Tuesday scent of the day 9/12

Posted by Robin on 12 September 2017 268 Comments

blue Natsume Artisan Teapot

Happy National Day of Encouragement! Plus, Chocolate Milkshake Day, which is encouraging too. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Aedes de Venustas Copal Azur. Tea at the moment is a plain old English breakfast.

Reminder: on 9/15 we're doing edition 2 of the Picture challenge (you can see edition 1 here). Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is Portraits of the *** Family, called The Family Gathering, summer 1867 - early winter 1868 by Frédéric Bazille, shown recently in the exhibit Frédéric Bazille and the Birth of Impressionism. You can read more about the painting here, and you can see a larger image here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the blue Natsume Artisan Teapot is $349 at Palais des Thés. "The Natsume teapots are designed by the famous Japanese cast iron specialist and designer, Hisanori Masuda. Simple and undecorated, this model is one of the most recent products of the artist's years-long search for purity of form."

I’m in Amouage Beloved today- just pulled it out of storage now that the weather is cooler. I wanted to bring some with me for touch-ups but didn’t have a clean vial so I sprayed a little into an empty Tabac Aurea tube – should be an interesting combo!

Hi! All is well….we lost power for 7 hours yesterday due to wind gusts, but no big deal. The kids were home with Dad, and played board games and burned ALL my good scented candles everywhere! LOL! We cooked by candlelight, and then actually had dinner conversation by candlelight. All in all, not bad! :)

I cannot find a heavily discounted bottle @ Marshalls and leave without it.
    LOL

This is pleasant, with the herbal green patchouli of the original beneath roses, heliotrope, and Szechuan pepper. The latter note reminds me of Le Feu D’Issey.
    Spoiler alert!
The way my mind works, Portrait of a Lady is the scent of the painting.

Robin, that is terrific choice. I love ❤️ Copal Azur- it always seems right – never boring – it is one of my favorite go- to’s, A top 5, even in the summer. I have a FB. I adore incense.
I am teetering between Elixir des Merveilles with the chocolate vibe to match our Milkshake theme or an uplifting scent like Aqua di Parma Colonia.
I would love to know what you would recommend as an encouraging Rose? I badly need one in my rotation.

Today’s scent of the day is Narcisso Bleu Noir. Bought as a blind buy, and really like this. I was never keen on the original or flankers. Has anybody tried any of the Pierre Gillaume crosiere’s? I’m really tempted by a set on bloom perfumery, £65 for 4x15ml.

You can get a 2ml sample set of all the Collection Croisiere and Huitieme Art scents from Pierre Guillaume – might be worth trying before going for the 15ml

Here are my notes, for what they’re worth:
Rivages Noirs – Melon and a little spice, but a slight scent.
Entre Ciel et Mer – Fresh and unusual, but ultimately doesn’t work hard enough for its living.
Foudre – a nice fragrance, sort of sweet/ sharp/ earthy, and meant to evoke the smell of champaca flowers just before a thunderstorm.
Paris Seychelles – Metallic sour notes drown insipid florals
Metal Hurlant – Smells of petrol, in a good way
Mojito Chypre – Nasty chemical strawberry

Foudre got onto my longlist; Metal Hurlant might have done but Histoire des Parfums “Petroleum” displaced it (and to be honest I then bought Gucci Guilty Absolute and have my fuel oil needs covered for the moment).

I bought a sample of LL Aldehyde 44 which I loved in the store and still really like, but realized it smells very similar to Chanel no 22-so I’m wearing both today. Aldehyde 44 on upper arms and no 22 on wrists. The LL is sheerer and has a hint of that woody amber present in many of the LLs. The Chanel is richer to me. Enjoying both.

Thanks for that observation. I am going to revisit the Aldehyde 44 with that in mind. My grandma always wore Chanel 22 and I love the association with it. I still have a bar of soap (of this scent) from her that I have kept for over 10 years now since she died.

That’s such a sweet association! I’ve smelled some vintage 22 (EDC) thanks to a kind NSTer and it doesn’t smell like the current version, to me anyway. I’d be curious to hear your take on it, though.

This is the one I usually wear when I have “meetings, meetings, meetings”: it smells wonderful but since it’s an extrait, I’m not worried that I’d suffocate everybody in a small meeting room.

Good morning everyone. I hope Irma survivors are doing all right. My SOTD is Le Labo Vanille 44 which I got in the city exclusives sample set recently. I’ve kept coming back to this one in part because it’s just plain pleasant, and also because it’s got some depth and intrigue. I get a lot of the aldehydes and bergamot up front, vanilla dead center, and somewhat sweet guiac wood, but not the smoky incense that others have mentioned. Although I used to think I don’t like vanilla as a scent note, it is starting to seem as if I really do. This could be a keeper.

