Friday scent of the day 8/26

Posted by Robin on 26 August 2016 215 Comments

Mo'ne Davis and Grace Coddington for Calvin Klein

Hey, it's finally Friday! Plus, happy Women's Equality Day. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance by Calvin Klein, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm wearing a dab of Calvin Klein Obsession. The temperature is creeping up again here, so a dab is all I will risk, plus, I like Obsession much better at low levels.

Reminder: On 9/2, our project will be How far does the apple fall from the tree? Wear a pillar fragrance on one arm, and one of its flankers on the other. Suggested by Happy888cat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Wearing CKOne which is actually a really nice scent, although I used to be fonder of it then, than I am now. Someone I work with occasionally wears a great CK fragrance, but I can’t remember which one it is.
It’s still very hot here, and I think my ancestors were either Vikings or Eskimo’s: in other words I do much better in colder temperatures.

I wish I had tried more of the CK One flankers…I like the original too, but no longer smells surprising to me.

I went through one of the CKOne summer bottles. In retrospect it wasn’t very good, although fairly enjoyable. I’m surprising myself by how good CK1 actually is. And my 15 year old bottle is still in pristine shape.

I don’t have much in the way of CK but when they launched Truth they did a set of oils that I couldn’t resist buying: it was the scent broken down into five components, Citrus, Sapling, Bamboo, Lilac, and Vanilla. I’m wearing a combination of Citrus, Bamboo, and Vanilla (I didn’t like the other two) and it’s really great — not Truth but its own vanilla-laced green-and-yellow thing.

They did something similar with an Obsession set consisting of a 50-mL spray plus four roll-ons that were the scent broken down into the scent’s main accords (it might have been Amber, Vanilla, Flowers, and Spices, though I didn’t own it so I don’t remember well) so you could amplify one aspect or another. I can’t find any evidence that it ever existed but it really did!

The only thing that even approaches this in recent memory is that Givenchy Ange ou Demon set of Le Parfum plus a wee bottle of Accord Illicite to pump up the leather and patchouli notes. I would love to see a lot more of that sort of thing.

I’m joining you, Robin, in a tiny dab of Obsession. Sadly, it’s a fairly current version and pretty terrible. I keep it because if I squint my brain I can almost smell it as it should be (I admit I liked the men’s version better anyway), and because it’s a reminder that not everyone selling vintage stuff online is legit. I’m off to the gym, then mowing the lawn so I will be applying something more comfortable later. Perhaps in the meantime it will function as mosquito repellent? I would spray the patio to check, but I’m afraid I would asphyxiate my spiders.

Nope. I scrubbed and drowned the remains in No. 5 for anxiety relief. Mom just called and is taking my Newburg cat to the vet this afternoon. He has again done something genius to his foot and she doesn’t want to risk an infection flaring up over the weekend. I’m not a fan of the country vets close by so am feeling very nervous-mother at the moment. I hope nothing horrible bit him, but she says he was fine last night and woke up walking on three legs and hissing every time something bumped his foot. No visible thorns or burs but the top of his toes are swollen and he is sleeping with his foot hanging out of the bed. I hope the little dummy is okay. If he didn’t have to sprint everywhere all the time he probably wouldn’t hurt himself so often (and wouldn’t look half-starved).

In a suitcase somewhere are the dregs of a sample of a sample of Euphoria, but today was a vanilla day, so I’m wearing Jacques Zolty Van-ile. I remember not loving it at first, especially because I was comparing it to Tihota. But on a day when Tihota felt too sweet, Van-ile is *perfect.*

Stole a little bit of my teenage son’s CkOne Shock for Him, which is a nice sheer woody oriental with spices (I can really only do soft/sheer orientals… I hatedhatedhated Obsession). It’s pleasant, but I like it better on him. Also, it’s hot today, so I might wind up dragging out my mini of Eternity (a gift I don’t wear often) or that decant of Truth that Elisa so kindly sent me.

First high school football game of the season this evening, and I’ll be selling pizza for the band boosters. It’s hot, so I may hose myself down with something light before I leave the house. (Luckily, the kids are wearing their band tees featuring this year’s show, rather than full uniform. They had to wear uniform for a couple of hours earlier in the month, in order to take pictures for the football programs, and just from those two hours, the uniforms got sweaty enough to stink up the whole room.)

