Friday scent of the day 2/17

Posted by Robin on 17 February 2017 327 Comments

Bvlgari, campaign image for Omnia Paraiba

Happy Reverse Hemisphere Friday! Our community project for today: if you're in the Northern Hemisphere, wear something bright and tropical and happy. If you're in the Southern Hemisphere, wear something spicy and warm and comforting.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm doing (fantasy) Brazil in Bvlgari Omnia Paraiba.

Reminder: on 2/24, wear a fragrance by Comme des Garçons, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I got it in the “Summer Sun and Beaches” Sampler from STC. I like it very much. How is the new puppy dog settling in?

Well – there is a bit of drama there….

After having one of my dogs almost killed by a foster, I muzzle all the dogs while I am at work, until I get a good read on the temperament of the newcomer – usually about 2 weeks
The local adoption agency approves, but when I mentioned it publicly, the Spanish shelter which sends us the Podencos had a collective hissy fit, and demanded that she be removed and placed into a non-muzzling home.

I am furious, especially after being told by the local agency that it was my fault for just neglecting to just keep my mouth shut.
I am not good at political shenanigans, so I have just backed away, and puppy is in a new foster home.
She is upset, my dogs are upset and I am bloody furious.

Oh no! The poor puppy having to be bounced out of its loving new home! And poor you for being blamed for trying to do something good! I’m so sorry!

          • MikasMinion says:
            17 February 2017 at 12:05 pm

That is completely ridiculous. A muzzle is a tool to ensure the safety of the animal and those around it, not an instrument of torture (when used properly, obviously).
I muttered some profanity for you when I read your post.

Oh no, poor pup, poor you. So sorry it turned out this way. So much for being honest/transparent, too bad it does not always pay off :(

This makes my blood boil. After my terrier died a few years back I contacted a few local rescues about adoption. Those few conversations made me so furious that I gave up the idea altogether. I know that rescues have the best intentions and that the majority are wonderful and do good work. But some can leave one wondering if their narrow-mindedness does not get in the way of accomplishing their goals.

(The ones here are also really expensive. $500-700 is a typical cost to adopt.)

Osswald has some of them, but they’re always out of the ones I want. These products seem hard to get unless you’re in Italy. Profumum doesn’t sell anything through their website – as far as I can tell. My husband and I are planning to spend our 10th anniversary in Italy (2018), and after my first espresso, I’m heading to the Profumum shop. ???? Perfume will have to trump sightseeing for the first day. I’ve been waiting too long!

Happy Friday! Wearing one my favorites tropical, beachy scents: EL Bronze Goddess Eau Fraiche. Sunny, bright, delicious. I was so surprised to read comments yesterday about the poor longevity. On me it lasts the whole day, so I guess I am very lucky. Hoping the new EdP is as beautiful and addictive as the original one is. Double strength coffee and looking forward to the long holiday weekend. Enjoy!

I have the shimmering body lotion. It is not too sparkly and it gives you a nice glow. Very soft and makes the perfume last longer. It smells delicious. For what I understand it is also a limited edition.

I’m not a fan of tropical scents and stay far away from stuff like Bronze Goddess because coconut in fragrance really puts me off. In fact, anything that smells vaguely of suntan lotion or oil has me running for the hills. Not my cuppa.
But I am in something I’d wear in the summer: L’ombre dans l’eau.

      • Jenkr says:
        17 February 2017 at 1:24 pm

Yes. I’m not really a beach type at all. I only eat coconut – sparingly. Pineapple is great – for eating only and really delicious in spicy dishes. Banana is on my hate list. I don’t like it, the texture freaks me out the smell makes me flee the room.

The only way I can do tropical is with a white floral, but even that is limited because while I can appreciate BWF scents, I’m generally not a fan. Anything “beachy” or “suntan” – ish in any way just makes my skin crawl. I can’t stand the smell of suntan oil itself so a fragrance meant to evoke that is just nauseating to me.

Summertime scents to me are green and floral instead of beachy and tropical.

