Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, National Cat Day 2016

Posted by Robin on 29 October 2016 249 Comments

Orange Cat in Pumpkin Costume

Happy National Cat Day! And a quick PSA: our Ferragamo giveaway is still open.

We're doing our usual open thread. Talk about anything you like — the perfume you’re wearing today, your cat's favorite fragrance, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Sotd = Eau des Merveilles because Saturday.

Hurray for National Cat Day! Cats deserve a day off from their hard work keeping the internet up and running.

I just wanted to say that I tried Balenciaga Rumba the other day for the first time and I am impressed, I have never smelled anything like it, it is definitely a loud fragrance so I didn’t wear it today since my days consists of going to a church Bazaar but I would wear it when I go out dancing salsa, it will be perfect for that, instead I am wearing Balenciaga Prélude which I love.

Orange Sanguine…which bloomed beautifully in yoga this morning….I forgot how much I love this one and how happy it makes me every time I wear it….I really do need to wear it more often……

Orange Sanguine is a wonderful scent. You and your yoga space smell great.

I’ve been using up a decant of Guerlain Cologne du 68. Its similarity to another fragrance keeps nagging at the edge of my brain. I think it’s Orange Sanguine. Must wear both this weekend to see if you’ve solved the mystery. :)

I usually save this one for summer but the weather was nasty cold this morning and I needed a mental pick me up and Orange Sanguine really did the trick…I think I might start wearing it in the winter…..

All those spices make me think of a pomander (the clove-studded orange variety) which I associate with Christmas, so it’s always been a winter scent for me.

I know you are a big fan of Atelier…wonder why Orange Sanguine doesn’t work? Does Cedrat Enivrant work? Because that one seems similar……

Yes, Cedrat is okay. Orange gets weirdly plastickey on me

Hi lucasai, I get the plastic smell at the far end of Orange Sanguine, too, and sometimes from Cedrat Enivrant as well. I’ve wondered if those odd notes have something to do with the longevity Atelier is known for. It’s not a problem if I apply more of the scent, and I like the top notes enough to make that sacrifice. :)

You could try Blood Oranges by Shay & Blue as an alternative. They’re very similar.

I’m using my Saturday off waiting for a guy to come who possibly, maybe will fix the problem with my plumbing. This has been a week long nightmare. Please keep all fingers crossed. Today I put on Narciso EDP. I am wondering if anyone here can tell me more about the Poudree version? The edt seemed a little thin for me.

I tried the Poudrée, but as the name implies, it was powdery and I am not big on powder. It was not any heavier than the edp on me though.

The poudree struck me as being flatter than the EDP, or like a sufficated version of the EDP…powdery, like Cazaubon says. I liked the EDP best and the EDT and Poudree not so much.

      • kpaint says:

In total agreement on it being flatter. To me the EDT is very close to the EDP but with the lush floral heart replaced by one that’s lighter and fresher. The Poudree is like the EDP with the floral heart completely excised and it wears very flat on my skin. I love powder and was hoping to love this one but it just doesn’t do anything for me. Very disappointing as I absolutely love the other 2.

    Hello Robin, hello NST!
Inspired by a review of MFK Petit Matin that Robin posted last week I got a hold of a sample and been testing it today. It’s nice, crisp and clean and easy to wear.

But the fact is that I’m really lusting over Grand Soir. I got a sample of this one too & as curious as I am I sprayed a little bit on top of my arm and man, instant love and swoon. I think I might be needing to buy a bottle of this one!

YOU PEOPLE. Are finally getting to me. I don’t use oils so I’ve been able to ignore previous Tauer oils convos but I am starting to break down.

A couple of questions: I love PHI but do not like the other Tauer roses I’ve tried (Incense, Chypre, Vermeille.) I tend to love rose scents in general, however. What are the chances I’ll like the Rose body oil?

Second Q: How are you all using the oils? Post-shower as a moisturizer? Sprayed on as a fragrance? Other?

