Friday scent of the day 9/8

Posted by Robin on 8 September 2017 300 Comments

Happy Friday, happy Star Trek Day and happy International Literacy Day! Our community project this week: we're doing 'world niche'... wear a fragrance from a niche brand that isn't French, Italian or British.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm spanning two continents, with a layer of Switzerland (Tauer Rose Delight) and a layer of Canada (The 7 Virtues Afghanistan Orange Blossom).

Reminder: on 9/15 we're doing edition 2 of the Picture challenge, edition 2 (you can see edition 1 here). Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is Portraits of the *** Family, called The Family Gathering, summer 1867 - early winter 1868 by Frédéric Bazille, shown recently in the exhibit Frédéric Bazille and the Birth of Impressionism. You can read more about the painting here, and you can see a larger image here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: you can read more about the Rose of Bohemia map shown above at BigThink.

“Kitty, you must leave, this is an emergency.”
–Me chasing the cat out of the closet this morning after spilling approx. 4 drops of my Sadanne sample on the floor, so I could have enough room to kneel down and rub my wrists all over the floor. Sigh, I wish I did not love every dang thing from Slumberhouse so much.

Rose Ikebana from Hermes today. It was the easiest one to grab as the puppy was biting my legs, feet, jeans, and anything else she could get her teeth on. Standing still to choose a perfume is a dangerous thing in my house.

Thoughts on Gabrielle? It actually made it to my little Macy’s! It’s a pass for me, but appeals to my teenager, which makes perfect sense because I don’t think they are marketing it to my age group.

ok, now its calm down a bit and its pretty. I would say if someone were wearing this I would think “they are wearing a pretty perfume” That is how I feel about Chance also.

The day I tried it on skin it was very humid here and it started out so sweet I almost had to scrub, but I powered thru and it did settle down. I would agree it is “pretty.” I think they could have called it Coco Mademoiselle L’ Eau.

I’ve thought the recent Star Trek reboots were pretty darn good, but haven’t liked any of the TV series beyond TOS. I might give Discovery a shot, though. (If they haven’t caught me by Episode 3, I’m OUT. No guilt.)

TGIF! I am not quite fitting in with Vilhelm Parfumerie’s Morning Chess – turns out it’s a New York brand, but at least the owner was born in Sweden to a Swedish fater :-)

I am enjoying Morning Chess very much. Its green opening reminds me a little of TF Vert d’Encens, but it is sweeter and sunnier. The leather drydown is very nice too. It is the first sample I am wearing from Arielle Shoshana’s Vilhelm sample kit, and it makes me excited to try the other 9!

Love that rose map, Robin, and your idea of layering Switzerland and Canada.
Today I am layering too, although I am staying within one country – the US. Actually, the layering part was unplanned. I was going to wear Atelier Cologne Vetiver Fatal, put it on but was very disappointed (pale citrus floral), plus it was nearly gone after two hours. So I sprayed Keiko Mecheri Attar de Roses on my left wrist (candy rose or rose candy) and Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme (light oud rose) on my right wrist. (Oh, and Keiko Mecheri herself is Japanese – that’s an extra.)

Thanks everybody for all the comments yesterday regarding the passing of my coworker. The funeral was a beautiful and happy tribute to her life. Dancing Queen, Abba, we should all be as they sang to her.

Wearing Carner Barcelona D600. The more I wear it, the more I fall in love with it.

All who are in the path of Irma, please stay safe and report back whenever possible. It would be good to here you are fine. I have family in Miami and South Florida. Very stressful. My prayers with you all.

I like D600 because it is very cozy. The iris is not so noticeable for me, but the vanilla and cardamon with the vetiver makes it pretty and inviting. It is not so sweet. Sillage very soft. If sprayed on clothes it lasts at least 6 hours. It makes me smile.

Curious to know your opinion on the two JM. I did not care for either. And Twilly was much better than I had expected, (Hermes isn’t my favorite house). How they were marketing Twilly I didn’t have high expectations, but it easily exceeded them.

I did not care for any either. I think the redcurrant was better than the hazelnut. Still, I will not bother to get any of them.

I agree, the oakwood JM’s were not exciting. The red currant note was nice, but it didn’t last. Curious to smell the almond red currant holiday one which is not out yet. I liked the Black Juniper and Cedar better than either of the oakwood ones.

