Happy Almost-Friday, and happy Strawberry Cream Pie Day! What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm at about a 7 or an 8 on the skank scale, in Robert Piguet Bandit. I stole the idea from Lillibet, yesterday.
Reminder: 9/29 will be Skank Friday! Wear something skanky. If you need help, try here or here. Suggested by Dawn and Ihadanidea.
The definition of skanky, from A Perfumista Lexicon: a fragrance with animalic or other “sexy” notes. Skanky has pejorative connotations in “regular” slang, but among many perfumistas, it is meant as a compliment. The use of the term to apply to perfume was popularized by March at Perfume Posse.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
I needed to meet people and use public transport today, so I decided to choose something not skanky. SOTD is Bois Farine.
very soft if I remember it right. When I ride public transit I wear loud stuff in hopes that the crazy will sit elsewhere. I have been stuck in some very bad seating at times. Hopefully your is more civilized 🙂
When I do that the crazy PICK ME to sit next to. Or children.
Soft, but I would not call it a skin scent. Projection seems to be enough to be noticed by a person next to you.
As for loud stuff, I had the same thought Ede97005 had: some crazy people may actually be attracted by loud perfumes. 🙂 Actually, I got a nearly empty bus on my ride to the destination and a half-empty one on my way back, so fortunately I did not need a scent to scare people away. 😀
Songes!
Yuzu Temple tea
Songes! Just wanted to repeat that I smell fab!
could you describe your tea more?
From the website :
Bright green tea
& Japanese yuzu
This surprising blend, with its evocative name, is based on a fine green tea.
It boasts the pleasantly round acidity of citrus fruit, the aromatic richness and peppery notes of mild spices, plus the rind of real Japanese Yuzu (halfway between lemon and mandarin orange).
cool, thanks for the infoI will look it up
If you like green tea this one is nice, ….not sure where you are in the world but if you are not in France you can find this blend online in the USA
I can’t hear you, what perfume are you wearing?:)
NYC smells like Songes today 🙂
I can smell you downtown! Terrific ????
That sounds like a nice tea, I had a cup of Kusmi’s BB Detox when I came home, it sounds similar, but with grapefruit instead of yuzu.
I love Songes in autumn and winter, it really shines in cooler weather.
No skanky perfumes as working today, wearing L’Temps d’une Fete.
Are you going to skank it up tomorrow?
Ooooh, smelling pretty today!
Happy Almost Friday Day!! SOTD is Smell Bent Gypsy because it’s just so easy and pretty, but not boring.
Getting the BAV cleaned and washed to prepare for hitting the road again, looking forward to it! Finger printed for the millionth time this morning. You would think there would be a nationwide register for this kind of thing. Totally inefficient systems at work once again…
The van is sparkling like a diamond!!
Gypsy is a goodie!! Mmmmmmm
There are national police checks. Where I live, they are good for twelve months? They charge nominal fees for a copy.
$65 bucks every time for me because it goes to FBI for background check. I’m not complaining about the cost because I get reimbursed. BUT, it doesn’t seem to make sense to do this with every license application because it’s going to the SAME federal agency. They are probably so sick of Deva at this point????
It sounds like they could be more organized about the licensing. They need a better system. Of course, it’s probably about the money too.
Yes, it’s always about money. *sigh*
maybe there are multiple Devas
Heaven forbid!
It doesn’t seem to make sense and sounds like a drag but agree with Petunia about the money part.
I agree with Petunia about the money part, too. Inefficient systems are the bane of my existence and they seem to be replicating at the speed of light.
APOM. Is that skanky? I like it anyway.
Seriously, I think whether something is skanky is up to you! Does it smell animalic or dirty to you?
BTW, here is our definition:
Skanky: a fragrance with animalic or other “sexy” notes. Skanky has pejorative connotations in “regular” slang, but among many perfumistas, it is meant as a compliment. The use of the term to apply to perfume was popularized by March at Perfume Posse.
from: https://nstperfume.com/2008/04/25/a-perfumista-lexicon/
Ha, here it’s Thursday and just now occurs to me that maybe I should have put this in the project description. Oops!
Sorry, that was just a rhetorical question.
HA, then I am sorry!
Nothing skanky today, maybe tomorrow. I did see several l’artisan scents on sale on zulliy this morning. I was tempted
You should try the discounters first. I looked at the Zulily prices and compared them to Fragrancenet (no affiliation) and there was a definite difference in price. The problem with Fragrancenet is that the discount changes. Today it is 30%. I’ve always been satisfied with their product.
I have never heard of them, I will check it out
Many discounters also list on Amazon as associated sellers, so it’s also worth checking there.
I like Zulily. You wait forever for shipping but their selection is awesome.
Teo Cabanel Alahine, from a sample. Not quite me but it’s REALLY good, plush and rich (and just a bit of skank in the drydown).
Alahiiiiiiine!
It took four wearings (saying, “This isn’t really me,” the whole time) to make me fall.
The sample’s pretty big so I’m going to give it a few more goes. Who knows? Maybe I’ll fall, too.
It wasn’t love at first sniff for me either but then it grew on me… until it reached the size of a full bottle 😉
You’ve been warned.
