Thursday scent of the day 1/5

Posted by Robin on 5 January 2017 302 Comments

Dior's Bird of Paradise makeup collection

Happy Almost-Friday! Plus, happy Whipped Cream Day and happy Bird Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm cheating: I'm taking Dior Poison down a notch by wearing Hypnotic Poison.

Reminder: 1/6 will be Take it down a notch Friday — wear a perfume that has a bad reputation because people wore way too much of it back in the day. Go ahead and wear it lightly, or go loud and proud, you'll get points either way. Suggested by Bear.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Coco Noir Parfum & Coco Noir Body Cream
The Parfum is better then the EDP in my opinion. Body cream is just delicious!

I bought the body cream during my 4th quarter spending blitz ;) but haven’t opened it yet. Haven’t tried the parfum but maybe now that STC is carrying Chanel again they have it or will get it.

Let me know what you think!
I am going to re-apply in a little bit. The parfum is expensive but I really liked it more than the EDP. There is not much talk about it but here is a review I just found that Denyse did http://graindemusc.blogspot.com/2014/08/coco-noir-extrait-de-parfum-by-chanel.html

Amarige is my best friend’s favourite scent. She is currently skiing towards the South Pole and I keep imagining her sitting in a tent with two others who are secretly plotting to send her out into a blizzard .

I would definitely push her onto her own personal ice floe and pay a seal in buckets of fish to tow her out into open sea….Amarige is one of the very few perfumes that makes me feel ill.

I actually wonder if all the time she soends at high altitude has affected her sense of smell. But i don’t suppose it could. I think the trip is going to take a month so probably Amarige will be the least of their scent problems.

A friend of mine used to wear this, and I actually quite enjoyed it on her. I could never really enjoy it on myself though.
If you want a good belly laugh, and are not easily offended, your blizzard anecdote reminded me of another one on Everest.

Assam of India…heavily sprayed to be loud and proud.
Unfortunately most of my loud and proud fragrances were drained long ago (80s and 90s) so this community project is a bit of a challenge for me.

Whipped cream day? had I known I might have gone with Dame Perfumery Black Flower Mexican Vanilla today :)

SotD: Versace l’Homme (the 1984 l’homme). Classic, loud woody leather fougere. My bottle is older and the citrus at the top is bruised, but this is still very nice with plenty of moss and patchouli in the base.

S(ip)otD: Satispur Assam which is lovely and malty with a tiny hint of allspice.

Taz has not worn his Egoiste yet, but he says he likes it.

Gaze just finished his applications to UVa, Princeton, Yale, and William & Mary on Jan. 1. (He’s been accepted at Virginia Tech, so that’s his fallback should none of the other options work out.) As for West Point, he’s obtained his congressional recommendation, finished his online application, done his Candidate Fitness Assessment (passed), his medical assessment (we think he passed), his vision assessment (on the bubble), but no further info at this point.

Today, Dana Tabu. Another HUGE, HUGE, loud perfume. I hope I can survive this week :D
This has been my mother’s signature scent forever in any season. For so many, many years I have sprayed on her different type of perfumes in hope that she has at least another option to wear. She always says “it is pretty, but I don’t feel myself when I wear something different” (sigh!) Few years back we were at Sephora and she tried and liked a lot Armani Code for women. I was so happy that I bought a bottle for her without hesitation. She wore it no more than 4 times, arguing that she preferred her TABU. Needless to say that I was the one who finished the Armani and believe me, it took me forever.
She used to wear it every day. These days when she is old and sick, she has one or 2 spritzes once in a while. She has several bottles accumulated in her drawers that she received as presents for any occasions. It does not matter if I do not like Tabu, but for me when I rarely wear it, I feel that she is very close to me and that gives me a sense of immense comfort.

      Good memories. ;)

Thanks for sharing this lovely story! I’ve been thinking lately about how wearing a different perfume almost every day will get in the way of my son having a strong, “signature scent” memory to associate with me, and I may need to do something about this. I love that I can uncork a bottle of 1000 and feel like my mother is suddenly beside me.

I totally agree with you Isabella. Considering how much I love perfumes I would like to be remembered by one in particular. But as you say everyday we smell different. I am thinking of probably wearing a signature scent every other day, so at least I can keep enjoying the others. Now my question is what would it be that signature scent to be associated with me?

It’s been discontinued for at least a year or two. Maybe it was too goofy a vanilla for it to really catch on. Not all of use want a vanilla that smells like a cupcake.

I am likewise surprised it was discontinued, when so many other tobacco vanilla scents are selling like mad. I see it as more evidence that LAP doesn’t know what they’re doing anymore.

Continuing a voyage through the Aedes de Venustas range, SOTD today is Palissandre d’Or.

