Thursday scent of the day 9/28

Posted by Robin on 28 September 2017 289 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday, and happy Strawberry Cream Pie Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm at about a 7 or an 8 on the skank scale, in Robert Piguet Bandit. I stole the idea from Lillibet, yesterday.

Reminder: 9/29 will be Skank Friday! Wear something skanky. If you need help, try here or here. Suggested by Dawn and Ihadanidea.

The definition of skanky, from A Perfumista Lexicon: a fragrance with animalic or other “sexy” notes. Skanky has pejorative connotations in “regular” slang, but among many perfumistas, it is meant as a compliment. The use of the term to apply to perfume was popularized by March at Perfume Posse.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I needed to meet people and use public transport today, so I decided to choose something not skanky. SOTD is Bois Farine.

very soft if I remember it right. When I ride public transit I wear loud stuff in hopes that the crazy will sit elsewhere. I have been stuck in some very bad seating at times. Hopefully your is more civilized 🙂

Soft, but I would not call it a skin scent. Projection seems to be enough to be noticed by a person next to you.
As for loud stuff, I had the same thought Ede97005 had: some crazy people may actually be attracted by loud perfumes. 🙂 Actually, I got a nearly empty bus on my ride to the destination and a half-empty one on my way back, so fortunately I did not need a scent to scare people away. 😀

        From the website :
        Bright green tea
        & Japanese yuzu
This surprising blend, with its evocative name, is based on a fine green tea.
It boasts the pleasantly round acidity of citrus fruit, the aromatic richness and peppery notes of mild spices, plus the rind of real Japanese Yuzu (halfway between lemon and mandarin orange).

That sounds like a nice tea, I had a cup of Kusmi’s BB Detox when I came home, it sounds similar, but with grapefruit instead of yuzu.
I love Songes in autumn and winter, it really shines in cooler weather.

Happy Almost Friday Day!! SOTD is Smell Bent Gypsy because it’s just so easy and pretty, but not boring.

Getting the BAV cleaned and washed to prepare for hitting the road again, looking forward to it! Finger printed for the millionth time this morning. You would think there would be a nationwide register for this kind of thing. Totally inefficient systems at work once again…

$65 bucks every time for me because it goes to FBI for background check. I’m not complaining about the cost because I get reimbursed. BUT, it doesn’t seem to make sense to do this with every license application because it’s going to the SAME federal agency. They are probably so sick of Deva at this point????

It sounds like they could be more organized about the licensing. They need a better system. Of course, it’s probably about the money too.

You should try the discounters first. I looked at the Zulily prices and compared them to Fragrancenet (no affiliation) and there was a definite difference in price. The problem with Fragrancenet is that the discount changes. Today it is 30%. I’ve always been satisfied with their product.

is it skanky? I don’t really think so, but it is powerful, maybe more pimpy than skanky.

Well, I think that’s probably open to interpretation. Urban dictionary describes it as “something that is pimped out or done extremely well with more bells, whistles and bling than it possibly should have.”
My first pimpy perfumes that came to mind were Obsession and Casmir. Both big and kind of over the top, but I love them anyway!

Azuree is nice(my decant went AWOL). I think you’re spot on with the smell colors. I don’t find it skanky at all. I think it’s a pretty sophisticated and elegant leather (so high-end escort service, maybe?).

After a big thunderstorm yesterday evening, the temperature has dropped from 30C to 12C overnight. We are now back to our regularly scheduled fall weather after 16 days of record-breaking dry heat. Just in time for skank Friday!

I am celebrating with Salome. Enjoy, Perfume Grinch!

SOTD is Le Labo Rose 31 in all its cumin-y glory. Some days this is tame and some days the cumin just comes out and makes it skanky. I did my usual two big sprays but in honor of skank week, I may just do one or two more. Working at home has its advantages. ????

I think a combination of things may be happening: you both may have a higher tolerance to cumin and/or Le Labo’s batch variations have come into play. How can a perfume remain consistent from one bottle to the next if they’re all bottled in different places, by difference people, by hand?

