Friday scent of the day 8/5

Posted by Robin on 5 August 2016 207 Comments

Myrtle Beach vintage postcard

Friday, yay! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance from perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I meant to wear Maison Francis Kurkdjian Pluriel, and I swear I packed it, but I have not been able to find it as of yet. Instead I'm wearing Hermès Jardin Sur Le Nil body lotion mixed with some Aura Cacia Frankincense oil, and hopefully I'll be able to switch to the Pluriel tonight. (Meantime, thank you to everyone who wished me a happy vacation yesterday, and sorry I never managed to chime in on the scent of the day at all. We did not have WiFi access.)

Reminder: on 8/12 we're doing Fabulous but fleeting — wear a perfume you love even though it doesn't last as long as it should. Suggested by Mariann.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

In honor of my Mother and johanob’s Mother I am wearing 1960’s Shalimar EDC.
This formulation is the most leather/animalic/civet on my skin.
It is a beautiful day and I shall enjoy it.
I hope everyone else will be fortunate enough to do the same.
    🙂

I am drinking some truly horrid tea from a nearby restaurant.

If you like vintage postcards, do highly recommend the Boston Public Library’s flickr collection, which is actually incredible for all sorts of vintage things.

I came across this article by the late Christopher Hitchens this week and thought the tea lovers of NST (which is at least half of us) might enjoy:

Ha…I am a tea snob but he is surely worse! And it would appall him to learn that I do like to put a splash of half & half in my tea. At least I don’t put it in first…

Crikey, poor old Christopher does thunder on a bit, doesn’t he? Sadly, I find myself agreeing with him about quite a lot, but I wish I didn’t because he really does pontificate! Chez Waterdragon we make tea pretty much as he lays the law down, with leaves not bags, in a pre-warmed pot, and drink it very hot with a tiny dash of non-fat milk. We don’t have the fancy teas you guys do, just a good blend of an everyday single-estate Ceylon sold by Mr Dilmah. I sometimes have Lapsang Souchong or Earl Grey, but the dear one views such things with deep, deep suspicion, so they’re a solitary pleasure. I love my cups of tea, so refreshing, but I’d never inflict the Waterdragon style on any other household.

For desperation tea I recommend St. Dalfour Organic Classic Breakfast. It is just in regular paper/cotton teabags, but in airtight outer individual bags. I always have a couple of sachets in my bag–it is better than the Teavana bags they hawk at Starbucks imo.

Thank you, I will have to see if I can find those here. I brought all my tea with me, and that’s what I’ll drink when we get into our rental house on Saturday. Unfortunately none of it is in tea bags so meantime I am at the mercy of restaurants. Our (obviously not luxury) hotel has hot water and lipton tea bags. I can’t remember the brand of English Breakfast I was given at a restaurant this morning, but it was not delicious.

So…as usual…SOTD is Assam of India….testing on my right wrist a blend I made for a girlfriend I am meeting later for lunch….essential oils of vanilla. coconut pulp, lavender. frankincense, bitter almond and Egyptian musk…..giving it a test run before I gift it to her 🙂

Sampling Ferre Rose (by Alexandra Jouet and Francis Kurkdjian) today. So far I am very unimpressed. First, a burst of a very synthetic sweetness, then it was joined by equally synthetic freshness. I guess it’s not for me.

Well, it has a lot of positive reviews on Fragrantica, so maybe you will like it. My nose (or maybe skin) does not like fruity notes much, so maybe I am just unable to appreciate this scent. Now, more than two hours after application, I smell a sweet rose fragrance from my wrist. There is still something I do not like in it, but it is at least tolerable at this stage. And, thankfully, it is not a heavy fragrance.
So I would not recommend it, but to be fair it is not my type.

I don’t have a single Kurkdjian scent: I have a sample of Gaultier Le Mâle somewhere but I just can’t find it. I stumbled on a sample of Lutens’ Sa Majesté La Rose while hunting, so I’m wearing that, and it is a huge, amazing rose scent.

I put on MFK Oud Satin Mood in the morning – this is the only MFK I’ve worn several times and clearly remembered liking (I somehow keep confusing them and not remembering the ones I’ve tried). But it smelled sweeter today than usual, so thought I’d give Baccarat Rouge a try. Well, I should have checked first, as this one is even sweeter.

Both are good scents, however, and I smell nice, even if not exactly how I intended.

    (Have a lovely vacation, Robin!)

This was the only FK I had, and then just a sample. Having moved away from orientals over the last 5-10 years, I suspect there is an epigenetic marker for the preference of lighter flavors and scents that appears when we move to a warmer climate, i.e. the American south. 🙂 As good a theory as any (unless there’s one based on age).

Friday! Not a moment too soon.

