Thursday scent of the day 8/17

Posted by Robin on 17 August 2017 224 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I am staying cheerful and bright with Hermès Eau de Néroli Doré. Posting will be light again today and I will start catching up tomorrow.

Reminder: 8/18 will be Fugly Friday. That's the opposite of bottle porn Friday...wear a perfume you own (or just like) despite the ugly bottle. Suggested by Nebbe.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Was thinking of wearing Eau de Neroli Dore this morning but in the end I decided on Anatole Lebreton Grimoire. This resinous, incensy lavender beauty felt more suitable for the fog we had this morning.

I’m going to have problems finding a perfume to match our community project tomorrow.

Me too. If a bottle’s unattractive, I just don’t buy it, however good the contents. I can’t think of a single bottle I own in any size that I would consider ugly, let alone fugly. I’ll have to give the collection a good hard stare and see if anything displeases me.

I think I might be able to dig out a decant of a perfume that originally comes in fugly bottles. If I really like the perfume but the bottle is dreadful, decants seem like a perfect solution :)

I tend to completely avoid perfumes in ugly bottles – don’t look at them, don’t sample them. That said, I have a few that I really dislike but not enough to get in the way of enjoying their contents.

I just couldn’t care less if the bottle is ugly, as long as the juice is good. That said, I do love really beautiful designs.

      Such a great name/word, Grimoire!

Is the lavender soapy? Or more earthy?

I liked a few of the other Breton offerings. Forgot their names. One that was very green….and a musky/furry one.

Lavender is herbal, kind of medicinal here.

Grimoire means spell book in old french.

I am reading a book about the history of grimoires. Its fascinating.

Working my way through the Atelier Cologne sample palette, in order. Vanille Insensée has a surface resemblance to SL Un Bois Vanille but I found it cloying after a while (whereas UBV never is): a couple of spritzes of Clémentine California on top soon fixed that. Post-shower I decided to try Santal Carmin, and it may not be very carmine but it does has a wonderful raw-sandalwood smell that’s a big improvement over the puddingy synthetic woods that are in everything these days. (I mean, it may still be synthetic, but they’ve done a good job disguising it.)

Robin invented the term “wood pudding” (https://nstperfume.com/2017/01/24/5-perfumes-wood-pudding/) to refer to that increasingly large category of scents that meld wood, usually sandalwood or cedar, with a thick creamy-dairy quality that isn’t sweet enough to be gourmand. I think Javanol is the synthetic sandalwood that really highlights that creaminess you smell in everything nowadays (but I’ve never smelled it pure so I don’t know for certain).

Are you beginning to feel a bit better Robin? I love Néroli Doré, plus it comes in a beautiful bottle.

My SOTD is Fleurs des Comores by MPG, it’s a gorgeous scent but MPG has some of the ugliest bottles on the market. FdC sits somewhere between Vanilia and Songes.

I just got home, and luckily too busy to think about it right now! We said goodbye yesterday afternoon and my husband and I did have a lovely evening afterwards, helped along by good food and a few drinks — I have not cried yet, but I’m sure I will!

Thanks for asking, it’s been a hard couple days and now I will get back into routine and stop whining :-)

And agree about MPG! I might still wear Jeune Homme tomorrow.

I don’t have children but I get it. It’s tough to let go and not worry and not miss him. So I don’t think you are whining. I remember my mother was in tears when I left for France at 18, and she still had one child at home.

    Robin, you smell absolutely perfect.

I’m in Pacifica Sandalwood, again. So glad I made this impulse purchase as it’s become one of my favorites. I’d buy a backup, but Pacifica solids tend to last me such a long time that it would probably go rancid before I have the chance to use it.

I don’t think it would go rancid. I stocked up on solids of several d/c favorites years ago and they still smell good. I would stock up as the solids are now d/c.

I like it, but maybe it would be better for fall and winter, not summer in Texas. I have only worn LADDM once, so I might do a side by side comparison. As I understand it ACDD was intended to be a less intense version of LADDM.

Trying out NVC Rahele today thanks to Petunia. Liking it more than I thought I would-I think I imagined it would be sweeter and more bland but it’s really lovely. Reminds me both of vintage fruity chypres and elements of Bottega Veneta, especially in the drydown.

I bought mine at parfumaria.com, a dutch online store that ships world wide – if I recall correctly And they have an english site as well. (No affiliation).

