Tuesday scent of the day 10/31

Posted by Robin on 31 October 2017 280 Comments

Happy Halloween! It's also World Savings Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm starting off my fougère week with Sarah Jessica Parker Covet.

Reminder: 11/3 will be Fougère Friday...wear a fougère, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the (hideous) Wizard of Oz Wicked Witch of the West 24 oz teapot is $39.99 at Walmart.

Envision something you want, different dress size, joints hurt less doing everyday tasks – and think about that goal being achieved before and during working out.
        It will help.
Play music you like during working out, or do pilates, yoga, or treadmill/stationary bike while watching TV.
        You can do it.
        Cheers, KellyC !!

Thanks, Bear! I walked/jogged 3 miles last night! I had been doing that every evening before I moved and my trip to Korea, but after all of that I got out of my groove. But It was so great last night!

Happy Halloween everyone! Robin, Covet sounds like a perfect fragrance for the day.

I woke up early to assemble my Kuchi Kopi sweater, but got up a bit too early. Now I’m just relaxing before work.

I picked Versace The Dreamer today since Kuchi Kopi is a plastic toy, and Dreamer definitely has a plastic edge. Smells great though!

Inspired by Bear’s SOTD over the weekend and this thangka about samsara I am in Samsara today.

Second cup of French Press coffee

Yesterday I stopped by Clydes (which you know is closing and everything is discounted) and I talked myself away from the edge…
Look at this Samsara body wash..do I need this? Oooooo Mitsouko..this would be nice to buy at a discount..maybe I should step away from the Guerlains..ahh..VdN..I never tried this one..is a blind buy worth it at a discount..hmmm…
Lucky, I put everything back and bought the 1 item I came in to purchase which was not perfume related and was out the door.. baby buddha got a free coloring book from the sales associate. They are so nice in there..too bad its closing

    Happy Halloween everyone.

I don’t know when they are closing..the store is getting really empty. I asked, when I sent you guys that email, and the sales associate said she didn’t know. I am hoping they increase their discount but who knows!

I ended up popping in there but cashed in on makeup (a By Terry lip gloss and Dermablend camo foundation). Didn’t see any perfumes I was dying to have or that aren’t also on online discount sites, but I did see Guerlain French Kiss for any fans. 40% off isn’t bad.

            How is that foundation?

They sell a beauty line there that has a treatment cream that works great under my normal moisturizer to calm sensitivity and redness. Unfortunately no other pharmacies in the city carry that line. They checked Apthorp for me on the westside but they don’t carry it either. I bought two tubes (went back for the second) I left one there but if they increase their percentage off I will go back.
A bottle of Allure ended up in my basket when I was there before, Donatella forgives chanel at 40 percent off..

I have hyperpigmentation on my face and this seems like a good sub for my fantastic but now discontinued concealer. I’m hoping I like it since I bought 2 of them! It’s so rare to get good makeup on sale. I love the By Terry gloss (spicy crush) but they’re super expensive so never bought this one. The 40% off was like trick or treating for adults!

    I didn’t even know Covet was a fougere – I thought I didn’t like fougeres, but I love Covet :)

That teapot his hilarious. I don’t use teapots, and I’m not a Wizard of Oz freak, but I am tempted by the ridiculousness of that pot!

Ormonde Woman today. It is my fall scent as I just got it a few weeks ago.
I love the day after Halloween. As a teacher I feel the class really gels after you get through the parents, costumes, and Kodak moments today. Not that we have not been teaching/learning before today but tomorrow ho!
I am not well versed in fougères, is there an easy list somewhere? I have read the description what it is.

No affiliation, just enabling: I saw the body lotion on sale at MIN NY’s website; $35. It’s in the sale listings. On my phone you have to be patient; the list takes a minute to load each time you scroll.

I like the teapot and most all things Wizard of Oz. It’s a fugly one, for sure.
Another cool day here so I’m wearing the spicy carnation ambery warmth of Opium Fleur d’Shanghai. Softer and airier than the original and a little more floral. Maybe what I wanted Alahiiine to smell like. Nice!

Back in the day (way, way, back) I used to wear Opium. It smelled heavenly on me. Haven’t worn it in decades – I sometimes think about buying it again, but something always keeps me from doing that. No doubt the Opium of today is unlike that of my youth, so it’s probably good that I haven’t tried it again.