    Top: ambrette, pink pepper, coriander, cinnamon, nutmeg;
    Mid: rosewood, copahu balsam, patchouli;
Base: ambroxan, Virginia cedar, Chinese cedar and Alaskan cedar.

Is it nice? Yes. Do I need it? No.

Off now to buy milk and possibly to watch the parade of the Three Wise Men/ Reyes Magos. Or possibly not, if I can’t stand the thought of over-excited children screaming for sweets. :^)

Why not skip the parade and go and put an offer in on one of those houses and then, once you are set up in a nice room, you can start your book. So, it would be a good career move.

Somebody mentioned Vanilla Insensee the other day and I’ve been thinking of it ever since. Now that I’m home I have dug out my little bottle and sprayed myself liberally. Now, I just wish I could smell something through my allergies!* I know I smell of dry, papery vanilla but I want to be able to enjoy it.

*this is just the beginning of juniper pollen season. I apologize in advance for the months of winging you will all have to endure. One day I hope to be able to afford allergen immunotherapy again.

I do tend to spray rather lavishly as a general rule, but I’m not sure Alahine meets the bad-reputation-due-to-obnoxious-ubiquity criterion of Bear’s challenge. But who cares — any excuse to spray Alahine with a heavy hand is okay by me!

I think distribution is a big factor. Indie perfume companies tend to only have a few small distributors in boutiques or only from their own website. Niche have more limited distribution than mainstream but can be found in higher end dept stores, although that also seems to be changing. Like Jo Malone can now be found at Macy’s so I always think of that line as in the edge of mainstream.

Most niche fragrances are made by the same perfumers who make mainstream fragrances — that is, perfumers who work at the big fragrance & flavor companies. Those companies then also produce the juice.

To me, indie perfumes are made by perfumers, often but not always self-taught, working outside of that system. So that makes Zoologist indie, and Tauer, and DSH, etc, regardless of how they are distributed or where they are sold.

But, that is not everyone’s definition!

I define “indie” as perfumes made by hand (E.g., Sonoma Scent Studio, Tauer Perfumes, DSH), while niche perfumes are produced in more “industrial” manner (e.g., NVC, Puredistance, Jul et Mad). But it’s my internal criterion, I’m not sure if there is a standard definition.

I thought about that but then thought about a few indie brands who are owned by a creative director while the perfumes are created by someone else, like Zoologist. Still small batch, however, and not reaching an industrial level of production.

Today called for some Orchidée Vanille. I’m still trying to get back into the swing of things and is it really 2017?? the coziness of vanille is a great aid to how I’m feeling right now.

My 2017 resolution, however, is to go out for a walk each work day. Even if it’s simply a stroll around the building, the act of getting up from my desk, from my work and clearing my head, is what I’m after.

Unintentionally on the very LOUD side here.
    Warning- long story here!
I got Stash as a gift from hubby and I don’t like it by itself. I keep wanting to add a floral note, to make it less linear. And more floral. ????
Sigh- lol! So glad there’s a perfume blog for me to tell this story on! You all might get why anyone would try This dubious experiment!
The cedar reminds me of a little of a note in Bronze goddess, so I tried a drop of the oil -Stash with 1 spray of. Terracota Le Perfume on top of it- meaning to give it that tropical floral note….
. Wowzaaa! It about knocked me over. ????
Got a headache from the smell and had to take the sweater off , after an hour of hoping it died down.
This morning what survive is surprisingly strong! The Stash is all you can smell. It seems to ‘eat up’ everything I try with it. That stuff is tenacious. I’m wondering from my reading here if it’s got a big dose of ISO E?

Yes, missyl, we understand! Hope you don’t have to resort to dry cleaning! Thanks for the warning, too.

I’ve been more careful about spraying perfume on fabric ever since I tried this with one of the Hermes colognes (either Pamplemousse Rose or Gentian Blanc, I think), which left a very durable jalapeño note on my tank top!

Last year, I was delighted to find dramatically discounted LAVS UNUM on ebay, i.e., one quarter of the original price. I have to report, however, that the shipping has gone up to 90 euros. Even so, the total is still two-thirds of the U.S. price, so worth looking into if you want one of the original LAVS perfumes. It also looks to me like at least two would fit into the box, so it would be worth checking if they combine shipment. They also have the candles.

The quality of the packaging for shipment is incredible: heavy double layer corrugated cardboard box, etc. I think they undercharged originally.

The seller is the Italian producer, so a bit tricky to find on ebay. Here’s the item number for UNUM: 291991319862

Wearing the last of my Putain des Palaces sample. I’m loving all of the rose/violet lipstick-y scents lately, and this is my favorite. HOWEVER, a decant of Lipstick Rose is on the way. Is it wrong that I’m secretly hoping (the much cheaper) Putain will win out?