If I decide on a bottle I can send you a sample. You are in EU mainland, right? I’ll keep you updated….
But at the moment I am a bit tight on money. I ordered too many samples. Hahaha argh. Need to find a dutch or european community for swapping I guess, but on the other hand i am quite busy already and I need to focus more on other non-perfume stuff.

        Papillon is great brand!
I tried Anubis and Salome last year. They are both great.

As for Dryad being mild/quiet. I had two sprays from a sample vial, so maybe that impacts sillage and longevity…

Also, i sampled a few bold scents this week, this could mess wih my perspective on what is mild. ;)

Off topic: Any curly girls have insights they can share with a newbie? My hair has undergone a transformation over the past few months. After a lifetime of straight hair – it now wants to be curly. What?! I’ve been reading up on how to work with it but there’s so much information (and products) out there, it’s overwhelming.

I do have some tips and products I use. My hair is naturally curly, and though I straighten it often, I do wear it curly a lot. I wash and then comb it out. I add a little styling cream (I am using the one in the link below, I think it’s great; Robin, I don’t know how to make the link shorter or prettier lol)- maybe a dime size amount, and then also just a small amount of mousse of some sort (I’m currently using Aveda Phomollient). I flip over and dry with a diffuser.

Welcome to the club! My hair also changed from straight to curly back in my adolescence. My biggest tip would be treat those curls delicately, don’t overcleanse and trying to keep moisture in is key. I like some of the DevaCurl stuff (no-poo & curl cream). Lots of good tips on the interwebs…
Have fun with your new curls.

Yessing as well, and will add that the “curly girl” movement (you can google for tips) helped me to transition from frizz to coiled spirals when I had long hair. I have a huge long list of things I did to take care of it, reflecting the ridiculous amount of time I spent on it. (It’s short now and I currently wear it straight.)

          Brief recap of the game-changers:
          – Stop using shampoo. Use a cleansing conditioner (or regular conditioner to wash.) This also means you have to stop using silicone-based products.
-Don’t rinse your hair under the shower head. Put a plastic container in the shower and pour water over your head gently instead, massaging the conditioner out.
-Don’t use towels on your hair. Use a pillowcase or t-shirt. And don’t let either touch your head until you’ve loaded it up with product. I did the LOC method (leave-in, oil, cream,) pinned the curls on my crown, then gently wrapped my hair with a pillowcase. It looked best if I slept on it that way, letting it dry overnight.
-If you do dry it, use a diffuser. Gently place your locks into the diffuser, then smash it into your head. Do this all over until it’s dry. Don’t move blowing air around your head – it causes frizz.
-Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase.

          Have fun! ;)

What finally worked for my curly hair was getting long layers. Don’t let anyone talk you into “thinning” that only causes more frizz
Also, don’t wash it so much. I wash mine twice a week. Once you’ve added any product, try to not touch or retouch your hair.

My hair is an awful combination of wavy in some places and straight in others. When I want to wear it wavy, I’ve had some luck with using a very wide-toothed comb to comb it out in the shower (no combing after that), drying with a microfiber headwrap, LOC method, then an “air-dry” styling cream (I think the one I got is L’Oreal).

I’m in 10 Corso Como today. Smells great, but unlike many on here, I am NOT a fan of the bottle lol.

I know you all are sick of hearing about my move, but y’all seriously….I am so tired. Trying to wrap up work and real estate deals (I work in government contracting and am also a real estate agent) is starting to wear me down. BUT, tomorrow is my last day at my current employer (where I’ve been for 7 years) and they are having a going away party for me today. I have all next week off to run errands and such, then we leave the following week.

The good news is: I already have a job in New Mexico! I got an offer yesterday! I never expected to find one so fast, so I am thrilled. :D

Rain before 7, done by 11. My dad has said this for years and it holds true about 90% of the time. I was awake at 3 am and there was a gentle rain falling. It’s cleared and now the sun is peeking through. There’s still about 85% humidity in the air so it’s a perfect day for Atelier Bois Blonds.
I don’t have any fugly bottles in my small collection, so I think I will fail at this project.????

Morning, all. I’m having a sleepless night, worrying about Dakkie. I can’t help him by worrying, but I can’t stop myself. I love that cat a great deal, and his suffering is painful to watch. Crunch time is 6 p.m. tonight, for blunderbuss treatment: more antibiotics, steroids, vitamins, the whole caboodle. Then we wait and hope. Thank you all so much for your kind words yesterday. I wanted to reply, but between vets and students and sone mere but urgent STUFF, I just never got back to NST.

