Friday scent of the day 10/13

Posted by Robin on 13 October 2017 267 Comments

It's Friday the 13th. Our very lucky community project for today: wear a fragrance by Aurélien Guichard or Jean Guichard, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in the quirky gardenia (with a great bottle to match) Narciso by Narciso Rodriguez, by Aurélien Guichard.

Reminder: 10/20 will be Reeking Havoc Friday...in honor of Holly (who is frequently reeking havoc), wear as many perfume samples at once as you can stand. Suggested by FearsMice.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Did you try CdN yet? The discovery set is a pretty good deal from the website. 7.5ml sprays of the whole line.

I liked it but rarely wore it so swapped it a while back. I think I needed a touch of sweetness in it. Very elegant iris-leather, though!

I think its beautiful but I want more more more!
I feel the same way about AG line also, I want more more more..but they are short lived. Or rather maybe blend into my skin too fast. Some more sillage please!

            13 October 2017 at 3:02 pm

When I wrote the same way about the AG line I meant Annick Goutal. Both AG lines are short lived on my skin..

    No scent yet, because

I am going to Chanel beauty cabin in my city for a free surprise procedure! (I mean… I’ve spent my salary there last month, so it’s in all honesty not so free…)
Very excited and going to try one of les Exclusifs there on my way out:) Something that I haven’t tried yet… Bel Respiro? N 18? Who knows.

And I finally overcame my fear of my country post office services and ordered a full set of Zoologist samples. I’m really hoping it’ll cross the globe safely and land to a loving home (to my home!!!) :) *fingers crossed*

That made me LOL about spending your salary there so it really not being free. I always laugh at that too when someone offers me a discount or tells me I’v earned something free- they’re really just congratulating me for spending so much money with them haha. Enjoy it!

Yes, all those free gifts are included in the price of everything they sell.
And all it really means is that when they don’t offer something free too you – you are being robbed of your money and you are obviously overpaying way too much =)

I can bring three guests for a free all expenses paid except alcohol lunch at Nordstrom. Imasked my mom if she wanted to go and all she wanted to know was how much I spent there to get a “free” lunch which is not really free.

I am wearing the amazing Knightsbridge – perfect for this time of year.
I was so excited when I realized that this scent had been created by one of the perfumers featured this week.

This scent is simply breathtaking – leather, rose, nutmeg and angel wings, but I never hear anyone talk about it.

I have only two Guichards and I wasn’t going to wear Obsession because a) I’m at work and b) it’s been reformulated into mediocrity and isn’t really representative, so I’m wearing lots of Anisia Bella, a fascinating bright-green thing that somehow stays bright and green for hours, much more herbal than anisic to my nose.

Wearing vintage Calvin Klein Obsession (Jean Guichard), thanks to Kpaint. Just wonderful and intoxicating as it was in the 80’s. I have a newer release, but nothing like the vintage.

Just finished a 3 hour breakfast meeting that ended up with so many aggravations and tensions. A new manager trying to prove she can get things done faster and better with many unrealistic and dictatorial ideas. She found lots of resistance. The work environment has become heavy and unbearable lately. Let’s see how all this is going to end.

    Have a happy Friday everyone!

Enjoy your vintage Obsession! As is nearly always the case, the original is SO MUCH BETTER than the most recent iterations. My miniature is about ten years old and it can’t hold a candle to the eighties version: I bet what’s on the shelves now is even less interesting.

The sample Kpaint sent me is from the 80’s and it is glorious! My bottle is 12 years old and it is very good and close to the vintage, but it lacks the magic and beauty of those early years. When I try vintages I always treat them as different perfumes so I enjoy them and the new ones without any frustration.

On the other hand, vintage bottles are almost always cheaper than new ones. It’s not always the case, but the 100 ml of Obsession that I made pl67’s decant from cost less than $20.

I’ve got multiple bottles of vintage Shalimar and Chanel No 5, all of which I bought for ~$25.

Twins with Robin in Narciso. Only Guichard I have. This is an interesting one for me. Based on reviews, I made a point of trying it in Bloomies right after launch. There was something that seemed harsh to me, and I was shaking my head. Tried a couple of times. Many months later, I tried it again. Although I still had a reaction to something screechy (to me) in the opening, it quickly went away. And I began sighing. Had to have it. I discovered the creaminess that others mentioned. Funny how that works.

