Friday scent of the day 10/28

Posted by Robin on 28 October 2016 351 Comments

mellocreme pumpkins

It's Treat Friday! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance that reminds you of candy. (Thanks to Happy888cat for the suggestion!)

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Serge Lutens Rahät Loukoum. I do smell delicious.

Reminder: 11/4 will be Peace Out Friday: wear a fragrance that brings / gives peace. Suggested by Lovestosmellgood.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: Brach's Mellocreme Pumpkins are $6 for 22 oz at Candy Warehouse.

Mmmmmm. Turkish Delight. Cousins today Robin – Traversee du Bosphore from a 15ml mini. There is definitely going to be a full size bottle of this in my near future…

Sounds yummy! I wonder if it smells similar to David’s Salted Caramel tea, which I’d describe in exactly the same way.

Finally Friday! Wearing the yummy, yummy Jo Malone Bitter Orange and Chocolate from the swapmeet (thanks Sapphire!) I am so sad that this was a limited edition because I would replace the bottle over and over. It opens with a blast of bitter peel orange (so delicious) dipped in dark chocolate. Unfortunately, the orange note does not last too long, but the chocolate note stays from the beginning to the end. The drydown is a soft cocoa powder, which is wonderful. This fragrance is not too sweet. It has a very moderate sillage but great longevity. I sprayed it at 5am and still going 4 hours later.

Treat FriYAY!!! Happy to have made it this far, this week! LOL! (It’s been a tough week, for some reason!) 🙂

SOTD has already been scrubbed! Hilde Di Soliani Crema Di Latte. Smelled EXACTLY of Milkfuls Candy (one of my faves), or a spoonful of Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk.

Interesting….My 2 girls LOVE it. I LOVE it. My hubby mentioned how terrible it is, and he never has an opinion one way or another. When I got to work, my 2 male coworkers immediately hated it! (The Perfume Grinch nearly gagged.) A nurse who was watching all this perfumery interaction smelled my arm and announced that she hated it too! HA HA HA So I scrubbed it off, and shall be scent naked henceforth for the rest of the day…..

Subjective thing, perfume…is it not? I shall happily wear my sample when I’m alone…. 🙂

I’m wearing Vero Profume Rubj (extrait) and reeling from an unexpected perfume-based tragedy. I went into my stash yesterday to fish out something for today’s challenge; pulled out my prized DSH Scent of Hope bottle and.. and… it was all gone! evaporated! I’ve worn it only once after I got it. I don’t know if I didn’t close the stopper correctly, or it didn’t fit properly, or evil demons came in the night and opened it; all that’s left in the bottle are some crystals and an oily residue. I’m heartbroken! (All those reviews and posts on DSH new releases on the site today aren’t helping either.)
And it was quite a challenge to get this bought and shipped from the US that I don’t know if I can go through the whole thing again.
So Rubj is soothing my sorrows today.

I’ve had some bottles and decants dry out or turn foul and it’s so awful, but an object lesson every time it happens: don’t hoard, but love and enjoy what you have while you have it.

Oh no!!!! Could you put in a couple drops of ethanol (neutral vodka?) to redissolve those crystals? It won’t smell the same, but maybe you could get some good notes out of it! That’s so sad 🙁 How big was the bottle?

15 ml. Thanks – I’ll try the ethanol trick. I’ve no idea how long it’s been like that, but who knows… The box and the packing paper still smell nice though.

I’m so sorry! The DSH perfumes evaporate. I put parafilm, which I got on EBay, around all of the samples and bottles and I think it has helped. I lost the Giverny in Bloom discovery collection.

I am going to be craving a lot of sweets after reading everyone’s scents today! In fact, I think I may ask my husband to bring me home some turkish delight tonight. I’m wearing Gaultier 2, which has an opening that smells exactly like Grape Bubblicious gum to me. Yesterday I got bit by a cat at work, and had to go to the hospital for iv antibiotics, so tonight I just want to eat sweets and relax.

So I just got and finished it. It was tasty but the jam to dough ratio was a little low. More jam and it would’ve got 2 thumbs up.

I don’t really like overly sweet perfumes, so I don’t have much in that vein. I did dig out my D&G The One mini I had, which is a nice mix of floral notes and vanilla and is kinda sweet, so I’m wearing that today.

Hey, a question for those of you outside the U.S.: is the word “toddler” used in your country? I heard it used in a radio story this morning (RIP, Vine) and started wondering where the word came from.

Pretty standard in the UK and Ireland for small children. Apparently ‘to toddle’ is to walk unsteadily, which works for that sort of ‘controlled perpetual falling’ thing that very young kids do.

    Happy Friday!

SOTD: In Philosophy’s Fresh Cream body lotion and cologne. I smell not like candy, but like a very sophisticated yet light dessert, a custard you would have during the day. I got both on sale at Marshall’s a few months ago but just broke it out now. I tend to NOT like Philosophy’s stuff (most of the ‘Grace’ perfumes smell like Rich Women’s Shampoo,) but I must confess I like the Tea Collection, and Fresh Cream is my favorite for layering or ‘softening’ the impact of another strong scent.