No word on FM Promise yet, but I did get to smell the new BV Eau de Velours. It was pleasant but didn’t last that long on me, not as good as the original. More money saved.

Still no Musc Mysterieux or Wonder Bouquet at Mugler, but they assure me they will be here in the next few weeks.

I liked Twilly, it was rather coconutty on me. Got a sample to test further.

I sniffed both new JM a few weeks ago. I was disappointed by the hazelnut one which smelt a lot more woody and less nutty than I would have wanted. But the redcurrant note in the other one was quite good, IMHO.

I tried the oaks, hoping they would smell like oak trees in autumn, a bit woody, bark-like, rich and mulchy but they didn’t really smell of anything much. The red currant opening was okay but I think blackberry and bay does that berry note far better. If it was perfume idol I would give them a ‘no’

Can we count Brittany as its own little country? I went with Iroaz this morning, thinking it was Irish. Drat! And I actually wanted to wear an Aftel, but couldn’t find ANY of my little samples and then realized I loved them all so much that they got used up in an instant … and I couldn’t decide which I wanted the most, so I never ordered more. Must fix that pronto!

I loved Coven SO MUCH when I sampled it. How long does it last on you? I tried it from a sample, and it faded really quickly, so I couldn’t justify the purchase. However, I have no idea if it was just the tiny dabbler sample I was using? Vanilla Hinoki is really great, too. That combo sounds stellar!

Wearing Zoologist Bat today. Had some allergery sinus mayhem this week and didn’t get to wear much perfume. (My post Neti pot yoga class was an embarrassing mess!!!! I hadn’t realized how much water was still in my sinuses until I was upside down!!)
I plan to try it with some Rose Perfection later, Robin!
Have to share with the only people who will understand how sweet this is: I wanted to go to the perfume exhibit at Somerset House in London but airfares were just too much. A newly found cousin who lived in London went and sent me drawings of her impressions of each of the scents (she’s an artist, not a perfumista), along with the names of the perfumers and perfumes in each of the exhibits and post cards, including one scented one of Dark Ride. Truly the sweetest thing!
    Happy Friday!

SOTD: Invocation Miwah, Canadian First Nations niche. It’s made by the Wendake (Huron) in Quebec resulting from a collaboration between Blue Eagle, a Wendake healer, and Michel Roudnitska.

Miwah is built around sweetgrass (hierchloe odorata), smelling of hay and vanilla because of the coumarin it contains. It’s a very resonant fragrance for me since it brings back memories of my grandmother’s sweetgrass sewing basket.

I’m not sure about samples but they do offer online sales of Miwah and six other scents. They aren’t hugely expensive. Google Invocation perfume Quebec and it will take you to their website.

I’m really interested in visiting their production facility. They are developing a Discovery Zone where you can smell and experiment with various herbal extracts.

It is lovely. I am very fond of the smells of the native plants here in Maine, just across the border from Quebec Sweetgrass, sweet fern, bayberry, balsam poplar and your namesake hamamelis (witch hazel).

Greeting the cool sunny day in Tauer Carillon pour un Ange, and picking up more of the earthiness in it than I usually do when I wear it in spring. (I finally used up a whole 1ml sample and am on to the second of three. I still kinda feel like that’ll do me for another couple of years — CpuA has an almost radioactive half-life, even at two drops per wearing.)

I find the Tauer’s to be very rich and long lasting – even his light ones like Vetiver Dance. All his rose ones I have samples of will last me forever, esp. Une Rose Chypre. But I’m glad I have an ounce or so of Maroc pour Elle.

I don’t have a ticket to the game (and the rest of the family will be at a cross-country meet), but I am seriously considering just driving over and standing outside the stadium with the camera, to catch the Corps marching over before the game.

Everyone has really picked some very cool fragrances this morning! I need to look some of them up. SOTD for me is Andy Tauer Maroc pour Elle. I love love love this fragrance – chic, exotic, earth mama. Perhaps my favorite use of patchouli, jasmine and rose ever! Even my husband likes it and said I should wear it more often. I thank my fragrance stars that I got some in a split and some in a swap – enough to last a while.