I still have nothing by either Guichard, so unable to meet today’s challenge. Instead, my SOTD is Equistrius. It’s all sweet leather on me, no cocoa in sight (smell?). Lovely for another crisp fall day here. The trees in my office parking lot are turning quickly this year and are just beautiful right now so I’m taking my “real” camera to work with me. :)

I went on a bit if a shopping spree since I decided I need to up my professional look- I’ve gotten rather lazy over the years. Why don’t I ever shop at Ann Taylor LOFT? Such nice tops and great sale deals…

On a different note, I got the new little Le Labo body product discovery set: Hinoki shampoo, conditioner, and body cream, and mandarine shower oil. I’m kind of meh about them. The hinoki smells like generic synthetic wood smell to me and I think I don’t like shower oil, period. It has this ammonia smell that lingers in skin afterwards. Had the same issue with L’Occitane almond shower oil.
The Le Labo basil shower gel smells really good but they didn’t have sample sizes. Anyway, won’t be needing full sizes of any.

In the spirit of brevity, they are almost identical to me which I think Monsieur Guerlain said as well.

I think the 2009 has more patchouli, is fuller somehow and overall preferable but they’re about 90% or so similar. The new version has more rose to my nose.

Not sure if BP is available in the states yet but I’d say buy it when you can as, sadly, we know that Reformulation (and Winter) is Coming! Within a year or two BP will get an inevitable formula change as well. Enjoy it while you can…good life advice in general… ????

My recipe for somewhat-better (to me, obs.) hot dandelion drink, for my 18-oz teapot:

Throw about 10 or so cardamom seeds in a mortar and crush, put in bottom of pot before putting in the strainer

in the strainer: 2 scant spoonfuls of roasted dandelion root, 1/2 spoonful roasted chicory

steep about 7 1/2 minutes. take out strainer. the cardamom stays in the pot so the cardamom flavor gets stronger on the 2nd cup.

sometimes I do this with bits of cinnamon bark instead.

Hmmm… you are way ahead of me. I have been drinking Dandy Blend, Roma Kaffree, and various flavors of Teeccino–variety if not quality :-) . Where do you buy the roasted dandelion root and roasted chicory? What is the consistency of each?

And I have never tried any of those, so I may actually be behind you! I started with Traditional Medicinals Dandelion Root tea bags and moved on from there, because I drink a fair amount of dandelion, so cheaper and more convenient to buy loose. Plus, not surprisingly, the loose tastes better. But maybe you won’t like them as well as what you’re drinking! I think all of those are geared towards trying to taste like coffee.

Frontier Natural Organic Roasted Chicory Granules and Starwest Botanicals Organic Dandelion Roasted Cut. Both available on Amazon in 1 lb. bags. Consistency — the Dandelion is a fairly rough cut, the chicory is a bit smaller, but not so small it goes through a tea strainer.

Couldn’t find my bit of Calypso today, so I went for a throwdown: on my left wrist, a goodly drizzle of Douglas Hannant, and on my right, a like amount of Petit Fracas (both Aurelien Guichard, for Robert Piguet). Both are Fracas offspring and both are pleasant, though as time goes on I’m beginning to prefer the Douglas Hannant for not being sweet and cocoa-powdery.

SOTD is my only Guichard, Chinatown. I quite like its spicy aspect. One of my favorite perfume bottles anywhere.
Story: My mom has sung in her church choir for at least 40 years but recently it’s become a challenge to go to choir practice. Apparently she sits next to a woman who wears some very strong perfume and as soon as she is there my mom’s voice starts to get all froggy and her head stuffs up and she can’t hit the high notes any more. I can still hear the frog in her throat when I talk to her afterwards. When I suggested she just tell the lady nicely about this problem my mom said “Oh no, she is so sensitive, I couldn’t do that.” She just doesn’t know what to do. I told her to explain it to the choir director so she could provide some reason for moving my mom. I’m telling this story because I know sometimes on here we feel exasperated by other people’s perfume sensitivities–and I’ve felt the same–but there really are times when it’s a problem for someone.

