Friday scent of the day 4/7

Posted by Robin on 7 April 2017 338 Comments

Diptyque Jasmin illustration

Friday is here! Plus, World Health Day (the theme for 2017: depression) and No Housework Day and Billie Holiday's birthday. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with jasmine, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm radiating jasmine in Diptyque Essences Insensées 2015. When it fades a bit, I may add a dab of La Via del Profumo Tawaf.

Reminder: 4/14 will be Playlist Friday — name a favorite song, and wear a perfume that fits the song.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I bathed myself in SL A la Nuit at 4:30am. I had a very early start today. At this point it is almost gone. Very fleeting, but really beautiful for the time it lasts. Happy Friday everyone!

Can I tell my partner about No Housework Day?

Billie Holiday, I would listen to her a lot when I lived in San Francisco and the fog would role in..

SOTD is 1932 thanks to generous She-ra who gave me a sample. I smell fab!!! Why haven’t I tried this before?

Reading the WSJ this morning and holding everyone in my hearts during these turbulent time. I wish perfume was the answer.

So I’m a total fail today. I had planned on Yves Rocher’s Tendre Jasmine, but I wore it last night and, frankly, scratched that itch. Passage d’Enfer was calling my name this morning and I just couldn’t resist the Siren call.

It smells wonderful and is my favorite of the four. I think Tel Aviv and Brooklyn will be great for summer. I’m a guy that enjoys floral notes. I’m still on the fence regarding London.

Yeah, it’s not really a jasmine powerhouse like A La Nuit or vintage Samsara (which I was going to wear but I had to go to work and it would have been just too much), but I love the balance between the florals and the grimy-ashy tobacco. Plus unlike a lot of Etat scents it’s really durable: almost twelve hours later and I can still smell it on my skin.

Twins! On me the jasmine is crisp and green and the ash tray is there underneath adding an interesting contrast but isn’t overwhelming. Happily wore it at work all day.

You are too kind Oakland and incredibly generous…but I am graciously going to decline your offer….I have been turning down all offers because I am sort of on a downsizing roll….I was just curious as to whether there was similarities between the two and I know that mals is quite familiar with both scents which was why I asked.

            But thank you again! 🙂

        • mals86 says:
          7 April 2017 at 5:07 pm

You know, in theory I can see there might be a similarity because they’re both floral chypres.

But in reality? not many points of congruence. You’re right, I do love Plum, and I have not smelled *proper* Victoria in decades (all the ebay purchases I’ve made, all four of them, have gone off*) — but I remember it quite well and lusted over it for so long. Would go into the store and sniff it even when I was far too broke to even buy a pair of panties.

          * The fact that none of the bottles I”ve tried since 2009 or so were even close to smelling right, and all had this bizarre maple syrup/swimming pool effect that was not there and not meant to be there when the scent was new, leads me to believe that Victoria did not age well, and that along with its old-fashioned elegance kept it from being rereleased in some proper fashion. (Of course, now that they’ve released a different fragrance under that name, original Victoria is Gone Baby Gone. Boo.)

Thank you so much for chiming in! The bottle I have smells similar enough to my nose to the 5 full bottles I drained over the years. A co-worker of mine had it and kept it in pristine condition and then gifted it to me as she never used it. Perhaps you are right in that it is not a scent that can age well.

Good to know that there aren’t that many similarities between Victoria and Plum. I knew you would be able to answer this question 🙂

I really need to try Tawaf, soon!!!

I am wearing a modest spritz of TF Jasmin Rouge today.
I had a work meeting/visit this aftenoon with people I’ve never met before, so I had to keep it kinda decent.

Tonight I will start the weekend in Sarrasins though. 🙂

I’m wearing Le Parfum de Therese, though I get more spicy fruits than flowers out of it. My decant of A La Nuit is still on the way, otherwise I would have worn it!

I had jasmine in my wedding bouquet two weeks ago. 🙂 Most of it bloomed during the night and morning afterwards, like magic!

Twins! Wish I had the vintage EDT but this fairly new version smells great and plenty scanky. Plus I showered with Lush flying fox then spread Korres jasmine lotion all over my body before applying the Joy. Once again I am glad I have my own office (my secretary came in to speak with me a few minutes ago and while he didn’t say anything he did look surprised but maybe that was just my imagination).

Mine is vintage EDT too (although just a decant), and I agree with Ede97005: it’s a drug. Because even though I can’t say I love this scent 100% (there is some mustiness I could do without), it makes me ridiculously happy – I just can’t stop smiling.