It’s only 3 a.m. here, so I haven’t showered or dressed yet, but I am in the last remnants of Loukhoum, which I sprayed on my wrists as I went to bed. I used to adore this, but for the last few wears, it’s reminded me of a generic scented candle, which I am sure is not the effect that was sought by the perfumer. It makes me want to spray liberally with Cristalle, Assam of India, Narcisse Bleu, 4711–any, all– to counter the cloying creaminess. I hope I grow to like it again eventually., or it will be relegated to the bottom shelf as one of my more expensive mistakes.

It’s my Friday, and I’ve been wondering all week what to do about the project. I haven’t got any perfumes in really ugly bottles, but I have got the original Omnia, which isn’t ugly, exactly, but is annoying and pointlessly complicated and awkward, and therefore silly. I think I’ll submit “silly” instead of ugly, and wear the pretty perfume in the irritating container. Hope that gets me some points for effort!

    Be well, all

I’m wearing Lou Lou at the moment. I think I might wear Gucci Rush to work though. Still no resolution with the awful stupid thing I’m going through, and Rush, being one of my bad ass scents feels more appropriate. I don’t think either of these bottles are ugly but I really don’t care for the plastic.

Love Lou Lou but also love Rush…and it might qualify for fugly bottle although I have to say perhaps dysfunctional might be a better word…several years ago my full size bottle at the time started leaking rather than spraying and it had been left on my desk at work overnight…when I came in the next morning it was all over my desk and at the time I shared an office with a perfume grinch…needless to say she had a FIT at the scent (“stench” is what she called it) that was coming from my side of the room..I did not feel too bad as she was an overall not nice person ;)

Wearing SL Vitiver Oriental from a decant (thanks LisaD!). Wore Bolshevixen by SmellBent to bed last night and liked it so much I went to the SmellBent site and bought a bunch of 4ml spray samples of available scents. Sadly, Bolshevixen must be discontinued since I didn’t see it on the site.

True Confession: I had to buy a pair of jeans in a bigger size yesterday☹️So disappointed in myself! So, I’m going to pick up a bike and get my A$$ in gear! I’m looking at buying one of those pet trailers for T-Rex (Yes, I will be that woman!). I can train her to trot with me for a bit but it’s too hot to expect her to keep up with me for miles. It has one of those bright orange flags that sticks up in the back! Lordy, who’d a thought me and my younger bad A$$ mountain biking, curb hopping self would be relegated to a “comfort” bike with a dog trailer!!

I haven’t been on a bike in a long time. I started spin classes after the last time I crashed and burned, which resulted in a retinal detachment and 4 surgeries to save my vision in that eye. I’m I a little nervous????

I know exactly what you mean- just came back from the post office and there was an elderly (60’s-ish) couple that were huffing and puffing like a freight train. They walked from their vehicle to the counter, probably less than 50 steps, and they were both grunting and blowing like Old Faithful. I really hope they had a rescue inhaler and o2 in the car…

My “Summer of Gi” officially starts today (after entertaining family for a week). Four glorious weeks of total freedom before I start my new job and I’m so excited!

Vetiver Fatal for today. Not exactly fugly but the Atelier bottles do seem very utilitarian to my eye.

Ha! another house twin…and I happen to like the simplicity of the Atelier bottles…the 6.8 oz one is thick glass and feels massive in my tiny hands and i like that .

I only have a tiny 30 ml bottle. Kind of cute as all little things seem to be but maybe the cap & label seem disproportionate?

Oh yes, there is a big difference (at least to me!) between the 30ml bottles and the 200 ml bottles….even the caps are different.

    SotM = Masque Milano Montecristo

This one I’ll call my scent of the morning because I’m not sure I can wear it all day. I sniffed the vial, then spritzed a bit, and my first thought was “wow, animals!” No barnyard aromas, rather it’s the smell of an animal’s den, very woody and aromatic, not dirty though not quite clean either.

Intriguing, and I dare say sexy. The name makes me think of pirates. Aye, if I were a pirate I’d wear Montecristo.

I hope you will get to sniff Montecristo. The Masque Milano scents have strong personality. They’re either a hard no or a big yes for me. I like Romanza the best so far and will wear it again.

I’m in 9 sprays of Le Galion Iris today, (from their mini bottle). Very nice, but I have many “nice” fragrances, I guess a lot of florals, and I want to round out my collection with something different. Any suggestions?

We decided last minute To go to the Tom Petty concert tonight. I plan on wearing Bendelirious!