Needed something relaxing today and went for one I used to (practically) bathe in, Lolita Lempicka. The smallest spritz on one wrist is more than enough.

Tried Chanel Gabrielle this weekend at Sephora. It’s….boring? But perfectly suited to the Sephora crowd, so probably the market they were aiming for. Pretty none the less, but I think there are cheaper options that fit that bill.

We’re getting effects from Irma: gusts of wind and lots of rain. My internet (Verizon DSL, on some really old and deteriorating copper lines) may go out any minute.

SOTD is SmellBent Hungry Hungry Hippies. Pretty sure hungry hippies would love a chocolate milkshake.

In other non-fragrance news, my house seemed to have survived Irma. I’m mailing front door keys to my neighbors so they can get inside to check for leaks, but it seems my area dodged a bullet. Still no power in the hood and my neighbors are suffering temps in the high 90’s with ungodly humidity. Luckily, they have water. Worried about the older folks and the very young, who can become overheated so quickly, especially if there is limited drinking water.

Thinking of everyone whose life may have been turned upside down by Irma.

That happened to me yesterday: I left house without applying any perfume. I did have two small vials hidden in my cosmetics bag just for such case, so I chose one of the two to wear. Resolution? I have to have with me more choices! :) (and it was actually perfume, for which I have a FB and usually enjoy it – but as I discovered, only when I purposefully choose it to wear from my complete collection.)

    1) Motorcycles and their deliberate noise. Last night my last nerve snapped and I went outside with my shotgun and demanded, POLITELY, that the motorcycles be used on another side street. The drivers were sufficiently cowed but we shall see.

    2) As a result had trouble getting back to sleep and once I did, OVERSLEPT. ARRRRGH!

    3) In Prada Oeillet after a shower with Rose Jam. The two marry perfectly.

    4) Coffee and homemade breakfast cookies made by a dear friend.

We shall see. The neighborhood is a working class/poor neighborhood that is slowly turning to yuppie, so you have people who previously would do whatever and not care about how much noise they make.

I really, really care about the noise made. I REALLY DO.

I HATE, HATE, HATE LEAF BLOWERS. Effing HATE them. They blow dust and leaves about, leaving clouds of crap for you to breathe it in. And never mind- looks like the dust and leaves just settle right the heck back where they were. Why sweep when you can make ear shattering noise and waste gas instead.

There are actually some US EPA regulations regarding leaf blowers because of the dust hazard. Gaah. With the lawn care companies, I’ve found what helps me is noting the start time. It doesn’t usually go on all that long. But the bikers could go on all night, I imagine. A musician told me there are hearing protectors made for drummers that will shut out anything.

Dogs don’t bark out of no good reason- they either need or want attention to something. Their hearing is keen and their eyesight different in the dark, so I would actually be more worried about a dog than the motorcycle (driven by an obnoxious person who does not even live on the street).

Morning, all. A sleepless night for me (now comparatively rare, thank goodness) brings me early to NST. I’m wearing the last lingering hints of last night’s bedtime scent, Divine by Divine, bought on my last trip to Paris. I don’t choose it very often, but I should amend that. It’s warm and friendly, but retains a certain self-possessed sophistication. I probably don’t wear it often because its character is so different from mine. I should strive to amend that.

I have a minor skirmish in the Kitten Wars happening on my lap. Titus has a bad habit: he likes to suck on his brothers’ fur as though he is still feeding from his mother. Alexander dislikes it, biffs him around the ear hole, and takes himself out of reach to higher ground, but Eric HATES it, and violent hostilities ensue when Titus pins him down to indulge in his little need. Right now, I’m the site of the battle. Poor Eric’s tummy fur is all tufty and soggy, and I have minor collateral damage.

Wednesdays are busy teaching days for me, so I’m going to wear En Passant, I think. Its soft lilac notes always encourage me to think of spring, and goodness knows I need to after this long dreary winter. It’s also fresh and pretty, which should keep me centred in the stuffiness of the classrooms.

    Hey, be well, all.

Sometimes kittens or cats will try to suckle if they have been weaned from their mother too early. Other times, it’s something they do to try and comfort/calm themselves.

I also do not understand that particular discontinuation. The only reason I can think of is that it was too expensive (while at the regular Penhaligon’s price) for what it was, and people weren’t buying it. I bought my bottle deep discounted when they went on sale after being discontinued. And, as far as I know, many others did the same.