Ditto on what Undina said
Ha, good thing I gave up the third time 😉
Alahine is beautiful and have a very special place in my heart.
I went for sensual instead of skank today. Dame Perfume Musk Oil – plum and musk envelop me in a rich haze.
Hmmm. Yes. That is me- no skank, just sensual And I love musk oil scents! You smell lovely!
Eau d’Hermès today 🙂
Yes to Eau d’Hermès! I was hoping this one would get some play this week. A gold star goes to you for wafting where other noses fear to tread. 🙂
Yay!
you smell great, I wish Hermes made samples of the classics.
Jubilation 25, from a sample but I see a bottle in the not so distant future. I’m trying to reason that I already own Thérèse and Diorella and that this one is similar. Still, I adore it, and I know I will wear it a lot.
I think they are different enough to own all three. 🙂
Scent twins! And I’ve occasionally seen travel sets at the discounters – not quite as expensive as a FB.
I have my eye on a full bottle at a discounter, it will be my 4th FB Amouage.
Azuree
funny that the name sounds blue, the scent seems greenish/brown to me.
is it skanky? I don’t really think so, but it is powerful, maybe more pimpy than skanky.
Ha! We should do a pimpy week, I have a few that would fall into that category.
What does that MEAN?
Well, I think that’s probably open to interpretation. Urban dictionary describes it as “something that is pimped out or done extremely well with more bells, whistles and bling than it possibly should have.”
My first pimpy perfumes that came to mind were Obsession and Casmir. Both big and kind of over the top, but I love them anyway!
Oooh that makes a lot of sense. I’ll start thinking of scents that fit so as to be prepared when the time comes.
Azuree is nice(my decant went AWOL). I think you’re spot on with the smell colors. I don’t find it skanky at all. I think it’s a pretty sophisticated and elegant leather (so high-end escort service, maybe?).
Yes, I like your analogy much better 🙂 I was also thinking it’s since sparkly, leathery and mossy – its like a woman riding a horse in the sunshine through a mossy Forest – not skanky it all
I have a big bottle of azuree– I’m happy to send you some if you are in need!
No skank for me with Azuree, either. It’s a challenging one for me to parse, though, if I recall correctly.
One thing I like about it is that it has a strong presence, and it stays with you – the night I wore it out I did get several compliments which is always nice
Wearing Bond No.9 New York Oud. As I mentioned before, it smells of burnt meat. It is strange but there is something about it that I really like and enjoy!
My husband would like that. He loves to grill!
Perfect for him then! 😀
I can’t get away with skanky during the work week. The Perfume Grinch would pass out immediately…..LOL
I went with Clarins Eau Dynamisante. This is just soooooo good, understated, and refreshing. Good stuff.
I just had a discussion with the Perfume Grinch, and he wants NST to know that anyone who participates in the Friday challenge tomorrow will be detectable to his nose (in Atlanta) from wherever in the world you are…..HA HA HA HA (So spray away, everyone!) Blow him out! 🙂
Haha that’s awesome. I’m waiting for a sample from Luckyscent that would have him running for the hills. Hint: it’s an ELdO ????????
And I need to try the Clarins – your enthusiasm for it makes me smile!
Oh no! Do not say it is Secretions Magnifiques 80…
???? have you tried it?! Where my perfume journey takes me I just go along for the ride
I have a terrifying story with S.M. that almost everybody here knows 😀
Good luck! Please, report back.
Oh no!!!
Yes, I’m curious as to what you think of it. I don’t know anyone who has tried it.
The advice given to me was to try it outside. Should be here tomorrow.
Tell him we all love him but don’t really care what he thinks of our perfume.
Just a PSA announcement. Clarins website has 20% off friends and family….no affiliation.
Thanks for the heads up!
is there a code?
It runs from 10/01 – 10/15 on the website only
code is FRIENDS17
NICE!!! Thanks for the info!!!! 🙂
Ambre Sultan today in celebration of this cool, cloudy Fall day that I’ve been waiting for all summer – it’s my favorite kind of weather!
I love ambers, and that’s one of the best. You smell great!
You smell great!
I’m still waiting for the appropriate weather for this and all other Fall favorites.
Yum. Got some in the swap and also looking forward to cooler weather, but only because I can wear some of my fall/winter lovelies.
Wonderful amber! A favorite.
Triple strength coffee.
Workout.
I got gas in the tank
I got money in the bank
I got news for you baby
You’re looking at the
DIVA !!!!
😉
LOLOLOL
Black velvet strapless gown, tiny pink lace beneath, huge diamond earrings, fini.
Now the party don’t start ’til I walk in……..
😉
LOLOLOL
Carpe Diem.
Peace.
RIP Hugh Hefner, the ‘sexual revolution’ would have been different without him.
I read the an article about Hugh in the WSJ this morning, they printed the letter to his readers in the very first magazine.
And now I have your song of the day as an earworm. Might have to chase it out with something on YouTube.
Grand Neroli for me today. It was the last of the Discovery Set sample, too. I love neroli as a note, and I really liked this. Not enough to buy a full bottle, but definitely a decant.