I’m not very good at sussing out individual notes and am probably just imagining it, but I think I can smell the jasmine note that’s allegedly in IP. In any case, it’s a very pretty, subtle and office-appropriate scent. That sounds dull and uninteresting, does’t it. 😉

So indecisive this morning! Cold, grey days can be so uninspiring sometimes. I did think about wearing the Diptyque Jasmin this morning but I have so little left that I decided this weather was unfit for it. Went with Rodin but the weather is failing this one, too, and by now I can hardly smell it so I added my sample of Durga floating around in my bag. Sweet, juicy, fruity. I’m enjoying!

SOTD is Carthusia “Gelsomini di Capri”, which is not so much climbing aboard the Jasmine Train, as being tied to the rails and having it roll over me.

    Top: Jasmine (You don’t say!), geranium, ylang-ylang and cloves;
    Mid: Orange blossom and cedar;
    Base: beeswax, vanilla and rose.

In fairness, after both my alarm clock and my watch let me down this morning, I’ve spent the day feeling like I’ve been hit by a train. So maybe this is the floral wreath to go with it.

Considered Sarrasins, but since I hated it the first time, I’m loath to try again.
    Then thought of 1932.
But my sweater has traces of Le Temps d’une Fete on it and now I’m craving more LTdF — which at least HAS some jasmine in it, perceptible even to me, even though it’s a grace note in the composition and not the focus.

So there it is. Not sorry.

    Friday!

    *looks at news* Sigh.

    1) Am in Le Jardin de Monsiuer Li- a very watery citrus/jasmine/mint (from a sample). I always feel like this is best in humid, hot weather, where other jasmine based fragrances would just be far too smothering and far too much. Wish it was priced $20 less and came in really big bottles so you can keep it in the fridge.

    2) Coffee with almond milk, oatmeal, cheese, avocado- little bits of this and that. Later on, swimming!

    3) Just in time: I got a 3% raise! Was not expecting it. I won’t see it anyways- I will just kick it into savings- but it’s nice!

No problem! The idea is to increase stamina and energy and rely less on processed foods and alcohol (which in too large amounts can fatigue you).

Ah yes, the processed food (which in my case is too many sweets!)…..I am taking notes on what you are eating…(meanwhile simultaneously salivating as I was reading about Bear’s lovely holiday foods-LOL!) Do you find that you crave the naughty stuff from time to time? I think my body is probably addicted to sugar at this point.

I am scent twins with Bear, wearing Lush Lust. I rarely wear this, since it is not very office friendly, but whenever I do I remember how much I like it. I will never have a full bottle, however, since I am still using up a travel spray purchased in 2013.

Samsara! Never even occurred to me as a possibility for wear today, and I was racking my brains and mostly reduced to samples because my frag wardrobe doesn’t have much jasmine-focused stuff in it.

You know, it’s funny. The jasmine in Samsara, for me, is very much overpowered by rose — I smell both but it’s the rose and sandalwood that take my attention. I have the opposite experience with Joy, which is nearly all skanky jasmine and barely any rose. Weird, huh? Maybe I should do a side-by-side with those two and see what happens.

When I was younger I thought of Joy as a rose scent, but as I get older (or my bottle does, or both) it seems more and more dominated by jasmine. Samsara has always been jasmine and sandalwood to me, though (and I bought it when it was launched so I have been wearing it for a long long time!).

It’s winter here again today… cold, rainy, windy. If I were to wear a jasmine scent today, I’d pick Kilian Love & Tears, but… winter. SOTD is Sonoma Scent Studios Amber Incense.

LAST CHANCE!! Oakland Fresca and I are headed to Tiger Lily’s Skunk Works event tomorrow. Anyone in the SF Bay area want to join us?

Andy Tauer will be there with his you-can-buy-them-in-person-only scents, Hyacinth & the Mechanic, plus the two new story scents, described here: https://www.fragrantica.com/news/Tauerville-Stories-Two-New-Scents-Capturing-a-Moment-in-Time-9285.html

So, if anyone is desperately dying to get these, I’m willing to mule them for you. Caveats: I don’t know what they cost; I don’t know if he’ll run out; I don’t know if there will be a limit on how many one person can buy. But if you’re interested, ping me at emc dawt 7 1 1 7 in the land of geeeeemail.

Also, update on my Essenza Nobile debacle: After yet another round of “where’s my order?” “oops, we forgot to order it / or the supplier forgot to send it to us” (yes, I got both excuses in one email) I asked them to cancel the order and refund my money. And they did, no fuss about the refund. I won’t be ordering from them again…

I have to attend the funeral of one of my students tomorrow, and it’s been very emotionally difficult all week at school – it’s amazing how connected people become without realizing it, and when a connection is severed suddenly, how lost everyone can feel.

