Thursday scent of the day 5/25

Posted by Robin on 25 May 2017 257 Comments

Chanel pre-Fall 2017

Happy Towel Day (for interstellar hitchhikers), happy Geek Pride Day, and happy birthday to Sir Ian Murray McKellen! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm going under the radar with a dab of Boy Chanel.

Reminder: on 5/26 we're doing Under the radar — wear a fragrance with minimal (or no) sillage, or something you consider a "skin scent". (Suggested by Hajusuuri)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from Chanel's pre-Fall 2017 campaign.

Wearing the opposite of under the radar in Alahiiiiiiiiiiine!

Using C. Porto soap in honeysuckle this morning, thank you Nozkoz for the sensitive skin soap suggestions.
Ordered South of France Soap yesterday and its already shipped. Hope these are good baby shower favors and I can’t wait to try one myself if there are any left. Thank you ChocolateMarzipan

candied ginger, champaca and pineapple….what’s not to love :) !

Too bad it is really out of my price range…one ounce is two hundred dollars…yikes! However, it is all natural so I am sure the ingredients are top notch.

Oh and I forgot to mention that I applied the Thorn and Bloom and Ann Gerard to the tops of each foot…luckily I am in my own office with a door I can close because I am taking off my sandals and sniffing which is no easy feat (no pun intended) at my age!

Fleur de Chine is a skin scent on you? Wow – either I’m a chronic oversprayer of FdC or it’s a powerhouse on me … not that that’s a bad thing!

Happy Almost Friday Day! I was a little conflicted about getting out of bed this morning, but thanks to a 40 pound dog beating my pillow with her tail, I really had no choice. So.

Showered with Tauer and now sporting Bruno. Au Dela Narcisse, to be specific. Pretty sure I’m flying under the radar with this dabbed on beauty, mores the pity for anyone who CAN’T smell me cause I’m wafting a seriously fab floral funky fragrance.

Who likes alliteration! I do!! ????

    Reek on NSTers!

I lost my 10 year old bernese mountain dog this time last year. I am getting another. The dog mom should give birth this weekend which means bringing her home July 25th or so.

You know you are bordering on the edge when you have 30+ bottles of perfume staring at you an done of them seem worth putting on because you are just worn out by c*&p at work. Went Diam Blonde because it was the closest to reach and seems chilly which I am feeling too.

I got a decant of that because I was QUITE sure I’d love it. Nope. Didn’t work. I’m wondering if the decant was bad because it turned a dark Amber brown within a week. Is it dry and dusty on you?

I wouldn’t describe it as a dusty scent but it is a fairly dry scent. Ginger, tea and spices.

Another great (and cheap!) gingerbready scent is Pacifica Tibetan Mountain Temple. On me it’s orange peels and not-too-sweet gingerbread on a patchouli/vetiver base. My solid perfume has lasted about 3 years so far.

I still see it on Pacifica’s website, so I don’t think it’s been discontinued. It may just be a tough one to find. I’ve only ever seen it at a brick and mortar store one time.

Most times I don’t get licorice at all, and then sometimes it is the strongest note. It fascinates me that I can spray the same juice from the same bottle and the scent changes so much.

We both agreed to disagree, but I did inform him I would discuss it here.

Well, I’m sadly very unPC. Someone once said to me-

Him: “Oh, with a last name like that, you must be Irish.”

Me: “Yep, my dad was born and raised there and amazingly, he’s not a drunk or a crooked cop.”

      Him: Crickets.

Political Correctness done right is pretty much etiquette for the modern age. Like etiquette, it was meant to help people get along together and know how to set other people at ease, and like etiquette it can be weaponised by insecure people to put other people down.

Anyway, I occasionally will share a non-PC joke with TOMK but the key thing is that it is *knowingly* un-PC. The acid test is, do we both laugh and say we’re bad people and definitely going to hell.

Sometimes people I work with will make a gay joke or Irish joke, and I will cut people a lot of slack if I know them and we respect each other. I’m a lot less comfortable overhearing such jokes, or getting them directed at me from someone I barely know, because they haven’t established their good faith yet. Does that make sense?

I think because discrimination against gays occurred more frequently when I was a teenager (’70s), and I still have to put some homophobes in their place (a previous job, the bastion of jacka$$straight white men ).
I always was able to speak my mind, others sadly were not as willing to do so.
My Mother really took offense to the various Italian epithets.
One must pick their battles, I suppose.

