Friday scent of the day 12/2

Posted by Robin on 2 December 2016 277 Comments

bv-2016-ss

It's Friday! (And, happy birthday to Britney Spears.) Our community project for today: wear a perfume by Michel Almairac, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I am sure I will not be the only one in the original Bottega Veneta.

Reminder: 12/9 will be Best Buy Friday — wear your favorite fragrance purchase of 2016. If you didn't buy anything this year, pick a favorite from a prior year.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Happy Friday, everyone!

SotD: Bois d’Encens. So, so good. Very dry cedar, vetiver, and incense.

I am drinking a cup of Mangalam Assam from Harney. One of my favorite Assams and just the kick in the seat I need this morning.

Also planning to wear Bois d’Encens later, layered with Aftelier Ancient Resins oil. Good for the season, too.

I dug through my box o’ samples because I knew I had one of those Bond No, 9 scents that Almairac did, and sure enough I found The Scent of Peace: bright fruity top, wet LOTV middle, gauzy wood base, 100 per cent not my kind of thing (and it won’t scrub off), although I can see how some people would love it, because it is exactly like 90 per cent of what’s in the drugstores these days, so it’s extremely zeitgeisty despite being a decade old. Can’t see it’s worth the money, but the bottle sure is pretty.

And now I must go have an aggressive shower to get rid of it so I can put on something I actually like. Probably one of the A*Men flankers: can’t go wrong with those.

I agree with everything you said about Scent of Peace. When I was at the Bond counter this summer the SA said this was their best selling scent. I also get it’s massive appeal but it’s totally not my thing. The Guide likens it to shampoo- hehe- and I probably shouldn’t have read that before trying because all I could associate it with while I wore it was my dorm days and the smell of Aussie hair products permeating the air.

I’m rocking Believe today, with dabs of L’Eau de Chloe from a mini I have. Is it still in production? I’m afraid to buy a bottle if there’s nothing but oldies out there. : (

I have been ignoring my craving for BV all week to save it for today, the only Almairac I own. Like how I try not to roast a chicken in the weeks before Thanksgiving. But it’s all good now. And if I can pull together an outfit half as well coordinated as my BV it could be a very good day.

Have a great Friday and weekend, folks.

True….but I am 93lbs and eat like a horse….and it drives me crazy when people always comment about my weight because if I was 193 lbs no one would dare say to me “you are so fat…stop eating” !!!

Sorry for the rant….just a sensitive issue for me :(

You make a good point – people aren’t as … polite? … about remarking on someone’s weight when it appears to be under, rather than over, a perceived “norm”. I can’t say that I sympathize because I’ve never been “under” in my life ;) but I can empathize. I’m not clever enough to think up snappy comebacks to those who can’t stop themselves from making intrusive comments, but someone here will, I’m sure. :)

          • Jenkr says:
            2 December 2016 at 10:33 am

            Preach!
I used to be in the same boat with you. I had a very high metabolism and would eat ALL THE THINGS but not gain weight. Then college and desk job happened and I did gain the weight. I’m back down now, but I still feel it is a bit unfair to skinny people who try to gain weight. My husband has been trying to put on weight because he was dangerously skinny for his size and it’s been a struggle. He gets exasperated each day when he sees he needs to eat more (he counts calories to help him keep on track).

          • farouche says:
            2 December 2016 at 11:09 am

Any comment about another’s size, weight, etc. is just plain rude!

          • Natalya says:
            2 December 2016 at 11:20 am

I think most of people have to struggle with tendency to be overweight, even though they don’t eat a lot… like me…for this reason they assume when they see a really skinny person, that she/he does not eat AT ALL

          • Amy says:
            2 December 2016 at 4:20 pm

I really do sympathize. But I’ve been on both ends — under 100 lbs and a weight not to be disclosed — and people give you looks and make comments on both sides I’m afraid to say. And the eat comments usually have an edge of envy the “your going to eat THAT” comments don’t.

          • Amy says:
            2 December 2016 at 4:21 pm

Which isn’t to say I am not with you and think everyone should keep ALL the comments to themselves!

Over the years I have drained at least half a dozen full bottles of Almairac perfumes but at the moment I have none…..so…..Oud al Sahraa for today….

and gearing up for next week’s challenge I looked at my credit card bills for the year as I could not remember the last full bottle I actually purchased for myself…guess what? Zero! Every single perfume purchase was a gift…even Assam of India I purchased with a birthday gift card….and yet somehow full bottles have been making their way back to me as I usually purchase for 10 family members and extremely close friends and we are constantly swapping bottles…

    Happy Friday, y’all!

hey Jenkr! Guess I wasn’t clear….I made oodles of purchases this year of full bottles but they were all gifts for family members and friends (none for me)….and somehow some of them made it back to me-LOL! Case in point, I bought a family member that honkin’ 6.8 oz bottle of Orange Sanguine…she chose to decant it and left me with the full bottle :)…same can be said for many other bottles…

I love the Bottega Veneta image at the top of today’s post. That’s one fierce pout.