Wishing peace to all. Thanks for smelling incredible.

Today I am wearing OJ Sampaquita. I had to look up jasmine note perfumes last night to try to find something I own with it in and discovered this is based on a kind of jasmine–sambac jasmine. It’s a very pretty scent, light and floral, happy. I only have two FB Ormond Jaynes, OJ Woman and Ta’if, but would consider this one too.

In Houston this week we have had absolutely glorious spring weather, highs in the low 80’s, perfect blue skies, no humidity (after several weeks of too-hot, too-humid early “spring”). It is the time of year that jasmine blooms in climbing vines along fences everywhere. Banks and banks of it, it’s in masses along under the huge live oak trees at my grocery store, so abundant! You can drive with your windows open (a rarity here) and the smell of jasmine wafts in–it’s wonderful! And so often is mingles with the smell of BBQ coming from some of the many joints here along the streets. Ah, Texas! Now that would be a fragrance! Jasmine + Barbecue!

Intended to wear CB I Hate Perfume Jasmine Sambac today, but it is so cold and miserable, I ended up in by Killian Amber Oud instead.
Someone sent me a little sample of Lys Soleia, and I enjoyed that very much. A lot of lilies give me allergy twitches, but this did not. So eager for spring. It is supposed to get up into the 70’s here over the weekend. I can hardly wait to start gardening. 🙂

SotD: The sadly discontinued EL Jasmine White Moss. I am wearing a bit from a solid perfume to keep the scent close to the body. I was so-so on the new moss accord, but it has grown on my in the years since its release.

S(ip)otD: Lupicia Momo Oolong, which is a greenish pouchong style oolong with Japanese white peach and rose petals. It is a beautiful tea, but I think I like it better iced.

Kanuka, I basically stopped searching for jasmine after I found the A la Nuit. J’Adore l’Absolu was for old time’s sake, because I loved the original 1999 J’Adore and thought l’Absolu might be a replacement. It sort of is. There are several other J’Adores that I have not tried. That’s a project in itself!

For me, jasmine has two very strong memory associations …so strong they override any new responses that might form.
The first is the smell of my friend’s outside long drop toilet at her bach ( holiday home) a corrugated iron shed covered in jasmine. It got very hot in summer so the jasmine was very powerful but so was the ‘decay’ of the toilet contents … A brilliant combination.

The second is Fenjal bath creme , which came in tiffany blue bottles.

Wearing Ys-Uzac BOM Jasmine from a free sample. It smells like a half way point between these two things. We always shared the bathwater when we were kids so this is what fenjal bathcreme would smell like if you were fourth in line for the water ( which I usually was).

      Oh my.

A couple of summers ago, I was driving in the early evening with the windows down. Got a whiff of something floral and said to myself, “Now why am I smelling jasmine? It’s too late for honeysuckle and locust blossoms…” Then the smell changed and I realized that my neighbor had just spread manure on his field.

      Yep.

Keiko Mechieri Jasmine for the challenge, and a little Chene on my shoulders, for comfort (for me). And the combination is actually working out! KM Jasmine is delightful but not a long-laster, and I’m expecting the Chene to go the distance…

It’s a bright, green and “fresh” jasmine, but not sweet or dumbed-down. I found a partial bottle at a thrift store for $3.99, so I’m happy to send you a bit. I think it might be d/c’ed in this form, though I’m unsure. It has a faded leather label.

I’m wearing ELDO’s Jasmine et Cigarette, and am not entirely happy with my choice. Bit too soapy, and jasmine, while realistic in the top notes, is becoming more artificial. Will probably wear some Tunisian jasmine oil to bed tonight.

That one smells to me exactly like a friend from college, who was a fellow smoker and wore Samsara. I don’t dislike it, but it’s a little too evocative.

Hi Elisa P!Thank you!Yes,it is a good-sized golf estate, very security-orientated.The oldest country club in the city is on the premises. The streets and areas are named after famous golfers from the past, like the part I live in is called Sarazen View,(I had to google every legendary golfer as I really had no clue!Lol). You cross the Hennops river about 12 times on the 18-hole course, and the on-site restaurants/hair salon and gym makes it just better. It’s been little over a week and I am in love with this place!X

Hi, everyone. This turned out to be Sleep-in Saturday, thanks to Dakkie the Wailer! We finally got some sleep when the dear one took himself off to the spare bedroom and let Dakkie sleep on him, sort of draped over his legs. Turns out that’s what was needed, but it can’t be a long-term solution.