        Makes perfect sense to me.

Years ago when my children were small enough that I pushed them down the sidewalks in a double stroller I met an elderly neighbor. I didn’t know him well at all and rarely saw him. He asked me if the children were twins. I said that they were 18 months apart in age. He said, “Oh, then they’re almost Irish twins.”

I had no idea what that meant. My family is part Irish so I wondered if he could tell by looking at us? But no, of course not. I just smiled and kept walking. I had a friend later tell me what Irish twins are. We had a good laugh at the whole thing.

But I can’t abide jokes about redheads, I’m protective of the gingers in our family. :)

I’m always torn about being unPC about one’s own background, eventhough I’ve admittedly partaken in that about my own ethnicity(Jewish).
We have dinner outings with a group of friends and one couple is a Jamaican lesbian married to a trangendered Jewish male from Long Island. They are completely irreverant and foul-mouthed and hilarious but I’m cautious with joining in on the jokes. I’ve had my share of people making jokes about my ethnicity and my reaction largely depends on who’s saying it, the context, and what I know about them and their views.

I agree, intention makes a big difference. If there is even a bit of ill will, it will be sensed and be offensive. I have to say, I thought it was very funny when my Hindu son-in-law who was emcee at my Christian daughter’s wedding to a Jewish man (the wedding was held in a gorgeous, rustic barn), opened the speeches with the line, “So a Hindu, a Jew, and a Christian walk into a bar…n”.

I think it can be very personal what we take offence to and what we don’t. For many years I allowed others to comment and joke about my height and weight and would even make excuses about it (high metabolism, I was always this way, etc, etc, etc). Now I am no longer as accepting of it for I ask them point blank “If I were a hundred pounds overweight and seven feet tall would you feel comfortable telling me how fat and giant I am?”….and yet there are other things that I let slide which I probably should not!…

I think if you let your friend know that it made you uncomfortable and you found it politically incorrect he should bear that in mind in your future conversations and respect YOUR boundaries whatever they may be. That’s just my opinion…..YMMV……

Good for you! My son was always in the 5th percentile for height and weight. “The wee sprog” was our nickname for him when he was growing up. Now that he is 10 inches taller than me but still thin as a rail, I never comment on his size or shape.

I also find that it depends on who tells the joke. The south here in the US is often made fun of as backward or redneck or hillbilly etc. (none of which describe me or most people in the city in which I live). I find I am not bothered by fellow southerners making jokes, but it does bother me when someone outside of the region does. For whatever reason it’s like family- I am allowed to make fun of my family or complain about them, but I’d better not hear anyone else doing it. ;)

Ambre is d/c, as is its follower Ambre Santal. I wish L’Occitane got rid of its habit of discontinuing scents all the time! I have a shower gel + body lotion duo of the latter that I use sparingly.

A cool and rainy day. Getting ready for another working day doing outdoor inspections. Wearing Kenzo Amour Indian Holi. I am going thru bottles that don’t get too much attention and I fear they might start evaporating. I also want to finish some of them to get room for new additions, so I will be spraying with abandon.

Indian Holi was the full bottle that got away…..liked what I smelled but never got around to purchasing it. No worries…plenty of other perfumes, right? You smell delicious :) And yes, use up what you love before it evaporates!!!!!

I meant to wear Portrait of a Lady, but grabbed the wrong decant in the dark and ended up with 31 Rue Cambon!

Unrelated — has anyone else ever been sniffing something new and going “ho-hum, clean floral, blah blah…wait, wait–is that skank?! That’s so…I can’t believe they put that much in a mass market frag….” and then you look down at your dog in shock…just as she farts a second time? ;)

Too funny! My dog’s not much of a farter, but when I put on perfume, she very deliberately and thoroughly sniffs me. Then, if the perfume calls for it, she starts to roll or rub all over me, tail wagging joyously! She’s my funk barometer ????

I’m wearing Eau de Camille for the first time today. It may qualify as a skin scent. I think though, that it is because the decant is a rollerball, rather than a spray. I’ve switched to rollerball decants because otherwise I overspray.

SOTD and genuine skin scent #1, inspired by my completely sane and rational fear of Hajusuuri, is Hermes “Rose Ikebana”.

