Monday scent of the day 8/7

Posted by Robin on 7 August 2017 231 Comments

Serge Lutens Berbers Headscarf

Just another Manic Monday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Serge Lutens Dent de Lait (review coming up this week, possibly tomorrow).

Reminder: on 8/11, wear a fragrance with vetiver, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: image shows the Serge Lutens Berbers Headscarf (it is folded so you are only seeing a corner of it; "Snake, tortoise, scorpion… silk with a sting in the tail"), which is currently unavailable but I think was $400 when it was in stock.

On this cool and rainy day I just could not get myself to wear any vetiver (which is not my favorite note to begin with anyway). So I started with Vanille Insensee soap in the shower (from Arielle Shoshana Scented Luxuries which has an excellent selection of body products) followed by B & BW Snowflakes and Cashmere lotion for the sweet pipe fragrance I was craving and topped off with Pacifica’s Mexican Cocoa which is all about marzipan, spices and dry cocoa…why oh why did you discontinue this one Pacifica???????

I wonder if you’d like D600 from Carner. It’s a not so vetivery iris. Just sayin’.

My best friend LOVES that one…but I haven’t tried it yet…I do have a few vetivers that I enjoy- Pacifica’s Tibetan Mountain Temple, Berdoues Grand Cru Scorza di Sicilia and Dame Passionfruit, Orange Blossom & Vetiver….I just wasn’t in the mood this morning…I needed a ‘comfort’ scent :)

Berdoues one is to me more like a summer citrus rather than vetiver or woods

Agree…100 percent…but it is the closest I can come to wearing a vetiver fragrance :)

Same with the Dame…it is much less about the vetiver to my nose…

and Tibetan Mountain Temple is a sweet gingery incense but vetiver is in there so it “would” count towards the community project…

It is on the sweet side but my wonky nose also picks up tobacco which isn’t listed in the notes but nonetheless it is there for me and I love it!

I love Pacifica’s Mexican Cocoa candles. It’s a shame they’re discontinuing that scent. It would’ve been so great as a solid perfume. I’ll likely join you in Tibetan Mtn Temple later this week.

It’s a mild mild Monday so I’m in Lavande 44 from Rania J. Such a great and naturally smelling lavender.

Not really a fan of SL or their New bottles but I’ll be curious about your review.

I’m coming up with a new review soon as well. Sample I tried during weekend deserves some attention.

La Rose de Rosine. Lovely, but I need another rose like I need more hair, or whatever. It’s seriously wonderful though, not a masterpiece but just quietly attractive.

If I were condemned to wear only one rose perfume it would be Paris YSL, as it’s the one I have the strongest emotional attachment to. As it is I love lots of different kinds of rose perfumes.
I love rose-violets (Drôle de Rose), dark dramatic roses (Rossy, Rose Poivrée) spicy roses ( HdP 1876, Mohur (extrait de parfum)) abstract roses like Nahéma and light roses like Ecume de Rose, Un Zest and Rose Splendide.

Annick Goutal Mandragore is my SOTD, and I am drinking a cup of jasmine green tea.

I got in late last night from a short, but fun Miami trip. I did some perfume sampling/shopping. I sampled so many, but my souvenir money went to a bottle of Santa Maria Novella Melograno and a bottle of Hermes Galop. I’ve been loving Galop for a long time, and I’m so happy to have a bottle :)

        SOTD is Tenue de Soirée!

Now drinking a hot cuppa Inka ( a wannabe instant coffee) and watching the rain come down while the kids nap. Mid morning meditation.

Finally got back home yesterday afternoon from our almost 2 weeks in Hawaii… after 24.5 hours of traveling or sitting in airports. (Whew. I’m tired. Also still trying to adjust my body clock to the 6 hour time difference.)

Re: The CEO’s job interview, we are waiting. His interviews went well both on Kauai and with the university people in Honolulu, but there are two other candidates who will interview this week. As always, the job *sounds* great until you get a closer look at the specific situation and the personalities you’d be working with, not to mention the specific compensation package. In this case, hubby speculates that the position would be very susceptible to “job creep,” in that it’s supposed to be straight-up Extension agent, but the previous agent was promoted from a research position and continued to fulfill that function instead of traditional Extension duties (until his suicide in the office, which fact the committee described simply as “he died” YIKES and which we only found out because The CEO’s friend who is the Extension agent on one of the other islands told him). The past three research techs were not replaced when they retired or left, so there’s no one to do the research stuff. Also, the agent who is responsible for the 4H programs is set to retire in two years, and The CEO is concerned that he would in the future be required to combine duties for three different jobs. Besides which, the interim dean of the department at UH is not going to make any hiring decisions until the new dean arrives in September.

