often got ideas from music. I still have a couple of those ideas knocking around in my head but haven’t gotten around to trying them. I still have all my stuff, so I should try to get back to it.

So anyway, I’m feeling kinda metal today, so I’m wearing Bulgari Black. I’m off work today for Good Friday, so I’m probably going to be smelling awesome while giving my house the cleaning that it so desperately needs and that I’ve been putting off.

I’m listening to “The Hunter” by Mastodon (the song specifically, but that’s also the title of the album), and that really seems as good a pairing as any for this perfume.

And since we’re on the subject of music-perfume pairings, I’ve long thought that Iris Silver Mist is an Opeth song in perfume form, in my mind something off the “Blackwater Park” album (maybe because I know that album the best), like maybe “Dirge for November”, but I think a few others on the album could fit.

    https://open.spotify.com/track/10g9fCnwqXnQITuj75YufB
    https://open.spotify.com/track/0KB5mXwlNtyZSzMV8nufxn

I probably would’ve done that today if I had any ISM.

Agree about music leading to ideas about fragrance – my brain parses them similarly – their emotional impact, density/transparency, darkness/lightness, and so on.

My brain links perfume, not to music, but primarily to light and shade and colour, and thence to mood, style and purpose– purpose understood, that is, as what the diary contains, not the overarching purpose of perfume, which first and last for me is to smell good on my terms. I love the fact that we all process it so differently.

I chose Naomi Goodsir Or du Serail today, and I don’t know if this is related or appropriate to the scent, but I have Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” stuck in my head this afternoon.

    SOTD Diorissimo

Don’t have a song for this, but I did have a dream where I was walking and found a tester bottle (no cap) in the bushes!

    Take a look..

You smell lovely. Is that a genuine Diorissimo ad?

I guess so. I looked up “Diorissimo ad” on Youtube and that was the first thing that came up ;)

I’m really late today, but it doesn’t seem to matter.

Today I want a perfume that’s all dark and moody, but I don’t seem to own one. Lots of gourmands of various persuasions, but nothing really noir. Hmmph. Well, then, I’ll wear Black Cashmere and pretend it’s darker than it is. I’m going to Chanel today to have my make up done by my favourite artist. She wants to organise me before she leaves to return to full-time study, and she tells me I should update my look for winter. I’m a little surprised to learn that I have a “look”, but there you go. I’d like (you guessed it) a darker, moodier, cooler eye shadow, so that should be fun. And with any luck, I might come home with another sample of La Pausa, enough to tide me over until I buy a FB for my birthday next month.

SOTD = Dior’s Dune EdT. My bottle is aging beautifully. It comforts in its own way.

    The tune to match:

    Hush now, don’t you cry
Wipe away the teardrop from your eye
    You’re lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream
    Spinning in your head

    “Silent Lucidity” by Queeensryche.

Coco Mademoiselle EDT and Brittney Spears’ Oops, I Did It Again. A tune so similar to so many others, seemingly unremarkable and common, emanating from a vessel whose delivery makes it all look too simple, too easy. Yet, the song is so expertly produced and crafted, it gets inside your brain and doesn’t leave. That’s Coco Mademoiselle EDT to me and I love every second of the tune it plays on my skin.

So much fun reading everyones songs. Linking songs to perfume isn’t something that’s occured to me, so I hope this will broaden my horizons going forward.
So today Im wearing Arbole Arbole, just because, and i keep getting Gustav Holst’s Mercury in my head for it, even though I would not have chosen to pair those consciously.
    Happy Easter, everyone!

I waited all week to pair No. 19 with my fave Allman Brothers song. Then last night it hit me that with the word “cross” in the title it would be in poor taste on Good Friday. Luckily I had four whole days to save myself from sticking my foot in my mouth once more. Sigh.

Anyway, ended up wearing both Hove Vetivert and Carnation. Straddling spring and summer, I guess. Happy Easter, all.

Very, very late to report, though I did do the pairing this morning but never got around to writing about it: Parfums d’Empire Azemour with Elvis Costello, “Tart,” which is about oranges in the streets of Seville. Used up the end of that sample…probable need to think about getting more in some format.

I did seriously think about pairing Sel et Vetiver with Morrissey, “Everyday is Like Sunday,” though — as someone suggested before I got up. But…too many memories. Too many, not so good memories (the song, not the Sel et Vetiver, which I love). There was a very long summer in university spent working in a foreign country in the “coastal town they forgot to bomb.”
