Tuesday scent of the day 5/30

Posted by Robin on 30 May 2017 210 Comments

It's Tuesday, it's Mint Julep Day, and it's the 150th day of the year! What fragrance are you wearing?

I overslept badly, but as soon as I get a cup of tea in me, the plan for today is Burberry Brit Rhythm for Her, by Antoine Maisondieu with Nathalie Cetto.

Reminder: 6/2 will be Antoine Friday...wear a fragrance by perfumer Antoine Lie or Antoine Maisondieu, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Burberry Nova Check teapot keychain is sold out.

Wearing my sample of Mohur. And I am in trouble because I looooove it and it is $$$.

Also got a bit rear-ended on my way to work today, but both self and car seem fine. Yay for bumpers!

I find bumper to bumper accident so disconcerting- that sudden jolt felt through one’s entire body, ugh- glad to hear you are okay!

Mohur is so pretty, you smell great.

That’s how I felt about the other two I sampled — liked but didn’t love. I tried Mohur first and was afraid I’d fall just as hard for the entire line.

Don’t, it’s stunning ;) I liked but didn’t love the EDP then I was sent two decants of the extrait by two different perfume fairies and I’m very, very smitten.

Mohur Extrait is a whole ‘nother creature. It is the BEST. None of the rest of this line hold a candle to it (IMHO).

Still suffering from jet lag, but smelling wonderful in Helmut Lang EDP 2014
Musky and floral, a definitive skin scent.
I received this one in a trade during my vacation, and am enjoying it immensely.

In Arielle Shoshanna! The passionfruit opening pulsed energetically for quite some time and made my commute delightful. The whiffs of not-squeaky-clean musk(?) gave it a slightly animalic edge. Now it has tapered down to a pleasant woodsy-musky scent, and I also get warmth from the saffron. I am not a sweet fruit perfume person, but this is so much fun- and office friendly by the time I arrive to work. I am looking forward to the 15ml bottle being available :-)

Tom Ford Velvet Orchid by Yann Vasnier, Calice Becker, Shyamala Maisondieu and Antoine Maisondieu.
Normally, I do not like orchid in perfumes. It tends to be too sweet (cloying actually) on me. But this one is rather nice in small doses (dabbed not sprayed). The orchid here works well with vanilla and rum. Smooth.

Puredistance M. Looking though my samples, I have 3 Puredistance: Black, M, and Opardu. Reading more about M, I learned it was created by Roja Dove. I tried a little last night, and it’s extremely nice. During development I get a pleasant cumin, (I’m always concerned when I smell cumin) and I didn’t see cumin listed in the notes, so not sure where that comes from? Have a wonderful day!

My skin tends to pick up “cumin” even when it is not listed as a note! And cumin gets amplified on my skin when it is listed as a note.

I love eating cumin but it is the wearing that has been a challenge…and the funny thing is I seem to be testing a lot of stuff with cumin in it so I think I might be coming around to expanding my horizons and accepting it as a note…last night I tested Diorella and I swear there is cumin in there when I put it on my skin (but I could not smell it from the vial)….I was expecting fruit, but I got cumin! I also get the same from Safran Troublant but I just recently fell in love with that one because the drydown is gorgeous…but the initial blast is cumin and I don’t even think that is a note in there…wonder if the saffron is making my nose perceive cumin?

A Tuesday that feels like a Monday- ugh!

Tea of the day was two cups of very strong coffee.

SOTD is the gorgeous BF Au Dela Narcisse. I’m seeing a decant of this in my very near future.

Has anyone tried Chaco sandals? I’ve been through 3 pair of sport/water sandals and would like a pair that lasts, but these are a bit pricey…

I love Au Dela! (I have the original and a sample of the Narcisse.) I also loooove my Chacos. They’ve been hiking in Yellowstone, kayaking, and swimming with me. I’ve had mine over a year now and they still look almost new. I did once have to spend about an hour cleaning gunk out of the slits in the sole (that allow you to adjust them), but that’s about the most maintenance effort I’ve put into them. I think they’re just fantastic — they even have decent arch support (my feet verge on wide width shoes, so I wear the men’s Chacos instead of the women’s.)

