Wednesday scent of the day 5/31

Posted by Robin on 31 May 2017 258 Comments

2013 2014 Costume National fashion campaign

Hump Day, Walt Whitman's birthday and the end of May! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm doing green, in Costume National Cyber Garden by Antoine Lie.

Reminder: 6/2 will be Antoine Friday...wear a fragrance by perfumer Antoine Lie or Antoine Maisondieu, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: image shows detail from a 2013/2014 Costume National campaign.

SOTD Shalimar EDT thanks to a generous NSTer
SipOTD is Pleine Lune by MF and it does feel like a full moon even though its morning.

Due to being so benign yesterday I am choosing to pull a Holly today and am a cacophony of smellies-

Bas de Soie (inner right arm)
Tuberose Criminelle (outer right arm….this fragrance would have been weird to me six years ago as a perfume…not anymore…smells like Ben Gay due to the wintergreen note – a scent I am all too familiar with from my dancing days)
Fleurs de Sel (inner left arm)
    Oeillet Bengale (outer right arm)
    Tardes (neck)
Orange Sanguine over Safran Troublant over Black Flower Mexican Vanilla on my sweater

I am really enjoying the BFMV as a base for just about every fragrance. And Orange Sanguine as a top to brighten up other fragrances…the other day I wore OS over vintage Amazone and it was “Amaz”ing!

I am also grateful for this opportunity to sample so many fragrances that are out of my comfort zone and I feel that I am truly expanding my olfactory palate. Certain notes that were once verboten in my fragrance collection, like cumin and ambergris, I am really coming around to appreciating and , dare I say it, liking!

Which brings me to a question for Robin- any chance we could do a community project around the polarized note of cumin? I know I have given you other ideas but just adding this one to the mix….cumin seems to be a topic of conversation as of late on NST.

I used to avoid it like the plague because I associate it with food and not with something to wear to smell pretty…also, I think my skin really amps it up…I think because it is a love it/hate it kind of note it might be fun to see what lovers of cumin recommend and also to get haters of cumin to come out of their comfort zones and perhaps give cumin another try. Just an idea :) !! Cause Robin already knows I am shameless in that I want my name attached to a community project-LOL!

I had never thought she would enjoy this. She usually wears Pleasures or Beautiful, but she instantly commented on it as we met outside of where we work, and did so again a few hours later. She found it highly amusing that it’s called Je suis un homme.
It’s a good fragrance, not my favourite of either Lie or ELDO, but very good.

She is very, very conventional with a few odd preferences that are not at all conventional added to the mix. (a preference for certain rather outspoken Dutch comedians for instance.) So I’m sure Déclaration and Je suis un homme fit into the latter.

Wearing something very bright and happy today…Cedrat Enivrant, as I will need it.

My sister and I are helping my dad declutter the house for a bit today, and take some of mom’s clothes to a women’s shelter. We usually break up the activity a little with lunch, and I’m bringing a strawberry cake along for dessert.

Ahem. Y’all have a good day!

No affiliation but I think this is a pretty good price…also, Sephora carries it and they allow you three free samples and they are rather large samples…if you get a nice SA and she fills your spray vial to the top each sample is about 3-4 ml which should hold you over :)…..if you are willing to walk in with family members/friends they can have samples too which is another way to get more of Neroli Dore!

Thanks for the hot tip! This is still more than I want to pay for a full bottle, unfortunately, but it sure is tempting! I don’t think the Sephora nearest me carries Neroli Dore, but this reminds me to look for it at Nordstrom, where I’ve also gotten free samples.

The opening of that one is so incredibly gorgeous. But that’s all I get from it. No matter how much I spray, I get the opening… then 60 seconds later it’s all over. I thought it was just me but the same thing happens on my H. Lucky you, then, and by all means, no better way to celebrate Int’l Children’s Day :)

On my skin Eau de Neroli Dore smells for about an hour, maybe 2 before it’s completely gone. But sometimes it’s just enough as a refreshment. Of course ideally I’d love it to stick to my skin for whole day :)

I’m in CDG’s “Stephen Jones” from a tiny dauber, and even on my scent eating skin, a drop or two is plenty. The FB is a black version of that cream puff of glass for Wisteria Hysteria. Lucky Scent lists its notes as: violet leaf, meteorite, cloves, carnation, rose, violet, jasmin, heliotrope, gaïac wood, magma, black cumin, vetiver, amber

The fact that it is an edt is a good thing–Wouldn’t need it any stronger.

I think may need a larger decant to test this more. It is a little strange–not at all a slam dunk for an FB–but I am weirdly drawn to it!

    Anyone else tried it?

I wore it last week and LOVED it. I went searching for more, as well, but it appears to be d/c’d, sadly. If you find a good source, let me know. I pretty much got violet and heliotrope – nothing weird, and possibly very close to my ideal violet. I dumped an entire sample on myself and didn’t get massive projection, but I did wonder how it would wear sprayed.