Opium is getting some retail space at my local casual department store, which is interesting. They had a mid-aisle display, and it seems out of place since most of the frags there are celebuscents. I never smelled original Opium, but the tester smelled quite like Youth Dew to me.

I have a one third full one ounce bottle that you can have if you want! I don’t know how old it is; it smells like what I remember but I never really wore it an only kept it as reference. I need to make some room in my perfume cabinet!

Katrina, thanks so much for the offer! I think, though, that I am going to stay with my fond olfactive memories of the special chemistry that occurred when my younger self wore Opium. And keep my own perfume cabinet in check. :-)

Does anyone know if it was repromoted in the 2007 timeframe? I remember being in Macy’s and having the SA really talk it up. It smelled great on me, but I couldn’t swing it. Knowing what I do now about reformulations, I wish I’d bought it. Probably just coincidental.

Fougère is my least favourite category but I know I have a sample of Amouage Bracken woman that should count, seeing as bracken is a type of fern. Today I am wearing just some Musc Ravageur body butter as my lungs are still suffering from a lingering hack.

I’m with you on the fougere category. I’ve grown to like most other genres except for this one. Maybe there’s a modern take I have yet to find that will tirn me on to the genre.

Petunia, no, M doesn’t smell animalic to me, although I may be getting a hint of cumin now.

I think M is sweeter and spicier than Bel Ami, although I have to say I’ve only smelled vintage Bel Ami, and they could be more alike now.

Egoïste should definitely be checked out — it insists! :)

I wanted something a little less sweet than what I’ve been wearing recently so I’m wearing Voyage d’Hermes. I still haven’t figured out what makes a fougere. I would never have thought that Covet is a fougere. On the other hand, Fragrantica lists Demeter’s Tomato as an aromatic fougere, and Jicky as an oriental fougere.

A classic fougere will have lavender, woods, oak moss, coumarin, bergamot — some people called it the masculine version of a chypre, but that’s a little misleading since there are feminine fougeres and masculine / unisex chypres. Jicky is a fougere, as is Maja, & so are things like Brut & Stetson & Old Spice — lots of the classic men’s fragrances.

Hi everyone, welcome to my first day of snow! :( ugh, luckily I have the day off. It usually rains or snows on Halloween here. I’m wearing Iris Celadon from the split meet. Yay me, I smell great! I keep smelling my wrist, thinking it reminds me of something. Finally, I realized, it faintly and much more softly, reminds me of Lutece. If anyone remembers. My son stepped on my Kindle, so I’m typing through a cracked screen, hope I didn’t misspell anything. Happy Halloween!

Totally by chance: I randomly opened a decant drawer and thought it felt right for the weather, but did not remember it was Halloween until I saw an adorable unicorn on my bus. Pleased to be joining you in this spooky crypt! Although the orange peel lifted it out of gloom for me.

    SOTD is Teo Cabanel “Alahine”.

    Top: bergamot and ylang-ylang;
    Mid: jasmine, rose, orange flower and black pepper;
Base: iris, cistus, patchouli, benjoin, vanilla, sandalwood and musk.

On my skin, it’s more Alaho-hum than Alahiiiiiiine.

Yesterday started the day in Olibere “Escapade a Byzance”, which was great. Later spritzed a few drops of Heeley “Phoenicia” which worked better in the cold temperatures (we’re down to 4 or 5C) but is still too sweet for me.

Sunday was Parfums d’Empire “Ambre Russe”
    Saturday was Ex Idolo “Ryder”.
For last Friday I had no perfumes left over so I used the remains of a Robert Piguet “Bandit” sample.
    Thu: Teo Cabanel “Julia”
    Wed: Profumum Roma “Acqua Viva”.

No time to post because TOMK and I (a) were enjoying our relaxing week too much and (b) we think we have found a suitable apartment in Malaga. It’s not our dream house – we’re not yet willing to sell up in the UK and throw everything into one roll of the dice in Spain. So we are buying a place that is affordable and ‘nice enough’ and will serve as a bridgehead from which we can retreat, or a stepping stone from which to advance, depending on how the next year or so turn out.

The apartment is basically sound but has been empty for years and needs a lot of interior remodelling. We might be moving in in February.

Anyway, apart from taking up all our time, this has understandably swallowed my perfume budget, and then some. I shall have to be content with what I have already for a while.