Do you mean your DIL wears Bronze Goddess? It is nice to smell something on someone else and notice how different it is – or isn’t.

I’m just not a fan of that particular smell. “Beachy” scents are just not appealing to me.

I like the smell of coconut, but not so much in perfume for some reason. You smell fantastic today- like a lush green summer garden! I thought about L’Ombre myself this am.

I’m the same way. I only like coconut smell if it’s actual coconut for eating because the scent is rather soft. But usually coconut smelling things turn me off completely and I don’t really like coconut oil either. I’ve tried some fragrances with a little bit of coconut before, but never really liked them.
I was thinking of a local arboretum I’d been to that has a spectacular rose garden as things I’d do in the summer and so L dans L came immediately to mind.
A lot of people on the east coast associate the beach with summer activities but I’d much rather go romping in a wooded park (lots of shade!) instead.

It’s definitely working well for today. It’s cold out, but very sunny. I’ve also noticed a few green sprouts here and there already in the flowerbeds at work and at home.
It’s great for summertime. Nice and refreshing for most of the day with a soft warmth in the dry down for evening.

I’m in Lolita Lempicka Elle l’Aime. My bottle arrived yesterday, so I gave myself two assertive sprays a little bit ago. Lemon-lime soda with coconut, and kind-of, sort-of fresh. It’s not a love, but that’s ok. It’s beachy, and it’s one more for my tropical/beach collection. I’ve been all about this category this winter, and have enjoyed it tremendously.

    Have a great Friday!

No regrets! Actually, I had a small decant, and I decided to go for it when I found a really good price last week. I was wanting something new(ish), and I liked it well enough to go for it.

Over time, I’ve found that sometimes the things I start out just liking turn into love. This could really easily be one of them.

Happy Friday one and all! I am looking forward to a long weekend and perhaps sleeping in. SOTD is Miss Dior Cherie. I purchased it from duty free when hubby and I were on our way to Turks and Caicos years ago. It brings me back to the wonderful week we had there. I don’t often wear fruity, but there’s something about that strawberry/buttered popcorn thing I get that draws me in.

Heehee. I love a monochromatic color scheme. ????
Also, I’ve recently wondered if others coordinate their clothing with the color they associate with their fragrances. The other day I could not bring myself to wear Bois de Violette with my orange scarf because I associate BdV with purple, and I’m not a fan of orange and purple together.

I have no shame in this regard. Once I wore Amouage Gold with ratty jeans and a t-shirt (I work at home). When I picked up my kid at pre-school the coordinator looked me over and said, “Well, you SMELL nice. ” Which I did :)

The EDP is a rounder floral than the EDT, which has more aldehydes. Beige goes with practically anything. You smell great.

I wondered if Beige was one that might be improved on as an EDP. Sounds like maybe it has? I love aldehydes, but “rounder floral” is appealing… If it lasted longer/projected more, I’d be happy about that, too.

My brain is tired this morning so I’m doing an easy-peasy comparison:

Left SotD = Chanel Eau de Cologne (spray decant)
Right SotD = 4711 Original Eau de Cologne (splash bottle)

Chanel is a bit brighter with more yellow citrus. 4711 is a slightly more aromatic. Both are a wonderful way to wake up this morning. Happy Friday, NST!

I am wearing Ichnusa (Profumum Roma) today (sample)

This is a very very green herbal fig to me. The fig is dry, the herbs are very nice and soft (not too foodie or screechy, or too mellow, thank god, because a lot of herbal and green scents turn out that way on my skin).

Yes, big like, will try again soon :)

It’s not really tropical, but I it certainly evokes a sunny feeling. So this one counts for the reverse hemisphere theme right? :)

      About Ichnusa.
The gorgeous greennes turns into a more sweet woody white musk later on. Not really excited about that phase.
Funny thing, longevity of the greenness differs per hand though.

Oh well, def gonna try this one again in warmer weather.

