Friday scent of the day 1/27

Posted by Robin on 27 January 2017 372 Comments

We're all in it together, propaganda poster from the movie Brazil

Happy Sci-Fi Friday!  Our community project for today: wear a fragrance that transports you to some alternative futuristic scenario, or that matches a favorite Sci-Fi novel or movie. Thanks to Solanace for the suggestion.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

This was a hard project! I wanted to wear something for Jean-Luc Picard or Captain Janeway, but I decided I didn't think either of them would wear fragrance (although hopefully some of you will disagree with me and I look forward to seeing your choices!). Captain Kirk would, but I'm fresh out of Mandom. So I'm wearing Lancôme La Vie Est Belle (not for long, but I am wearing it for the moment) for Terry Gilliam's Brazil.

Reminder: 2/3 will be Lemming Friday — you acquired a sample because you kept hearing about it (here or elsewhere), now you think you might just have to buy the bottle. A variation on a theme suggested by SheriG.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’ve been dipping in and out of the project this week. Here goes:

No-brainer Monday, Prada, Amber Pour Homme.

Tuesday, L’Artisan Parfumeur, Fou d’Absinthe. I reckon this is what Guardians of the Galaxy’s Groot smells like. (That might be a superhero theme though – have we done that yet Robin? Heck, we could stretch that out to two weeks, Superheroes and/or their alter egos the first week, Supervillains the next.)

Wednesday, Donna Karan, Fuel for Men. In a couple of episodes of the brilliant Farscape (and I had such a crush on Ben Browder…) they used the original, sculptural bottle as a grenade!

Thursday, L’Artisan Parfumeur, Tea For Two. I hadn’t worn it in a while and just had a craving for it.

And today I’m fully committing by scenting one of my favourite SciFi/horror movies; Ridley Scott’s Alien. It’s all here: the cold steel of the ship; the metallic acid blood of the alien; the tinny whiff of blood as that monstrous, (and frankly phallic – any ideas where this is going yet?), toothy, little midnight courgette explodes from the torso of hapless incubator Kane; the milky fluid seeping from the decapitated android Ash; the dripping saliva of the relentless extra terrestrial killer; the cold isolation of space; the stench of fear, panic and horror… SOTD, Etat Libre d’Orange, Secretions Magnifique. (Oh yes, I did!)

    Happy Friday everyone!

Yay, sci-fi Friday! Brazil is a great choice. I went with Slumberhouse Vikt, which I’ve decided is the exact smell of the klah beverage they drink in the Dragonriders of Pern series. Which definitely shades into fantasy, but whatever. I will be so sad when my decant of Vikt is gone.

Humiecki&Graef Eau Radieuse. I have already worn it for another challenge here, but it fits the theme so well that I chose it as a SOTD again. A futuristic smell, futuristic bottle, and even the scent’s official description mentions ‘futuristic’.
Besides, it is just what I needed today – something refreshing and energizing to clear away the cobwebs.

Neytiri: Sky People cannot learn, they do not see. Sky People cannot learn, you do not See.

Channelling Zoe Saldana from Avatar in Interlude Woman, Amouage.

The green and metallic notes remind me of what you may smell on the moon Pandora. I also get amber, musk and sweetness.

SOTD= Kerosene’s R’Oud Elements, augmented with a drop of Memo’s Sham’s Oud. This is what the vehicles of the Sufi mystics wandering around Mars in Kim Stanley Robinson’s tour de force Mars series would smell like inside. And of course the people too….healing meditative agarwood with just a whiff of gasoline..This was a highly entertaining exercise. I thought about wearing Dune, because that is what the Harkonnen palace smells like in Dune. Or LADDM because that is how the Fremen smell out in the dunes of Dune. Or Alien, even though I don’the have any now.

I’m in an ancient alien concoction that humans have tried, but failed to reproduce, due to the rare beautiful ingredients the aliens had access to. The aliens are not known for being overly sentimental about the concoction. It was merely one of a number of potions they have created: Vintage No. 19.