SotD = Caron Narcisse Noir edt

Chose this one because the name reminded me of Narcissa Malfoy. She couldn’t have been all bad, right? She did love Draco as a mother should love all her children, no matter how snotty. Don’t see many Harry Potter costumes at Halloween anymore. Give it a few years and nostalgia will probably bring them back as a bumper crop of baby Harrys and toddler Hagrids.

Anywhoo, Narcisse Noir is very pretty and not dark, so far all very proper florals, but time will tell. Perfume names can be misleading.

I felt like I’d fallen through a rabbit hole this morning with all my frantic googling. Juozas Statkevicius? Thangka? Ann Gottlieb? Learn something new everyday here. I love lavender and aromatic colognes so it is great to get schooled on fougeres. The only fougeres I can think of are Brut, Eternity for men, Cool Water (maybe?), and Bracken Man, but that one’s a cheat because there’s a fern leaf on the bottle.

Happy Halloween to those who indulge, and happy Tuesday to everyone. Let’s make it a beautifully fragrant day.

Happy Halloween and thanks to the many folks who wished me happy birthday yesterday!

As predicted, my husband bought me a bottle of Miu Miu–I was hoping he would just get me the mini (that was the link I sent him when he asked), but I wound up with 50 mls. It’s the L’eau Bleue flanker, which I prefer… but. It turns out my father-in-law’s significant other asked to have the perfume come from her, so I believe in the end she paid for most of it. Weirdly that makes me feel better.

In other perfume news, my sample of Aura arrived, the new Mugler. Okay. For the record, I do not get toothpaste, at least not any toothpaste I have ever tried. Camphor? Yes! Tart? Yes! Tropical floral? Yes! Loud? YES! This scent makes me think of a synthetic herbal and flower scented candy throat lozenge, loaded with ascorbic acid, that has somehow got stuck to the bottom of your soap drawer in the bathroom. Have a headache? You may want to pass on this one. If anymore has tried Aura and really loved it, please chime in! I don’t mean to rain on anyone’s parade!!!

Of one thing I am certain, as much trouble as I may have wearing Aura, brushing my teeth with its doppelganger toothpaste product sounds like something extremely unpleasant (but also kind of hilarious–think of the possibilities: “Brighten and whiten with Chanel No. 19! “Freshen your smile with 24 Faubourg” or “maybe Fight plaque with La Vie Est Belle”).

World Savings Day but also World Spending Day. Oddly enough.

This week I have my own theme, which today I’m following with Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz. A church incense and some roses.

Tomorrow morning I’ll be off to visit the graves of my grandparents and meet with the family. I know of a perfect perfume for tomorrow!

And Happy Halloween to those celebrating it.

Happy Halloween! I am wearing Diptyque Essences Incensee 2016 (rose). Lovely Enabler husband got me a gift for our anniversary without asking what perfumes I might like. I told him I have a wishlist on basenotes for future reference. He had gotten me something from Q Brothers in Chicago, which I exchanged for this. He also went and checked my wishlist and also got me Tom Ford Noir Pour Femme. He said that the SA at Neiman Marcus said there was a new scent that has completely sold out every time they get any. Turns out to be F*cking Fabulous and he’s ordered that, as well. Donatella doesn’t count gifts, right? ‘Cuz I would sure have some ‘splaining to do…

Before showering today I was experimenting with Dame Chocolate oil. With Rose Delight oil- interesting. With Queen by Queen Latifah- hot fudge sundae. So after my shower I went with Lonestar Memories, to get that sweet out of my nose, and to give a sniff to my hairstylist, who doesn’t like floral or sweet. I hope she likes it.

    Wassup guys!

Your girl is back at work after being coddled in bed these past few weeks after surgery. Weeks of gently cooked food, fresh fruit, lots of rest, warm baths and friends playing maid, making sure everything is clean and neat. Of course, I step outside and everything is wrong: food is too salty or too sweet, noises are too loud, things are messy and I get a head cold! C’est la vie!

SOTD: Cuir 28 by Le Labo. Close to last bits from a sample bottle. No Halloween revels- just giving out candy to kids, and watching movies on Netflix!

anything good on Netflix to recommend? I watched two very interesting documentaries…one about Israeli cuisine (yeah, i am always thinking about food) whose name escapes me right now and “One of Us”. enjoyed them both and learned a lot. Oh and younger CM8 had me watching Stranger Things with her last night…round two for her, first time for me.