On the positive side, we spent several days on Kauai and Maui, which are both very beautiful. Great experience even if nothing comes of the job interview.

Nice to be back home and wearing Silences.

Lots for you to think about but still sounds like it might be a great opportunity for you two and wouldn’t be a forever commitment. Thx for the update. I guess it’s esp interesting/helpful to follow someone else’s big life changes as I feel quite caught in the midst of our own (just moved back to Pacific NW after 25 years in a wonderful place in Colorado for new job for husband).

Your travel day sounds utterly exhausting, and Silences absolutely needed. Is there a way to make travel back-and-forth more direct and shorter? That’s the kind of miserable day I associate with traveling to another hemisphere, not another state (!!)

SOTD is FM Vetiver Extraordinaire, which is the antithesis of the Hippie Dippie Trippy Clothing Vibe- Love the contrast ????

Happy Monday! Grey, cool rainy day! I am wearing Johann Maria Farina cologne. I found half bottle of it in one of my mother’s drawers this past weekend. She said that that bottle has been with her for ages. She remembered splashing me with some when I was a kid and that my grandmother used to wear it frequently 8-). I just remember my grandmom’s love for perfumes, but wearing them only for especial occasions. I also remember one in particular that smelled of coffee and it was delish. But those days I was too young and I was not paying attention to names. I used just to enjoy when she rarely spritzed something on me. Anyway, the Johan Maria Farina is in great shape, citrusy and refreshing and I like it a lot. I could not kidnap the bottle from mom. She wanted to keep it for sentimental reasons, but I was able to make a 10 ml decant of it. Nice discovery.

Sel de vetiver, from a sample.

The sprayer on the vial was broken.
So i just dabbed on what leaked out of it. I suspect this changed longevity and sillage somewhat (in a bad way…i could hardly smell it after four hours).
But i remember this scent feeling more glorious when sprayed.

Anyways, it hardly satisfies my vetiver craving this way.
But it’s a very nice summer scent that gets its freshness and airyness from the salt and some citrus. Vetiver plays the grounding part here.

I had a moment of weakness too, Lovestosmellgood. I ordered a bottle of Alambar by Laboratorio Olfattivo. There was a sample in my Sens Unique box and I was smitten. But you have to hear the overblown marketing blurb for it…”Everything begins with a dream… The dream to capture a divine diva’s golden tears in a perfume that could work magic on the skin. Thus comes Alhambra… a perfume in which warm notes intensely surround the entire olfactory pyramid leaving, at the end, a trail of pure Amber. With its heightened concentration of elegance wrapped in exotic arabesques, this distillation of Amber excites the senses and soothes the skin”. I especially like the part about the heightened concentration of elegance wrapped in exotic arabesques.

Commando now, but planning to wear Fat Electrician soon. Yay for vetiver week!

Sidenote: the other day I sampled TF Oud Minerale and liked it very much. Clean oud (which the oud aficionados will sniff at :P) + salt + ambergris + seaweed + mineral/flint + incense/smoke = quite wonderful. The mineral/flint aspect reminds me of the opening of Alaia and the mineral notes of Chablis.

I liked Oud Minerale too… it’s not terribly oud-y at all, less so than Oud Wood (which I adore). Crisp and mineral-y and summer-y too.

Donatella forgive me, but a bottle just jumped into my hands while I was sniffing at Nordstrom. These frisky bottles.

Frisky Indeed! I envision a bottle making my way in the near future.

I had sniffed Oud Wood in my early perfume-love days and wasn’t very impressed with it, but I retried it while testing Oud Minerale and liked it very much. I need to give it a proper try.

Today I’m wearing Pacifica Sandalwood in the solid perfume.