Well, the first time it happened, I had no clue as who would think that unscented caused it. A few months later, since the same body lotion bottle was handy, I wore it again and sure enough, rash city. It’s probably whatever was used to mask the fragrance to make it unscented.

I thought I wouldn’t have a qualifying perfume with me but checked my list and was wrong. Am wafting Agonist Isis which, to me, smells like those liquid-filled pineapple hard candies that are wrapped in paper to look like tiny pineapples. I don’t know if they even still make them, though I’ve seen the strawberry version in the past few years. I loved going to the bank with Mom when I was little because they always gave customers a candy with each transaction and occasionally a nice teller would give me a handful for being cute and well behaved 😀

Hurrah, the end of another week. The week itself hasn’t been too bad, but this time of the year I start feeling like I am dragging my weary carcass towards the finishing line that is the Christmas break. All the stressful days and sleep-deprived nights of the year seem to team up with the dwindling daylight and sinking temperatures and everything seems so *effortful*.

Anyway, all this week I have been intrepidly yadda yadda five samples yadda yadda sweet treat. #5 on my list and today’s SOTD is BeauFort London “Lignum Vitae”.

    Top: black pepper, red fruits, biscuit, sea notes, mandarin orange, citron, bergamot, juniper, ginger, lime, olibanum and caramel;
    Mid: guaiac wood, vetiver, pepper and agarwood (oud);
Base: sand, sea salt, amber, olibanum, musk, vanilla and oakmoss.

I like BeauFort’s earlier stuff even though it verges on the unwearable for many people, with its ‘maritime history’ aesthetic and challenging notes of blood, metal, opium, seawater and so on. So I was surprised to sniff this earlier in the year and think “gingerbread!”. Wearing it all day today other notes are evident, especially a lime top note I missed first time, but on the downside it’s not as long-lived as the earlier scents.

Treat factor: 4/5, it is warm and comfortable, if not as exciting as its predecessors.
If this were a sweet it would be: a lime cheesecake with a base made of crushed gingernut biscuits and melted butter.

I wore Bal to my divorce negotiation sessions.
I figured smelling freshly shagged would be a psychological point for me.

It is very very very sweet. it really does smell like candy. (It comes accompanied by a few pieces of candy, such as Mary Janes, as if to drive home the point!)

I wore it to work yesterday and was surprised by both the lack of reaction from those around me and the lack of cloyingness I was expecting to follow me through the day.

To sum it up, I do like it, but I will probably like it more once the weather gets really cold. I’ve not smelled anything else like it. But then, I tend to avoid sweet fragrances.

Prada Amber, which smells a lot like orange and chocolate on my skin. I also put on some Prada Candy lotion this morning, but it had gone sour, so after some scrubbing, I topped it all of with Philosophy Fresh Cream lotion.

I’m a cheap treat today in CSP Amour de Cacao. I smell super delish! All the talk of the Tauer body oils (Amber!) is really testing my no buy resolve…

Apropos of nothing, I had my FJ at the dealers a few weeks ago to get some maitenance done, and asked about getting my weather stripping along the windows replaced because the Florida sun has wreaked havoc on the rubber, resulting in dried and cracked seals.

    345.00 DOLLARS!! ????

I had to decline, went on Amazon, found the OEM seals for 80 bucks, watched a YouTube video, and changed them all out myself in about ten minutes. This was a very satisfactory DIY for me ????

I didn’t think I had many scents that are reminiscent of candy, but a search of the cabinet came up with quite a few. My choice came down to two I haven’t worn in quite a while: Serendipity and CJ Scents’ Flirt. I’m saving Serendipity in case we do a “reminds you of chocolate” day. And I’m wearing Flirt, which is a whirl of caramel, vanilla, and coconut.

Dame Chocolate Man is my SOTD, and I’m enjoying its slightly dry, slightly bitter edge of dark chocolate in its simplest form, my favorite candy. Later, in the spirit of the season and for a Friday night event, I will add the gloriously, tacky PDC Body Fantasies Vampire edp. Its name and bottle belie the luscious gourmand scent within: deep, dark, rich chocolate-covered cherries in a boozy liqueur. Mmmmmm, chocolate . . .

SOTD = Profumum Roma Dulcis in Fundo + Dame Perfumery Chocolate Man

i smell like a vanilla crepe drizzled with caramel and dusted with chocolate powder (reminds me of Milo), with a side of orange slices. What a treat! I have an 18 mL travel spray of Dulcis in Fundo which I bought from Fumerie when I was in Portland in August. Chocolate Man (looking at you chocolatemarzipan) arrived earlier this week from Arizona, along with a bunch of travel sprays and samples. Dulcis in Fundo is citrus and super concentrated vanilla and Chocolate Man smells like malted chcolate (Whoppers!)