I saw both docs! Excellent, the both of them! I suggest Versailles for an ‘adult’ series- very sexy, but incredribly well plotted. There is Korean drama called Mother, which is excellent, and a truly terrifying adaptation of Stephen King’s Geralds Game.

In theory, the procedures are such that you can return to work after two weeks, but honestly I should work from home!

The Cuir 28 does not smell like weed on me. I live next to cannabis growers, and their stuff is richer and sweeter than Cuir 28. The cannabis oil I use for pain has a rather warm, subtle hay like scent, like saffron.

Happy Halloween! I’m feeling suitably witchy today, so all the stars must be lined up.

I’m still in the dregs of Chergui from yesterday and probably won’t apply anything else until later. I’m at Silver Falls State Park for the next couple of days and was just informed this is bear and cougar country and both species seems to be attracted to all kinds of scents including perfume, toothpaste, and dryer sheets. Hmmm.

I got next to zero sleep last night because some idiot (yes, I’m judging!) in the section across the way kept setting off his car alarm at various times in the dead of night. Hence the witchy mood. Plus, it’s COLD!!! Yes, you read that right. C.O.L.D. My water was frozen when I finally surfaced this morning and I had a heck of a time making coffee because my cans of butane fuel were so cold they wouldn’t give me a decent flame.

When I get back from my hike in the wilds, I’m going for the jungle in l’Elephant. Perfect weather for it right now.

    Smell well y’all ✌????

Still no fougere for me. I’m in Black Perfecto, courtesy of the ever-generous kpaint. I like it, mostly because I’ve got absolutely nothing else like it. The cherry is so strong (I don’t know why I didn’t believe all your proclamations of CHERRYOMG) that I can’t really smell anything else, except maybe some almond, though cherries themselves sometimes smell almondy, so maybe I can’t smell ANYTHING besides cherries. Will I need more after I work through the ~3 mL decant I’ve got? I really don’t think so. Uniqueness might be necessary but is not sufficient for a purchase.

Feeling much better about life today than I did yesterday :) Happy Halloween!

I know there’s a lot of crossover between cherry and almond (are they botanically related?) and was thinking about that last night when I wore Black Perfecto. I dedided that I get no almond at all – just black cherry. Perhaps more specifically, morello cherries in syrup, and maybe even more specifically, in some kind of delicious cocktail.

That last bit is purely fantasy, though, as I’ve never smelled or eaten a morello cherry in syrup, nor had a cocktail made with them ;)

FWIW, I read in an old cookbook that cherry pits taste/smell a bit like almonds. Older cherry cobbler recipes sometimes called for unpitted cherries to take advantage of the almond flavor.
As for me and my dental work, we prefer pitted cherries. ????

Best of days to you, all. Today is viva day for that student. Yesterday’s meeting with her was really quite good, so I am permitting myself to be cautiously hopeful that she will do OK. Please, please, may she do OK. I just want her to get through, do her amendments, and beetle off in a southerly direction, never again to be part of my life.

I decided I needed something caaaaaalllllming, and chose Temps d’un Fete. It really is gorgeous. Gorgeous. Wasted on the student, probably, but i’m revelling in it, all those besutifully blended shades of green. It’s like walking along a path in a park, all bordered with different textures of shrubs and ferns, quite dim and quiet, then coming to a gap in planting and feeling warm bright sun for a few seconds. It’s lovely enough to get me on a plane for the long haul back to Paris so I can buy a new bottle. Yum!

I’m wearing a new skirt and bomber jacket today. The dear man has this quizzical look that says he doesn’t like my outfit. The skirt has a modest stripe; the jacket has a panel of spots. I line the combo, it looks cool. The dear one thinks I look muddled. Perhaps both opinions are valid. The success of the outfit will depend entirely on my attitude, but that’s true of every outfit. The kittens haven’t commented, being far too busing mountaineering up and down the wardrobes. My shirts are basecamp, a pile of jigsaw boxes in the far back corner seems to be the summit. Alexander is clearly Ed Hilary, Titus is doggedly determined but not as strong, and little Eric is a bit hopeless. He’s just a little a waft of white fur and hopefulness, but he’s not strong enough to tow hinsekf up like the stripes. He tries…fails and falls…tries…fails. A metaphor for life in a small purring machine.

Well, I’m about to plunge into my day. Be well, all.