LesNez Manoumalia: Swiss house, French perfumer, Pacific inspiration and very limited distribution; so very much world niche. Apart from that it, smells wonderful and is unlike anything else I’ve ever worn or tried.

I just read the Bois de Jasmin review and it sounds interesting. I see that the perfumer lived on Uvea (Wallis ) -such a remote place, I wonder what she was doing. Fantastic tapa cloth from that region , very intricate patterns ( Wallis and Futuna ) , almost like tattoo.

I am off work today and spending the morning in Amouage Ubar. When STC had that 20% off Labor Day sale, I grabbed a 2ml decant to see if I still didn’t like it or did I fall in love with it. I am finding that I am starting to fall in love with it but I am thinking that fall and cooler weather makes it more enjoyable. Post shower is going to be difficult though. I’m torn between wearing Andy Tauer’s LADDM or keep on going with Ubar.

Ubar is one of my all-time favorites but I cannot wear it in warmer weather, for me it’s late Fall or Winter fragrance. I enjoy LADDM as well (also preferably in cooler temperatures) – so whatever you end up wearing, you’ll smell great.

    Iris Ganache today.

I get iris Playdoh from this…seems overhyped to me.

What do we think are some of the best iris scents out there?

I just ordered a FB of Bois d’Iris which is quite lovely. And I like Iris Fauve. I must confess I haven’t tried Iris Silver Mist yet.

Iris!!! Let me chime in. I am only going to mention those not mentioned before.
      Khol de Bahrain
      Iris Celadon
Au Payer de Fleur d’Oranger Rose Irises
Xerjoff Irissss – out of my price range, so I am holding on the sample :)
Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue – like a poor cousin to Xerjoff, but still a beauty
The new Tiffany – it is a pretty nice Iris, somewhat on a sweeter side, but overwhelmingly sweet
Iris Silver Mist – I know this one is polarizing. I am in ‘I love it’ camp
Iris Nazarena – could have a better staying power, but I will take it anyway
Byredo 1996 and LM Cicatrices. They are somewhat similar, with Iris Nougat note. Lift up my mood every time I wear them
      Iris Cendre.
      No 19 EDP
Have I mentioned I love Iris? It is all hajusuuri’s fault, she introduced me to it as a note

SOTD is Agonist Arctic Jade. I own several from this line and this competes with Isis to be my favorite. It is honestly a little weird and overpowering so I don’t wear it that often but it’s interesting when I do. Lots of vanilla and ylang ylang, plus the fruity stuff (orange, raspberry, cranberry), very creamy overall.
I got home finally to Houston from my trip to visit my mom up north (flight back was delayed by airport closing) and what I saw of on the ride home from the airport looked surprisingly normal. My house had some pretty bad roof leaks and now I’ve got to deal with strong mildew smells (Yuck), but still I count myself lucky not to have flooded like so many people did. My cats and belongings are OK. I just have to get in line for the roof repair people and then for sheetrock fixing where the rain ran down. I send sympathy and hope to people in paths of the new hurricanes.

SOTD: Sixteen92’s Bruise Violet. I ordered a sample of this after it won a big award last spring. It reminds me a bit of Lipstick Rose, but less sweet and more waxy. The rose note reminds me of Rose Jam, which I love. It’s a perfume oil – I suspect I would like it more if I could spritz it, but it’s worth a sniff for anyone enjoys the makeup-inspired scents that were popular a few years ago.

Have you thought about getting them food plates instead of bowls? There was an article that came out recently explaining that many cats experience whisker sensitivity and do not like eating from bowls. We did side-by-side tests of food in bowls and plates for our cats, and they preferentially ate plate food. I don’t know if this is true for all cats, of course, but it might be worth considering!

I free feed dry food in quite shallow, wide-lipped bowls. However, the ones that I have been using are stoneware bowls that my Mom bought in Germany in the ’60s. They’ve already broken one playing chase, so I wanted to preserve the others. I bought a wide, shallow pottery bowl at a home goods store a few months ago and they have no trouble with it, so I went back to find more. I do use flat plates for the canned food that I feed them twice per day.