I love Grand Neroli!
So good! Grand Neroli is one of my favorites from Atelier.
After a big thunderstorm yesterday evening, the temperature has dropped from 30C to 12C overnight. We are now back to our regularly scheduled fall weather after 16 days of record-breaking dry heat. Just in time for skank Friday!
I am celebrating with Salome. Enjoy, Perfume Grinch!
We are having that storm right now. Huge flashes of lightening, and it is almost pitch dark outside. If it clears the humidity though, I am all good
Salome!! Yum!
O la la, you smell divine!
you smell great, love Salome.
SOTD is Le Labo Rose 31 in all its cumin-y glory. Some days this is tame and some days the cumin just comes out and makes it skanky. I did my usual two big sprays but in honor of skank week, I may just do one or two more. Working at home has its advantages. ????
Sort of scent twins. Used the Rose 31 shower gel and lotion but the perfume sends me over the edge and not in a good way! Enjoy!!!
I had some of that; they have it in the hotel bathrooms at a place my mother stayed at!
You’ve both mentioned cumin and I tried it and never even noticed it. I’ll have to try it again.
I don’t smell it either – and I wear this perfume regularly AND I dislike cumin. So maybe it just behaves differently with us? 🙂
I think a combination of things may be happening: you both may have a higher tolerance to cumin and/or Le Labo’s batch variations have come into play. How can a perfume remain consistent from one bottle to the next if they’re all bottled in different places, by difference people, by hand?
*different people, of course. 🙂
I’m kind of convinced that body chemistry plays a big role here. Some skin will amplify skanky notes; some will tone it way down.
I think dry or clean skin amps it up on me. Stuff that can smell sweaty smells less sweaty when it’s not on freshly showered skin. Or was it the other way around?
Le Labo Rose 31 smells like dirty socks.
I’m in Parfum de Therese today!
And I’m realizing a few of my bottles have gone off. 🙁 Prada Infusion d’Iris smelled like vinegar (so glad I tested it on a tissue first!) and L’Ambre des Merveilles smelled odd, too. They are about 5 years old. Might replace L’Ambre des Merveilles with a 15ml, I can’t imagine not having some!
Sad face. I wish there were more small bottles out there, I have too many to ever make it through all of my large bottles.
Yes, I love small bottles! The Infusion d’Iris was only 1 oz, so I had actually almost used it up.
They go bad faster when there’s a lot of air in the bottle. When something gets to that point, best to finish it quickly!
I find small bottles ‘turn’ more than larger ones.
YMMV
I wonder why that is? Do small bottles have less effective caps? Are we more likely to travel with the small bottles, therefore exposing them to more temp and light?
If I had to guess, it’s due to less aeration. Smaller bottle, less air to oxygenate and break down the juice.
kpaint, wouldn’t that result in smaller bottles turning LESS quickly then?
Oh – yes! lol. I thought that’s what people were saying, and in my head I was thinking about minis, which do tend to last forever. People really find large bottles to preserve better than smaller ones? I’m surprised by that.
It is strange. I had my Infusion d’Iris for much longer – and it still seems alright.
Does it get got in summer where you store your bottles?
I store them away from light but yes, this bottle has lived in some pretty warm apartments…
If you haven’t used a perfume for a while, the problem might be just the dried perfume in the sprayer. I would spray a tissue liberally to clear it out. Also try again on a subsequent day or week to be sure it’s not a fluke day for the nose. Good luck!
Oooh. Good point. Something for me to keep in mind.
Good idea, I’ll give it a few more tries!
I was going to mention the “fluke nose” possibility. My nose fluctuates wildly, and I know it’s me and not my bottles.
Oh yes. I didn’t see this before I replied below.
RIP — and I better check my Infusion! I almost never wear it anymore since I got the Absolue.
If I do end up replacing it (after spraying several more times, per nozknoz’s suggestion!), I’ll probably go with the Absolue!
Keep in mind, though, that sometimes it’s only the first few spritzes – the stuff that got stuck in the sprayer tube and was exposed to air – that have really gone off. At least a couple of times I’ve pulled a beloved bottle out and gasped in horror at what came out of the nozzle… and then later found out that it was just fine.
I mean, sometimes things DO go off. But try clearing out the tube with several spritzes onto disposable tissues before you toss the entire bottle.
Fingers crossed this is the case!
SOTD is Chanel 19 EDP – no skank whatsoever, but spine strength in spades … which I will need for today’s challenges.
Hope today goes smoother than you anticipate. You smell great!
Thanks lillyjo – I hope so too!
Lovely!
Stay strong!
Hope that your day went well!
SotD is Nankun, by Sultan Pasha Attars.
Nothing skanky here. Lots of spices, something pine-y green, and a bucket load of gorgeous sandalwood.
Inspired by the Shoyeido incense of the same name.
Mmmmmmmmmmm
You smell great!
Thank you! 🙂
Its one of my favourite incense/woody scents!
Ooh, that sounds nice.
Day is almost done and I just ‘changed into’ what some folks consider skank:
Montecristo, by Masque
From a sample.
First time wearing this.
Woa!!!