I am wearing the goofiest fragrance I own (I think), CSP Vanille Banane. I smelled like Banana Laffy Taffy and a vanilla pudding cup. It smells like nothing found in nature, more like a pack of Donkey Kong scratch-and-sniff stickers. It wears down to woody vanilla with some patchouli. No great shakes but inoffensive. That first 40 minutes or so is great fun, though.

S(ip)otD: MF Tropical–black tea with a tropical fruit salad of citrus, pineapple, and hibiscus. Why not?

Summery SOTD #5 is Acqua di Parma “Blu Mediterraneo Bergamotto di Calabria”. Spray it on and it’s beautiful, but by the time you say ‘Acqua di Parma Blu Mediterraneo Bergamotto di Calabria’ three times, it has disappeared.

    Top: bergamot and citron;
    Mid: ginger, cedar and flowers;
    Base: vetiver, benzoin and musk.

I got out my OJ Discovery Set today to put on Tiare and then realized the set also had Frangipani in it, so I tried them both, one left one right. I’m winding up really loving the Frangipani. It’s just pretty, light and floral and a more pure and happy smell, more true to the one central flower. The Tiare has some sort of green note that I don’t care for as much. It’s got the lime but something else I don’t like quite as much–vetiver? They’re both nice though. These projects are good because they get you to re-explore things you’ve forgotten about–Always nice!

SOTD is Olfactive Studios Still Life in Rio. The ginger top note is bright, and the Brazilian copaiba wood is a playful base that rounds out the coconut.

    Happy Friday!

SOTD (reverse hemisphere) I am in a combo of L’Occitane’s Eau Universalle and TF Rive Ambre, which would be perfect for summer! The crisp herbally- ambery scent is a perfect refreshment in the summer and is a very nice layer on this late winter day.

I will probably top this off with more Rive Ambre later on in the day.

Coffee – french press- with almond butter+ apricot/chia seed jam (no sugar) on gluten fee corn muffin. YUM!

Pulled Un Jardin en Med out for today’s project. Haven’t worn this in maybe a couple of years now for some reason but it is really working today.

Found some boots yesterday on sale, wore them home and they were so comfortable I bought a backup set online the same day. Had made the mistake of not backing up a pair that I loved a few years back and won’t make that mistake again.

I tried to buy a backup of my favorite sandals last summer. There was an ebay seller who had the last pair on the planet in my size. I bought them and she accidentally shipped them to someone else!

I still do searches occasionally to find a pair but no luck.

Smart thinking, Gi! And enjoy the Hermes.

I’ve started buying back-ups of pretty much everything I wear a lot on eBay. Shoes, jeans, skirts, tops – it’s been surprisingly easy to find most of the things I wanted, and cheaper than I thought as well.

Dame’s Lime, Gardenia, and Benzoin today. I smell like biscuits and flowers. My trial size is well-used – I should order another before summer truly arrives! And there are some soliflores I’d like to spray around, too . . .

My university is showing Moonlight this evening, and I might go see it. But I have some grading in between me and the evening.

        Good morning!

I think the gardenia in LGB is cleaned up and streamlined – it’s a fresh gardenia. Playful and cheerful. The Dame soliflore gardenia, though I’ve only dabbed that one, is more true to life and heady.

I need to sniff that one. I just got a package from Dame today (a couple of trial sizes) and there were 6 samples included in the box. I love ordering from them! Two men’s colognes, one edt, one soliflore, and samples of the two new fumes that are coming out March 1 – Earth Mother and Sky Father, both of which sound really interesting.

SOTD is the very last rembants of my Auphorie Eternal Voyage which has a slightly soapy, tangy, and juicy rose-geranium, and even though it’s got a gourmandish base, it reminds me of summer. It was one of the few scents I brought with me to Fire Island last summer and wore it nearly every day. It’s being discontinued ???? I think I might have to get a bottle while I still can.
And yay to a 3 day weekend ????

My migraine is gone for now but in my thrashings last night trying to get comfy enough to sleep, I managed to hit a bad position and now have an insanely horrible knotted-up neck and upper back. I can hardly move my left arm, which is a huge problem because I’m a lefty and have to go to work where they expect me to, you know, work and stuff.
Since I applied some essential oil blend to my tense back I decided to wear a few dabs of Winter Kitty so as not to have my perfume compete. I know I should be in something tropical, but it’s a warm day so I really feel like I’m playing along anyway.