I’m kind of convinced that body chemistry plays a big role here. Some skin will amplify skanky notes; some will tone it way down.

I think dry or clean skin amps it up on me. Stuff that can smell sweaty smells less sweaty when it’s not on freshly showered skin. Or was it the other way around?

I’m in Parfum de Therese today!

And I’m realizing a few of my bottles have gone off. 🙁 Prada Infusion d’Iris smelled like vinegar (so glad I tested it on a tissue first!) and L’Ambre des Merveilles smelled odd, too. They are about 5 years old. Might replace L’Ambre des Merveilles with a 15ml, I can’t imagine not having some!

They go bad faster when there’s a lot of air in the bottle. When something gets to that point, best to finish it quickly!

I wonder why that is? Do small bottles have less effective caps? Are we more likely to travel with the small bottles, therefore exposing them to more temp and light?

If I had to guess, it’s due to less aeration. Smaller bottle, less air to oxygenate and break down the juice.

Oh – yes! lol. I thought that’s what people were saying, and in my head I was thinking about minis, which do tend to last forever. People really find large bottles to preserve better than smaller ones? I’m surprised by that.

If you haven’t used a perfume for a while, the problem might be just the dried perfume in the sprayer. I would spray a tissue liberally to clear it out. Also try again on a subsequent day or week to be sure it’s not a fluke day for the nose. Good luck!

Keep in mind, though, that sometimes it’s only the first few spritzes – the stuff that got stuck in the sprayer tube and was exposed to air – that have really gone off. At least a couple of times I’ve pulled a beloved bottle out and gasped in horror at what came out of the nozzle… and then later found out that it was just fine.

I mean, sometimes things DO go off. But try clearing out the tube with several spritzes onto disposable tissues before you toss the entire bottle.

I’ve been trying to think of the skankiest perfumes in my collection and vintage Miss Dior definitely takes the crown. It’s way too much dirty panty for me (which, if I’m not mistaken, was actually the brief for this perfume – uh, no pun intended) which I’m sure vanished from Miss Dior and variations thereof decades ago.

I thought maybe like other white florals it might be skanky (and it does have musk) but it’s not–it’s just a beautiful light floral. But I’ve got more samples to go through in search of skank.

In Le Labo’s Rose 31 shower gel and lotion. After investing in the edp, I’ve decided that the perfume is too much skank for me (the cumin makes me want to peel off my own skin about an hour in). It’s a much more civilized affair with just the body products and enough scent for me.

A friend of mine recently stayed at a Fairmont not far from me, and then stayed with me for a couple nights. “Hey,” I asked, “what toiletries did they carry?” “Something awful and strongly perfumed,” she said. “Rose…some number?” “IT’S ROSE 31,” I yelled excitedly. “DID YOU BRING ME ANY HARD SOAPS?!?!” But she hadn’t. I’ve been heart-broken ever since.

SOTD Lush Death and Decay. Not sure if over-ripe lilies count as skank. I really like this one but tend to forget about this little solid tin in my drawer. Will remember it for next week’s project, too.
RIP Hef. I never gave him much thought but his history is interesting. I didn’t know about his civil rights activism and he did make history by starting Playboy in the squeaky clean 50s. Negative reactions may have also contributed to the start of the women’s movement. I have mixed feelings about whether he encouraged objectification or sexual liberation with regards to women.

I do like Death and Decay. It’s smells ripe but not rotten to me. But it also smells golden and warm, and a little like soap. Some lily-centric perfumes overwhelm me the way a wedding hall or funeral home full of fresh lilies does. This doesn’t do that.

I have Misia and 1932 EDTs. The Misia EDP is beautiful but less sweet violet and much more iris. Makes me curious what the 1932 EDP is like compared to Misia EDP…haven’t tried 1932 EDP yet. So much to try…so little time!