I’m wearing MDCI Enlevement au Serail. I’ve progressed through the spectrum with this perfume; from the first burst of desire when I read all the five-star reviews, then bought a sample, then was mildly nonplussed (“what’s all the fuss about, this is quite ordinary”), then growing appreciation, and now I’m just in love. I no longer remember what I didn’t like about it at first.

    Have a good vacation Robin!

Wearing Lady Vengeance today, which as I received as a lovely and generous gift. I’m not sure its for me, as nice as it is. As much as I love the name, the scent doesn’t seem to suit it on my skin – it’s soft, powdery, and not at all vengeful. Does anyone else have that experience with this one?

Also, an update on the roommate situation (because at the very least I seem to be providing entertainment on this score 🙂 ) – I sent him the nicest possible email in these circumstances, and he of course responded poorly, acting the victim, and saying he might not be able to be out until MID-NOVEMBER, and suggesting he’d had no opportunity to speak with me about this before now, which is obviously false because we live together. I wrote back once again, calling him out on every point, pointing out that he’d given me an earlier deadline of end of summer, and just generally not having it. We’ll see where this goes but yeah – I’m done with this. Get out of my house!

I’m not kicking him out – here is the backstory: I have been living with this friend for many years, but he has a problem with anger issues and has been generally less than ideal to live with in recent times, especially since getting dumped in January. He was taking it out on me directly, and in April I said I couldn’t do it anymore and that we could no longer live together. I then started looking for a place but he said he would be the one to move out, and so I decided to wait it out until he left. He told me he would be gone by the end of the summer, but as I’ve tried to nudge him along, it now seems that mid-November is when he expects to leave. In the meantime, I spend as much time out of the house as possible and when I am home, I spend a fair amount of time in my room, because I never know when another temper tantrum is coming. I’ve been very patient, but I’m just exhausted now. I am desperate for space and to be able to be comfortable in my own home.

Please make sure you are safe. If any part of your intuition is telling you that you might not be, don’t talk yourself out of it. I’m not trying to scare you, but often we tell ourselves we’re just being silly, when we should listen to our “little voices”.

No no – it’s nothing like that. I have been friends with this kid for 15 years, and I’m also physically larger than him. This is not about physical anger – this is about what amount to temper tantrums with no physical aspects to it. He’s just emotionally immature, and I’m not playing Mommy anymore.

            5 August 2016 at 11:46 am

When I said “taking it out on me,” I meant with rudeness and moodiness and such. Thanks so much for being concerned about my safety, but please rest assured – I’m fine! Just venting.

          • Natalya says:
            5 August 2016 at 11:51 am

I of course don’t know your particular situation, but believe me, “essentially good” people who are immature will do the most psychological damage on you, exactly because they are essentially good, so you don’t want to just break with them completely and do something drastic, but they will take up your whole time and energy to have your own girlfriends/boyfriends because they are immature. I would just move out and regain my space and distance, so you two could interact like two independent people.

          • ScentSpirit says:
            5 August 2016 at 11:58 am

There is nothing wrong with venting, and I’m sure you can take care of yourself. Hope it gets resolved soon so you can reclaim your space.

Are you co- signers on the lease? Is the rent that good that he may be trying to get you to leave? Would consulting an attorney help? ( someone must know someone for advice before you actually need a real appointment 😉 )

I don’t think we need to take it to that level – he is a good kid at heart. He knows and has even previously acknowledged that he messed up, and that he needs to grow up and change his behavior. But I don’t think we have to live together for him to do it, and I really believe that this move will help him in the long run.

He and his mother have begun making bids on different places, and it is moving forward, but I really am hoping we don’t have to be living together until November.

He and his mother (who wants him to move out too) have been making bids on various places, so it is moving forward, so the issue is just a question of how quickly. If I move out now, then we both lose a great, fantastically cheap apartment, which in New York is no small thing!

          • Natalya says:
            5 August 2016 at 11:54 am

Well, it depends on how much your sanity is affected, of course. But if you move out, he will stay, so he’s not gonna lose it. I was in a situation somewhat like that, the person never moved out despite all the promises.

There are very very few people in the world as patient and forgiving as you. Just think of how things would be if there were more of “you” strategically placed in critical mass in various regions 😉

Good for you, and I think it is great you can share your household drama with NST. I have great respect for your patience and kindness.

Long ago, when I was a senior in high school, three young people I knew came home to find their parents had changed the locks and parked their belongings on the front lawn right after they turned 18 years old. This was a result of the young person’s well-known and flagrantly inappropriate behavior. It was a bit shocking and sad, but their parents simply could not live with them any longer and stay sane. Sometimes things don’t improve and enough is enough.

I hope you find some moments of peace and some lovely treats for yourself in the coming days and weeks. You deserve them.