I looked on Fragrantica to see what I might have that qualifies as a fougere and I own nothing. It’s not surprising, really, because I don’t like lavender in scents. I think my Ambre Precieux has lavender listed as a note, but it must be deeply buried because I don’t smell it at all. So I’ve gone a different route this week, in sandalwood, and today I’m wearing Champagne de Bois.

Love the teapot and I don’t even drink tea. Or own dust-collecting geegaws.

I liked Atlantic Ambergris a lot. Actually I liked all of the samples from the new batch – I am in deep trouble

Ha, I thought you might like them, since I am not liking them at all due to the animalics. :)

The only one I like is the Atlantic Ambergris. The others were weird/unpleasant on me. More money saved!

I’m wearing Dzing! today in tribute to one of my very favorite books, Something Wicked This Way Comes. I always re-read it in the week leading up to Halloween, and it never fails to impress me. (It doesn’t scare me like it did when I first read it decades ago, but now other parts of it give me the willies.)

Happy Halloween! May all the goblins you see be adorable toddlers just trying to get some candy.

Ray Bradbury was amazing! My favorite was The Illustrated Man which was about a guy whose entire body was tattooed. At night the tattoos would come to life to play out a story. Creepy and amazing, like a train wreck you can stop watching. ☠️

My parents used to read me stories from The Illustrated Man. I had no idea until I read it for myself the first time how scary the parts that they “forgot” to read aloud were – the ending absolutely terrified me.

        Love, love, love Ray Bradbury.

Somehow I don’t think I’ve ever read The Illustrated Man. But Something Wicked This Way Comes is one of my all-time favorites.

I finally read Something Wicked This Way Comes last October and loved it so much. That’s a good tradition you have to re-read it every year. Earlier this month I read Bradbury’s The Halloween Tree.

I think The Illustrated Man might be too much for me (I’m a wimp), but I have a wonderful memory of my 6th grade teacher reading us Edgar Allen Poe’s The Telltale Heart. She was an expressive reader and held a room full of 11 year-olds spellbound. I can still hear that “thump, thump – thump, thump.” Chilling.

    Happy Halloween!

Wearing Lancome Magie Noire. Last drops from a vintage bottle of the parfum, the one with the glass stopper and Halloween orange and burgundy v-stripes going down the center… they don’t make ’em like that anymore. And to make things super-witchy, down went a drop of Tabu in the cleavage. Hell hath no fury….

I’m dressed up as Jennifer Parker (Marty McFly’s girlfriend in Back to the Future) for a work Halloween costume party. I wore MOR’s Lychee Flower rollerball today because it’s fruity and flowery and I think Jennifer Parker would wear something like that ha! Yes, I put too much thought into it. I have to say, this stuff really hangs in there. It’s almost 3:00 and I can still smell it on me.

You all smell marvelous of course! Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween, NST! It’s good to be back. Like has been incredibly hectic/stressful the past couple of weeks, but I think things are slowing down to a reasonable pace. (Knock on wood that I didn’t jinx it!)

Yikes! on that teapot! Fugly is indeed the perfect description for it.

Very happy to see both Bear and Poodle post here recently.

SOTD = ELdO’s Like This, from the sample stash. Between the pumpkin and the immortelle, I think this works for the sweeter side of Halloween.

Wearing Lush’s Sikkim Girls (Big-White-Flowers! Really big) and wondering if we’ll have any trick-or-treaters tonight. In 17 years, I think we’ve had maybe 10 or 12. I miss seeing all the kids in their costumes. Of course, that’s offset by the fact that I’ll have lots of leftover candy to eat. :-)

    Happy Halloween, all!

We live so far outside a neighborhood that we never get trick-or-treaters. In fact, after we built the house on the farm, I would take my children back to our old neighborhood to trick-or-treat because if we stayed where we could just walk from house to house, we’d only have visited four houses.

:-) My grandmother grew up on a farm, and when I asked her about what she did on Halloween as a child, she said said she never trick-or-treated: “I wasn’t walking a mile and a half for a popcorn ball or an apple.”

Not on theme, either for the CP or holiday, as I very groggily grabbed and sprayed a decant of Nobile 1942 Ambra Nobile this morning (thanks, clarissa!) It is YUM! My BdI split arrived today so I had to spritz a bit on my hand, and together the 2 conspired to smell a bit like Coromandel. The combo made me realize I’d never noticed the aldehydes in Coromandel before, but I think they’re there, eh?
