Thursday scent of the day 8/24

Posted by Robin on 24 August 2017 248 Comments

Cire Trudon Josephine graphic

A very happy Almost-Friday to you! Plus, happy National Waffle Day and International Strange Music Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

It's a testing day for me — that counts for back to school, right? I'm going to start with the new Cire Trudon set.

Reminder: on 8/25 we're doing Back to school... wear a fragrance that fits the theme, for whatever reason.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Atelier Cologne Oud Saphir from the sample set. It’s obviously synthetic from start to finish, with a sort of black-raspberry fruitiness up top plus a clean, tidy oud and suede at the core — it is determined not to offend anybody — but to my surprise I REALLY like it. It’s fun! At that price I can’t see myself owning a full bottle, but never say never.

House twin! I’m in Oolong Infiniti. Of all the their scents I’ve tried it’s the only one I’ve worn more than once. Like you, I don’t adore it enough for the price of a full bottle. But I’ll enjoy my sample while it lasts.

I like Oolong Infini as well, got a 30ml bottle of it that I need to display on my dresser. Need to use it more often.

Slow wake up Thursday here. I woke up a couple of hours ago but can’t seem to get moving. Drinking coffee, watching an old, old episode of Charmed and thinking about doing some housework/laundry.

SOTD is left over SmellBent Incensed from last night. I really like this one.

Keeping all the people in Texas and Louisiana in my thoughts! ✌????

Twins on the slow wake up! I just now at my breakfast and it’s almost lunch time.

AND, so slow that I had to google Texas Louisiana to know what you were talking about. Stay safe everyone!

LOL! Honestly it’s not a bad price and if you don’t like anything easy enough to pass on :) The presentation is gorgeous and would make a nice gift too (I have been known to do that with sampler sets that either don’t work for me or I love so much that I want to share the wealth…did that several times with Ineke samplers which are just stunning!)

Here’s your pin chocolatemarzipan8! I chose Olmsted & Veux, Graylocke, and Siano. Reading more, I’m skeptical that I will love them. But, hey, why not try?

Yup! no harm in trying…and like I said the samplers are lovely so you can always pass them on as gifts if nothing works for you…but if you like vetiver I think you will be smitten with Greylocke :)

Ha! knew you would love it! I also love that they use recycled materials, have no phylates and parabens in their products (sorry Koyel if I misspelled those!), don’t test on animals and give back to various charities…it’s a win win anyway you look at it!

It called to me as well, and I replied. Olmsted designed two or three of Rochester’s parks, including the one that shows off all its lilacs for the annual Lilac Festival.

I listened to the siren’s song, selected some samples, and then stepped back from the ledge (sorry for the metaphor mixing). However, if cm8 keeps up with the daily wearings, I might have to re-visit the site….I mean, how much restraint can be expected of me, really?

International Strange Music Day?? That is my kind of day! I live for strange music! Let me know if you need any recs.

Preparing for Hurricane Harvey today in Houston. Thankfully, so far, Houston is right on the edge of the storm, but I’m not taking any chances.

I’m picking the new Flash by Andy Tauer, as I got my sample (and his magazine) yesterday. Delicious! It’s like a more unisex PHI.

accidentally testing (I grabbed the wrong vial) Ex Nihilo Fleur Narcotique today. I get a LOT of peach, which I find a little nauseating. Not for me..

..yesterday evening we had eggs on eggo waffles as breakfast for dinner while watching Stranger Things (where coincidentally the main character loves eggos) – first time eating waffles in months – and look, today’s waffles day! How mildly exciting.

A beautiful perfume that is making me more cheerful after I received the good news from my boss an hour ago, that I got the promotion I was hoping for for a while already. Well, I guess I have the perfect excuse to buy a full bottle of a perfume from my loooong shopping list to celebrate. Which one? Tough decision since I am allowing myself to only one.

Early stages of Bruma are lovely peppery iris – violet, then turns darker & drier. Very much like, very discouraged about how many old scents I’d have to pull out for comparison! Also not sure how long it will stay interesting.

