Monday scent of the day 11/6

Posted by Robin on 6 November 2017 164 Comments

Happy Monday (yeah, I know) and happy National Saxophone Day! what fragrance are you wearing?

Last time we did a Playlist Friday, I wanted to do a fragrance for Van Morrison's Did Ye Get Healed but I didn't get to it. So that's how I'm starting this week. The fragrance happy enough to match: Parfums DelRae Wit.

Reminder: 11/10 will Playlist Friday...name a favorite song, and wear a perfume that fits the song. (Yes, I loved this project so much, we're doing it again. If you want to see the first one, it's here.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Songes and Field of Gold by Sting
But not the regular version, this version https://youtu.be/qaTIw8MGFyg

At about 2:30am I was up and super sick, feeling better after a cup of tea and some advil.

No matter how hard my head was pounding this morning I lite some Nag Champa incense for the people of Texas.

SotD is Iris Nazarena (from a sample)
Was not aware this morning it was Playlist friday this week. But if I had to choose a song…hmm something quiet, minimal, but also inviting and warm.

Oh, and the showergel Hinoki by Le Labo I bought last week, is awesome! Its like taking a shower in a Japanese mountain temple :) and you only need a very small drop.
I still have to find out if it fits CdG’s Hinoki…will try soon!

        :)
I was lemminged into buying it right here on NST (cant remember who exactly, but according to Hasjusuuri it was ElisaP).
I am glad to pass on the ‘lemmingness’ haha.
22 euros is not cheap but its also not outrageous, and its a tiny exotic getaway in a bottle :)

I talked about getting the discovery set but I didn’t love any of them that much. I actually just gave the little tube of body cream to my brother. So doubt I was the lemming creator since I wasn’t that enthusiastic. But if you like fresh, woody you’ll probably like it.

Maybe it was someone else then,
or i just read “hinoki shower…” and that was probably all that was needed to create the lemming haha. Because I really like CdG Hinoki, and other Japanese woodsy smells (incense!!!).

I’m super excited about this weeks project! I’m wearing Bottega Veneta today. Song match is Aerosmiths Back in the Saddle. I have a couple of leather scents to choose from for this song, but BV has the most rock n roll feel, to win out. Sending love to the people of Texas this morning.

On this rainy Monday, I’m wearing Halston. Picked up a vintage set recently of dry oil spray and mini parfum. Good grief, what a difference those banned and restricted ingredients make. Nitro-musks and boatloads of oakmoss… sigh. This thing is gorgeous and will carry me through the day like little else can.

I’ll play in reverse, since I had to wear Bois des Iles today because last night I had a dream about wearing Bois des Iles. I’ll pick Coming Home by Leon Bridges for its smooth beauty, and its mention of bitterness which reminds me of how there’s just the hint of bite in BdI which makes it not cloying.

SOTM is Alamut, but something about it isn’t agreeing with me. About to hop in the shower, so I think it’ll not be the choice for the rest of the day. Lately, I’ve preferred soft leathers, so may go that direction.

I’m really starting to have a yen for that Hinoki shower gel…

For some reason when I read about this Friday’s project, I began thinking about Elvis songs, but I didn’t come up with any good ideas. However, I thought it would be a fun challenge to assign perfumes to “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Jail House Rock,” and especially, “You Ain’t Nothin’ but a Hound Dog….” ha ha ha. Now I’m trying to figure out one of these to do on Friday.

        Yeah!

My boys were obsessed with the toy Tonkas when they were little. But Taz couldn’t say “tr” until he was about five, and his pronunciation of “truck” got, well, interesting. I was always having to apologize to people over it.

it is very developmentally appropriate and common for the little ones to replace a “tr” with an “f”…double consonant blends are much trickier to pronounce :)

I’m wearing and comparing some Cierge de Lune and When We Cuddle. I like them both.

The latter is available for only a month via luckyscent I think so I have to decide if I need a full bottle or not.

The limited run and being available for only a month marketing tactic somewhat annoys me.

Would it help if I bought 5 mL off of you? I know the splitmeet is over, and you might not want the hassle of splitting, but I’d very much like to try it, and am not at all interested in a FB (and I am most definitely not allowed to buy any more samples, though 5 mL decants somehow feel exempt). If this does interest you, please e-mail me at ko bhatta at jee mayl daut caum.

Andy Tauer seems so lovely that I don’t know if it really is a marketing ploy or just him thinking that putting it into full production would be more work than he wants to put in for this fragrance.

I assumed he did it as a nice thing for Luckyscent’s anniversary, and not for his own purposes? But of course I have no idea.

She-ra, I think he sells these at all of his personal in-store appearances, and I do understand wanting to have something special to offer fans. Maybe if you don’t decide in time to buy it online, you could find a mule to pick it up for you next time he does an appearance?

Oh, of course your explanation makes more sense. I was just thinking about how he explained (in his blog) that the 5 mL LADDM bottles were a lot of work for not that much payoff, and wondered if perhaps the When We Cuddle line was the same.

I’m testing When We Cuddle… today, too! If I’d smelled it blind, I would never have guessed Andy Tauer as the perfumer. It’s so soft ambery vanillic musk (and I get cardamom, but not listed in the notes), without Tauerade. It also wears close to the body. Is Aedes’ Cierge de Lune similar? Let us know what you experience.

They both are lovely and prominently feature vanilla and spice. The CdL is sweeter and has some flowers making it more feminine. WWC is spicier, has patchouli and wears a bit more masculine. Both have great longevity.