Happy B-day, Britney Spears, what a life. I would give her a place in the NST pantheon for the day. Perhaps not at the top with Donatella, but I think she’s earned a pedestal somewhere.

Planning to visit Tysons later today, so I was checking what brands Neiman Marcus carries. I’d like to check out how the repackaged and presumably reformulated Annick Goutal brand has held up and also the Profumi del Forte brand.

I also noticed that they have the La Panthere extrait, which I would buy for the bottle if I had money to burn:

I’m wearing the original Gucci Pour Homme (my last bottle, panic time!) –It’s my favorite smoky woody incense, along with Zagorsk. It’s one of the few perfumes, along with Lalique’s Encre Noire, that my DH and I actually fight over (but they’re both mine, really, I swear). I haven’t tried the one MA did for Lalique, has anyone tried it?

Nice place to grow up! I can’t speak to the change there, but I grew up in LA which has changed a lot since I lived there last (1991), in some ways, for the better. The cropping up of mini mansions where Spanish style ranch homes were is not one of the positives.

Twins! You smell lovely! I bravely went with a full spritz???? This is one of my early perfume loves, and still one of my all time favorites. It’s the only perfume (and I’ve said this before so pardon my redundancy) that I’ve purchased after smelling on a strip inside a magazine. It was released the same year I graduated from college, so it was a splurge for me. It holds many good memories.

OH! While I’m here, I thought I’d ask: someone wrote to my blog recently asking if I had any suggestions for a new fragrance. Her longtime favorite, Bill Blass for women, is discontinued and she’s down to the last drops in her last bottle. Doesn’t want to buy vintage on ebay (apparently tried it and got burned with a bottle that had gone off and was expensive to boot). Would rather purchase in person and is not really interested in the Monday Mail (I asked). She said she’d bought J’Adore l’Or but hadn’t opened it; I advised her to go have a good thorough spritz from the tester at the store first.

Anybody familiar with it and can offer some other suggestions? She hates Norell (suggested to her as a possible substitute) and is allergic to Ralph Lauren Lauren. BBfw appears to be a green floral with a warm mossy-amber base. I did suggest Safari, but she couldn’t find it at the mall.

Anybody? I’d really like to help her out.

The original Bill Blass from the late 70s? That was one of my first “grown up” perfume purchases I made on my own! took the city bus with a good friend to Macy’s (we were in 7th grade at the time) and bought that along with Tatiana…..

gosh I haven’t seen that one mentioned in ages! I remember it was sweet…pineapple? It reminded me a bit of Alfred Sung (another good one)…maybe the Sung might be easier to find…fragrancenet? Or else another contemporary with a pineapple accord…. a family member left me with her bottle of Nest Midnight Fleur and I swear there is pineapple in that one…and that can easily be sampled at Sephora…I am going to look now if fragrancenet sells Sung…..

We are heading to Florida for a small vacation, and I will start packing soon. I am trying to decide what perfumes to pack for six days. So far these have made the cut: No. 5 L’eau, No. 19, Hermes Rose Ikebana and Atelier Mandarine Glaciale.

I’m a worried wreck today. My brother who was slated to visit next week ended up in the ER last night with some cardiac symptoms and is supposed to have a cardiac catheterization today to check for blockage. I’m hoping for the best possible outcome for him. All prayers welcome!
My SOTD is Lalique le Parfum courtesy of the ever generous Petunia. I tried it last night and I love it so far. Soft, pretty, warm with a bay note that gives it some earthiness. It’s a comforting veil today.

I love the Bottega Veneta bottle. I don’t have it, because something in there gets wonky on my skin, but I’m very glad that it gets plenty of love.

The only Almairac I have at hand is a sample of Roses de Chloe, but it didn’t feel quite right on this cold and cloudy day.

So, I’m still in Winter Antidote land, with Fils de Dieu on the left arm, and a swipe of Bronze Goddess on the right. These have enough heft to be noticeable, and they are not intimidated by cold temps.

    Tea:
Mightly Leaf Green Tea Tropical. It has pineapple, and it’s cheerful.