Sad to say that’s as far as I’ve gotten, although also ended up putting on Twilly d’Hermes.

Oh! We don’t have it yet by me (coming September 1 according to the local Chanel counter SA)… most interested in trying that one too. I’m the classic case of loving Mademoiselle on others but not able to stand it on myself, so hoping Gabrielle will work on me.

Totally agree, minus the patch. I tried a sample last week and it started off so sweet I almost had to scrub (it was humid that day) but then it settled down. I think they really could have named it Coco Mademoiselle L’eau.

The sweetness could be a killer – although I’ve had good luck with the No. 5 L’eau, so maybe?? At any rate, will be picking up a new Coco EDT for fall this year in a return to an old favorite!

About to go for my run (telling the world so I WILL go, right? Yes, I will.), but afterwards I am going to put on a dab of Bois de Paradis body cream. Cooler here today and BdP sounds good.

I would have Korean street food waffles – with ice cream – if I could. But I think it will more likely be yogurt with berries from the Farmers market. Also delish.

when I was a kid my parents took me to an annual carnival/fair in a very tiny town in PA and my favorite treat to eat was a waffle /ice cream stand…they made the waffles from scratch and they were pipping hot which made the ice cream soft and melted…delicious!

Chiming in to say that Korean food is fantastically good – my favorites are Bo Ssam and Bibimbap. I appreciate any dining experience that starts with an array of small dishes being set on the table as soon as my butt hits the dining chair.

Also gotta say, if you’re cooking for a crowd, Bo Ssam is a great choice. I use the recipe from The Bitten Word, which is an adaptation of David Chang’s. It’s always a hit.

    Good morning Y’all….

Wearing ELdO Fils de Dieu today, and enjoying it immensely! Good stuff!

Yesterday I had an apt in downtown Atlanta, so I took advantage and went perfume sniffing at Neiman’s and Saks. WOW!! I smelled By Killian, Byredo, Agonist, and all kinds of things I don’t normally have access to. The reps were all STINGY with samples, despite me saying that I’d never buy a bottle without sampling it first. Anyhoo…my favorite from yesterday was MFK’s Baccarat 540 Extrait. BEAUTIFUL! $425 though? Never gonna happen….. :)

lordie, I remember the days when you would walk into a dept store and the SAs (or perfume models as they used to call them) would practically throw a bunch of samples at you, knowing that if you liked one you would be back to purchase full bottles. I think having samples for sale online has put an end to that.

and, my dear, you get a HUGE enabler pin for steering me towards PHLUR fragrances! Have been loving Olmsted & Vaux due to the numerous compliments I have received while wearing it…such a perfect citrus summer scent with creamy undertones!

It started out cool this am so chose Geisha Vanilla Hinoki for today.
Speaking of waffles, we ate at a place in Bushwick, Brooklyn last Friday called the Arrogant Swine which is pulled pork, smoked pig of all kinds housed in a huge old wearhouse or car garage. Their “thing”, though, is mac n cheese which is then pressed in a waffle iron and served with a spicy cheese dip. What will they think of next!? For dessert we shared the sweet potato waffle with some sort of spiced, buttery maple syrup. Fun!

I haven’t been out there in a while but this might help. I’ve eaten at Biang before, and it’s really good and satisfying except for the reflux, lol. It’s oily and spicy noodles with different meats, mostly.
And the 7 train is totally fine and always populated.

Well, 21 years ago not everywhere was safe. But I lived off the 7 for a couple years recently and also take it out to Mets games. Never any problems EXCEPT there were 2 winters where they were doing track work so it wasn’t going to Manhattan on many weekends! It was a royal drag. So might be good to check the MTA website shortly before you plan to see whether there’s full service from Manhattan to Flushing.

Don’t know much about Asian beaity shops but this place is hugely popular if you’re into day spas-hot baths, steam, saunas etc and they usually have Groupons for it-it’s not fancy/new agey. It’s not right off the 7-requires additional bus ride. I think they also have a shuttle bus from somewhere.