Very niiice 🙂
Day off today. I was craving a bit of powder, so still no skank for me. Sotd is Miss Dior Le Parfum.
I’ve been trying to think of the skankiest perfumes in my collection and vintage Miss Dior definitely takes the crown. It’s way too much dirty panty for me (which, if I’m not mistaken, was actually the brief for this perfume – uh, no pun intended) which I’m sure vanished from Miss Dior and variations thereof decades ago.
Yeah, no dirty panties in Le Parfum, but I find it kinda quietly sexy.
Last night I searched through my disorganised sample box for potential skanky ones and found Isabey Gardenia which I am trying this morning. I thought maybe like other white florals it might be skanky (and it does have musk) but it’s not–it’s just a beautiful light floral. But I’ve got more samples to go through in search of skank.
That one was pretty! (Have not smelled a recent version.)
No skank here. Testing Vilhelm Basilico and Fellini. A trace of herbs, some fig, and some vetiver in the drydown. Pleasant enough but not super exciting.
Ah, was wondering about that one.
It’s interesting. After 8 hours, if I really sniff my arm closely, I’m still getting an herbal fig – which is pretty good longevity for me. Not sure it’s different enough from my other figs- hoped for more basil.
Plus they already have a fig, so seems pointless if there’s no basil?
Second day in a row for the non-skanky, work friendly Jo Malone Blackberry and Bay. I really enjoy the drydown of this one.
I love that scent!!
The juxtaposition of the sweet berry followed by the almost-sour bay makes me SO happy.
I’ve discovered that is one of my favorite types of fragrances–
Sweetly Sour.
Who knew?
In Le Labo’s Rose 31 shower gel and lotion. After investing in the edp, I’ve decided that the perfume is too much skank for me (the cumin makes me want to peel off my own skin about an hour in). It’s a much more civilized affair with just the body products and enough scent for me.
The only form in which I care for Rose 31 is the hard soaps, which are wonderful and creamy and only lightly (gorgeously) scented. Even the shower gel/lotion are a bit much for me. I didn’t realize it was cuminy!
I’ve gone through over 100 of the little soaps. I have a friend who works in a hotel where Rose 31 bath products are stocked in the bathrooms!
Ahhhhhhhhh so jealous. Well. If you ever get a stack, I know someone who would swap for them! (Meeeeee. I would. Meeeeee.)
A friend of mine recently stayed at a Fairmont not far from me, and then stayed with me for a couple nights. “Hey,” I asked, “what toiletries did they carry?” “Something awful and strongly perfumed,” she said. “Rose…some number?” “IT’S ROSE 31,” I yelled excitedly. “DID YOU BRING ME ANY HARD SOAPS?!?!” But she hadn’t. I’ve been heart-broken ever since.
Ha! Someone gave me their Rose 31 conditioners and I have to say it doesn’t really smell like the perfume. My hair just smelled like a high dose of a screechy woody amber without any of the other notes. I eould rather have sprayed the perfume in my hair.
See, I think a lot of fragrances are great when dissipated in the mist of a shower. Smart way to enjoy the fragrances without being overwhelmed!
Hiris today! I love skank, but just haven’t wanted to wear any skanky perfumes this week. So I’ve been wearing “darn it, I just love you” perfumes.
Darn it, I just love Hiris too. We should start a club. 🙂 You smell fab.
I’ll join.
“Darn it, I just love you” would be a great community project.
SOTD Lush Death and Decay. Not sure if over-ripe lilies count as skank. I really like this one but tend to forget about this little solid tin in my drawer. Will remember it for next week’s project, too.
RIP Hef. I never gave him much thought but his history is interesting. I didn’t know about his civil rights activism and he did make history by starting Playboy in the squeaky clean 50s. Negative reactions may have also contributed to the start of the women’s movement. I have mixed feelings about whether he encouraged objectification or sexual liberation with regards to women.
I was just talking to someone about my own mixed feelings.
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/may/26/gloria-steinem-bunny-tale-still-relevant-today
You might find this interesting and the original Gloria Steinem Bunny Tales. Death and Decay is good, isn’t it? Well, I like it!
Thanks, I’ve read about The Bunny Tales but haven’t read it. I’ll put it on the list!
I do like Death and Decay. It’s smells ripe but not rotten to me. But it also smells golden and warm, and a little like soap. Some lily-centric perfumes overwhelm me the way a wedding hall or funeral home full of fresh lilies does. This doesn’t do that.
Don’t want to debate HH, especially when he just died, but there was a funny tweet this morning about America’s dirty old uncle passing away. Made me giggle.
That’s giggle-worthy ????
Trying Misia EDP for the first time and comparing to the EDT…
The EDP is a bit flatter to my nose. The EDT is stronger and fuller.
Reformulation is, in general, the stuff of nightmares! ????
Yes it is!
Ahh, I never did a side-by-side comparison. Wearing the EdP on its own, I didn’t detect any changes and found it just as gorgeous as the original. But you’ve made me feel better about hoarding the EdT 😉
I have Misia and 1932 EDTs. The Misia EDP is beautiful but less sweet violet and much more iris. Makes me curious what the 1932 EDP is like compared to Misia EDP…haven’t tried 1932 EDP yet. So much to try…so little time!
