Tuesday scent of the day 11/7

Posted by Robin on 7 November 2017 213 Comments

piano tea pot

Happy Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day! Also happy Tuesday, and if you're in the US, happy off-year Election Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

It's going to be cold here today and I'm sure I'll change my fragrance before the day is through, but at the moment I'm wearing Balenciaga Paris L'Eau Rose for Sarah McLachlan covering the Tom Waits song Ol '55, from The Freedom Sessions, 1994. (I like the Tom Waits version better, though. Some of you may remember The Eagles did a version back in the 70s.) Tea at the moment is cold-brew coffee.

Reminder: 11/10 will Playlist Friday...name a favorite song, and wear a perfume that fits the song. (Yes, I loved this project so much, we're doing it again. If you want to see the first one, it's here.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Piano Teapot is £79.99 at Owl Barn Gifts: "This is the teapot that’s always in tune with the tastes of music lovers. The highly detailed, carefully hand-painted collectable with golden highlights is a huge favourite amongst customers and the old-style telephone, wedding photo frame and music book on the lid add homely finishing touches. Like all our hand made teapots, it is of course fully functional (for pouring tea, that is - not for playing!)."

The Piano Teapot is adorable. A lemming for sure!

Wearing Cafe Tuberosa from a sample. I loved the wonderful coffee blast opening, but the drydown even though is really nice, it is quite masculine for my taste. I might be wrong since this is the first time I am trying it. I will wear it a couple of more times to see if it works for me, or I finally stop thinking about getting the 10ml size from Sephora. I am grateful this was not a full bottle blind buy as I was planning to a couple of weeks ago.

I found the drydown to be really odd on me, so I took it off my list – loved the opening, though!

The drydown is great on me, not specifically tuberose to my nose but nice floral blend. Just bought a FB.

I am absolutely thrilled to go vote YES today on a local bond referendum for a new middle school. Time we moved this county into the 21st century!

Bookworm starts her new job today.

My vintage (1999) Hermes 24, Faubourg edt ebay purchase (prompted by recent posts on Kafkaesque, which is unusual because she’s usually reviewing some spendy esoteric weird super-indie niche frags) showed up yesterday, and I’m wearing it. It’s lovely, and miles away from the thin lab-created bouquet of the current version. Reminds me to some degree — in spirit if not actual smell — of my old beloved Karl Lagerfeld Chloe, which I can no longer wear because a) it’s been ruined :( and b) it now has too much emotional association with Disaster Drama from my teens/early 20s. This was a win.

Thank you for voting to invest in your local public school. Our community passed a huge bond issue to renovate the high school and 2 middle schools a few years ago. The renovated high school was opened this fall and my daughter is a student there. It is gorgeous! But more important is the message of support and commitment to education that it communicates.

Absolutely!! Education is vital, and never more so than when you live in a community already disadvantaged by comparison with its surrounding localities. People have been pulling their children out of our dilapidated middle schools and paying tuition to send them to schools in the surrounding counties. The high school has been renovated and technologically up to date, and the course offerings are comparable to other schools’ in the region. The elementary schools are new or recently renovated. But the middle schools should have been replaced 20 years ago, and weren’t, due to a cost-saving, “Those schools were good enough for me 60 years ago” mentality. It is past time for a solution.

I’m so proud to hear that your newly renovated schools are successful!

Nice! I remember taking home a sample from Sephora may years ago now and it leaked. Theolder formula was potent and opulent. I get ejat you mean by the current being thin by comparison. Enjoy your find!

I’m in vintage Balenciaga Le Dix, so house cousins with you, Robin. I’m at a loss for a play list selection though. I thought of Bolero, for its association with that dreadful-yet-funny movie “10”, or Rock Around the Clock because “Dix” makes me think of a roman-numeral 10, but neither of those songs evokes the grace and elegance of Le Dix. Did Beethoven do a Tenth Symphony? (Clearly NOT a music nerd here.)

Beethoven’s 10th symphony was unfinished. There must be a fragrance that feels unfinished, or that was completed after the original perfumer passed away.

I’m wearing a sample of Ambre Russe, Parfum d’empire and relieved that I don’t need to add it to my Full Bottle list, which is relatively short, but still much longer than my means! My favourite ambers are still Ambre Des Merveilles, which I own, and Ambre Sultan, which I really hope to get my mits on soon.

Commando at the moment. Wondering how I’m going to deal with the cats’ penchant for open windows in my home office and the cooler weather. We are all heading toward older age, and becoming more clear about what we want, and stuff we won’t tolerate. That’s a good thing, mostly, except when it comes to open windows in winter. The furballs tend to win out in most battles, since they have innately greater clarity, focus, and perseverance.