Yes, I totally just made up my own sci-fi story for it.

I’m a manga fan, so either that format or a graphic novel would be my medium of choice. I actually prefer being on the outside of the story looking in on it as a spectator/narrator. There’s something quite delectable about seeing stories unfold before you and not being directly involved.

Ah, Brazil the movie, how timely!
I was planning vintage Fleurs de Rocaille Extrait for General Leia Organa, but… My Régime des Fleurs Falling Trees bottle just arrived, and I had to wear it. Wow! This is a VERY nice incense perfume with woody undertones. Reminds me of CdG Avignon, with some Fille en Aiguilles and a little Chêne finely weaved within. Or incense tears and pencil shavings. Very nicely blended, and long lasting, too! Even the bottle and cap are good looking and heavy. Thank you, Robin and Régime des Fleurs, for the draw. Now, would General Organa wear it? I’d say she would, this is very classy, there is some austerity to it but it’s comfortable, too, like a pair of good boots. But it’s very me, with the vegetal inteligence backstory and all, so sorry General Organa, but today I’m just imagining myself as a valiant, loyal and stylish soldier fighting for the Revolution in a galaxy far, far away.

SF SotD: Mugler Cologne. With its almost laughable artificiality and weirdly space age bottle, this fragrance strikes me as a plausible product of the Star Trek replicator. Surely, Jean Luc occasionally wore cologne when off duty and in that snazzy lounge wear of his. Perhaps he ordered “cologne, Thierry Mugler, 2ml” then, along with his “tea, Earl Grey, hot?”

SF B(ook)otD: IM Banks’ Excession. Purely by coincidence, and after a 10-year lapse, I’m now binge re-reading all of Banks’ Culture novels. Such an excellent series.

SOTD Shiseido Rose Royale. I found a decant on super-discount and blind-bought it. This is my first heavy testing (more than a teeny spritz when it first arrived). Can a rose be both oppulant and light? That is my sense of it. It is a full bloom, with some cosmetic powder in the base, but it isn’t a sillage-monster at all–which is probably good, since I’ll be in meetings at least half of the day!

Sci-fi isn’t really my thing and I had planned to wear Eden for its green strangeness- but I forgot.
BUT! I did buy something perfume related that kinda fits the bill. A GIANT factice of Rochas Byzance. I saw it advertised and had to have it it’s so fabulously unreal. It cost me the price of a bottle of perfume but I have many of them but no HUMONGOUS PLASTIC BLUE AND GOLD PERFUME BOTTLES! It’s 72cm/34inches tall and almost as wide and I laugh with delight when I see it on top of the cabinet that holds my perfume collection. Perfume bottles the size of a medium dog is kinda sci-fi for me :)
Oh and wore Cristalle/no5 l’eau from the Chanel counter this morn and Roma Imperiale this evening.

Mandom – hah! You’re absolutely right, Robin. :D

I wanted to wear something that would evoke Sean Young as Rachael in Blade Runner, but had some trouble. I finally settled on vintage Tabac Blond, in keeping with her retro hairdo and clothes (and smoking habit), but then realized that in her world it would have to have been a replica (like her), and fake Tabac Blond is just blasphemy. So I’m backing into the project by wearing L’AP Bucoliques de Provence. The smoked-amber bottle is the color of her world when she meets Deckard, and the actual fragrance could be the scent of the world she and Deckard fly off to at the end. Okay, I tried. ;)

I had all these ideas percolating around–Bulgari Black for The Matrix, Wood Sage and Sea Salt for A Wizard of Earthsea, anything camphor-y for My Neighbor Totoro…

And in the end, I had a complete brain fog this morning, and reached for Mugler’s Alien, just for the name, because I couldn’t remember any of my good ideas before coffee.

But if I were to tie it to one of my fav sci-fi movies of all time, it would be Dark City – dark, confusing, passionate, broken, hopeful, timeless.