Thanks Tiffanie! I’m so sorry to hear about that situation with your three friends, especially because it sounds like they were being punished for one (very young) person’s bad behavior. Or perhaps I misread, but either way, living with other people can be a challenge sometimes.

Perhaps I’ve overshared here, but I do often gain a great deal of insight from my fellow NSTers, and the support is always amazing. My roommate is not a bad person, but does need to grow up. Hopefully this will help make it happen. And then, as for me – freedooooom!!

I actually found six FK scents in my collection, three samples, two minis, and one full bottle. I chose to go with my favorite rose, Demeter Pruning Shears. There is just something about it. At first you think that it is a soliflore, but it really does have that metallic thing going for it.

I have one FK, a decant of Dior’s lovely Eau Noire, but it’s at home in England. So today I went with Maria Candida Gentile’s “Kitrea”, which is a fresh sour lemon washed in sea water. If it would only last better (and bear in mind, it probably will on most people) it would be a serious contender as a Summer seaside scent. Plus side: when it has vanished, I’ll replace with a different perfume for the evening. :^)

I’m wearing L’Ombre dans L’Eau as I have no Kurkdjian in my collection. I do have a funny story about one of his scents, though. A fumehead friend and I went on a sniffing jaunt last weekend, and he said, “Hey, try this Amyris Homme. It’s a dry, woody scent on me.” So I did, and about 20 minutes later my skin said, “OH HEY, THERE’S VANILLA IN THIS!” My friend couldn’t believe how different it smelled on me. (This may explain why Indult Tihota was a Massive Vanilla Cupcake Bomb on me. My skin apparently turns up certain vanillas to 11.)

I’ve two Kurkdjians: Carven Le Prfum Absolu which was a scrubber and APOM pour Femme which, also, was a scrubber in a big way (and a tenacious scrubber at that. It stayed on my jacket for aweek).

So I wore JM Pomegranate Noir with JM Grapefruit Cologne.

But, to go with the theme today I sprayed on s’more APOM pour Femme. It smells – rather loudly – like Veet depilating cream on me.

I had my first postdoc interview today!!!! I was super-duper discouraged right up until the interview, but the professor seemed really great and excited about me as a candidate. He…doesn’t currently have any money, but he wants to look for funding with me, which is the next best thing. But it really feels like an enormous weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I’ve got a LOT of work to do (we’re going to look at some collaborators and I need to put together a presentation for them, and then of course start writing grant proposals), but this is a wonderful first step 🙂

My mother has no FK scents, so I put on the first thing I came across: EL Pleasures! It’s a bit too clean for my mood–not nearly relieved or cheerful enough–but it’s still nice 🙂

Elie Saab L’Eau Couture. Sweeter than I generally like, but I do love almond. And it is so pleasant.

Sheet changing day. I have not found something that will make my sheets smell nice… We use unscented laundry detergent, and I find myself wanting something with scent. I sprayed a bunch of Eau du Cloitre cologne on the sheets/pillows.

Anyone have recommendations? I’m tempted by the Mrs Meyer’s scent powders…thinking of peony. Or the laundry detergent. Mainly because I bought the geranium hand soap and room spray and quite love it. So, I figure one of their scents for laundry might work well… Even if just for linens…

I keep unwrapped bars of soap in my linen cupboard. After I wash and dry a set of sheets they go into the cupboard to soak up the scent for a few weeks.

This was a tradition in my childhood home. My mother said unwrapped bars of soap will harden over time then last longer in the bath. And scented sheets are a bonus. 😀

I’m going to try the soaps, and possibly a scented dryer sheet in the linen closet for now. When it is time to buy new detergent, I may look around at scented…

Although….the Eau de Cloitre has worked nicely… It is a very pretty rose and is cheap.

Was planning to wear the ravishing Parfums MDCI Enlevement au Serail, but in searching for that decant, I came across the vintage Chantilly that I couldn’t find yesterday, so I’m wearing Chantilly.

I guess it does suggest the idea of the Chantilly dessert up top if you find real sandalwood creamy and notice a hint of maraschino cherry. But it’s a heavy perfume by today’s standards, with the soapy-powdery aldehydes in addition to that real sandalwood, and not sweet or fruity. The 2160 (?) Tuesdays perfume that Jessica reviewed sounds like a very loose interpretation, which reminds me of one of those Prairie Home Companion skits in which the band morphs any tune – be it rock, jazz or Bach – into “She’ll Be Coming Round the Mountain.” 😉

Ha! I love it when the band lapses into She’ll Be Coming Round the Mountain. I teach that song to 1st graders every year. 😀

I have great memories of old Chantilly. I had a bottle gifted to me when I was quite young and the scent permeated the dresser drawer it was hidden in. When I started wearing it as a teen, it made a statement (!), and I loved it. I’m thinking the next round of samples I buy needs to include a few from 2160Tuesdays. The reviews on NST are wonderfully enabling.