I just looked up Dear Polly from Vilhelm. The notes sound very comfortable, like you could wear it and enjoy it and no one else would give the wrinkle nose look about perfume in public :)

I emailed Vilhelm directly on three separate occasions inquiring how I could go about getting a sample and never got a response. I’m on the email list at Ari’s for when the sample set is back in stock. Indeed a good deal!

Have you tried Beloved? If you haven’t, you really should! On me at least, it smells very similar to Gold–like it has the same animalic and woody components but with a different floral signature. This morning when I spritzed it on, it renewed my mental debate about whether I’d chose it or Gold if I could only ever wear one. ????

I have tried Beloved and it is beautiful on its own. Reminded me of Aromatics Elixir, with more flowers and gorgeous woody base. Still if I had to choose I’d buy a bottle of Gold :) … and another mini of Beloved :)

I am wow’ed by everyone’s world niche ideas. We live on a big planet but it’s a small world after all.

This weekend I will begin reading Spring Snow by Yukio Mishima, prompted by lovestosmellgood’s mention a few days ago. There is a thoughtful review at Bois de Jasmin.

    https://boisdejasmin.com/2017/08/yukio-mishimas-spring-snow-perfume-in-the-library.html

Enjoy and let me know how you are liking Spring Snow.
Proust’s influence is pretty pronounced in Spring Snow, but I felt Mishima easier to read. But after reading Swans Way, I found most books easier to read since Proust was very challenging to me.

      Keep me posted

Spring Snow will be “sitting up” reading, the kind of book where I want to pay attention and savor each detail, rather than “lying down” reading, the kind of thing I read while hoping to fall asleep.

Byredo Gypsy Water for me today. We took a trip to Sweden/Norway/Finland two years ago at Christmas (yes, dark and cold and I still loved it!) – son was finishing study abroad in Stockholm, and we have close relatives in Norway, friends in Finland. It was a wonderful trip, but what I really wanted to say is that I made sure to get to the Byredo store in Stockholm – what fun to go in person. Lots of people interested in Mojave Ghost at that time. Absolutely loved Stockholm and highly recommend.

I find it extremely easy to wear. I had the decant, which was generously shared with me and now empty, on my bedside table. Every morning I found myself grabbing for it as it’s a no-brainer and I would almost always feel like wearing it.

When I tried EEiG I liked it and planned to test more – and never did. Recently there was a huge sale on it at HauteLook, so I decided to try it again but unfortunately my sample is off – so I ended up not buying the bottle.

I know i saw that sale and was very tempted! EEiG was a full bottle that i drained about two years ago…it , to my nose, was a sweet muted suede/leather…I loved it…and the bottle is absolutely gorgeous…I also have Field Notes (well, technically, it is not mine but it was abandoned by a family member so I use it!)

Which ones have you tried? I am going to suggest you try some of the men offerings…maybe they will appeal to you more? Also, have you tried any of the three note ones? Like Cassis, Rose and Sandalwood, or Mate, Heliotrope & Patchouli or Bergamot, Jasmine & Labdanum (they are just so pretty and accessible and perfect for the office). Yesterday I drove a younger family member to the library and she smelled divine and when I asked what she was wearing it was Peach Blossom, Violet & Vanilla.

Dames are not safe blind buys for me, because I feel like the bases of the different scent lines he has work SO differently on my skin. I was in the exact same boat (the Dames I tried just weren’t working with me, and I felt bad because he seemed so nice…) until I tried some of the artist collection ones. Dark Horse (which I also don’t own a full bottle of, but also will probably be buying this fall) is super wearable and I love Earth Mother. Both are really different from Monsoon. If the artist collection ones are what *aren’t* working for you, then totally try the soliflores or 3-note ones that CM8 is recommending! They smell GREAT in-bottle and I wish they’d work for me – my body just sours most of those for some reason.

I’ve tried a couple of the 3 notes, Black Vanilla?, New Man musk oil – which is pretty layered, but too tame on it’s own – Dark Horse, Earth Mother and Monsoon. I need to give Dark Horse another try, going by the notes I should love it but it didn’t leave an impression.

The boyfriend has left for a nine-day trip to Boston (mostly for work, but conveniently, his family lives nearby), so I was freeeeeee to spritz whatever and however much I wanted! Therefore I stand before you in THREE SPRAYS of SSS Rose Musc!!!!! I smell absolutely fabulous. I’ve blind-swapped three SSS scents so far, and they were both resounding successes. Hey, that reminds me, I should dig up my Winter Woods before he gets back.