On Saturday evening I went to a “discovery party” at Indigo Perfumery and it was so fun! There were snacks and mix-your-own champagne “cocktails,” all of the perfumes were available to sample, and there was no pressure to buy. I wound up making a somewhat unexpected discovery in Papillon Tobacco Rose. I love tobacco scents, but I usually avoid rose, so I was quite surprised at how much I liked this one. I set the sample strip in my bedroom and it’s been scenting the whole room for the past couple of days. I’ll definitely be ordering a sample of that one.

      House twins!

I was just looking at both of the coffee as well as the tobacco scents listed on fragrantica (I guess the cool weather has me craving these two notes)…curious, have you ever tried any of the Demeter tobacco offerings?

I have not. I’m curious about many of the Demeter scents but IIRC, their shipping rate is a bit high even for sample orders, which has deterred me.

Right now they are having 25 percent off for new customers and shipping is free with 50 dollar orders…at least that was what the website reported when I last looked :)

I have sampled quite a few from several care packages sent to me by my best friend and they are quite good for the money…some are quirky and fun….definitely worth exploring ….

          what are your favorite tobaccos?

I haven’t tried too many tobaccos yet, but the two that come to mind first are actually very similar: The Body Shop Red Musk and an oil by an indie perfumer on Etsy called Sweet Tea Apothecary – the oil is called Archibald. I like Burberry London (for men) as a tobacco scent on others, but it’s a little too strong for me.

I’m pretty lazy this morning, I haven’t even gotten in the shower yet. Spent yesterday with my parents, checking out one of those YMCA dream houses. The house itself was okay but wasn’t exactly wild about really narrow stairways and lack of space in some areas in the house. Who puts a laundry room on the second floor? It make no sense. Since the basement doesn’t have it’s own entrance, why put a room where one can easily wash their dogs. Dogs seem to like mud and checking out skunks so why put that in the finished basement? I swear that finished basement could be it’s own seperate house.

So I’m sitting in vintage Bal at the moment and will be wearing LDDM after my shower. I’ve been wearing my Tauer’s quite a bit the past week.

Second floor washer and dryer makes sense to me since that is where one usually changes out of clothes to be washed and into clean clothes. The basement should have a space for keeping critters clean.

Today I’m in Diptyque L’Eau de Tarocco. I want to like this, the note list is full of things I like I like (orange, rose, cinnamon, saffron) but this just don’t stay on my skin. It’s like it slides right off. Immediately when I apply it, I get a whiff of orange and cinnamon, and then it’s gone, poof.

I do like it. I get more LOTV than rose. But the ???? is there. I’m taking a small decant with me to CA to wear while I’m there. I think that, Saint Julep, and my OJ Frangipani will be the primary ones. Bringing an empty decant bottle to get some Chanel 5 Eau Premiere from the other sis. She has a bottle but doesn’t love as much as No. 5 itself. So, she’s willing to part with some.

Have missed hanging around here due to the play I’ve been working on being a part of a festival here. But last night came home exhausted and happy & put on some Vetiver Pour Elle just for its own refreshing delights.
A little bit was still with me when I woke up, which is a serious recommendation.
Today is a day off here, and I am going to half-pretend it’s my birthday. (Since it was in the midst of this busy weekend). Can’t wait to note the “hidden vetivers” & not buy them.

I like vetivers in the heat, too, but I find FE as much a gourmand as a vetiver. And a really autumnal gourmand, at that – but maybe in August the vetiver will come out tops.

I think my skin amps the Vetiver and barely get the marshmallow at all. Same thing with Vetiver Tonka where I get no caramel at all and barely any hazelnut where these facets come out a lot more on others.

Starting off vetiver week right with some Vétiver Tonka from myyyyyyy TRAVEL SPRAY!!!! I had a birthday party this weekend, and this incredibly generous gift came from the old friend who turned me into a perfumista some 1.5 years ago. VT is either in my top five or top ten fragrances, depending on the day, and is a great way to start off the week.

Other fragrant presents included some lovely rose hip oil, a cade and lavender candle, and some samples/minis from another budding perfumista friend. This bundle included Victoria’s Secret Bombshell, which smells not at all sexy or like the sugary hot mess I was expecting, but rather like pleasant shampoo, and Ambre Narguilé, which is also in my top five perfumes, so I’m pretty excited about the smelly side of my birthday.

Presents aside, my party was great fun. It’s so wonderful to have so many of my friends together in one room. Many of them didn’t know each other, but had heard of each other; now they’ve finally met!