I just ordered myself a decant from TPC, and Lucky Scent has the bottle for $150… :-) ! Maybe (maybe) a split is in our future…

To paraphrase from Casablanca –Louis, I think this could be the beginning of a beautiful perfumeship.

But I remember getting two emails from them, one the account confirmation, and I believe the other was an order confirmation. I know I didn’t get a shipment notification though. I did get the product in less than a week, which surprised me since I assumed it would be coming from overseas.

Today I opened up a big aloe vera leaf and spread some goo on my elbow eczema and a burn on my arm. I noticed that it has a very pungent odor, a little salty and a little cuminy, a bit like BO. So that’s my scent of the morning. I bought it at the supermarket so I’m wondering if the odor might come from what the plant was watered with and what kind of soil it grew in. And that makes me wonder about how the environment effects the smell of plants in general and if that is taken into consideration when the raw materials are selected for perfumery. Pondering..
We have had several days of wet weather here in New England and I have really been getting into taking walks in the evening, when the rain has let up but everything is still damp. It’s like an olifactory wonderland on those nights. I can smell the damp soil, the flowering plants, the balsamic smells from the greenery. It’s a real treat.

I grew up in the Canary Islands where aloe vera and similar plants grow more or less naturally and the odor I remember is basically like you describe. It is true that water for irrigating the plants is obtained from the sea via desalination plants and is not “soft”.

Every aloe leaf I’ve ever split has a weird, slightly off-putting odor. It is a salty-fleshy scent. I’ve grown lots of different aloes and some smell stronger but they all seem to be similar. As far as I can tell, hard or soft water doesn’t make a huge difference.

When I woke up this morning I could still smell Salome (I sprayed it on yesterday evening) on my arm without much effort.
So longevity with 2 sprays at least 14 hours. And it still smelled sooo good. Maybe the last phase is the best! Oh and my husband digs it as well.

I went for a run at 10 AM and took a shower…and even after that it faintly lingered on. Woah. :)

But I decided to drown it all in Vetiver blanc, by Sultan Pasha.
I think I wear this scent at least once a week. Its a fabulous and magical mix of very good quality vetiver, tuberose and ambergris. I am addicted. :)

I have a few Antonies (even a FB, Hinoki), but so far did not feel like wearing them.
But do you get half a point for a ‘by proxy’ wearing (if I spray it on my husband)? ;)

For a SP-attar its pretty ‘weak’, but I get 6 to 8 hours out of it.
(a heavy hitter like incense royale lasts at least 12 hours…)

Also, Vetiver blanc starts out light, but after 30-45 minutes it seems to increase in strength. And…it seems to smell even better and somewhat stronger on me in warm weather/on sun kissed skin. :)

No…but with my order of 1ml Vetiver blanc, sultan sent me a prototype of the White Truffle. It was still work in progress but it was already lovely.

Today I wearing some 2016 Noir de Noir and some from 2012 from a decant I just received from evilBay.

    I am sniffing compulsively and…so far…they smell…wait for it…

Exactly the same! I cannot discern any differences between the two. :) I shall, of course, continue arduously sniffing throughout the day and report back.

I suppose NdN may have already been reformulated by 2012 but based on the complaints on Fragrantica I suspected some tinkering 2013 or after.

So now it looks like I can proceed with a current bottle…I wonder if I call Notino they will confirm a batch code before they ship it…seems crazy and unlikely and yet… ;)

I was craving No 5 edt earlier – I guess it’s not just me as many here are wearing various versions of it.

Speaking of No 5, I found (and bought) a bottle of Parfum de Toilette yesterday. I googled and googled and couldn’t find any references to No 5 Parfum de Toilette. Anyone here a Chanel expert? The bottle looked quite old and is shipping from Thailand from a seller who seems to specialize in vintage Chanel. At $28 I didn’t figure I had much to lose, so I went for it.

I ended up in the last of an Apres l”Ondee decant and kind of wished I’d put the aforementioned No 5 edt on until I realized my bottle of Guerlain Vetiver is to be delivered any minute. Apres L’Ondee doesn’t last long on me so transitioning to Vetiver should work beautifully.

Back from Scotland and horribly jet lagged still despite sleeping for over 9 hours last night. I should’ve taken today off work too.
We drove to 5 castles (visited 4, 1 was closed), two Abbeys, one palace, two hiking trails – one to visit “Fairy Pools” and one for viewing cliffs, and visited a distillery. I had whiskey almost every night and came back with two bottles of it and three smaller bottles of mead. Driving on the left-hand side of the road was terrifying and using two facets (one for hot one for cold) was incredibly annoying. It was hotter in Scotland than it was on the east coast US for the majority of the week because we were there during the once-in-ten-years freak heat wave. No place there had AC and one of our B&B’s put us in the attic…. Needless to say we didn’t sleep that night. Twilight hours of 3:30 am and 10:30 pm meant I was horribly confused as to when to sleep and got very little of it. But we still had a great time and it was fascinating and weird and I’m glad to be home in my own bed with one facet in my bathroom.