After wearing both for a while longer, the EDT is focused on violet. The EDP has some violet but lots more iris. It actually smells quite a bit like 1932 EDT to me. I would have to do a side by side but there is quite a bit of iris going on in the EDP.
The EDT is sweeter and has hints of rose which I don’t detect in the EDP.
Sometimes I have to remember in meetings not to compulsively sniff my forearms as that may appear strange to others…but when one smells this good, how can one not? ????
This was my impression too. I prefer Misia in edt.
The rather un-skanky Diptyque l’Ombre Dans l’Eau! This entire week has been full of swapmeet treasures. It’s very beautiful, but not at all what I remember from trying it in the shop. My scent memory is abysmal.
House twins! And you smell great. I’m wearing a spritz of 34 boulevard Saint-Germain.
My scent memory can feel lousy too. This morning I had to check my sotd logs to remember what I wore last night. Morning brain fog is the worst. 😉
Or you tried a different concentration?
Also adding that I think Diptyque has toned down the sharpness of the opening over the years.
Oooh. Mine is in the older rectangular bottle and not the oval one, so that might be part of it!
The edt and edp concentrations are quite different.
Interesting point! I don’t actually know which one mine is, or which one I smelled.
Now, in the drydown, it smells more like what I recall, which would make sense.
Opardu from a decant. It’s a skin scent on me so I’ll spray throughout the day.
You smell lovely! If it lasted longer, it would be mine. I just can’t justify the price with it’s poor longevity.
Thank you!! Took 5 sprays for me today. I wonder if this is at discounters? I’ve not checked.
I don’t think it will ever be. I love me some Opardu
🙂
Oops.
I’m in Le Feu d’Issey, from the swap meet. Aaack, I smell like rotten fruit. We’re going out for Chinese food for lunch, so hopefully the moo goo gai pan will drown it out.
I looked it up on NST, and one of the first articles was “5 Perfumes for the Privacy of your Own Home”, so I should have researched it first!
Actually, it smells more earthy/gingerish now. It might be okay after all, and fun to follow the progression. I’m relieved.
Is there such a thing as fruit skank? ????
Uh-oh. I think I have a couple of samples of that. *checks sample list* Yep, that’s the one. Well, maybe I’ll follow your lead and wear it to work (waitress) and let food scents mingle with the initial notes. Thanks for the warning!
Just try not to serve any fruit salad.
Ha!
I used to love Feu and wore it all the time. I always thought it smelled of bamboo shoots. I finished my last bottle quite recently , boo hoo.
Fascinating. It was a horrible, intense cinnamon flame headache on me. No rotten fruit at all.
Oh, I think you smell great!
And to my mind, there is absolutely fruit skank.
You’re braver than I am. I couldn’t wear it beyond the first try, in the house. I think funk and skank are un the dame category. Plant-based skank twins today!
Ya know, even when things don’t work, I still get a vaguely perverse kick out of them. This hobby is never boring. I discovered fruit skank first hand today!
Oh yes! Angel smells like rotting melons, Galop has a skanky quince note, there definitely is such a thing as fruit skank.
Reading this made me realize Shalimar has a skanky bergamot note.
The most lovely bergamot skank note in the entire universe.
Whaaaaat? Galop has zero skank in it for me. And Angel smells horrifically but not of rotting melons. Maybe I have few skank receptors?
Oh wait, I might be thinking of Alien.
Skank in Galop? Hmm, will have to pay more attention next time. Never detected skank in it.
Angel is the instant headache for me. It’s just too much.
Yes, fruit skank is a thing. I can’t remember what it was that I sniffed that had it (or maybe I don’t want to remember).
Running around with little sleep trying to meet a deadline, so i just Spritzed Jo Malone English Oak & Hazelnut a couple times on my way out. I am enjoying this as a nice office scent and will probably empty a sample vial or two – the lack of longevity helps 😉 – but I could have used something more spine-strengthening like Chanel No 19.
Chanel No.19 today and likely tomorrow as well.
Nothing yet today, but I may wear some Coco Chanel tomorrow in anticipation of the cooler weather here in the NE. 🙂
ETA: shoulda kept reading post header – just realized tomorrow is Skanker Friday! Can’t wear any Chanel now, can I? heehee
I’m wearing MAAI this morning. There is a review on Fragrantica that likens MAAI to “an animal rubbing itself all over you, whilst urinating. In a good way.” I cracked up laughing, firstly because if you’re not a perfume nut, having an animal urinate on you is probably never good, and secondly because I don’t get that aspect of MAAI at all. I get the furry musks, civet, and flowers, all blended in a way that smells really pretty to me.
MAAI was all skank on me!
I think the review on Fragrantica was right on point for what it was like on my skin
it is something.
scent twins!
MAAI’s a good one! I don’t get skank either, but I think I have a very high tolerance for what others call “skank.” I can’t think of one perfume that I’ve tried that brought to mind images of stinky unwashed bodies or offal. Maybe I need to do more sniffing ????
MAAI was very weird on me. I mean, very very VERY weird.