I was just in Chinatown, Flushing last month because my dentist referred me to an endodontis in that area for a root canal (she was excellent!). As you know is very populated and I would say is safe. I have been there a couple of times and I usually get vegetables and fruits from supermarkets in the area. I have not eaten in any restaurant, but people say the food is pretty good. I have not paid attention to stores names since I move very fast. Just grab and go. I cannot stand the crowds. I take the 7 train frequently to get to work, sometimes even late at night to connect with the E or F train to reach home and also when we attend the US Open and no problems at all. You should be ok!

Thanks perfumelover 67! I practically lived on the 7 train for the early part of my life but I know how the city is constantly changing (I remember what Long Island City was like in the early 1980s!) so I did not want to put younger family member in an unsafe situation…but it sounds great and definitely doable! She did all the research herself after her visit to Koreatown in NYC but did ask me if Flushing was safe as she is aware that certain areas of NY are not. I think we will definitely explore when we can get down there….probably around her bday!

I am in testing mode today, too. Fumerie is having a swap next week and so I’m trying Molinard Ambre. I got this in a swap and I am realizing that I don’t care for amber as the centerpiece of a perfume. Etro Ambre is already listed for the swap and I am selling my Alahine parfum. So far I get a whopping lavender note from Ambre, and a fair bit of powder.

Hey, National Waffle Day? I unknowingly participated this morning, as I had a Belgian waffle (which, I must admit, was practically drowned in syrup).

Inspired by mayfly yesterday, I’m wearing AG Quel Amour! today. Looking forward to reading everyone’s back-to-school choices tomorrow.

Hello, NST. No back to school connection for me–I’m in No. 22, and loving it all over again. It’s the prettiest, girliest thing, all soft tones and airy floating ribbons of flowers and sandalwood. I chose it today for its uncomplicated loveliness, because at three o’clock we’re going to collect Dakkie’s ashes, and I find I don’t want “interesting” or “edgy” or animalic or anything even slightly difficult or cerebral. “Pretty” will do just fine.

Alexander is racing around with one of my socks in his mouth. He has mastered the art of clambering into the laundry basket even though it has a lid, and he emerges in triumph with his prey. I don’t mind his towing the sock around and killing it thoroughly from time to time, but I drew the line when he “captured” a bra a couple of days ago. Of the three littles, it is Titus who notices perfume the most. He loves all sandalwood scents, and strops against my wrist and dribbles when I wear them. He seems to quite like leather too, but definitely doesn’t care for citrus. I suppose the thing about citrus was predictable. They all LOVE pegs, quite the favourite toy, so hanging out the washing might be a trial this weekend because almost every peg I own has been captured after vigorous pursuit, subdued and put into captivity under the fridge. Another weekend job: shift the fridge and liberate the pegs. I definitely haven’t got enough left to hang out a single small load of laundry.

Must beetle off: some marking awaits me, and other thrills no doubt. Be well, all.

      RIP Dakkie.

I just spent some time reading through your posts over the past 1.5 weeks to figure out the story. I’m so, so sorry for your loss, and so happy you have three boisterous kittens to keep you intact. The death of any pet is a blow, and it’s always sad when someone loses a pet on NST, but your stories made me fall in love with Dakkie, and his death is probably the first on NST to make me cry. Hug those kittens extra-tight tonight for me, please.

Episode 4 of Back to School. in episode 3, our hero stumbled across an old parchment with a clock key and the strange message “Sequere latrone MLXIX” – but what could “follow with a thief 1069 mean?