An overcast morning here so I wanted something cheerful and sunny. Jour d’Hermes fits the bill.

Insofar as owning fugly bottles, I find they aren’t so much fugly as uninspired. Like the Piguet black bottles, the old Nicolai square bottles, even Malle’s bottles–I find them boring. Lou Lou’s burgundy and turquoise color scheme is odd but not fugly. The only bottle I own that makes me want to tear my hair out isn’t fugly but infuriating, so I’ll save it for tomorrow.

Fugly Friday here and oh how I loathe the cheap metallic silver plastic on Angel Muse. Should have been named Angel’R’Us as it reminds me as half the outer-space cowboy/warrior/fighter junk that littered the floor here ten years ago. Or ‘Angels and Cream’ for the sex-toy , battery operated self-pleasure object associations. Poorly fitted plastic caps score high on my most hated list (Ostara), big clunks of bottles are a no-buy (omnia)… But angel muse silver plastic ugh…must prise off. And Plum take that smirk off your face…that ridiculously heavy big brass ball you call a cap….

Have been testing Ineke’s alphabet series, but not in order. Today it’s Field Notes from Paris. The name is apropos, and I like the grassy scent. Don’t expect it to stay with me long, though. The tiny boxes in this set of 8 are lovely, and each little sample is rolled into a bright piece of tissue. Charming.

A dreary gray day here, and I am in vintage Jolie Madame, another one where whenever I wear it I’m like “why don’t I wear this every day again?” This particular bottle is a miniature gold rectangle and for some reason the top notes smell like lavender instead of violet to me… but the drydown is pure JM and in its 7th hour now it seems to just keep getting better.

    SOTD is Carthusia “Mediterraneo”.

    Top: mint, lemon, litsea cubeba, eucalyptus, thyme and bergamot;
    Mid: jasmine, cardamom, wild flowers and mandarin;
    Base: musk.

Very nice and fresh. Performance poor to indifferent. Very tired today after “ein Bier” somehow turned into “viel Wein”. :^s

Giving my sample of Zoologist’s Dragonfly another spin on the dance floor. It went onto my wishlist after the first test drive, but today I’m thinking it’s sadly a no-go. While I love some of its smoother notes (rice, musk, iris, heliotrope, sandalwood….gorgeous), today the often problematic peony note is going its usual shrill direction on me, lending a sharpness on top of the soft base that was more prominent the other day. That darn peony doesn’t seem to be dissipating in the late drydown, which makes me sad, as it’s an otherwise lovely scent. Why is it that one of my favorite flowers is always a disaster when rendered as a perfume note :-( Boo.

Hello, NST! Today is also Black Cat Appreciation Day, which I was reminded of by a post from Simon’s Cat. One of my cats is black, and she is loaded with personality.

SOTD = The Des Vignes, from a sample that Nancyleandros so generously sent to me. It is very pretty, surprisingly refreshing, and it survived an afternoon walk in the heat. Good stuff!

Another busy day at work, but such is life. I suppose I’d rather have too much to do than not enough.

It was cool and cloudy when I walked to work this morning, so I chose Marni. I’ll be polishing off my sample today. I plan to buy a mini bottle at some point because it’s so cute and the perfume smells pretty good.

Yesterday I finished off a sample too! It was TF Jasmin Rouge.

I went with DeProfundis today. The bottle is the opposite of this week’s fugly bottle theme. I do have a contender lined up for tomorrow. Although, It’ll be a little disconcerting if someone chooses a bottle that I think is pretty. This should be interesting.

Been wearing Berdoues Assam of India all week, which is like the opposite of a fugly bottle. I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do for this challenge! I only have maybe half a dozen full bottles of anything, the worst of which I would describe as unremarkable, but definitely not fugly. I do have a huge stock of decants and samples, so I’ll have to look up some of the bottles and see if I can find something appropriately hideous.

Wow! Assam of India all week? I wore it the entire summer last year so why am i surprised? and it was a blind buy for me BECAUSE of the bottle.

I have nothing that I would consider hideous so I may opt out of the project today and just wear what I want.

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

I needed some spine strengthening today because I have way too much work to do. The work is still there…

Another horrible event in Barcelona. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

    Commuting Woes No. 381:

A guy with a few extra rolls and I made a beeline for a 2-seater. Surprisingly, we fit …until three-quarters of the way to the last stop when he decided to use me as a pillow. Seriously? I had to “adjust” my tote bag to express my displeasure so he budged, a little.