I really like Putain, Lipstick Rose not as much. They don’t smell at all similar to me, though. Putain is more non-sweet cosmetic rice powder and LR waxy lipstick. If you end up loving LR, cheaper alternatives I can think of are HdP Moulin Rouge, Margiela Lipstick On, maybe even Guerlain Insolence Edp.

Hi, all. I’m not in the project, because this is my wedding anniversary and I thought I would wear Beloved to please the beloved. We just had one of Those Discussions, though, and now I rather wish I had worn L’Ombre dans L’Eau, which he doesn’t like much. Here’s the thing: I thought this was our 45th. He said 44. He lives in the world through numbers, and therefore he’s much more likely to be right than I am, so I just shrugged and accepted my mistake, but he got surprisingly upset that I couldn’t remember the year we got married. Well, that is, it surprised me because he knows I don’t live through numbers. And so on.

Heigh ho! People are complicated, and even after 44 years (not 45, but still quite a long time if you think about it) there are still astonishments to contemplate. I need to go and redeem myself by making something with custard, that being one of the essential food groups according to the dear one. Be well, all.

Don’t feel bad. I have been married 25 years and can never remember the *date* of our anniversary. When my mother was alive, perhaps because she was the person who insisted we get married, she would send a card a few days early so I’d remember. Not a funny but it’s about your beloved POAL. I pisted a comment last week that I smelled whiffs of it at the British Museum and tried to find its source by surreptitiously smelling people. I mentioned this while on the bus with my fellow travellers and one if them said was it a Frederic Malle perfume because she was also trying to snuff out the source as well and my jaw dropped. Our squeals must have busted eardrums. A day later, this same person mentioned that she had been pursuing a discobtinued Tom Ford. Of course over the years many had been discontinued. I asked if it was Amber Absolute and HER jaw dropped. Needless to say, what a small world!

I wore Amber Absolute today (before reading your comment). And I love PoaL – so I enjoyed your story even more than I would have otherwise. But I must say that PoaL “in the wild” – is not something you meet every day.

Cold and rainy, not to mention a bit cranky. But feeling cozy in Mandarine Mandarin.

It is good. Adding to the pleasure with a cup of ginger peach rooibos team. Hope you are enjoying your day tiffanie! I feel like we are scent sisters. :-)

I’m sampling Lune Feline today, and it’s really lovely. I’m questioning my nose and my sophistication, because I’m not getting cinnamon or green notes. It smells quite similar to SDV to me, with a little smoke and perhaps I’m getting Isabella’s LOG emerging. I’ve realized that perhaps my sampling technique is quite wonky, as sticking my nose directly into my skin gives me a completely different impression from what I get from ambient wafts. Either it’s time to go loud and proud, or accept my own quirkiness. Or both!

Ha ha! Watch out for that LOG! It’s unfortunately not better than bad. :D

I named my cats Blammo and Splat. I thought that I was simply expressing my feelings about my life at the time, and the fact that these two cats had exploded onto the scene. Then I took Blammo to the vet, and the vet tech said “Oh wow, yeah, Blammo! I remember that! Ren and Stimpy, right?” I only recently discovered that Splat is also from the show, lurking in the subterranean depths of my consciousness.

I loved your original LOG comment, and I know that I can delightfully summon it up whenever I encounter that particular ubiquitous note.

You all are awesome for bringing up the Ren & Stimpy show. It was one of my study breaks in college, along with The Simpsons.

I get the cinnamon very faintly but nothing remotely green. The result is too sweet or something for me.

      Hahahahahah! You win.

At a concert I sat next to someone wearing La Vie est Belle. When I got home I felt like it was following me. I must admit my coat smelled nice the next day after the scent had faded to a faint whisper.

I love the color combo in the featured image today. I also maybe just have a thing for peacock feathers.

I’m smellin’ up the place in Youth Dew. I’m glad I don’t work with ‘fume-phobes today. :)

Late to the party, chiming in anyway :)

I quadruple sprayed myself with Coromandel EdP from sample. Next I took myself for walk in the cold, overheated myself and the Coromandel made me feel ill on top of feeling dehydrated! Ruh roh.

Everything was fine once I cooled down again and had some liquids. Coromandel tamed herself and now I am able to enjoy myself again.

Glad you’re feeling better. I must be strange because I prefer Coromandel during the hot summer nights. I get more incense and less cola.

Maybe, but man coromandel can go wrong on me big time too. I like to be very cold and so imagine myself *in* the chest full of cashmere with the patchouli tucked in nicely around me.