I made Lovetosmellgood’s delicious scones early this morning and the DH thought I had been replaced by an alien! I didn’t have clotted cream, but I tried them with a little peach yogurt ( mixed with organic plain so it’s not too sweet) . It did have a jam and cream sensibility to it.

Later, I will wear Chanel Beige for the project. It’s quite proper and exudes confidence with controlled elegance, radiance, and grace. A futuristic fragrance for today :- D .

They were acceptably close to the Fortnum and Mason ones (considering the cook), and had a buttery flakey crumbly texture rather than being a spongy muffin thing like a lot of American ones. They are a good vehicle for the toppings, which is how I prefer them.

That recipe is pretty similar to our old Country Women’s Association and Golden Wattle Cookbook versions- the 2 classics of old school living-off-the-land cooking. With jam and cream like a proper Devonshire Tea :) yum.

My partner hasn’t seen Brazil yet, and so it’s the next movie in our Netflix queue. Funny — I’ve never thought of Terry Gilliam’s movies as sci-fi, but in a wonderful sort of genre of their own. Why the man hasn’t won an Oscar yet I have no idea.

I went non-sci-fi today, since I’ll be working outdoors and in close pickup truck quarters with a colleague, so I’m in Malibu Lemon Blossom and dreaming of spring. At least the sun is out today — I’d almost forgotten what it looked like!

Read the Red Rising Trilogy with my older son a year or so ago, so was thinking of Amouage’s Gold for Darrow when he is transformed… But I couldn’t find a drop of Gold, so then was thinking back to the many scifi books I read with my youngest, and The True Meaning of Smekday (great book for 10 year olds, NOTHING like the movie at all!) came to mind. I could see Tip holding on to an old bottle of perfume of her mother’s which would be something classic but not too expensive, like Roma.

In my mind, science fiction landscapes are practically always deserts, but I thought I should wear something today that I wouldn’t wear normally.

Went with House of Cherry Bomb Pink Haze, which has notes of lilac, mouget, gardenia, stone, metal, cedar wood, honeysuckle, and beeswax absolute. It definitely smells like metal–specifically silver-toned metal with very fine ridges–like a subway car, or perhaps a spaceship.

Ha ha, I have a good one I think. My taste runs to horror more than sci-fi and so I had a hard time choosing. Some of the options were the Creature from the Black Lagoon (I mean the actual CREATURE not the humans–imagine the mossy, fishy possibilities!), the Pod People from Invasion of the Body Snatchers (fougeres), and others. But I went with the scent for the divinely suave alien Michael Rennie in The Day the Earth Stood Still, and I am wearing Frank Los Angeles No. 1. An ultimate suave masculine. (It was that or Jicky.)

    1) Happy Friday, guys! Will be pricing out repair jobs and then going to Home Despot- er, I mean Depot- for checking out carpet samples!

2): “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.”

I love sci fi and speculative fiction novels, but one of my very favorite films ever, ever, ever is Blade Runner. It is, to me, an unexpected and yet beautiful adaptation of “Do androids dream of electric sheep”. Like Anne Rice, I was drawn to the character of Roy Batty, but not (just) for his looks; he is the cold synthetic heart of the film, more than Deckard, more than Rachel. Roy wants memories, wants connections, wants love. He, more than anyone else in the film, understands what life is, truly is- and wants more of it.

For Roy, I am wearing Ether Oxyde (from a sample), a woody skin/white musk scent. It’s a close approximation of a human skin scent, of what you would smell when giving an embrace. I think that Roy would appreciate an embrace, a true one, in a world in which the ersatz and alternative have been made paramount.

I remember being that line really sticking with me, and wondering why ever so often. Now, that I am older and with my parents and foster sister gone, it has taken on a concrete meaning: how ephemeral life is, and how utterly important connections and memories in life are.