Notes are: orange, spices, fruity notes, musk, cassia, tea, rose, lemon and rhubarb.

This one is crisp and fresh for a hot sunny day (which I am spending indoors with my best friend Excel). This is a FB from before my NST time, i.e. when I thought buying a 100ml bottle was a sensible thing to do.

Today is Corpus Christi and a public holiday in 6 of the 16 federal states (of Germany), including North Rhine-Westphalia where my client is based. So, I flew home last night and am working in my home office. The good news is, that means I can run upstairs and re-dose myself every few hours when it dies away to nothing. :^)

Difficult to imagine that there was a time when you thought you only needed a single perfume, and thus buying in bulk (i.e. a 100 ml bottle) was a smart move.

SOTD is Santal 33. Under the radar? Not so much.

Question: Have you ever had a memory of a scent, as in you can smell it in your mind, but you can’t place what it is or where you smelled it? This happened to me yesterday afternoon. I “smelled” a perfume in my memory but for the life of me I can’t figure out what it was. I was hoping it might have been Santal 33 but I’m not so sure. Memory is so ethereal and fleeting and I can’t recall it anymore to know if I guessed right. I’ve had similar scent experiences in dreams. When I wake up I want to smell that smell, but usually I can’t recall it or place it’s origin. Does this happen to anyone else?

The elevator in my building smells like Santal 33 because so many people wear it.

When I went to Italy when I was in high school on a school trip I brought with me a sample of Gio, this was the original, and sometimes I feel like I smell that in my dreams or have a scent memory even though I have smelled it since the 90’s.

Yes, that happens to me too! A fragrance will appear around the edges of my mind when I’m deeply involved in work or focused on a series of tasks. It’s disconcerting because if I think to hard about what it might be then I lose it! I have to wait and let it come to me. Then if I can’t think of the name of the scent I wander over to the perfume bottles and see if I can find it. Glad I’m not the only one. :)

I have to interact closely with people today so I’m wearing Un Jardin sur le Nil. It should be a skin scent pretty quickly.

Has anyone tried Tauer L’Eau yet? I read a review on Cafleurebon that made it sound pretty good–not too fleeting and with Andy’s signature touches.

No, but I desperately want to. A problem with cafleurebon is that they seem to like absolutely EVERYTHING, which makes me trust them less.

I have no idea how they operate, but it’s also possible they only review things they like. Kind of how Luca Turin did that with his blog- so as not to hurt the smaller businesses.

I did try it compliments of the ever generous perfumelover67. It’s nice: kind of a sweetish, powdery citrus with some woods in it. It does remind of of the orange or yellow Smarties. I wouldn’t quite call it “clean” or “refreshing”, though. It definitely has the Tauer stamp on it.

As Elisa P. says, it is not a refreshing citrusy scent as I was expecting. It is creamy, powdery, sweet (it is a Tauer, anyway) and has a lemony note that reminds me of lemon Pez candies. The sillage for 2 sprays is moderate. In terms of longevity, it does not last more than 3 hours on me. After 2 hours it becomes a skin scent. 3 hours later is gone. My skin sometimes is a perfume eater, so it could be different on someone else. I will wear it only in Springtime. It would be too overwhelming for me in Summer days, unless I crave for it. Nice and pleasant. I like it, but I do not love it.

Yes, I got a sample recently. I haven’t done a solo testing yet because is got sidetracked by Au Dela, but the one day I wore several samples, including this one, I really liked it (until my nose was burnt to a crisp from too much sniffy sniffy).

Have you tried any others? I seem to remember you had the Russian one, right? I think Scorza di Sicilia would be fantastic for the summer heat. Vanira Morrea is also a nice one for the summer…neroli and vanilla…delicious….

Knowing how to drive stick should come in handy should you decide to go back to France and drive around. Many years back, a friend of mine and I decided to drive from Paris to Burgundy. The only type of car available for rent was stick shift which precluded me from sharing in the driving. So what did hajusuuri do. Navigated! Except, because of my poor sense of direction AND, IIRC, once you get into the country, the street signs don’t really have street names; instead, they all have arrows pointing somewhere and “in the direction of (fill in the name of the next town)”. Needless to say, we made it to Burgundy and stayed in a castle converted to a bed & breakfast.

