Friday scent of the day 11/11

Posted by Robin on 11 November 2016 271 Comments

stone

Happy Veteran's Day, and happy Iris Friday! Our community project for today: wear an iris fragrance, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I went with Prada Infusion d'Iris Absolue. I'm wearing it over the remnants of last night's Aftelier Ancient Resins, which I put on as soon as I heard that Leonard Cohen had left us.

Reminder: 11/18 will be No Brainer Friday — wear one of your seasonal "no brainer / go to" fragrances. Thanks to SheriG for the suggestion!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Wearing Chanel 28 La Pausa EdT. So fleeting.. I plan to switch to Prada Infusion d’Iris as it wears off.

    R.I.P. Leonard Cohen..

Scent triplet with the 28 La Pausa, courtesy of Hajusuuri. Only 3 sprays for me, though.

31 Rue Cambon. Amazing perfume with dry wood and fizzy aldehydes. I do not think of iris immediately when I put it on, but later I can detect something like makeup, and that must be it.

    TGIF and hello twin!

Drinking: Roasted Oolong. Oolong tea roasted over good quality charcoal to give a elegant smoky nuance. Love it.

Cuir de Russie for today. It’s been a sad week already and with Leonard Cohen’s passing, I just.. well.. I just need some more beauty in my life right now. So it’s Chanel and Handel’s Tamerlano in the headphones.

Yes! Music. That is what I need. Because I write, or struggle to write (boring reports or plans, nothing lyrical, but I won’t swear they are never fictional) all day, I tend to need quiet. But I think some Satie, a candle, and coffee, might get me through.

I totally forgot about the iris challenge today. If I’d remembered, I’d probably have worn Cuir de Lancome. As it is, I’m wearing AG Ce Soir ou Jamais edp. Since there are about 100 ingredients in this one, I’m sure there is some iris lurking in there somewhere. It seemed like a good day for a rich rose.

I was also planning on the Prada but since I’m working at home today and it seemed too tame I went with MFK Absolue Pour le Soir. I would love to buy a full bottle of this someday, but I wonder if I’ve left it too late and its been discontinued? I sure hope not, its becoming one of my favorites.

Well, I am unexpectedly (and rather expensively) flying home for the weekend instead of spending it in Paris. That said, I had intended popping into Jovoy so it might have been fairly expensive to stay. But the other Mr Koenigsberg is going through a bad patch with his MS so I wouldn’t have enjoyed being away from home while he was housebound.

SOTD is Baruti “Berlin im Winter”, which is a bit all over the shop when it goes on but gorgeous after a few minutes. And it has iris, so I’m sort – of participating. :^)

Happy Veterans Day to all in the U.S. and thank you to all the service members part and present who made/make it possible for us to enjoy our freedom.

Stay safe johanob and merlin — heard about the flooding in Joburg.

Stay safe those of you / us who may encounter the protests that are going on. I escaped the worst of the crowds in NYC on Wednesday on my way home.

SOTD = Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist

One tiny spritz so as not to aggravate scent phobes at home. I have many iris forward perfumes that I think I will also feature that next week and possibly through most of the rest of November!

On the shopping front…yes, finally, the Sephora VIB sale started, online (20VIB and it’s possible it may only work for VIB members) and in store. Saks is having 10% off on Beauty, online only with code VETERAN and if you go in through eBates, you get 8% cash back! I sometimes forget to go through eBates but that cash back adds up — since 2012, I’ve gotten back over $225!

Johano and I can take advantage with all our cosy winter scents that we have had to forego in the heat.

I am wearing Fragonard Iris eau de toilette. Fragonard named Iris their flower of 2016. A beautiful soft iris. Wears well. This week has been filled with shock and sadness. The soft iris reminds us of the beauty in the world. Leonardo Cohen brought us beauty with his music.

L’Attessa today, for the sheer beauty of it. Leonard Cohen’s passing broke what was left of my heart after this week’s events, but he made the world a more beautiful place and I’m so grateful for that. Sending remembrance and tenderness out to the memory of all the young lives lost in the horrible paroxysm of industrial slaughter that was the First World War. What a mess we humans make of things.