After wearing both for a while longer, the EDT is focused on violet. The EDP has some violet but lots more iris. It actually smells quite a bit like 1932 EDT to me. I would have to do a side by side but there is quite a bit of iris going on in the EDP.

The EDT is sweeter and has hints of rose which I don’t detect in the EDP.

Sometimes I have to remember in meetings not to compulsively sniff my forearms as that may appear strange to others…but when one smells this good, how can one not? ????

    Oops.
I’m in Le Feu d’Issey, from the swap meet. Aaack, I smell like rotten fruit. We’re going out for Chinese food for lunch, so hopefully the moo goo gai pan will drown it out.
I looked it up on NST, and one of the first articles was “5 Perfumes for the Privacy of your Own Home”, so I should have researched it first!
Actually, it smells more earthy/gingerish now. It might be okay after all, and fun to follow the progression. I’m relieved.

Is there such a thing as fruit skank? ????

Uh-oh. I think I have a couple of samples of that. *checks sample list* Yep, that’s the one. Well, maybe I’ll follow your lead and wear it to work (waitress) and let food scents mingle with the initial notes. Thanks for the warning!

Running around with little sleep trying to meet a deadline, so i just Spritzed Jo Malone English Oak & Hazelnut a couple times on my way out. I am enjoying this as a nice office scent and will probably empty a sample vial or two – the lack of longevity helps 😉 – but I could have used something more spine-strengthening like Chanel No 19.

I’m wearing MAAI this morning. There is a review on Fragrantica that likens MAAI to “an animal rubbing itself all over you, whilst urinating. In a good way.” I cracked up laughing, firstly because if you’re not a perfume nut, having an animal urinate on you is probably never good, and secondly because I don’t get that aspect of MAAI at all. I get the furry musks, civet, and flowers, all blended in a way that smells really pretty to me.

MAAI’s a good one! I don’t get skank either, but I think I have a very high tolerance for what others call “skank.” I can’t think of one perfume that I’ve tried that brought to mind images of stinky unwashed bodies or offal. Maybe I need to do more sniffing ????

MAAI was very weird on me. I mean, very very VERY weird.

I was expecting the tuberose panther thing, and instead I got the bathroom sink in my older cousin’s house, ca. 1974. He was a mechanic, so very often you could get whiffs of engine oil, grease, hydraulic fluid, and just plain dirt, from the clothes in the bathroom hamper. But also, and this is the significant part, his wife kept a bar of coal* tar soap at the sink for him to clean his hands with. It was a very medicinal, harsh-smelling soap, pretty fascinating. And MAAI had this weird clean-dirty double angle on me that had nothing whatsoever to do with fur or flowers. It was all dirt plus soap.

*No, I don’t mean pine tar soap.

    Thursday!

RIP Hugh Hefner. Problematic, to be sure, but also a publisher of some of the best essays and interviews of the latter half of 20th century.

    1) In Epidor, and this will definitely be a bday gift to myself next year. This scent is joyful. Sorry, no skank- the last hot day before a week or cooler temps and rain!

    2) Ugh, I think my lavender plants are mostly dead. Fortunately they were cheap, and so out the dead one go and in with newer, healthier plants. Will also put in some other overwintering herbs, like thyme and rosemary.

I’m wearing Bas de Soie today and in some ways it makes me think of a powdery version of Cristalle. It starts green and bitter but then it goes all Sarah Moon. I don’t have No.19 so can’t compare it, but definitely iris.
Alex is home and the house is full of depressingly ugly but essential ‘invalid’ equipment, all in tones of grey or flesh pink or hospital green. We will only need these things for a few months before they are returned to the hospital but I wonder why the Philippe Starcks and Marc Newsons of this world don’t take on the challenge of designing shower stools, toilet frames, walking frames, pee bottles etc. It would be so cool ( and good for morale ) if practical didn’t have to be so hideous.

Good point on the institutional stuff looking… institutional and depressing. So many hospitals are the same way, just awful. Then there are some that are more modern and not as bad. Then there’s the one I took my stepson to 5+ years ago that felt and looked like a modern boutique hotel. Proof that it can be done! And depressing that medical supplies are still so gross. Maybe Target needs to get in on it.