Sweaty band uniform is a smell I know well, from high school all the way through college. Dousing both one’s self and uniform with cheap-ish fresh/crisp scents comes in very handy until dry cleaning-time rolls around. ???? Good luck with the fundraising!

Scent twins, Robin. I missed all the 80’s perfumes and did not even notice them on others. I would not have appreciated Obsession at the time, anyway. Using the Hajusuuri sample obtaining technique at Macy’s ( brought my own vial and also found an agreeable SA), I procured the only CK I’ve somehow ever tried. The spicy amber vanilla animalic scent was a big surprise. The original must have been quite a creation!

In the airport already in my way to Vancouver for the weekend. I am attending a friend’s wedding tomorrow, so lots of fun is on the way. SOTD Calvin Klein Eternity. From time to time, I borrow some from my mother’s bottle from the 80’s which is still very good. Citrusy and flowery. A pretty fresh scent. I have never tried the reformulations, but I do not have any interest in doing comparisons. It would be probably depressing. Have a nice weekend everyone!

To me, Yatagan starts out with a pine scent–but not exactly fir, but also not Pine Sol if you are worried about that. If it kept up its initial blast, it would only be interesting. But it quiets (sort of like Timbuktu in that its woods start out pronounced and then melt to cream. If you like Timbuktu, you might like Yatagan) into a warm, herbal, woodsiness with hints of leather. I have a huge bottle, so let me know if you’d like to try it!

Little cloth cat smells amazing. Actually. I got it on Nantucket. I had one exactly like it when I was a girl, also from Nantucket. But it was lost amidst my parents’ divorce and my many moves years ago. I was so happy to find the very same cat with the same scent. It smells like sweet fir trees. I adore it!

I tried Yatagan last week at Jovoy in Paris, I loved it a lot but bought Revillon Detchema instead. I was told it’s the closest to the original reformulation off all old relaunched perfumes.
That being said, I’m wearing Sonia Rykiel 7e Sens today in remembrance of this incredible parisian designer who died yesterday at 86

SOTD was the last of my 5 Fragonards, “Désert”. This is supposed to have a citrus opening, then move on through saffron into tobacco, tonka and oud. Alas, it smells every bit as nondescript
as the others, and by now it has ‘deserted’ – Boom Boom! ;^)

I’m in CDG airport, waiting for my flight home to BHX. After rocking up to the Guerlain display, I have “Ambre Eternel” on one wrist and “Santal Royal” on the other. I like both, but don’t need 125ml of either and right now they don’t come in smaller bottles. I was thinking of getting a little bottle of L’Heure Bleue but it’s actually cheaper in BHX duty free (£45 vs. €65 here) so I’ll leave it to Sunday.

SOTE is “Escapade à Byzance” from Olibère, which I bought at the alternative perfumes exhibition back in June.

      Top: cinnamon, black pepper, saffron, thyme, ginger and citruses;
      Mid: cloves, cypress and incense;
Base: benzoin, heliotrope, musk, vanilla, patchouli, amber, cedar and vetiver.

Fragrantica reviews are sniffy about it but I like it a lot, and it’s a great antidote to a week of dull-as-dishwater Fragonards. I wonder when is the next Freebiemeet so I can ship them onwards to a more appreciative home? :^)

Now that it’s dried down, I’m getting a woody note that doesn’t work for me. It’s of the saw-dusty, dry variety that I find in Tocade and Ylang 49-some sort of synthetic sandalwood?- that make an otherwise likeable perfume less appealing to me. I’ll still give it another go when it’s cooler out.

I’m very particular about woods-particularly of the synthetic variety. I’d prefer a natural sweaty cedar to many of the raspy, screechy synthetics. I haven’t tried the one you mentioned. The one I’ve liked so far is L’Etre Aime Femme.
Oh! And I’m sitting in that corner of my couch where I keep getting mysterious wafts of Taklamakan. I still can’t pinpoint where it’s coming from, but it smells so good. Those are some smooth woods.

This is a surprisingly calvin Klein free household, so I went for Jil Sander Stylessence instead, trying to break free from the spell of Monsieur Li. While running errands I passed the best perfume store in town and discovered that the full range of Arquiste has made its way to Sweden. Tried L’Etrog and was immediately smitten. What a lovely mix of citrus, herbs and sweetness! Happy Friday to you all!