This does mean that I will be left alone with the kittens for longer than I ever have before. Between the two of them, they need seven different medications. I’ve written up a med schedule for the week, so everything should be fine, but I’m still a bit nervous I’ll forgot and go to work without medicating them or something.

When I started reading your comment, I half-expected to see that you were feeling down and didn’t want to wear any perfume – so three sprays of Rose Musc as an unexpected twist :) With most SSS’s perfumes I do better with dabbing. Or, if I spray, it’s a very modest one spray. You’ll be able to smell something on your clothes and hair for the next couple of days at least (not that it’s a bad thing).

About the medication: you can tape a paper and a pencil/pen to the exit door of your place and write down the next date every morning on your way to work to mark that you’ve done with morning medications.

Hahaha. Of course I will miss him greatly this week, but I’m looking at the silver lining :) And it won’t be such a bad thing to have some time on my own. But yeah, SSS makes quite enormous scents that do love to stick around. Three sprays was on the edge of my own perfume limit, let alone my boyfriend’s. I have perfume-guzzling skin (or a super-swiftly desensitizing nose), but I can still get some good gusts of gorgeous scent.

I actually do have the meds table on the exit door of my apartment! The plan is to cross out meds as I leave. Unfortunately, I am excellent at turning things into background visuals. This morning, I left without crossing out the meds I gave the cats, for example. It’s going to be a struggle to remember to LOOK at the white board on my way in or out.

Finishing the week in Ireland, as SOTD is “Sybarite” by Cloon Keen Atelier.

    Top: incense and bergamot;
    Mid: jasmine, bulgarian rose and sandalwood;
Base: amber, patchouli, musk and cedar.

A great Summer incense, which on this cool Autumn day has surprised me with its longevity (not always a Cloon Keen Atelier strength). TOMK doesn’t like it much, and more fool he. ;^)

The moon is huge this morning and the air so fresh and earthy smelling …home again. Wearing Ys-Uzac Immortal Beloved , like plum liqueur with a hint of dusty spice, immortelle. I should probably read the notes. I am a huge fan of Ys-Uzac though there are a couple that Are scrubbers on me ( Dragon Tattoo , BOM Jasmine/Incense). A lot of their scents remind me of Serge Lutensin style whichis why I like them. Thinking of getting Metaboles which is a great tomato leaf perfume.

Yes, that’s good too. I have a sample of it and may get a bottle next winter. Monodie is their prettiest scent, I think but not for me. I have almost finished my bottles of Pohadka, Lale and Jeanne. Immortal Beloved has that rose jammy thing going, kind of syrupy. I know I wear these perfumes a lot because they feel a bit more personal, having corresponded a bit with their maker. I am very sentimental like that…attaching value to inanimate objects through friendships and memories etc.

Me too, that’s why I love Andy Tauer and Vero Kern’s stuff so much. Meeting them personally and chatting with them about their creations make them so much more meaningful.

My world niche SOTD is Amouage Beloved. Mission fabulously accomplished, if I do say so myself. ????

I caught sight of a bobcat in the yard across the street this morning. Its tail was swishing adorably as it moseyed along among the plants.

Have a great Friday and a lovely weekend, NSTers, and stay extra safe if you’re in the areas affected by hurricanes or earthquakes!

Chanel No. 5 EDP is what I’m wearing today, because exactly one year ago today I was in Paris. It was our first day of the trip, and I wore a black cotton swing dress, scarf and my ivory & black flats. That day was so much fun, I even remember my outfit :) One of the stops for our first day was Chanel 31 Rue Cambon. We also visited Caron, Guerlain, Fragonard and Galeries Lafayette. My husband and I called it the PPT (Paris Perfume Tour). Great memory!!

    Happy Friday!!

In AJ Arabia Widian V (not sure if that’s the correct order on that name lol) today. It’s meh and I wish I had worn one of my Tauers. Didn’t have time to post yesterday but was back in Spain in Loewe 001, which is growing me.

    Have a good weekend everyone!