I’ve been equally exasperated but yeah, I’ve relaxed about that. I sat next to a woman in a movie theater who was wearing nuclear amounts of a perfume I find very cloying and I had to move. So I get it. I hope they can work something out for your mom!

Agree she should talk to the director, who can set / announce a generic policy. I was in a class once where it was announced frequently that we needed to not wear scents because of severe allergies. My good friend was the incredibly sensitive one, and I’d see her reactions. I never wore scent around her. Not even lotion. It could be an absolutely gorgeous scent, and still create a problem.

SOTD is Obsession, just sprayed on at my local department store – it’s not agreeing with me, I do love strong scents so I thought I would like it, but it just smells like super spicy aftershave to me :(

Reading all of the comments about the vintage helps me to understand why this was such a bit hit, I can’t imagine anyone really enjoying this as it is now – but they must still be selling it.

There was also a big display for Opium, which I thought was interesting – I sprayed it and it smelt like Youth Dew to me.

They also re-arranged the entire perfume display giving the most real estate to “fragrance for women and men”, as far as I could tell they just intermingled all of the same bottles that used to be under the headers “fragrance for women” & “fragrance for men”

TDC Oriental Lounge today, which smelled just gorgeous right up until I stepped outside into the smoky air. I’ve been complaining about the air quality a bunch here on NST, but someone reminded me that in many places, this is just…normal air. Specifically, the air smells and feels to me like the air in Delhi just before the rains. Millions of people live their entire lives like this, perpetually a little under-oxygenated and with reduced lung capacity. Gives me a new appreciation for the importance of clean air efforts. Does anyone have tips for good clean air charities to donate to? Preferably in poorer countries, where my money could have higher impact, but I know there are places domestically with terrible air, too.

On another note, I participated in a workout class yesterday for the first time, and today, my entire body is in agony. Augh.

Turns out I had more Guichards than I thought. I apparently didn’t really read Jean Guichard’s list when I looked at it because somehow I managed to miss that Obsession and L’Air du Temps were his.

I have a little mini of L’Air du Temps that I picked up in an antique store a few years ago, so I decided to wear that today. Totally not me, but it’s nice nonetheless.

I need to get out more! I don’t have a single Guichard! I think one of the only ones I’ve tried is Chinatown, which I know everyone loves but it left me cold, like every Bond I’ve tried, for whatever reason. Maybe I should come back to it now, years later, but at that price point…maybe not.

I’m wearing Aftelier Ancient Resins. Was listening to Leonard Cohen last night and really just need to remind myself today to chill out (ha! with the kind of season I’m having at work). This scent grounds me.

Only Guichard I own is – Loulou in the amazing blue bottle. Haven’t sniffed it for years. I quite like it, first appeared 1987, and very much of that era. Powerful so glad I only spritzed once!!! Think it would be cozy on a winter day. Cheap as chips too.

I’m not in the mood for Lou Lou or Baghari, my only Guichards, so I put on Hummingbird. The opening is much too sweet for me but the drydown is lovely. I’m glad to see that Camel has a release date, too. I enjoyed it when I tested it. It’s much softer than the notes imply.

Happy weekend or Friday 13th, depending in where you are. I am in bed drinking coffee made from coffee beans ( soon to be my second cup ) and wearing Zadig & Voltaire This is Him ( young Guichard…smells a bit like JM Myrrh and Tonka with vetiver added ) and Loulou ( mature G ) but plan to switch to Diptyque Moheli for a ylang ylang burst ( thanks to Lilibet and the fact that I could find this perfume in NZ ). Moheli reminds me of Body Shop Moringa but much better and it layers really beautifully with VC& A Orchidee Vanille. Another grey morning …. Endless winter skies but with a fluro zap of cerise rhodendrum and new leaves on the maples and silver birches. I watched the movie Personal Shopper last night and felt a little underwhelmed by it. It has had such dazzling reviews that I think it must be me ..so I might watch it again. I had a similar underwhelmed response to Nicole Krauss’s latest novel .