No CK ’round these parts, so I’m giving Vert Incense a whirl. It was both vert and incense at first, and now a short while later all I’m smelling is… salty wood? Salty wood with fennel rubbed on it? Hmm, maybe it’s growing on me…

SOTD = Mugler Les Exceptions Oriental Express

I split 2 bottles of this last year and have about 40 mLs left over. This is lightly sweet powdery musky vanillic, reminiscent of a non-boozy, lighter version of Cuir Beluga. Creosote would love the Guerlainade in this one.

I still have to go through my sample set. I’ve tried one other – Chyprissime – and recall it being quite good. The distribution is extremely limited in the US; I think only 2 Nordstrom have it, one of which is in Chicago. The bottles are refillable and, therefore, easy to split.

Thanks again for the Oriental Express split, hajusuuri! It’s a modern classic, and so lovely to wear. I have a sample of Chyprissime and should give it a good test.

I wish Cuir Impertinente had measured up to Oriental Express (which would admittedly be difficult). The top notes seemed promising, but it seemed a tad dull to me after that.

I’m in Mona di Orio Rose Etoile de Hollande, which resembles Nahema, but I think I love Mona’s version more, and as I came across a good deal for the discontinued travel sizes, it is much more affordable. It behaves well in the current heat, which like Austenfan, I not coping so well with.

I’m continuing on in my quest to find a fig scent I enjoy, so I’m wearing Premier Figuere again. The first blast was a problem, but after a few hours of wearing, it has turned fairly enjoyable. Philosykos and En Mediterranee are better, but I might be able to wear this when I’m in the mood for fig. It doesn’t seem to be either musty or sour, which I’ve found with fig scents in the past. Oh, and the only CK scent I had was Eternity, which I bought because of the review in the Guide. Yuck!

CK Reveal, which was truly a blind buy as part of the Chandler Burr Untitled Series. Tried it, didn’t like it. Recently tried again and am enjoying it much more. I like the saltiness and beachy thing that’s going on, which I didn’t notice at first sniff. Might have been the time of year that I first tried it that made me not like it.

Literally the only CK I have. I’m not sure I’ve ever sniffed any of his scents. No reason, just haven’t tried them.

I don’t own any CK scents and up until last night I thought I had never smelled any, but I was thinking about it and concluded that I must have smelled Obsession at some point. I seem to recall that there were two camps in the ’80’s: the Opium people and the Obsession people, and nobody I knew wore both. I was an Opium person but I’m sure I sniffed Obsession in a department store somewhere.

Today I’m wearing Bombay Bling just because it’s so fun.

Opium was late seventies and of course a whole lot of people were still wearing it through the end of the eighties, but after Giorgio Beverly Hills started the whole owning-a-room trend (and also started the boom in tear-open magazine samples) in 1981, the real battle in the mid eighties was the Obsession people versus the Poison people. If one of each of them got in the same elevator car together I’m fairly sure it would have just combusted.

I used to wear Obsession and loved it at the time but the new version seems to lack body…not so much an obsession as a dabble. Robin, have you ever done a Mainstream and Mall friday project? There seems to be a full range of Calvin Klein in my local department store so this project has been really great for sniffing…as all the perfumes are available
Spent a wonderful hour yesterday in the university print studio. Every year a printer in residence sets up for a special typesetting collaboration and this year the printer comes from Dartmouth college and has created a limited edition book of poems written by my friend, based on the first woman to climb NZ’s highest mountain Aoraki/Mount Cook. Lovely smell in the studio of printing ink, a warm oiliness. We all stood around talking about fonts and typefaces….fantastic!

Hello, best of good days to you all. I have to spend this Saturday at work in the madness that is Open Day. I refused when I first heard about it, but my dear man–very dear, but quite, quite, batty–took no critical thought about participating and agreed to be there for his school, Engineering. I continued to refuse until the powers that be “remembered” (I might have helped jiggle their memories….) that the employment contract contains a clause giving a day in lieu for people who work on the weekend. Hmmmph. Still not a compensation for my Saturday, but it’s something. I am wearing Misia hoping to sweeten my slightly sour mood. It’s a girly scent, like a pretty, very sweet, late teen, giggly and slightly knowing, but with an engaging honesty and innocence. I’m not sure it suits my personality at all, but it quite suits my nose.