Unfortunaty, I’ll have to read today’s comments later.
I chose Indochine for it’s honey note. It makes me think of Orson Scott Card’s novel, Ender’s Game. The enemies are a colony of creatures who look like bees that want to colonize earth and remove human life. Still one of my favorite sci fi novels, although I read it many years ago. I may be cheating because I can’t remember if the book identified the enemy as bees or if I thinking of the movie. Happy Friday!

Bas de Soie today, which isn’t normally a winter scent, or one I wear often, for that matter. Channeling Dr Crusher in TNG…not in one of the standard jumpsuits that everyone wore, but as a femme fatale in the episode where they went back in time–an homage to a similar episode in the original series. A stretch, I know!

I only have four scents with me on this trip, so not a lot of choice. Trying to think of the scent of the beautiful, loving creatures that tend to Meg in A Wrinkle in Time. Probably only one with me that is close is Angel Muse. Comforting, cozy and delicious.

Or…if I had it with me Aliage. Only because that scent evokes a lot of memories for me. I’d link it to the current movie Arrival, both for its greenness and concept of memory.

Ok so to tie today’s theme into my week o’ Zoologist, I am wearing Rhinoceros. The reason is there is a race of alien mercenaries in Doctor Who who have human-like bodies with rhinoceros-like heads. I forget what they’re called. It’s also a really nice leather, and I can sort of imagine the first Doctor (William Hartnell) wearing something like this.

I thought this over and came up with ideas all week. Here’s what I decided on and some other ideas for pairings:

SOTD is CB I Hate Perfume Cradle of Light for the pod plants and flowers of the 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The scent is super fluorescent green with white floral supporting notes. Smells like a space plant all right. Plus, the perfume is super pricey and I have only 0.25ml so I rarely wear it. Seemed like the perfect occasion.

I also thought Olympic Orchids Tropic of Capricorn would work for the pod plants.

Other thoughts for the theme are to give Ripley a musky, animalic scent. I thought I’d PdE Musc Tonkin though it’s probably not dirty enough, or DSH Rendezvous, which, while skanky is still too polished for Ripley. Maybe SL Muscs Koublai Khan. Also, Fahrenheit 451 requires a perfume that smells of burning books. Maybe CBIHP In the Library layered with Blackbird Taiga.

Lastly, I’m re-reading The Handmaid’s Tale and found some perfume references. Offred used to wear Opium before she became a handmaid. And Serena Joy, the Commander’s wife wears lily of the valley.

I also just got this text from my significant other. I told him about the theme and all of my ideas.

“I did a weird combo for sci fi day, hopefully I don’t smell bad hehe.”

After I asked him what he chose:
“My inspiration was Blade Runner, so I put on some Bulls Blood for that metallic smell like a replicant, then I layered Hinoki over it, because the sets are inspired by Japan, so I thought a replicant might get an oriental incense at a market stall to try to cover their inhuman scent.”

I’m wearing L’Heure Bleue to evoke the sadness of the house in “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Ray Bradbury. The empty, mechanical home still trying to serve the dead humans always makes me feel melancholy.

Man, I love Ray Bradbury so much.

Ever have a week that you think will be normal but suddenly goes bonkers? That’s been my week. I’ve read the comments but have had no chance to comment or say hi – hi! Oh well, the end is in sight and the weekend approaches.

I was considering Firefly/Serenity for the project, trying to match something to River or to Wash’s “I am a leaf on the wind” quote. Maybe this weekend…

SOTD is Iris Silver Mist, I’ve been reading Perdido Street Station and it really seems to capture the general mood of the book. Something that is equal parts beautiful, strange and confusing.

One character in particular (Lin) is an alien with a red human body and scarab head, but she describes humans as having a khepri body and human head. That’s exactly the twist of perspective I need with ISM.