Oh, good to know! I have obnoxiously high arches and my Birkies don’t work for long walks/hiking. FYI, they do come in wide width, which is another reason I’m leaning towards getting a pair. Sounds like you have given yours a work out! Thanks for the recommendation. ????

Chacos are great. Terrific arch support. You could be in them all day. I am contemplating getting another pair. The two pairs that I do have have got the thin, double straps that loop around the big toe. Not as fond of that since they tend to tighten up around my toe after awhile and I have to keep loosening them. My kids have the single wide strap that just goes across the top of the foot and they both seem to like them a lot.

I have the single large strap over the toe, which works well for me (though the lady at the store showed me that you can pull it flat and wear it like the no-toe-strap version).

I will go straight home from work to give this a try! I also have the double-strap-over-toe style of Chacos and I can’t seem to loosen them up enough to keep them from squeezing the life out of my poor toe.

I was originally thinking of the double straps, but had read the same thing you mentioned regarding frequent adjustment of the toe loop in reviews. I think I’m going to go for the single strap, and I love the fact you have so many choices in the strap! Thanks for your input ????

Huh. Maybe I need some. I have high arches and wide feet (and VERY narrow heels), which makes it hard to find shoes that a) actually fit and b) don’t make my feet hurt.

I have chacos but find them a bit uncomfortable due to the straps moving ( wide feet, high arches). I prefer keens for longer walks, also because there is more toe protection and better for rock scrambling. Easy to wash webbing. I go through one pair a year but they don’t fall apart, just the heel feels a bit worn down. 5 10s are my absolute favourite brand but can’t get them here.

I used to have Keens & liked them quite a bit. I just had problems getting them tight enough that muck didn’t pull them off, and they got a bit hot for Texas summers. I agree on the toe protection & rock scrambling though (at least if you can get them to fit right, mine also shifted around on rocks – I was a weird width in that brand!).

Floragal – to your questions on Rising Phoenix – I have tried his attars and love them!!! His style is similar to Sultan Pasha, and you can commit to a small sample (0.3 g) which would last forever. All of the attars are highest quality.
      This is what I tried
      – Musk Rose Attar – amazing rose. You have to like Musk however. I started with a small 0.3 g and have graduated to 1 ml. Staying power is amazing – over 12 hours on my perfume eating skin
      – Mysore Sandalwood oil. This is a real deal. You can wear it alone or layer with others.
      – Kyoto Gyoen Oud – Incense + Osmanthus. Kicking myself for buying all these other Osmanthusy fragrances – this one is the best so far
      – Wild Thai Side Agarwood. First 5 seconds i thought it was a mistakes, but settles into amazing soft suede
      – Kopi Luwak Attar – he sent me a sample, I would have never considered purchasing it. Amazing coffee flavor, nothing comes even close
I also tried Poison Fig, More Beauty than the Beast, Prega from his other website. All of them are incredible and can be purchased in smaller quantities.
After discovering both his and Sultan Pasha’s work (I think Sultan Pasha buys a lot of raw materials from JK), I am seriously considering selling majority of my fragrant holdings – a lot of things do not come close to what these guys are doing

Uh-oh. I haven’t delved into Rising Phoenix yet but they’ve been on my radar. If they’re comparable to Sultan Pasha’s offerings then I’m sure to be smitten. Have you tried any of the White Lotus attars? I love them as well, but they aren’t nearly as potent. Thanks for sharing your impressions, that’s quite an endorsement!