BTW, yesterday I tried Frapin 1270 and Maharanih side-by-side. I don’t know why, but I had somehow got it into my head that they are similar. They aren’t, not remotely, and I am happy to report (because I bought a bottle) that Maharanih easily won all the perfumista tests I submitted them to. Maharanih is gently sensual: I recommend it to all northern hemisphere NS-tites as you head into cooler weather.

I always regret not buying PdNs Maharanih, New York, and Sacre Bleu before they were substituted with the “intense” versions. I did not see that coming until too late.

Misia 🙂 I often choose to wear perfumes in public that are more agreeable than I am. It is the least taxing form of camouflage.

TBH, I think I’ve only tried the Intense version of Sacre Bleu. It’s not louder, but the note peaks are more distinct, less blended. I liked the warm hummm of the original, but I can’t say which is the better perfume.

Hmmmm. The converse is that I throw on a bit of Salome or MKK because I want to channel the side of me that isn’t so “Misia” 😉 .

Misia is one sophisticated giggly girl to me! I wear it, like the other Chanels I own, when I want to feel like a full on grown up.

The only CK I have is Euphoria, and I do enjoy wearing it, but not today. It is so hot and humid here today, and my allergies are going nuts.

I sprayed a small amount of Nocturnes de Caron on this morning.

Wow! That is the first mention of Noctures de Caron that I have seen o NST! You smell amazing! Are you wearing current formulation or vintage? Nocturnes is probably the closest that ever came to being a “signature” scent for me…started wearing it in 1983 and have always had at least one bottle in my possession (only vintage)…….

I have a vintage bottle of Nocturnes that I cherish. I think Angela reviewed it… Yes, she did, but that was nearly 10 years ago:

Thanks for the link! Just read the review! I have the art deco spray bottle myself…I also have a ridiculously large limited edition glass bottle with a glass stopper (it is so large it almost looks like a small wine decanter) Don’t know what it held…maybe 8-10 oz? Right now there is only about 3/4 of an ounce left 🙁 Wish I had bought it in perfume formulation years ago….

No CK at all, so wearing my sample of Bruno Fazzolari’s Montserrat. Really nice green fig and grapefruit scent, with a wet plaster dry down. I’m trying to decide between Montserrat, Lampblack, and Au Dela as my Fazzolari full bottle purchase, but it’s a hard decision because they are all so very different. Au Dela is just gorgeous, and Lampblack is unusual and edgy, but I think Montserrat would probably be worn most, as it is the most work appropriate. The scent he based on that room from the Shining (forgot the room number) was horrifying. Smelled like a truck stop bathroom that had been aggressively and cheaply cleaned to cover up a scene of violence.

I like those 3 as well. Au Dela seems like it would span more seasons and Monserrat more situations. I’d considered Monserrat earlier this summer, myself. Maybe next year…
And, of course, you smell great!

I hated the Shining one too. A lot. I wish I liked Au dela and Montserrat, but they didn’t work for me. Jimmy is my pick, although I still haven’t gotten a FB.

Lampblack and Au Dela Narcisse des Montaignes are my picks from Bruno.

I just got ‘vinyl shower curtain’ from the Shining one. Not scary, but why would I want to walk around smelling like a shower curtain?

I tried Au Dela at Fumerie Parfumeriw during my sniffathon with ede97005 and AnnS. It was fine for the first 20 minutes but then devolved into plastic. I will give it another try. I think I have a decant too from a certain someone.

I never wore Calvin KleinEscape in the 1990s, but I have deep memories of how breathtakingly new and exotic those aquatic notes smelled then.

A few years ago, I bought a vintage bottle of Escape as a portal to those days when energy ran high and everything seemed possible. It’s a curious presentation: an EdP with a glass stopper under a covering metal cap: a sleek modern version of the cut glass bottles from a Victorian gentleman’s travel case. I only have to lift the covering cap; the scent arises and I see the shimmering images on the other side of the time portal. Maybe I’ll step through it tomorrow.

I’m joining Robin and everyone else wearing Obsession today–you all smell great! (I really like it at reasonable levels of application. ????)
Question for NSTers: Is Obsession predominantly ‘spicy’ to everyone, or does anyone else get the powdery/dryness that I do??

    Have an excellent Friday, peeps!