Well, i got caught in a celluloid jam with this one ( not to mention the two days of the Science Fiction tune from Rocky Horror going through my brain). I am pairing Rocky Horror with MISIA which I am smelling from a Chanel blotter. Had such a blast with Waterdragon at the Chanel boutique, sniffing Chanel exclusifs off white porcelain (?) dippers that actually looked like applicator tampons ( so that was a bit surreal ). Fell in love with Coromandel , Misia and Bel Respiro…all transported me to another planet . Which reminds me of one of my favourite songs of the 80s: Another Girl, Another Planet by the Only Ones ( think they were Australian?) . Coromandel …. Wonderful. While in Auckland I bought Interlude and JM Pomegranate Noir ( liked Dark Amber and Ginger Lily, Carner Barcelona Cuirs ). If I’d gone to Chanel first I would have bought Coromandel and maybe Misia. Happy days everyone!

    “Good hunting!”

SOTD = Habit Rouge = Battlestar Galactica

Not only is it the perfect scent for Kara Thrace, but ‘Hunting Red’ is a match for BSG as a whole. The hunt: the pre-flight mantra of the Viper pilots, the hunt for Earth, and Humanity’s remnants as the prey hunted across the galaxy by the Cylons. Red: the motif of splashing blood drops, Cylon eyes (and, erm, spines), Basestar interiors, the dreaded result on Baltar’s ‘Cylon Detector’, and a certain iconic red dress.

    *Mic drop*

    Happy Friday, NST!

Not being a SF fan, I had to really think back in time. Reminiscing about Mary Tyler Moore (70s) and how she broached controversial women’s issues while treading lightly, I thought of Maureen Robinson, the mother on Lost in Space (late 60s). Talk about being all things to all people, this woman was a scientist in space while protecting her children from anything the universe could throw at them.

Hmmm….capable, formidable, while comforting. Gotta be Vetiver Extrordinaire.

I went with how I pictured Arthur Dent smelling after waking up and brushing his teeth, but before he rolled in the mud to stop the Vogon fleet – Bal a Versailles EDT – faintly “whiffy” ( he never did get that shower) but not too overtly BO-centric, as he was a proper Englishman.

    Don’t Panic.

Wearing Ramon Monegal Impossible Iris. I have a strong association for this perfume: it reminds me of Diva Plavalaguna from The Fifth Element. Several years ago I described this association on my blog (so I’ll quote, not to try re-phrase it now): “Impossible Iris starts strange and a little aloof (especially if worn in the colder weather). It smells… the word “artificial” has a negative connotation, which isn’t my intent, but I don’t know how to describe this perfume better. It smells not natural – similar to how Mugler‘s Angel smells not natural (though I’m not trying to compare scents themselves). I do not recognize the scent of any of the listed elements but the composition smells good. As time goes by, Impossible Iris warms up, loses its other-worldliness and becomes more familiar and approachable. It sings on skin, and it is beautiful.”

This is great fun! I chose my all time favorite -Enchantress From The Stars by Sylvia Engdahl.
Elana, the main character, is a member of an interstellar civilization on a mission to help a medieveal culture on another planet. Of course they’re not to interfere in the culture they encounter. She becomes the key to a dangerous plan to turn back an invasion. Elana is in a very complex situation-How can she help the Andrecians, who still believe in magic, without revealing her own tools, weapons and machines- that will be seen as ‘powers’? At the same time, Georyn, the son of an Andrecian woodcutter, knows only that there is a dragon in the enchanted forest ( one of the interstellar machines) ,and he must defeat it. He sees Elana as the Enchantress from the Stars who has come to test him, to prove he is worthy.
I chose DSH Cimabue – at first an attractive but simple scent that turns out to be complex.

Ok my Sci-F scent of the Day is based on the book Smoke by Dan Vyleta.
The story centers around a futuristic version of London where people exude smoke when they have negative thoughts or emotions. One must learn to hide their emotions or control their mind in order to control the smoke. The upper classes master this more easily…. that’s the plot so far but their nefarious activites at work stacking the deck in favor of some vs others.
The setting is a boys academy with some Harry Potter similarities.
My obvious scent is Oud Incense PdN!
Have a good weekend my friends.