No SOTD yet. Thinking about Angel Muse or Bombay Bling. Planning to get Prada Luna Rossa for the hubs for Father’s Day since he really wants some (might have to throw in a travel spray of Muse for me).
Really lemming that keychain, but it’s probably just as well that it’s sold out since it probably costs more than I’d be willing to spend. Tea of the day is whatever the hubs brewed, but I think it’s Harney’s Hao Ya B.

Guerlain Muguet 2016 for me today. It’s hot this morning in the library, and there is grade 3 testing going on in here, so I have to be QUIET. Only time during the whole year that I get to sound like an old fashioned librarian. SHHH!

Wearing Issey Miyake L’eau D’Issey. Another bottle that it has not gotten any love from me for a long time. These days I find the melon note overwhelming and I cannot enjoy this fragrance anymore. Since there is not much left, I will finish it this week and for my relief another FB will be gone. Facing another busy week of outdoor inspections. On a cold, grey day and possible rain later being on a scaffolding is not so pleasant. I made the big mistake of not carrying at least a light jacket. I never thought it was going to be so windy. With a positive attitude and plenty of hot-strong coffee I will survive. Have a happy Tuesday everyone!

SOTD the lovely Fiori de Capri by Carthusia – LOTV and wild carnation, over a powdery base – very girlie, very pretty, for a lovely spring day in Michigan! I went to look at the Poitou donkeys that live down the road – the ones with long ringlets?
They are happy big hairy babies in their lush pasture. My scent fitted the scene very well. When my little splash bottle is gone, I am contemplating a FB of this.

In other news, when I wore Chanel #5 EDP (a more recent version, not vitage, but still #5!) the other day, adorable hubby leaned over me as he was leaving to kiss me goodbye, and said, “Oooo, you smell really nice!” Snuggle snuggle. :-) First time I remember him commenting on a Chanel scent. His nose is getting trained without any conscious thought on his part! LOL!

Gah. I love Bergamoss, trying very hard not to buy more of it. I have a feeling that her scents might be more skin-dependent than many perfumes — I have a friend who I share samples with and everything smells totally different on her than on me. Also I find her that perfumes tend to be dense — I think because they’re all natural?–seems like that could easily go muddy.

Plus side — think of all the money you’re saving!

I use 2 parts Argan to 3 or 4 parts sweet almond oil, and then dump a sample in (approximately a 7 ml vial) shake it up, and let it macerate for a day before I use it. I’ve been going through about 1 of these mixes/week (keep re-using the vials of course). It’s been really nice for my skin. I think it works best with scents that I want to quiet down and/or prolong. It definitely prolonged vintage Diorissimo. It maybe doesn’t do the trick for scents you’d like to “louden up.”

Hmm cumin you say..? Okay cumin can be sweaty and vice versa. And this scent def is a bit sweaty. But cumin to me is sharper, greener and more foodie. I dont get foodie associations at all. I get snuggly cuddly sweaty (the good kind). Like leather and fur.

I think there is something wrong with me when it comes to cumin — I do not like to smell it, or eat it. I wonder if it might be genetic — like the folks who can only taste soap when they eat cilantro.

Ha! I get cumin too! I have been wearing my samples ferociously (as in dump an entire vial on one arm and then dump another vial on another arm)…luckily I knew not to do that with Salome….one tiny dot and it was a powerhouse!

Wearing some PoaL on my left arm and some Lady Vengeance on my right…

Looking at reviews of PoaL on Fragrantica, many lament recent reformulations…much anger. ;) My manufacturer’s 10 ml spray is recent and I have never smelled the old stuff. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Looking at reviews of Lady Vengeance on Fragrantica now, I just have a sample of this one and I know I wore it before but I don’t remember my initial impression. Today I am liking it though it is much sweeter than PoaL. I see there is also a Vengeance Extreme…which I have not sniffed.

In Fat Electrician today, courtesy of the generous Pixel!

