Wednesday scent of the day 6/28

Posted by Robin on 28 June 2017 297 Comments

detail from a Hermès Qu'importe le flacon silk scarf

PSA: the Tauer L'Eau giveaway is still open! Meanwhile, happy Hump Day, happy Tapioca Day and happy birthday to John Cusack. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Hermès L'Ambre des Merveilles. I love the star-speckled tilting bottle for the Merveilles series, originally designed by Serge Mansau.

Reminder: 6/30 will be Bottle Porn Friday...wear a fragrance that you bought because you were drawn to the aesthetics of the bottle, or just wear a fragrance from a bottle you think is perfect. Suggested by chocolatemarzipan8.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows detail from a Hermès Qu'importe le flacon silk scarf, designer Catherine Baschet.

Day Two of training that starts at the buttcrack of dawn (6 am, an hour at which I do not enjoy being awake, let alone caffeinated and functional). Selva Do Brazil today, as I was inspired by Robin’s yesteruse of a Berdoues. I don’t have a bottle of it, but I can imagine it from the packaging of the sample :) Yawwwwwwn.

“The buttcrack of dawn”….I love that phrase :)

You are smelling good…the Selva Do Brazil bottle is amazing! and we are house twins as I am in Berdoues Grand Cru Cologne Collection Arz el Rab.

I’ve never tried that one! I’ll have to try to get my hands on a sample of that and the gorgeous new violet one.

You’ve mentioned that the Berdoues are available at discounters; would you mind telling me which once? They’re not available at my go-to (fragrancenet). Not that I need to buy any MORE perfume…but Assam of India has really turned into a love as I’ve been using my sample.

the four bottle that float around our house I bought at smallflower, parfum.com and fragrancex and they were all discounted. When I looked just now it seems as though they are out of stock at the last two online sites. Bigelow, smallflower and beautyhabit still stock them so if you get a discount code or a discount with email sign up you can get a discount off of full price. Also, Sephora sells them and if you have a discount code for Sephora that would be another way to get some $$$ off.

when you log onto the bigelow site a pop up screen announces ten dollars off your first order…probably have to give them your email address.

I may have to get a bottle of the Selva do Brasil, even though I recently acquired the Assam. (All that talk about elephants!). When I tested the line, I was surprised by how much I liked them.

Today’s bottle porn: Leather Angel (that’s not what it’s really called but that’s what it is) in its pentalobate bottle grasped in a chrome claw, served in a leather pouch with a baby-blue satin drawstring. The smell is Angel taken to a dark and slightly scary place: patchouli is amped up to keep pace with the leather, and the sweetness is toned way down. I’m wearing a tiny spritz because it is potent stuff.

The Liqueur is very sweet but I love it — a lot of richness and complexity that I think is missing from the newer iterations of the original.

Yes, happy Wednesday! A few weeks ago, I saw one of the bumper stickers that are shaped like a paw, right? It said: “Every day is hump day.” Good for a giggle.

I’m in Yuzu Fou again, from my new FB. Dry, arid citrus for what promises to be a hectic day.

    Y’all have a good one.

    SOTD is Reichebach Golden Drop.
I found this little gem last night as I was looking through my perfumes. It is a mini bottle sent to me as a gift with my decant order. I chose it because the bottle is cute, but I quite like the fragrance too. It is definitely an old school perfume – a slightly soapy sweet floral with animalic notes: honey, beeswax, flowers and something that reminds me of a fur coat. This is not the official pyramid, just my first impressions. But what I especially like is how it works with my skin chemistry. On me, it softens and slowly turns into a sensual “my skin but better” – a sensual and subtle honeyed floral.

Woke up super late, got to work super, super late due to train delays, missed an important meeting I was supposed to attend, now trying to finish an extensive report due in an hour and no coffee or breakfast yet. At least another lunch retirement party today will soon release the stress. I sprayed on Tea Rose since my bottle arrived yesterday and it was the only perfume handy before leaving home. It is very nice, bright, easy to wear and it is helping with this crazy, but hopefully good day. Be well everyone!

No bottle porn today, wearing a bit of the Tauer Rose Oil sent to me by a delightful NSTer. I like it. In small doses. No need for a full bottle.

I’m once again living without TV and I have to say, not being glued to the political drama here and around the world has been a relief!

I poured my table yesterday and I’m inordinately pleased with the result! Not perfect, but most of the “issues” are
an easy fix. What I love most about it is that in “regular” light it looks very “white, clean, and neat” (for 10 extra points, name the artist who delivered that title song way back in 1988!) but in sunlight or artificial lighting it’s like the Vegas strip- all sparkly and blingy!

    Happy Humpday✌️

    SotD is Romanza.

Not really bottle porn…on pictures that cap looks totally weird.. (in real life it actually has a pretty nice feel to it). And the sprayer is very good.

Also, I sampled MEM by Bogue last night (also last sunday).
    Wow! So beautiful.

On fragrantica the note list screams lavender. Now, most of the time I dislike lavender, but here it does not bother me it all.

It is a ‘kaleidoscopic’ scent to me, shifting and changing all the time. Yes it starts with a lavenderbomb but it soon changes into a more abstract scent of flowers, fruits, vetiver, ambergris, cuddly animalic notes..