      TY

It doesn’t smell like a Tauer rose. It has no Tauerade. It’s a bright juicy rose-geranium up top that morphs into a spiced ambery vanilla. I use it straight up since it’s really a perfume in itself and lasts a long time on me. I’ve layered it with other roses. I’d say it’s a safe blind buy considering the price. I don’t think I’ve seen any haters in this one yet!

I agree with Elisa P’s and cazaubon’s comments, the only difference being that I dislike PHI but do enjoy the Rose oil. It’s just a lovely, warm rose oil. I spray a little on post-shower as a moisturizer; it’s strong enough to wear alone but I sometimes use a spritz or two of another fragrance.

We are celebrating National Cat Day by tripping over the five who are attempting to get in the house. Titania is NOT ALLOWED but that hasn’t ever stopped her from trying. The ranch is tilling one of the nearer fields and it’s a bit noisy outside. Tonight the four who sleep inside will be extra pampered by being allowed to bed down with us. Their bedroom will be cleaned for human occupation and they’ll have to share Mom’s room with Mr. Minion and myself. Yippee.
My cousins arrive tomorrow, except for the one who decided he couldn’t wait and showed up unexpectedly yesterday, so we are doing final bits of cleaning and moving stuff around outside so we can wash the house. I decided that with all the dust in the air I would need something fairly natural and outdoorsy so I’m wearing Sultan Pasha Pure Incense again. It is so good! I keep stopping to huff my wrists.
Also, if anybody fancies a pale grayish-blue nail polish with holo and rose/gold shimmer, do try Clever Girl from ILNP. It is absolutely stunning and the formula is amazing. It has lasted through three days of hard work so far.

Wow! There’s a day for everything! The cat is cute!

    SOTD = Dior Addict

I got a bottle from the Swapmeet – OMG! Smells divine and potent. I eeked out less than one full sprtiz 2 hours ago and I am still wafting in its goodness. I was also lucky enough to have received a huge decant of vintage Dior from a kind NST fairy earlier this year.

In the realm of random questions – what’s your secret of picking out a sweet cantaloupe?

By fragrance. ;) A sweet cantaloupe smells good, is heavy for its size, and might have a little give at the stem end.

If they’re smelly, they’re probably good. If you have to buy a green cantaloupe, try to get a nice firm one that is heavy for its size and take it home to ignore for a week or so. Cantaloupe are usually ripe when they begin to stink up your kitchen but before they are getting squishy. This applies to honeydew, canary melon, sprite melon, and other muskmelons as well (yes, they are good IF you allow them to ripen fully). I usually cut a melon one day after I start to notice the funky odor when I walk by.

I always choose my melons by the smell, and I only buy them in season — the rest of the year they always seem to me like pale, bland versions of their potential glory.

I love the pumpkin cat picture. Cats know they were born to model!
I randomly sprayed a La Pausa EDP sample and forgot what it was. I smelled my wrist and wondered what the lovely round iris fragrance was. Then I remembered and sprayed EDT on the other side, recalling that there was a lot of disappointment over the EDP. Well, if you aren’t expecting La Pausa, the EDP is soft, quiet, and the 2 sprays are going on 3 hours longevity so far. So, perhaps it is a flanker? ;-) .

We went to our favorite local Cat Cafe here today to pet the kitties since we don’t currently have a cat of our own. Such a fun place and the food is good too – great grilled cheese sandwiches and hot chocolate (it is 5C and raining here in Montreal, ugh).

Wearing Byredo Seven Veils today. Also stopped by Lush and picked up Lord of Misrule shower gel, lavender body cream and another bottle of Kerbside Violet since you can’t buy it in California. Two more days here and then we are flying to San Diego!

National Cat Day is making me miss my late, lamented diva cat, Pooky. She had the nose of a bloodhound, and sniffed my arm every day to see what perfume I was wearing. She was especially fond of anything with a boatload of amber in it.

Thanks to hannahmom, I will soon be the proud owner of Andy Tauer’s latest. I ordered a bottle of the amber oil yesterday, and added two of the rose for Christmas presents (for family members, not me…..I think).