I’m really enjoying the Chantilly today! I don’t think I appreciated it when I was young, so props to you. Luca Turin liked 2160Tuesdays, too, so I do have some samples to try.

I chose A la Rose as my FK scent of the day. It’s not groundbreaking but I am enjoying it.

Iris Nobile EdP for me this evening after Philosykos edit wore off.
Is the EDP by FM?.. not sure, but I smell gorgeous, and determined to wear this beauty more often.

I’m taking today off work to get ready for a weekend trip, so I almost forgot it was Friday and Francis Kirkdjian day! I only have one of his, Eau Noire, but I’m happy to have an excuse to wear it as it’s been a while. It went on with a big woof of lavender that I didn’t recall having been there, but now that’s settled (thank goodness) and it’s all anise-inflected deliciousness. My husband remarked that it smelled like pancakes. “Pancakes?” I asked. “Pancakes… in a church,” he clarified. And now, nose to wrist, that’s *totally* what I smell!

Morning, all. I own nothing by FK, not even the memory of a sample. I’m wearing Cristalle because, though I’m better, I can’t fancy too much of anything. But…sigh…there’s housework…work work…family work…seems I’d better stop being invertebrate, insert my backbone where it belongs and start dealing with life again.

Although I admire this perfumer in the abstract, I don’t a single bottle by him, and most things I’ve tried by him really don’t agree with me (I think he tends to use certain synthetics that don’t work for me, that super sharp, stinging patchouli–fractionated?–for example). So I wasn’t even included to go through my bag of samples from his line. But after checking the list on the blog, I did notice that I do have a decant of a perfume by him that I do like: Enlevement au Serail, so I went with that. Haha, naturally I’d pick the one that’s discontinued to be a fan of! Anyway, I have to admit that this is a deliciously peachy jasmine, and I will be sorry when my decant is gone.

BTW, LT noted that HdP 1969 is somewhat similar, and I agree. Also less expensive.

To me, 1969 is more of a peach & patchouli fragrance (and I certainly associate patchouli with the year 1969, so the name really fits the fragrance!). I mostly get a ton of jasmine from Enlevement au Serail, and that’s what I love about it. So unfortunately I can’t sub 1969 for the not only more expensive but also discontinued to Enlevement au Serail.

You’re right, there’s plenty of patchouli. I like it anyway, but I admit I tend not to wear it out anywhere.

No skool yesterday because of the snow and more snow on the ground today…but just a little bit. I love how the hills are reduced to black and white…just so bleak but beautiful. Just put on a dab of Black Flower Mexican Vanilla as I read in bed, and watch the sparrows in the trees. They have started nest building.

Nest building! That seems a bit previous, given the weather! I hope they don’t impetuously try to bring up babies in sub-zero temperatures. What would they eat? Any sensible worm will have burrowed deep…oh, seed eaters, right? Well, it’s still not working! Kanuka, really, I think you should step outside and Have A Word.

Not sure if you see this, but this Moonstone is by an Icelandic writer called Sjon – Kanuka mentioned this a while back. I read Collins’s when I was very young and don’t remember much…

We’re at the end of another string of very hot/very humid days, so I was delighted – and surprised – to learn from Robin’s list that one of my favorite light, refreshing scents for this time of year is YR Collection d’Ete, and that is my SOTD.

The description on the box says it’s meant to convey ‘ all the charm of a summer spent by the Mediterranean Sea,’ with notes of bergamot, lemon, mandarin, citrus flowers, and a woody base. And it is, very citrussy/woodsy, nicely unisex, a little bit herbally and not ‘aquatic’ at all. Perfect for today!

Robin, have a wonderful vacation! Love the postcard today; although it’s Myrtle Beach, it ‘looks like’ my fragrance.

Bear and johnabob, hugs and good thoughts being sent your way.

Hello everyone. Can anybody please tell me how Guerlain Terracotta compares to Lys Soleia? I have a full bottle of Lys and never tried Terracota and would like to get a big decant, but I wonder if they are very similar. Thanks for your advise.

Only have one FK, Rose Barbare which I love but wasn’t in the mood for today. So hubby subbed in for me by wearing Oud Satin Mood. I still can’t believe he chose it after smelling the entire line. He smells great, but very sweet….. ????

Wearing APOM Elixir, from the Splitmeet. (Thank you, galbanumgal, for hosting.) Very pretty sweet orange blossom, with great longevity. I may wear it again tomorrow. Now to read everyone else’s picks, and then get to bed.