I’m in Cuir Cannage for the first time. It is supposed to smell like the inside of a leather handbag. I liked the initial blast, but I’ll have to see about the drydown. My favorite scent intended to smell like the inside of a leather handbag was a special edition from Smell Bent, called Fashiony. It has been discontinued for a couple of years.

    CdG Avignon

Not quite dark enough for Dead Can Dance’s De Profundis (out of the depths of sorrow) with otherwordly vocals by cheerful Aussie Lisa Gerrard, but satisflyingly moody.

Wearing the remainder of BK Amber Oud today – woke up with the loveliest fragrance wafting very softly from my arm – spicy cedary vanilla. And, given the price (wow!), I’m going to match it with another Tom Waits favorite of mine, I Hope That I Don’t Fall in Love with You.

    SotD = Infusion d’Iris edt

Let’s start at the very beginning,
A very good place to start.
When you read you begin with A, B, C.
When you sing you begin with Do, Re, Mi.

I’ll pair this one with Maria singing Do Re Mi in the Sound of Music. Happiness, pure and simple.

Wearing Jacques Zolty Van-ile. I’ll pair it with The Beatles “My Sweet Love”. It’s pretty and innocently romantic-not a cloying vanilla.

I have to empty my perfume cabinet because of floor work and painting. I was only going to leave out a few things, but I’m having trouble deciding on what I’ll need through the spring. I’m also digging out perfumes I haven’t worn enough. It’s been much easier to decide on the fate of almost everything else- even family heirlooms.

To me it’s lacking a bit of energy…if it was a person she would be slumped on a velvet daybed,, staring into space, a glass of flat champagne in hand…but I like the faint soapiness.

Have you read The Family Romanov by Candace Fleming? It is written for young adults, so it’s very accessible. Not super in-depth but a solid overview. Does a nice job telling the story from multiple sides. It focuses more heavily on the Romanov family, obviously. Lots of great photos. I really liked it.

For some reason when I thought about it, I thought it would go with something instrumental like Red Sparowes or Explosions in the Sky, but a particular Red Sparowes song kept sticking in my head. I had to look up the title because their titles are crazy long and I can never remember them, but the song is called “Alone and Unaware, the Landscape was Transformed In Front of Our Eyes.”

    Yay for Tom Waits!

    Scent of the Day:
Vitrum, by Sammarco, vetiver and rose

    Song t match it:
    Where the wild roses grow
by Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue

These two artists are almost opposites of each other in the pop/rock music spectrum. But I dig them both :)

I saw Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds live once, he and his band are really amazing and in my top 5 of live performances!

I would not run or pay to see Kylie live, but I really enjoy her carefree catchy pop songs once in a while! “I’m spinning around, move out of my way..”

Wearing I Miss Violet and pairing it with Blind Melon “No Rain.” I tried to think of a song that reminds me of fields or bucolic scenes for the violet, and this song popped in my head. It’s probably due to the music video with the bee-costumed girl and band hanging out and dancing around in a field.

I think it’s well-made, but I’m not sure I want to wear it. Like many of the other scents in the Dry Down sample set, it’s kind of literal for my tastes.

Hear ya. Not often I eant to smell like a popcorn ball. I like the Quartanas. They’re all very vivid and a bit psychedelic. I bought the most wearable one (Hemlock).

I want that teapot way worse than the Wicked Witch of the West!
SOTD is Ambre Sultan, perfect for gray, misty weather.

I am wearing MKK today, paired with Nina Simone singing, “I Put a Spell on You” because that’s what MKK did to me.

Freezing, and pouring rain, and I have to go out to vote and I don’t even want to leave the house. Grump.

I’m wearing Heure Exquise which is mixed with some Panthère and some Amouage Gold that got on my scarf. It’s not a bad combo, although I can’t think of a song that would fit this blend.

Well, in addition to voting today, I have also indulged in some bittersweet chocolate with almonds, thanks to some leftover Halloween candy. So far, so good.

SOTD = 28 La Pausa EdT, from a decant a lovely NSTer sent me. It’s about half gone now.

Song of the day = “November Rain” by Guns N Roses. The lyric “Nothing lasts forever, not even cold November rain” can also apply to 28 La Pausa.

Love the cooler temps. Love the piano teapot!

    SOTD = Carner Barcelona D600

The combo of iris, nutty vetiver and vanilla makes this an outstanding fragrance! Prior to about 2 years ago, I neglected D600 because of the name which reminded me of the versatile WD 40 even though dearest Lucas waxed poetic about D600 from the get go.

So, for a throwback to 70s advertising, I present:

    You’re welcome :-)

Robin, there doesn’t seem to be any link where you say we can find more on the previous Playlist project “here”–nothing to click on. I’d like to see it so I could get more of an idea of what people did for it. Thank you.