I am going to go nutty this week and focus on chesnut, almond and hazelnut scents. So today I am re-testing Zadig & Voltaire This is Her for a chesnut hit from a sample. I like this perfume more and more…recommend it if you like the Dior Poison flankers, SL Rahat Loukoum, Dame vanilla or musk perfume oils, or the Angels. Thanks to the NST master chefs I will also make a stack of pancakes with chestnut cream topping and have breakfast in bed…after a week sleeping on the floor I have my own bed back and the guests have gone ( anticipating several loads of washing and hoping the sun shines…we had a dusting of snow on the hills yesterday).

Happy Caturday! I have 2 very spoiled kitties, but they are so sweet and affectionate, it’s hard not to spoil them. My male cat really likes several SSS fragrances and finds them lickable. He is deathly afraid of a stinky oud oil blend I bought. Like it was another cat or animal. It does smell pretty raunchy.

Hooray for National Cat Day! I’ve always loved kitties. ‘My’ cats are the local bobcats, and we used to have a wandering neighborhood cat named Charlie, who was abandoned by people who moved away. I once happened to look out a window just in time to see a bobcat being chased out of my front yard by Charlie!!! Darnedest thing I ever saw.

Hello, all, from beautiful, beautiful Tasmania. It’s so pretty here that I’ve stopped chatting because I’m so busy looking and thinking, and the dear man keeps asking if I’m cross or sick. Neither–just pleased to be somewhere that fills the eye like a gift! I think that I have finally found some place other than A-NZ that I could live and be happy. Tasmania feels encompassable, as though I could fit the whole community into my head at once.

Oh, and we’Ve seen wombats –so sort of rounded and woolly — and wallabies, and we met a currawong with a wicked eye and a strong desire for my chicken sandwich. He had No Manners At All, but what he did have was a very big beak. Hmmmm.

My plan to wear Chanel on this holiday is working out fine, though Richard did say he wasn’t keen on Sycomore on me, then wore it himself! That was probably even better than wearing it myself, because I smelt it more that way, so I’m not complaining! When we were in Sydney I tried Angel Muse, but I need to think about it a little more before I buy. It wasn’t instant love, as some of the gourmands are for me., but it was intriguing.

Be well, all. We’re heading further south today, towards Swansea. It’s not warm, but who cares, when everything is so beautiful? Be well, all.

Hello Waterdragon! I spent a month in Tasmania (based in Hobart, near Salamanca Place ) and fell in love with the place and would love to return. It is fantastic. There are great short walks around Freycinet/Wineglass Bay if you go that way. And Tasmanian cheese is wonderful. Sigh. Double sigh. Triple sigh.

We did some of the walks both round Freycinet and in Cradle Mountain. Gorgeous scenery. Haven’t tried the cheese, but the wines here are delicious. Ate salmon ???? which I still don’t like, even though people keep telling me how fresh it is..it’s a silly comment: .after all, I’m not likely to eat it if it isn’t fresh. Snow in nearly-November? That’s mad! Stay warm.

So envious! I lived in Tasmania for a year when I was ten. We lived on the north shore outside of Burnie (a town called Cooee) but we took a Christmas trip to Hobart. It was beautiful. I still have the koala bear I bought in Launceston…Mister Tes is his name. He is made from kangaroo fur..needs a few repairs. We basically lived in the beach. Water was cold, but we were kids so we didn’t care. Really want to go back someday.

Thank you Mrs. Dalloway for telling me what the kitty was supposed to be–I just wondered why it had a candy dish on its head. I could say that I hadn’t had my coffee or wasn’t wearing my glasses, but that would be a lie. I am just not perceptive when it comes to cats wearing costumes. My kitty hates all scents and ducks her head to get away from me when I try to pet her after spraying on something. Perhaps if I had a scent that smelled like chicken….This morning I found myself in Ulta staring at Stash again so I bought a rollerball. Since I had success getting Bellodgia out of a broken atomizer I will be unstoppable with a rollerball. This afternoon I’m doing laundry, reading about Julia Child’s life (Act two), and eating a grilled sweet Thai chili chicken sandwich on a baguette. Life is good!