The dry down is great, sillage moderate, longevity immense.

L’Attesa is great! Have you tried one of the new MM’s? Or are they not available yet?

I still have to work my way through all the samples of their releases up til l’attesa (the shop assistent gave me the whole bunch when I bought Romanza, that was really sweet).

Cuirs is one of my sleepytime perfumes too, along with its fellow kindly-granddad perfume, Tuscan Leather. For travel, samples are good because they are so teensy, and it’s guilt free if you check them when empty.

But then why just two? Why not take a handful of samples? At worst you could make yourself some 2- or 5-mL decants of, say, your five location-appropriate favorites, right? They take up almost no room at all. (Where are you going??)

Back from vacation and tackling the mountain of laundry and snow drifts of cat hair my three kitties managed to shed (seriously, I don’t know how they have any fur left). I brought an Atelier sampler set on my trip, and I’m trying Rose Anonyme again today, trying to decide what I think. It’s def the most interesting of the Ateliers I tried, but maybe a little sour to my nose . . .

I have a couple of felines, and one is a long-haired ragdoll, so I feel your pain. Sometimes it seems like her fundamental purpose is to be a fur-producing machine, as if all of her energy is devoted to growing fur as fast and as furiously as possible. Do you ever notice small strands of fur floating around on updrafts in your house?

Speaking about bottle porn- couple years ago I got Amouge coffret with 6 mini bottles- colorful, gorgeuos and pure yum! I have to keep them in the drawer for now until my girls grow up and stop grabbing my mini bottles. I plan to keep mini Amouages after I drain them OF COURSE!

SOTD is Hermes Un Jardin Mediterranee. I always find the standard Hermes bottle shape pleasing, but I particularly like the blue-to-yellow fade in this one. Plus, fig.

Once this fades, as we know it will, I’ll top up from the mini of Un Jardin Sur Le Nil that I keep in my desk at work. The unbearable cuteness of the mini bottle outweighs its pedestrian clear glass.

Doesn’t hurt that the contents are so damn wonderful. Had great fun with my book club last night sitting out under the stars with great wine, great women, and great conversation. I have often wished that everything could come in SL-style bottles, preferably with side tags like the Guerlain les Arts et les Matières, so that I can side-stack them and be able to pull them out like books with labeled spines. I, however, find the SL bottles to be just about perfect.

Someone who will stand outside our window serenading us with a boom box? Yup.
I’m with you on Diet Coke vs DP, BUT, the best IMO is the Diet Pepsi with the black label- formerly called Pepsi Max-taste and caffeine content exceed expectations.
Hope your shift isn’t too bad!

Wearing the Baies Rose twist of X. So grateful for my SA who sends me samples of anything I request that his store sells. These two twists are funny, the tuberose one I think is great, but you really only smell the “twist” for about five minutes, and then to me it smells identical to X. The Baies Rose twist doesn’t smell like a twist on X at all, but a completely new perfume. I’d happily wear either if a bottle fell into my lap but I’m not purchasing.

Gorgeous day today so opted for a beautiful perfume to match: Le Labo Ylang 49. I have the balm but I am one who likes the LL bottles and the metal travel case is especially nice to me.
PSA for anyone who likes the YOSH line: Hautelook has them on sale for 30 bucks for the next couple of days only. I’m dithering on Sottile which I’ve always liked when I sampled it but never wanted to shell out the $110 for such a simple (but lovely) clean tea-rose.

Last night I had a dream that I was cooking pasta for George Clooney. We were having a nice conversation and he kissed my cheek and told me I smelled nice. This morning I looked over my perfume collection and tried to imagine What George Would Like. Figuring he has smelled hundreds of perfumes on women, I went with DSH Cafe Noir. Indie perfumer, and everybody likes coffee and spices, right? This is what happens when you watch an old ER episode right before bed.

I smell like an orange flan. Delicious. Thanks to cm8 for the layering pro-tip.

Yay! for Serge Mansau and his oeuvre. I’ll wear EdM later today. M. Mansau must be why not all perfume bottles are rectangular, though I do love a strong rectangle because CHANEL, the best use of a rectangle ever.

I loved Eau des Merveilles from my first sniff of a sample vial, so the EdM bottle, which I adore, makes it that much more fun. I would like to see another special edition bottle of EdM like those pretty pegasus and constellation bottles.

SOTD is Annick Goutal “Songes”. Bottle porn for the ribbed vaguely ovoid bottles – 2 of the 3 AG FBs I have at home are the masculine square ones which are not things of beauty.

Notes are vanilla, jasmine, ylang-ylang, frangipani and tiare.

I can see why this gets so much love – it’s a bright but not screeching floral with decent lasting power. It’s not really my thing, although I’m enjoying the perfume equivalent of “putting a face to the name”. :^)

Smelling good and I love the women’s AG bottles myself! It is nice when you have a collection in all different sizes of those AG bottles…a very very long time ago I had about ten empty ones on my bathroom shelf until Mr. CM8 complained that it was “impractical” to use such useful bathroom storage space for empty perfume bottles….