I was expecting the tuberose panther thing, and instead I got the bathroom sink in my older cousin’s house, ca. 1974. He was a mechanic, so very often you could get whiffs of engine oil, grease, hydraulic fluid, and just plain dirt, from the clothes in the bathroom hamper. But also, and this is the significant part, his wife kept a bar of coal* tar soap at the sink for him to clean his hands with. It was a very medicinal, harsh-smelling soap, pretty fascinating. And MAAI had this weird clean-dirty double angle on me that had nothing whatsoever to do with fur or flowers. It was all dirt plus soap.
*No, I don’t mean pine tar soap.
You smell awesome!!!
I woke up fairly early today thinking my dentist appointment was today but they did the confirmation call saying it was tomorrow. Good thing they called instead of an hour’s drive to Cleveland to find that out. Today I will wear vintage Bal. Vintage Bal isn’t for the dentist’s chair. Shalimar will be tomorrow’s skank.
Thursday!
RIP Hugh Hefner. Problematic, to be sure, but also a publisher of some of the best essays and interviews of the latter half of 20th century.
1) In Epidor, and this will definitely be a bday gift to myself next year. This scent is joyful. Sorry, no skank- the last hot day before a week or cooler temps and rain!
2) Ugh, I think my lavender plants are mostly dead. Fortunately they were cheap, and so out the dead one go and in with newer, healthier plants. Will also put in some other overwintering herbs, like thyme and rosemary.
I left my lavender plant out all winter and was ready to toss out what I thought was a dead plant in the spring, but it came back to life and even flowered this summer!
Then we went away for 10 days and it wasn’t watered and has been dead dead ever since ????
I’m wearing Bas de Soie today and in some ways it makes me think of a powdery version of Cristalle. It starts green and bitter but then it goes all Sarah Moon. I don’t have No.19 so can’t compare it, but definitely iris.
Alex is home and the house is full of depressingly ugly but essential ‘invalid’ equipment, all in tones of grey or flesh pink or hospital green. We will only need these things for a few months before they are returned to the hospital but I wonder why the Philippe Starcks and Marc Newsons of this world don’t take on the challenge of designing shower stools, toilet frames, walking frames, pee bottles etc. It would be so cool ( and good for morale ) if practical didn’t have to be so hideous.
Congratulations on the homecoming!
Agree, practical and attractive should come together more often.
Glad to hear Alex is home, that in itself should make him feel better.
Good point on the institutional stuff looking… institutional and depressing. So many hospitals are the same way, just awful. Then there are some that are more modern and not as bad. Then there’s the one I took my stepson to 5+ years ago that felt and looked like a modern boutique hotel. Proof that it can be done! And depressing that medical supplies are still so gross. Maybe Target needs to get in on it.
You smell lovely! And I agree about the grimness of medical appliances. I think they just haven’t tried, but someone really should. It’s depressing enough already to be sick.
Crumbs. I’ve been away so long I didn’t hear what happened to your husband. I really really hope that he will heal swiftly and his spirits are up. I totally agree about hospital gear. When my son was hospitalized for long periods, I always brought our own sheets (crisp cotton sheets are soul-lifters) and blankets for him, so his bed was a riot of color. I put up pictures on the walls as well, and no one seemed to mind. The saddest bit of gear was his wheelchair, which was downright scary looking. Black and knobby and clacky–I’d toss Kenyan kangas over it when we went out. Fight the dinginess with color!
There was a time when baby gear was horribly ugly or twee and then suddenly it got funked up and cots etc. became far more design conscious (and probably expensive) . I guess ill people , old people and physically challenged people are less visible in that respect. Wheelchairs could easily be powder coated with funky upholstery, and coffee cup holders etc. Good on you for cheering up your son’s room at the hospital. I bet it made a huge difference.
Hurrah for Alex getting out of the hospital and being at home!
Glad to hear he is back home. Wishing a speedy recovery.
Glad to hear he’s home now. Yes, grim, indeed, but hopefully very temporary. Perhaps a glitter pen or other craft supplies are in your future…
Glad that hubbie is well enough to go home. If we can bring Michael Graves back from the dead, he would be the absolute perfect designer to make functional medical equipment. He collaborated with Target many years ago. I have a 3-Tier mesh drying rack that accordions flat when not in use. I’m all thumbs when it comes to anything mechanical and I’ve managed to smash my fingers only twice, a sign that it was designed well.
I’m wearing vintage Fendi EDT. It is glorious! Will glam up my trip to get a flu shot later.
Divine. I was at a restaurant a couple of years ago and a woman at a table nearby was wafting it all over the place. It stopped me dead in my tracks. I figured she had to be one of us, since nothing else smells like vintage Fendi.
Did you do the perfumista eyelock? 😉
SOTD is MFK “Absolue pour le Soir”. I’m skanky, honey. ;^*
Good one ????
Kanuka, I thought of you and your husband just now when upon seeing a video showing U.S. Representative Steve Scalise returning to the House of Representatives. He walked in, using a cane in each hand, and looked well otherwise. He was shot through the pelvis from one side of the body to the other 15 weeks ago. Articles say he is returning to work while continuing outpatient rehabilitation, so there is hope further improvement, too. I know your husband has long road ahead of him, but it is amazing what is possible these days.