How did you find it please? Agreed that it is softer and has none of the Tauerade. My nose can’t get enough vanilla lately for some reason. I don’t know if it is the time of year with cooler weather or Robin’s write-up on vanilla perfumes. :)

I enjoyed it but When we cuddle…seems to fade quickly, even poured generously from the vial.. It lasted maybe 3-4 hours. Most vanilla scents are tenacious and last all day for me. I tried CdL this summer in NYC and agree it is more floral. I think it lasts longer, but would have to locate my sample and retest. YMMV!????

Wearing Papillon Dryad from the recent splitmeet. I really really like this. The drydown reminds me a little of the Art candle by Bella Freud, which also has what I’d like to call dusty eraser notes :-)

Do you ever have the experience where a sweater smells like perfume and so you want to wear the same thing, but can’t remember exactly what it is? This leads me to endless sniffing of bottles until I get the right one, but sometimes if the dry down is different, even that can be tricky. My scent memory for some perfumes is really good, for others . . . terrible.

A perk of a small collection, I guess, is that I pretty much only have two perfumes that cling to clothes (in a way I notice), so I don’t have to guess. But I can imagine the treasure hunt you get sent on might be quite frustrating!

Dear Texas.. it’s been a tough few months for you. My heart goes out to the lost lives who were simply attending a Sunday service. :(

Gourmand Coquin for me today. Dreary weather calls for cozy fragrance. Connecting this with a song is too much brainpower for a Monday. It’s sweet, boozy and yet elegant.. maybe a Robert Palmer song: Addicted to Love

Still in Opium since I heard it is dangerous to quit cold turkey.

From the same era is Tantra’s 16 minute+ Hills of Katmandu (1979), a heady Hi-NRG Disco track that must have heated up late nights at Studio 54 back in the days.

    https://youtu.be/erBfSrecnrM

It has aged well just like Opium and sounds futuristic to this day.

Ok, I haven’t managed to participate in this CP before because it’s a little too creative for me, but…here we go. Today, I am wearing Cafe Tuberosa, to go with Bach’s Coffee Cantata. Yes, Bach wrote a coffee cantata. It’s worth it to find a recording of the English version (I can’t seem to, in a few minutes of Googling), but listening to the original German and reading along with the subtitles should give you all a kick. I’ve never performed it, but you can bet I learned the soprano arias from it.

My belly is smaller- a shocking 2 inches smaller – a sign of fibroid tumor death. And despite the cold, I do have more energy to go about my day, which is a sign that my thyrorid is not as stressed. SOTD: Chanel Sycomore

I’m being decadent and wearinG TWO sprays of the fantastic edt. I love this stuff but can’t think of a good song to go with it.

QUESTION FOR THE GROUP — any recs for scenting an office? I recently started working from home (it’s challenging since it’s fairly isolating). I want to make it more enjoyable by scenting the space, which I can’t do at work. I’ve burnt some scented candles, including one I’ve hoarded for 13+ years from Crabtree and Evelyn. I was thinking of trying Papiers d’Armenie? What else? I know that someone recommended something recently for a desk.

    What do you guys love?

I bought a Papier d’Armenie candle ages ago, and put a lid on it. For a long time, I did not even burn it, I just took the lid off for a hour or two when I wanted to scent my office. Then when the scent faded a bit and that didn’t work anymore, I started burning it :-)

If you don’t have lets and you can find a place where the kiddies cannot get to it, I would use a reed diffuser. My brand / scent of choice is Antica Farmacista Vanilla, Bourbon, Mandarin.

Some aromatherapy scents can help clear your head. Don’t ask me which one because my head was not clear when I read about it :-)

Yet again I realize that you are my scent twin.

I adore the Antica Farmacista Reed diffusers and used the limone and cedar one religiously—- until they changed the formula or something else a year ago and they completely stopped having any throw. I threw it away, bought a replacement and then contacted the company (which I never do) when the second was equally terrible. They claimed it wasn’t reformulated but the scent doesn’t WORK any more. You can’t smell it. It’s bad enough to seem defective to my nose (and someone else in my family reached out independently and asked me, since she started using the same in her home after smelling it in mine). Are the other ones losing their throw too? Or is it just that scent?

Hey gville! There are two factors that may have caused the scent to behave as if it had been reformulated:

          1) the reeds for the newer ones are shorter and possibly be made of a different type of wood

          2) halfway through the bottle and until the very end, the scent kept getting more and more intense. If you are comparing a freshly opened vs the previous bottle, the new one will inotially seem weaker.

My solution when i discovered the difference in reeds was to transfer most of the old reeds to the new bottle and added some new omes in the mix.

I am trying to adjust to the work week after seeing the band Goblin last night. They scored a lot of Italian horror movies from the 70s and 80s, including Dario Argento’s Suspiria, Deep Red, and Tenebre. The concert was so much fun!

Something unusual about Fate, or at least, how it wears on my skin is that it starts out dry and ends up somewhat sweet. Not candy-sweet or Twinkies, but definitely does make that progression.

    SotD = MEM

MEM again, for the fun of it. The lavender is delightful and strange up against the tropical ylang and floral bouquet. I’ll pair it with Schubert’s Die Forelle (The Trout) played on oboe and piano (no voice), because that is another unusual combination, and it was just played on the radio.

Wit is a beautiful scent, and Robin is clever. To wit, Did Ye Get Healed includes a flugelhorn part. The flugelhorn is based on the saxhorns. The saxhorns and saxophones were created by a Mr Sax. Today is National Saxophone Day. And I am a music nerd.

    SOTD = Prada Purple Rain

Song association – Prince’s Purple Rain

Not original but it fits Keep it simple Monday :-)

The bottle has a nice heft to it and the cut glass looks very elegant. The juice smells like a combination of the Absolue and the EDT but the resemblance ends there from the standpoint that Vetiver actually elevates the iris. Pricey, but so worth it.