This is one of those “things most people don’t know about me” situations: although I love my morning skincare and perfume and like to dress up and put some makeup on, I can get ready really quickly when need be. My record is a full opera look in 5 minutes: black dress, tights, heels, hair up, base, mascara, liner, red lipstick, clutch, go. I think I even had a red rose in my hair:) On ordinary days, I’m happy to skip makeup, so that helps – I just need to put my contacts on, brush my teeth and find these f***ing keys!

Absolutely agree on the scent – excellent for the office. I have one of those beautiful 2ml Malle samples on my desk.

I don’t have any Michel Almairac. I have been slightly profligate as a result of trying 1ml samples instead of my usual 2ml.
SOTE last night was Clive Christian “L”, worn to the Christmas Market in Paris. The balsam fir and petitgrain was fresh but ultimately too toned down for my tastes.

SOTD started as Arquiste “El”, which was okay but a bit ‘generic men’s stuff’. I have switched to “Nanban”, which is slightly odd to spray from a sample as I have a FB at home, but it’s lovely.

Sitting in CDG airport waiting for the flight to BHX. I am tired with a stress headache and the next (and for me final) three weeks on this programme can not go fast enough.

In Casmir this morning. I have started the holiday season by putting the wreath on the door and lighting the Thymes Frasier Fir candle. I am a total tech klutz and posting pictures of my furniture and fumes for sale is making me want to bang my head against the wall. I might put on something a bit more serenity-inducing later on, Casmir is quite a ride.

Finally stopped lurking and started participating! SOTD is Voleur de Roses by L’Artisan from a small decant I bought last month. The patchouli is really coming through – it’s actually quite lovely but it might be better for patch lovers, rather than mere patch likers like me.

Thanks all! I’ve always loved patchouli scented soap (Caswell-Massey was my favorite until they discontinued it) and I’ve realized it’s one of those scents that I love for 20 minutes but not the whole day . . .

Welcome! I tried Voleur de Roses very early in my sniffing addiction, my tiny decant is long gone, so I must try it again. I remember thinking it didn’t smell much of rose, but my nose might have quite a different view now.

I was expecting more rose too – then I realized the name translates to “thief of roses” so I guess they’re missing on purpose? I get a little around the edges, but mostly a dark green scent.

I wore Bottega Veneta yesterday, and it is one of my year-round go-to fragrances – I’d possess the entire body line if I could, and I also love the Eau Legere version as well. So for today I’m wearing Cabaret which I like very much but rarely wear. I really like it for a unisex warm but not dirty rose. It gets better the longer it’s on and the soapy notes are replaced by warm woody accords, and it also smells good year round, which I think is unusual for woody roses.

Saturday, and I absolutely MUST attend to some much needed housework. I somehow could not combine the sparse elegance of BV with vacuuming, dustng and other mundane tasks, and since it’s my only perfume that fits the project., I get a “Did Not Achieve” grade today! I chose the invigorating green of Silences, and how I wish there were some! The city was loud with shrieking revellers and revving motors last night, but I suppose everyone was having fun. Super for them….Silences is energising, which is good, because I know that Dakkie has lost two of his knitted mice under the fridge, (they get about, those mice) so I need to pull it out to retrieve them, and I might as well scrub the walls and floor and defrost the freezer while I’m about it, and that will make me want clean the oven as well. Yay for Saturday and domestic pursuits! When all that’s behind me, I’ll shower hugely and wear something fat and delicious and lazy, maybe Ambre Narguile. I love anticipating my next gorgeous perfume!

May you and yours be safe and well.

I hope you have a great sense of accomplishment after putting some order back into the world – that’s my favorite part of cleaning. I know what you mean about silence – I have company, and I wish that I could have a bit more silence to decompress after a loud day with high school students.

I have been having a major amber craving lately but own no amber perfumes. Should I try Ambre Narguile first?

Well, I have to say I adore it! I was given a sample by my optician, sprayed right there in his rooms, and fell deeply and instantly in love. I didn’t stop agitating then until I owned a bottle. My first back up bottle was diverted elsewhere, but I now have a safe second bottle (only 15 mls, though) in my possession, and the next time I’m in Melbourne, will probably buy another. It smells warm and golden, reassuring and –this always surprises me — a little sexy: it has hints of spice, of apples, of a little tobacco, of amber, of course, of buttery crumble on a fruity pudding….all these suspended in warm light. I love gourmands as a type, but some I could manage without with perfect equanimity. This one is a necessity in my collection, like Black Cashmere and 31 Rue Cambon.

