Tuesday scent of the day 3/7

Posted by Robin on 7 March 2017 326 Comments

Tuesday! Which at least means Monday must be over, right? (It's also Crown Roast of Pork Day, which is too much trouble for a Tuesday, and Cereal Day, which is less trouble but not very exciting.) What fragrance are you wearing?

The perfect match for a gin teapot would presumably be Demeter Gin & Tonic or Penhaligon's Juniper Sling, but I went with (boozy but not gin) Lush All Good Things.

Reminder: on 3/10 we're taking the Booze Cruise...wear a perfume with a booze note. Suggested by Koenigsberg.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is a "G 'n' Tea tea set" ("Put the party back into tea-party with this tease of a tea-set! 1x 4 cup ' GIN' teapot, 2x 'GIN' teacup and 1x 'TONIC' milk jug."), £87.50 at Product Of Your Environment.

SOTD Sylvaine Delacourte Florentina. I am enjoying the not-quite-gourmand almond/vanilla mix. It goes well with my morning coffee ;)

It is a tad sweet for me, and there isn’t anything very interesting going on.. so yes, meh as well. Since it’s a simple office friendly scent I will happily finish the vial, but it’s not FB worthy for me.

I am more excited to wear similar almond/vanilla/tonka scents from the recent split meet that are closer to my preferences: Jo Malone Myrrh & Tonka and Prada Infusion d’Amande :D

Wow, first! I fail the boozy challenge as the warm (55) damp weather called out for violets, so I am wafting Apres l’Ondee.

I went through my samples last night to find anything with a boozy note and wasn’t terribly successful. The principal and parents at my school might not like me “smelling like a brewery” as my mother would say, so I’m in Iris Nobile.

    My ! What a lovely tea se………screeeeeeeeechhhh ! BANG !
    Shaking head, clearing it. :D
    Triple strength coffee!
Album of the day, for an extra long workout, because the music is rockin’ Station to Station- David Bowie.
    Maximum volume is NOT enough.
M7 YSL- vetiver, oudh, a small amount of amber beneath.
    :)
    Carpe Diem. Peace.
    Favorite cereal: yellow box Cheerios.
    Honey Nut ? No, thanks.

        Vintage.
Stocked up when I saw it at Macys years ago.
Knew it was too good for the mainstream department store customers.
        Discontinued.
        All brown monolithic bottle.

          Smart move! :)

I’ve read some reviews of the vintage/first edition and it sounds like something I’d like or love.
I am not very impressed by the new formula by the way, a bit dull.

Fantastic. At what point in your perfume journey did you figure out a great decision like stocking M7
      as you did?

I was familiar with oudh from an Ajmal oudh I had purchased in 2001.
When M7 was released in 2002 it was more ‘wearable’, the Ajmal is beautiful, but VERY fecal.
        A few years later, M7 wasn’t a blockbuster, so……..time to stock up.
        No regrets.
And I like oudh, Dior Leather Oud is another favorite.

Coffee, yes, I need at least three cups, strong and black, to wake me up.
After lunch, Jasmine tea to accompany A la nuit. :)

Hah, I absolutely loathed both N-Cigale Black Lavender and 1907 Vanilla- the latter I think is probably a well done gourmand and just not for me, but Black Lavender I got 30 minutes in before I had to take a shower to scrub it off and flee the other way because of the sweetness assault.

I actually think that’s a huge positive in a subscription box, though! The variety is wide enough to provide some interesting experiences and I’d rather have 50/50 loves and scrubs than six “pretty good”s

Lubin Korrigan. I dug out the sample I got because of all of the NST kudos. When I tried it last year, I thought it was too masculine. I really like it today- it’s the scent of an elegant cocktail bar with comfy leather sofas, dark finished wood walls, and fragrant patrons.

Dark roast drip coffee today. I may need to attempt french press!