I’m not really sure it’s a compliment when they like my perfumes since they have worn a visible spot rolling on the wool rug where a dog piddled, and Doolittle tore a hole in the turf covering herself in deer dung the other day.

He was preceded by Ike, Andrew Jackson, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Aaron Burr (named because his fur felt like a burr cut!), and Teddy (Roosevelt).

Pierce is a real cutie and I love your naming theme! I wish I could say I had some sort of logical naming plan but I don’t, it’s mostly been whatever the cat or dog inspires in me. The dumbest name I think we ever had was for an Old English Sheepdog many years ago. We adopted him when he was two years old from a breeder who had kept him around as a pet because he was undersized and not suitable to breed. For two years he had been called ‘Puppy’ so that’s what we continued to call him all the years we had him; it just didn’t feel right to change his name after that point.

Happy Saturday everyone! Happy National Cat Day to all cat owners! My boyfriend is a cat owner, so I’m sure he is doing something special for his feline friend.
My Saturday was pretty light today. I went to the gym, I went to go vote, and I came home and took a shower. I have been in the bed ever since.
My SOTD is Mon Paris by YSL. This is a beautiful, sensuous fragrance!

Well, early voting in Texas this year was fairly easy. During the week we had long lines. But, I just walked right on in and voted. So glad I was able to get it done and not have to worry about it on election day.
I wonder what is Hilary and Donald’s signature fragrances? Would be interesting to find out.

I’m in Noir Pour Femme – a very light spritzing as I have a massage appointment in half an hour. She is going to get the knot out of my left shoulder blade area or ELSE! I’ve given up on the knot in my right shoulder blade area – it will be with me forever, it seems, so I’ve begun to think of it as a pet and named it Henri.

Wearing the new L’envol de Cartier, bought the little bottle, and enjoying the honeyed old fashioned chypre vibe. While this does not smell exactly like Pino, Quorum or any of the great 70’s and 80’s masculine chypres, it certainly evokes everything I love about them. They have a certain airy cleaness that corresponds so nicely with whatever the stronger notes might be, in this case patchouli. This wears close to the skin but is so affable and different from the usual tepid men’s offerings that I find myself utterly charmed.

Orange cats are my favorite, although I haven’t been owned by one in awhile. My SOTD is my favorite orange-cat scent, vintage L’Origan.

On National Cat Day, I’m grateful not only for the serendipity that brought us the Sisters earlier this year – KittenMonkeySquirrel and her OlderWiserSister – but also for the lasting friendship that’s developed with their former owners, who rescued the pregnant mother cat from a shelter, just hours before she was to be put down. After the kittens were born, they kept the two brothers and allowed us to raise the two girls for them. Now, whenever we go away, the Sisters go back to their former home for family reunion time with their mom and brothers. How lucky they are!

On National Cat Day, I worry about a little black stray cat I’ve named Mary, who I first discovered one hot day in mid-June outside our bedroom window nursing her two 3 or 4 week-old kittens, mirror images of their mom. She was barely bigger than a kitten herself, extremely shy and unapproachable. She helped herself to food we left out for her but after a few days Mary and her kittens disappeared, to be seen only intermittently romping in someone’s yard throughout the summer (we had all the neighbors involved in trying to help so we could find them homes), but never in the same place twice. Then, in late September, another set of 3 newborn black kittens were found by a neighbor in a corner of her yard, and what appeared to be Mary visiting my yard to hunt birds near our feeders. But after a few days the kittens disappeared, although Mary still was seen for awhile occasionally nearby and ate the food we left for her. But now she’s vanished again. Winter’s coming, what will happen? did the kittens survive?, we don’t know. What happened to the first set of kittens? I find myself looking for her each time I leave the house or return and wonder.

We went to our favorite local seafood restaurant tonight for crabfest and treated the Sisters to some fresh crabmeet leftovers. They purred their satisfaction and thanks for National Cat Day!

Love the story of the Sisters! My advice re: Mary would be if someone could trap her in a humane trap and get her to a shelter or vet to be spayed.