I can’t think of any off the top of my head, but some kind of black tea and bergamot fragrance for Captain Picard could work. It would be a little stern and medicinal with whiffs of Earl Grey about it, in my mind. An Earl Grey fougere, maybe?

I can imagine Janeway splashing on some replicated Florida or Queen of Hungary water while getting dressed for one of her gothic holo-novel jaunts.

I forgot about today’s theme, so I’m wearing Diptyque’s L’eau de L’eau from a sample I received in the freebiemeet. It’s completely not what I was imagining at all in the best possible way. It reminds me of a scent my irrepressible grandmother used to wear, and after some time spent googling around I’m pretty certain her scent was Red by Giorgio of Beverly Hills. I remember Red being more “feminine,” but there’s still a strong similarity. I’m not sure if this is how other people read L’eau de L’eau, though! But for me it reads as spicy, citrusy, slightly powdery, and all around very sexy.

Thank you Paula for the samples! I’ve been putting off trying Diptyque for too long and now see the error of my ways.

Perhaps Picard would wear one of the Astier de Villatte colognes. Earl Gray tea was a sophisticated choice when the original Star Trek was made. He won’t be wearng what everyone else is wearing. Some of the Astier de Villatte colognes are medicinal, too.

Passage d’Enfer. It definitely belongs to an alternate universe, though I’m not sure which one. Something by Lord Dunsany?

Late to the party. This week was soooo crazy with so much unexpected work that I did not get what I needed to accomplish done. Aaaaargh. TGIF for sure.

    SOTD = Jo Loves Pomelo

I was originally going to wear ISM for its aura of coldness which I associate with outer-space-themed science fiction; however, since it looks like a number us expressed intentions to wear this today, I decided to balance the universe.

Pomelo itself is grapefruit citrusy vetiver and does not have an ounce of science fiction vibe to it. I chose this among others because it was a momento of my recent New Year’s trip to London where I took a picture with the only remaining police box in London (heh, it’s actually newish and placed near the Earl’s Court tube station in the late 90s). Dr. Who fans know it as Tardis. The nerd that I am, I have a Tardis keychain that flashes and emits the grinding noise.

Earlier this week, I complimented someone on the floor on her perfume and asked what she wore. She thought for a few seconds and said she could not remember the name because she has many bottles but she was quite sure it was YSL. I only have 2 YSL FBs — Opium and M7 and it definitely was not these! Anyway, I will bave to follow-up on her comment about having many perfumes :-)

There you go: your own TARDIS scent! With all its rooms, there’s bound to be something in there that smells grapefruity.

      You smelled great!

Are you sure she didn’t just try to protect her favorite perfume from you? :)

SOTD is Tom Ford Vert d’Encens, for Toby in Margaret Atwood’s The Year of the Flood. The earthy greenness for her time in God’s Gardeners, with the incense representing the smoke she uses with the bees. The Maddadam Trilogy is looking even less like science fiction and more like a glimpse of the likely future lately. (Did anyone else see that scientists have created a human/pig chimera? Link here: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/01/human-pig-hybrid-embryo-chimera-organs-health-science/) So, I am enjoying the perfume, but terrified for the future.

I’ve been meaning to read some Margaret Atwood–I’ll have to get on with it. …I saw headlines for that news story yesterday, but I was too genuinely freaked out and dismayed to actually read it!

I’m wearing Femme by Rochas ( was doing the Basenotes sync today ,theme : animalic) and was hurrying as I had to be at work by 9am. This does work for this sync as well . In one of the Star Trek books Captain Kirk’s nephew gets kidnapped by Klingons. Typical Kirk that he is ,he falls for the Klingon girl jailor and she for the young Kirk. He comments in the story that she smells like warm peaches. Femme has a peachy warm skin vibe that could be from wearing armor all day – like a Klingon would.

SJP Lovely. Nothing sci-fi, but I expect if we were in some alternate universe it might smell strange to the natives.

Kenzo Kashaya because I just got the sample. I think it fulfills my wish for something that suggests Lancome Tresor without being so unbearably strong.