I have a confession to make. The other day i accidently vacuumed up the bottle of Epice Marine you gave me. I was trying to ‘vacuum smart’ i.e. Get the dog hairs off my desk without going to the trouble of moving papers, perfume samples, fountain pens, books…so I was carefully nozzling between the piles when, swear to God, the epice marine made a run for the vacuum and disappeared up the tube. What a terrible adventure for such a fine fragrance! Such indignity. You should have seen it as i went through the vacuum cleaner bag, parting dust, dog hairs, nail clippings ( not mine), chocolate wrappers to rescue the Hermes. I am in disgrace. Forgive me!

Perfume Sync Battle here. I don’t get it. I got a sample of Beloved yesterday …. Now that I’ve gone over to the dark side, ordering samples. Sprayed it and thought this is just a mixture of Mitsouko and Nahema? So then I tried a side by side of Mitsouko and Nahema ( a two step business involving a trip to the perfume counter for Nahema where everyone is getting sprayed with Coach). I discovered that having a head and nose positioned between one arm sprayed with Beloved and another arm in Mitsouko/Nahema is asking for trouble…ended up punch drunk…or Ann Hathaway doing Wrecking Ball or Ben Kingsley doing Rocket Man ( you know what I mean, don’t pretend you haven’t watched it ) But they are so similar.? Aren’t they? Though now, 15 hours later, Beloved is nicely rich and spicy whereas M/N is more rose. Going to wear Zadig &Voltaire For Her today for detox. Beloved! I …just…don’t …understand….sob.

    SOTD = Guerlain Cuir Beluga

I enjoyed Cuir Beluga yesterday that I decided to do a repeat performance. It’s a big fail for the community projec but I smell pretty darn good!

Since I chimed in late yesterday, I’ll mention again that I opened Door #1 of my M. Micallef Advent Calendar and the treat was a 5 mL splash bottle of Ananda. On first sniff, it is a fruity floral. The calendar comes with a 30 mL bottle of Ananda so I will spray it on to get the other facets in the base – vanilla, musk and mimosa. Interestingly enough, I can open the box and peek at everything behind each door, but since I need more excitement in my life, I will be disciplined and be surprised each day!

Holiday Windows Report – Saks Fifth Avenue on 50th Street — This was the.best one yet out of the ones I’ve seen. The theme is The Nutcracker. The designers did a great job rendering the characters and the scenery without relying on digital imagery (which, in my opinion, is a somewhat lazy short-cut). Each Act was beautifully depicted and, together with the music playing in the background. brought the viewer into the scene. I was salivating over the candy ribbons as they looked so real!

I did wear a Almairac yesterday and most of the morning- Anna Sui La Nuit De Boheme edt . Showered up with BBW White Citrus and am considering some Aqua de Parma Parfumo ( vintage) . I’m just not in the mood for the others of his right now. ( Casmir is a bit much soon after a migraine and Cabaret is similar to a Amouage I was testing the day one of our pet dogs got put to sleep)Taking it easy today as Wednesday I had a sinus/migraine that kept me from choir practice. Was mostly over it when my Dad asked me to be available to pick him up from the ER ( kidney stone passing) he called for pickup at 2:15 am . I had Thursday work shift 9:30am-2:30pm . Got home fed the sickly 10 yr old kitty and found out my older cat was sick ! We had to take her to the animal ER -thankfully it was just a UTI , so meds and fluids and she’s herself. Whew!

No MA anywhere, so in a single spritz of SB Bollywood or Bust. It’s one of a couple of perfumes I have that work better underspritzed. I know LL Patchouli is another one. Thanks, Perfume Office Grump, for making me test my entire collection for your sensitivity!

Three spritzes of Soivohle Riverwalk today in the absence of anything Almairac. Like opening a can of patchouli whup-ass.

Wearing just one spritz from a bottle of Chopard’s Casmir. It still smells great to me!

I don’t own a single Michel Almairac, so I wore Bvlgari Black because I like it. It looks like I should acquaint myself with Voleur de Roses, though.

I’m joining several of you in Chopard Casmir today. Casmir was one of the first fragrances I purchased long ago from T.J. Maxx when I first began reading about perfume on the Internet. All the raves plus the notes indicated it would be a scent I’d like. I am fond of vanilla-based scents and enjoy sweet and gourmand fragrances, but there is something very off-putting in this scent (peach? apricot?) that is so syrupy and cloying I just don’t enjoy it. I haven’t worn it for several years for that very reason, and I thought today’s community challenge would be a good time for a retry. But, alas, my reaction is still the same: heavy, syrupy, and cloying, even with just a small spray. Despite having individual notes, all of which I enjoy, the cumulative effect is just not for me.