That was my (and my neighbors’) plan, but the problem was in both instances we didn’t want to catch her w/o her kittens before they had weaned; hence, our dilemma! The first time they all disappeared and the second time, although Mary was seen for awhile, the kittens disappeared while still newborn. We didn’t know if she’d hid them somewhere (as she usually kept herself well hidden and could never be seen going to a specific location) or if they were dead. If they survived, they’d only be about 5or 6 weeks old now. The June kittens that we spotted only intermittently were seen in numerous locations within at least a square block radius, with many backyards filled with trees and shrubs – perfect places to hide – but impossible to even begin to know where their ‘home’ was. This, even with various neighbors looking! I’m hoping that once the trees and shrubs begin to lose their leaves, we still may be able to find them.

P.S. Any and all suggestions are welcome. I’ve read a lot about feral cats and have various contacts to help but this is the first time I’ve encountered this situation. I live in a suburban neighborhood where most residents have dogs and those few who have cats keep them indoors or, on rare occasions, let their cats out but collared and belled. I suspect she’s been out there awhile. I’ve adopted 3 cats previously who were foundlngs in my back yard but they obviously had been someone’s pets as they were easy to approach and responded well. If approached at all when she has been sighted, Mary runs away.

Hello NST folk! A couple of questions for you:
    1. The other Mr Koenigsberg suggested yesterday I wear a perfume with a bonfire note. I chose 4160 Tuesdays “A kiss by the fireside” – what would you have chosen?
    2. The clocks went back last night so goodbye BST and hello GMT. We’re planning a trip to an Arboretum to enjoy the Autumn colours. What would you choose for such a visit?

Bonfire note – SSS Fireside Intense, Naomi Goodsir Bois d’Ascèse, LL Patchouli 24 or CBIHP Burning Leaves.

I personally love wearing Bois d’Ascese or Bois d’Ombrie in the autumn leaf season.

Favorite incenses: All of the CdG incense series (Avignon and Zagorsk are my favorites among them), PdE’s Wazamba, Norma Kamali, Demeter’s Holy Smoke, SSS Incense Pure, Etro’s Shaal Nur. And I like incense when it’s combined with roses: Caron Parfum Sacre, for example, or Andy Tauer’s Incense Rose.

SOTM is Mohur Extrait. My husband thought it was too strong (one spray!) and didn’t care for it, but i like it. We have a neighborhood Halloween party to go to later. Not sure what I will wear to that. It’s mostly focused around all the kids. Maybe Prada Candy (my unimaginitive but easy Friday scent) or Laurence Dumont Tendre Madeleine.
Our little, loud cat, Mooky, has been the focus of the week. The little toot came down with a relapse of bobcat fever (a parasitic disease carried by ticks causes an illness similar to what Arkansas locals call “tick fever” in humans, which is bacterial). He got super sick the first time and felt pretty bad this time, but got better a lot quicker. He has turned out to be an expensive little kitty, but he’s awfully sweet.

My question for everyone is…what is your celebrity perfume guilty pleasure? A fragrance that you love but it’s not nessiasrly “high end” and sometimes you feel funny when someone ask you what your wearing and you answer under your breath (insert celebrity name here) what about that fragrance makes it your guilty pleasure?

For me, it would have to be Deseo by Jennifer Lopez. It is by no means “high end”, but it smells like it could be. I get so many compliments when I wear it. I wouldn’t necessarily say its a guilty pleasure for me, but its an easy go – to fragrance.

I wear SJP Lovely at times. I enjoy the opening and middle notes very much, but the base gives me a slight headache. So I wear it when I know I’ll be heading into the water (shower, bath, pool, or ocean) within an hour or so. Lovely gets complements so I feel a little guilty knowing I’ll wash it off before it fades.

At this time of year, I like Rihanna Rogue. I’m not usually a fan of leather notes, but this soft suede/patchouli combo feels just right in the fall. Plus my bottle was free with Walgreens points. What’s not to like?

I don’t believe in feeling ‘guilty’ or apologizing for anything I wear, and I actually cringe sometimes when someone hesitates to admit wearing a fragrance they feel is not worthy of a perfumista. I say, wear what you like, and feel good about doing so!