SOTD is Etat Libre d’Orange “Archives 69”. Our hero’s heart misses a beat as inspiration strikes – “but surely the M is misplaced? Sequere latronem LXIX – follow the thief 69. Of course, that makes no sense either…” – but his voice trails off. and he is bounding up the stairs to the library already. Because suddenly it does make sense. He’s admired the old stopped clock with the stern motto “Procrastination is the Thief of Time” since he got here. Right at the end of shelf 60 to 69 in the Archives. A minute’s winding with the long lost key and time, so long a prisoner, is set free with a sudden whirring of cogs and a breath of camphor. The hour strikes, a hidden drawer slides open, there is a glimpse of blueprints, old naval charts, ancient vials of curious spices and dried flowers…But as he reaches for them, he realises too late he is not alone. A tattooed hand clamps over his face, the smell of camphor flares… and darkness.

    Top: mandarin, pink pepper CO2 and paprika;
    Mid: incense, orchid and plum;
Base: musk, patchouli, benzoin and camphor.

This is an interesting scent, and I like it without loving it or wanting to own it.

Today I’m back in Mousse de Chene from my Le Labo city exclusives sample box. It goes on as a sort of power scent but that calms way down and it is just pretty pretty. My brother and I went this afternoon with my mom to check out options for assisted vs. independent living in our area. There was a moment when she got teared up about it but on the whole she’s pretty stoic and determined. She keeps trying to give us stuff though or have us take things we want from her home. That’s painful! It made me worry about my own future and what the options will be like for me in 20 or 30 years. Many of my friends are now dealing with the pain of having a child leave for college, but this pain on the other side of life is also rather daunting. We are luckier than most in that she is well enough off to afford it (touch wood), but it’s still just so hard. I’m lobbying for the apartment vs. assisted living because if she has her own apartment she can get a cat!!

The decisions you’re making are very difficult, but you are so fortunate that they can be made in a relatively relaxed way, and that you can take the time you need to be at peace with them.

I can say from hard experience that the way you’re going about it is vastly better than waiting until it’s an urgent situation, which is where we were with my mom a few years ago.

I’ll say a prayer for you and your family that you’ll be happy and secure with the decisions when you are ready to make them! ????

Fwiw, take as much as you are able from your mom. It will take a huge burden off her shoulders. My mom is probably the same age and she wants to find a “loving home” for the things she loves. Most likely, we’ll all be in that same situation in the future.

I think Lucas’s review, in which he suggested that it was wonderful but overpriced, is probably right, but it would be great in a decant or split. I got a bottle as I was in Europe for work and 1) it’s cheaper there and 2) it was a work-trip I’m exhausted splurge. Also, even though I tend not to like opaque bottles, this one is really pretty. Silly things.

Back to school in Perfumery 101: Classics: Chanel No 19 spray cologne, worn this a.m. and now worn off.

Staying on theme with Testing. I’ve been craving fruitchoulis lately and pulling out everything I can think of that might qualify. Today is Gucci Guilty Black and Tokyo Milk Tainted Love. Both qualify but neither is scratching the itch. I remember Tainted Love being a silllage bomb but I’m not getting much from it – maybe because my sample is close to 10 years old? The Gucci has a massive presence, however.

    SotD = Geisha Vanilla Hinoki

GVH is both energizing and calming, a nice balance for a very busy Thursday.

I spent some time sniffing around the perfume counters yesterday. I was due to pick up family members at the airport, but their arrival was delayed. To pass the time I drove to the nearby shopping mall. I think it was Saks that had the Dior Privee line. The sweet SA offered to make me a sample. I hadn’t tried any of them so I guessed and asked for La Colle Noire. I like the association with the chateau, I think place-inspired scents are romantic. The scent is very pretty but nothing to write home about.

I also enjoyed a big spritz of Diorissimo edp on my arm. So beautiful, especially in the top notes. The shopping bag I had looped over that arm still smells nice today.

Anyway, busy Thursday begone! I’m looking forward to sitting down and reading everyone’s comments.

Nice! On me, it smells like equal parts orange blossom and tobacco. It pretty much stays the same to me from beginning to end, moderate sillage and sticks around for anlong time. Of course it could. E. Ecause I used 10 spritzes from my 20 mL La Goutte Parfumee.

I left the office late. It sucks that the late train was delayed by 15 minutes. And the train station was exuding Eau de Sh-t.