Monday morning is starting slowly. I’ve done very little work so far (it’s nearly 10). Yaaawwwwn. At least I smell amazing.

Yesterday was the zest of the sun and today is the full-blown vitamin C fizzy orange version, Lush Sun. Simply the most ridiculous perfume in my collection…and that’s saying something. Good for a children’s birthday party, or a hangover…or layered with Coco ( just about every super strength perfume is better when layered with Coco).
Unusually warm weather here yesterday (15C) but we often get a spring dump of snow so no LOTV celebrations just yet!
Looking forward to the Dent du Lait review.

I like the idea of a perfume that is perfect for a children’s birthday party or a hangover.

I wish Lush would release Volume 4 already!

I totally forgot what the theme was for this week. I might have enough vetivers to wear one each day the rest of the week. Don’t know if I will, but I probably could.

So today it’s back to Berdoues samples. Today is Vanira Moorea. It’s.. fine. I mean, it’s vanilla with some citrusy stuff to lighten it up a bit. Right now it’s kind of reminding me of Vanille Incensee, but maybe a bit lighter.

Over the weekend I wore Scorza di Sicilia, which is kind of a boring citrus cologne that promises vetiver and cedar and doesn’t deliver, and Somei Yoshino, which ended up smelling like an air freshener. Actually, I have a Glade (I think) one called White Tea and Lily or something like that, and SY actually smells kind of like it.

So I totally missed the initial post about Dent de Lait and how many SL fragrances are getting discontinued or moved to non-export or whatever, which sounds like basically all of the ones I like. Guess I need to get off my butt and buy the ones I’d been wanting.

I should note that today is one of those days where I can’t quite tell if I’m really just unmoved by the fragrance I’m wearing or if I’m just being grumpy. Or a little of column A and a little of column B.

Better being unmoved than slapped with a mushroom cloud headache, which is what happened to me when I tried the Vanira Moorea. I actually like it, but just can’t wear it. ☹️
I missed the SL discontinuation info too! Where did you see it?

It’s been raining off and on here since late last night, and is a lovely 75 degrees. Aaahhhh, relief.

I’m in LL Iris 39 from the generous Elisa P. This is somewhat like ISM, but it has something a bit crisp in it. Maybe it’s the lime?

I’m tempted to add the drop of ISM I have left and compare them, but I don’t want anything to distract from the experience that is ISM! :)

Maybe it’s the salty note that is standing out on me. It does mellow out considerably after an hour or so, and the ‘edge’ disappears.

SotD = Voleur de Roses from a sample

L’Artisan Parfumeur scents so often appeal to me. VdR is very nice. I wore La Chasse aux Papillons and Oeillet Sauvage yesterday.

I chose Voleur de Roses thinking it is rose + vetiver. Nope, it’s rose + patchouli. Digging through samples with rose + vetiver in mind, what was it I was looking for?

Kicking off vetiver week with my new decant of SL’s Fille en Aiguilles. I’d been looking forward to trying this but it’s not a winner on me – the vetiver note smells very sweet and bubble gum-y. I have the exact same issue with EldO’s Fat Electrician. FM’s Vetiver Extraordinaire, on the other, smells like a “true” vetiver on me. Skin chemistry is such a mystery!

I’m not sure where I stand with vetiver and I haven’t starting exploring my collection to see what I own that has vetiver in it. Surely there’s something but when I think “vetiver” I just remember that I didn’t like Sycamore.

Wearing Molinard Habanita L’Esprit, which I woke up thinking about (and does have vetiver, but is not a Vetiver Perfume.) I’ve worn quite a few perfumes this summer that I’d previously only worn in winter, and had very few misses. This is another one that – surprisingly – works well in both heat and cold.

I got a sample of Bois des Iles edp yesterday. The edt may just be my most worn perfume this summer (after recoiling from it in all seasons for the last couple of years.) It is gorgeous with a much richer, deeper woody note, and very different from the edt. Read this with caution, as I sprayed it last night after being rudely awoken by cramps and was half-asleep, half-drugged, and wearing it over vintage No 5. I wish I had another sample as I’ve only got enough for 1 more wear, but I may need larger decants (i.e. bottles) of both the edt and edp.

It got me thinking this morning, though, that I don’t recall reading any reviews of Les Exclusifs edps on perfume blogs. The only feedback I’ve gotten on the new formulations has been from people reporting here. (Correct me if I’m wrong.) Exclusifs ennui? Or annoyance?