I received a sample of TF’s Orchid Soleil in a Sephora GWP sample pack last month and decided to give it a shot since it was perfect for today’s theme. Confession: I don’t like any of the TF perfumes I’ve tried and this is no exception. It smells almost exactly like Nicolai’s Kiss Me Tender, which I also don’t like – in fact, both frags smell just like Juicy Fruit gum on me. I’ve always blamed the heliotrope in KMT for the gum smell, but Orchid doesn’t list heliotrope as a note – the only note they have in common in vanilla. Perhaps now I can lift my embargo on heliotrope scents . . .

Veering far afield here, I am reading a really interesting book on the History the Silk Road, which encompasses everything. Just now I am reading how the Russian barbarians spread white slaves (Slavs) across the middle east and back into Europe through the port of Venice. The slave trade drew so many slaves through Venice that Italian words become incorporated into the business. The word “Ciao”, used now as a universal greeting, originally had the more specific meaning “I am your slave.” See, there was a point to this digression!

Interesting! I didn’t know anything about this word’s morphology. In case of this perfume though it’s not the exclamation but last name of a fictional heroine.

Also, I wanted to add re: Frederic Malle body products that the POAL shower cream and body oil were disappointing to me. The cream does not feel luxurious, or creamy for that matter, and the scent does not linger on skin like the shower gels–and the oil doesn’t have a strong scent at all. I expected the same quality as the body butters, but unfortunately I didn’t think either product was well done. And for that price–the products should be flawless. On a happier note, the new Iris hand cream I find to be delightful. (Yes, ridiculously expensive too.)

Reverse Friday Project for Saturday . I love these projects and I’m sending you Bella Freud 1970 which is really growing on me : rose de mai, saffron, incense, myrrh, frankincense and patchouli, benzoin…lots of patchouli so sweet and slightly boozy, almost tactile as scents go ( no powder, lots of resin) Starts loud, softens quickly. Not a perfume for people who are in the mood to be challenged , or who want to delve into the complexities of composition. It’s more hippy than refined which means it achieves what it set out to do. If you like cosy or rich Christmas Pudding type scents like Plum, Myrrh and Tonka or even Hypnotic Poison you might like it. Or you might not! Might have a nail polish opening for some people. It will soon be spring! The leaves are turning down here. I love the face that I live in a place with four seasons….though summer is pretty diluted.

High summer is hanging on up here, tatty and battered, but grimly surviving. We have three seasons, summer, winter and transition.

Hey, I’m going to sign That Thesis out to examination next week. The student worked very hard to incorporate my feedback and although it’s not a strong piece of work, it’s at least examinable. So, by the time I see you in May, I’ll be quite relaxed and will probably have finalised my retirement date. Yay! 2017: the year of change and all sorts of completions!

Also, I came across this about Andy Warhol:

Morning, all. Seven o’clock and I’m only just awake–this stuff the doctor has given me is totally changing my perception of what night is for. It’s, you know, when people sleep, and I’m joining in. I feel odd, but sleep power to the people!

My project scent is Mon Parfum Cheri par Camille, all dark spices and something I can’t name. I have the EdeT, and I can’t imagine what a more potent concentration might smell like, but this is just tolerable on this warm, muggy day. I’m not totally loving my perfume today: MPCpC would be better finding its way to my senses from underneath a heavy cashmere jacket or around a luxurious (but faux) fur collar. As it is, I feel I should be wearing one of those bras that produce cleavage like a canyon, a dress that starts late and finishes early, and feathered lipstick in Damson Plum. Funny how the weather has changed my feelings about this perfume: in winter, it’s just a slightly noir, sophisticated perfumey perfume. In summer, its personality gains another sort of presence.

You are a brave one. I don’t think I could attempt MPCPC in the summer heat, as much as I love it.