Philosykos EDP, which I guess matches the painting a bit – though that wasn’t my aim when I put it on.

My sample of this is dwindling. I’m going to have to decide what to do when it’s gone – maybe a tiny bottle of the EDT? Or the roll-on? I don’t really wear this in the winter, so I suppose there’s no urgency.

SOTD is Mohur EDP. Love it, but hope it’s not too much for an eye appointment later on. Lunch was delicious homemade egg rolls that a patient’s wife made. She is Filipino. Really sweet of her. They were all rolled up and I just stored them in the freezer until they were ready to fry. Probably overdid it, but it was worth it. Now waiting for banana bread to bake, which hopefully cancels out the hot oil smell from the egg rolls!

I kept seeing a commercial this morning for the Coffee Mate ‘seasonal flavors’. Aside from the fact that it’s not even October yet, it’s still 104° here. Psst, advertising guys: I don’t want pumpkin-spice anything right now. ????

I’d like pumpkin spice year round please! But, more than liking the actual flavor, I think I like it because it’s a harbinger of fall, which is my favorite season. There’s something about snuggling up in a sweater, drinking a hot pumpkin spice anything, or eating a hot pumpkin spice anything (preferably a scone!) that makes me feel so contented, happy, and centered. I have no idea why, but I long for it all year.

Fall is coming here, there are leaves falling from my maple tree and soon they will be ankle-deep and it will be time to rake. I like raking in the cool, crisp autumn air, there is something relaxing about the rhythmic repetition.

SotD = Guerlain Cologne du Parfumeur

When I first spritzed CdP it smelled so strongly of terragon that I almost tossed the decant. But my love for colognes is so strong I saved it for a another hot day. Turns out it’s a keeper.

Last night I ended a 24 hour break from media and from fragrance, a much-needed mental and emotional clearing of the decks so to speak. It is great to be back with NST. It is especially good to hear news from those who have suffered adversity in recent days. Thank you for keeping us updated amidst more urgent concerns.

Love that blue teapot! It reminds me to get back to watching the Amazon Prime Japan series. There are a couple episodes devoted to design, and there is at least one part about teapots.

I do like the Japan series. Each episode is interesting, and there’s no need to watch them in order. The visuals are well done and the information is presented with care and thoughtful attention to detail. The narration is given alternately in English and Japanese. I adore listening to spoken Japanese (with English subtitles on).

Feeling nostalgic today as I read about the crisp air and falling leaves in other parts of the country. I grew up with 4 seasons and now live in the desert. September used to be my favorite month and is now my most hated as we usually are still in triple digits and I just want the heat to be over already. But, when I sit out on my patio at Christmas in a balmy 70 degrees, I’ll remind myself why I live here.

Chanel No5 EDP today. I love this in all weather and occasions, but it felt like a good autumnal choice.

Waft a little this way! No. 5 edp makes me happy all year.

And I agree, September is better when it’s autumnal rather than a sucker punch of hot weather. But I can take the heat in exchange for a mild Christmas day. :)

It is so nice to come here and see all the familiar “faces” commenting!Perfumelover67 and Chocolatemarzipan,Mals and Nozknoz to name but a few!I’ve been out of the loop for months due to work and other stuff in life!a Dental procedure which left me with a gigantic hole from mouth to sinus caused huge health problems and affected my sense of smell for a couple of weeks. It’s getting better though and the big problem has been sorted at least.I did not wear anything today as said sinuses are still stuffy and blocked.
I did smell some new goodies, but have to say Gabrielle was a big disappointment after all the excitement. My best purchase recently was TF Tobacco Vanille body spray.A huge can of it,much cheaper than the perfume, but lovely and effective! And it does not turn sour on me like the perfume does.Score!Another beautiful find for this Iris-loving perfumista has been the Zegna Aqua d’Iris.Pretty good watercolor iris, but the “artist” used all the brightest colors in their palette.LoveLove.Can’t wait to smell Gaultier Scandal, being a lifelong fan of the man and his fashion/perfumes.Hope everyone has an awesome week!X

    8 sprays :-)

    Same thing tomorrow.

People are losing it. They’re speaking as if tomorrow is already Thursday, but no, if yesterday was Monday, September 11, today is September 12 and a Tuesday, then tomorrow is Wednesday. Right, right? The problem is that most of us worked for 3 weeks straight including weekends (although I had a mini hiatus for my uncle’s memorial service last weekend). Anyway, I will be escalating tomorrow. Maybe it will be a 10 spritz day. I probably should switch to 28 La Pausa EDT to avoid gassing others, including myself!