    Top: bergamot and lily;
    Mid: rose and orris;
    Base: patchouli, amber and castoreum.

I wore Calypso today along with ElisaP and a few others. I am a bit under the weather today but new samples arrived so I am testing L’Erbolario Meharees on the back of one hand and SL Fille en Aiguilles on the other. FeA is so strong that I can’t smell the other scent without pressing my hand directly against my nose. From what I can tell, Meharees is similar to Shalimar. FeA opened with spices, pine and sharp incense. The mid has settled down but gingerbread has added to the mix. It’s a little overwhelming and sharper than I expected. My sense of smell is probably off but It’s not working for me. I may have to scrub the Serge.

Too bad about FeA. Its one of my favourites and the one that sent me straight down the rabbit hole. After a long no-perfume-wearing-period, i wanted to try perfume again.
And i started looking online into the whole fragrance market, i wanted to find brands that were more serious about their scents (Meaning: doing more than slabbing a logo on a bottle of candy-water and hiring well known actresses to promote it).
I saw the name of a guy named Serge Lutens mentioned a lot…and the rest is history :)

I love FeA year round, but most people safe it for winter/cold days.

Late to the party as usual. I’m in LouLou from a mini that I got at LAX awhile back. It seems sweeter than the original so I’m thinking it’s been reformulated big time. The bottle is so cute though.

All the other fragrances in the same collection were reformulated as well- Lauren, Anais Anais and Paloma Picasso. It’s heartbreaking.

    SOTD = Chanel Coromandel EDT

So good. It is my first 2017 Fall weather wearing (and Fall, I hope you are here to stay). I wonder what happened to all the Les Exclusifs EDTs that have not been sold by the end of the EDT phase-out?

    Commuting Woes No. 399:

I saw the most egregious behavior yet today and made me lose faith in humanity. I generally see some of the same commuters depending upon which train I catch. There’s a hard of hearing guy who speaks at the top of his lungs because he thinks no one can hear him and he talks to this guy who really ought to be a star in My 600 lb. Life (ok, I am exaggerating but I’m probably off by about 100 lb.) Every single time I’ve seen 500 lb. guy, he’s waiting for the train to arrive, gets on and all is well as he has his choice of seats (he takes up two seats). This morning, he jiggled in after the train had partially filled up and there were no adjacent seats. He saw his hearing impaired friend who happened to be seated with an open seat next to him. He went over and started up a conversation. After a minute of chit chat, he decided to sit on the single seat and practically crushed the guy seated on the other side of the bench! The guy who got sat on quickly got up and sat on another open seat. I saw this unfold and I can only shake my head at how inconsiderate and rude 500 lb. guy was. He easily could have waited for the next train, or asked his friend if he wouldn’t mind giving up his seat (or his friend could have voluntarily given up his seat). He could also have just stood the entire time – not pleasant but the rest of us do that when there are no seats. There were no apologies to the guy who had to move.

Yikes! So sorry your new boss is a jerk. At my company, just about the only things that could get one fired without a warning and failure to adhere to an action plan are fraud, sexual harassment (but this takes a while to prove), intolerance of diversity (this, too, requires internal investigation). Incompetence or failure to follow procedures are not grounds for immediate firing.

I have the same Obsession from kpaint but I have not tried it yet. I hope to find my mini of it from almost 30 years for comparison.

I want it to start being Fall! ;) (I miss coromandel and all my other autumn perfumes)

As for your #399, just imagine the same guy on a plane…

Wow, I wore Coromandel tonight too, maybe for the first time this year though it is probably top 3 all time for me. I’m so worried about running out! I wonder how the EDP stacks up? You and I smell outstanding.

I had nothing. My sample of Chinatown and decant of Futur are both long gone (but were fun while they lasted), and I didn’t make it to the mall for a sample of Gucci Guilty. (Did everyone else know that GG has lilac in it? Why is this the first I’m hearing about it?) So instead I’m in Lancôme Poême from the Freebiemeet, with thanks to Katrina. It’s a big yellow floral, and I’m enjoying it. I never seem to hear much about yellow florals, unlike the white variety. Maybe we could do a yellow floral community project? Anyway, have a great weekend, everyone.