My own opinion on the matter is that Chanel should carry the parfums, edts, and edps side-by-side as they do with their other pillars. I’ve always wondered if that was the plan from the start, but that would necessitate new packaging for the edts when they are brought back, so it’s more likely that this is just my own fantasy.

You know, making them EdPs is to my mind just another variation on reformulation. And everything gets reformulated within a few years, these days. So annoyance isn’t really the write word, but I just think there’s no way to keep up with it all. I can’t re-smell EVERYTHING every couple years, right? I think you just have to assume that if you’re trying a perfume and the review you’re reading is more than a couple years old, what you’re smelling might not be the same as what was reviewed.

(And will add, brands come out with new concentrations all the time. One of us might add a note to an old review if we feel like it, but it doesn’t happen all that often.)

To be clear, I wasn’t singling you out. I realized when testing BdI that I hadn’t heard or read a thing about it.

I think of the Chanels as standalone variants, specifically created and acknowledged to be – and sold concurrently as -different versions of the pillar. No 5, 19, Cristalle and others are sold in parfum, edt, edp. I kind of thought that might be where they were going with the Exclusifs, rather than just the usual tweaking.

Hey, no, I did not think you were! Was just answering for myself. And now I notice I wrote “write” for “right” which is funny.

Cristalle is totally different in EdT and EdP, or at least, it used to be. They were related, but very different. And that is true of many scents that come in more than one concentration: they might smell the same but stronger or weaker, or, they might be quite different. So from my viewpoint, same thing as with the Exclusifs. (Or, I’m not understanding what you’re saying.)

SOTD = Cartier’s Baiser Vole EdP, from the sample stash. I needed something that would cheer me up today… the rainy grey weather where I am at is a total downer.

Kpaint, I did end up hearing more about the TOTAL drama disaster from the convention I was at. It was worse that I had ever imagined. First, a bit of background info. The group I am affiliated with puts on 3 game conventions a year. Two of them have around 2000 attendees. It is done with an ALL volunteer staff. If I stop to think about that, it is rather crazy. An event that has 2000 people, over 4 or 5 days, done with all volunteers???

Anyway, things have been spiraling downward (from my point of view) for at least a couple of years now. Important things are not getting done when they should be. Important information is not getting passed along to the people who should know about it. Lazy and/or incompetent individuals are kept on staff simply because either they are friends of the founder of the convention, or because the Powers That Be don’t have the stomach to fire them. If, Heaven forbid, something goes wrong, feedback is often immediate and public. Morale is in the toilet at the very least, or, more likely, in the sewer. And now it seems that a significant number of the staffers who run various parts of the convention are ready to drop everything and walk away from it all, unless things start to change, and long-standing issues are addressed. Will it happen? TBH, I dunno.

Sorry for the grumpy post, everyone. I guess I needed to get this off my chest.

Oy, it is good to unload. There’s at least one NSTer who can probably give you some tips on convention-related organization. That said, where is the budget? I agree it is crazy to do something of this magnitude with all volunteers. Now, if they are volunteers because they have had satisfying accomplished careers and are now “ladies who lunch” and are independently wealthy (hence, not getting paid), they should be able to find a way to make this work without all the cattiness.

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

It’s got Vetiver! So, very very very busy day and was going to log back in again tonight but I made an executive decision (mine, I am the boss of me) that it can wait until tomorrow.

Jealous of missionista’s encounter over the weekend with a vintage Opium wearer. I got armpits again today.

Have you ever noticed that even the skinniest people can take up more room than a person twice their physical size and weight? Case in point, a family of 3 with very skinny parents and a 6 or 7 year child. They could have sat 3 in a row across from me but the kid decided she wanted to sit across from her parents. Ok. The mom, sitting slightly sideways, kept talking to the dad and left her cheap-looking beaded cross-body purse hanging on the side between me and her. I gestured that she should move her purse to her lap and she did; however, as she kept talking, the bag migrated again to between us. I decided to nudge her and back to her lap went the bag. The kid then decides she wanted to sit on her mom’s lap and was very wiggly. UGH, really, mat this point, I should have either said something or moved away, but goshdarnit people are just so inconsiderate!

I should line up my vetivers for the rest of the week!