Good morning, all. This week has been very on-off for me (mostly off) with technical issues at home (a moribund modem, I think) and increasing busy-ness at work. Good busy-ness, but busy nonetheless.

I’ve been thinking about bottle porn, and I had just about concluded, in a self-congratulatory way, that I was immune to it, when I caught sight of my bottle of Narcisso, the white cube. Now, I LOVE that bottle, its shape, its heft, its white clarity. In fact, it may be whispered that I love the bottle quite a bit more than the scent, of which I am tolerably fond, but not much more. Then, too, I bought Rose Musc, mostly for the smokey rose juice, but the overall gold-ness of the bottle was enchanting as well. And so as I go through my collection, I realise I am definitely not immune to the charm of a handsome bottle. I was kidding myself.

Today is a day for both perfume and bottle love: Black Cashmere. No surprises from Downunder today. The perfume is perfect for a biting winter day, and the bottle is pleasing too, a heavy, smooth cylinder of black glass, quite plain but also elegant.

Hope this post “takes”: my main job this weekend is clearly to either install a new modem or organise super fast broadband. I tried before with the super fast, but dealing with the company turned into a nightmare, and I threw a paddy and cancelled the whole thing in a fit of frustrated but righteous anger. Be well, all.

A lot of their frags were not for me, but I really liked 1996, Pulp, and Bal d’Afrique. Oliver Peoples was a serious contender, so most likely would be getting it for a split meet later this year. Rose of no Man’s Land was a nice rose, but not nice enough to buy (would use if a bottle felt into my lap, but I felt I had much better roses in my collection already)

This week, I’ve decided to sniff my way through the 12 mini EDTs in the Jean Patou Ma Collection Parfums d’Epoque 1925-1964 boxed set. Yesterday was the pineapple chypre Colony (1938); I also have some of the original vintage, only the dark base notes remaining.

Today is L’Heure Attendue (1946). It was created to celebrate the end of WWII and long-awaited moment of Liberation with a “refined, peaceful aroma synonymous with a new mellowness of life.” It is a lovely, soft, rosy-floral sandalwood.

Yes it is. It is a lovely rich floral, richer and more flowery than I usually do, but something in it captivates me. Maybe it is the rose and violet leaf which keep it from veering into the BWF category that I can’t quite pull off. Le Sillage Blanc is also lovely; an aromatic chypre that I think would be lovely on just about anyone.

The first three in the line, which were extraits rather than EDPs, were not quite me. A giant oud, a BWF, and, my favorite, a fougere (Issara) that seemed maybe a little too big for a fougere, if that makes sense. But others loved them all.

And I should say I am revisiting the first three now myself, as my mood shifts with perfume so radically!

I’m in The City of Sin, from a sample sent by a generous NSTer… and weirdly enough, it is growing on me. Maybe its the fact that once the sample is empty, I probably will never come across it again–but I am enjoying my time with this wide tie, heel lifts, comb over of a scent.

If I could find it at 1/6 the cost per ml, I’d definitely buy a travel-sized flask…

“If” followed by a “perfume purchase” is like pennies in a fountain…

Thanks everyone for the good wishes for my mom’s health. She is doing really well. My SOTD is Byredo Oliver Peoples. I like the bottle because of the magnetized cap.

At the beginning of the week, I thought “I don’t have anything I’ve purchased because of the bottle.” Then I took a good look at my collection, and – I do. Today, it’s the gorgeous Ralph Lauren Safari, that lovely green, mossy, floral. I have two bottles, one from the mid 90s and one from probably 8 or 9 years later. One is the regular “cut crystal” bottle, the other is the “crystal” spear point bottle (which is just about the worst in terms of cultural appropriation…sigh). Love the first, not so much the second.

SOTD = Guerlain Terracotta Le Parfum from the sample/decant stash. It’s also Bottle Porn. And rapidly moving up on the full bottle wish list.

My morning samples wore off, so now am in the perfume oil of Demeter Honeysuckle, which with luck will last til the end of the working day. In a practical, travel-sized roll-on.

Today’s bottle porn fragrance: Diptyque Essences Insensees Rose de Mai. I have to admit that, although I would never buy a fragrance just for the bottle if I didn’t like the fragrance, I have been known to buy a beautiful bottle if I like the fragrance well enough.
Case in point. A very nice, sweet, well-behaved rose. Not incredibly beautiful, but charming in its way. Oh boy now I sound like a copywriter! Ack!

I am behind in reading the Bottle Porn SOTD!

SOTD = Guerlain Mon Precieux Nectar

What is more gorgeous than golden yellow juice in an elegant bee bottle?

You can read about it here:

One of the advantages of splitting a bottle is you get to keep the original bottle. That said, there are times when one has to give up a gorgeous bottle to keep doen the cost of the split (I am looking at you Hermes Galop).

Bottle porn? I love so many perfume bottles, but the only one I have bought purely because of the bottle (the scent is great too, but I already had it) is the blue-green Vol de Nuit shimmer spray with atomizer bulb. The bottle is the same shape and size as the classic propeller bottle, but it is a marvelous teal or peacock blue. It makes me happy every time I look at it!