I find it more sweet and powdery than spicy. Dry, too. Like accidentally inhaling powdered spice-cake mix (which is never really quite like spices to me, how do they do that?)

I know it’s changed now, but even in the current formulation the spices and vanilla seem to predominate for most people. But it really isn’t sweet on me at all. Apparently my skin turns amber into grown-up baby powder! (Ha, that’s a bit of an oxymoron.)

The only CK I own is Euphoria, which I adore! However I had zero motivation to dig it out of its current home in the closet. It has a sillage to rival most 80s powerhouses. (Which is probably why I love it so much. ????)
My scent of the day is Ambre Nue layered over Cedre Blanc- very refreshing!

No CK here. I am such a child of the 80s that everything CK just makes me think of Brook Shields as a child and my intense dislike, at the time, for perfume. Thank goodness Brook Shields is a seemingly smart and funny and together woman and I now love perfume. Everything turned out ok!

I’ve been wearing the same stable of summer perfumes the past weeks and so not posting much: today Costarela. Also often at hand Fleurs de Sel, Aqua di Sale, Sel Marin, Atlantic Rose, Corsica Furiosa . . . see theme here? At night my new love, Arso, or testing other Profumum Roma perfumes and now wanting far too many of them: Olibanum, Ambra Aurea, Tagete for starters.

    Happy weekend to all!

I also have no CK, and in any case am not at home, and further never met a CK I was overfond of. Instead, I stepped into a little perfumerie on a side street and discovered the incredible Nasomatto line. I am sure I’ve read about it; I’m sure I’ve seen the name Hindu Grass in someone’s comments. I tried Black Afgano and absolutely ADORE it! It’s fabulous and has marvelous lasting power (as well it should, being a parfum). I loved it so much I came close to buying it; it took some self-cajoling to remind myself of my no-buy.

Anyway, my conference is over! Finally back to Toulouse tomorrow after a month of being away 🙂 I imagine my plants are all dead.

Hindu Grass is my favorite from that line (I may have mentioned it more than once). But it’s so fleeting and pricey that it will not be mine.
Good luck with the plant resuscitation!

I like Bordeaux well enough, but I’ve never been in love with it. This was my third trip (when you live just a couple hours away, you kind of have to visit, don’t you?), and I am pretty sure I’ve done absolutely everything I’ll ever need to do there, some things twice.

I walked past the Divine shop but didn’t go in 🙂 There’s one in Toulouse, so there’s certainly no rush, and I was really worried I’d be tempted to buy something (“something,” I say, as though I don’t already know that I want to get l’Homme Sage and l’Etre Aimé).

It’s my birthday and I don’t recall any CK but I know I have been bought a perfume pressie. Wore Vanille D’iris from an OJ sample today. It smelt really lovely in the sun which I didn’t expect to be obvious for it. Am deciding if I’ll buy a perfume present for myself, although I do already have some really truly lovely and loved perfumes. Happy Friday to you all.

Like many of you, nothing about the Calvin Klein brand has ever interested me, although I did like the way Euphoria smelled on a former coworker. So I rummaged in my sample bin and found CK One Shock for her, which I’d never heard of. Looked it up on NST and found its notes harmonized with the fragrance that has been my SOTD – philosophy falling in love summer, a light and breezy blackberry-tinged not-too-sweet floral that my grandkids love – and that was my choice for tonight.

They are here today and we’re getting ready for a small party to celebrate the kittens’ first birthday that was last week, the grandtwins’ that is next week, and the birthday of one of the two women who rescued our kittens’ pregnant mom and gave her and her subsequent 5 kittens a home. So there’d be no celebration if it weren’t for her! Not only did we get 2 kittens but a lasting friendship was formed with their ‘grandma’ and ‘auntie’.

Took the grandtwins to see Pete’s Dragon today, it truly is a magical film. The dragon is as real as any cat or dog, I could almost feel his green fur.

    It’s been a lovely day!

So late today. I feel like a broken record saying that I do not have any CK scents. Back in the day, I went through a few bottles of CK 1 and also had a bottle CK b which I never finished. I also remember Obsession because my mother wore it occasionally. I thought it was pretty on other people but I never wore it.

I wore Chanel No 22 today courtesy of She-ra. Such a pretty scent. I’m sure they are not really alike but it totally reminds me EL White Linen, which I also wore back in the day. I went through a few bottles of White Linen back then too.