Gorgeous day here in the swamps! Finally got my rear back to spin class this morning and now plan on hitting the shower, then hitting the MFK CPLS. I’m skipping iris today because the only one I have is Hiris, which seems to be best in summer. I really don’t want to encourage the return of that dreaded season, so will go with CPLS which is wonderfully warn and snuggly.

Made a wonderful omelette with broccoli, ham, and cheese just now, and feel fortified and ready to Get. Stuff. Done. My purge continues as I go through the kitchen area. Astounding all the crap I have collected. Tons of stuff I have amassed and maybe only used a few times. It feels great to lighten the load.

    Leonard Cohen, RIP.

    Good Morning- Veteran’s Day.

    1) A quote from Cohen when accepting the Prince of Asturias Prize:

“…. But he (Lorca) gave me permission to find a voice, to locate a voice; that is, to locate a self, a self that that is not fixed, a self that struggles for its own existence.

And as I grew older I understood that instructions came with this voice. What were these instructions? The instructions were never to lament casually. And if one is to express the great inevitable defeat that awaits us all, it must be done within the strict confines of dignity and beauty.”

    2) Infusion d’Iris. Perfect for this foggy morning.

    3) Cafe au lait with almond milk, and a big sugar donut.

    4) I wish to say thank you to our veterans. My immigrant family has had 4 soldiers serve with distinction in the US Marine Corps.

I’m wearing Mon Parfum Chéri par Camille, which isn’t all about iris, but it’s one of the main players. One of my favourite Goutals and one of my favourites for this time of year. I love how uncompromising it is and how bold, great when in need of moral support or spine stiffening.

Sad to hear about Mr. Cohen, but apparently he had reconciled himself to his approaching end.

Tea this morning was Assam Halmari and the next pot will be prepared in a little while.

The news of Leonard Cohen’s death last night was the capper of a week that was tough for the Aparatchicks in every possible way. But I’m trying to remember his insightful words:

    The birds they sang
    At the break of day
    Start again
    I heard them say
    Don’t dwell on what
    Has passed away
Or what is yet to be
    …

Ring the bells that still can ring
    Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in

I’m not much of an iris fan (ok, that’s an understatement) but in theory I’m wearing Viktoria Minya Hedonist Iris, which does have a lovely clear-as-a-bell iris note.

I say ‘in theory’ because it’s actually still packed away in the basement with my other winter perfumes. It’s been so warm here for the past few days I’ve been wearing shorts. Crazy.

I love the beautiful, stately iris that bloom in my garden, but the appeal of the iris note in fragrances has eluded me. Having sampled various ‘iris’ scents, most leave me rather indifferent at best and sometimes quite literally, cold. Such is my experience with my SOTD, FM Iris Poudre. I’m turned off by the cold opening (not a refreshing cool, but an almost metallic one) but then the fragrance settles down softly and becomes more enjoyable. Although I like its aldehydes and powdery note, and despite its many accolades, Iris Poudre, like Chanel No. 5, is tolerable but just ‘meh’ to me; I wouldn’t mind smelling it on someone else but have no desire to wear or own it. More left for those of you who love it to enjoy!

Using up the last bits of my Ancient Resins for Leonard Cohen, but I’m sure I’ll dig up some iris before too long…the others this week served to be a bit of a balm (but everything keeps getting worse, right?)

I had no immediate answer to your question, but see Sistine’s post below — 16 year olds shushing each other to hear the lyrics to the Leonard Cohen songs. There are little bits of joy and beauty everywhere.

I was so sorry to hear about Leonard Cohen’s death. I have been a fan since his early recordings. So much beautiful music. I’m not in an iris this morning, I’m trying to get going early and so I grabbed the first thing my hand hit–Origins Ginger Essence. About as far from iris as you can get, I think!

I figure that Artist’s Studio is really an iris perfume but viewed from the standpoint of the painter rather than the vase of flowers. But I’m not wearing that either…as I am wearing Epice Marine , which I adore ( thanks WD).

I am in shock to be the first person who chose Hiris today. I tried Xerjoff’s irisss yesterday and was happy that while it was nice, it wasn’t required. (My wallet was also happy! I had been sitting on that sample for 6 months, afraid to try it in case it was perfect.)