I should clarify and say because I navigated, we got lost but eventually found our way to Burgundy.

Today I am wearing and comparing vintage Opium from the late 80s/early 90s I got off the Bay of Evil and recent Opium from the past 5 years or so from a duty-free YSL mini set.

I have never worn Opium and bought the vintage mini to see what all the hullabaloo is about…perhaps the hullabaloo is old as I don’t see too many comment on wearing Opium in the daily poll.

By and large, they smell quite similar to me. The recent mini smells sharper and more synthetic to my nose. They both remind me of Cinnabar which a friend of mine worn in college…I think she stole it from her mother.

In terms of iconic, powerhouse orientals of the 70s and 80s, Opium and Cinnabar never wowed me in the way Coco did. I suppose notes-wise, Coco is a different beast than Opium and Cinnabar too.

I woke seek out more Opium but I do love smelling things from the 70s, 80s and 90s…chock full of dangerous ;) chemicals and banned ingredients…just the way the perfumer and God intended. :)

I worked with someone in 1979/1980 at my first job who wore Opium. Noticeable, and I loved it on her. So, of course I bought a bottle. I’m pretty sure I finished it, but I never felt it was “me.” I was all about green floral at that time.

Hello, NST. I’m serendipitously doing the project today because yesterday I bought –finally!–La Pausa. I’m simultaneously bathed head downwards in delicious dry elegance AND under the radar. I spent the 24th, my actual birthday, lying down in a dark room navigating my way through a migraine, so yesterday was LP day. Oh, how I love this perfume, and how very glad I am that I bought it.

Kanuka and I had a lovely play at Chanel, sniffing all the scent cones and the pure perfume oils. I was struck by how deep, and sometimes almost unpleasant, some of the oils smelt. Came away thinkng that although I love many, many perfumes from all over the perfume universe, if someone passed a law saying we could buy from only one house, I would have no problems about immediately registering Chanel as my perfume source.

So, I have a thing to do at work, and it behoves me to pootle off and do it. I have a towel (sprayed with La Pausa), so if I have to ward off the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatterbeast of Traal IV as I walk through the park, I’ll be just fine. I may not have recalled the name of that fabulous creature exactly, but Douglas Adams described it as monumentally stupid, so if I do meet one and mis-name it, it probably won’t notice. Be well, all.

I have a confession. I have become addicted to the word “pootle.” I have no idea why, but I love it. My mouth loves to say it and my ears love to hear it. I have a similar fondness for the word “parallel” simply because it makes my tongue skip around behind my teeth. Who’s a geek? I’m afraid I am. So, a belated “Thank You” to you Waterdragon, for teaching me a new word to love. T-Rex and I must now pootle outside to piddle. =)

I put on the last few drops of my decant of Amouage Journey Woman and have decided it is definitely NOT for me. I’ve been on the fence about it for some time now, but in our warm muggy weather it is kind of sickening. It has an aggressive sharp pointed honey note. I want to say cinnamon honey but it doesn’t list cinnamon as a note so it must be the cardamom/nutmeg combination. It’s like a needle in my nose. Goodbye to that!

Meanwhile I am the happy foster mother of four adorable fluffy four-week-old kittens! Two are little beige cream-puffs and two are tortie girls. They are all round and plump and illegally cute! So far, two are friendly explorers and two are still hissing at me. Lots of progress to be made here, including a flea bath very soon (poor babies).

I accidentally sprayed myself with 24 Fauborgh this morning, not exactly a skin scent. I quickly washed it off and and put on the originally intended Eau des Merveilles. I still had some 24 in my hair but I think they smelled pretty good together and no one at work complained. An accidental layering. ????

I did a second wearing of You, or Someone Like You today. The first wearing a couple of weeks ago was not auspicious – I could have sworn I smelled cat pee! Today’s wearing was much, much better – so much so that I’ve decided I actually like this minty-banana leaf-shiso concoction. (Cat pee lurked but was held in check by the mint and what I perceived to be softer citrusy notes; rose was AWOL…)

The daily mail the other day reminded me that I should wear Cedrat Enivrant more often, even though it fades so quickly I forget whether I’ve worn enough. Thanks to the wonderful Hajusuuri for my decant!

And while I didn’t comment on the thread, I loved Bear’s prompt on “unPC jokes” and the thoughtful discussion that followed. This really is such a great community!