Crumbs. I’ve been away so long I didn’t hear what happened to your husband. I really really hope that he will heal swiftly and his spirits are up. I totally agree about hospital gear. When my son was hospitalized for long periods, I always brought our own sheets (crisp cotton sheets are soul-lifters) and blankets for him, so his bed was a riot of color. I put up pictures on the walls as well, and no one seemed to mind. The saddest bit of gear was his wheelchair, which was downright scary looking. Black and knobby and clacky–I’d toss Kenyan kangas over it when we went out. Fight the dinginess with color!

There was a time when baby gear was horribly ugly or twee and then suddenly it got funked up and cots etc. became far more design conscious (and probably expensive) . I guess ill people , old people and physically challenged people are less visible in that respect. Wheelchairs could easily be powder coated with funky upholstery, and coffee cup holders etc. Good on you for cheering up your son’s room at the hospital. I bet it made a huge difference.

Glad that hubbie is well enough to go home. If we can bring Michael Graves back from the dead, he would be the absolute perfect designer to make functional medical equipment. He collaborated with Target many years ago. I have a 3-Tier mesh drying rack that accordions flat when not in use. I’m all thumbs when it comes to anything mechanical and I’ve managed to smash my fingers only twice, a sign that it was designed well.

Kanuka, I thought of you and your husband just now when upon seeing a video showing U.S. Representative Steve Scalise returning to the House of Representatives. He walked in, using a cane in each hand, and looked well otherwise. He was shot through the pelvis from one side of the body to the other 15 weeks ago. Articles say he is returning to work while continuing outpatient rehabilitation, so there is hope further improvement, too. I know your husband has long road ahead of him, but it is amazing what is possible these days.

Best of all good things to you, NST. I’m proving hopeless in skank week–I think I used up my inspiration (Beloved) two weeks early, or some silly thing. I want something gorgeously dry and sophisticated today, although skank could be that too, I suppose. No matter. I am contentedly wearing La Pausa, and honestly, I have to say this-I smell wonderful for the day that awaits me. WONDERFUL. I hope the day gives me due appreciation.

The kittens are being very sweet to me in the dear man’s absence. They are in full riot mode, but every now and again, Titus brings me his pink clothes peg so I can throw it and he can fetch it. He seems to like me to be involved. Eric tires sooner than the Brown Bros, and he is now in a small purring heap on my lap. He is now over five months old, but his point colour is very slow coming in. He has recently produced very pale apricot smudges under his eyes, but his mask consists mainly of this one dark apricot patch between his eyebrows, and he looks all the time as though he’s frowning in concentration. His paws have developed unconnected, random smudges of barely discernible apricot. His tail has the most consistent colour: kind of red, but actually (I think) closer to apricot. I think he might be a cream point (it is genetically possible) but the dear man says red point. Eric isn’t saying anything.

Be well, all. Oh, and if you haven’t tried La Pausa, please put it on your To Do list to do so. I’m sure you’d appreciate it, even if you don’t love it.

    SotD(r) = Eau des Merveilles
    SotD(l) = 34 boulevard Saint Germain

The JdB I wore last night gently lingers, so it took a moment to decide what to add.

So, Eau des Merveilles on the right arm because I missed it, and 34bSG on the left because I thought it might be a bit skanky. Not sure about that, but it does have a bit of rotten funk that smells fantastic.

Zero on the skank scale here in Prada’s Infusion d’Iris. First of all, it is too hot for skank in my neck of the woods today–and I had an IEP meeting at my son’s school and chose not to kill anyone with civet or castoreum. But also, I have finally resupplied myself with my favorite shampoo and conditioner, which smell like powdery iris AND are really great products for my thick, curly, dry hair. I love the scent of my hair and was hoping to amplify it with the Prada. The Prada is nice, but not as fab as my hair scent this AM–No.4 l’eau de Mare.