I may pass this one on to my older son. I sent him off on his recent travels with decants of Timbuktu and one of the Creed lavenders (forgetting which one right now), and when he came back, he asked if he might keep them. I tried not to jump up and down, or throw confetti in the air, or sing Hallelujah–and managed, I think, a fairly nonchalant, “Oh of course. I am glad you like them.”

Yay! That’s one smart and good smelling son you have. Of course you had to act like it was no big deal. Lol. This morning I sprayed attacked my son and he said “mom, is this really necessary?” More of a statement than a question. My answer was Yes, yes it is.

Wearing Silences PdT today. It’s quieted a lot since I put it on at 9 this morning, but every now and then I get a whiff of something lovely, and then I realize — it’s me!

Would love to know, vintage Silences or current version? I’m curious to find out if is the current version is nice.

I had a bottle of a current(ish) version — I think one set of packaging back from current — it was the plain black box instead of the black with rainbow shimmer (I just checked and it is still available online). It was lovely in a sort of high-pitched green & hyacinth way. I ended up giving mine away because it hit right in my perfume migraine zone, but I’d still be wearing it if that hadn’t been the case. However, I’ve never tried the vintage to compare.

mals is THE expert on Silences, and I discovered it on her blog, Muse in Wooden Shoes. In the event she doesn’t get back here for this discussion, do read what she’s written. You can still easily find the vintage.

I actually pulled out a fall/winter scent because it is another cold dreary day. SOTD Cocoa Tuberose by PP.

Recently finished a bottle so I opened three more different ones: Fan di Fendi, Kenzo Flower Summer 2006, and Kenzo Eau de Fleur de Magnolia. First one is more for fall but I’m enjoying the latter two.

I don’t actually have a lot of the Antoines in my collection, so I’ll save the ones I do have for later in the week. For today, I’m wearing Cuir d’Ange.

Yesterday morning I pulled a muscle in my upper back/neck so had a really painful and annoying Memorial Day. It’s a lot better today but still painful while I’m back at work. Also, the temp has dropped about 20 degrees and the clouds are back. I chose Encens et Lavande for both the weather and neck pain. It’s quite soothing.

Commando today. I’m not feeling it fragrance-wise. Oh well, clearing the nasal palate is a good thing.

Had an apple and a few handfuls of popcorn for lunch. Sweet-tart apple plus toasty and salty notes in a perfume would be yummy.

Learning more this week about the olfactory work of Antoine and Antoine already. Must admit when I hear the name I think of the Bugs Bunny cartoon with the two chefs battling to cook rabbit “a la Antoine.”

I’m in Penhaligon’s Sartorial today. The beeswax and soapy musk in this make the drydown last forever on my skin. Keeps me feeling fresh all the way through a long work day spent mostly on my feet.

SOTD = testing my sample of Derek Lam 10 Crosby Blackout. There’s an interesting peppery note in this. Unfortunately, I tried it over the drydown of something else, and am not sure if what I am smelling is all Blackout, or is a combo of the two scents. I’ll have to retry this solo.

SOTD: Encens Mythique de Orient which is lovely but it is bone-chillingly cold this morning in Southern Oz and I’m wishing I’d put on Chergui or 5 O’Clock Gingembre instead. Craving something spicy-warm…and all the cake *sigh*

    SOTD = VC&A Rose Velours

First day participating in this week’s community challenge. This beauty is by Antoine Maisondieu. I used 3 sprays as any more than that would be too much for the first 2 hours…and then it goes present but quiet. Today, my nose could be broken because I smelled Apples! Anyway, my sweetie Lucas loves this as much as I do, so there!

I have a few more of the Antoines but may join in again on Friday. Tomorrow is likely to be a No.19 day as the team has lunch with the manager’s manager and we don’t know which personality will show up. I have a super early start with someone who is in panic mode because she got called out as MIA by name by the overall program manager; she CHOSE to ignore my follow-ups for the last two months (it’s her project and I offered my Subject Matter expertise on an as needed basis). I also have an evening work event to attend so it will be a long long day tomorrow!