I’m sorta functioning today. Mostly on a double dose of coffee this morning that’s left me jittery while still being jet-lagged. I still feel airport hangover gross so I put on L’ombre dans l’eau so I’d try to feel awake and somewhat fresh.

Using up a sample of What We Do in Paris Is Secret today. I’m back at work from a little staycation. My mom visited from Chicago and so my husband and I did the whole she-bang. She was here for her birthday as well, so I took her to Jo Malone (which she loves, she had never been to the boutique before,) for the hand and arm massage. my sales assistant is such a doll, she had the whole thing extra special with bakery cookies, mousse cake, frites all dolled up in the jo malone cups with ribbon, several beverages. My mom never really wore perfume until I got interested, and so I send her samples, so far her favorites are Orange Blossom, Peony and Blush Suede, Byredo Seven Veils, 1996, and Flowerhead, and Replica Beach Walk. One of the days that we spent in LA we took her to Scent Bar which she also really enjoyed. All the staff there are just so nice and helpful, they recommended several that she liked and ended up getting samples of the Different Company Une Nuit Magnetique, White Zagora, Tokyo Bloom, and VC&A California Reverie. Apparently we’ve found that The Different Company may be the line for her! I hadn’t really explored that line much besides I miss violet and Kashan Rose. No matter how often I go in to Scent Bar, I always have a great time and learn something new.

only samples. I was actually going to only get 2 samples, and the sales assistant was like get these too, take advantage while you’re here, you should try this on your skin! hahaha. they’re extremely nice regardless of who you are, but all of the employees know me so it’s really great fun. I ended up with samples of Crop 2016 (a really minty oud) by House of Oud, and some recommendations from the new line by Michel Almairac, Totally White (which is a really wonderful lilac) and Milky Musk. The last sample I got was Deja le Printemps by Oriza L. Legrand–he really wanted me to see if I’d like that one on my skin. It’s rare that I purchase in the boutique, I mainly go there to ask them what’s new and worth smelling. Then I’ll purchase from the website. Oh, also I smelled the new Tauer. One of the employees was saying that she doesn’t typically like his perfumes, but she likes this one, because it’s so unlike his previous perfumes. I sprayed it while I was there and found it to be delightful. I haven’t tried it on my skin, but while it’s light I sensed a bit of a classic feel to it.

Yeah, they were very friendly and generous with samples the 2 times I’ve been. But I went with every intention of impulse buying-which I accomplished both times!
Deja la Printemps is pretty but seems like you need to douse yourself for full effect. Please report back on Milky Musk (weird name) as I’m forever on a musk quest.

Rose Musc attar, City Out and Wild Thai Suede (first 2-3 minutes on my skin were like ‘oh crap this is too much wood’, but very quickly it settled in the most buttery suede I have ever smelled). I also tried his Sandalwood oil and it is amazing. For non-sweet coffee, I highly recommend Kopi Luwak Attar. I also got a small sample of mughal Amber Oud and it is amazing (although super pricey!!)

I agree, I find No 19 ‘pretty’ and friendly as well, both the edt and edp.
I dont get a ‘bitchy’ vibe or the coldness that some people attribute to it. Or maybe its the vintage they have in mind. I never smelled a vintage version… :(

I like to call No. 19 my Invisible Armor scent, so I do kinda get what the detractors are referring to, at least to some degree. But I feel very comfortable and embraced in it as well as armored. Love it.

Morning, all. We still have wireless connection problems: Telecom is “working hard to reinstate our usual high standards of service” or sone equally weaselly, meaningless words. SOTD is Divine, by Divine, bought on a trip to Paris some years ago. I like this on about seven days of the year, and this Black Thursday is one of them: it’s cold, it may rain, I have a pile of marking to get through in a hurry, and our Dakkie is a very sick boy. Of all these things, the only one that matters is Dakkie. Divine seemed to be a suitable perfume for holding off the worry and fear that is gripping me: it’s rich, interesting and complex, yet essentially undemanding. It smells unambiguously, effortlessly pretty, and has a certain presence without being particularly assertive. Also, if the news about Dakkie’s tests us what I’m braced for, it’s not a perfume I would necessarily grieve for because of associations with a bad moment.

    Be well, all.

    SotD = Infusion d’Amande

I like Amande best of the variant Infusions (Oeillet, Oranger, Vetiver, and Iris Cedre) I’ve tried so far. Amande has the delicious-but-inedible balance I love.

SOTD is ELdO “Eau de Protection” by the two Antoines.

    Top: ginger, bergamot and pepper;
    Mid: jasmine, geranium and rose;
Base: patchouli, benzoin, incense and cacao.

Nice stuff – at first blast the rosey-fresh scent reminds me of Hermes “Rose Ikebana”. I presume that’s the geranium impersonating rhubarb. The later development is different, so they are not smellalikes. Middling lasting power.