All the talk of green perfumes yesterday had me pull out my Heure Exquise decant. It’s hitting the spot on this drizzly day. I’m still in a phase where my tolerance for anything sweet is pretty low, which is at least having me use stuff in my collection I’ve been neglecting.

Same here. I got a sample a while back and it lasted like a few minutes on me. I can’t even recall what it smells like because it didn’t last on me. And for me, longevity is everything. If it doesn’t last on me, I don’t buy it.

I was wondering if the spray bottle helped a bit. I’ve noticed a lot that sampling from a spray bottle or a sample vial makes a difference to me. I LOVED it though- the opening and the dry down- so maybe I’ll see if I can find a spray sample and try it again before I shell out for the fb.

Not boozy, but wearing Odin Petrana. On my skin it’s a WALL of powdery violet and iris, very dense, and very strong and long lasting. There’s no AIR in it, no space between the notes. Someone said that it’s a ‘dog whistle’ of a perfume, and I agree with that assessment– there’s just something about it that is a bit too much. I almost love it but not quite.

Taking a half day at work because my sitter’s out sick, so I’m able to participate in the NST SOTD. Woot!

    Happy Tuesday!

    1) Finally- I got the estimate for getting the damage repaired to my home. It happens to be LESS than what the insurance adjuster estimated, and plus my carpet was deemed to be in excellent condition! So it will be : ceiling patch and paint job, carpet cleaning and pad replacement with an anti microbial. Total cost should be around $1000-$1500.

    The insurance company paid $3000!

    2) SOTD: Eau Universalle from L’Occitane, and a new deodorant: Rose Vanilla from Schmidts. Am doing this because saw it on sale. Verdict: I smell very good indeed, like the very best hug from an auntie combined with the freshness of the cologne from an uncle!

Booze cruise! SOTD is CBIHP 2nd Cumming: whiskey, dirt, and leather, mmmm. I was going to save this for Friday, but why wait?

More on yesterday’s test of new BdI vs old: I have always had very little longetivity from the old BdI LE, and yesterday was no different; the new EdP was definitely stronger. Interestingly though, post-shower, I could still smell the old EdT’s sandalwood on my skin, while the EdP was completely gone. Hmm.

Off-topic: yesterday I noticed that FIF has upped their minimum for free shipping to the US from 300 euros to 650…! And shipping for orders less than 650 is 59 euros…!! Won’t be buying there anymore. Does anyone have recommendations for other European fragrance stores that will ship to the US? I know about Essenze Nobile… any other sources?

It’s been a few years since I bought from them, but I was very pleased with Celeste Parfums in the Haag. Shipping wasn’t free on my order (under $200), but they sent a large number of very nice samples, equivalent to the shipping cost at that point in time, really.

FiF told me first time that it was an issue with paperwork, and the second time, that there have been customs changes and they need to get a new shipping carrier. I asked for a refund, which they did – but they issued a store credit and took 5% off as fees. I ended up filing a dispute with PayPal (original form of payment) and got my money back, but their service has gone downhill. It would take 3 attempts for any of the emails to be answered and there was zero clarity in their answers. I was very disappointed

Chanel 19 edt for me today, because I had cravings for it.
Question for skin junkies/experts out there: Any good recommendations for serum and moisturizer for oily/combination skin? ( I am 37 years old)
Over the week I used a sample of Erno Laszlo Phormula 3-9 repair Serum- this stuff is pure magic! My skin became bright and luminous, younger looking, pores shrunk, less blackheads on the nose. My skin doesn’t look oily anymore, BUT THE PRICE! OUCH! $ 275 for 1oz is waaay out of my budget.
I read couple articles on skincare products and checked out reviews on makeupalley, but there are so many choices, it is really overwhelming. Where do I start?
Currently I am using Vichy foaming cleanser ( which i like) and Vichy Aqualia Thermal Cream ( which is too heavy and is a better fit for dry skin, not combination/ oily).