Do tell what are the hair products you are using. Other curly gals need to know – I have been using DevaCurl which smells like lemon pledge mixed with cheap rose oil. Not a good hair fragrance (or any fragrance for the matter of fact)

Yah. I don’t like the Deva scent either. So, I just use the Hydrating shampoo and conditioner (called “Condition” for this product). If you try it, let me know what you think!

    Back from a business trip.
I wore Prada Infusion d’Homme these 2 days when I was away. I couldn’t overdo a fragrance at an exhibition, so Prada felt elegant and sophisticated and tactful at the same time

That Prada is on my “ought to try” list.

For what is surely our last day of nice weather this year I’m wearing Soivohle Honeysuckle Bird. Lovely and sweet.

Inspired by Bear’s SOTD yesterday and Tuesday, I have hopped on the skank wagon. SOTD = vintage Rochas Femme, from the sample stash. At first, all I smelled was a beautiful, spicy oriental perfume, and I wondered if my sniffer was out of whack. Then 5 to 10 minutes later, Hello Skanky! I like it, though.

Last night I had one of THOSE phone calls… the “Good News, Bad News” ones. My brother called to tell me that he had been in an accident that totalled his 3/4 ton work truck. And that the other vehicle involved was a big rig. The good news was that he walked away with bumps and bruises. He is seeing a doctor today to get checked out.

Thanks everyone! I have to admit that I poured myself a nice stiff drink when my brother was telling me the details of the accident. We both know that he was very lucky the other day.

*Waves to Robin and sniffs appreciatively*

Friday here and I have a high pole of stuff to get through today at work. I just need everyone to stay away and let me crank through it. This may or may not have influenced my choice of SOTD: ELDO’s Rien. Anyway as it is the Friday before a long weekend lots of people will probably take today off so I may get my wish LOL.

Went commando most of the day — preschool open house tonight so I was going to pick something completely skank-free, but I have a hankering for Dryad. It’s not terribly skanky on me, but as I think I’ve mentioned before, the drydown makes me think of clean kitten fur. Skank level is a cute little *meow* rather than a “RAWHHHR!* 🙂

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

People, my 100 mL bottle will be depleted this year. I think I’ve been using this bottle for the past 2.5 years (I don’t think I could have managed this in 1.5 so 2.5 is my best guess). I have enough back ups to keep me marinated for many many years!

Good thing you have backups of No. 19! If it isn’t your work, it’s your commute that is calling for it. 😉

Hi hajusuuri, Do you like the edt too? Do you think there is a big difference between the edt and edp? I’ve only smelled the edt and Poudre versions. I’m thinking of blind buying the edp because I like the other 2 so much.

I like, own and wear all possible versions of No 19 and so far I haven’t come across any I didn’t like (well, I do not count Poudre as a version of No 19 but it’s OK too). But EdT is still my #1 (I like it more than even the extrait).
If you like EdT, I don’t see how you might not like the EdP but it won’t necessarily be better for you. Why do you want to buy it blindly? Aren’t there any perfumes that you tried already and liked but haven’t bought yet?

Hi Undina, I was going to buy the edp blindly because it gets so much love and I can’t find anywhere to try it. I live near the Chanel boutique in South Coast plaza California and they don’t even carry it or have a tester. Since you like the edt the best I think I’ll hold off for now. Thank you for your answer. Yes I want to buy and try so many other perfumes. Spot on.????

I find the EDT more floral and wispy whereas the EDP is greener, has more body and you definitely smell the earthy Iris. If you are in the U.S., I would love to send you a decant to try it for yourself! Click on my username to get my email address. Hope to hear from you – I enjoy spreading the love for the EDP.

Nothing to do with perfumes, but at work, whenever someone talks about a memorable experience (including eating, exercising) or a book they’ve read or listened to, invariably, one of us would ask “Was it life-changing?” Well, I want a person trying No.19 EDP for the first time to answer Yes! to that question 🙂