Actually, not brave: silly. It’s become too much & I’m trying hard to help it onwards departure before I decide to dislike it permanently.

I absolutely adore MPCPC but I don’t wear it in summer. It smells plumbs, damp earth and metal. It’s one of my autumn favourites, so while I think you smell stunning, I can see why it feels wrong.

The EDP is only a little stronger, and a bit softer around the edges.

I know, to me timing is one of the most crucial elements for enjoying a perfume. I suffer enough inadvertent mismatches without doing it deliberately.

Wearing a spray of Chambre Noir this morning, which is one of my winter favourites. I feel I had a very wide choice for the theme today :) A cool weather perfume fits the concept of the opposite hemisphere, but a summery perfume would contrast with the actual season we’re experiencing, which is not much like summer.

I don’t mind colder weather in winter, snuggly coats and boots have their charms, but not in summer!!

    Happy Friday (or Saturday)!

For Reverse Hemisphere Friday, I’m sampling Carthusia Aria di Capri. Unfortunately, I think this is a ‘no’ for me. According to Fragrantica, it’s a floral aldehyde, and some people say it reminds them of N°5. I don’t ‘see’ it. I’m getting mostly what I assume is the mimosa, but it smells very similar to the myrrh-and-whatever notes that make Jubilation 25 unwearable on me. ????

Am I the only one who gets a chlorine note from Terracotta? It smells like an outdoor pool in summer to me. I’ve got a few drops of it on one wrist, and a cup of David’s Coconut Oolong to accompany it.

I started the day not quite on point with summer scents specific to my locale. Where I live beaches are at lakes and rivers. I live within walking distance to a beach on a lake, and L’Artisan Thé Pour un Été captures its exact smell in summer. It’s like beach in a bottle for me. But it only lasts about 5 minutes, also remarkably like summers here :(

On the other wrist is Sulékó Djelem. I may be the only one on the planet who thinks it smells like summer, but it has a strong note of dried grass as well as something deeply green, all of which conspire to conjure up blackberry bushes in late summer for me.

Looking forward to the splitmeet tomorrow!

Yup, there’s a brief moment in Terracotta’s progression that smells sharp to me. Chlorinated pool water is a good description. I like to imagine that note appears when the flowers recede enough for the musk to appear (many musks smell spiky-sharp to me), just before the vanilla takes over. Sometimes I don’t notice it, but when I do I spritz on more Terracotta, or a bit of Eau de Guerlain, and then swoon. :)

Thought for sure there’d be lots more Terracotta on this post. Hmm.
Anyway, I’m very late to this rollicking party, but wanted to add my SOTD which is the very pretty, summery and happy Juste un rêve.
    Great name too!

Stopped at Jo Malone for a few more sprays of Myrrh & Tonka, still deciding if I want more of this one. It’s an intense smell, which is probably more the myrrh than any of the other notes. Still not sure…

Hooray for 3-day weekends and the splitmeet! It was such a crazy week and I had been pining for end of day Friday and here we are!

I got a two-fer today: continuing Month of Roses AND wearing what I consider as an opposite hemisphere fragrance.

    SOTD = L’AP Safran Troublant

Apparently, the magic number of spritzes for this to last longer on me is 10! My normal 8 die out after 4 hours but the 2 extra spritzes – whoop! Over 10 hours! Due to infrequent wear (boo me), my half bottle PLUS back up will last me several lifetimes.

I worked in a different office this afternoon so my commute home pattern changed, requiring me to take the subway to Penn Station. A woman wearing a coat, huge scarf and a zip up shirt unbuttoned her coat, loosened her scarf, partially unzipped her shirt, reached into her bag and took out a BOTTLE of perfume (it was crown shaped) and reached into her shirt with the bottle and proceeded to spritz like there was no tomorrow. Surprisingly, I barely smelled it, whatever it was!

Guess I was thinking more spring than tropical: Aqua Allegoria Angelique-Lilas. Pretty, but like most florals it got uncomfortable for me after the first 15 minutes.

Have a sunny, relaxing weekend all.