Maybe you should look into the SkynIceland line. I’m sure that they have something for combination skin. I use the Cloud moisturizer since it’s not heavy and oily along with the glacial cleanser. What’s great is that it doesn’t break the bank like some lines do.

Thank you for suggestion Dawn! I looked up this line at dermstore and makeupalley- good reviews for products and the price is reasonable. I have no idea where to try it though, as Sephora doesn’t carry it.
I wish there was an online store like STC that was selling skincare (manufactured) samples, because blind buying skincare products could be deadly for the wallet.
I will keep an eye open for Skyn Iceland products.

Most skincare/cosmetics dot coms take returns of used products, so you could think of full-size purchases as samples.

Ouch ..you can buy a lot of perfume with that amount of money.
No officiations to any of these recommendations:

I use Paula’s choice, it is expensive but she often has specials every once in awhile. You can order samples of some of their products to try. Ordinary serums get a lot positive feedback and they will not break the bank. I use a oil from Odacite

Do you ever read BdJ Victoria’s blog? Here is a post that you may want to glance over. http://boisdejasmin.com/2017/01/my-skincare-routine-layering-technique.html
Victoria is great and some of her recommendations have saved me money and I am very happy with my skin

I second the recommendation for Paula’s Choice: you can order many of the products in travel size to test and see if it works for you. Also, they have a separate Beautipedia (or something like that) site where specialists review other brands’ products. Of course, it depends on whether you trust that site or not but they’ve been around for a while, and I guessed that if they were not telling the truth about those big brands’ products that they criticized (there are positive reviews as well), they would have been forced to take those down.

I found Paula’s Choice through the BdJ blog when I asked for a lotion for my bumpy skin on my arms during one of Victoria’s lotion posts. After that, I started dipping my toes into their skin care and haven’t looked back.

LOL! I have read the same article plus several more from BdJ and already placed an order for 4 The Ordinary products (serums, moisturizers and hand cream) from Deciem last week. They are swamped with orders and promissed to ship mine within 10 business days. Can’t wait for my package to arrive!
I also read couple articles on skincare from Anniky’s blog and will be making to try list for myself. :)
Thank you for mentioning Paula’s Choice. I believe she has travel sized offers on her web site. Will do more reading to figure out what will suit me best.

Both companies also welcome questions, and if you email their customer service with your skincare concerns, they will respond with their recommendations.

I use the Estee Lauder line for my skincare regimen. I’m 43 and have been using it for 20 plus years. They have products that addresses all skin issues. The best thing about EL is that they always have some sort of GWP special going on. So, you get a lot of goodies for your money. Some might say it’s a little much, but it is nowhere near what you are paying. And, I have no affiliation with EL.

        Hi Scentfromabove!
I cannot tell you how many times I wanted to get EL generous GWP just to try their skincare, but I could never figure out what to buy in the first place since I am not familiar with EL skincare, don’t use any makeup and don’t need any of EL scents. Maybe I’ll get some basic cleansers to try, as I noticed EL is carrying some travel sizes now.
        Thank you for your input!!!

If you go to EsteeLauder.com, you can get information on every product they make. They tell you what that product addresses, who and what it’s good for, etc.
Take a look at it when you get a moment. They also have consultants that will chat with you online about the products.

SotD is cocktail Commodity Whisky + Gold — my intention was to smell like a rye Manhattan for booze week but mostly I smell like patchouli and vanilla. So far I have not been impressed with Commodity. I picked up the cocktail kit because the SAs at Sephora were very excited to be stocking the brand, but mostly my reaction has been a bit of a shrug.

It’s wet, rainy and gray outside today, so I reached for a comfort scent that has a little bit of a lift. That is Chanel no 5 EDT, current formulation. Still haven’t heard anything back from Saks Fifth about Liu or L’Heure de Nuit but the lemming is starting to pass, mainly due to the price tag. Might go with SDV.