That’s impressive, isn’t it?
It’s really is. Hang in there (I’m sure you will)!
Best of all good things to you, NST. I’m proving hopeless in skank week–I think I used up my inspiration (Beloved) two weeks early, or some silly thing. I want something gorgeously dry and sophisticated today, although skank could be that too, I suppose. No matter. I am contentedly wearing La Pausa, and honestly, I have to say this-I smell wonderful for the day that awaits me. WONDERFUL. I hope the day gives me due appreciation.
The kittens are being very sweet to me in the dear man’s absence. They are in full riot mode, but every now and again, Titus brings me his pink clothes peg so I can throw it and he can fetch it. He seems to like me to be involved. Eric tires sooner than the Brown Bros, and he is now in a small purring heap on my lap. He is now over five months old, but his point colour is very slow coming in. He has recently produced very pale apricot smudges under his eyes, but his mask consists mainly of this one dark apricot patch between his eyebrows, and he looks all the time as though he’s frowning in concentration. His paws have developed unconnected, random smudges of barely discernible apricot. His tail has the most consistent colour: kind of red, but actually (I think) closer to apricot. I think he might be a cream point (it is genetically possible) but the dear man says red point. Eric isn’t saying anything.
Be well, all. Oh, and if you haven’t tried La Pausa, please put it on your To Do list to do so. I’m sure you’d appreciate it, even if you don’t love it.
How adorable to have such kitten suspense! Fully endorse La Pausa, too.
Eric sounds absolutely adorable! How long will it take for his markings to show up?
We were looking at pictures of our now 5 yo kitties from when they were 3 months old. My hairless’ calico spots have lightened and her seal point furry brother has darkened a lot. Your wee ones sound like a load of (exhausting) fun!
It was so humid last night that I couldn’t sleep. Needless to say, my concentration is not optimal today. I couldn’t stand the thought of skank this morning so I chose Calypso. It is easy and pretty. This is supposed to be our last humid day.
Hope your humidity clears out so you can get a good night’s rest!
You smell pretty, indeed! I gave the cap of my bottle a good sniff this morning and contemplated wearing it but decided it was still a tad too warm out.
The humidity of the past few weeks finally broke and it cooled off this afternoon. I came home and put on a big spritz go Sideris to celebrate. Yay, for great sleeping weather!
I’m wearing Zoologist Civet today. It’s not really *skanky* on me, per se. The civet comes through more as a leathery/smoky undertone. It’s good stuff.
Soleil de Jeddah. Skunk should be arriving in about 4 hours in the drydown 🙂
Heh heh.
Have I mentioned to you how much I love EB Genre, btw? *swoon* I was planning to wear it tomorrow but I seem to have come down with a cold, so we’ll see. (I don’t find it particularly skanky, but it seems on-theme.)
Genre was a winner for me. Sorry to hear about the cold – half of my office friends are sick 🙁
And half of my household is, so it was only a matter of time.
SoLN = Jardins de Bagatelle
SotD(r) = Eau des Merveilles
SotD(l) = 34 boulevard Saint Germain
The JdB I wore last night gently lingers, so it took a moment to decide what to add.
So, Eau des Merveilles on the right arm because I missed it, and 34bSG on the left because I thought it might be a bit skanky. Not sure about that, but it does have a bit of rotten funk that smells fantastic.
Friday here already, but I’ll be saving the skank for the evening, I’ve got a physio appointment this morning. I think Ninfeo Mio shouldn’t be too overwhelming.
Layered Angélique on top of 1001 Ouds. Surprisingly it works!
I’ve been searching all morning for the funk in Dzing! but cannot find it. Cardboard and an occasional zing of something tangy, but skank-free for me.
I am *this close* to snapping up a 30 ml bottle of Black Perfecto, because bottle. And the stuff inside. Has anyone worn it? Thoughts?
It’s very good, buy it!
Where are you finding it? I cannot find it anywhere!!
I would love to know, as well!
Amazon has 3 bottles, 1.6 oz, $125 plus $13 shipping.
The seller is WOTIKA. They are based in Spain but their rating is pretty bad. Also, not eligible for Prime.
I have the 30ml bottle and realky enjoy wearinging it. In fact I wore it Wed (Tuesaday blog time). It starts off like a chewy rosy macaron and progresses through the day as a slightly suedy rose. In fact we had ti walk across to an all staff meeting later that morning and while sitting there I had a ‘Who smells so good?’ moment and realised it was meeeeeeeeee 🙂
BUY it!
A)That bottle!,
B)That bottle!
C)My favorite incarnation of LPRN.The cherries are even blacker than ever before.
LoveLove
Buy, but use Shopfranceinc because 15 mLs! I am decanting from my 100 mL bottle to fulfill swaps.
Zero on the skank scale here in Prada’s Infusion d’Iris. First of all, it is too hot for skank in my neck of the woods today–and I had an IEP meeting at my son’s school and chose not to kill anyone with civet or castoreum. But also, I have finally resupplied myself with my favorite shampoo and conditioner, which smell like powdery iris AND are really great products for my thick, curly, dry hair. I love the scent of my hair and was hoping to amplify it with the Prada. The Prada is nice, but not as fab as my hair scent this AM–No.4 l’eau de Mare.