Going for the obscure today with a New Zealand perfume, High Country Tussock for Queenstown Perfumiers, from a sample courtesy of Kanuka. It’s a lovely fresh green for all of 10 minutes, then it’s pretty much gone. And that was with a more thorough dousing than I expected, when I accidentally poured most of the sample down my arm :)

Representing sunny California in SSS Yin & Ylang. So rich and heady. Adore all Laurie’s fragrances that I’ve tried. They just work with my skin chemistry, I guess. And the even better news is that I’ve now got a legit way to order more from her. I was so disappointed when she couldn’t post internationally anymore.

I chose Slow Explosions from Imaginary Authors of Portland, OR today. This is a great early fall scent with saffron, apple, leather according to the description. It reminds me of a more affordable alternative to Wazamba even though incense isn’t listed for SE and it’s not quite as smoky.

Smoky makes me think of the whole US Northwest. Along with the worries of flooding and hurricanes, hope everyone coping with the fires are able to breathe and doing alright, too.

Had to be up and out very early and around people, so went with IA Saint Julep. It lasts well on me, and for some reason I can smell it more than other scents I wear. I can’t quite identify what it is that is most prominent. Must keep wearing, I guess, until I do figure it out…. ????????

When I went to the pharmacy I sprayed a little Lise Watier Neige from a tester in order to up the Canadian factor. The two scents were not particularly complementary.

It’s been a rough work week, so I’ve barely been able to post but I’m making time today! For the Friday project I went to Malaysia with Auphorie Miyako. I can barely smell it anymore because this morning I dabbed rather than sprayed because it’s very strong.

I gave myself the challenge of wearing non-US niche all week:
Monday – Hiram Green Dilettante (Netherlands
Tuesday – Amouage Ciel Woman (Oman)
Wednesday – accidental tiny bit of Tauer Rose Delight body oil (Switzerland) and April Aromatics San Francisco Rose (Germany)
Thursday – Andrea Maack Coven (Iceland)

Mmmm you have smelled great this week! Miyako is indeed strong! When I tested it, I put just a few drops on and went to the gym several hours later. Someone made a very clear point of moving away from me. Oops!

TGIF! SOTD = Tauer’s Incense Rose EdP, from the sample stash. Although Andy Tauer is based in Switzerland, a sniff of Incense Rose immediately takes me to the Southwest. Amazing stuff for sure.

American: solid Jasmine from http://queenofthemeadow.com/about-us/ Incidentally, the base has very similar ingredients to this: https://www.amazon.com/BotaniVet-KeraSnout-Organic-Pet-Balm/dp/B072BKKSKN I thin my dog prefers unscented.

Went with Le Labo Rose 31 from a sample, then doubled up with Iris 39 oil mixed with a moisturizer. They are definitely the same pedigree base. I even snuck some Iris oil on my hubby.

Still no rain today, but we were promised some. Hot, humid and hazy instead. The birds all seem to be very busy too and out of sorts.

Went golfing today to try and distract me from all the weather related things going on and hoping for the best with Irma.

I had intended to travel to Japan today with Annayake Tsukimi, but it’s still so darn hot here in Denver that I knew it would be too much. Instead, i sauntered over the border to Canada in Zoologist’s Hummingbird. This is my second wearing of my sample, and I see a full bottle in my immediate future ????.

    SOTD = SSS Pacific Forest

Sonoma Scent Studio. United States. 2004

My SSS collection is pretty accessible and I had a hard time choosing which one to wear today. Insure picked a winner!

I’ll be working all weekend on account of Irma. I’m hoping all we’ve prepared are not needed but it is looking like we will. Everyone in the path do take care.

    Commuting Woes No. 391:
    – Don’t you hate it when someone who sits on an edge seat extends their arm / elbow and takes up valuable standing space? I usually get the standing space back by squeezing my tote thisclose to the barrier on my side of the space (which means it is as close to the person’s head as is safe) or, I slightly bump the elbow and apologize or, wait until the elbow is temporarily unextended and quickly claim the vacated space.
    – La Vie est Belle in the wild; twice in one day, oh my!

I love SSS; haven’t smelled Pacific Forest myself, but am positive it is wonderful if you are wearing it!

Bless you for standing watch on Irma; it sounds so ominous. Praying for the safety of all in its path…