I have been playing Leonard Cohen all morning, and 10th grade students are really digging his work. They all know ‘Hallelujah” from Shrek, and are excited to hear the original. You know a man was a true poet when 16 year-olds are shushing each other because “I can’t hear the words!”

    Fragrant peace to everyone.

I was so happy when Shrek made Hallelujah popular with the kids. I teach music classes for young people. No school today, so next week I’ll dust off the Leonard Cohen lessons.

Iris Poudre for me today, one of my top 10 favourites, paired with a Paisley Etro purple and dak blue scarf.
I’m also sad to see Leonard Cohen go, such a legend.
Wearing Iris Poudre again tomorrow to a charity ball, I’m wearing a navy and burgundy strapless vintage 40s/50’s dress and burgundy shoes, and the perfume seems to match.

Good morning. I can’t be sad about Leonard Cohen’s death because he was himself so entirely accepting of the inevitable end., but yes, may he rest in peace or wander free, as the case may be. I have no idea what happens next, but whatever it is, I hope he likes it.

So. My iris perfume today is my new Hermessence Iris Ukiyoe, which is really a cheat, because iris flowers don’t smell. This is a pretty perfume, though, good for a jeans-and-jumper day. I’m enjoying it very much. Later I might play with Misia or something a bit heavier.

I have given myself two things to accomplish this gloomy Saturday: I’m going to tidy (1) my perfumes and (2) my scarves. I’ve been putting both tasks off so long that I actually had to write them down on my “To Do” list to make sure I would attend to them. It’s quite pathetic that I have to resort to such ploys to get things done, but there it is: before I wrote them down, I drifted from day to day annoyed by the messiness., but too bone idle to do anything about it. Now that I’ve entered the mess as tasks, I won’t be happy until I have placed ticks beside them. Is this weird? Am I the only person on the planet helplessly in the grip of a “To Do” list?

I am completely dependent on “To Do” lists. Last summer, I was getting ready for a trip and having semi-panic attacks because I’d chosen to rely on the list from a previous trip rather than writing out a new, more specific list for the upcoming trip. Of course, I can do some things without a list, but I’m blown about by whims rather than priorities, and end up avoiding key tasks.

And yes, I do not hesitate to add tasks to my lists after I’ve done them, just so that I can cross them off. :)

You know, my sister keeps a three-tier To Do list: a master list of all lists, then the lists organised by category–house, broken down by rooms, social things (Ali organises EVERYTHING, everywhere), miscellaneous, etc, etc., then each task on each list broken into sub-tasks. I swear I’m on one of her lists somewhere, probably headed “Little sister-recalcitrant”.

Yes, subcategories always! During one particularly busy period, the subcategories were WHERE the task needed to be done, so that if I went downtown, for example, I could take care of multiple downtown tasks in an afternoon, thus reducing the number of time-consuming trips downtown.

Forgot to bring an iris with me to CA, so am in Alahine decant from a generous NSTer!

But…my scent yesterday was amusing. Went to Walmart wth my sister to buy up small necessities to throw in the suitcase to bring back to NYC. I was just about out of all those things like allergy medicine, body lotion, pain stuff….

I couldn’t resist….I bought an Old Spice Amber body spray.
It’s powerful for a while but I like it…. I’m thinking I want my husband to try it as a counter to his more citrusy men colognes, much as I love Colonia on him. I’ll just have to warn him one spritz only.

I’m probably the only one in my choice for Iris Friday: Jivago 24K. It’s a powdery-leaning BWF that has the same feel as Amouage Gold. Reduce Gold’s animalic overdose and substitute its LOTV with tuberose, and you’ve got 24K.

It’s the polar opposite of Iris Silver Mist and Irisss, both of which I love. But this Iris is warmer and sweeter, spicier which makes it SING in the cold weather. If you decide to buy it do a google shopping search, I found mine at a discounter (Beautyhabit? Fragnet? Can’t remember.) And it was almost 50% less than in the stores.

Oh, and this is the regular, not the “extreme” version. Hope this helps!

I did wear 1932 edp today. It has more oomph and longevity than the edt, but it isn’t as pretty, in my opinion. It’s less floral, and more like 31 Rue Cambon Lite.