Do tell what are the hair products you are using. Other curly gals need to know – I have been using DevaCurl which smells like lemon pledge mixed with cheap rose oil. Not a good hair fragrance (or any fragrance for the matter of fact)
Yah. I don’t like the Deva scent either. So, I just use the Hydrating shampoo and conditioner (called “Condition” for this product). If you try it, let me know what you think!
Back from a business trip.
I wore Prada Infusion d’Homme these 2 days when I was away. I couldn’t overdo a fragrance at an exhibition, so Prada felt elegant and sophisticated and tactful at the same time
That Prada is on my “ought to try” list.
For what is surely our last day of nice weather this year I’m wearing Soivohle Honeysuckle Bird. Lovely and sweet.
Inspired by Bear’s SOTD yesterday and Tuesday, I have hopped on the skank wagon. SOTD = vintage Rochas Femme, from the sample stash. At first, all I smelled was a beautiful, spicy oriental perfume, and I wondered if my sniffer was out of whack. Then 5 to 10 minutes later, Hello Skanky! I like it, though.
Last night I had one of THOSE phone calls… the “Good News, Bad News” ones. My brother called to tell me that he had been in an accident that totalled his 3/4 ton work truck. And that the other vehicle involved was a big rig. The good news was that he walked away with bumps and bruises. He is seeing a doctor today to get checked out.
Wooah! Sorry to hear that but glad he seems to be ok. *hugs*
Wow, happy to hear your brother is ok! Thank god he was in a 3/4 ton truck, otherwise…!
Glad he is ok!
So glad to know that your brother is okay! Also, you smell great!
Glad your brother is okay, Jalapeno.
And you smell fantastic !!!
😀
And now I have an idea of how great you smelled the other day. 😀
So glad he is ok!
Thanks everyone! I have to admit that I poured myself a nice stiff drink when my brother was telling me the details of the accident. We both know that he was very lucky the other day.
Eeek! Glad he’s OK! What a scare!
Yeah. I was wondering how well I was going to sleep after that conversation. But he sounded pretty good all things considered.
I am sorry about his accident and glad that nothing happened io him.
Skanky Lush Lust.
All the boys come out to play when I wear this one.Lolllll!
Lol! I already know I can’t wear Lust, but you just made me want to give it another try.
Ah! Trying to decide between Jicky or a skanky jasmine for tomorrow.
*Waves to Robin and sniffs appreciatively*
Friday here and I have a high pole of stuff to get through today at work. I just need everyone to stay away and let me crank through it. This may or may not have influenced my choice of SOTD: ELDO’s Rien. Anyway as it is the Friday before a long weekend lots of people will probably take today off so I may get my wish LOL.
Ha, very good luck!
Went commando most of the day — preschool open house tonight so I was going to pick something completely skank-free, but I have a hankering for Dryad. It’s not terribly skanky on me, but as I think I’ve mentioned before, the drydown makes me think of clean kitten fur. Skank level is a cute little *meow* rather than a “RAWHHHR!* 🙂
Sounds right for preschool open house!
SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP
People, my 100 mL bottle will be depleted this year. I think I’ve been using this bottle for the past 2.5 years (I don’t think I could have managed this in 1.5 so 2.5 is my best guess). I have enough back ups to keep me marinated for many many years!
Good thing you have backups of No. 19! If it isn’t your work, it’s your commute that is calling for it. 😉
🙂 you are absolutely right!
Hi hajusuuri, Do you like the edt too? Do you think there is a big difference between the edt and edp? I’ve only smelled the edt and Poudre versions. I’m thinking of blind buying the edp because I like the other 2 so much.
I like, own and wear all possible versions of No 19 and so far I haven’t come across any I didn’t like (well, I do not count Poudre as a version of No 19 but it’s OK too). But EdT is still my #1 (I like it more than even the extrait).
If you like EdT, I don’t see how you might not like the EdP but it won’t necessarily be better for you. Why do you want to buy it blindly? Aren’t there any perfumes that you tried already and liked but haven’t bought yet?
Hi Undina, I was going to buy the edp blindly because it gets so much love and I can’t find anywhere to try it. I live near the Chanel boutique in South Coast plaza California and they don’t even carry it or have a tester. Since you like the edt the best I think I’ll hold off for now. Thank you for your answer. Yes I want to buy and try so many other perfumes. Spot on.????
I find the EDT more floral and wispy whereas the EDP is greener, has more body and you definitely smell the earthy Iris. If you are in the U.S., I would love to send you a decant to try it for yourself! Click on my username to get my email address. Hope to hear from you – I enjoy spreading the love for the EDP.
Nothing to do with perfumes, but at work, whenever someone talks about a memorable experience (including eating, exercising) or a book they’ve read or listened to, invariably, one of us would ask “Was it life-changing?” Well, I want a person trying No.19 EDP for the first time to answer Yes! to that question 🙂
Thanks hajusuuri! I sent you an email.????