I was planning to wear Noir Exquis, but the temperature has gone back into the mid-80s, and I couldn’t bear the thought of a sweet perfume. I’m wearing Escentric 2 instead, and it’s perfect.

It’s been a crazy busy week, and this is the first chance I’ve had to post. I had the coolest experience last night. Way back in 2005 or so, I ordered the Ormonde Jayne sample set and tried them all. I had to store my belongings (including perfume) in a non-air-conditioned storage unit for a few summer months, and when I retrieved my stuff, all of the perfumes had gone vile. I tried a new sample of Ormonde Woman last night, and not only was I immediately transported back to the last few months right before my wedding, but I was blown away by the beauty of the scent, which I had forgotten. It was breathtaking.

NASTY WOMAN (Black Phoenix Alchemy Labs) arrived yesterday in the mail. This is the head shop version of Mon Parfum Cheri par Camille. Less Hillary, more Tia Dalma from Pirates of the Caribbean. Figgy as opposed to MPCPC’s plum. The perfect representation of a burning stick of incense. Strong and tenacious (as any nasty woman would be), the drydown smells more like strawberry, which is a bit cloying to me.

The treat? Smoke and incense in perfumes typically irritate my breathing, much as I love them. This didn’t! Well worth it for those first two incense-y hours. And getting to feel like Tia Dalma. 😉

I’ve just been given a jar of French sweet chestnut cream/paste and was wondering if there are many perfumes with a sweet chestnut note? It’s a lovely scent. Also…how do I use a whole jar of chestnut paste…suspect it will edge its way to the back of the fridge after an initial flurry of tasting and testing. Back home after a great trip north and have three people staying so I’m sleeping on a mattress in the living room…enjoying a moment’s peace before they wake up and I take them tea and coffee and make breakfast. Guests and rinsing out cups and filling kettles seem to go hand in hand. Scent will be hypnotic poison. It is national bookshop day so I have to Join a ‘writers desk’ at our brilliant university bookshop. Reading a biography of Angela Carter…excellent book. OK..they are getting up. Attach smiley face and moving towards kitchen….

You can keep your extra chestnut paste in the freezer. Lovely folded into whipped cream as a cake filling! And TF Orchid Soleil claims to have a chestnut cream note, and I’d say it does, albeit folded into a Big White Floral.

I’m a candy lover. I always have some form of sweets in my bag, on my nightstand (very bad), at work, it’s just all over. I blame my grandmother for this.
In fact I don’t think there’s a candy I don’t like, and I’m always switching it up. I’m into Swedish fish these days and yummy, really juicy watermelon sour balls.

I’m layering Smell Bent Cocoa Rose (a surprise sample gift from a generous NSTer) with Kyse Mandorlo Ciaccolato, which is pretty much straight up chocolate but a bit of almond and coffee.

I may need to pull out my Holy Chocolate hot chocolate mixes soon… they make a Swiss milk chocolate one that I love.

Late to the party and didn’t participate in the project…wearing Eau Premiere…which smells particularly amazing today for some reason.

I am working from home and just got a bottle of vintage Coco EDP in the mail from 1989…I haven’t sprayed it yet but I sniffed the atomizer and it is beyond amazing.

For those playing along at home, you may remember I have some vintage Coco EDP from the late 80s/early 90s but this was made in the US at Chanel’s factory in upstate NY. From what I know, materials were then (and I believe still currently are) imported in from France but some fragrances are actually made in NY for US distribution. This new bottle was made in France so now I will get to compare vintage Coco EDP made in NY to vintage made in France.

And for me, this is about as good as life gets 😉 …I will probably do the side by side comparison sometime next week and will keep you all apprised. Happy Friday!

Oh do you know where in upstate NY? Now I am curious!
and vintage Coco is amazing! I had been gifted a bottle when it first came out (late 80s??) I wore it to satisfy the gifter but wasn’t over the moon about it at the time and yet drained the bottle..about 20 years later I eeked out a few sprays from the empty bottle and was swooning……the current formulation that I have tested at Sephora is not nearly as good, right?

Jumping in late with Prada Candy Kiss spritzed from a manufacturer sample.

The perfume-speak on the packaging says it all: “Like the smell of White Cotton, fragranced with Orange Blossom and Vanilla . . . ”

Orange blossom? Check. Vanilla? Most emphatically yes. White Cotton? Hmmm, I guess so. There may be something clean and cozy lurking in the background. I hope eau de dryer sheets won’t make an appearance later. At the moment I can see myself finishing this sample then hankering for more more more.

Oooooh, mellowcreme pumpkins are not allowed in my house because I will eat them all right out of the bag. I love one on top of a frosted cupcake, too.

Thanks for all the sweet fun today, NST! I hope the coming days are filled with fragrant treats.