My SOTD is Slumberhouse’s Pear & Olive. It is described as: the bitter booziness of grape tissue from French white cognac oil, the wet & earthy hues of zdravets crowned with the rich, velvety green gem of the very rare aglaia absolute.

Dior New Look 1947. It smells good.

Yesterday I tested Puredistance Sheiduna and was appalled to find it has that spiky horseradish-wood note that I can’t stand. What a waste! I also tried a couple of the Saufs, but they didn’t seem to last (just dauber sampling) and I didn’t form very clear impressions yet.

Contrabombarde 32 started out as a sweaty, resinous incense – pretty much exactly the way you’d expect Filippo Sorcinelli to smell, based on photos and videos of him. ;)

So very strange. I sprayed on Natori today, which normally is noticeable and lasts on me. It’s been less than 2 hours, and I get nothing. The heavy cap went missing sometime back, so I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I was hoping for some strong plummy goodness, but I think my little bottle has died. Weird. I do have a shrink wrapped back up though. Hope that’s still okay.

Have you tried smelling anything else? I occasionally have days when I just can’t smell much of anything, which I confirm by seeing if any of the heavy-hitters in my collection make an impact.

Saving my only boozy scent for Friday and spending the rest of the week preparing for summer by testing some colognes. Up today: Eau Sauvage (the original, I think?). Went on very 1970s (someone I knew as a child def wore this) but it’s not particularly savage once it settles down – reminds me of lemon Lifesavers. Good thing I love lemon . . .

I don’t have anything particularly boozy, other than a small sample of Slumberhouse’s Kiste, and that’s not safe for work – inspired by this week’s theme, I tried it again one evening recently and, like last time I tried it, I feel as if I’ve fallen into a vat of Southern Comfort. I drank too much of that in my misspent youth to want to smell like that now :)

So Incense Mythique d’Orient for me today. Another favourite I haven’t worn for a while.

I had the same experience with Kiste – it was straight bourbon on my skin. I could get the same effect for a lot less drinking a few shots of Bulleit! I wish I had experienced any of the other notes that were supposed to be there.

Yesterday I was running around so I ended up with a single woman’s dinner (I forgot to defrost anything in the morning): Chips, salsa, and chocolate cake. It was delightful. Today’s SOTD is Sarrasins, my only bell jar, and well worth every penny.

My options for Friday have just doubled since Aparatchick says Queen has a booze note. I have a bottle!

Hello! I’m really, properly late today because I slept until — gasp!– 7.25! My first meeting has had to be postponed, my outfit is a scramble and looks rather haphazard, and my hair is ummm, idiosyncratic (that would be a compassionate word), but I am beautifully perfumed. Of course I am. Wearing No. 22, because it smells organised and pulled together. It’s not boozy, but it is gorgeous. I needed gorgeousness more than booze today, though the booze might come later! Be well–gotta madly dash now.

Today I’m testing MFK APOM Poir Femme. Lovely.

Is anyone participating tomorrow in A Day Without A Woman? I wonder how big it will be…

I sampled APOM yesterday. Sadly for me, I got soap and lots of cedar (the latter being a note that my skin hugely amplifies most of the time.). I can see how it would smell great on someone else though!

My skin tends to do the same thing with wood notes, so I was a bit concerned after I saw you mention that yesterday. Luckily, it seems to behave on me. What I *am* getting is a tight accord of the orange blossom and cedar, just like the one I get with the orange blossom and jasmine I get from FK’s Elie Saab Le Parfum. Ooh, now I’m wondering what it would be like to layer the two…

I love APOM. Such a good one. I am participating tomorrow, but more involuntarily. I am out again for so much swelling in my knees. But, I work at a school where 98% of the staff are women. Wonder how that would be………

Ha, well, you could call it “cooperating” instead of involuntarily participating.????

I’ve seen mention of several schools planning on closing for the day for that very reason–and not, they hasten to stress, as any sort of political statement but out of security concerns from not having enough staff. As if that weren’t a foreseeable (let alone desired) effect of a strike.