I had planned to wear Alien Extraordinaire, but so much jasmine felt just too much today– I have to be on my game to rock that kind of perfume power. I’m in the soft happiness of Queen instead, for a day of housework and other domestic stuff. It probably has jasmine in it somewhere, but I’m so bone idle right now that I can’t be bothered looking.

    Be safe and well, NST.

There are therapy animals and there are those who just pretend to be therapy animals. I’ve observed abuses of that privelege, considering the soze, shape and type of animal claimed by the owner.

Difficult week for me. Son and his worldly possessions were finally reunited at the Amman airport this evening, Jordan time. Vacillating between compulsive news watching and binging on middling Aussie TV murder mystery show.

Outfit of the day is coffee stained red sweater and stretched out olive-colored slacks sprinkled with cat hair. Not my finest.

Perfume is Prima T, which really is perfect for someone thin, tan, and elegant in white linen pants and a simple collared white silk shirt. My Jasmine scented fantasy on this grey rainy day.

Curious about your Aussie Tv murder mystery show…I love murder mysteries and am always on the lookout for new ones…still working my way through Midsomer Murders now that netflix has added seasons 17-19.

There were 19 seasons of a murder mystery show?

I find that middling tv combined with mindless games along the lines of Panda Pop will ameliorate my tendency to grind my teeth to nubs. Chances are, all will be well. Tip for calming your breathing: instead of taking a deep breath in, try blowing all the air out of your lungs, continuing to exhale until you feel your abdomen going back toward your spine.

SOTD = SL Al A Nuit, from a dabber sample. Given how potent and narcotic this is dabbed on me, I wonder what spraying it would be like! It is a lovely counterpoint to today’s kind of yucky weather.

I started my Jasmine Friday in the remains of the jasmine-civet explosion of Amouage Opus IX spritzed last night. (I started early because I was afraid wearing a fresh dose out in public today might cause people to pass out.????) I intended to top it up with some Alien from off-site storage, but there wasn’t any, so I went with the Michael Kors Glam Jasmine that was available.

Happy Friday and Happy Weekend, all you wonderful NSTers!

    Hello, fragrant Friday folks!

SotM = Songes Songes Songes and more Songes. Songes, my love for you is never ending.

SotA = Terracotta Le Parfum. Boom BOOM loads of flowers in the room.

SotE = tbd, something comfy for certain, but what?

Scent of yesterday = Romanza from a sample. Romanza has a lovely spring feeling but with depth, some darkness, and a bitter edge. A cerebral sniffing experience.

No extra credit for me but I am wearing something that contains jasmine, not that I could smell but Fragrantica said so.

SOTD = Guerlain Mon Precieux Nectar

This came into my life last year when I split a bottle last year. I have about 30 mLs left but will likely buy a BUB the next time I get a deal!

Looking forward to everyone’s selection. I have never been excited about jasmine-forward perfumes but may check out whatever the fuss is about with the popular ones.

Yesterday, I got onto a crowded train and was surprised to find an empty 2-seater. Another woman and I got there at the same time but because she was thin enough to slide under a door, she slipped in ahead of me and claimed the window seat. No big deal; I sat on the aisle seat. She looked like she was about to say something to me when a guy, whom I assumed was her boyfriend, came by and started talking to her. I turned to her and asked if she wanted to switch places, to which her response was “No, I’ll just talk over you.” What? It took every ounce of my willpower to not lash out with YOU UGLY B-TCH WTF. The boyfriend, sensing me bristle, wisely decided to go a bit further into the train. I really wanted to spend the entire ride facing her and staring at her but I decided she was not worth my time. The rest of the trip was uneventful.

I’ve toyed with the idea of a blog (or more properly an instagram, I suppose) entitled “No Comment” that posts photos (or short videos) of such atrocities. Also oversized McMansions in otherwise pretty neighborhoods, obese people wearing leopard print tights as leggings, lawn care company guys wasting time chasing a single leaf with leafblowers, unshoveled sidewalks, various subway offenses, etc. ????

Today I joined what I assume will be a crowd in Alien. I really like it, but wearing it is something of a commitment. A mini feels like about as much of it as I need. Alien Essence Absolue I find easier to wear, and I may need more than the mini I currently have. I still haven’t figured out if the underwhelming Alien flanker I tried at Nordstrom last month is the new one or the previous one. Anyone care to weigh in on their favorite flanker?