SOTD is 4160 Tuesdays “Up the Apple & Pears”.

    Top: hops, apple, pear and gin;
    Mid: whiskey and woody notes;
    Base: bread.

I really just get sweet-sour green apples and spices from this one – it’s very pleasant though.

If this were a cruise, it would be a canal narrowboat on the Birmingham-Worcester canal, drifting past orchards on the way to the river Severn. But the pubs along the way would be closed. :^)

Sweet-sour green apples and spices sounds nice. I do quite dislike bready notes in perfume, though. I pick it up occasionally from some powdery roses so I can’t tell if it’s from the powder or rose (more likely powder, I guess.)

Sounds like you’re not getting too much bread, though. (I feel like the only thing missing from the notes list is cheese – making it a great picnic spread ;) )

I’m wearing Apollo Hyacinth. Oh boy, does this hit the spot for me! My 10 ml from the splitmeet will disappear in no time. Even though I got into vanilla and gourmands this last year, I still feel an incredible affinity for bright green scents and how they conjure up Spring, hope, renewal, mystery and magic for me.

I have only 1 boozy perfume in my entire collection of bottles, decants, and samples, so that will be saved for Friday. Instead, I’ve been testing a few vintage samples out of the sample stash. Today’s pull was vintage Narcisse Noir EdT. I have learned that I need to apply it with some restraint…

Before I forget, I ought to award Hajusuuri something to add to her enabler’s tiara. I decided to get a sample set from Andy Tauer, based on what I had experienced from the sample of Incense Rose that she had given me. Time to expand my knowledge!

Ha! Put the party back into tea-party. Indeed. I’ll play along:

SotDs = infinite tea + intoxicating citron (Oolang Infini + Cedrat Enivrant). Each is wonderful alone plus they work well together. I enjoy many of the Atelier scents but have not bought a bottle. I must use up these samples.

Today a sample of Alaia Blanche reminded me of another scent. It took me a while to think of it: E & J Vanilla Bourbon.

Hope you are enjoying a terrific Tuesday, NST. You smell fabulous.

I’ve been curious about the other Alaia versions since I love the original so much. Sounds like the Blanche doesn’t have much in common with the edp? I enjoy a bit of Nirvana Bourbon occasionally but I get a really strong note of aged liquor/wine barrels that can be a overwhelming sometimes.

I tried the black bottle Alaia edp at the same time as Blanche. They were not similar to my nose. First time trying both though, and I only had a smidgen of each. I’m conservative when spritzing a new scent.

Nirvana Bourbon is a little boozy for me. I often spritz it on when I see a tester, but so far I’m not moved to buy it.

Late to post but read comments early this a.m. which led me to jump aboard the Alahine train, and it’s about gone now. I am in the “like but not love” camp, though I do enjoy the deep drydown much more than the opening. Barhane I do love, though, and if I found a good deal on a bottle I’d be very tempted.

I transitioned my winter perfumes into storage a few weeks ago and swapped them out for spring and transitioning-to-spring scents. Boy did I jump the gun on that. Spring is never warm (or nice) where I live, but it’s back to full-on dead-of-winter temps. Nasty, icy winds, and near-freezing temps. In fact, my hands are so cold right now it’s hard to type.

    So, back to winter perfumes…

Cruising along in the Booze Cruise! But first, I need to report that I smelled Box of Eels in the wild on my commute home.

SOTD = Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille

I have a decant with a wonky sprayer and I finally transferred it to a new one. Three sprirzes were potent enough for me to keep it there but it whimpered out after 5 hours. Phooey!

I did take cereal to work for my breakfast but it was our Cake Day for the birthdays of the month. So instead I had a small piece of Carmel mousse cake and fresh fruit. I’m still experimenting with flying under the radar with perfume at work, no one seemed to notice again. Today I had a drop of Beloved on my wrist from a sample. Wow, just lovely. I think that it helped me focus a bit better ;)
